Funny Short "Spider-Man in Kansas" Animation

One of my friends shared this brief animated gif on Facebook called "Spider-Man in Kansas," and it made me laugh. I had to share it with the rest of you, so you can enjoy the hilarity of seeing what it would be like for Spider-Man if he wasn't fighting crime in a big city. I'm not sure who created it, but it was posted by Reddit user xsited1.

THE JAUNT: Stephen King's Time Travel Story To Be Helmed By MAMA Director

$

I never saw Andy Muschietti's horror film Mama, but I know Joey really liked it. I'm sure he'll be glad to hear, then, that Muschietti and his wife Barbara have just been attached to a Stephen King time travel story called The Jaunt. Deadline says that the movie adaptation is set up at Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment with Andy lined up to direct.

The story takes place in a world in which teleportation, or "jaunting," is a common practice, though people who use the method of travel must be under anesthesia. While jaunting is essentially instantaneous in the real world, if you're awake during the process, you experience nothing but motionless whiteness over hundreds or even millions of years, which - as you might expect - drives people totally insane when they finally emerge on the other side.

Sounds like a cool concept, though after reading the short story, I do wonder how they'll be able to expand the idea out into a full feature. It seems like the perfect length for a short, so they'll obviously have to add a lot to pad the story out and fit a two hour run time. Hopefully they'll be able to come up with some good sci-fi stuff to fill in the gaps.

20 Greatest Slow-Motion Scenes in Film

There's something about slow motion scenes that I really enjoy. It's a moment in the story to help build up a powerful moment, or show off the details of something really cool. There's an art in capturing the beautiful awesomeness of slow motion, and Invenire Films has released a video supercut showing off 20 of the greatest slow-motion scenes in film.

The 20 greatest, or most powerful, uses of slow-motion in film, based solely on my personal opinion. All music rights go to Donovan and Pye Records.

What are some of your favorite slow-motion scenes?

Is Kevin Smith Developing a MALLRATS Sequel?

$

Kevin Smith's Mallrats was an abysmal failure at the box office. The writer/director's follow-up to Clerks nearly put him off of making movies altogether, but as soon as it hit home video, the narrative about the movie started to change. Like so many cult comedies, it just needed some time to find its audience, and then it took off. In high school, my friends and I once watched Mallrats six times in seven days (with various commentaries, etc), and to this day it's still my favorite of Smith's movies.

And now it appears that Smith is hinting at making a sequel. This is what he said on Twitter:

A "rat," eh? Sounds like a Mallrats sequel to me. It's not like Smith hasn't set a precedent for returning to his previous work: he's already made one sequel to Clerks with another coming up, he has a shared universe thing going on with Tusk and Yoga Hosers, and one could argue that Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back was sort of a quasi-sequel to all of his View Askew productions at that point.

Would you like to see Jason Lee and the rest of the gang return? Lee is almost 45 now, so it might be a little sad to see him still cruising the mall, but maybe Brodie really did become the host of The Tonight Show like the end of the first film suggested.

Guy Battles Video Game Characters as Himself in STREET FIGHTER Style Game

This is really freakin' cool. YouTuber Amazing LP神奇的老皮 took over 100 hours using Adobe After Effects to make this video of himself inserted into the video game The King of Fighters. I'd never heard of that particular game before, but it's essentially a Street Fighter-esque fighting game like all of the others that were so popular back in the 90s. As you'll see in the video, this dude is very talented - his editing is on point, and his moves aren't too bad, either.

I've also included a video of him pretending to be in Street Fighter, so check that out below.

Dominic Cooper is Reportedly The Frontrunner for AMC's PREACHER Series

$

I'm wildly curious about Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's upcoming adaptation of the comic book Preacher, because the property has been bouncing around for years and has come close to being made into a movie multiple times in the past decade. It's also my favorite thing I've ever read in any medium, so it'd be fair to say that I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they translate the material for the small screen on AMC.

A big part of that is going to be casting, and The Tracking Board claims that Dominic Cooper (who you probably know as Howard Stark from Captain America and Agent Carter) is the current frontrunner to play Reverend Jesse Custer. Here's the network's description of the show:

’Preacher’ follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, and has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned his responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making him answer for his dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers —a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.”

The tone of this show is going to be insanely difficult to get right, and though I really like everyone involved in the behind the scenes of this iteration, and I'd rather see Preacher done as a show instead of a movie, I'm still not sure that any adaptation at all is going to be able to really do the comic justice. Cooper seems like a solid enough actor, but he's definitely not the first (or even tenth) guy that comes to mind when I think of Jesse Custer, but I learned a long time ago to try to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to casting and wait to see if actors surprise us with their performances - more often than not, when we look back at a show or movie, it seems unthinkable that the leads could have been played by anyone else.

What do you think? Is Cooper the right guy for the job?

These videos are old, but I'm just now seeing them and I can't stop laughing. YouTuber Pastek has created a compilation of "fail" videos that inserts Mario and Luigi into them and shows how they were really the ones responsible for people's mistakes. The sound effects had me cracking up. This is so well executed, and I can't believe I haven't seen something like this before. What a great idea.

MORTAL KOMBAT X- Jason Voorhees Reveal Teaser

mortal-kombat-x-jason-voorhees-reveal-teaser

Look like Jason Voorhees is going to take a little vacation from killing teenagers at Crystal Lake and violently slash his way through the roster of Mortal Kombat X! The news was confirmed by Netherrealm and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and they've released a little teaser video to fuel the excitement.

Jason will be added to the Mortal Kombat X DLC called the 'Kombat Pack', which will also include two other classic Kombat characters, and another "special guest" character. I really hope that "special guest" character is Spawn as previously rumored

Who knows, though - maybe Freddy will show up again and we can have an epic Freddy vs. Jason battle. As some of you probably remember, Freddy Krueger was included in Mortal Kombat game released back in 2011. Check out the reveal teaser below:

Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion's CON MAN Has a Teaser Trailer!

Yesterday we reported that Firefly stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk were teaming up to give us a new comedy series called Con Man. They are currently collecting money to develop the series on Indiegogo and so far they have over $1.5 million! The fans sure did turn out to support these guys and it's awesome! The more money they bring in, the more episodes they can create for us.

As a way of saying thank you to the fans, they released a funny teaser trailer showing us the kind of humor that we can expect to see in the show. I love what I'm seeing so far, and I can't wait to see more! Enjoy the teaser! Ya gotta love the fanboys and fangirls in the world!

Here's the synopsis for the series:

Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk-Me!) was a co-star on Spectrum, a sci-fi series which was canceled -Too Soon- yet became a cult classic. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred in the series and has gone on to become a major movie star. While Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister, Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events.  The show will feature all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way to these events.
The series is a light-hearted take on the personalities, luminaries, and characters in the sci-fi community we are privileged to call ourselves members. Con Man is a way to share some of the surreal occurrences we have had, while telling the story of a guy learning to love and embrace his fans.
I wanted to make a show that featured all of my favorite convention artists and friends together. Not only that, I wanted to celebrate the world where heroes, villains, zombie hunters, and space pirates all overlap. I especially wanted to work with my friend Nathan Fillion again.

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver Get Their Own AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Character Posters

While the rest of the Avengers have already received their own character posters, we were still waiting on ones to drop for Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Vision. That wait is partially over: Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Quicksilver have gotten their own posters (via Yahoo), which leaves us with Vision and Ultron left before we get to call out "bingo." We'll probably get a few more lower level entries in the weeks leading up to the film's release (like one for Cobie Smulders, or something like that), but for those of you who are digitally collecting these posters, you can add two more major players to your collection.

We know that these two characters originally work for/with Ultron before eventually coming over to work alongside The Avengers, but the full extent of their impact to the story remains unknown. Will they emerge as a part of a newly formed Avengers team by the time the story ends, or will they have their own fish to fry? We'll find out when Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives on May 1st.

10 Fun Facts About Sam Raimi’s DARKMAN

$

Spider-Man wasn’t the first superhero movie Sam Raimi made. In 1990, he made an awesome movie called Darkman that starred Liam Neeson as a brilliant scientist who embarked on a mission of revenge after being burned alive and left for dead. I love this movie, and I think it was one of the first true dark and gritty superhero films that had been made, and it wasn't based on any existing comic book. I recently revisited the film after years of having not seen it, and I was once again blown away by how great it was. Darkman is one of those classic movies that I don't think gets enough love and attention. So, this weeks Fun Facts list features ten bits of trivia that you probably don’t know about Darkman.

  • According to Bill Paxton, he was almost cast as the lead character Peyton Westlake. He told his friend Liam Neeson about the audition, and Neeson ended up getting the role. Paxton was so pissed off that he didn’t speak to Neeson for months. Raimi liked Neeson's Gary Cooper charisma, and Neeson was drawn to "the operatic nature of the story and the inner turmoil of the character. To research the role, Neeson contacted the Phoenix Society, an organization that helps accident victims with severe disfigurements adjust to re-entering society."
  • Julia Roberts was going to be cast as Julie Hastings in the film, but she was offered the lead role in Pretty Woman so she had to be replaced, and the role went to Frances McDormand.
  • Raimi wanted originally wanted Bruce Campbell to play the lead role, but the producers didn’t think that Campbell could pull it off, so he had to audition other actors. Campbell did make a cameo appearance at the end of the film, though. He also voiced some of the screams of characters who fall to their deaths.
  • The director originally wanted to base this movie on the comic book The Shadow, but he couldn’t get the rights to the character so he created Darkman, which originated from a short story he wrote that paid homage to the Universal horror films of the 1930s.
  • There was some behind-the-scenes drama during the production of the film. Apparently the screenwriting process was grueling, there were lengthy post-production battles with the studio, the editor allegedly had a nervous breakdown and left the movie, and Raimi and McDormand clashed because of creative differences. She was apparently a very difficult actress to direct.
  • The script went through 12 drafts. The reason for this is because Raimi wanted to explore Darkman's arc over the course of the film. He said: "I decided to explore a man's soul. In the beginning, a sympathetic, sincere man. In the middle, a vengeful man committing heinous acts against his enemies. And in the end, a man full of self-hatred for what he's become, who must drift off into the night, into a world apart from everyone he knows and all the things he loves."
  • Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, who are close friends of Raimi, did some uncredited cleaning up on the finished script.
  • Neeson worked 18 hour days in ten-piece makeup. He liked the idea of "working behind a mask on camera, as well as exploring the possibilities this entailed. Neeson also had input on the costume he wore as Darkman, especially the cloak. The hardest part was speaking with false teeth, because he didn't want them to move at all."
  • Directors Ivan Raimi and John Landis made cameo appearances in the film as doctors in the burn ward.
  • The villain in the film, Durant, had a finger fetish in the movie. That idea came from Raimi who wanted the character to have a specific trademark that hinted at a military background. This would explain why Durant was proficient with a grenade launcher when he's firing it from a helicopter.

Below you'll find the original trailer and a featurette for the film:

Jamie Foxx Says Martin Scorsese is Directing Him in Mike Tyson Biopic

$

Last year, Django Unchained star Jamie Foxx was attached to play boxer Mike Tyson in a biopic written by Boardwalk Empire creator and The Wolf of Wall Street writer Terence Winter. That was back in August, and we haven't heard any concrete news about the project since then. Now, though, Foxx is saying that Martin Scorsese is going to be directing it, which is pretty big news.

Uproxx has the transcription from Foxx's recent appearance on Power 105's The Breakfast Club:

“I just went in with Paramount with Mike Tyson. So I’m going to do the Mike Tyson story. Listen, to be in the same room pitching Mike Tyson to Paramount, Mike Tyson is on one side, I’m on the other side and doing Mike Tyson at the same time. And Martin Scorsese at the helm. This will be the first boxing movie that Martin Scorsese has done since Raging Bull.”

Scorsese is obviously a master filmmaker, so I'm sure he'd bring something excellent to a biopic like this, but he's also a really busy guy, so I'm not sure when this project will actually start filming. But will they actually tackle the uglier side of Tyson's life, like that time he went to prison for rape, or when he bit off Holyfield's ear in the ring? People seem to forget about that stuff when they celebrate him being in movies like The Hangover. Foxx continued:

“[It's] the story of the guy who at 18 years old had $60 million in his pocket and everybody’s trying to get and now the grown guy who sits back and reflects on the whole thing, like, the money was the downfall.”

So it sounds like there's a bit of gravity to their version after all. I'm really hoping Scorsese doesn't shy away from the negative aspects of his life - when it comes to movies, there are few things worse than a biopic that feels like it's been nitpicked by its subject, because then there's no objective truth to it.

Are you looking forward to seeing Scorsese team up with Foxx for a Tyson biopic?

Patton Oswalt Talks About Marvel, DC, STAR WARS, Crossovers, and More

About a week ago, writer/comedian/actor Patton Oswalt sat down with the team at Screen Junkies and laid out his excellent pitch for two sequels to M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable. But that wasn't their full conversation. Now the second part of their talk has been released, and it's basically geek heaven: Patton discusses Spider-Man coming to the MCU; the brooding, dark gritty DC Comics cinematic universe; his ideal movie crossover; the best superhero movie of the century so far; and much, much more. It's a great conversation full of the types of topics we spend all day writing and talking about as fans, and it's cool to hear his take on all of this. Check it out below.

The Joker in SUICIDE SQUAD is Based on The Dark Knight Returns

One of most talked about things regarding David Ayer's Suicide Squad is how Jared Leto's Joker is going to be portrayed. We've previously heard that the character will be "Cerebral and Comedic" and a “Beautiful Disaster”. Now thanks to Latino-Review's El Mayimbe, we have some additional information on the character that I think you're going to like. According to him, this Joker is inspired by Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, and below you can find the details he offers up. I should warn you though, there are SPOILERS:

"So what I'm being told, Leto's Joker is most definitely based on THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS version. He's lean & scarred but his suit does have broad shoulders. Joker works out in his cell like an inmate when he is interrogated by Amanda Waller. He's doing hand stand push ups so it makes sense that Jared Leto said he is putting on weight. He's definitely not skinny, but in fact more muscular. He has bleached skin not make up.
"#SPOILER - He's killed one of Batman's sidekicks, there is a lot of references to his past crimes. He kills a lot of people.
"HUGE #RUMOR - I'm also told The Joker has a lot of scenes with HUGO STRANGE! He's the psychiatrist at the prison & seems to be a part of the story yet I heard nothing of casting or mention of a single casting choice. Hugo Strange has quite a few interactions with the Joker & Harley Quinn. It's not the regular security. It's internal one on one thing."

This really is going to be a different take on the villain than we've ever seen before, and I'm completely intrigued. I know this is all just a rumor for now, but it's hard not to get excited about seeing this character reimagined for the big screen again. The Joker is one of my all-time favorite villains, and I'm sure Leto is going to be insane in the role. What do you think of the information that was revealed here?

In case you missed it, yesterday we got some details on Deathstroke's role in the film. You can read about there here

GAME OF THRONES Showrunner Compares Bran's Absence to STAR WARS

$

If you've been following closely with Game of Thrones news in the show's off-season, you probably already know that Bran and Hodor won't be appearing in the upcoming fifth season. (Spoilers ahead for the end of season 4.) In an interview with EW - that outlet has been churning out GOT content left and right over the past couple of days! - co-showrunner David Benioff compares Bran's absence to Luke Skywalker's journey over the course of the original Star Wars trilogy:

“Like, it would be far less interesting, after The Empire Strikes Back to have an hour-long movie in between Empire and Return of the Jedi where Luke is training. It’s so much cooler to cut from end of Empire to begging [sic] of Return, where he’s become the Jedi.
"The fact is, even though we’re making changes to the books and adapting as necessary, we’re trying to keep the various storylines the same [as the books] and trying to keep them roughly [chronologically] parallel. And [in season 4] we caught up to the end of Bran’s storyline [in George R.R. Martin’s most recent book, A Dance with Dragons] last year. So if we pushed him forward this season, then he’s way ahead of where the other characters are.”

This totally makes sense to me, and though releasing actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright from his contract temporarily means there's the danger that the actor might not return to the role, Benioff is hopeful that he actually will come back for the show's sixth season. The only thing that might be a little weird about not seeing Bran for such a long period of time is that Hempstead-Wright is noticeably aging, while the character of Bran is not supposed to age that much over the course of the books because it takes place during a smaller span of time. Here's hoping they don't have to eventually recast him - I'm looking forward to seeing how his story plays out once he gets back in the mix after earning his sorcery powers from that weird tree dude.

COP CAR Video Review - Sundance 2015

Kevin Bacon's Cop Car was one of the highlights at Sundance this year. It was a film that we all enjoyed, but it wasn't without its problems. Here is our video review in which we discuss this traumatic thriller that involves two young boys who come across a police cruiser and take it for a joy ride. In his review, Byran said,

"Cop Car takes a seemingly simple concept and makes it enthralling. Without a whole lot of blood, gore, or jump scares, it manages to make you scared and tense and still get a laugh in every now and then. It builds the intensity well, too, starting with two kids just walking in a field talking about kid stuff, and ending with a deadly standoff between two of the film's antagonists with the kids in the middle."

In anticipation of the return of The Flash on The CW, the network has released a new poster featuring the hero's arch enemy, The Reverse Flash. This set of episodes promises something big, as the last promo spot says that it will "change the course of history." The next episode of the series is called “Out of Time” and it is described as follows:

“Mark Mardon aka The Weather Wizard (guest star Liam McIntyre) appears in Central City intent on avenging his brother Clyde’s death, and sets his sights on Joe, who shot Clyde. When Mardon attacks Joe and Barry, Barry is able to super-speed them to safety but Mardon gets away. Barry warns Joe not to go after a meta-human alone but Joe doesn’t listen and ends up in grave danger. Meanwhile, Cisco looks into the night the team captured the Reverse Flash and realizes something doesn’t add up and begins to wonder whether Joe was right about Dr. Wells. Barry and Linda (guest star Malese Jow) end up on an awkward double date with Eddie and Iris.”

“Out of Time” was directed by Thor Freudenthal and written by Todd and Aaron Helbing, and is set to air on Tuesday, March 17th.

First Look at Wonder Woman's New Battle-Ready Costume

Wonder Woman has gone through several different outfits over the years,. Now DC Comics has released a first look at her new costume, which will debut in Wonder Woman #41. As of right now, there is no information on what led up to the new outfit, but I love it! I think that this is a badass design for the character, and she actually looks like she could effectively run into battle and kick some ass.

The comic was written by Meredith Finch, with art and cover by David Finch and Jonathan Glapion. Here are the details on the upcoming comic:

A daring new direction begins with the arrival of a brand-new villain! But while he may be new to us, he’s not new to the world he seeks to tame. And speaking of villains, Donna Troy’s quest to destroy Wonder Woman ratchets up another gear (if that’s even possible!), while the games of the Gods bring dark portents to the ultimate Amazon!

I also included five other covers for upcoming DC Comics issues. I've included the details for each one. Thanks to HitFix for the covers!

Be sure to let us know what you think of Wonder Woman's new costume!
