I always prefer Disgaea trailers with Japanese voiceovers, as it just fits better with all the craziness that plays onscreen. The newest Disgaea stars three main characters, just like past entries, including Killia, Seraphina, and Usalia. The game promises even more characters from the bucket of unusual that Disgaea draws most of its influence from, and more of the tried and true strategy RPG goodness that fans have come to expect. The sprites look significantly better, and the animations all got a facelift. While this isn't necessarily a showcase for the technological aspects of the PS4, truth be told it doesn't have to be. The gameplay is addictive and deep with a dash of crazy, so while we wait for its fall 2015 release, enjoy the trailer, and let us know what other JRPG franchises you'd like to see migrate to the PS4, or Xbox One for that matter.

Netflix continues to promote the third season of House of Cards with a new trailer that aired last night during the Oscars. It gives us out best look yet at what is in store for us for Season 3, and it does a great job of getting me even more pumped up about where the story is going to take us.

Francis (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Robin Wright) Underwood continue their ruthless rise to power as threats mount on all fronts in Season 3, and it will premiere on Friday, February 27th at 12:01 a.m. on Netflix. Time to binge watch season 2 again before it starts!

RED DEAD REDEMPTION Fan Film - Seth's Gold

The gang over at Zapruder Pictures (nice name!) has put together a pretty cool Red Dead Redemption fan film called Seth's Gold. It's not a perfect short, but the locations the filmmakers were able to secure and the impressive way they were able to recreate elements from the game (including the slow-mo duel) more than makes up for it. This was clearly made with passion, and it's the best Red Dead Redemption fan piece I've seen, from the detailed costumes all the way up to the Gatling gun sequence. Fans of the game will definitely want to check this out.

Wicked Awesome Trailer for SNOW GIRL AND THE DARK CRYSTAL

"Demons suffer in hell. Gods rule in heaven. Men stride the earth."

I've got an incredible trailer for you to watch for the Chinese fantasy adventure film Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal. I don't really know what exactly is going on in this trailer, but it looks freakin' badass! It's just packed full of ridiculously cool eye-candy that a lot of you are sure to enjoy.

The story is described as a romantic fantasy adventure, and it follows the legendary hero Zhong Kui, "a fabled warrior with mysterious powers who is forced to conquer the realms of Heaven and Hell to save his people and the woman he loves."

The movie will get a limited 3D theatrical release on February 27th, 2015. I would love to see this movie on the big screen, so I hope it's playing somewhere around me. This is sure to be a crazy fun moviegoing experience.

Can You Guess Which Oscar Winner Provides The Voice of The Yellow M&M?

Check out this old M&M's commercial and see if you can guess which Oscar winner does the voice of Yellow:

I just received a press release that completely blew my mind. It revealed that the answer is Whiplash star J.K. Simmons! That's crazy to me. It's one of those things where now that I know it's him, his voice is more recognizable when I watch the commercials, but I had never even considered who provided those voices before. (Doug and Futurama voice actor Billy West is the Red M&M, by the way, and apparently Jon Lovitz and John Goodman were the original voices of the characters when they were first introduced.

In honor of Simmons' (well-deserved) Oscar win at last night's ceremony and to celebrate the fact that he's been the voice of the yellow "spokescandy" for almost 20 years, M&M's sent over a few pictures of Simmons recording material as well as a portrait of him made out of M&M's. Pretty cool, right?

Sean Penn Takes Aim in New Trailer for THE GUNMAN

$

Sean Penn made quite a splash on social media last night when he said, "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" before handing the Best Picture trophy to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. The two have apparently been friends for years (Inarritu directed Penn in 21 Grams back in 2003), but without that bit of context, his joke came off as insensitive and offensive to a lot of people.

I wonder if that comment will affect the reception of Penn's new film, The Gunman. Open Road has released a new trailer for the movie, and it reveals that the stakes are even more personal for Penn's character than we thought when his female companion is kidnapped. (Makes sense, considering that this movie was made by Pierre Morel, the same guy who directed Taken.) I'm still under the impression that the story seems like something we've seen a million times, but with a stellar cast that includes Idris Elba, Ray Winstone, Javier Bardem, and Mark Rylance, there's a chance that they could elevate the material into something memorable. The Gunman arrives in theaters on March 20th, 2015, and I'm guessing everyone will have forgotten all about Penn's joke by then.

Intricate BETTER CALL SAUL Cake of Bob Odenkirk's Head

More like Bob OdenCAKE, amirite? Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk has been immortalized in cake form...well, until someone comes along and eats it. But the pictures will last forever, and Natalie and the folks at Austin, Texas-based Sideserf Cake Studio have really outdone themselves with this creative confection. I have some issues with the show so far, but it's still early in its run and I'm hoping that things will start to improve quickly. Better Call Saul airs on Monday nights on AMC.

ALEX OF VENICE Trailer: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Starts Over

I've always been a big fan of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The talented actress has been taking on some solid roles lately - she's especially good in the upcoming Faults, which I saw at AFI Fest last year - and she looks to add one more strong performance to her resume with a new movie called Alex of Venice.

Chris Messina, who's been killing it on The Mindy Project as Mindy's co-worker/love interest Danny Castellano, makes his directorial debut in this film, which stars Winstead as a workaholic who's forced to reinvent herself after her husband (Messina) suddenly leaves the family. It has a nice cast, including Derek Luke, Don Johnson, and Messina himself as the husband, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this one when it debuts in theaters and on iTunes on April 17th, 2015.

Chris Pratt on the Thought of Playing INDIANA JONES

$

One of the most buzzed about rumors right now is that Chris Pratt could end up playing Indiana Jones is a reboot being developed by Disney. It was also recently reported that Steven Spielberg would like to direct the actor in the film, if the script is to his liking. I imagine Spielberg would want to develop an awesome Indiana Jones movie to make up for The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

MTV caught up with Pratt on the red carpet at the Oscars last night, and they asked him if there has been any actually movement on these reports, and if the pressure would be overwhelming for him to take on a project of such huge magnitude. This is what he had to say:

“It’s all nothing until it’s something and so far it’s not something….I don’t think it’s overwhelming to contemplate….It’d be cool. No one’s called me. (There’s) A lot of talk about it. The pressure would come just because it’s such a great franchise you wouldn’t want to get it wrong, so for me it would have to be perfect to do it. We’ll see, like I said it’s nothing until it’s something.”

The fact of the matter is, this is a project that Disney and Lucasfilm are going to eventually move forward with. Pratt is a hot item in Hollywood right now, and the fans seem to be very open to the idea of him taking on the role of the adventurous archeologist. I know I am! It’d be cool to see Pratt as Jones. Hopefully these reports turn from nothing into something soon.

Jimmy Kimmel Hilariously Teaches Acting in Cameo Filled Post-Oscars Episode

Jimmy Kimmel has developed a reputation for having one of the coolest post-Oscars TV shows of them all, largely because the show films directly across the street from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood where the Academy Awards ceremony is held each year. Personally, I don't know that it'll get better than the time Jamie Foxx performed "I Wanna Channing All Over Your Tatum," but Kimmel's back at it again (via FirstShowing) with some more fun that utilizes some of the biggest names in the film industry. I especially enjoyed the appearance of John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Kimmel's real-life friends and neighbors.

And there's also one of Kimmel's hilarious street segments of Lie Witness News, and in this one, he asks people about the Oscars and receives some staggeringly stupid responses:

Calista Flockhart To Star in SUPERGIRL TV Series

The cast of the CBS series Supergirl continues to grow. THR reports that Calista Flockhart, who rose to fame playing the title character on Ally McBeal in the late '90s and early 2000s, will play DC Comics character Cat Grant on the new procedural show opposite Melissa Benoist as Supergirl. Here are some details about the show's take on her character:

In CBS' incarnation, Cat is the self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo. Cat started her career as a reporter and has built her company into a global powerhouse.

I always remembered Cat Grant being more of a gossip columnist than a media magnate in the comics, and she came off as very sexual on the live-action Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, but I guess this is a new direction they're going with this adaptation. Kara Danvers (aka Kara Zor-El/Supergirl) will serve as Cat Grant's assistant in the series, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Devil Wears Prada-type of vibe to their relationship, at least as the series begins.

What do you think about Flockhart's return to TV?

A Heartfelt Goodbye to PARKS AND RECREATION, One of TV's Best Shows

Tomorrow night is the series finale of Parks and Recreation. I'm conflicted about this, because while I'm definitely of the mindset that shows should leave at the top of their game instead of dragging on past their prime (ahem, The Office), I'm also not emotionally ready for this terrific series to come to a close. It's become one of my favorite shows of all time, a comedy filled with an amazing all-star cast, some of the best characters in TV history, a fully fleshed-out world, and some of the most sincere, heartfelt moments I've ever seen in a sitcom.

From the wonderfully enthusiastic Leslie Knope to the legendary Ron Swanson (and his magnificent sax-playing alter ego Duke Silver), Pawnee has been full of characters I absolutely love spending time with. Has there ever been a live-action show with as deep a roster of awesome people as this one? Hilarious people were seemingly drawn to it: Patton Oswalt (remember his iconic geek-fueled filibuster?), Louis C.K., Sam Elliott, Jon Hamm, Kristen Bell, Andy Samberg, Paul Rudd, Henry Winkler, Jenny Slate, Megan Mullally, and many more all left their mark, and those were just guest stars. Ben Schwartz's work as the idiotic, smooth-talking Jean-Ralphio was my favorite of them all.

Enough digital ink has been spilled about the rise of Chris Pratt from sitcom star to movie megastar, but regardless of which characters he ends up playing on the big screen - Star-Lord, Indiana Jones, whoever - FBI agent Burt Macklin will always be my favorite. I mean, how can he NOT be after a clip like this?

The death of Li'l Sebastian, the courtship of Andy and April, Ben and Leslie's marriage, the entire history of Entertainment Seven Twenty...this show had too many fantastic moments to count. I'll miss it immensely, and I'd love for you guys to sound off with some of your favorite Parks and Rec memories in the comments below.

James Gunn Defends the Art of Superhero Movies

Last night during the Oscars, Jack Black got up and did a little joke in the opening musical number of the show singing, “Opening with lots of zeroes, all we get are superheroes: Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Jedi Man, Sequel Man, Prequel Man, formulaic scripts!"

We can have a laugh at that, because it's all true, but just because a movie is based on a comic book or superhero doesn’t mean that there’s no talent or art that goes into making them. Yeah, there have been some superhero movie duds in the past, but now that more talented people are involved with making them, those kinds of movies are just getting better and better. So of course they are going to be big blockbuster money-making hits! People aren't seeing them because they suck.

James Gunn admitted that he didn’t find Black's little rant offensive, but there was something that did strike an offensive chord with Gunn. It was a statement made by Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy at the Independent Spirit Awards, who said:

"Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think that's true spirit."

Gunn, who has made several independent films of his own in his career, stood up for himself and the rest of the filmmakers out there who are making great superhero films, and posted the following statement:

“I didn't really find the Jack Black superhero jokes offensive, did you guys? It was, like, a joke. I'm not sure if you guys noticed, but the writing on the Oscars didn't seem to be all that well thought out.
“As far as Dan Gilroy saying that attendees of the Independent Spirit Awards have survived against a "tsunami of superhero films" - well it seems a bit weird coming from a guy whose wife has acted in two Thor films - really, that seems like you've drowned horribly in that tsunami. But I know I just kind of make up stuff as I go along on these awards shows, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I've already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.
“I’ve made B-movies, independent films, children's movies, horror films, and gigantic spectacles. I find there are plenty of people everywhere making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity. And then there are people who do what they do because they love story-telling, they love cinema, and they want to add back to the world some of the same magic they've taken from the works of others. In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film.
“If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we're dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a "serious" filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.”

This is where the slow clap begins, and then escalates to the roar of the geek community crowd cheering Gunn on.

If you recall, There Will Be Blood and Inherent Vice director Paul Thomas Anderson also defended superhero movies. You can read what he had to say about that here. Then we have Robert Redford, one of the biggest supporters of independent filmmaking, who is also a supporter of big giant superhero movies by actually playing the villain in one!

I personally think maybe Gilroy is just a little jealous that he hasn’t been offered to direct a superhero movie yet. What do you think?

DC & Marvel Characters Battle Transformers in This Berserk Mashup

What would happen if Batman, Superman, and The Flash joined up with Spider-Man and The Avengers to face off against the Decepticons from Transformers? What if Optimus Prime was the good guys' secret weapon? If you answered "utter chaos," ding ding ding! You're correct! The latest fan mashup from Alex Luthor (the dude who's created fake trailers for Captain America: Civil War, Star Wars vs. Star Trek, and Star Wars vs. DC/Marvel already this year) imagines that scenario, and as you might expect, things get pretty crazy as missiles, rockets, and explosions fill the skies while the battle for Earth rages on. It was pretty clever to combine the Cosmic Cube with the Allspark, which made for some nice crossover lines of dialogue that worked pretty well in this context. Would you pay to see a full movie of this in theaters?

Have Rick and his crew actually come across a group of people who will be more of a help than a hindrance to them? I hope so, but I’m like Rick. Even though these guys seem nice, I just think that there’s something off about them, and they are headed into a shit storm of something! The next episode is called “Remember,” and below you will find an episode description and promo to show us what’s in store.

The group has a difficult time molding to a new lifestyle, forcing them to consider whether they can be the people they once were.

Sesame Street Parodies HOUSE OF CARDS

I have been loving that Sesame Street has been parodying TV shows and movies that are totally not appropriate for kids. Their latest one is called "House of Bricks," and it is a parody of the dark and disturbing political drama House of Cards. It’s also one of the most enjoyable takes on the Three Little Pigs story that I’ve ever seen.

Some people say there's too much pork in this town. Frank Underwolf could not agree more. And that is why Mr. Underwolf is on a mission to huff and puff and blow down all the little pigs' houses. In this town, you have to know which way the wind is blowing, and unfortunately, for those little piggies, it's about to get very windy.

Brutal Red-Band Trailer for THE DEAD LANDS

brutal-red-band-trailer-for-the-dead-lands

The Dead Lands has the makings of an amazing film. I’m seriously impressed with what I’ve seen from the trailers that have been released, and I can’t wait to finally get to watch this thing! The film comes from New Zealand, and it is an intense, action-packed story involving tribes of Maori warriors, and a man who embarks on a mission of revenge after his tribe has been slaughtered.

The movie has just made my list of most anticipated films of the year. Just wait until you watch this brutal and bloody red-band trailer. It seriously looks insane! This is going to be The Raid of Maori warrior films.

Hongi (James Rolleston) - a Maori chieftain’s teenage son - must avenge his father's murder in order to bring peace and honour to the souls of his loved ones after his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery. Vastly outnumbered by a band of villains, led by Wirepa (Te Kohe Tuhaka), Hongi’s only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Warrior (Lawrence Makoare), a ruthless fighter who has ruled the area for years.

The film is set to be released on iTunes, On Demand, and in theaters on April 17th.

Darth Vader Set to Appear in STAR WARS REBELS Season Finale

Next Monday is the season finale of Star Wars Rebels, and Disney XD has released an exciting promo trailer that features TIE fighters battling The Ghost, Kanan and Ezra taking on The Inquisitor, and the return of Darth Vader!

This has been such a fun show to watch and follow, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. The final episode in the season is called “Fire Across the Galaxy,” and it features the second appearance of Lord Vader after his cameo in the version of the pilot that aired on ABC. The character is voiced by none other than James Earl Jones.

There's no word on how big his role will be in the episode, but it's still cool to see that he's back. Just in case that doesn't get you excited enough for the season finale, here's a tweet from Freddie Prinze Jr. (Kanan) that he posted after he watched the final two episodes.

Set between the events of Star Wars: Episodes III and IV, the “Star Wars Rebels” story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet and are ruining the lives of its people. The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost – cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the “muscle” Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and grumpy old astromech droid Chopper – will face threatening new villains, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the first season concludes. You can watch the trailer below, along with a clip from the first time we saw Darth Vader in the series.

Top 10 Tower Defense Games for Mobile

$

0

The first tower defense game I can remember playing was a custom map for Warcraft III. After that I spent endless hours playing flash-based games like Desktop Tower Defense. That all changed with the release of the iPhone. Since then I've played countless mobile tower defense games, and I'm always on the hunt for a new one. I'm writing this post hoping readers will suggest a game I haven't played yet.

This list does not include city/base defense games like Clash of Clans or Boom Beach. I might do a post on those games in the future.

Kingdom Rush, Kingdom Rush Frontiers, Kingdom Rush Origins

iOS & Android
Ironhide Game Studio

The Kingdom Rush trilogy of tower defense games is absolute perfection and what I judge all others against. Because they are paid games, they are perfectly paced and balanced experiences that are a reward to replay on higher difficulties. Each installment has unique high powered towers that give each game a distinctive feel. Ironhide occasionally adds new levels for free and gets me addicted to those games all over again.

Plants Vs Zombies

iOS & Android
Pop Cap

Plants Vs. Zombies is the best grid based tower defense game. It is crazy addictive and has balanced level progression. The many inventive plants/towers work together for a nearly endless combination of tactics. Add in level variation like night, pool, roof, fog, graveyard, and mini games, and you've got a game with tons of depth.

Plants Vs. Zombies 2 is a game I truly hate. Lots of the balanced and fun level progression was removed so that they could turn it into a free-to-play, grind-filled hell. I'd gladly pay for a third installment if it went back to the roots that served the first game so well.

iBomber Defense Pacific

iOS & Android
Chillingo

iBomber Defense Pacific is a game with a rewarding level of difficulty. Towers can take damage from incoming attacks, you have a very limited number to tower placements, and the number of units in a wave can be staggering as they come from all directions at once. It really does feel like you are holding a strategic line.

Fieldrunners 2

iOS & Android
Subatomic Studios

Fieldrunners 2 has a lot of variety in level design, and its difficulty is well balanced. The number units in a wave can get crazy high. However, the towers are pretty basic and not as inventive as the games higher on this list.

Royal Revolt II

iOS & Android
Flaregames

Royal Revolt II is a bit of a hybrid that is part tower defense, tower attack, RPG, and city defense. While the game is free-to-play, it's never a tedious, painful grind. There is a lot of potential for the game if they add more towers and unit types. I played this for a month and a half solid before progressing so far that I became bored by the lack of new things to do or unlock.

Star Wars Galactic Defense

iOS & Android
:DeNA

Star Wars Galactic Defense is a free-to-play that ramps up to a nearly impossible difficulty level thats so fun. Siding with the Empire or Rebels is pretty superficial without much variation between the two campaigns in terms of real game mechanics. Star Wars characters act as "heroes," and it's really fun to unlock and upgrade them. There is a bit of grinding — it's free-to-play after all — otherwise this game would be ranked much higher.

Alien Creeps

iOS & Android
Outplay Entertainment

Alien Creeps has great art and story and doesn't feel like a free-to-play game. It has extra heroes that you can pay to unlock, and upgrades that take a couple of hours are the only time barriers, but they are hardly intrusive and don't stop you from playing. The towers are pretty standard fare, and but the "challenge" mission are pretty fun. The only drawback to the game is that it's not much of a challenge.

Prime World: Defenders

iOS & Android
Nival

Prime World: Defenders has gorgeous graphics and levels that can be really challenging. It's free-to-play with obvious grinding. The level layouts are really good and make repeat play not as much of a chore.

Tower Defense: Infinite War

iOS & Android
Com2uS Corp.

Tower Defense: Infinite War is a pretty basic tower defense game  that just has an insane amount of levels. I found myself beating most levels with just two type of towers. This game is free-to-play but can be played offline.

geoDefense Swarm

iOS & Windows Phone
Critical Thought Games

geoDefense Swarm would be #2 on this list if it worked on iOS 8. As it currently stands, the game is broken. The simple vector graphics, limiting hexagonal grid, and inventive levels are just pure fun. I really wish the game still worked. It should be noted that geoDefense works with iOS 8, but is not as good as Swarm. I would love for someone to pick up the game's formula, as the developer seems to have little interest in maintaining or updating the game.
