THE BABADOOK Gets a Great Dr. Seuss Movie Mashup

the-babadook-gets-a-great-dr-seuss-movie-mashup

The Babadook was one of my favorite horror films last year, and now here is this great video mashup that combines the film with Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat. The result of the Horror Report created mashup is fantastically fun, perfectly blending the horror of The Babadook with the silliness of The Cat in the Hat. It actually turned out to be kind of terrifying. What I love about this whole thing that if Dr. Seuss did make a horror book, I imagine it would be almost exactly like The Babadook. I hope you like it!

Colin Firth’s KINGSMAN Casting Was Contingent on Him Pulling off the Church Scene

After seeing Colin Firth kicking ass in Kingsman: The Secret Service, I can’t imagine anyone else as super agent Harry Hart. He was amazing, and you might be surprised to learn that there was a good chance that he might not have landed the role.

There's an incredibly insane action sequence in the film that featured Hart brutally kicking all kinds of ass in a church. The scene blew my mind with wonderfully colorful explosives. It was that scene that could have kept Firth from joining the movie. In a recent interview with MTV, director Matthew Vaughn explained that if he didn’t think Firth could pull off the sequence, he wouldn’t have cast him.

Vaughn gave the actor three months to train for the scene to prove that he could do it.

“I was like… this is a physical role and you’re going to have to train for the next six months. And if you’re not willing to do it, I’m not willing to give you the role. To be blunt, after three months, I’m going to test you. If I think you’re going to pull it off, then you’ve got the role. But if I think you don’t, you’re going to thank me for not casting you, because the worst thing [that] can happen is you look like an idiot doing this stuff in a church. Both of our credibility is gone at that point. So there’s no point in you blindly doing this movie thinking we’re going to pull off the action [and that church fight sequence], because we won’t. And to his credit, he said, ‘I get it. I’m going to train.’ And he trained like you wouldn’t believe. And he pulled it off.”

Hell yeah, he did! I really happy that all worked out for everyone. It's cool that Firth wanted the part so badly that he worked his ass off to get it.

BACK TO THE FUTURE DeLorean iPhone 6 Case Is Totally Gigawatts!

A couple of weeks ago we showed you an incredibly cool iPhone case inspired by the Batmobile from Tim Burton’s Batman. Today we bring you one that I think is even more awesome. It’s a Back to the Future DeLorean time machine replica case for the iPhone 6!

This detailed case is basically a miniature model, and it even comes with working LED lights. With a flux capacitor app under the hood of this thing, you could send this sucker back to the future! (Provided that you can throw it up to 88mph.) If that’s the case, you’re going to see some serious shit.

It may not be the most practical case to carry around, but it sure is great. You can pre-order yours at Bandai for $50.

Thanks to Casting24/7 we have a break down of the characters who are set to appear in director Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds' long awaited Deadpool movie. Pre-production is currently underway, and Reynolds has even posted a photo teasing the Deadpool costume that he'll be sporting in the movie.

Below, you'll find the list of characters along with a brief description of each one. It is interesting to note that some of the roles require sequel options, so it looks like there's a good chance we could see multiple Deadpool movies if the first one succeeds, which is great!

  • [RIDGE] Any ethnicity, early 30s to early 50s. Big, muscular, dangerous, violent, vain, insecure and more than a bit of a dick…. but with a sense of humor. He is not a psychopath, he’s practical but morally neutral—he doesn’t enjoy torturing people, he just doesn’t care. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SEQUEL OPTIONS.
  • [LINDSAY] Any ethnicity, 20s, attractive and worldly. Smart, tough, beautiful but a little bit broken. Nothing has ever been easy for her and she’s developed a thick skin and cynical outlook. But she’s not a victim—she may not have a great life but she’s holding it together and does what she needs to get by. She’s got a great sense of humor but it leans heavily towards irony and sarcasm. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SEQUEL OPTIONS.
  • [SIMON] Any ethnicity, late 20s to early 40s. Quirky, great sense of humor. Smart, funny, but more than a little bit slippery. Fast talker, always looking to make a buck. He looks out for himself first and foremost, but reveals loyalty at the end of the day. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SEQUEL OPTIONS
  • [SHIRLIE] African American, late 60s to early 80s. Worldly, great sense of comedic timing, sarcastic, dry, funny. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SERIES OPTIONS.
  • [KATHY] Any ethnicity, early to mid teens. World weary, great sense of comedic timing, sarcastic, droll sense of humor. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SERIES OPTIONS.
  • [KEREN] Any ethnicity, early 20s to late 30s. Serious, big, tough. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SERIES OPTIONS
  • [ALBERT] Any ethnicity, early 30s to early 50s. Big, muscular, dangerous. ROLE REQUIRES THREE SERIES OPTIONS

Reynolds will be joined by T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein, and Gina Carano. The film will also reportedly feature the X-Men mutant Colossus. It’s unclear, though, if Daniel Cudmore will reprise the role.

The script for the film comes from Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. It is scheduled to be released on February 12th, 2016.

Apple Designer Jonathan Ive Influenced the Crossguard Lightsaber in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

One of the most talked about things in the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the crossguard lightsaber that the villain Kylo Ren was brandishing. When director J.J. Abrams was trying to come up with a new design aesthetic for the ancient Jedi weapon, he consulted with Apple designer Jonathan "Jony" Ive. Ive is the man responsible for designing the iPhone and iPad.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Ive gave some insight into how he helped influence the new lightsaber design that Abrams ended up using. Apparently he gave the director some ideas about what might make a lightsaber more interesting. He told the New Yorker,

"'I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty.' A redesigned weapon could be 'more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous.'"

I think it’s great that Abrams solicited Ive's opinion, and it seems as if he took Ive’s general concept and put it to use when coming up with the new lightsaber design. Everything in his description comes across in what we’ve seen so far. I’m sure the crossguard lightsaber isn’t the only kind of new saber that we will see in the movie either. I can’t wait to see more when the movie is released on December 18th, 2015.

Mark Ruffalo Talks AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and the Future Of The Hulk

We've heard for a while that the Hulk is going to have a much more prominent role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and fans hope that one day we will see the Hulk get his own movie again. Like all of you, I'm excited to see Hulk storyline play out in Age of Ultron

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Mark Ruffalo talks about his next big Marvel movie, the character he plays, and where the future of the Hulk lies. Here are a few of the most interesting parts of the interview.

When talking about the state of Banner at the beginning of the film, he gives the following info:

"I think he’s definitely matured a little bit since the last one. He’s become more acclimated to this thing and to being part of the team. I think he feels more a part of them all. But in this particular take on it, it’s a much more character-driven version of The Avengers than the first one. It gets a little deeper into each character. S.H.I.E.L.D. is not happening anymore, so there’s not that much time spent with the S.H.I.E.L.D. stuff. I feel that every character has their own cool little thing happening. I had great stuff in the last one but there’s even more stuff in this one. It’s nice, because I know this character now after playing him twice…"

Here he goes into a little more detail on the Hulk and the control Banner has over him:

"Hulk is the kind of wild card. He’s the loose cannon of the group. He’s more like an atom bomb. You could guess where he’s going to go but he could go either way. I think that there is, obviously, the day when everyone expects it to go wrong and that day comes. And they’re ready. And Bruce designed the contingency plan. As much as you feel Bruce has some mastery over it – certainly, with ‘I’m always angry’ and he can turn into it at will – I still feel that there’s some part of him that doesn’t completely trust it and doesn’t completely trust himself.
"There’s a battle going on between these two opposing egos that live inside him. He’s definitely worried that the day is going to come when the Hulk gets the best of him, and maybe won’t release him, maybe won’t give him back. The Hulk knows this too. There’s a moment in here where he, begrudgingly, decides to go back to Banner. Who knows where these things will go, but as Bruce is able to impress his will on the Hulk, going into The Hulk and being inside the Hulk when he’s raging, The Hulk’s will is also growing and able to impress upon Bruce. That makes for some wild things. We’re laying the groundwork for that here. It’ll be interesting to see if that ends up being what would be the next Hulk movie."

When asked about the next Hulk film, he said:

"Who knows, really? That’s such an amorphous thing. Nobody has talked to me about that yet. It seems people want it, but it’s tough. They’ve already done two of ‘em, and they’ve only done two Thors, they had a nice run on Iron Man. I feel like they have their plates full. There’s probably other people they’re keen on doing but I think people have shown that they’re ready to see another one."

He goes on to explain the challenges of making a standalone Hulk movie, as well as the special effects work that goes into bring this character to life:

"It’s a tough nut to crack. Traditionally you’re watching a guy who doesn’t want to do the very thing that you want him to do. It’s hard to take for two hours. I don’t know how many times you can use that same framing for it, but now he’s maturing and there’s a cool dynamic growing between Banner and The Hulk. And the CGI is so much better. The stuff we can do now, you can do a real performance. I’ve been working with Andy Serkis [at his Imaginarium studio] and he has it set up where you go in there and you just start working on a character. It is so exciting to me, because I can do whatever I can imagine, with a team of people of course.
"The nuances you can bring… I can make The Hulk as real as any other character I’ve ever played and in ways more nuanced, more interesting. It’s boundless. The technology is at such a place where I can do that in real time. There’s a big giant screen and a bunch of them all over the place and I’m in my stretchy motion-capture suit and there’s The Hulk right in front of me, doing everything I do. You become a puppeteer and you’re creating the way this guy moves and the way he expresses himself, and there’s a facial capture happening at the same time. In the past you would do your face, you’d move your head and you’d do all the scenes with your features and they’d capture that all and scan everything. Then I said, ‘Why don’t I play the scenes and give you that?’ We did that but it was very much taking the information from the actor and then gobbing it all together. Now I can do all of that with every nuance and I hang out there for six hours at a time. Let’s try this, what if he’s like this? All of a sudden you’re building this thing that no-one ever imagined. It’s based on the script but it’s also free. What we can do with The Hulk now… oh my gosh, it’s going to be mind-blowing."

Hulk and Bruce Banner are such complex characters, and it sounds like Marvel is handling the character perfectly at the moment. I just hope we do get that standalone film somewhere down the line, and I have my fingers crossed for Planet Hulk.  To read more from the interview, click here.

Interstellar is returning to theaters for one day only this Saturday, but if you've seen the film already and don't plan on checking it out again, this new interview may be right up your alley. Looper and Star Wars Episode VIII writer/director Rian Johnson sat down with Christopher Nolan at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica last month to interview him about the Matthew McConaughey space adventure, and the audio from their conversation has made its way online (via Collider).

Johnson is a true movie nerd (as well as an exceptional filmmaker himself), and this is a very cool conversation between two of my personal favorite filmmakers about one of last year's most divisive movies.

The latest TV spot for Pixar's Inside Out basically introduces us to all of the emotional characters in the film. It also features some delightful new footage from the highly anticipated movie, including a glimpse of what it's like for these characters when there's a brain freeze. The emotions in the movie are voiced by Amy PoehlerPhyllis SmithBill HaderLewis Black, and Mindy Kaling. Here's the synopsis:

Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Poehler), Fear (Hader), Anger (Black), Disgust (Kaling) and Sadness (Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Gavin Aung Than of Zen Pencils created this charming comic strip from a quote by author Robert Fulghum. It's called "A Mutual Weirdness," and it wonderfully defines what love might be for some of us geeks. Here's a note from the artist:

"This is one of the most-requested quotes I get and I’ve been wanting to adapt it for awhile now. Besides being a wonderful message, the main reason I wanted to feature it was so I could give proper credit to the author. The entire internet seems to think this is a Dr Seuss quote, but it’s actually from Robert Fulghum, the best-selling author of All I Really Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten. The origin of the quote was researched by the fantastic Quote Investigator, with the real source being Fulghum’s book True Love. So hopefully this comic helps in giving Mr Fulghum his due."

I hope you enjoy it.

Impressive Trailer for Single-Take Action Film VICTORIA

$

Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity seems to have popularized the idea of filming in one long, continuous shot - or at least giving the illusion of there only being one shot. Shows like True Detective and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia recently employed the technique, and most notably Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman garnered nine Academy Award nominations after using that method, but there's a new movie coming out of Berlin that might have topped them all when it comes to the one-shot aesthetic. The Playlist points us to a trailer for a film called Victoria, and the trailer boasts that the entire movie was shot in an unbroken single take. That's pretty damn impressive if it's true.

Director Sebastian Schipper's movie is earning solid reviews out of the Berlinale Film Festival, and apparently it's already been scooped up for U.S. distribution, so we'll all have a chance to see it sooner or later. I'm always entranced by long continuous shots, and the idea of literally making an entire movie that way is both horrifying from a production standpoint and exciting from an acting standpoint. It means that everything has to be perfect for the entire time: no hidden cuts or CG can save you. It's all out there on the line. That kind of audacious filmmaking deserves to be acknowledged and seen, so I'm glad we'll have a chance to check this out for ourselves.

As The Walking Dead continues to kick ass on AMC and in the comics, Top10Memes has released a list of top ten interesting facts about the property that you might not be familiar with. One of the more intriguing things that is pointed out is how The Walking Dead takes place in the same universe as Breaking Bad. I never caught any of those references, and it's pretty awesome. FRIDAY THE 13TH Sequel Could Explain Jason’s Immortality

friday-the-13th-sequel-could-explain-jasons-immortality

Another Friday The 13th sequel is currently in development, and one day we’ll see Jason Voorhees back up on the big screen slashing people up. I didn’t really care for the last movie that was made back in 2009. It was just a cash-grab type of movie, just like this upcoming sequel will most likely be. It’s hard to believe that they will try to do anything new with the character or rebrand the franchise. I imagine that it’s just going to once again follow Jason in the woods killing stupid-ass teenagers. But according to a new interview, they might actually explore the character a little further.

Producer Brad Fuller recently spoke with Esquire and talked about the upcoming sequel, and it sounds like they might actually explore the character’s immortality. Here’s what he said about it:

“There’s always been this supernatural aspect to these movies. It defies logic that, you see Jason get killed in every movie, including ours, the 2009 one. And then he comes back and no one’s ever really investigated what that is. So that’s something that I think about a little bit. Like it is supernatural, but what is he? Those are the things that we’re toying with. Nothing has been decided. But those type of things: How does he always come back?
“People traditionally want to understand exactly how and why things happen, and yet something so odd happens at the end of these movies and no one seems to question it. So people come to the movie with the expectation that the real villain will be killed and come back. And yet we never toyed with that notion….Those are the things that we’re asking ourselves. And we’ll see what comes of it.”

Even though it might be interesting to see what kind of explanation they come up with as to why Jason is the way he is, this is one of those characters in which the mystery behind him makes things more intriguing. There doesn’t really need to be a reason behind Jason's existence to have keep coming back and killing people. That’s what makes him so cool!

Remember when Rob Zombie gave Michael Meyers an origin story in his Halloween remake by basically making him some white trash kid with terrible parents? That took all the fun out of who the character is. Plain and simple, he’s just pure evil. I think the mystery should stay a mystery with these iconic horror charcters. What do you think about the possibility of seeing an explanation of Jason’s immortality?

The latest in Break's Super-Fan Builds series takes inspiration from Disney-Pixar's Up, with prop master Tim Baker and his team creating a doghouse that looks exactly like Carl's house from the movie. I love the detail that the team puts into these builds - the one about the Batmobile stroller was particularly cool - and this project is no exception. There are so many tiles and shingles to recreate, not to mention making the balloons and carving the porch posts by hand. Seeing the pure joy this guy gets as he sees his new doghouse for the first time will put a smile on your face.

Dutch Company Narrows Down Candidates to Colonize Mars

$

A few years ago, we wrote about a Dutch venture called Mars One that planned to send ordinary citizens to colonize Mars. Well, despite the idea being fairly crazy (they're not real astronauts!) and designed in large part to make a reality TV show based on narrowing down the contestants, they're still plugging along with their plan. NBC News has the latest update about their progress, stating that the company has selected 50 men and 50 women to compete to be the first to head to Mars - permanently - to begin a colony.

Look, I love the idea of space exploration, but there's a level of practicality that doesn't seem like it's being considered in this project. Here's a telling bit of info from the NBC report:

Mars One estimates that it will need billions of dollars to conduct its Mars missions, including a robotic rover mission planned for launch in 2018. The money question is the biggest unknown right now, but last year an MIT study concluded that the venture's plan to send humans to Mars and keep them alive was "overly optimistic" on technical grounds.

If the geniuses at MIT are saying that this probably isn't going to happen, I doubt very seriously that the Dutch are going to be able to somehow secure the billions of dollars necessary to pull this off. Not to mention the fact that they're apparently choosing civilians as their "contestants," not astronauts who have spent the proper amount of time learning and training to make a trip like this.

Again, I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't see this happening any time soon. The Dutch, meanwhile, claim that their manned missions could begin as soon as 2024. I guess time will tell if they'll be able to make it happen. What do you think?

(If anything, this whole story just reminded me of Michael Caine's funny quote from Austin Powers: Goldmember.)

I was actually really excited to see Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles of Harry and Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber To. I was really hoping that the sequel would deliver some great comedy, like the first movie did. Even though the movie had a few laughs, it unfortunately wasn't the great sequel that I hoped it would be. The gang over at Screen Junkies feel our pain, and they've released a funny Honest Trailer for the film that you're sure to enjoy. The video is actually more entertaining than the movie itself.

Details on STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT and How it Links to THE FORCE AWAKENS

details-on-star-wars-battlefront-and-how-it-links-to-the-force-awakens

Thanks to Making Star Wars, we have a huge list of cool rumors regarding the video game Star Wars: Battlefront. This game is one of my most anticipated Star Wars-related properties that's being released, and to make things even more awesome, apparently it is going to be linked to J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The following information is just rumors at this point, but if you're curious to see what the game could entail, here are several interesting points from their list:

  • The story of Star Wars: Battlefront’s campaign will span pretty much the entire Star Wars saga.
  • Star Wars Battlefront will feature segments in which you play as both the good guys (Old Republic, Rebellion and Republic) and bad guys (Separatists and the Empire). It was specifically stated that there will be a small portion of prequel trilogy content. You will participate in a couple of battles from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the space battle above Corsucant [sic] from the beginning of Revenge of the Sith.
  • The majority of the campaign will take place during the original trilogy era. All of the battles and settings that you would expect to be there will be playable. It was said that the campaign itself is pretty long when compared to other first person shooters.
  • There will be some segments of the campaign which take place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. There won’t be a lot because in their words “Lucasfilm has a lot of plans for that era.”
  • The last section of the campaign takes place before and during the opening segments of The Force Awakens. Don’t expect anything too revealing, because the game is expected to ship about a month before the movie releases.
  • For both the Republic (that’s what the good guys are being called in the production here) and Empire sections you will be playing characters that actually appear in The Force Awakens.
  • EA/DICE was allowed into Pinewood Studios for a few days to scan and capture props, sets, etc for recreation in the game.
  • At one point either during either the portion between episodes 6 and 7 or the portion from the beginning of The Force Awakens a character with the last name Tarkin appears.
  • The scale of the multiplayer is going to be absolutely massive with up 64 players participating on each side.
  • Space to land battles are absolutely happening, but will only be available in certain game modes.
  • The game will ship with several The Force Awakens characters already, but some won’t be added until DLC. Specifically all of the characters in the trailers will be available at launch, as will new versions of the X-wing an TIE fighter.
  • Tons of new ships and vehicles.
  • The contents of each DLC will contain at least three new maps, new hero characters, and new vehicles/ships.

I hope all of this stuff turns out to be true because it all sounds so freakin' radical! For some additional information that I didn't include above, click here.

Deadpool and Harley Quinn Art - "Fifty Shades of Wade"

Artist Marco D'Alfonso has created another amusing piece of Harley Quinn and Deadpool art. It's called "Too Many Feelings," and I loved the "Fifty Shades of Wade" caption. I thought that was funny, especially with the Fifty Shades of Grey madness that's currently flooding society. The only way I'd watch Fifty Shades of Grey is if it starred these two characters. The illustration was part of the latest The Line is Drawn challenge, which focused on a mashup of Superheroes and Valentine's Day. This was easily the best one in their collection.

Daniel Cudmore Won't Return to Play Colossus in DEADPOOL

Actor Daniel Cudmore has portrayed the mutant Colossus in X2, X-Men 3: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. But it looks like his time as the metallic Russian is at an end, because he's taken to Twitter to reveal that he won't be reprising his role in the upcoming Deadpool film. We learned last week that Colossus would be a part of the movie, but this confirms that the part will be recast.

I hate to say it, but Cudmore has basically been a non-factor for me in these movies. Colossus was never given a large enough role in the story for him to make much of an impact, and it's a bummer that he wasn't really given a shot to truly make that character his own. But fans of the character should be pleased that Colossus is being given a seemingly significant part in Deadpool opposite Ryan Reynolds, so we'll have to see who director Tim Miller ends up choosing to play the hulking mutant this time. Any suggestions?

Dead Man Wears Green Lantern Costume at His Own Wake

This is one of the strangest comic-related stories I've read since I heard about that Marvel fan who cut off his nose to look like the Captain America villain Red Skull. According to the New York Daily News (via Screencrush), a Puerto Rican man named Renato Garcia was dressed in a Green Lantern costume and posed to make it appear that he was standing at his own wake. His sister was the one who dressed him in the costume, which he reportedly wore for weeks after finding it in a bag of donated clothes.

Wow. This is the kind of thing I'd expect to see on The Onion, not in a real news story. It's sort of crazy, but at the same time, I guess if wearing this costume made Mr. Garcia happy, then more power to him. This definitely takes comic book fanaticism to an entirely different level. If you're interested, there are more photos at NY Daily News.

Watch: Behind the Scenes of PlayStation's POWERS TV Series

PlayStation is getting into the original programming playing field, and their first big TV series is Powers, a show based on the Brian Michael Bendis comic of the same name. The company has just released a detailed look at the production, featuring interviews with Bendis, the crew, and the cast, including stars Sharlto Copley, Eddie Izzard, Susan Heyward, and Michelle Forbes.

At least fans don't have to worry about a perceived LOST syndrome: executive producer Charlie Huston comes right out and says that he already knows exactly how the series will end and who will be left standing when all is said and done. But he also seems to delight in revealing that he's not a fan of happy endings, which makes me wonder just how dark this series will go.

Powers premieres on the PlayStation Network on March 10th, and you can stream new episodes on subsequent Tuesdays on the PlayStation Store. What do you guys think? Looking forward to this show?
