KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Super Bowl TV Spot

$

The Super Bowl TV spots continue to pile up. In addition to ads for Insurgent, Tomorrowland, Minions, Terminator Genisys, and Hot Tub Time Machine 2, here's a new one for Matthew Vaughn's upcoming Kingsman: The Secret Service. I've been hearing mostly positive things from early screenings of this movie, and hopefully it lives up to expectations. And I'm not sure if I've just been avoiding most of the marketing for this one so far, or if this is actually new footage, but that huge, chaotic fight sequence with Colin Firth dodging bar stools looks pretty freakin' nuts. Kingsman arrives in theaters on February 13th, and it should be an entertaining couple of hours to say the least.

When I Grow Up: A Short

"When I Grow Up" is an animated short by Colin Hesterly about a young boy imagining his future. It's got a kind of classic 1960s Disney vibe to it and is very heartwarming. I'm still not sure what I want to be when I grow up, but it's fun trying to figure that out.

Jamie Foxx & Michelle Monaghan to Star in Remake of French Action Film SLEEPLESS NIGHT

$

By now, there have been so many American adaptations of foreign films that we should be used to the idea of American studios piggybacking off of the success of other countries' movies. Such is the case with Sleepless Night, a 2011 French action film that received a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, because that film is now getting a remake. Variety reports that Jamie Foxx and True Detective star Michelle Monaghan are set to lead the cast, and someone named Baran Bo Odar is directing.

Action junkies will get a kick out of the original film, which followed a crooked cop who must save his son when a drug deal goes south. It's a fast-paced story, and one that both Foxx and Monaghan should be well-suited to remake. I'm tired of hearing complaints about how Hollywood is all out of original ideas — the current business model leans heavily on there being an established audience for a property before it gets the greenlight, so I'm not surprised at all that a film like this is being remade for the stateside crowd. Open Road is financing and distributing the movie, though no release date has been set.

Batman + Wonder Woman: Shipping Art Collection by Jasric

I didn't know what "shipping" was until my lovely wife explained it to me. Basically, it's rooting for two people, real or fictional, to get together and fall in love. Artist Jasric is very much a Batman and Wonder Woman shipper. I don't know what the name of this particular ship is, because ships have names like "Bennifer" (anyone remember that?). I've selected just a handful of Jasric's art, but if you're into Wonbat/Batwon (I just made that up), you can find a lot more in her DeviantArt gallery.

Review: MISSISSIPPI GRIND, Gambling Movie with Ryan Reynolds - Sundance 2015

review-for-mississippi-grind-gambling-movie-with-ryan-reynolds-sundance-2015

I'm a sucker for movies that are set in the world of poker and gambling. I'm just fascinated by the lifestyle, the adrenaline rush, and the addiction aspect that engulfs the people who are a part of that world. Things like that tend to make for interesting stories. Rounders is one of my favorites, and I'm always on the lookout for the next Rounders-type film.

Mississippi Grind is a movie that revolves around poker, and even though it's no Rounders, it gets pretty close - especially with its engaging story that involves interesting characters.

The story follows a poker player named Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) that has a talent of reading the people he plays poker with. He's good at the game, but he also has an addiction problem, and he owes a lot of individuals around town a lot of money. The only problem is he doesn't have the money to pay them back, and his mental and physical well-being is threatened by this.

The movie begins with Gerry joining a poker game, and while he's playing, a mysterious character named Curtis (Ryan Reynolds) buys into the game. Curtis is extremely charming and funny and Gerry is leery of him at first, but eventually ends up taking a liking to him. Turns out that Curtis is a guy who just travels, making his way through the world on one adventure after another.

The two characters seem to hit it off, and Gerry convinces Curtis to spot him some money and hit the road for a high stakes poker game down south. If Gerry wins, they split the winnings and Gerry will be able to pay off his debtors. Gerry wants Curtis along for the ride because he believes that Curtis is his lucky charm, and Curtis being the adventurer that he is, happily obliges, and the journey begins. Along the way they stop off at smaller poker games to win the money that they need to enter the tournament.

The two have quite an interesting adventure together, and it had both its amusing and unsettling ups and downs. I really enjoyed spending time with these characters, getting to know them and seeing what made them tick. It was a fantastic character study, and it helped that the acting by the two main actors was top notch.

Reynolds has been out of the limelight with big blockbuster feature films recently, which is fine because he's been kicking ass in the indie film sector. He has consistently been giving solid performances in movies like this that a lot of people won't see him in. He'll be back in a big way with Deadpool though! As for Mendelsohn, he completely nails his character, and gives an amazing performance. He's mostly known as a character actor, but a role like this might just launch his career into a new stratosphere. At least I hope it does! Someone in Hollywood has to notice his talent and give him a shot in another great project.

If you like movies that deal with the subject matter of gambling, then this is a movie definitely worth checking out. I don't think it will get a wide theatrical release, but I'm sure it will eventually end up on VOD and Netflix.

The film was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Here's the official description:

Gerry is a talented poker player, but his gambling habit is getting the best of him. One day, he meets a charismatic young traveler named Curtis. Deeming Curtis his lucky charm, Gerry convinces him that they should hit the road together. As they gamble their way down South toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans, the trip’s highs and lows unveil the duo’s true character and motivation, and an undeniable bond forms between them.

Writers/directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck return to the Sundance Film Festival (Half Nelson, Sugar) with an intoxicating story of compulsive gamblers that flawlessly captures the seedy world of small-time losers and dreamers. The film’s atmosphere of frenzied hope and paranoia at the various racetracks, bars, and casinos is suffused with an evocative soundtrack and enlivened by two pitch-perfect performances. Ryan Reynolds shines as the confident, jocular Curtis. But the film’s true revelation is Ben Mendelsohn, who, as Gerry, is finally given a leading role in an American film and crushes it. Mississippi Grind instantly joins the classic canon of films about gambling.

37 Movies That Share Their Name With A Michael Jackson Song

You wouldn't know it from the film's lack of marketing, but a new movie called Black or White debuted in theaters today. Despite the presence of stars Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer, I've never seen a trailer or TV spot for the movie, which BoxOfficeMojo says is in over 1,000 theaters right now. (Apparently the film played at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and didn't receive very favorable reviews.) I don't ever plan on watching this film, but that doesn't mean that I can't come up with a tangentially-related article about it. Black or White got me thinking: what other movies share a title with a Michael Jackson song?

As far as ground rules go, there's really only one major one: the title of the movie and the song have to match exactly - if a word is possessive, I'm not making an exception. Exact matches or GTFO. I'll embed relevant music videos when they're available. So cross-referencing this Wikipedia page that lists all of Jackson's songs with IMDb, let's get started!

Bad

Album: Bad, 1987

The Film: Andy Warhol produced this 1977 movie about a hairdresser who provides hit men with their next victim. Let's try to lighten things up a little bit.

Rachael Taylor Cast as Hellcat in Marvel's A.K.A. JESSICA JONES

The Netflix and Marvel series A.K.A. Jessica Jones just cast Rachael Taylor as Patricia “Trish” Walker. I've only seen her in Transformers and 666 Park Avenue, so I'm going to try to not prejudge this Australian actress too harshly as I haven't seen her more acclaimed work. She will be suiting up as the hero Hellcat. I'm not familiar with the character at all and based on the lack of good art out there, I'm guessing she's pretty obscure. From what I've gleaned, she has psionic abilities and can move objects via telekinesis. I'm fully expecting the yellow catsuit to be toned down or adapted into something far more practical.

So far, Taylor joins Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), David Tennant (Kilgrave), and Mike Colter (Luke Cage). Because this will potentially fit into the Marvel cineverse, we already have some high expectations for the quality and tone of the series.

A.K.A. Jessica Jones should hit Netflix this year.

Lumberjack to Face Off Against SUPERGIRL in CBS Series

$

It's inevitable, really: with so many superheroes in film and television these days, we were bound to hit a point of no return when it comes to the ridiculousness of the villains. You might argue that people like Captain Cold and The Weather Wizard from The Flash are obscure, but feast your eyes on this: TV Line is reporting that Melissa Benoist's Kara Zor-El, the hero at the center of CBS's Supergirl TV series, is going to face off against a villain named Lumberjack in the pilot.

Despite only appearing one time in DC Comic lore, the show's version of Lumberjack will be an established villain in that universe who has gone toe-to-toe with Kara's cousin (that'd be Superman) and is sent by a mysterious unseen villain to track down the full extent of Supergirl's powers and abilities. (We have to wonder, though, if he's already faced off against Superman, why wouldn't he just assume she has the same powers he does?)

Either way, there's sure to be a large audience for this show — at least at the beginning, when most of the older people who watch CBS regularly tune in out of sheer confusion, and the geek crowd tunes in out of pure curiosity.

Joss Whedon Doubtful He Will Direct AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

joss-whedon-on-directing-avengers-infinity-war

In case you were still wondering if there was a chance that we could see Joss Whedon come back to direct the Avengers: Infinity War films, don’t hold your breath. We’ve already heard several reports that Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: Civil War) will continue their Marvel cinematic journey to bring those two films to life. Now in an interview with Empire (vis: CBM), Whedon confirms that he will not be coming back. Avengers: Age of Ultron will be his last Marvel film… for now. Here’s what he had to say:

“I couldn't imagine doing this again. It's enormously hard, and it'd be, by then, a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it's very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life.”

He does go on to say that he wants to remain a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some capacity. So maybe one day he’ll come back to do something else. I’d be fine with him coming back to direct any kind of Marvel film. There’s no point in limiting him to The Avengers. I do hope that he comes back to direct another Marvel movie someday, though. I hope the same thing for Jon Favreau!

SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE Is Raunchy Fun - Sundance 2015 Review

sleeping-with-other-people-is-raunchy-fun-sundance-2015-review

Sleeping With Other People is a comedy that hits all aspects of a raunchy fun emotional rollercoaster. This film allowed me to take my first breath of fresh air since the Sundance Film Festival began. Having been either depressed or disappointed by the previous films I watched, I really needed something to give me a boost and raise my spirits. Brilliant humor and perfectly timed comedy mixed with some very serious overtones all made for a very captivating and original comedy. To put it lightly; this is one brilliant romantic comedy.

Director and screenwriter Leslye Headland (Bachelorette) stepped it up this year and brought Sundance the best romcom of 2015, proclaiming it on stage after its premiere as, “When Harry met Sally, with assholes.” Yes, this was a unique take on When Harry Met Sally, but you can go ahead and drop the “with assholes.” I counted only one. Other than that one person, all the characters in the film were actually very personable and likable.

Years after losing their virginity to each other in college, Lainey (Alison Brie), a woman who is enduring a love fixation with an asshole by the name of Matthew Sobvechik (Adam Scott), and Jake (Jason Sudeikis), a “late bloomer” dealing with the difficulty of contemporary dating and seemingly allergic to monogamy as a result, randomly cross paths in a support group. With obvious sparks flying between them, they agree to a platonic friendship and in doing so, team up to support each other as they freely sleep with other people.

Brie and Sudeikis have amazing chemistry in the film. Brie has quickly jumped up to the top of my list of favorite ladies in Hollywood and crushes it in the role of Lainey. She successfully rises to the challenge of playing both a comedic character and a person battling her love addiction to an unattainable douchebag. Sudeikis was hilarious through the entire film, delivering snappy comedy like he had been doing it for years now… oh, right. I hope that Scott is given good credit for his role in this film. I think he’s been great in just about everything that he is in. He far surpasses the common role of being a dick by adding a massive amount of flat-out creepy.

If you have ever enjoyed any movies or tv series that any of these actors have been in, you will like this movie. Headland has brought all the elements for this awesome raunch-romcom. It will leave you laughing your ass off and feeling a bit uncomfortable, and maybe you’ll even learn a little something. It’s a no-brainer that Sleeping With Other People will be wide released, so go see it when it comes out. I’d recommend it.

Snickers released a great Super Bowl commercial that is set in the classic TV series The Brady Bunch, only it features an ax-wielding Danny Trejo in the place of Marcia and Steve Buscemi in the place of Jan. The two actors were edited into a scene with Mike (Robert Reed) and Carol Brady (Florence Henderson).

The commercial makes reference to two classic scenes from show. The first one is when Marcia had her nose broken by a football before a big date, and the other is when a frustrated Jan screams, “Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!” It's a pretty funny and entertaining commercial.

I also included a video showing the process of creating the commercial.

Sundance ‘15 Review: Saoirse Ronan in STOCKHOLM, PENNSYLVANIA

$
0

There’s always been something disturbing to me about the Back to the Future trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, they are among my favorite films of all time, and they influenced much of my childhood. The problem that has long weighed on my mind, however, is that even though Marty’s changes to the past made his family members more successful, healthy, and/or outgoing, he returns to a life, a reality, that isn’t his. On the surface, he’s in a better situation than his former life, and obviously a way better place than the dark timeline Biff creates in BTTF: Part II. But even though those people are indeed his family, he no longer shares any memories with them. Other than names and faces, those people are strangers to him. With that simple shift in perspective, if we continued following Marty’s story, I believe it would eventually turn dark; it would be bleak; it would be pretty damn interesting.

Stockholm, Pennsylvania springs from that same idea of picking up where most stories end. Writer-director Nikole Beckwith’s drama starts where the usual abduction thriller leaves off — the moment when the victim is returned home. In this case, though, the victim, Leanne (Saoirse Ronan), has been in captivity most of her life. Renamed “Leia” by her captor, Ben (Jason Isaacs), and raised with no formal education and under the belief that the outside world had been destroyed, she is returned "home" to her mother (Cynthia Nixon) and father (David Warshofsky), whom she doesn’t remember, and is reintroduced to a world she knows even less about.

As Leanne’s mother, who resorts to using increasingly unsettling methods to try and reconnect with her daughter, Nixon gives the most compelling and layered performance of her career. On the other hand, Ronan’s wide range is relegated to a character who doesn’t have much light shed on her inner struggles, forcing the actress to work within the subtle shades of a young woman who comes off, frankly, as robotic.

It’s admirable that Beckwith took on such heavy subject matter for her feature debut, exploring the devastating and long reaching damage of child abduction and the difficulty of attempting to reacclimatize a victim to normal life. Unfortunately, the movie’s unique premise is at times its greatest hinderance. With Leanne’s captor behind bars, the movie lacks the suspense and subsequent relief that would have been inherent in the usual kidnapping movie. Again, there are many interesting places you can take that, but here the drama is way too drawn-out, and is often more frustrating than fascinating, making it feel much, much longer than its 100 minute runtime.

The director does show some flair in the way she stages flashbacks to Leanne being raised by Ben. But the stark reality she builds throughout the film is shattered by an ending that will no doubt stir up conversation — with some sure to appreciate its haunting sentiment — but that ultimately feels inauthentic to the rest of the movie.

“I’m not saying that I’ve been everywhere and I’ve done everything, but I do know it’s a pretty amazing planet we live on here…”

Ya gotta love good ol' Jack Burton (Kurt Russell). Funko has released a line of Pop! collectible figures featuring the characters from John Carpenter’s classic 1986 action comedy Big Trouble in Little China. The characters included in the series are Jack, Gracie Law, the villain Lo Pan, and his three Storm henchmen — Rain, Thunder, and Lightning.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was growing up. I watched it a ridiculous number of times when I was kid. It might be time to show to my own kids and see how they like it!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Origin Film Is Moving Forward

night-of-the-living-dead-origins-film-is-moving-forward

The son of director George Romero, Cameron Romero, is moving forward with his Night of the Living Dead origin film, which is apparently simply being called Origins.

The original Night of the Living Dead movie was released back in 1968, and the story follows seven people trapped in a rural farmhouse attacked by zombies. It was made on a budget of $140,000 and made over $30 million world wide. It’s a cult classic, and it spawned the zombie film genre.

The story for the origin film was developed by Cameron Romero, who is also set to direct from a screenplay he wrote with Darrin Reed and Bryce C. Campbell

The project is set at the height of the Cold War, when one scientist tried to give the world its best hope for survival and instead unleashed its worst nightmare.

Radar Pictures has come on board to produce the film after Romero launched a crowdfunding campaign back in October and raised over $30,000 for pre-production costs. Romero had this to say in a statement:

“Origins is a great opportunity for me to continue the family tradition of creating haunting and ever-evolving depictions of the undead, and a great opportunity for Romero fans to see a story of zombie inception never portrayed before.”

Hopefully he has the talent to bring the fans a film that they’ll enjoy. Production is set to start later this year. I think an origin story is an interesting way to go. I like that they are going with the Cold War setting. It will be fun to see a period zombie flick like this. I always like it when filmmakers decide to go retro.

Another cliché phrase on the silver screen exposed. This week’s video brings us, “It’s not what it looks like”. This phrase is mostly used in compromising situations, being awkward, funny or just plain weird.

The video is NSFW. A full list of the films, in order of appearance, can be found in the video’s description on YouTube.

Not long ago we posted some photo scans of some images from Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. We now have high resolution versions of those same images, and they definitely look a lot better. Some of the images feature scenes from the film, while others show Whedon directing his actors. I’m kind of sad that Whedon won't be back to direct the next couple of Avengers movies, but it’s exciting to know that we’ll get to see an original project from him in the near future.

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released on May 1st, 2015.

We've got another spectacular piece of comic book cover art for Star Wars #1 created by artist Greg Horn. He also created another awesome variant piece featuring Luke Skywalker that you can see here. The art was posted on his Facebook page with a description and praise of another new color that he has created, much like the Attack on Titan art that he released last year. Here's an explanation about the color.

Greg Horn has done it again. Following up on his astounding invention of a never-before-seen color early in 2014, the superstar artist one-ups himself, revealing an entirely new chromatic range of hues in his new Darth Vader #1 cover for Marvel Comics. The new tints and tones are collectively called Pewvers, reproducing what the artist says is “all the colors between pewter and silver”. Physicist Edward Reich comments, “Mr. Horn’s achievements are simply unexplainable to modern science…to invent one color, I suppose it’s possible. But, an entire spectrum of colors? It makes me want to cut open his head just to see what’s inside”. His exploits baffle scientists and non-smart people alike, leading some people to believe he is magic. Alternative medicine guru Jimmy Rohrbaugh exclaims, “Pewvers are like a wave of pure artistic energy that can trigger latent healing abilities in the human mind. Many of my clients say that just looking at the Darth Vader painting has cured them of all variety of ailments... one guy had goiters, trench foot, and the mange—next day, all gone.”
