Jimmy Olsen Cast in SUPERGIRL Series

jimmy-olsen-cast-in-supergirl-series

CBS has cast Necessary Roughness actor Mehcad Brooks to co-star alongside Glee's Melissa Benoist in their adaptation of DC Comics' Supergirl. He will be taking on the role of Jimmy Olsen, and he doesn't look like the bumbling, nerdy kid we all imagined he'd be. This guy looks like he could easily sweep any girl off their feet, and he also looks like he could kick some ass if he needed to.

THR reports that in the series, Olsen is a photographer at CatCo., which is where Kara works as well. He's described as being "the salt of the earth [which] only makes Kara crush on him even more." The report goes on to say that "the character has recently been living and working in National City though the reason is still a secret. As Kara emerges as Supergirl they grow closer."

I don't recall Olsen and Supergirl ever having a thing for each other. That should make for an interesting dynamic. I'm looking forward to seeing how this series turns out. I love what I've seen with Green Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham. This has the potential to be just as good.

The hour-long drama centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist), Superman's cousin, who "was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. After arriving on Earth, she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who taught her to be careful with her superpowers."

Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She's still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn't know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she's even given a new moniker: Supergirl.

Arrow and The Flash's Greg Berlanti is writing the script with Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and they will executive produce the drama for Warner Bros. Television.

Why PARASYTE: THE MAXIM Should Be The Next Great Anime On Your List

$

Let me start off by saying (because some elitist in the Facebook comments who won't read this post probably will) that the Parasyte series has long existed in Japanese pop culture. It began as a Manga way back in 1988 and enjoyed a seven year run before discontinuing in 1995. Recently, the series experienced a resurgence in the form of two live action films, and this amazing anime series.

If You Like Attack On Titan...This Blows That Away.

Simply put, Parasyte is about an invasion. Small wormlike creatures are invading human bodies and controlling their brains to feast on other humans for sustenance. This invasion is widely unrecognized by the human race until one teenage boy, Shinichi Izumi, ties a tourniquet around his arm to prevent an invading creature from getting to his brain. This forces the being to mature within his arm and become sentient. Migi, as he is called, is unable to explain his or others existence, and thereby enters a partnership with Shinichi to ensure their own survival.

What unfolds after is a slow revelation of the invasion of Japan as miscellaneous gruesome murders occur around the nation. Shinichi and Migi explore these situations to find more information about what's happening to them and why the "Parasites" are invading. This leads to some dark moments, high flying action, and some really interesting concepts.

Almost everything about this show is awesome, but what particularly drew me in is the interesting dynamic between the Parasites and the humans. Shinichi and Migi are bound to the same body, but Migi is quick to announce they are not friends. Protecting Shinichi is mere self-interest for Migi as he does not wish to die, and his constant regret at being unable to control Shinichi's brain is hilarious.

The other Parasites are just as interesting, as most are legitimately confused as to why humankind dislikes them. In their reasoning, humans are animals, and animals eat other animals, so why do people see their killing as strange? They also have this intelligence about them that is lacking from most zombie-like invasion shows that I can really appreciate. I much prefer my cold-hearted super killing machine aliens to have a brain, I'm learning.

Another awesome strength of this show is the action sequences. The bad Parasites typically attack through the use of the human head, which unravels into a muscled mass of tentacles and razor sharp knives. At first, I thought the concept was a direct lift from the Parasites found in the Resident Evil games, but after seeing the history of the series it's more correct to say Resident Evil stole from this series.

(Ignore the bad dub...this video is to give you a taste of the action...but it is far from the coolest scene. I just don't want to spoil things for you.)

The character development over the course of 15 episodes has been awesome as well, I might add. Shinichi from the episode shown above to now has done a complete 180, and the things he was concerned about then aren't even close to what he's worried about now. While it's not uncommon in anime, there are a few shows who fall into the "character who stays the same throughout the whole series" trap, and that can really bring you out of things. This show feels like real people experiencing something otherworldly, and I absolutely love it.

The series is still running so I implore you to catch up (should only take five hours) and get on the hype train before the bandwagon attaches! Oh! I completely forgot to mention that the intro and outro music is completely awesome, which always elevates an anime in my mind.

You're still here? After how much I built this up? GO WATCH IT, YA DINGUS, AND POST YOUR OPINIONS!

Arnold Schwarzenegger has released a new badass promo photo of himself as an aged, battered, and scarred T-800 from Terminator Genisys. We are going to see a new trailer for this highly anticipated sci-fi action film during the Super Bowl this weekend, so stay tuned for that awesomeness! Hopefully it's loaded with new footage. Like many of you, I'm a huge fan of this franchise, and I truly hope this movie gives the fans a story they will love.

The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

The movie also stars Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Emilia Clarke, Matt Smith, Byung-hun Lee, Courtney B. Vance, and J.K. SimmonsTerminator: Genisys is set to be released on July 1st.

THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT Was Freakin' Jacked-Up - Sundance 2015 Review

$
0
0

The Stanford Prison Experiment might be the most jacked-up movie that I've seen at Sundance this year. The thing that makes the film so compelling and disturbing is the fact that it's based on a true story. I wasn't aware that this ever happened, but it did, and it was pretty messed up.

The story is set in 1971, when a Stanford psychology professor named Dr. Philip Zimbardo puts together a prison experiment in which he recruits a group of young students to study the psychology of imprisonment. With the flip of a coin the professor decides which of the students will be prison guards, and which ones will be inmates. In the process we see how these people react and adapt to this situation. When you first meet everyone, they all seem like nice guys who would never really do anything too crazy — they seem like they all have good heads on their shoulders. Things take a very unexpected turn, though. The guards start to abuse their authority, and the prisoners are sadistically put through hell. It is fascinating to see how they treat each other, and things get insanely intense.

All the while, the professor and his study group are watching the madness unfold, and they are even encouraging it in a way. So not only are we watching how the students react to the study, but the reactions and thought processes of the people running it are equally fascinating. It is crazy how far they actually let the experiment to go before they stop it. It was supposed to last two weeks, but they end it on day six because of how scary things get. They shouldn't have let it go as far as they did, though. It is frightening to see how fast it escalated. At the end of the first day, prisoners were ready to break.

The movie has an incredible cast of actors, and everyone in it gives solid performances. The amazing ensemble cast includes Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Michael Angarano, Tye Sheridan, Johnny Simmons, and Olivia Thirlby.

In a way, the movie made me fear the society that we live in. It just goes to prove that people who are given power are most likely going to abuse it and use it to control people in ways that are unethical. This goes from small business managers all the way up to the high powers of government. I know not everyone abuses the power they are given like this, but you never know what to expect. In the experiment, everyone that came into the project were asked if they wanted to be a guard or a prisoner, and everyone chose prisoner. Yet almost everyone that was chosen to be a guard became violent and incredibly abusive.

It just goes to show you really have to be careful about the people you choose to put in leadership positions. Once they get a taste of what power is like, it could go their heads, and things could go badly. I've seen this happen with people I've worked with in my own life.

This is an incredible film, definitely one of the best that I've seen at Sundance. If the movie is ever released in theaters, it's one you have to go see! Here's the description:

It is the summer of 1971. Dr. Philip Zimbardo launches a study on the psychology of imprisonment. Twenty-four male undergraduates are randomly assigned to be either a guard or a prisoner. Set in a simulated jail, the project unfolds. The participants rapidly embody their roles—the guards become power-hungry and sadistic, while the prisoners, subject to degradation, strategize as underdogs. It soon becomes clear that, as Zimbardo and team monitor the escalation of action through surveillance cameras, they are not fully aware of how they, too, have become part of the experiment.

Based on the real-life research of Dr. Zimbardo (who was a consultant on the film), The Stanford Prison Experiment is a dramatic period piece that remains relevant over 40 years later. Along with an impressive cast, including Billy Crudup as Zimbardo, Kyle Patrick Alvarez (C.O.G., 2013 Sundance Film Festival) delivers an intense, visceral film about the role of power that plays to both chilling and exhilarating effect

Super Bowl TV Spot for TERMINATOR GENISYS Arrives Early

He's back. Following this morning's release of a new photo for Paramount's Terminator Genisys, the studio has debuted its Super Bowl TV spot a few days early. It contains a bunch of new footage and teases the face-off between two Arnold Schwarzenegger T-800s that we wrote about yesterday. I really want to like this movie, but even after seeing this footage, I'm still not quite convinced. I wish I was more excited right now, but I'd love to be surprised at how great it is when I walk out of the theater after seeing it. Here's hoping director Alan Taylor can craft something better than that awful Thor sequel with this one.

Terminator Genisys arrives in theaters on July 1st.

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future…

I recently had an opportunity to play the Star Wars arcade game released in 1983. Its line-rendered 3D graphics were impressive, but the gameplay was pretty limited...oh how times have changed. Last year Lucasfilm and Bandai Namco announced Star Wars: Battle Pod, which would have an immersive pod shaped screen, rumble seat, blowing air, and surround sound. If you haven't seen the trailer, you can check it out here.

Recently released on the Star Wars YouTube channel is a video titled "From Concept to Cockpit," that shows the development of the arcade cabinet. I've got a Dave and Buster's near me that I need to checkout to see if Star Wars: Battle Pod is there. I did some searches to see if there is a list of locations with the game, but have yet to find one to share.

Ted Goes to Court in First Trailer for TED 2

Universal has released the first trailer for Ted 2, the sequel to the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all time. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane returns as co-writer, director, and mo-cap star of the film as Ted the bear, and Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman, and more join him in live action.

Looks like Ted is heading to court this time around to prove that he's actually human, and like the first film as a whole, this trailer is pretty hit-or-miss for me. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Here's Why THE HOBBIT Films Suck in Comparison to THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Sean Hickey, a student and member of the Dublin Business School's Film Society, has a new video essay which brilliantly lays out all of the reasons why Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy is a complete joke when compared with The Lord of the Rings films. And it's not just the typical complaints, either: he barely touches on the fact that they stretched this story into three movies, spending much more time diving into direct comparisons between the two trilogies and showing why The Lord of the Rings is superior in every way when it comes to basic storytelling. This just became my go-to video to send to anyone who tries to argue that The Hobbit films are solid, because I honestly don't know how you can watch this and still believe that those movies are anything other than pale imitations of what came before it. Is Martin Freeman a great Bilbo? Absolutely. But are these movies legitimately good? No freakin' way.

Sundance ‘15 Review: Jared Hess’ DON VERDEAN

$
0
0

For Don Verdean, director Jared Hess reunites with Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement, who both starred in Gentlemen Broncos, Hess’ last feature length effort which was not released nationally due to the abysmal critical reception it received. In the review I wrote for Broncos back in 2009, like many other critics, I cited that the film’s use of feces and vomit would likely turn audiences off, unaware that complaints like mine would end up turning the powers that be off to running the film nationally at all. While I liked it more than most, looking back, the director did abandon quality storytelling for gross out humor and often overwhelming quirkiness. Hess dials back the zaniness in Don Verdean without losing his signature touches and provides a better stage for Rockwell and Clement, who gave great comedic performances in their last outing with the director but didn’t actually share any screen time.

Rockwell portrays the title character, Don Verdean, an archaeologist who spent years travelling the world in search of biblical artifacts that back up events depicted in The Bible. The story picks up a decade after the height of his fame, when the worn-down Verdean now travels around the US in his RV with his assistant, Carol (Amy Ryan), speaking to small crowds, peddling his old books and DVDs, and leaving any excavating to his contacts in Israel, Boaz (Clement) and Shem (Stelios Xanthos). Verdean gets the opportunity to once again chase after relics himself when an evangelical preacher named Tony Lazarus (Danny McBride), desperate to bring back followers to his dwindling congregation, offers to fund Verdean's operation. While the legitimacy of Verdean’s finds has always been uncertain, his latest discovery (a misshapen pillar of salt purported to be the remains of Lot’s wife) brings increased pressure from Lazarus to seek more significant artifacts and brings intense scrutiny from Lazarus’ rival — former satanist turned christian preacher, Pastor Fontaine (Will Forte). With his reputation, funding, and the very faith of believers on the line, Verdean takes desperate measures that lead him and his team down a slippery path.

While I don’t want to undersell the wonderful supporting cast, which along with Ryan, McBride, and Forte, also includes Leslie Bibb, who is a riot as Lazarus’ wife, the movie belongs to Rockwell and Clement. Even when the two characters are just on the phone with each other, with Clement speaking in bizarre Borat-esque accent, the back-and-forth between the two actors is uproarious. And when the characters begin working side by side, digging deeper problems for each other, the film really takes off, delivering a hilarious satire that riffs on religion and redemption.

If Jared Hess is seeking his own redemption for Gentlemen Broncos and his quickly cancelled Napoleon Dynamite animated series, I believe he has a good chance to earn it with Don Verdean. Is it an instant classic like his debut, Napoleon Dynamite, or as quotable as his follow up, Nacho Libre? No, not really — but time/repeat viewings could prove me wrong. What is clear, though, is Jared and his wife/writing partner Jerusha Hess still have a knack for creating memorable characters that are a joy to root for, even when those characters make horrible, horrible decisions. In fact, I am still very much rooting for this husband and wife movie making team, even if they too have made a couple of missteps along the way.

Elizabeth Olsen Talks Scarlet Witch's Origin in AGE OF ULTRON, Possible Romance with Vision, and More

$

0

If you aren't familiar with the work of Elizabeth Olsen, I'd highly recommend checking out Martha Marcy May Marlene. The young actress wasn't really given much to do in last year's Godzilla, but she's immensely talented, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what Joss Whedon - a writer known for crafting solid female roles - does with her Scarlet Witch character in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Olsen was recently interviewed by Empire (via CBM), and she spoke a bit about her character and what we can expect to see in the highly-anticipated blockbuster.

"The coolest thing about Scarlet Witch is, because you've never seen her, we got to create how she moves. Joss was really inspired by dancers, and so he knew that he wanted to change visually how she moves, to be more like a dancer than a fighter. I didn't really have to do much stunt training. Instead I trained with a dancer, Jenny White, which was its own kid of soreness, but it wasn't what I thought it would be."

Not too surprising, especially considering the work Summer Glau did as the lithe, dangerous River Tam in Whedon's Firefly and Serenity. Sounds like we could be dealing with another character who's a bit mentally shaken, but who can handle herself just fine in battle. Olsen continued:

"Age of Ultron is almost [Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's] origin story, so we don't have one of those montages where heroes learn all of their powers in five minutes. We are still discovering the things we can and cannot do. The extent of her powers isn't fully explored in Ultron. But she can manipulate objects. And she has visions, and she has the ability to share them."

Whedon certainly has a lot of ground to cover and a ton of characters that factor into Age of Ultron, so it's probably best that we don't have long stretches of exposition explaining who these new characters are and what we can do. Having the audience learn alongside them definitely seems like a more economical way to tell the story. But what about Scarlet Witch's motivations? Why is she fighting alongside Ultron in the trailers?

"Obviously there are plenty of countries in the world that hate America, for whatever history and pain they believe it has caused their own country and their own lives. That is the world we have created for Wanda and Pietro to have been brought up in. What you're told a lot of times growing up is that, that country, those people, their way of living is the reason why we have been bombed. [The Avengers] are the worst evil in Wanda and Pietro's mind, not this guy who hasn't done anything yet."

That's an interesting outlook, and I wonder how much of that was created just for backstory purposes and how much of it will actually shine through in the movie. The story is definitely taking on more of a global slant by bringing Wakanda into the fold, and we already know that the scope of this film is absolutely huge. Should be fun to see what Whedon does with a larger palette to work with.

And finally, in the comics, Scarlet Witch and Vision have a romantic relationship. When asked whether or not that relationship would come to fruition in the movie, Olsen responded:

"[Laughs] I don't know what you're talking about..."

She's playing coy here, but I think it'll likely turn out to be true, if only to add higher stakes and more drama to the narrative. If the characters are well-written, then we'll only become even more interested if there's a romance angle introduced between two characters, and given Whedon's propensity for killing off characters, it could add even more tension to what's shaping up to be a hell of a movie.

Avengers: Age of Ultron arrives in theaters on May 1st.

We've featured Irina Ushenina aka Rei-Doll's cosplay on GeekTyrant a few times, most notably in the Catwoman Best of Cosplay Collection. Despite five films with the "not nude" blue design, when I think of the character Mystique I always envision the comic design with the white dress, long white gloves, and long white boots.

Ushenina brilliantly uses a skin tight under-suit to side step the issue of blue body paint ruining a white costume. With a perfectly matched face makeup color the whole thing feel seamless. Great cosplay photos like these are no accident and in this case took a whole team to pull off, namely, photographer Kifir, Ryoko, PredatoR, Paula, Daniel and Mario.

JOHN WICK Directors Could Helm Chris Pratt's COWBOY NINJA VIKING

$

Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt may be an early favorite for Disney's revival of Indiana Jones, but before he (possibly) dons the fedora of the world's most famous archaeologist, Pratt will suit up in the film adaptation of the comic book Cowboy Ninja Viking. That project was left without a director when Marc Forster (World War Z) left, but now Variety reports that John Wick directors David Leitch and Chat Stahelski are in early talks to replace him.

The story, based on the comic written by A.J. Lieberman with art by Riley Rossmo, follows a man with schizophrenia who is part of a government program to turn schizophrenics into assassins. Pratt will play Duncan, who has the personalities and skill sets of a cowboy, a ninja, and a viking, and his attempt to hunt down the billionaire who began the program.

Pratt, who has apparently earned enough clout that he has final say on who will direct this movie, reportedly met with Leitch and Stahelski and liked them enough to give his stamp of approval. John Wick was pretty great (though I will admit to it becoming a little repetitive after a while), and I'm excited to see if these directors can bring that same frenetic pacing and energy to a project that sounds perfectly tailored to their interests.
