Edgar Wright Not Credited as Screenwriter on ANT-MAN

edgar-wright-not-credited-as-screenwriter-on-ant-man

Yesterday, Disney released the Ant-Man teaser trailer, and along with it came an official press release. That press release interestingly states that the screenplay credit only went to Adam McKay and Paul Rudd. Edgar Wright's name is not listed. Instead he and and Joe Cornish will receive a "story by" credit, and Wright is also named as an executive producer. So it's not like he's been completely pushed out. After all, he did spend eight years of his life developing the movie. A couple of months ago, McKay revealed that he and Rudd worked on the rewrite together. When talking about the script he said:

"I was really proud of what we did, I really thought we put some amazing stuff in there and built on an already strong script from Edgar Wright and sort of just enhanced some stuff.
"We just shaped the whole thing, we just tried to streamline it, make it cleaner, make it a little bigger, a little more aggressive, make it funnier in places... Edgar had a really good script. But we just had a blast, and Rudd was just so much fun to write with."

McKay and Rudd must have must have given the script a pretty good overhaul to knock Wright off the screenwriting credit. Even though it would have been great to see what Wright's vision of Ant-Man would be, the movie still looks like it's going to be great. We only got a little tease of what's in store for us, but it packed quite a punch. I'm excited to see more of what the film has to offer. What are your thoughts on Wright not being credited as a screenwriter?

Watch This Supercut of Annapurna Pictures' Films From 2012-Today

Is there a single person who has done more for the film industry in the past few years than Megan Ellison? I don't think so. The 28-year-old founder of Annapurna Pictures has produced some of the best movies of the decade so far, and she's become a beacon of light in an often-depressing cinematic landscape: she actually seems to value and cherish the opinions and talent of auteurs ranging from Paul Thomas Anderson to Spike Jonze, Kathryn Bigelow to David O. Russell, and more. The Playlist points us to this excellent supercut featuring many of the movies she's ushered to the big screen in the past three years, including Her, Zero Dark Thirty, Lawless, American Hustle, and The Master, just to name a few. Thankfully, Ellison seems like she's just getting started, and fans of cinema should be very happy about that. We may need her now more than ever.

New Set Photos From SPECTRE Show James Bond in the Snow

Spectre Poster.jpg

My wife and I are currently watching all of the James Bond films in order. We timed it out so that we're watching one per month so we'll be completely caught up when the newest film, Spectre, arrives in theaters on November 6th this year. As we've checked off a lot of the older movies (we're watching Octopussy this month), it's become clear to me that while I used to think my favorite Bond was Sean Connery, I'm starting to think that current 007 Daniel Craig might actually rank as my favorite actor to play the character. I loved Skyfall, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the story continues in Spectre (and I'm excited about the producers finally having the rights to include that organization in a Bond film once again).

In addition to the photo at the top of this article (taken a couple of days ago), Sony Pictures has released some brand new set photos of the cast on location in Sölden, Austria, including looks at Craig, Léa Seydoux, and Dave Bautista, and it looks like things are pretty chilly up there. The fact that they're on the Austrian slopes makes me wonder if they're going to have another ski chase sequence or another cable car sequence updated for the 21st century, because one thing I've learned watching all of these Bond films so close together is that this franchise loves to repeat itself when it comes to set pieces. For a primer on the SPECTRE organization, click here. Take a look at the pics below, and let us know if you're looking forward to Spectre in the comments!

GRAND THEFT AUTO V Reimagined As '70s Horror Film

Have you ever seen Christine? It's the horror movie based on a Stephen King novel in which a car is possessed by supernatural forces and starts killing people. Well apparently there was a much less famous film called The Car that came out in 1977 that appears to be a precursor to Christine, with the same kind of "car comes to life and kills people" concept.

A YouTube user named Gingerbrick put a team together to recreate the trailer for The Car using Grand Theft Auto V, and the result is pretty funny. I'm a fan of these kinds of reinterpretations using video game engines, and I love to see the diversity and creativity of different users making their own versions of things in video game form. What do you think about this one?

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Talk About Writing THE LEGO MOVIE 2

$

The LEGO Movie was one of my favorite films of 2014, so I was thrilled to hear that writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller would be returning to write the upcoming sequel. In a new interview with Empire, the filmmakers - who are producing all of the upcoming LEGO movie projects - spoke about the full slate of brick-based movies ranging from Ninjago to The LEGO Batman Movie (starring Will Arnett) and offered some thoughts on what they'd like to do with the sequel to 2014's smash hit.

On whether they'll direct The LEGO Movie 2:

Miller: "I don’t think so. We’re writing the sequel right now and obviously producing all the other ones. There’s a challenge to make each one feel like its own thing. Part of the fun is finding people like Charlie [Bean], who’s doing the Ninjago movie, and Chris McKay who did so much on the first film. Each of them have their own distinct voices and ideas for tone. So it will each have its own personality and not just be, ‘Hey, remember that last movie? Here’s another one just like it!” So that’s been a big challenge but so far it’s been going better than I expected."
Lord: "I think it’s nice for all these other films to have their own voice and that’s what’s neat about working with all these other filmmakers. They come up with solutions you wouldn’t think of. Watching Charlie Bean’s sequences for Ninjago is so gratifying because he’s able to make it play without any dialogue and has a really great visual style. It’s really nice and refreshing. I think it would get boring if we directed them all, quite honestly."

The pair wasn't originally going to write the sequel, so what changed?

Miller: "We thought we’d said everything we wanted to say about creativity and imagination and the inherent nature of Lego, and that left-brain/right-brain nature. So we were scared about trying to write something that felt like the next chapter and new ideas and not just a rehash."
Lord: "We also worried we didn’t have enough time. Luckily, [Chris] McKay and Jared [Stern] and Michelle [Morgan] all worked on the movie a bit in our absence and really cracked the beginnings of a story and got us really excited; excited enough to write it. We should be writing right now. We’ve opened a Final Draft document and titled it. I mean, that’s really the hardest part. And we’ve chosen the formatting. That is all that’s happened so far. We’ve been outlining a bunch."
Miller: "There are some really fun new themes that we didn’t explore in the first movie and got us really excited, so that it’s its own thing. With 22 Jump Street we did the whole making fun of yourself for just doing the same thing again. We can’t do that ever again. You can only go so far up your own rear end."

And what can we expect to see in the story for The LEGO Movie 2?

Miller: "Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view?

In addition to all of that, Warner Bros. Pictures has just released a brand new featurette called "Creating the Bricks" as a way to promote The LEGO Movie and likely raise some more awareness for the project in hopes of scoring an Oscar nomination (and potential win). Check that out below!

12 1980s Toys You Might Not Remember

$

Not long ago, I put together a list of 15 toys from the 1990s that you may have forgotten about. I decided to go back in time a little further and find some from the 1980s that you may not remember or maybe never even heard of. I grew up in the '80s and some of my favorite toys consisted of G.I. Joe, He-Man, Transformers, and more. You can read through 12 of my favorites right here. While I was doing some research on these toys, there were some things that I completely forgot about! It was so great to be able to unlock some of those memories that I hadn't thought about in years. It was seriously like going back in time, and now I want to buy back my childhood in the form of toys!

Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future

I completely forgot that this ever existed, but I freakin’ loved playing with this thing as a kid. The toy line was not only based on an animated series, but the toys Mattel developed also interacted with a segment of the episodes that included visual and audio material. You basically held your spaceship in front of the TV and fired at it with light lasers. You could also shoot the guns on the toys at each other to make the pilot pop out. I included a gloriously radical commercial for each of the toys listed.

Zap It

These were basically squirt guns that resembled an Uzi. These things would probably get you shot in the streets these days if kids were carrying them around. The twist was that the gun shot out a disappearing ink. It was a fun toy to play with…until you ran out of the disappearing ink ammo, which happened pretty fast. After that it was just a regular squirt gun. Sure, they had refills...but who ever actually went out and bought the refills? Not me!

Super Naturals

I don’t know why, but I had a crazy amount of fun playing with these action figures. I imagine it was the horror aspect of them that appealed to me. The thing that set these apart from other toys was that they had 3D holograms. The figure's chest and head holograms would change between images as your viewing angle changed. The shields also had holograms on them, and their weapons were glow in the dark. There were two different factions of ghostly warriors: one was lead by the heroic Lionheart, the other was lead by the evil Skull.

Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light

These figures were based on an animated series that I have no recollection of, but I must have watched it, because I had a few of the figures. (The toys were actually developed and released after the animated series ended.) They each had hologram stickers on both their chests and staffs. The toy line only lasted one year, and included twelve figures featuring male Spectral Knights and Darkling Lords. There were also four vehicles produced. A second series of figures was supposed to be released in 1988, but the line was discontinued and never produced. I’m surprised the first series of toys was released in the first place, considering it happened after the show ended.

Army Ants

It’s so weird for me to look back at my childhood and realize that I had a full collection of Army Ants. They seem like such a silly toy now, but when I was a kid, I thought they were the coolest thing. The figures were released in squadron sets, and came in a pack of three or eight figures. The ant soldiers had various ranks, including officers, international soldiers such as French Foreign Legion soldiers and English guards, and aviators. The Army Ants were organized into two opposing armies, which included an Orange Army led by General Patant and a Blue Army led by General Mc-Anther.

Battle Beasts

These just make me laugh, especially after I watched the commercial. This is another collection of action figures that I played with a lot. The figures were only about 2" tall, and they came in the form of an anthropomorphized animals with body armor and a weapon. Most of the figures had their left hand replaced by a weapon of some kind.

StarCom

This is one of those toy lines that preceded the development of the cartoon series. I had a few of these toys, but not a ton of them. One of the things that made it stand out was that it used “Magna Lock” technology, which basically included magnets embedded into the figures' feet so that they could stand on their vehicles and playsets without falling off. The complete series of Starcom toys offered 23 figures, 6 playsets, and 13 vehicles on the heroic Starcom side, while the villainous Shadow Force was represented by 15 action figures and 11 vehicles.

Centurions

This is another one of those action figure lines that completely slipped my mind, but I played with them all the time. Good grief, I had a lot of freakin’ toys growing up. The toys were based on an animated series that I had a blast watching as well. Comic book legends Jack Kirby and Gil Kane contributed to the design and concepts of the show, which featured three heroes wearing exo-frame suits battling the forces of evil. There were holes in in the body of the figures where you could embed armor, weapons, and even vehicles, and I remember thinking this was a pretty cool and inventive toy line.

Sky Commanders

Hell yeah, I had Sky Commander toys! What’s funny about this is that I enjoyed playing with the toys, but I never liked the animated series it was based on. There’s a reason it never went past one season. You would play with these toys with ziplines that came along with them. I remember clamping strings all over my room and in the back yard to play with these things. It probably wasn’t the safest toy to be playing with though, especially with all of the trip lines the kids just set up anywhere they could. I will say I didn’t like how much work it took to set up, and then cleaning it all up afterwards was always a hassle.

Ring Raiders

Yeah, this was was probably one of the dumbest toy lines to come out of the '80s. I was never interested in these Ring Raiders toys. I don’t know why, but I just didn't like the fact that I had to wear a ring to play with my toys. They consisted of small plastic toy airplanes that were mounted on plastic rings. Apparently there were only a few molds that were produced for the toy line, so most of the aircraft were repainted three or four times each. The line was short-lived, and only lasted for about six months.

Big Trak

I don’t know anyone who had this toy. In fact, I had never heard of it until I started doing research for this article. It was a programmable electric vehicle resembling a futuristic-looking tank and utility vehicle that might have been used on a moon or Mars-type environment. Apparently the toy could remember up to 16 commands, which it would then perform in sequence. I personally think it looks like kind of a boring toy, but anyone that had it as a kid might have the complete opposite opinion because of the nostalga factor.

Chargertron

This sci-fi robot toy line had one of the greatest '80s commercials ever! Once you watch it, you won’t be able to get the amazing theme song out of your head. The line included a pair of robot cars, one called Protagatron (Red), the other named Antagatron (Blue). The toy boasts that it was always changing and rearranging, but I didn’t see much of that when I had one. Check out the official back story!

"In all Galactic lore, there is no story as tragic and hard fought as that of the Twin Princes of the Rival Moons of Planet Robotron. Each Prince was to rule his own moon, with the most successful ruler eventually becoming the new Emperor of Robotron. One of the Princes chose evil and destruction as his means to power, and set out to destroy the Good Prince, with the aid of Antagatron, a giant mutant Robot with the ability to charge up and launch a Tracker that changes to Attacker."

New Footage from AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Screened at CES

Marvel recently showed off some new footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron at CES. We've seen a good amount of footage from the film thanks to the trailers that have been released, and we have another one coming next Monday! Maybe some of the footage that was shown at CES will be included in this upcoming trailer.

Thanks to IGN, we have some details on the new footage. They say that the stuff shown focused a lot on the villain of the movie, Ultron. There was a lot of footage that we've already screened that was shown, and it was intercut with director Joss Whedon and several of the film's actors talking about the villain and how important he is to the story. As far as the new scenes go, here are a few brief descriptions:

  • “A shot of what appears to be Ultron bots bursting through the walls of the train in the slow-mo Quicksilver sequence.”
  • “Iron Man flies at the camera, leaving tumbling Ultron bots in his wake.”
  • “A third sequence showed the destruction of a Samsung-owned building.”

I can't wait to see what this slow motion sequence looks like, and how it compares to the one that we saw and loved in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The featurette they saw also included a collection of Ultron concept art, mostly in a broken state. They explain that it "really brought home the notion that the villain gets more advanced as the movie goes on."

Whedon also revealed in the video that "whenever he thought of the Avengers, he pictured them fighting Ultron, and the footage was peppered with old school Ultron imagery to bring his point home and tie this version of Ultron to his roots."

I just can't get enough of what Marvel is pumping out. As long as they keep making good quality entertaining films, I'll be there to support them. They've got a great thing going right now, and I don't think they're going to screw it up. Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1st! Stay tuned for that new trailer coming next week!

Imagine being The Incredible Hulk, but you feel self-conscious about the way your skin turns green. Or Peter Parker, ticked off that your hair is always getting messed up every time you put your Spider-Man suit on. Sure, these may be #superheroproblems, but superheroes are people, too. (Well, technically they're characters in fiction, but...you know what I mean.) If superheroes actually did walk our streets, do you think companies would create products specifically for them? I don't see why they wouldn't, especially with the way we seem to be going further and further toward the idea of a niche culture.

The people over at BeautyFlash have created an infographic of beauty products designed specifically for superheroes, and some of the products are pretty funny. Take a look below, and be sure to click here if you're interested in checking out some more infographics.

J.J. Abrams Talks About The Pressure of Fan Expectations With STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Considering that this is the first year in a decade in which a new Star Wars movie will be released, and that film will be a realization of whispers and rumors of a new trilogy that have been floating around since the original trilogy came to a close, it's safe to say that anticipation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is incredibly high. Co-writer/director J.J. Abrams is well aware of the pressure he assumed when he signed on to make this movie, and when you think about it, it's really more pressure than any one person should ever have to handle. He seems to be taking it pretty well, though, and in a new interview with MTV, Abrams spoke about the opportunity outweighing the fear, the buzz in the air during filming, and more.

Reese Witherspoon to Join Matt Damon in Alexander Payne's DOWNSIZING

$

A couple of months ago, we learned that Oscar winner Matt Damon would star in Alexander Payne's upcoming film Downsizing. Now, according to Deadline, he'll be acting opposite a fellow Oscar-winner: Reese Witherspoon. The actress is coming off of solid reviews for her performance in Wild (which could earn her another Oscar nom), and this film will re-team her with Payne for the first time since they worked together on Election back in 1999.

Downsizing is described as "a social satire in which a guy realizes he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself," so it seems like Paul Rudd's Scott Lang character in Ant-Man will have some competition in the "shrinking man" category very soon. Payne wrote the script with his Sideways and About Schmidt co-writer Jim Taylor, and shooting will get underway after Damon finishes the next Bourne film for Universal.

Looking forward to seeing what these two A-listers can do under the direction of Alexander Payne?

Michael Keaton In Talks To Join KONG: SKULL ISLAND

$

Michael Keaton has earned rave reviews for his stellar performance in 2014's Birdman, and now it would seem he's parlaying his career resurgence into a role in what could be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2017. THR reports that Keaton is in talks to join the cast of Kong: Skull Island, the King Kong spin-off film that already has Tom Hiddleston and J.K. Simmons set to star.

I'm definitely on board with Keaton joining a big blockbuster like this, but there's no word yet on what character he might play, largely because most of the film's details are still shrouded in secrecy. The script is still being worked on by Flight and Need For Speed scribe John Gatins (Godzilla writer Max Borenstein wrote the original draft), and Legendary Pictures and Universal have set a release date of March 10th, 2017. The Kings of Summer helmer Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing, and here's what little information we do have about the film thus far:

In the spirit of its worldwide blockbuster Godzilla, Legendary Pictures presents a bold new take on the mythos of another iconic beast with KONG: SKULL ISLAND, which stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers and Thor series). Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and written by John Gatins (Flight) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla), KONG: SKULL ISLAND will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline. Thomas Tull (Godzilla, The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, upcoming Warcraft) will produce and Alex Garcia (Godzilla) will executive produce. The film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D by Universal Pictures.

It’s been about a month since the midseason finale of The Flash aired, but the series returns on January 20th! So we don’t have to wait much longer to see Barry Allen in action again. But while we are waiting, we’ve got a couple of TV spots for you to watch for the tenth episode titled “Revenge of the Rogues.” It’s set to feature the return of both Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell) as well as the debut of Pied Piper (Andy Mientus). It looks like a great episode! Here’s the official description:

Leonard Snart AKA Captain Cold  returns to Central City with a new hotheaded partner in tow – Mick Rory AKA Heat Wave. The duo plan to steal a multi-million dollar painting, but Cold has another agenda while in town – to set a trap for The Flash. Snart and Mick kidnap someone close to The Flash and threaten to kill them unless The Flash shows up for a battle of fire and ice. Barry tells Joe (Jesse L. Martin) he isn’t sure he should take on Snart again after the casualties that happened the last time they fought. Meanwhile, Barry asks Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh), Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) to help him double his training efforts so he’s ready for the Reverse Flash when he returns to Central City. Iris (Candice Patton) deals with the aftermath of Barry’s confession, and Cisco makes the CCPD a new shield.

“Revenge of the Rogues” was directed by Nick Copus and written by Geoff Johns and Kai Yu Wu.

Viola Davis Talks SUICIDE SQUAD and Amanda Waller

Viola Davis was the last big actor to join director David Ayer’s big screen adaptation of DC Comic’s Suicide Squad. She is set to play Amanda Waller in the film, and in a recent interview with Nerd Report she talked about the character.

Waller is a government agent who is charged with keeping a handle on a group of supervillains-turned-operatives that consists of Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Cara Delevinge as Enchantress.

According to Davis, Waller is a person you wouldn’t want to piss off. Here’s what she had to say:

“I’m fascinated by her. I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction.
“She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”

It still kind of amazes me that WB was able to bring together such an incredible cast to be in the movie. I’m a fan of everyone involved with the project, and out of all of the DC movies going into development, this might just be the one I’m most excited about.

Suicide Squad will open on August 5th, 2016.

John Travolta Cast in AMERICAN CRIME STORY

John Travolta has joined the growing cast of Ryan Murphy’s first season of the American Crime Story anthology series. The show will focus on true crime events throughout history, and the first season will center around O.J. Simpson. It will be called American Crime Story: The People Vs. O.J. Simpson.

Travolta joins the previously cast David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, Sarah Paulson — who will portray prosecutor Marcia Clark, and Cuba Gooding Jr. — who is taking on the role of Simpson. According to Variety, Travolta will play Robert Shapiro, who was a key member of Simpson’s “Dream Team” defense team during his murder trial.

The 10-episode season “examines the O.J. Simpson trial as told from the perspective of the lawyers, and is poised to explore the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court. More significantly, it will display how a combination of prosecution confidence, defense wiliness, and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.”

The series has managed to bring together an impressive cast of actors who should all be great in the roles that they play. Murphy has a talent for bringing TV series to the screen, and I’m looking forward to seeing how his new project turns out. I’m intrigued by the idea, as crazy true crime stories interest me.

The first season is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, and production is set to begin this year in Los Angeles.

A brief but funny gag reel for Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 7 has been making the rounds on the Internet recently, and it's definitely worth a minute of your time. I wish the video was longer, because it's pretty damn amusing. It highlights a foul-mounthed Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander William T. Riker chasing people down the hallway. It has been a very long time since I've watched this series, but I think 2015 is the year to give it another run through.
