Matthew Vaughn Says People "Have Had Enough" of Dark Superhero Movies

0
0

When the man who directed X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass talks about the state of superhero movies, you know people are going to perk up and pay attention. But Matthew Vaughn's recent comments about the kind of dark superhero films perhaps best embodied by Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy may have some fans up in arms.

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via THR), Vaughn spoke about the current desire of audiences:

People want fun and escapism at the moment. Look at the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. I think [Christopher] Nolan kick-started a very dark, bleak style of superhero escapism, and I think people have had enough of it.

The idea of audiences preferring lighter films has become popular again in the wake of Guardians' massive success last year, but I don't agree with Vaughn's sweeping generalization. For me, you still have to look at these movies on a case-by-case basis. Sure, Guardians was a great summer blockbuster that had a ton of humor and heart, but look at Marvel's other 2014 release, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That movie isn't nearly as lighthearted — some may even call it "bleak," considering how it's about government corruption and the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. — but it still turned out to be a fantastic film.

As an audience, we should be open to letting filmmakers dictate the tone and style of the films they're working on, since, after all, they're the ones who are supposed to know the story they're telling better than anyone else. Creating art based solely on what's popular right this second sounds like a boring, limited way of doing things, so hopefully people don't put too much stock into Vaughn's comments. His next film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, hits theaters on February 13th.

Watch Gaston Destroy a Disney World Guest in a Push-Up Contest

Gaston is one of my favorite characters in the history of Disney movies. He's a ridiculously over-the-top chauvinist, and a really fun reversal of the "perfect Disney prince" trope. I always crack up during his scenes whenever I watch Beauty and the Beast.

While it's always fun to watch such a terrible guy meet his end, an argument can be made that it's even more fun to see him absolutely wreck someone in a push-up contest. YouTube user Blake Platt uploaded a video of a Walt Disney World guest challenging the Disney cast member portraying Gaston to a contest of strength, and though some may criticize "Gaston's" form on those first few push-ups (he's not going all the way down to the ground!), it can't be denied that what happens next is pretty humiliating for the challenger.

First Look at Natalie Portman & Joel Edgerton in JANE GOT A GUN

0
0

The upcoming western Jane Got A Gun had one of the most troubled productions I can remember for a mainstream release. Original director Lynne Ramsay never showed up to work on the first day of shooting, causing big delays and ripple effects that included Jude Law leaving the film altogether. But star Natalie Portman stuck around, Warrior director Gavin O'Connor was hired as Ramsay's replacement, and after finally replacing Law with Ewan McGregor, they all managed to pull things together and get rolling on this project.

Now Empire has some first-look photos from the film. I'm really hoping that this turns into a situation similar to the one that happened with Brad Pitt's zombie film World War Z: that production was also plagued with on-set turmoil and featured some huge reshoots, but it turned out to be a pretty solid piece of entertainment despite all of its behind-the-scenes issues. Mainstream westerns are rare these days, so here's hoping Jane Got A Gun is best remembered for being an awesome movie rather than for the troubles it had getting to the finish line. After a handful of delays, the film is currently slated for release on September 4th.

Here's the official synopsis:

Natalie Portman stars as Jane, who rebuilds her life with new husband Bill (Noah Emmerich) after being tormented by an outlaw gang led by Collin (McGregor). But things get ugly again when the husband has a fresh run-in with the gang, leaving Jane little choice but to ask her ex-fiance (Edgerton) for help.

The Colossal Titan from the anime series Attack On Titan has been given a new a very different look as a giant Be@rbrick figure. The toy is called "BE@RBRICK Super-Sized Giant 1000%," and it measures in at 70 cm or 27.5 in. It is currently available for pre-order online at Medicom Toy for 34,560 yen, which is around $287 in US dollars after tax. It's expected to ship in May. I think it's funny that something like this actually exists. I love the amusing toys that Japan comes up with! Collectors are sure to enjoy it.

Radically Fun Trailer for BIG GAME with Samuel L. Jackson

radically-fun-trailer-for-big-game-with-samuel-l-jackson

You have to watch this trailer for a hilarious-looking action-packed parody film called Big Game. It was directed by Finnish director Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports) and it stars Onni Tommila as a young hunter testing his manhood and Samuel L. Jackson as the President of the United States. The movie looks amazingly entertaining, and I have to see it! I think a lot of you are going to enjoy this trailer.

Big Game tells the story of Oskari (Tommila), a shy, nervous 13-year-old boy. Like his forefathers, his time has come to take a test of manhood by spending one day and one night alone in the wilderness of a vast local forest. Armed only with a bow and arrow, his task is to return with a prize to prove himself. But this is no ordinary night; Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and Oskari discovers the President of the United States (Jackson) in an escape pod. Now the fate of the most powerful man in the world lies in his hands. With the terrorists closing in, Oskari and the President must team up to survive the most extraordinary 24 hours of their lives.

The film also stars Jim Broadbent, Ted Levine, Victor Garber, Felicity Huffman, Mehmet Kurtulus and Ray Stevenson. The movie will be released in Finland on March 25th, with more European releases throughout the following months. Unfortunately, there's no U.S. release date set yet.

BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS Costume Made Using 3D Printer

2015 is sure to be loaded with all kinds of amazingly badass cosplay, especially with the popularization of 3D printers. Today, I wanted to share an incredible Batman costume from the video game Arkham Asylum that was created with a 3D printer. They only things that weren't created with the printer were the cape and under-suit. I've gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with how it turned out. However, I do think Batman's balls shouldn't be so vulnerable.

The outfit was created by Steven Dee of Crimson Coscrafts, along with the help of Tundra Designs and Gauntlet FX. I'm curious to know if hardcore cosplayers consider using a 3D print as cheating when making costumes. It sure seems to make things a helluva lot easier.

THE RAID Actors Join STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

0
0

J.J. Abrams has gone out of his way to show fans that he'll be using a ton of practical effects in his upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and we're all excited to see the films return to the aesthetic of the original trilogy instead of the bright, crisp look of the prequels. Now fans have something else to get excited about, because Abrams has just made a move to ensure that at least some of the hand-to-hand action in The Force Awakens has real weight to it: Twitch is reporting that a trio of actors from the incredible Indonesian martial arts film The Raid will appear in the new Star Wars film in some capacity.

Iko Uwais (Rama), Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog/Prakoso), and Cecep Arif Rahman (the assassin from The Raid 2) have all reportedly joined the movie, but their involvement remains shrouded in mystery. It remains to be seen whether they'll actually have lines of dialogue to deliver, whether they'll be doing motion-capture work, or maybe if they'll be a roving band of silent badass Sith warriors, but Abrams clearly hired them for their stunning martial arts skills, so you can expect to see some pretty kick-ass fight sequences in The Force Awakens.

This news hasn't been confirmed by any official sources as of yet, but consider this: Todd Brown, the guy who reported the news at Twitch, was a producer on The Raid films, so I think it's safe to say he probably has some pretty solid intel. Uwais definitely has the potential to become an international action star (fellow martial artist Tony Jaa has a role in Furious 7, so expect Uwais to pop up in more big blockbusters in the coming years), and if you call yourself a fan of action movies and you haven't seen The Raid and The Raid 2, you absolutely must seek out those films...and prepare for your jaw to hit the floor. The Raid 2 made my Top 10 Films of 2014 list (and Joey's, too), so check it out and get pumped for the action in the Star Wars franchise to get a lot more bone-crunching.

Gender-Swapped Disney Fan Art - FROZEN, ALADDIN, and More

Have you ever wondered what Elsa and Anna from Frozen would look like if they were guys instead of girls? How about if Ariel from The Little Mermaid had a twin brother? Those are just a couple of the amazing pieces of gender-swapped Disney fan art created by an artist named Sakimi Chan over at Deviant Art. Chan has much more than just Disney-related stuff on her profile page (which you should definitely check out), but these are the ones I wanted to showcase here to give you a taste of her talented renderings.

REVENGE OF THE SITH 3D to Debut at STAR WARS Celebration 2015

0
0

Remember when Lucasfilm planned to re-release the Star Wars prequel trilogy in 3D? The company dropped Episode I: The Phantom Menace back into theaters in February of 2012, but thanks to disappointing box office numbers and the fact that Disney purchased the company and set plans for a new trilogy in motion, Lucasfilm cancelled the remaining two re-releases and put all its efforts into developing Episode VII and beyond. A 3D version of Attack of the Clones was shown at a special tribute to the work of Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Muren in November of last year, but a 3D version of Revenge of the Sith has never been screened in public before.

That's about to change, as StarWars.com announced that the first public screening for the final prequel film will debut at this year's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California. With The Force Awakens on the horizon, this year's Celebration should be one of the biggest in the convention's history, and the folks at Lucasfilm are certainly aiming to make it memorable for the fans. Not only will attendees be able to see Revenge of the Sith in 3D, they will also be able to watch 3D projections of the other two prequel films as well as regular 2D projections of the entire original trilogy! Like many fans, I have some major issues with the prequel films, but the idea of sitting in a dark room with hundreds (if not thousands) of other Star Wars fanatics and seeing a never-before-seen version of one of the films admittedly sounds pretty freaking cool.

This year's Star Wars Celebration takes place from April 16-19th, and some tickets are still available if you're interested in making the trip.

Worlds Collide in Fan-Made DIE HARD: ALIEN VS PREDATOR Trailer

0
0

Alien vs. Predator was disappointing, but what happens if you insert NYPD cop John McClane into the centuries-old battle between the two alien races? A YouTube user with the handle ChiefBrodyRules set out to answer that question by creating a fan-made trailer for a film he calls Die Hard: Alien vs. Predator.

Who would you put your money on in that situation? If we're talking about young Bruce Willis here (as this video seems to imply, since it didn't include any footage from Live Free or Die Hard or the abysmal A Good Day to Die Hard), I have to admit I like his odds. If Danny Glover took down a Predator in Predator 2, then I have to believe McClane would be able to hold his own against them. But then again, those Aliens are pretty nasty... It's a tough call, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on who might come out on top if this was actually made into a movie back in the early '90s.

See Olivia Wilde in Freaky-Looking Photo & Poster for THE LAZARUS EFFECT

0
0

I'm a big fan of Olivia Wilde. While most people know her from her roles in blockbuster movies like TRON: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens, and In Time, those films haven't exactly given her much to chew on as an actress. She's done some solid work in smaller films like Drinking Buddies and People Like Us, and I'm excited to see where her career goes from here. One of her newest projects is a movie called The Lazarus Effect, which I've never heard of until today. Here's the official synopsis:

When a team of research students mapping the human brain accidentally kills one of their own, they unwittingly unlock a deadly force by reanimating their colleague. Fighting for their own lives, the team must contain their colleague in the lab before she is unleashed on the world.

It sounds a bit like a twist on the 1990 movie Flatliners, a film that gave a jolt to the careers of Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, and Julia Roberts. The Lazarus Effect has a great cast of its own, including Wilde, Mark Duplass (The League, Safety Not Guaranteed), Sarah Bolger (The Tudors, Once Upon A Time), Evan Peters (X-Men: Days of Future Past, American Horror Story), and Donald Glover (Community). You can see the first image from the movie above thanks to EW, and the poster below thanks to ComingSoon.

The Lazarus Effect arrives in theaters on February 27th, 2015.

Guys Do Gender-Bent Cosplay — Collection

While finding works for "The Best of Cosplay Collections," I've stumbled across a lot of cross-gender cosplay a.k.a crossplay. Women dressing as male characters is the overwhelming majority. Over the last several months, I've been passively collecting images of guys who are bravely - or, in some cases, jokingly - pushing gender norms the other way. Upon seeing some of the photos in the collection, my wife said I might be able to pull some of these off. I don't think I'm up for rocking these costumes, but my hat's off to these dudes who do.

Full Trailer for CALL OF DUTY: ONLINE Features Chris Evans

0
0

Call of Duty: Online is a PC game being released exclusively in China. It will be "free-to-play" and is being developed by Activision Shanghai. The game has been in beta for almost two years and will be officially launching this year. To help promote the game in China, Activision has enlisted Chris Evans (Captain America) to star in the trailer. It starts out with a group of officemates getting crushed in an online match only be be rescued by Evans who does his action hero thing. Other than some glaringly bad camera positioning, the trailer is fun. I looked at some gameplay footage, and it looks well made. If it's successful in China, I wonder what the odds are for a worldwide rollout and localization.

Marvin The Martian Fan Art by Ricardo Chucky

Marvin the Martian is one of my favorite Looney Tunes characters, and this piece of fan art created by Ricardo Chucky is stupendous! I love how he just took the design of the character and took it to a whole new level. It looks like part of his inspiration may have come from Napoleon, as he's kind of radiating a Napoleon complex in the image.

Channing Tatum's GAMBIT Slated for October 2016

Channing Tatum has been talking about playing Gambit in an X-Men movie for years, and now it's officially, 100% going to happen. The Wrap reports that 20th Century Fox has set Tatum to star in a solo X-Men spin-off film - which, at least for now, is titled Gambit - and they've finally given that film a release date: October 7th, 2016. Tatum himself took to Twitter to spread the news:

So with Gambit on the horizon, what does this mean for when we'll first see Tatum suited up as the card-throwing mutant? Will he first appear in his solo movie? It's possible, but considering X-Men: Apocalypse drops in May of 2016, I'm guessing we'll see him show up in a small role or post-credits sequence a few months before he gets his own movie.

Gambit will be written by RoboCop reboot scribe Josh Zetumer, and no director has been hired yet. What do you think about Tatum taking on this role? Think he'll do a better job as Remy LeBeau than Taylor Kitsch did in X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

Ethan Hawke on DOCTOR STRANGE and Joining the Marvel Universe

Before Benedict Cumberbatch landed the role of Stephen Strange in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, there were several other actors in contention. At one point Joaquin Phoenix almost got the gig, and Ethan Hawke was rumored to have been offered the role of the Sorcerer Supreme after Phoenix dropped out. A lot of people thought the actor would get the gig, especially given his background with director Scott Derrickson, as they worked together on the horror film Sinister

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hawke revealed that he came “as close as anybody could,” to landing the role of Strange. Sounds like he may have gotten really close. Now that Strange is off the table though, the actor is still up for joining the Marvel’s cinematic universe.

"There’s a tremendous amount of salesmanship that’s now really important to a studio like that. It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and you’re not acting. We’re living in the age of Marvel .... They’re making movies at a high rate, and they’re making them successfully. I’m totally open to doing something like that."

I think Hawke would fit right in with the universe. He would have been a solid Strange, but the Marvel universe is loaded with lots of other characters that he could take on! Who are some Marvel characters that you think Hawke would be perfect for?

TERMINATOR: GENISYS Photo - Battle Ready T-800

terminator-genisys-photo-battle-ready-t-800

Paramount Pictures has released a new photo from director Alan Taylor's Terminator: Genisys. It gives us a good look at a battle ready T-800. These things have always looked insanely menacing, and I'm sure the red glowing eyes are a big reason for that. I really liked what I saw in the first trailer for this movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this new story plays out, and how it will actually connect with the first two original films.

The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

The badass looking movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee, and Matt Smith. It's set to be released on July 1st, 2015!

There’s a Working Nintendo Inside This Ecto-1

theres-a-working-nintendo-inside-this-ecto-1

If you’re a big fan of Ghostbusters and the original Nintendo and you have $500 laying around, then this custom made NES die-cast Ecto-1 replica is for you! It's two amazing things that we loved in the '80s rolled into one! It’s currently up for sale on eBay by ultimatecustoms1982.

I know a Hot Wheels 1/18th-scale Ecto-1 replica and a retrobit NES system doesn’t really sound like it’s quite worth $500. So I guess what you would be paying for here is the craftsmanship of it all being put together. I think it's really cool that they could actually pull this off! Here’s the description from the seller:

You are bidding on a one of a kind modified Hot Wheels Ghostbusters ECTO-1 die-cast toy car with a built-in Retrobit NES system. The car has been heavily modified to fit both controller ports, the cartridge slot and power button, as well as the system. The interior of the car is entirely removed and all doors are non-accessible. The windows of the car feature a tinted GB themed decal to hide the visible wiring and interior mods (hard to see in the picture). The blue sirens on the top of the car have been wired to illuminate with blue LED's when the system is powered on. The roof-rack operates on a hinge and is not removable, must be flipped up to insert the game cartridge. The door panel that holds the controller ports varies slightly in color from the remainder of the vehicle as the door panel had to be re-sprayed after being modded (only visible in very certain lighting). There are a few nicks that were patched and repainted as well as some chips on the car's flare that were repainted also. Overall the care is extremely clean despite the heavy mod work that was required. The controller features light-up green buttons. System is 100% functional but is not an original NES board or pins, it is the aftermarket Retrobit console, the most noticeable difference in these systems is that the picture may not be as crisp as an original NES.  Please refer to the pictures for further details, and shoot me a message with any questions before bidding. There is a small flaw to the bottom front panel of the wireless controller where the plastic was slightly gouged pre-customization, sanded down but still visible.
With any custom console, it is important to treat it with care and handle gently.

Trailer for David O. Russell's ACCIDENTAL LOVE with Jake Gyllenhaal

0

trailer-for-david-orussells-accidental-love-with-jake-gyllenhaal

A trailer for David O'Russell's wacky political comedy Accidental Love has been released. The movie was previously titled Nailed and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, and James Marsden.

There's a lot of drama surrounding this film production, which was mostly shot back in 2008 before production was shut down due to money issues. There was still one key scene that had to be shot when that happened, and investors tried to get the film back into production for two years before Russell walked away from it in 2010. The director has since removed his name from the project, and it was replaced with the pseudonym Stephen Greene. "Greene" said this about the project in a previous interview:

“The circumstances under which the film would now be completed are much different on several fundamental levels than when we embarked several years ago. I, unfortunately, am no longer involved in the project and cannot call it ‘my’ film.”

Russell is a great filmmaker who has brought us movies such as The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle. It's a shame that something like this had to happen to one of his projects, but Millennium Entertainment is obviously trying to salvage what they can from it. The movie actually looks like it could be entertaining. It's got a very quirky vibe. Here's the synopsis:

Formerly known as Nailed (David O. Russell), Accidental Love tells the story of a small town waitress (Biel), who accidentally gets a nail lodged in her head as her boyfriend (Marsden) attempts his marriage proposal. Her predicament leads her on a journey to Washington DC, where she meets a dashing but clueless congressman (Gyllenhaal), who might be able to help her unusual case.
Will their blossoming romance survive the cut-throat politics of the Capital? With an all-star cast that also includes Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan, James Brolin and Paul Reubens,Accidental Love is the funny story of what happens when sparks fly and love interferes with what you stand for.

The movie will be released on February 10th, 2015. Does this look like a movie you'd watch?
