The Trailer for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Almost Wasn't Released

Star Wars fans all over the world were thrilled when Disney released the first teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Forces Awakens. It was completely awesome and, for the most part, the fans were ecstatic with what they saw in the teaser. I know I was!

I was surprised to learn that Disney almost didn't even release that trailer because Abrams likes to keep the footage from the films he works on under warps. Thankfully, Disney won that battle and released it. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger did a special event with Variety in which he talked a lot about the studios plans for the Star Wars franchise. Here's an excerpt:

"Disney nearly didn’t release a trailer, Iger admitted. Abrams is known for wanting to keep footage of his films under wraps. But the rabid 'Star Wars' fanbase prompted Disney to come up with the brief introduction of what the new film would look like."

Of course, Disney had to give the fans something! Especially with all the leaked information and fan speculation running rampant online. We were all aching for it. This is one of those moments where I'm glad that Disney held the power.

Since the trailer was released, 110 million people have watched it, then there's also the 40 million who have watched all those great parodies based on it. Ya gotta admit... thats some pretty good marketing for a movie that doesn't comes out for another year. Iger went on to say:

"I keep telling J.J. Abrams this is a $4 billion movie. We need to treat this very special. It’s an unbelievable privilege and unbelievable responsibility to take a jewel and treat it in a way that is respectful of its past but brings it into the future."

It is a $4 billion dollar movie... if it succeeds. This is the movie that will launch a new series of Star Wars movies. It has to do well, because if it doesn't, if it's crap, who knows how fans are going to react? Over time this film and the franchise it's a part of will bring in that $4 billion dollars.

Iger then turned his attention to the practical effects that Abrams used to bring this next chapter of the story to life.

Iger noted how Abrams has relied more on physical sets and props that are significant in size and scope, rather than computer-generated imagery.

"That will give the film a look that will be extremely respectful of the look George (Lucas) created in the ’70s,” Iger said, “and will play well with ardent ‘Star Wars’ fans and play well with audiences today.”

Iger noted how the use of computer-generated graphics has made filmmaking seem “too easy.” “There’s a sameness to a lot of these films today,” Iger said. “The wow factor isn’t what it used to be. J.J. decided to create the physical wow factor.”

I'm all about the wow factor! Bring it on Abrams!

Heartwarming Family Portraits for Classic Video Games

The family that up up down down left right left right b a starts together, stays together. Thus far, Andry Rajoelina‘s sentimental Family Series has only focused on comic book characters, from large superhero teams to heroes and their sidekicks. In his latest additions to the series, he once again takes aim at your heartstrings, only this time he uses video game franchises as his ammunition of choice. We’ve included our favorite pieces above and below, but you can check out the rest and buy prints of them at Geek-Art.

BLADE RUNNER 2 Is the Best Thing Harrison Ford Has Ever Read

Ridley Scott is currently making the interview rounds for Exodus: Gods and Kings, and while talking to MTV he opened up a little bit about Prometheus 2 and Blade Runner 2. He also talked about why he avoids reading press and reviews on the films he makes. One of the comments he makes is that he doesn't make films for the people, he makes them for himself.

Talking about Prometheus 2, the director said the the film will focus on the characters Shaw and David and explained,

"You have too, you can have a person go off into the galaxy, and have a person who still has his head off. Once that head goes back on, he's really dangerous. But he's also very seductive, so maybe he'll persuade her to help him put the head back."

So Prometheus 2 will follow the adventures of Shaw and David as they try to find a body to put his head on! Of course, there will be more to it than that, but it sounds like that's going to be part of it. Then when David does get his body... look out!

When Blade Runner 2 comes up in the conversation, the director reiterates that the script is written and ready to go. Unfortunately, as we previously reported, Scott doesn't plan on directing it. When asked if Harrison Ford would be back, Scott said that he is and continued,

"Harrison... said this is the best thing I've ever read. So he's very relevant to what happened in the first one. I'm not just doing a sequel with lots of action and see how father we can go with the special effects because you can't really. With Blade Runner we kind of landed on a somehow credible future and its very difficult to change than because it's been so influential with everything else."

Well, even though Scott isn't directing the film, at least Ford is on board and the script for it is the best thing that he has ever read. Here's to hoping that it's actually really good.

Cinderella Uses Tinder to Find Prince Charming in Animated Comedy Sketch

cinderella-uses-tinder-to-find-prince-charming-in-animated-comedy-sketch

This animated comedy short called "Tinderella" was released earlier this year, but I hadn’t seen until a friend brought it to my attention. The short features Cinderella using the hook-up/dating app Tinder to find her prince charming. The video was released by College Humor, and anyone that has ever used Tinder is sure to find it funny.

Present day Cinderella doesn't wait for a fairy godmother to fix her up, she uses Tinder. Watch our take on the classic fairytale, updated for 2014. It may not end happily ever after, but it's good enough for tonight.

Leave it to technology and silly apps to make fairy godmothers obsolete.

Rebel Wilson Had a Meeting for GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot

As you know, Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has been developing a Ghostbusters reboot that will feature an all-female cast. I haven’t been a big fan of the concept of this iteration since it was first brought up. The director has been meeting with actresses to fill the roles that he’s created for the movie, and one of the actresses that he has met with is Pitch Perfect co-star Rebel Wilson.

Wilson revealed this little detail herself to Matt Lauer on The Today Show. When asked about the Ghostbusters film, she said,

“Look, I have had a meeting, but who knows? They have to look at the script when it’s finished. I would even do that without the money truck. I’d do that for free. I probably shouldn’t say that live on TV.”

I guess she’s one of the actresses that fit the style of the film and the story that Feig wants to tell. This really is going to be a very, very different version of the Ghostbusters story, that will in no way, shape, or form represent the Ghostbusters films we all know and love.

The director is still working on the script with screenwriter Katie Dippold, and they are scoping out actresses before it’s done, which is a normal thing for Hollywood to do.

Wilson is a funny actress, but it’s just hard for me to imagine a Ghostbusters movie with her style of comedy. She has worked with Feig before, though, so we know that she fits his brand of comedy, which doesn’t make me feel any better about this franchise.

No casting has been confirmed for the film yet, but one day it will be confirmed, and it will be interesting to see what the reaction is. Other actresses that have been suggested in the past are Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini, Emma Stone, Ellen DeGeneres, and Lena Dunham, and then there’s Bill Hader, who wants to be involved with it too.

STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE - 150 Behind-the-Scenes Photos

Remember how excited we were to see Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace when it was first released in theaters 15 years ago?! I couldn't wait to see that movie, and I'm feeling the same anticipation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens that I felt for this film in 1999. Unfortunately for me and a lot of other fans, it kind of left us with a disappointed feeling. Yes, it had some awesome moments, especially the ones that involved Darth Maul. But it was mostly annoying with Young Anakin, Jar Jar, and stale acting.

I know there are some fans of these prequel films out there, though, and I can appreciate that. Hell, there are some bad movies out there that I like too. Anyway, we have 150 behind-the-scenes photos from The Phantom Menace for you check out today. Whether or not you thought the movie was good or bad, it's cool to see these photos from the film production.

Mondo HOME ALONE Art Print by DKNG

mondo-home-alone-art-print-by-dkng12

Mondo has unveiled a Home Alone poster that they will be releasing. It was created by DKNG. As you can see, it's a perfect piece of tribute art for the classic John Hughes-directed holiday movie. Here's what DKNG said about the print in a statement:

“When approaching a concept for Home Alone, we knew the interior of the McCallister home and all of Kevin’s tricks to foil the Wet Bandits were likely to be the focus of our design. However, we also wanted to incorporate the exterior of the house and provide a different perspective on some of the movie’s most iconic scenes. We took some liberties with the architecture of the house and the layout of the property, but in the end the exterior allowed us to include some of our favorite imagery from Home Alone including the Oh-Kay Plumbing van, the perpetually knocked over bronze statue, and off course, Old Man Marley. This poster was an interesting challenge for us as we’ve typically been using two-color printing for this more realistic style. This time around, we stepped up to a four-color design that looks great with the fine halftones blending the colors. The poster is printed on a subtle metallic paper that will give the snow an extra shimmer as well.”

The poster print above is an 18×24 is an edition of only 275. It will cost $40, and it goes on sale at a random time today, December 11th. Make sure to follow @MondoNews to find out when it goes on sale.

I also included another piece of Home Along inspired art that was released by artist Matt Ryan earlier this week called "Angels With Filthy Souls."

Aaron Sorkin Wanted Tom Cruise to Play Steve Jobs

0
0

There has been a lot of crazy drama surrounding Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs movie that Sony Pictures dropped, and you should read about all of it here. It’s really entertaining and interesting stuff. Universal Pictures ended up picking up the film project with Michael Fassbender attached to play Jobs. Before he ended up in the role, though, the only other two actors we knew about to be up for the project were Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale.

Turns out, just a couple of months ago Tom Cruise, Tobey Maguire, and Matthew McConaughey were also in the running. Sorkin’s favorite for the lead role though was Cruise. He wanted the actor in the role bad, which would have been really quite interesting to see.

Before Sony ditched the project, Sorkin was pushing for Cruise in a couple of emails that he shot off to the studio executives. In them he explains why Cruise is right for the part. Here’s what he said:

“I’ve gotten Scott and Danny to the point where they're now a little interested in Tom Cruise. Though both remain concerned about his age (me less so) everyone agrees that he's an actor who can really handle language (Lions for Lambs, Magnolia, A Few Good Men) and a movie star who feels comfortable owning the stage. He's in London filming right now and Scott wants to get him a script to read and a meeting with Danny before Danny comes here to LA next week. I've been warned that he likes to bring in Chris McQuarrie to re-write but [Creative Artists Agency (CAA) agent] Maha Dakhil (who wants him in the movie) has assured me that won't happen.”

He then wrote this follow-up email after speaking to Boyle about Cruise. Apparently, Boyle wasn't completely sold on the idea.

“I just got off the phone with Danny who's concerned about the age but I think I got him thinking about it and he's going to look at some scenes from Lions for Lambs where Tom's basically auditioning for Jobs. He's also concerned that the choice will be met with derision because it's such a commercial choice but I honestly think that ends up working for us. Tom's going to surprise some people and they'll want to reward that. I don't think we'd have to recast Woz. Seth's the right age in the first act and Tom's the right age in the third. And the movie announces itself pretty quickly as not being literal--as being a painting rather than a photograph. Look, I wouldn't cast Clint Eastwood but if I saw Tom Cruise flying around the backstage corridors of Symphony Hall I wouldn't think he was too old. I think it would be dazzling performance.”

Obviously cruise didn’t get the the part, but it’s one of those fun “what if” scenarios to think about. Maybe if Fassbender drops out they can start talking to Cruise again.

It has also been reported that Jeff Daniels could join the project as former Apple CEO John Sculley, which is a part that Tom Hanks was looking to play at one point. Natalie Portman was also up for the role of Jobs' daughter, but ended up dropping out, probably because of all the crazy drama surrounding the project.

Do you think Cruise would have made a decent Steve Jobs?

Epic Journey Told in Touching Animated Short - HOME SWEET HOME

Filmmaker Stéphane Paccolat sent in this delightful animated short for you to watch called "Home Sweet Home." The film tells the story of a house that escapes from its suburban foundations and sets off on an epic journey. This is a beautifully animated adventure that you’re going to love, so please take the time to watch it. I personally enjoyed everything about this film. One of my favorite aspects of the film was seeing the great expressions of these house characters.

Pierre Clenet, Alejandro Diaz, and Romain Mazevet also worked on bringing this charismatic and moving story to life. Please enjoy.

Jonathan Frakes Wants to Direct STAR TREK 3

We recently reported that Star Trek franchise screenwriter Roberto Orci is no longer set to direct Star Trek 3. The studio apparently has a short list of directors they would like to see direct the movie, and it was revealed that Edgar Wright is one of them.

As soon as word got out that Star Trek 3 didn't have a director a hashtage started trending on Twitter — #BringInRiker. They are campaigning to get Paramount Pictures to enlist the former Star Trek: The Next Generation First Officer and veteran Star Trek director Jonathan Frakes for the job.

After several days of this, Frakes responded and said he would love to do it. In a radio interview with Komo News, Franks let fans know that he's "all over it." Here's a breakdown of what Franks said:

"Hashtag, BringInRiker!" he yells to me from his cell phone. "I'm all over it. I'm all over it."

Frakes says he's made first contact with Producer J.J. Abrams, and his agent has reached out to Paramount Pictures. "I would love that job," he says.

Typically, directors are coy about their ambitions. Not Frakes. "I say, unabashedly, I'd be great at it and would love to do it."

Hell yeah! I'd love to see Frakes get the gig. If at one point the studio was willing to give it to a guy that has never directed anything before, it makes more sense to give the job to someone who has a long history with Star Trek and who also has some experience directing. Seems to me like he's a better choice for the job than Orci was. But, who knows, the studio might have someone even better lined up... like Wright. If Wright doesn't work out. though, then sure! give the gig to Frakes! He directed Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection

90 Facts About the 1990s - Video

90-facts-about-the-1990s-video

Mental Floss has released a wonderful trivia filled new episode of their "List Show" giving us 90 facts about the 1990s. I was a teenager through most of '90s, and I spent a lot of that time in movie theaters and playing PlayStation, so there's a lot of other stuff that I just didn't know or care to know about at the time. This 11-minute video just filled me in on a lot of things that I wasn't aware of. Some of it is stupid, but there were also some things that I found interesting. Like why Furbies were banned from offices at the National Security Agency and how Pogs being banned from schools because they thought it was gambling! Enjoy!

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS - 9 TV Spots, 2 Clips, and a Featurette

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings comes out this weekend, and 20th Century Fox has unloaded a ton of videos to promote it. We've got two clips, one featurette, and nine TV spots below for you to watch. This is such an insane story, and I'm excited to see Scott's vision of it up on the big screen.

The biblical epic stars Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley

The story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. sing state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Edgerton), setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

Exodus: Gods and Kings opens in theaters on December 12th.

Every On-Screen Death in THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy

Someone at Digg has created a video montage of every single casualty that is shown in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy for The Lord of the Rings. It's six minutes of pure death, and in the end these films tell a story about the genocide of orcs. Seriously, so many orcs died! After watching this video I kind of feel sorry for them. But, they wouldn't have died had they decided to join the good guys! The caption with the video points out that they used the extended editions of these films to make the video. You know what would be interesting? A movie that told this tale from the point of view of the orcs. In total there are 212,470 on-screen deaths.

Cuba Gooding Jr. to Play O.J. Simpson in AMERICAN CRIME STORY

0
0

It was previously reported that American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy was developing a companion series called American Crime Story. The new anthology series will focus on true crime stories throughout history, and they are starting with O.J. Simpson. The first season of the series will be called American Crime Story: The People Vs. O.J. Simpson, and they’ve cast Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. as Simpson. American Horror Story alum Sarah Paulson has also joined the production as prosecutor Marcia Rachel Clark.

According to THR, the 10-episode first season “examines the O.J. Simpson trial as told from the perspective of the lawyers, and is poised to explore the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court. More significantly, it will display how a combination of prosecution confidence, defense wiliness and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.”

The O.J. Simpson trial was a fascinating moment in history, and just like the trial back in the 1990s, I'm sure this new series will get the attention of audiences. This also seems like the kind of role that could reinvigorate Gooding Jr.'s career.

Army of Darkness is easily one of my favorite films directed by Sam Raimi, and I hope that one day he makes that sequel that he has talked about in the past. With the Ash Vs. The Evil Dead TV series coming, though, who knows if that film sequel will ever happen? Maybe the series will include the continuation of that Army of Darkness storyline, which would be just as cool.

We've got a couple of groovy pieces of tribute art for you to check out that were created by Chris Weston and Jeff Boyas. Here are the details:

Disney’s STAR WARS Theme Park Attractions Will Based on New Films

disneys-star-wars-theme-park-attractions-will-based-on-new-films

Up until this point, the only main Star Wars attraction that exists at Disneyland is Star Tours and a live show or two — I freakin’ love Star Tours, by the way. But, as expected, we are about to see an influx of Star Wars attractions hitting the Disneyland theme parks, and at Variety’s Dealmakers Breakfast, Disney Chairman and CEO, Bob Iger, revealed that the attractions we see will be based on the upcoming films rather than the older ones. This is what he had to say:

“There will be a much larger ‘Star Wars’ presence in our parks globally. But we want to do this big, which takes time, and to do it right… I didn’t want someone to say, ‘I just saw the movie and there’s nothing in that movie in this (attraction).’ We waited to see what this film would have in it.”

Iger then confirmed that Disney’s Imagineering team have been in early development on attractions based on the old films, but all of that was discontinued once they knew exactly what their upcoming slate of films would look like, and how the elements in those films could be used in their parks.

“We couldn’t tell them what was new. I slowed it all down so what we come forward with will have a blend of the past, present and maybe the future. Now we have a sense of what’s in ‘Star Wars 8,’ and what some of the standalone films will have in them.”

I love the fact that they are going to offer a blend of everything for both the new and old fans of the Star Wars saga. Disney will offer us our first look at the new Star Wars attractions next year, which is just in time for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th.

The New York Times managed to get 18 talented actors from some of this year's best films together, and then got them to make out. This was done for a video series called "9 Kisses," and in a way it's supposed to celebrate the great performances of these actors and actresses.

Each video features two stars as they play out an intimate moment in a public setting at night. Of course, the details of the settings vary. There's a good mix of kisses that range from passionate to awkward to funny.

The couples used in the videos include Benedict Cumberbatch and Reese WitherspoonSteve Carell and Laura DernRosario Dawson and Jenny Slate; Chadwick Boseman and Kristen StewartPatricia Arquette and Jason Schwartzman; David Oyelowo and Timothy SpallJohn Lithgow and Julianne MooreJack O’Connell and Shailene WoodleyGugu Mbatha-Raw and Miles Teller.

McDonald's Is Getting Its Own SOCIAL NETWORK-Style Origin Film

0
0

The biggest fast food chain in the world is getting its own movie. The film will be called The Founder, and Saving Mr. Banks director, John Lee Hancock, is in negotiations to direct. The film will tell the origin story of McDonald's and its rise to the top in the fast food empire. This is seriously like the The Social Network, but with McDonald's. Here's a description of the story from THR:

"The Founder is a drama that tells the true story of how Ray Kroc, a salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers' speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential.
