13-best-disney-co-characters-from-1990s-animated-series

Growing up in the 1990s I had a blast watching the Disney animated series that the studio produced. These shows included DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Gummie Bears, Chip ’n Dale Rescue Rangers, and, of course, Gargoyles. I’ve started showing these cartoons to my kids, and I’ve been reminded of some of the awesome characters that filled these shows. There are the main characters that we all know and love like Goliath, Darkwing Duck, and others, but I wanted to shine a light on some of my favorite supporting characters in these series that I thought were awesome. These were all characters that I enjoyed seeing when they showed up in these cartoons.

DuckTales* - Launchpad McQuack

Launchpad was Scrooge McDuck's personal pilot, who sometimes acted as his body guard and was idolized as a hero by Huey, Dewey, and Louie's friend Doofus. This was just such a cool character, and he was later involved with Gizmoduck in the Darkwing Duck series.

DuckTales* - Doofus Drake

How sad is it that this poor character was named Doofus? He is a friend of Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Launchpad's sidekick. There’s a reason his name is Doofus though, as he is is a dim-witted and clumsy character, but I loved his positive attitude and the fact that he had a strong moral compass. He worshipped Launchpad, and was kind of delusional at time. He was the center of attention in an episode called "Superdoo!" In the episode he uses some newly acquired superpowers to “save the Junior Woodchucks from catastrophe only to voluntarily relinquish them for the sake of hard work and friendship.”

Sorry. I couldn't find a video featuring this lovable character.

Gummi Bears* - Gruffi Gummi

What I liked about this Gummi character is that he was a skilled craftsman and mechanic. He was the guy who fixed up the old Gummi technology, and also set up traps around the Gummi Glen to deal with humans and ogres. This was a character I really connected with on the show, and I just thought he was the most badass Gummi living in the Glen. He was also respected as the voice of stability when the other Gummis would fall into despair.

Gummi Bears* - Gritty

Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime) voiced this character, who is Ursa's lieutenant. He was bias towards humans, which kind of caused some tension with the other Gummis. I always thought he was the Barbics' most badass warrior. I liked that he was completely fearless, and that patch he wore over his eye proves that he is willing to get into some hard core situations.

Chip ’n Dale Rescue Rangers* - Monterey Jack

Monterey Jack, also known as "Monty" and "Cheeser,” which is what his mom called him, is an adventure enthusiast from Australia who spent several years traveling the world before a chance meeting with Chip and Dale during their first case. The reason his mom calls him “Cheeser” is because he has an overpowering addiction to cheese. The sight or smell of cheese causes him to turn into a crazy moustache-twisting, spiralling-eyed "cheese attack" mouse. Monty also loves to tell stories of his travels, and he often uses colorful "pseudo-australianisms" while talking, such as "Strike me starkers." I’ve always liked adventurous characters like this.

Chip ’n Dale Rescue Rangers* - Rat Capone

This gangster rat character is based on the legendary gangster Al Capone. The character is responsible for all the illegal handling of the cheese within the Rangers' city. He also has his hand in stealing gold, and one time he even tried to build a gold castle. The Rescue Rangers stopped him though, because no one should own a gold castle! Then there were the two great sidekicks as well, they went by the names of Arnold Mousenegger and Sugar Ray Lizard.

TaleSpin — Wildcat

This lion based character may seem completely clueless and act very childlike, but he’s a mechanical genius. He speaks with a slight lisp, but this dude could fix a smashed telephone in under ten seconds. One of the best parts about this character is that he was the show's moral compass and a good example for kids. He’s honest and truthful, sometimes a little too truthful, which kind of annoys Baloo. Dinosaurs are his favorite animal.

Darkwing Duck - Morgana McCawber

I just loved that Morgana McCawber was a sorceress that brought a cool fantasy element to the series. She was originally a villain, but eventually finds her way to the good side and even becomes Darkwing's girlfriend. Morgana may be powerful, but she does have some issues using her powers. It doesn’t help that she forgets which spell to use at the specific times she needs to use one. She also has a couple of pet bats named Eek and Squeak and a spider. She was like a female duck Doctor Strange.

Darkwing Duck - Gizmoduck

Gizmoduck is freakin’ awesome, and one of my all time favorites. He’s Launchpad's old friend and Darkwing Duck’s rival superhero. He originally appeared as a recurring character in DuckTales. Darkwing hates that Gizmoduck completely overshadows him in fame and attention whenever he’s in St. Canard, and they team up. Of course, Darkwing comes to accept who he is and his lack of powers when he saves Gizmoduck from Megavolt in the episode "Up, Up and Awry".

Darkwing Duck - Comet Guy

This was an alien humanoid superhero from a planet named Mertz. He has several superpowers  that consists of throwing fireballs, freeze vision, flight, super strength, and super speed. His biggest weakness is that he’s dull-witted, and the sound of a bell makes him dance. The best part is he can’t stop dancing until he hears a whistle. The character is a failure on his planet where everyone is a superhero, but Darkwing trains him to turn his weaknesses into strengths.

Gargoyles - David Xanatos

He may be a shady character, but I’ve always liked David Xanatos. He is the founder, owner and CEO of Xanatos Enterprises and also a member of the Illuminati. He ends up purchasing the Gargoyles' castle so that he can have it reconstructed on top of his New York City skyscraper, because of the legend that it would awake the six gargoyles on the castle. Without Xanatos, the Gargoyles would have never been able to come back. He was one slick dude, and even had a specialized red armored suit, the design of which was modeled after Goliath.

Gargoyles - Demona

Demona, a.k.a. She-Demon, was such a great and sinister character. She was a member of the Wyvern Clan, and was Goliath's mate. Demona betrayed Castle Wyvern to the Vikings in 995 A.D. She was not frozen in stone like the other Gargoyles. Thanks to a magical spell she was able to live through the thousand years, and over that time she developed a deep hatred of all humans, making her an enemy of the clan. She was also a powerful sorceress.

Gargoyles - Lexington

I was a short kid growing up so Lexington was one of those characters I was able to connect with because he was the smallest of the Gargoyles clan. He was also a technical wizard, who embraced technology. He had a knack for computers and building things, like the motorcycle and helicopter that he engineered. It was his eager and outgoing personality that also drew me to like the character.

*Series debuted in the '80s but aired into the '90s.

Kick-Ass TERMINATOR: GENISYS Trailer!

"I've been waiting for you."

The first full trailer for Terminator: Genisys has been released, and overall I think it looks awesome. There are a couple parts where I had "Oh, brother" moments, like when they once again reused the line, "Come with me if you want to live." I know they want to harken back to previous films when they do stuff like that, but no one will ever deliver it as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger did. It is fun seeing these characters back in action though, and I love that we have another liquid metal Terminator in the mix. The CG version of Arnold looked a lot better than what we saw in Terminator: Salvation. Then there's Emilia Clarke, who portrays Sarah Connor as a freakin' badass, which is great to see. I'm way excited for the movie, and I think it looks incredibly  promising. It definitely looks better than the last Terminator film!

Schwarzenegger also stars in the film alongside Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee, and Matt Smith. Here's the synopsis:

Terminator: Genisys starts in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

This movie is the first in a planned trilogy, and I'm looking forward to see where the story goes. Terminator: Genisys will be released in theaters on July 1st, 2015. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think of it!

Matt Reeves Discusses PLANET OF THE APES Films Leading to 1968 Story

What I love about these new Planet of the Apes films that are being made, is that we know what everything is leading up to. It's just really interesting to see the road being paved to the original 1968 movie. Somewhere down the line, some poor astronaut returns to earth only to find that it has been taken over by apes.

In an interview with JoBlo, director Matt Reeves talks about the upcoming coming sequel that he's developing. One of the things he says is that the next chapter in the story might just reach the point of the original movie.

Reeves talks about his excitement about Caesar and where his story will take him, and he goes into a lot of detail.

"Well it’s interesting because Mark Bomback and I are working on the next story, and I have to say given the trajectory of how his arc has gone from the first movie through DAWN so far, what is so exciting to us is that this is sort of his biggest arc yet. We are going to take him to places that test him in a way that is more painful, and in ways that he has never been tested before. [We will] really test his leadership, and more than that his heart and soul. There are ways in which the experience he had with Koba in the last film, really create a context in this story that is going to be, in a way, his greatest challenge yet. We are very excited about it you know.
"You have to keep in mind that he is such a unique character and the world he comes from is a human background. He was raised by humans and in a way he sort of thought he was human, yet an outsider, but he is also an ape. And when he was thrown in with the apes who he later led to a revolution, he was quite different than they were because he hadn’t been brought up as an ape. He was both ape and human and also neither. That made him a unique character to be a bridge between these two worlds in the story.
"As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of DAWN. That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with. Where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of it. The things that happen in that story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply. It’s going to be an epic story. I think you’ve probably read that I sort of described it where in the first film was very much about his rise from humble beginnings to being a revolutionary. The second movie was about having to rise to the challenge of being a great leader in the most difficult of times. This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses."

Caesar is such a great and complex character, and it has been amazing watching him grow into the leader that he has become. Reeves was then asked if he would remake the 1968 movie if the story goes that far, and this was his reply:

"To me the idea is that the 1968 films stands as trajectory in that, what is so exciting is that the world of that film is so different from where things started in RISE, and the way they are in DAWN and now will be in the next film. There is a huge distance to cover between here and there that is all about Caesar and future generations, and how this world has transformed into that world, and the struggle that they’ll have to go through and how we create the world that we know from that. I think once you’ve gone through all of those chapters, you’ve gotten all the richness of those stories, you could very well find yourself going into that story again, but I think it would be from a new perspective.

"The idea would never be to remake the ’68 film. There might be some of those events from another perspective, and obviously to also see them as events that grew out of everything that we’ve been watching from this new iteration. They wouldn’t be exactly the same either. So if, and when, we ever get there, which I think is an exciting notion, it would definitely not be a remake but it would be sort of a re-telling of those events from a new perspective. And the events themselves would probably be a bit different since they will have grown out of these films."

That's a pretty interesting answer, so there is the possibility of seeing a film that takes place in that timeline. I love the idea of seeing what happens from a different perspective. I don't have an issue with him playing with the original film like that because I love what he and Rupert Wyatt have done with the franchise so far. Basically it sounds like there could be a lot of other movies made in this story before putting the focus back onto the humans.

ASSASSIN'S CREED Paris vs Real Paris 2014

Assassin's Creed Unity is the most gorgeous looking game in the franchise. While I've heard the gameplay does not take the same leap, that's fine for its first foray into the newest generation of consoles. Unity's setting in revolutionary Paris is the perfect backdrop for the game. But how accurately did they recreate old Paris? Damien Hypolite printed out screenshots from the game and then in two trips went to the real locations. With a bit of patience and a steady hand, Hypolite was able to show how amazingly accurately the game recreates old Paris.

Two months ago FOX announced that they will be releasing the long-awaited Deadpool movie in 2016. According to Deadline, the studio is now closing a deal with Ryan Ryenolds to reprise his role as the character that first appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds was great as Wade Wilson at the beginning of the film, but what the studio did with Deadpool later on in that story is unforgivable.

ryan-reynolds-officially-signing-on-to-play-deadpool

I'm happy to hear that Reynolds is coming back, though! The movie is being directed by Tim Miller, and he is developing the project from a script written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Everyone involved with this project wants to get Deadpool right for the big screen, so I think fans can expect something that they will all enjoy.

Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, is a "smart-mouthed mercenary with terminal cancer who undergoes military experiments in an attempt to replicate Wolverine’s mutant healing factor. He comes away with the ability to heal quickly, but for the price of being indestructible he is rendered severely scarred. His acerbic attitude remains, though, earning him the nickname The Merc with a Mouth."

This is one of my favorite Marvel characters, and I'm excited to finally see him up on the big screen eating Chimichangas and kicking ass! Deadpool is scheduled to be released on February 12th, 2016, and Reynolds is going to be freakin' awesome!

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Stabilized Gifs of the Millennium Falcon

As much as I love the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer, I'm a bit wary of the modern shooting style. Attack of The Clones kind of started the trend with its hard zooms and over the shoulder shots. Revenge of the Sith, with its opening race between Anakin and Obi Wan, had a very CGI no-cut feel to it.

While the highlight of the teaser trailer is the twisting turning shot of the Millennium Falcon, it all felt a bit too modern for my liking. I'm obviously making critiques on a shot without any context, but I'm hoping J.J. Abrams is working to mimic the shot style of the original trilogy over the prequel style.

A couple folks on Reddit stabilized and leveled off the Millennium Falcon shot, making what's happening a lot easier to understand.

Artist Marko Manev created this beautiful illustration featuring one of Batman's most tragic villains, Mr. Freeze. The piece is called "Heart of Ice," and it's part of the Teefury and Bottleneck Gallery holiday t-shirt and prints releases. If you want to buy yourself a t-shirt with this design on it, click here. Here are a couple quotes from the villain from Batman: The Animated Series:

"I failed you. I wish there were another way for me to say it. I cannot. I can only beg your forgiveness, and pray you hear me somehow, someplace... someplace where a warm hand waits for mine."

Or, if you prefer the more menacing side of Mr. Freeze:

"Sooner or later all who stand in my way must feel the icy touch of death!"

Chris Pratt Looking to Join THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Western

$

I'm sure a floodgate of movie offers came rushing in to Chris Pratt after Guardians of the Galaxy came out. This guy is on the road to becoming a huge star. Variety is reporting that the actor is currently in early talks to star alongside Denzel Washington in MGM's remake of the 1960 western, The Magnificent Seven

The Magnificent Seven is one of my favorite westerns, and I'm curious to see what this remake would look like. The movie itself is a remake of Seven Samurai. The story basically revolves around seven gunslingers who protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws.

The film has been in development at the studio since 2012, and at one point Tom Cruise and Matt Damon were even looking to join the project. The current script was recently reworked by John Lee Hancock and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote the previous version.

We are going to see Pratt in Jurassic World next year, and he was also recently cast in the big screen adaptation of the comic book Cowboy Ninja Viking.

Turns out all of those casting rumors surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange were true! Marvel has officially confirmed that the actor will indeed play the Sorcerer Supreme, and I couldn't be more happy. He's going to be freakin' awesome as this character! Marvel Studios president and Producer Kevin Feige had this to say in a statement:

“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

There's been a lot of fan support for Cumberbatch leading up to this announcement, so I think a lot of fans are very happy that this casting decision went through. Over the years, several names have been linked to this coveted superhero role. Some of those named include Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan HawkeJared Leto, Tom Hardy, Ewan McGregorMatthew McConaugheyColin FarrellJake Gyllenhaal, and Oscar Isaac.

I'm so glad that the search is over. Marvel went down a long road to get to this point, and in the end the part went to the right actor. I can't wait to see how Marvel plans to bring this amazing character to the big screen!

Here's the press release from Marvel:

Benedict Cumberbatch has entered the world of the mystic arts.
The actor will star in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” scheduled to hit theaters November 4, 2016. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson with Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Cumberbatch rose to international prominence with his critically acclaimed turn as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation in “Sherlock,” currently preparing its fourth season. The series’ most recent season earned Cumberbatch the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie in 2014, after winning the BAFTA/LA Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year in 2013.
Cumberbatch most recently starred in “The Imitation Game,” playing famed mathematician and logician Alan Turing, and will soon be seen in “The Hobbit: The Army of the Five Armies” as Smaug and the Necromancer. For the role of Smaug, Cumberbatch stepped into the world of motion capture to bring the dragon to life. He will next be seen in Scott Cooper’s film “Black Mass,” the story of Whitey Bulger coming to theaters next September, where he stars opposite Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton.
The star’s other credits include the Academy Award-winning “12 Years a Slave,” “War Horse,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “August: Osage County,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Fifth Estate,” and “Parade’s End.” Benedict will be returning to the stage this summer in Hamlet at the Barbican with Lyndsey Turner directing. His last stage performance in Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein opposite Jonny Lee Miller awarded him the Olivier.
With “Doctor Strange,” Cumberbatch is just the latest actor to join the bold Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing new heroes and continuing the adventures of fan favorites across multiple films.

Hilarious Trailer for the Vampire Comedy WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

What We Do In The Shadows is one of the funniest movies that I've seen this year. You have got to see this movie when it's released! I promise that you will laugh your ass off. This is the brain child of Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs. Shark) and they play centuries-old vampires in the film. The story is told from the perspective of a documentary crew who follows a small group of vampires that have lost touch with society over the years, and are still trying to adapt to modern life. I'm seriously excited about seeing this flick again.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS chronicles the adventures of four vampire roommates trying to get by in a modern world that’s not always hospitable to the undead. Clement and Waititi, creators of the HBO hit series “Flight of the Conchords,” co-wrote, co-directed, and co-star in this hilarious send-up in which an endearingly unhip quartet of friends reveal to us or, rather, to the documentary crew that’s filming them, the details of their daily-make that nightly-routine. Ranging in age from 183 to 8,000, and in appearance from adorably youthful to Nosferatu-crusty, they squabble over household chores, struggle to keep up with the latest trends in technology and fashion, antagonize the local werewolves, cruise clubs for lovely ladies, and deal with the rigors of living on a very, very strict diet. The film also stars Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie Van Beek.

If you haven't read my review of the film yet, you can check it out hereWhat We Do in the Shadows opens up in theaters on February 13th, 2015

Comedian Alan Starzinski plays drunk Aquaman in a funny comedy sketch for UCBcomedy. Aquaman is completely hammered, and while giving a speech, he just goes off and starts insulting the other members of the Justice League superhero team, such as Batman, Superman, and Plastic Man. Actor Cliff Curtis is the latest actor to join AMC's companion series to The Walking Dead, which is known as Cobalt. You might the recognize the New Zealand actor from films such as Live Free or Die HardSunshineTraining DayColombianaBlowBringing Out the DeadWhale RiderOnce Were Warriors, and The Piano.

Curtis joins the previously announced Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam-Carey in the new series. He will play the lead character in the series, which is a male divorced teacher named Sean Cabrera. He's described as "a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life."

The story "takes place during the same zombie apocalypse depicted on The Walking Dead but in a different location." It revolves Sean and a female guidance counselor.

Cobalt was co-created by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Sons of Anarchy writer Dave Erickson. The network has hired Adam Davidson to write the pilot episode. After seeing what has been done with The Walking Dead, I can only imagine this new series will be just as good.

Marvel's JESSICA JONES Series to Star Krysten Ritter

Marvel has cast Krysten Ritter in the title role of their upcoming Netflix series Jessica Jones. You might know Ritter from projects such as Veronica Mars, Breaking Bad, The Blacklist, and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. She definitely seems to fit the character's personality, which is the most important aspect to nail down.

Jessica Jones is described as being “cynical, sardonic and tough-as-nails, but innately cool and sexy.” She’s a superhero who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, and that leads to her giving up the superhero life and opening up her own detective agency where she helps people and assists other superheroes.

Netflix is developing three other series with Marvel — Daredevil (currently in production), Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. These four series will lead into a Netflix event called The Defenders. The series will begin roll out in 2015, and I’m stoked to see how they turn out.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2 Finds a Director

Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninjas Turtles, and they’re looking to hire Earth to Echo director David Green to direct it. The studio is currently in talks with him to take on the challenge.

Jonathan Liebesman directed the last film, which I thought was absolutely awful in almost every way. I did not like that movie at all, and I’m a huge fan of the Ninja Turtles! It made $464 million at the box office worldwide, though, so it has an audience that buys in to the terribleness.

Michael Bay will be back as a producer on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 along with his Platinum Dune partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form

There are no plot details at this point, but the movie is going to be scripted by Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec, who both worked on the script for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which was a great flick. Unfortunately, they are teaming up with the guy who made Earth to Echo, which was kind of disappointing.

Maybe the sequel will be better than the first one, but I’m not going to hold my breath. I remember that time that I thought the G.I. Joe sequel was going to be good. Boy, was I wrong!

I suspect that the cast of the movie will return to reprise their roles in the sequel. Did anyone like the last TMNT movie, and is anyone excited for a sequel?

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and AKIRA Mashup Art

Here's a great piece of fan art by Laurie Greasley that mashes elements from Star Wars: The Force Awakens with the classic poster design for Akira. This is a representation of Daisy Ridley's character in The Force Awakens dramatically walking toward her strange, boxy-looking vehicle. The first thing I said to myself when I saw that thing in the trailer was, "Yeah, that looks like something J.J. Abrams would use."

WB Wants Christopher Nolan to Direct READY PLAYER ONE

Interstellar director Christopher Nolan has apparently been offered the opportunity to direct Warner Bros. upcoming sci-fi adventure film, Ready Player One. The news comes from Tracking Board, but there's no word on whether the director is even considering taking it. It seems like it would be a great project for him to take on, though.

The film is based on the novel written by Ernest Cline, and the script for the project is currently being written by Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand). The story seems to fit with the type of film that Nolan likes to make. Ready Player One is set in the year 2044, and it follows a teenage boy who is steadily becoming obsessed with a virtual-reality utopia known as the OASIS.

Who knows if Nolan will take on the project, but it would be cool if he did. I think he could turn this layered sci-fi virtual reality story into an incredibly awesome movie. I'm really curious to see what Nolan's next film will be, and this is the first project I've heard his name attached to since Interstellar exploded on the big screen.

Here's the official description of the book:

In the near future, outcast teenager Wade Watts escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first.
