Tom Cruise Wanted for HIGHLANDER Remake

Summit Entertainment is still looking to get their remake of Highlander off the ground and into production. The movie has been in development for years, and now they are looking to cast Tom Cruise in the role of the mentor, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, who was previously played by Sean Connery.

The news comes from The Wrap, who says the interest is only one-sided for now, as Cruise is completely focused on Mission: Impossible 5 at the moment. He definitely shouldn't be focussing on other things while he's hanging outside of an airplane while in midair.

Even though this would be a co-starring role, the studio is willing beef it up to accommodate the actor if he wanted a bigger part. Cruise has taken smaller roles in the past, so I think as long as the character is interesting to him, it's something he might take on without having to enlarge the role.

A representative for star told the site that Highlander “is one of many projects that [has] come to him and he discusses,” and then adds that the actor is “far from talks” and that “he is offered tons of projects.”

Cruise obviously isn't going to take every movie offer that comes his way, but this would be a really interesting choice for him if he did take it. He has been doing a lot of sci-fi recently, and it would be cool to see him jump into an action fantasy movie like Highlander, which follows an immortal Scottish swordsman on a quest for revenge against The Kurgan, "a barbarian who has chased him across time as they battle for an all-powerful Prize."

The reboot will be helmed by first time director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who previously served as second unit director and visual effects supervisor on Snow White and the Huntsman. This is a pretty big jump for the guy, and since he has never really directed anything else, we have no idea if he has the talent or not. I hope the guy comes in and blows us away with something amazing, but that has yet to be seen.

In the end, Summit wants Cruise in the movie. The actor isn't really looking into it now, but there's always a chance that he might take it on if he likes what he sees.

BACK TO THE FUTURE Flux Capacitor Watch

Everyday we inch closer to the 30th anniversary of the theatrical release of Robert ZemeckisBack to the Future. Next year we’ll also be living in the future year depicted in Back to the Future Part II. So it’s no wonder why we’ve seen an influx of BTTF-themed items modeled after the Flux Capacitor, from a USB charger to an extremely accurate replica that you can use as a keychain. We’ve also seen concept art for a Flux Capacitor watch and a parody video that imagined that the then unreleased iPhone 6 came equipped with a working version of Doc Brown’s invention. We didn’t get a time traveling phone, but Think Geek made the Flux Capacitor watch a reality — or, at least, a watch modeled after the look of the Flux Capacitor. Here’s a breakdown of how to read the time using the flashing flux lights:

Press the bottom button and then get ready to count lights. Time is divided into hours, minutes first digit, minutes second digit - so it looks confusing, but is very easy to read. (Example: 10 lights, 5 lights, 3 lights = 10:53 - and it repeats). At the same time, the time circuit LCD display will show you the date.

There’s also a "Time Travel" mode button that, when pressed, will play light animation and then display a random date. The watch is available exclusively at Think Geek and is reasonably priced at $49.99. It would be a great addition to any Marty McFly cosplay. Of course, if you wanna have a more accurate time piece to what Michael J. Fox wore in the movie, you’d better also spring for the Classic Calculator Watch, which is actually cheaper at only $24.99.

ZOOLANDER Sequel Adds Penelope Cruz

The success of Dumb and Dumber To has helped add more steam to the Zoolander sequel. According to Deadline, Penelope Cruz will join the cast with Ben Stiller set to return as Derek Zoolander and Owen Wilson coming back as Hansel. Will Ferrell is also rumored to be returning as Mugatu. We don't know much else other than Justin Theroux penned the script and that Paramount Pictures will distribute.

It's been about 13 years since the first Zoolander amused audiences. I hope we get more zany comedies to off set all the superhero movies coming out, especially DC's "no jokes" comic book movies.

Boba Fett Escapes the Sarlacc in Art by Cristi Balanescu

People love seeing Boba Fett escaping from the sarlacc pit — or the sarlacc creature located inside the Great Pit of Carkoon on Tatooine if you want to get technical, you nerd. Last year we posted a piece of fan art depicting Boba rocketing through the air to safety. Today we bring you a similarly themed, and an arguably more epic, piece of art by Cristi Balanescu, which was used for the Star Wars Fantasy Flight games. It seems no one wants to believe the most feared bounty hunter in the universe would just go out like a punk as it seemed he did in Return of the Jedi. So we stand behind the expended universe and acknowledge that Boba Fett was able to survive the grasps of the sarlacc thanks to his Mandalorian armor. Depending on when the standalone Boba Fett movie will take place, we may get to see this depicted on the big screen someday as well.

Hat tip to Xombiedrige.

Pixar's INSIDE OUT - "Say Hello to" Anger, Fear, and Disgust Clips

With seven months to go before its release, the marketing for Pixar's Inside Out has just gotten started. So far we've had a teaser trailer, posters, and an introduction video to the character of Sadness. Today we've got three more character videos, which feature Anger, Fear, and Disgust. The clips are really short. I'm guessing we'll see our first full trailer around Christmas (but that's a complete guess).

Official synopsis:

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Inside Out opens up in theaters June 19, 2015 (USA).

FRIENDS OF THE GALAXY — GOTG and FRIENDS Intro Mashup

We’ve posted quite a few Guardians of the Galaxy mashups on our site. My favorite so far is the Star Wars mashup that cut footage from the Star Wars trilogy into a more modern style trailer that used Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky” and Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling” — the two songs used most heavily in the promotion of GotG. That thing was perfection. This new mashup by Robert Jones parodies the Friends intro, using the classic sitcom’s theme to introduce characters from Marvel’s runaway hit. I love/hate this mashup. I love it because it’s a funny concept executed well. I hate it because it immediately forced my brain to consider which Guardians of the Galaxy character would be which Friends character. Now I’m gonna force you to read what I came up with:

I know some of you will say Peter Quill’s womanizing makes him Joey, but his wise cracks make him more of a Chandler. Since Bradley Cooper based Rocket Raccoon on Joe Pesci, his fiery Italian-like outbursts make him Joey. Gamora’s will-they-won’t-they dynamic with Quill makes her Monica. Nebula is Rachel. Drax is Pheobe. And there’s gotta be no argument on this one, Groot is Ross. Bonus: The Collector is Gunther. *drops microphone*

*picks microphone back up* Watch the mashup, and then attempt to best my Friends/Guardians match-ups in the comments section below. Also, do you guys think the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy are guardians in real life?

The Legend of Zelda’s Link, Super Mario Bros.' Mario, and some other video game friends pull off some serious and some silly skateboarding tricks in this parody. The video was done by flatground skateboarding wizard and Kenny Anderson clone Christopher Chann, who is the one dressed up as Link. Chann pulled off an incredible upset in the first round of Battle at The Berrics 7, winning over former champ Chris Cole. The remix of the Legend of Zelda theme featured in the video was done by Fenzy Music.

Stephen King’s THE STAND Will Have Four Films!

Back in October, Stephen King was talking about director Josh Boone’s vision of The Stand, and how much he liked his take. He also teased that the movie would be told in a very innovative way and that it might end up being more than one film.

Well, Boone, who directed The Fault in Our Stars, confirmed that in an interview with Kevin Smith on his Hollywood Babble-On Podcast. It seems like Warner Bros. is definitely planning something big. While talking about the film and how it all came together, the director revealed that the studio is looking at adapting this book into four films, which is insanely awesome!

I’m surprised WB would do that, especially since they weren’t even willing to give Ron Howard's The Gunslinger adaptation a trilogy of films. But here’s Boone’s explanation of how this epic film project fell into place. He started off by talking about the first drafts of the script that he was given.

“[Those drafts] were not so much where I thought they should be going with it. [They were] much more like a big summer blockbuster. When I thought about The Stand it’s so much about the vast network of characters, and all their problems. It’s kind of a morality play set in post-apocalyptic America. The battle between good and evil is the battle for these peoples’ souls. They make choices which dictate the fate of humanity.”

He went on to talk about his ideas for condensing this massive book into a single film:

“I really wanted to do an A-list actor, really grounded, credible version of the movie. I sold them on that and they hired me…I sold them on a single, three hour movie. I went and got [Stephen] King sold on it, everybody’s really excited…I told the story non-linear and that was the way I was able to compress that book and get everything into that script. You open with Mother Abigail dying and sending the guys off, and then you jump back in time… So what happened is the script gets finished, I write it in like five months, everybody loves it, King loves it, $87 million is what it was budgeted at, really expensive for a horror drama that doesn’t have set pieces.”

I’d love to read the script that he wrote for that. I’m really curious to know how he actually managed fit it all together in only three hours. The studio was looking for a little more, though. They loved the script but wanted all of the things that it was missing, like the set pieces, so they offered Boone something bigger and better.

“They came back and said ‘would you do it as multiple films?’ and I said ‘fuck yes!’ I loved my script, and I was willing to drop it in an instant because you’re able to do an even truer version that way. So I think we are going to do like four movies. I can’t tell you anything about how we’re going to do them, or what’s going to be in which movie. I’ll just say we are going to do four movies, and we’re going to do The Stand at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about. We’re looking to go into production next year, maybe in the spring.”

That’s so freakin’ awesome! For those of you who don’t know, Boone is a life-long fan of Stephen King and is a great admirer of his work. The guy loves King’s stuff just as much as I do, and I’m confident that he’s going to be able to give fans an epic and amazing film.

I really, really, really wish that I could have attended this Secret Cinema event screening of Back to the Future. It’s the most epic Back to the Future screening I’ve ever seen. It wasn't just a screening of the classic movie, it was an event that included a live performances and offered a theme park like experience. They rebuilt the town of Hill Valley for crying’ out loud! The video below will show you exactly what I’m talking about.

The event took place this last summer and I’m so, so sad that I missed out on it. Luckily for me and anyone else that lives in Los Angeles, Secret Cinema is coming to town sometime in 2015! GOTHAM Could Kill Off Established Characters

$

According to Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, some of the established characters in the fantastic series may not make it through the series alive. You’d think that many of these main characters from the comic universe would be safe, but when he was asked about this in an interview with EW, he offered a surprising answer. This is the question that was asked:

“Before Gotham premiered there was some discussion about how the show cannot kill any members of its cast of iconic characters, since the story is a prequel. And you had a great reply to that by saying, 'It’s sad thing if you can only generate suspense by killing people.' I’m wondering now that you’ve dug more into the season and are juggling all these characters, with some being more interesting than others, whether there’s a part of you that’s like, 'You know, what if we did?' Or is it just iron clad that you can’t deviate that far from canon?”

This is Heller’s unexpected reply:

"I wouldn’t say it’s iron clad. You’d need a damn good reason to do it and a damn good end game to justify it. We’re certainly just learning the ropes at this stage. Not to be modest about it, but we’re still learning how to do a show this big. I’m always deeply reluctant to kill off characters simply for the shock value of killing them off. I’m not averse to cheap tricks. But apart from anything else, this season literally every actor has come through and [performed really strong]. I would hate to lose any of them. Killing off Sean Bean in the first season of Game of Thrones made everyone go, “Oh, what a good idea that is!” But I don’t think it’s a good idea if you’ve got Sean Bean. The bad one was on Deadwood, when they had David Carradine doing that marvelous Wild Bill Hickok, and then he was gone."

I really like that they would consider killing off established characters in the series. It will mix things up a lot, and make this show its own thing. If they are looking to set themselves apart from the rest of the canon, this is the way to do it. Just don't kill off Penguin, and it would be kind of awkward if they killed off Bruce Wayne.

Amazing Pitch Reel for a CGI Restored Version of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

amazing-pitch-reel-for-a-restored-version-of-battlestar-galactica

For those of you who are fans of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica series, you’re going to want to check this out. It’s a demo reel created by Adam “Mojo” Lebowitz that gives us a look at what a digitally restored special edition of Battlestar Galactica would look like with a CGI upgrade, and it’s freakin' glorious! If he actually had a budget and a team to work with, imagine what they could do. The same thing was done for the original Star Trek series, so why not give Battlestar a little love?!

Lebowitz has worked as a Senior Computer Animator on Babylon 5, a Visual Effects Supervisor on the 2001 restoration of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a digital artist on Serenity, a Computer Graphics Animation Supervisor on Star Trek: Voyager, and a previz artist on Oz: The Great and Powerful. He was also a CGI artist on Ron Moore’s reinvention of Battlestar Galactica.

This was made to help spark some interest in the powers-at-be to move forward with a special edition of this classic sci-fi series. This would definitely make a great tribute to creator Glen A. Larson, who passed away recently. Something like this should definitely happen in his honor.

BETTER CALL SAUL Gets a New Spot and Premiere Date

AMC has released a new teaser spot for the Breaking Bad spinoff series Better Call Saul, and they set the official two night series premiere for February 8th and 9th. This will be the first time that the network will have a two-night season premiere.

Bob Odenkirk reprises his role as the colorful attorney Saul Goodman. It also stars Jonathan Banks, Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, and Michael Mando. Here’s the synopsis:

The series is set six years before Saul Goodman meets Walter White. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is “fixer” Mike Ehrmantraut, a beloved character introduced in ‘Breaking Bad.’ The series will track Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts “criminal” in “Criminal lawyer.” The series’ tone is dramatic, woven with dark humor.

I’m confident that creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould are going to give fans a show they are going to enjoy.

Mel Gibson to Direct Andrew Garfield in HACKSAW RIDGE

It looks like Mel Gibson is getting ready to jump back behind the camera and direct a new movie! He’s currently in talks to helm a film called Hacksaw RidgeThe Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield is in discussions to take on the lead role.

The film will tell the true story of World War II US army medic Desmond T. Doss. He was was at the Battle of Okinawa, and what makes his story interesting is the fact that he refused to kill anyone. In the process became became the first Conscientious Objector in American history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. For those of you not familiar with what a Conscientious Objector is, it’s an ”individual who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, and/or religion.”

This seems like a great project for Gibson, who previously brought us films such as Braveheart, Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto. He knows how to tell a great story about characters who are prepared to go through hell for their principles and in the end prevail over their hardships.

I could see Gibson and Garfield make a great filmmaking team, and I hope these are the guys we see bring this story to life on the big screen.

Christopher Nolan Talks INTERSTELLAR Ending and Plot Twist

$
0
0

Obviously the following article is going to contain SPOILERS as it includes parts of an interview in which Christopher Nolan talks about the end of his sci-fi film Interstellar.

The most powerful aspect of the film is the message that it delivers about love. Love is a central theme of the story, and it plays a role in the pivotal moment at the end that brings everything together. Of course, the story also highlights the dark side of humanity. Especially when Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and his team arrive on Dr. Mann’s planet, lured there by the promising data the they received. When they arrive and wake Mann (Matt Damon) up, we learn that the bastard faked the data so that he could get rescued. Mann eventually attacks Cooper and leaves him to die, so that he can initiate “Plan B”.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Nolan offered some more insight into Mann's motivations, saying,

"It’s very straightforward: selfishness and cowardice. It’s very human, and I love what Matt did with that; he found the reality of it. It’s the kind of sequence where you loathe the guy because he’s doing something that you feel you might wind up doing in a similar situation. It’s very logical, but the rationalization of it is extraordinary—the way he was able to rationalize his own cowardice into a positive thing. Loneliness and desperation will make us do crazy things."

It was a really awkward moment in the film when Mann turned on Cooper, but it's one of those things that I felt was going to happen as I was watching the movie. Things just didn't seem right, and the guy was shady from the very beginning. Nolan continued,

"[Mann is] not exactly crazy. It’s weirdly logical, but appallingly selfish. The only outcome to the mission for him was [a colony]. I think, and it’s something we talked a lot about — and it’s something he says in the film — that there was no doubt in his mind that his was going to be the planet, his was going to be the mission. So whatever the risks, he felt very confident. And when he’s confronted by the bleak reality of just dying out there alone, it all starts to unravel."

When asked to about the ambiguous, psychedelic ending of the film, where Cooper is sucked into the black hole and the events that followed shortly after, he wasn't willing to explain it. This is what he said, though:

“No way, man! You’re just going to have to go back and see it again. It’s there for you to make what you make of it. People do always have radically different interpretations of things I put in there, but I know what I think and I don’t like it to have any more validity than the experience you have watching it.”

That's a great answer. I love that he lets the ending mean whatever the audience wants it to mean.

Red-Band Holiday Trailer for THE WEDDING RINGER

Sony Pictures has released a hilarious red-band trailer for their upcoming comedy The Wedding Ringer. When I first heard about this movie I thought it was going to be stupid, but every trailer I’ve seen for it has made me laugh, including this one. It looks a lot better than what I was expecting, and I’m looking forward to see it. Judging from the Twitter reviews in the trailer, audiences are going to have fun watching this movie.

The movie stars Josh Gad and Kevin Hart, and I have to warn you… this trailer features a ton of profanity. So it’s probably not safe to watch at work unless profanity is A-OK in your workplace.

Doug Harris (Gad) is a loveable but socially awkward groom-to-be with a problem: he has no best man. With less than two weeks to go until he marries the girl of his dreams (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting), Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan (Hart), owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for socially challenged guys in need. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the big con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man Jimmy.

The comedy comes out on January 16th, 2015.
