Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Lots of great movies got released in the '70s and '80s. Having been born in the early '80s, my memories of films comes from watching them in the '90s, which was harder to do before the existence of Netflix. Artist ADN, a.k.a. Adrian Noterdam, has created four art pieces based on four movies that he drew in the style of The Simpsons. If you don't instantly recognize the movies, I've added captions. My favorite of the bunch is the relatively more obscure The Way of The Dragon/Return of the Dragon piece. I love that movie because it features a fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. It's pretty cool and a bit weird as Lee pulls off Norris' chest hair during the fight.

Each piece is 16" x 12" and can be purchased for $40 from Hero Complex Gallery. There are only 40 prints of each so these will sell out quickly.

Trailer for the Found Footage Time-Travel Film PROJECT ALMANAC

Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for their upcoming found footage time travel film, Project Almanac. The movie used to be called Welcome to Yesterday, but the change of the title doesn’t make the movie look any better.

The story follows a group of friends who discover a time machine. As they mess around with it, like a bunch of idiots, they alter certain events to play out in their favor. As they do this, an unforeseen ripple effect changes everything, and things go bad.

I think the movie looks absurd, but there are some people that might find it enjoyable. The studio is obviously trying to emulate the success of Chronicle, only it doesn’t look as good. The movie comes out on January 30th, 2015.

Does Marvel Appreciate Their Fans More Than DC?

0
0
does-marvel-appreciate-their-fans-more-than-dc

Marvel is clearly kicking DC's ass when it come to their comic book movies, and I think they will continue to do so. DC is sure to make some great upcoming movies, but I don't think they will be as good as what Marvel is accomplishing. Marvel just has a better grasp on their stories and the universe they've created. This isn't the only thing Marvel is great at, though. They also show a respect for their fan base and they know how to treat them.

GeekTyrant.com was launched at the same time Jon Favreau's first Iron Man film was released, and my very first post was a review of that film. In a way, Marvel was the catalyst for what GeekTyrant would become. I think that’s all thanks to Favreau and his love for the fans. That guy knows what he’s doing when it comes fan interaction, and he set the standard for Marvel on how their fans should be treated. I remember sitting in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con the year he introduced the world to Iron Man. That was such a cool experience, and it has only gotten bigger and better from there.

Over the last 6 years, we’ve seen Marvel grow and DC fumble around with what they've wanted to do with their comic book properties (outside of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy). One of the main things that I've noticed over the years is that Marvel embraces their fans, but Warner Bros. and DC don't seem share that attribute. At least they don't seem to show it.

I've been thinking about this since Marvel held that big event for fans and the press where they made their huge Phase 3 movie lineup announcement. They put on a show to get fans pumped up about what they were planning. DC on the other hand released their movie lineup in a little phone conference meeting, and a series of tweets were released by someone who was listening in. It was nice to get the news, but they could have put on a really cool exciting show for the fans just like Marvel did if they wanted. They had the chance to do something fun for the fans, but they didn't.

Now, I understand that both studios go all out at Comic-Con, but that's the only place that Warner Bros. caters to the fans. Outside of that, things are very different. Especially with how they treat leaked material from the films they are working on. As a geek site, we post everything that we can so that the fans can be up to date with all of the awesomeness that is coming their way. A lot of fans want to see that stuff, and Marvel and Warner Bros. treat leaked material very differently.

A big example of this is when the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer leaked. Marvel rolled with it and released the official trailer shortly after the leaked version hit the Internet. The fans were loving what they were seeing, and instead of trying to pull it off the Internet, the studio delivered the fans an HD version, which ended up becoming the most watched trailer ever from the studio. Marvel even boasted about that. Marvel has never really asked us to take any leaked photos or footage off the site. They don't blame the geek sites for posting stuff and being excited about it.

Warner Bros. is a different story, though. I can't even count how many times we've received notices from their legal department to take stuff down on our site. Now they do have a right to do that, and we respect it. But why just not let the fans enjoy the cool leaked material like Marvel does? WB is also kind of mean about it. I've received a few condescending emails from them trying to make me feel stupid. I love a lot of the films that WB develops, and we are constantly helping them build buzz for their projects. When something cool leaks for an upcoming movie, it's free promotion for them! Who doesn't like a little free promotional love? They seem to blame the geek movie sites and the fans when stuff like this happens. FOX does the same thing. My personal Facebook account was suspended for almost a week when I posted an image of The Thing from the Fantastic Four reboot because the studio reported me. I didn't take the damn picture! It was floating around everywhere else!

We aren't the ones who leak the material, we are just delivering the information to the fans. Marvel has an understanding of this. They didn't blame any websites or fans when the Age of Ultron trailer leaked. Instead, they went after the actual source of the leak, who may have been someone within Marvel studios. I didn't get anything from their lawyers or a rude email. They just let the fans enjoy the trailer.

I love how Marvel appreciates the fans and embraces them. They don’t shut them out of what they are doing. They have always been very open with everything. Sometimes I'm surprised by how much they do talk about things, especially Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. That guy loves to talk about their movies just enough to make the fans happy. Marvel even listens to what the fans are saying and want. Joss Whedon has even admitted in an interview how he is “enlightened” by the fans. He said,

“Every now and then, you definitely learn something from some random person on the Internet who sees your work in a way you didn't, who sees truth in it, that's worth it."

You don't see anyone from DC discussing their slate of films. Hell, after Marvel did their big announcement, Feige sat down with a group of reporters and let them ask questions.

On the DC side of things, even Arrow’s Stephen Amell wasn’t happy with how DC made their big line-up announcement because of how it undermined the new Flash series, explaining that the announcement was made the day after the second episode of the The Flash had aired. Amell thinks that by announcing Ezra Miller to play the speedster superhero on the big screen, it immediately undercut the public perception of Grant Gustin’s Flash in the TV role.

In the end, I’ve seen that Marvel utilizes the fans to their advantage to help build their success. While WB and DC tend to shut them out and push them away. This is all based on what I’ve seen and experienced over the years as I’ve been running a geek website. I think DC should lighten up a bit.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

New Promo for Pixar's TOY STORY THAT TIME FORGOT

Disney has released a short new promo trailer for Pixar's upcoming holiday special, Toy Story That Time Forgot. I've always enjoyed these little franchise shorts that Pixar and Disney create. They're fun to watch, especially with the kids.

This half-hour TV special focuses on Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang as they encounter a line of reptilian warrior action figures who don’t know they’re action figures.

After a post-Christmas play date, the Toy Story gang finds themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. If the gang hopes to return to Bonnie’s room, they’ll have to rely on Trixie the triceratops.

The original cast is back to reprise their roles including Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Timothy Dalton as Mr. Pricklepants, Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. The special also stars Kevin McKidd (Rome) as Reptillus Maximus.

Toy Story That Time Forgot premieres December 2nd at 8:00 PM on ABC. Thanks to Pixar Post for the spot.

Pixar's INSIDE OUT Posters for Joy, Fear, Anger, and Disgust

Earlier today we shared a poster for Sadness from Pixar's Inside Out. Now we have posters for Joy, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. Looking at the detail on the face shows that they are made up of  dots and not a hard surface like previous Pixar characters. I wonder what that could mean for character animation. Inside Out opens in theaters of the mind on June 19, 2015 (USA).

Pixar's official synopsis for Inside Out:

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

"There's no margin for error. No half-measures. This is all or nothing."

Ewan McGregor has a new heist thriller coming out called Son of a Gun, which is the feature film debut of writer and director Julius Avery. The movie also stars the talented Brenton Thwaites (The Signal, The Giver).

The story follows a veteran thief and a freshly released young convict, who team up to pull off a big gold heist. From there it turns into a dangerous game where everything is on the line and no one can be trusted.

Locked up for a minor crime, 19 year old JR (Thwaites) quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. Protection is paramount. JR soon finds himself under the watchful eye of Australia's most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch (McGregor). But protection comes at a price. Lynch and his crew have plans for their young protegee. Upon release, JR must help secure Lynch's freedom, staging a daring prison break. As a reward, he’s invited to join the crew as they plan a gold heist that promises to deliver millions. However, as things start to go wrong, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

The movie is set to be released sometime in 2015.

Honest Trailer for Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID

Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. To celebrate, Screen Junkies whipped up a new installment of Honest Trailers that explores the numerous flawed lessons taught in the Disney animated classic — which saved the Mouse House and kicked off their animated hot streak that dominated the ’90s. I’m surprised they don’t mention the phallic imagery hidden in the movie and on the art used for posters and the original VHS cover (pictured above). Slight oversight aside, the Screen Junkies gang do a great job, as always. They even enlisted the help of AVbyte to create honest renditions of a few of the movie’s famous songs.

It's been 25 years since Disney took us under the sea. Now, relive the film that saved Disney before Pixar did - The Little Mermaid!!

Chris Pratt Is Willing to Appear on AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

I know it’s a real long shot that we will ever get to see any of the Guardians of the Galaxy characters in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but if the opportunity ever arises, Chris Pratt says he’s down to reprise his role of Star-Lord for the television show.

Pratt is currently in the middle of shooting the final season of NBC’s Parks and Recreation. While attending a press event for the comedy series, Zap2it asked Pratt if he would be up for appearing on the second season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Pratt replied,

"I wouldn't rule it out. Marvel would have to decide, but if it made sense for the brand and for the story, yeah sure."

I don't know why the interviewer specified the second season of the show, because we know that there's no way in hell that's ever going to happen. The fact that Star-Lord is currently in an entirely different galaxy in the Marvel universe, his inclusion in the show is very unlikely, but it’s still a fun thought. Even if it did happen, they probably wouldn't be able to work until after Phase 3 of Marvel's movie plan is completed. There's no telling if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will even still be around when that happens.

How crazy would it be, though, if the studio were somehow able to implement him into the series?!

"Encourage an Artist" Comic by Zen Pencils, Inspired by Kevin Smith Quote

Artist Zen Pencils, inspired by Kevin Smith's words about encouraging artists, created this cool comic strip. It doesn't take much to foster a talent that can open worlds and change lives. The same effort it takes to destroy someone could instead be channeled to build up and inspire. I was pretty luck to have a dad who is an artist and said I could do anything I set my mind to. He's continued to be a big supporter of all my "crazy" ideas.

Via Geek X GirlsKevin Smith on encouraging artists:

"Remember: It costs nothing to encourage an artist, and the potential benefits are staggering. A pat on the back to an artist now could one day result in your favorite film, or the cartoon you love to get stoned watching, or the song that saves your life. Discourage an artist, you get absolutely nothing in return, ever. I’ve spent the better part of my career getting up after movies and encouraging potential artists in the audience to give it a shot, pointing to myself as proof that anybody can make their dreams come true. I don’t do this altruistically: I’m selfishly insuring that I have cool shit to watch one day by encouraging anybody to follow passions like film or storytelling."

Details of the 2009 GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Script Revealed

0

details-revealed-for-the-2009-ghostbusters-3-script

Bloody-Disgusting got their hands on a copy of the Ghostbusters 3 script written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg back in 2009. This version of the script will never be made into a movie, so I wouldn’t worry about any spoilers. Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has taken the reigns and is set to direct and co-write a Ghostbusters reboot that will feature a female cast of Ghostbusters.

The script definitely sounds like it would have made for an interesting movie. The site did a breakdown of the story and they reveal all the details you need to know about what this film would have been. I’ve included a rundown of the film below with a few excepts from the report.

There are some aspects that I like about this, and other things that I don’t. One thing is for sure is that it doesn’t capture the spirit of the original film. I can see why Bill Murray didn’t want to be a part of it.

"The script opens with a prologue similar to the first Ghostbusters. Two museum security guards are walking down a narrow hallway at night, boring each other with droll chit-chat. They turn a corner to see objects floating about, aimed right for them. An apparition appears, with long arms and legs and no face. It’s speaks some kind of ancient incantation, then attacks.

"Cut to a hyper-stylized commercial for Ghostbusters, Inc. -complete with obnoxious dub step version of the classic theme song. The rag-tag business started by the original guys is now run like any other corporation, with shit-eating CEO TODD PRENDAGHAST in charge. How loathsome is Todd? He keeps SLIMER in a glass-walled containment unit as a trophy."

As for where our favorite characters are in the story, Dr. Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) no longer run the Ghostbusters company. They were removed from their top positions when they destroyed the Triborough Bridge while trying to capture some kind of ghostly entity. They still work for the company, but they have been demoted to "first responders." They work with Dana Barrett’s Oscar Barrett, which was previously rumored. Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) still works for the team, but he’s now just a mechanic. As for Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), he landed the job of being the mayor of New York City. Apparently he won the election based on an anti-Ghostbusters campaign. This obviously didn't go over very well with Ray and Egon, and they no longer have contact with Venkman. Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) is also Venkman's "secretary and chief advisor."

The team is brought back together after several incidents occur that involve a “Class-5 Cross-Dimensional Snatcher.”

"Remember “Tobin’s Spirit Guide”? It’s the book referenced in the first Ghostbusters while they were researching Zuul. Here Ray uses it to conclude that the slender man spirit is WOLFRAM VON GRAUEN, one of the head architects of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Hundreds of people vanished during the fair, possibly sacrificed in the basement of a building Von Grauen owned. The vile man was eventually thrown in an insane asylum on Staten Island. His belongings were auctioned off by the police and now his spirit is being drawn to them.
"Amazed that Ray and Egon figured it out so soon while Todd sat on his ass doing nothing about it, Venkman ousts Todd from his CEO position and reinstates Ray and Egon. What follows is a montage aimed at pushing the fans’ nostalgia buttons. A lot of imagery from the first two films appears, including a polished off Ecto-1. Ray even lets Slimer out of the containment unit, leading to a heartwarming and gooey reunion."

They even fire all of the current Ghostbusters, except for Oscar, and then bring in three new recruits. Their mission is to retrieve "Von Grauen’s cursed items." While they are doing this, Von Grauen's power summons a giant octopus-like creature from the ocean, which is referred to as an "Elder God." This leads to the final act of the story.

"The epic final battle sees the national guard, NYPD, recently fired employees of Ghosbusters, Inc., and the guys all blowing away at the immense creature. The NYC skies are lit up with gunfire and proton beams. They manage to slow the behemoth down, but the only way to stop it…you guessed it.

"They have to cross the streams. Knowing that it could kill them, Venkman makes the first selfless act he’s made in years and takes Oscar’s place. Even that bastard Todd steps up to lay his life down for the city. They manage to lure the creature to a prime spot near a skyscraper. There, the guys take one final sentimental look at one another and light it up. A bright white super beam plows into the creature and his guts and bile rain down on the city. They’ve slain the beast and saved the city once again. Only this time it cost them their lives.

"Cut to an undisclosed time in the near future. Ghostbusters, Inc. is going stronger than ever, with Winston in a high-paying position. Oscar is still working there as well. One night, Janine is working late and as she’s walking down the hall, she comes across the ghosts of Venkman, Ray, and Egon playing cards…"

So there it is. You can read the full detailed breakdown here. Do you think this would have made a good Ghostbusters sequel?

Magical Trailer for Disney's Live-Action CINDERELLA

magical-trailer-for-disneys-live-action-cinderella

Disney has released the full trailer for director Kenneth Branagh's live action adaptation of the classic fairy tale Cinderella. If you've enjoyed the other live-action adaptations that Disney has made, then you'll like what you see here. It actually looks like it's going to be a really good movie, which makes sense because it was brought to life by Branagh, who is a great director. One of the more popular films that he has made in recent years is Marvel's Thor. Cinderella has an awesome look, and it looks like it sticks pretty closely to the classic story that we all know and love.

The story of Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella's father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind." She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella's hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward and -- armed with a pumpkin and a few mice -- changes Cinderella's life forever.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on March 13th, 2015.

The Fantastic Mr. Foxcatcher Mashup Trailer

You’ve got to check out this great fan-made trailer that mashes together Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox and the upcoming Steve Carrell dramatic thriller, Foxcatcher. It’s called "The Fantastic Mr. Foxcatcher," and it was created by Youtube user Jonathan Hartwig. The result turned out pretty damn funny. Here's the caption that came along with the video:

Wes Anderson has truly outdone himself. See the true story of Olympic Wrestling Champion Mark Schultz who decides to get justice after schizophrenic John duPont killed his brother, Olympic Champion Dave.

I saw Foxcatcher last weekend, and it was a really great film. The acting from Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum especially was incredible. It was such an intense story, and the audio from it really gives a very different, tense vibe to The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

New Concept Art from Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR

new-concept-art-from-pixars-the-good-dinosaur

Disney has released a piece of new concept art for Pixar’s prehistoric animated adventure, The Good Dinosaur. It gives us a good look at the two main characters in the story: Arlo the apatosaurus dino and his young human companion, Spot.

The Good Dinosaur asks the generations-old question: What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? The film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event rattles Arlo’s tranquil community, he sets out on a quest to restore peace, gaining an unlikely companion along the way—a young human boy named Spot.

The film features the voice talents of Lucas Neff, John Lithgow, Frances McDormand, Bill Hader, and Neil Patrick Harris. I had the opportunity to see some fantastically fun footage from the film at D23, and you can read more details from the film here.

The Good Dinosaur hits theaters on November 25th, 2015.

The Royal Batman Art by Ahmed Rawi

Check out this stunning illustration created by concept artist Ahmed Rawi. He calls it "The Royal Batman," and as you can see, it features the Caped Crusader in a suit of shiny, royal, medieval armor. This isn't the first time that we've seen Batman reimagined in the medieval era, but it's definitely one of the more badass character designs that I've seen. You can see a couple other pieces of art here and here.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE - Actors Up for Young Jean Grey and Cyclops

0
0

Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse is going introduce fans to a younger version of Jean Grey and Cyclops. The characters were previously portrayed by Famke Janssen and James Marsden. It wouldn’t make sense for them to reprise their roles, though, because the story for the upcoming sequel is set in the 1980s.

According to The Wrap the studio, is looking at casting either Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Elle Fanning (Super 8) or Hailee Steinfeld (Ender’s Game) as a young Jean Grey. As for the part of Cyclops, they are looking at Ben Hardy (EastEnders), Charlie Rowe (Red Band Society), and Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar). The news comes from multiple sources close to the production at 20th Century Fox.

An insider confirmed that both Moretz and Fanning have met with Singer recently, but there are other up-and-coming actresses still in the mix. No official test offers have been made yet, but I imagine they’ll happen soon.

These are all great, talented young actors, and if I had to choose from the bunch it would have to be Steinfeld for Grey and Rowe for Cyclops. They both just seem to have more of the look of the characters. So that, along with their talent, make them solid candidates.

It was recently revealed that one of the main focuses of X-Men: Apocalypse will be the romantic relationship between Magneto and Mystique, which will put stars Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence at the center of attention.

The film will also center around the villain Apocalypse, and it will involve some Ancient Mutants. The movie is set to be released on May 27th, 2016.

It has been twenty years since The Shawshank Redemption was released in theaters. It wasn't really a box office success, but over the years it has become a movie that is beloved by people all over the world. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and in celebration of it's 20th anniversary,The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences hosted a special screening and cast reunion at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

After the movie ended, writer and director Frank Darabont and stars Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins took the stage to discuss the movie and tell stories about the production. The panel was moderated by Max Brooks, and you can watch a part of their conversation below. If you're a fan of this movie, then you've got to take the time to check this out.

Chris Pratt Cast in COWBOY NINJA VIKING

chris-pratt-cast-in-cowboy-ninja-viking

Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt has joined a very cool film project called Cowboy Ninja Viking! The movie is based n a comic book, and it was first announced back in 2010 when Disney picked it up and hired the writers of Zombieland, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, to tackle the script. A couple years later Universal Pictures picked up the rights to the comic and hired Marc Forster (World War Z) to direct it. He's no longer attached to the project, though.

chris-pratt-cast-in-cowboy-ninja-viking1

The comic was created by writer A.J. Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo, and it's seriously going to make for a fun movie. The name of the main character in the story is Duncan, and he comes from a secret government program that turn schizophrenics into assassins. Duncan comes through the program with the badass skill sets and personalities of a cowboy, a ninja, and a freakin' viking. Most of the patients that are involved in the program are sent back to an insane asylum, but Duncan escapes and uses his skills to track down the billionaire who masterminded the program.

The news comes from Collider, who offers up some additional details on the film:

"We’re told that per the latest draft of the script, the three different personalities (the Cowboy, the Ninja, and the Viking) physically manifest onscreen as three different people when Duncan switches personas, but to onlookers he still just looks like Duncan."

This is going to be such a fun movie for Pratt to be a part of, and his comedic talents are definitely going to shine in it. I'm really excited to see the actor take on this character. This movie is going to be awesome!
