STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS — How Someone Guessed The Title in 2012

0
0

The title for the seventh Star Wars film was announced yesterday that title being Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Something is missing that's not obvious: it's the words "Episode VII." The use of the episode numbers was a prominent part of the marketing of the prequel films. With at least one more trilogy and possibly countless spinoff films, it looks like Disney and LucasFilm decided drop that whole episode numbering system and return to the naming convention of the original trilogy. I'm all for dropping the episode numbering — it's cleaner.

A lot of readers were mixed on the title with things tipping toward the negative. A few said the title was obvious and a bit unoriginal. ScreenCrush writer Mike Ryan dug through the internet to find the first use of the title Star Wars: The Force Awakens and found that back in December 2012, TheForce.Net forum user Queen Gimmedala correctly guessed the title.

TheForce.Net reached out to Queen Gimmedala to find out how she came up with the title:

“Ultimately this was a random guess. No inside info or connection to Lucas. But to me it seemed logical that the first movie in this trilogy would need to address the force. I’m a believer that the movie titles in each trilogy closely relate and I suspect this will carry over for the [sequel trilogy].
"So I knew it was going to be 3 words, and the force. I also know that the wording would be vague/ambiguous/old fashioned like all the other six movie titles.”

It seems to me that the guidelines Queen Gimmedala used to guess the title are likely the same ones used by the LucasFilm team. Rumors of a teaser trailer have been circling since before Halloween, so it seems like we'll get out first glimpse soon.

Nosferatic Ghoul Crashes 1980s Social Circle in GREEN EYED - Short Film

nosferatic-ghoul-crashes-1980s-social-circle-in-green-eyed-short-film

I've got a phat 1980s set comedy short for you to check out called "Green Eyed." The film comes from director Nathaniel Lindsay, and the story is set in the Summer of 1980. It follows a successful yuppie who "faces an existential crisis when a nosferatic ghoul joins his social circle and undermines his social status." The movie is radically bizarre and entertaining. It also has a very stylish and classic 80s feel to it. I should point out that the humor is dry, like the kind of stuff you might see in a Wes Anderson film. It takes a certain kind of person to find the humor in a movie like this funny, so I know it's not for everybody. But at least give it a shot, because it's pretty great. I really enjoyed it. Thanks to the director for sending this in to me!

New Details Revealed for TOY STORY 4

new-details-revealed-for-toy-story-4

When I jumped online this morning, the Internet was flooded with all kinds of fan speculation about what Pixar's recently announced Toy Story 4 would be about. One of them included the addition of The Avengers. We now have some new official details to report on the film, though, straight from the mouth of Disney's chief creative officer and Toy Story 4 director, John Lasseter.

In an interview with LA Times, Lasseter revealed Toy Story 4 will be a love story and that it will start at the point where Toy Story 3 left off, when Woody, Buzz and the rest of the toy gang were given to a little girl named Bonnie. I'm sure the love story will be between two of the toy characters... but who? He doesn't give away any specifics, but he does talk about why they are moving forward with this fourth film in the franchise:

"A lot of people in the industry view us doing sequels as being for the business of it, but for us it's pure passion. We only make sequels when we have a story that's as good as or better than the original.

"We don't just, because of the success of a film, automatically say we're going to do a sequel and then figure out what we're going to do."

I have to say that wasn't true for Cars 2. That sequel was worse than the first movie. They made that sequel so that they could sell more merchandise.

According to the report, Lasseter came up with the idea during a lunch meeting that he held in his office with Pixar directors and creative executives Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich. Over the last couple of years Lasseter and Stanton wrote a story treatment, and after seeing the 2012 comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever, they brought in Rashida Jones and Will McCormack to help write the script. On why he brought them on board, Lasseter says,

"They have such a great sense of character and originality, and I wanted to get a strong female voice in the writing of this."

Lasseter may be the chief creative officer at Disney, but his heart is still in directing, which if why he decided to talk on the project. He explains,

"One of the things that was very important for me as an artist is to continue directing. When I direct, I get to work with the individual artists, with the animators. It's very important to keep young talent coming into the studios ... to get back in and help tell stories."

It will be fun to see these characters up on the big screen again, but I'll be surprised if they can outdo that original trilogy of films. It was just such a perfect story. Are you excited that Pixar is moving forward with Toy Story 4?

If you want a little something to pull on your heart strings, here's an incredibly touching Christmas ad about a boy, his penguin friend, and the magic of love. This thing seriously made me swell with happiness, and I'm so happy right now it's ridiculous! It also features a beautiful cover of The Beatles' song, "Real Love," which was performed by Tom Odell

The ad is for the UK department store chain John Lewis, and the penguin character in the video is named Monty. The store has released a children’s book and an app for iOS and Android that are set in Monty's world. Enjoy the video, and I hope it brings a little happiness into your day as well.

New Trailer for the Slapstick Comedy PADDINGTON

The Weinstein Company has released an amusing US trailer for their upcoming family comedy film Paddington, which is based on the 1958 British children's book series created by Michael Bond. I don't remember the last time I saw a movie with fun slapstick style comedy. The first thing to pop into my head is Mr. Bean. This film follows the silly adventures of a bear, who is making an attempt to live in modern society.

Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) provides the voice of Paddington. The movie was produced by David Heyman of the Harry Potter franchise and directed by Paul King. Here's the synopsis:

Paddington tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear who travels to the city in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says 'Please look after this bear. Thank you,' and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

The entertaining looking film also stars Hugh Bonneville, Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, Michael Gambon, and Imelda Staunton. It will be released on January 16th, 2015.

Mini BACK TO THE FUTURE Flux Capacitor with Animated Light Effects

If you want a Back To The Future flux capacitor, you've only had two options, build one yourself, or buy the USB car charger (btw very cool). But what about one that you could take with you? The team at Mad Geek Collectibles have created a Kickstarter project for a 1:10 scale replica that can be converted into a keychain.

Because this is an officially licensed product, Mad Geek Collectibles were able to get Bob Gale, Back to the Future co-creator involved with one of the perks, which has already sold out. Gale had this to say about the mini flux capacitor:

“Great Scott! This is the perfect key ring for all BTTF fans, and now I can actually say, ‘where did I put my flux capacitor?’”

This flux capacitor is the most accurate and purchasable replica I've seen. The standard edition is made from a die-cast alloy and a limited edition stainless steel version is also available. There is a button on the back that starts the flux and pressing it a second time will start the time travel effect. The standard edition is available for $28 and the limited quantity stainless steel version is $48. Both editions are expected to ship 2nd quarter 2015, just in time for the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future.

Poster for Sylvester Stallone and Ian McKellen's Animated Film ANIMAL CRACKERS

Yep, there's a CG animated movie coming out called Animal Crackers, which is based on the classic kids snack food. I think it hilarious that Hollywood is now moving in the direction of adapting food into movies. I think the Peeps feature was the last one to be announced.

Animal Crackers will feature the voices of Sylvester Stallone, Ian McKellen, Danny DeVitoPatrick Warburton, Gilbert Gottfried, Raven-Symoné, and Harvey Fierstein. This is the synopsis that was released:

Animal Crackers follows a family whose life is turned upside down when they inherit a rundown circus and a mysterious box of Animal Crackers, which magically change the person who eats them into the animal they have eaten — including monkeys, giraffes, lions, tigers and bears.

I guess that's the way to go for a movie like this. I guess there's a chance it could be a fun flick to watch. The project is on track for a Summer 2016 release.

Mark Zuckerberg Says THE SOCIAL NETWORK Film Was "Hurtful"

mark-zuckerberg-says-the-social-network-film-was-hurtful

It's been awhile since David Fincher's The Social Network came out, but it was recently brought up in a Q&A with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg that The Verge was attending. When talking about the movie he admitted that he "kind of found it hurtful." Yes, believe it or not, even the incredibly rich people of the world have feelings too.

When the movie first opened up there were rumors of Zuckerberg being so pissed off about it that he was never going to see it. Of course, he went out to watch it. In fact, he took the whole company along with him.

He has talked about the movie before, but this time around he's a little bit more open about his thoughts and feelings. This is what he said:

I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about this in a while. I kinda blocked that one out. It was a very interesting experience to watch a movie that was supposedly about my life. The reality is that writing code and building a product is not a glamorous enough thing to make a movie about. A lot of the stuff they probably had to embellish and make up. If they were really making a movie, it would’ve just been me at a computer coding for two hours straight. And these people want to make money.

I haven’t met the writer of the movie. I met [Jesse Eisenberg] once. They went out of their way in the movie to try to get some interesting details correct like design of office, but with overarching plot about why we’re building Facebook or how we did it, they just kind of made up a bunch of stuff that I found kind of hurtful. I take our mission really seriously. We’re here not to just build a company, but to help connect the world and help people connect to people they love. The thing that I found most interesting about the movie was that they made up this plotline about how I decided to create Facebook to attract girls.

One important piece of context is the woman I’m married to who I’ve been dating for ten years, I was dating her before starting Facebook. If somehow I was trying to create Facebook to find more women, that probably wouldn’t have gone over well in my relationship. There were glaring things made up [for the] movie that made it hard for me to take seriously. But we had some fun with it. We knew everyone at Facebook was gonna want to see it. So we actually took the whole company to go see it the day it came out.

I do find it interesting that he continues to say that he started dating his wife Priscilla Chan before he started Facebook, because it's been revealed that they didn’t start dating until after he hired her to work for Facebook. I guess it doesn't matter.

The thing is, Hollywood always embellishes the "true story" films to make them more interesting. The main priority of Fincher and writer Aaron Sorkin was to make a great movie, which they succeeded in. I could see why Zuckerberg would be hurt by the film's depiction of him though. Hey, he's still more wealthy than everyone involved with making the film combined, so that should make him feel a little better.

ANT-MAN — Potential Photo of Yellowjacket

We know Corey Stoll will be/become Yellowjacket in the upcoming Marvel movie Ant-Man. What we have yet to see in any materials officially released so far is what Yellowjacket will look like. Twitter user MoviesBookIT seems to have snapped a photo off a monitor of what I imagine Yellowjacket would look like. I've embedded the tweet below, so if the photo is gone due to copyright that must mean it's real. Then again, we've posted few leaked things recently that haven't been taken down. Real or not, this photo looks cool.

NOW YOU SEE ME 2 Plot Details and Casting

now-you-see-me-2-plot-details-and-casting

As ridiculous as it was, I really enjoyed Louis Leterrier‘s Now You See Me. The idea of a heist film with magic won me over. Now You See Me 2 is preparing to move into production, and Lionsgate has officially announced the cast and offered up a plot summary.

The movie will reunite the ensemble cast from the first film with three of the four horseman returning, including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco, alongside Mark RuffaloMorgan Freeman, and Michael Caine. Isla Fisher was in the first movie, but her name wasn't on the press release we received. The screenplay was written by Pete Chiarelli and Ed Solomon. Here are the story details:

One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their mind-bending spectacles, the Four Horsemen resurface in NOW YOU SEE ME 2 only to find themselves face to face with a new enemy who enlists them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet.

Michael Caine previously confirmed in an interview that Daniel Radcliffe would also be in the film as his son, and that the story will be set in London. The studio confirmed that Radcliffe is in the movie along with Lizzy Caplan (Showtime’s Master of Sex) and Jay Chou (The Green Hornet).

Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is directing the movie, which is set to be released on June 10th, 2016. I'm not the biggest fan of Chu's work, but maybe this will be a project that works to his strengths. I loved the first film, so I'm hoping the sequel will at least be just as good.

MASS EFFECT: Tali'Zorah Statue Deserves a Place on Your Shelf

Tali'Zorah is one of your most steadfast allies in the Mass Effect series, so it's much to my delight that Gaming Heads decided to make her the third in their series of statues based on the franchise. Coming in at 19" tall, the detail on Tali's armor and accessories is extensive, and I couldn't be happier with how this turned out. The regular edition comes with her easily identified arc pistol, but the exclusive version gets you a swappable Scorpion pistol to boot. Props on the pose as well, with just the right amount of "Just give me a reason." You can put in your pre-order now for $339.99, or break it up into three payments, so make sure to head on over to their site if you're interested. Check out some additional photos down below.

Trailer for the Documentary DARK STAR: H.R. GIGER's WORLD

0
0
trailer-for-the-documentary-dark-star-hr-gigers-world

The trailer for an upcoming documentary called Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World has been released. H.R. Giger was a legendary artist that made a huge impact on movies and the sci-fi genre. This is the man who designed the unique look of Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien. His style of design and art was insane, dark, wild, and awesome. Giger passed away in May, but the legacy that he left behind will live on.

The documentary was directed by Belinda Sallin, and it was filmed over the last years of his life. It promises an inside look into the fantastically bizarre world of one of the most talented artists of the modern era. Here's a lengthy synopsis for the documentary that will give you a solid idea of what to expect:

Where others flee, he makes his home. What others dread, he makes his habitat. What others fight to suppress, he drags back to the surface. Throughout his life, HR Giger inhabited the world of the uncanny: a dark universe on the brink of many an abyss.

He did not create this world because he held it dear, but rather because he had no other option. It was the only way this amiable, modest and humorous man was able to keep his fears in check. Giger was merely the bearer of dark messages, charting our nightmares, drafting maps of our subconscious and moulding our primal fears.

HR Giger lived in the heart of Zurich in a virtually self-contained, parallel world. It is a separate universe with a dark star, the “Dark Star” HR Giger at the centre, and everything else revolving around him. In this space, plucked out of time and behind closed shutters, day blurs into night. Only his family, closest friends and a few assistants are privy to his realm, and they have their work cut out for them. The growing number of exhibitions in important European art galleries are testament to the return of Giger’s art to the established art world.

The extent to which Giger stands between the genres manifests itself within the art world. Due to his depth-psychological, unsettling motifs he’s automatically placed in the categories of Surrealism and Fantastic Realism, yet his proximity to pop culture is undeniable – he always made use of its tools such as film, comics, advertising and design – and undermined it with his pessimism.
He turned advertising-consumer-department store aesthetics on its head, transforming it into its antithesis. Giger’s messages are apocalyptic and mysterious. They stand in direct contradiction to the megalomaniacal fantasies of our era, and his monsters ultimately force us to take a good look in the mirror.

In the last year of his life, Giger rarely ventured out into the other world. Tired and exhausted, he slowly withdrew from the public sphere and looked back at his life, which was packed with surprises, cruel twists of fate and great achievements, not least of which was ?? of which he was winning? winning an Oscar for Alien.

In the film, Giger reminisces about holding a skull in his hands for the first time as a 6-year-old boy, as if it were only yesterday. It was a gift from his father, who was the town chemist in Chur. The boy managed to overcome a fear for the first time, and he demonstrated this by tying a string to the skull and dragging it behind him through the alleys of his hometown: It was a formative experience, and that skull is the foundation of his world. A world in which the insignia, horrors and mysteries of death should remain omnipresent.

At the age of 73, Hansruedi Giger regarded his oldest skull with gratitude, almost affection. It was his impetus, he said. The impetus to embark on a lifelong journey into the depths and nuances of every kind of darkness. A journey that would soon come to an end, he added calmly. He’d lived long enough. It was almost as if he anticipated his rapidly approaching death. Hansruedi Giger died a short time later in May of 2014, at the age of 74.

This doc looks fascinating, and one I'll definitely be checking out.

Next week, Iam8bit in Los Angeles will open an art show called SEQUEL, which features art for fictional movie sequels. I may have to attend the exhibit to explore art for sequels that I hope will one day be released, and sequels I pray never get made. A sampling of the art that will be featured at the show has been released, and there are some really well crafted pieces here that may have you saying, “Well, I guess a sequel to that wouldn’t be thaaat bad.” In fact, some of these concepts would actually be fantastic! While only Hellboy 3 and Blade Runner 2 are pretty much the only ones here with any sort of legs, I'd totally be interested in seeing a Labyrinth 2 or Rocketeer 2, a.k.a. the only films where Jennifer Connelly probably wouldn't have to play Russell Crowe’s wife.

The SEQUEL art show kicks off on November 13th and will run through November 23rd.

STARCRAFT II: LEGACY OF THE VOID — Cinematic Trailer and 3 Videos of Multiplayer Changes

0
0

I've been a fan of Starcraft ever since I first played it back in 1998. My cousin had the game and let me check it out. In what felt like a blink, about eight hours went by. Since then I've been hooked on the series and RTS's in general. Starcraft II has its final expansion and a closing to its trilogy in Legacy of the Void. This Protoss focused story looks like it could be the last we see of Starcraft for sometime. Between Starcraft: Brood War and Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty there was about a 12 year gap.

During BlizzCon, Blizzard Entertainment released the first cinematic trailer for Starcraft: Legacy of the Void. The trailer is amazing and full of a foreboding doom.

Blizzard also released three videos that show off new unit types and changes to old ones. The videos display how these news things effect multiplayer and the increased micromanagement potentials.

You can sign-up for the multiplayer beta on Battle.net. No release date has been announced but I imagine it'll be released in the next 12 months (broad guess).

Too Many Cooks - Fake TV Show Has the Longest and Most Bizarre Opening Credits

0
0

If you’ve seen this [adult swim] video called “Too Many Cooks” making the rounds on the Internet today but haven’t actually watched it yet, you need to right now. It’s a life-changing experience. No, seriously. What makes this even more hilarious is the fact that it aired to unsuspecting viewers during the network's infomercial block.

The video, which comes from director Casper Kelly, starts off simple enough as a scarily accurate parody the opening credits of late ‘80s/early ‘90s sitcoms. Right around minute 3, though, they start jumping television eras and genres and things start to escalate and implode very quickly. At about the halfway mark it becomes an exercise in patience more than anything else. With just enough thrills and laughs to keep you from clicking away, you’re stuck watching the entire 11-and-a-half minute video. Watching this is basically like going on a roller coaster ride: It starts off great. Then you get a little scared. Then it becomes fun again. Then you hear someone puke, which actually makes you laugh. Then some of that puke starts flying towards your face. Then the rest of the ride is spent being hurled around while that vomit is slowly inching its way towards your mouth... or at least that sums up my experience.

Buckle up and watch this video. The gauntlet has been thrown down.
