First TV Spot for HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 - Old Friends, New Enemies

0
0

I have been thoroughly impressed with how drastically different each trailer for Horrible Bosses 2 has been. The teaser, the feature trailer, and the main trailer each focused on different aspects of the movie, and all feature different gags that make them worth checking out if you’re looking for a taste of what’s in store for the sequel. The first TV spot has been released, and while it features mostly familiar footage from the trailers, it does contain a couple of new bits with Jason Bateman and Charlie Day’s former bosses, played by Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston.

The movie also sees the return of Jason Sudeikis and Jamie Foxx, with Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz rounding out the cast. It actually looks like they’ve put together a worthwhile follow up, not just a lazy rehash of old gags (*cough* Hangover 2!), so I’ll definitely be checking this one out when it hits theaters November 26th.

Lens Flare Supercut Makes a Case for the Derided Effect

0
0

Remember when Disney announced that J.J. Abrams would direct Star Wars: Episode VII and all of Twitter lit up with lens flare jokes? (Not me. I made a Felicity joke.) Jacob T. Swinney thinks that (possible) overuse of the camera effect has led to an unfair devaluation of the camera effect. He writes,

Lens flares seem to catch a bad rap. While some are simply a stylistic element (and some are even mistakes), there are plenty of thoughtful and symbolic uses of light scattering through the lens. Here is a compilation showcasing the many different types and uses of lens flares in a variety of films.

To prove that, he has made this compilation of purposeful, thoughtful lens flares throughout cinematic history. Or actually, mostly recent films with a few older ones thrown in for cred. Still, he makes a compelling case. Abrams even makes the list. The supercut is set to "Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor)" by John Murphy, and it’s worth a watch. I’ve included the full list of featured films below the video.

Cool Teaser Poster for Alex Garland's Sci-Fi Film EX MACHINA

cool-teaser-poster-for-alex-garlands-sci-fi-film-ex-machina1

Alex Garland, the screenwriter of films such as Sunshine, 28 Days Later, Never Let me Go, and Dredd, has directed his first feature film that he also wrote. It's called Ex Machina, and it's a sci-fi thriller that stars Oscar Isaac and Domhall Gleeson. Today we have a great new teaser poster for you to check out below. The film is described as a stylish and cerebral thriller. Here's the synopsis for the seriously cool sounding film:

Caleb Smith (Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-‐search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated, seductive––and more deceptive–– than the two men could have imagined.

I can't wait to see a trailer for this thing just to get a glimpse at what is actually in store for us. The film was just picked up for distribution by A24, and they are looking to release it on April 10th, 2015. The production company released a statement saying:

“Alex Garland is already one of the most brilliant and distinctive writers working today. Ex Machina marks the beginning of an exciting new step for Alex the director, and we are thrilled to help bring his provocative vision to US audiences."

There's no doubt that the script for this movie will be solid, the guy has written one great film after another. His directing skills have yet to be seen, but he has worked with the likes of Danny Boyle and Mark Romanek, so I'm sure he's learned a few things along the way. This has the potential to be a great flick.

Updated With Marvel's Phase 3 – Upcoming Superhero Movies 6 Years and Beyond Infographic

0
0

Just one week ago, we posted an infographic from Comic Alliance that showed which superhero movies we had to look forward to into 2020 and beyond. But yesterday Marvel official announced their phase 3 films, making the previous infographic inaccurate. Thankfully, graphic artist Dylan Todd updated it and now we have a more solid picture of the movies we will be watching for the next 6 years.

A few things of note:

  • 2016 and 2018 each have 7 films, but 2017 has an insane amount with 10.
  • The average ticket price in Los Angeles is $13.50. If tickets prices hold for the next 6 years (yeah right), it will cost me $526.50 to watch all 39 movies. This doesn't consider inflation, rising ticket prices, 3D, or IMAX screening.
  • If the average budget for these films is $170 million, it will cost at least $6.6 billion dollars to make all 39 movies. This does not factor in the larger movies like The Avengers or The Justice League or the marketing costs, which can be substantial.
  • Marvel Studios made $7 billion from 10 films. If averages hold that would be $11 billion in box office. Which would be enough to bank roll the production and marketing of all the superhero movies of FOX, Sony, and Warner Bros. combined.

At some point, the superhero box office bubble will pop. But until then we have a lot great movies to look forward to.

Michael Bay in Talks to Direct Benghazi Movie 13 HOURS

michael-bay-in-talks-to-direct-benghazi-movie-13-housrs

It looks like Transformers director Michael Bay is looking to change things up by possibly directing a political drama. The director is currently in negotiations to direct a film called 13 Hours, which will be an adaptation of a book by Mitchell Zuckoff. It chronicles the events of the attack at the U.S. State Department Special Mission Compound in Benghazi on September 11th, 2012.

The script was written by Chuck Hogan (The Strain), and it focuses on six members of a security team that valiantly fought to defend the many Americans stationed on the compound. They only partially succeeded because U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was killed along with a foreign service worker in one attack. Then, during a second assault at a CIA station nearby, two contract workers were killed.

This seems like it would be a very different film for Bay story wise, but he's obviously going to have a lot of action and explosions to play with when bringing the story to life. Sources say that the movie would be budgeted in the $30 to $40 million range, which is a lot less than those $200 million plus budgets on his Transformers films. 13 Hours will be an intense movie, and it will most likely be better than those Transformers flicks.

Funny Or Die has released an amusing Game of Thrones Halloween comedy sketch for your viewing enjoyment. It features the men of the Night's Watch preparing for the most epic Halloween that Westeros has ever seen. The Night's Watch is a military order made up of outcast nobles and fatherless sons, and a member is giving his men the ultimate battle speech before they head out on their Halloween adventure. The movie should really hit home with anyone who knows someone that takes this holiday to the absolute extreme… like me!

The short was written by Funny or Die regular Luke Barnett, who also stars in the video. It was directed by Vincent Masciale, who is behind several other sketches on the site. I hope you enjoy their latest creation!

We've got the first fascinating trailer for Alex Garland's upcoming sci-fi thriller, Ex Machina. Garland is the writer who gave us the incredible genre films Sunshine and 28 Days Later. He's an incredibly talented writer, and he makes his directorial debut with Ex Machina. This movie has a great cast that includes Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson, and the story it tells looks incredibly awesome and intense. Here's the synopsis:

Caleb Smith (Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Isaac). First INTERSTELLAR Clip - "Useless Machines"

0
0

Paramount Pictures has released the first clip from Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller Interstellar. The clip isn't from the space exploration aspect of the film, but it does give us a better idea of the kind of world that Nolan has created for the story, which is a world where the Apollo space missions are believed to have been faked to help bankrupt the Soviet Union. Matthew McConaughey isn't too happy about that being taught in schools.

When it comes to the moon landings being faked, Time put it perfectly when they said:

"Of all of the conspiracy loonies currently at large — birthers, truthers and grassy-knollers, we’re looking at you — there are none quite as febrile as the folks who claim the Apollo moon landings were faked. The theory (with apologies to the word “theory”) presumes that all of the 400,000 people directly or indirectly involved in the moon landings schemed in perfect secrecy to pull off the greatest scam in history, and have maintained their silence for more than two generations since the lunar program ended in 1972. It would be easier just to go to the flipping moon."

Interstellar chronicles "the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage." It comes out on November 5th! To read some of the first reviews of the highly anticipated film, click here. Thanks to Time for the clip.

Hardcore Live-Action Short Film - HOTLINE MIAMI 2: "DO YOU LIKE TO HURT PEOPLE"

Hardcore Live-Action Short Film - HOTLINE MIAMI 2: "DO YOU LIKE TO HURT PEOPLE"

Machinima Prime  has released a hardcore live-action short film based on the hit video game Hotline Miami. The film is called "Hotline Miami 2: 'Do You Like to Hurt People'" and the story follows a murderous vigilante in an animal mask as he embarks on a bloody rampage through a seedy and neon-lit Miami drug den on New Year's Eve. It a really well-made and violent short. I should warn you that it's probably NSFW. Here's the synopsis:

It's the 1st annual anniversary of the Hotline massacres in Miami Florida and crime has already begun to resurface. Unbeknownst to a local drug and prostitution syndicate a team of copy cat killers have taken up the mask and plan on separating some gangster blood from body.

I just don't see how anyone could be that effective at fighting and killing while wearing a animal mask that is sure to limit a person's vision. This guy must be incredibly skilled, and maybe he's been training blindfolded. Enjoy the film!

New TERMINATOR: GENISYS Photos with Yelling and Shooting

new-terminator-genisys-photos-with-yelling-and-shooting

Yesterday we got our first official look at director Alan Taylor's Terminator: Genisys thanks to the covers of EW. Today we have five new photos for you to check out. The first is a group shot that features Jason Clarke as John Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, and Matt Smith as an undisclosed soldier character. The other four images below include all the characters yelling and shooting off their weapons. I especially like how Courtney and Clarke aren't even shooting in the direction that they are looking. We still have yet to see an official picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his iconic role.

There were also some story details released for the film yesterday as well that got a lot of mixed reactions from fans. It seemed to confuse some people. I actually liked the ideas that were presented, and it doesn't hurt that James Cameron helped steer the story in the right direction. Here's the description:

Terminator: Genisys starts in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

One of the other cool details that I really like is that in this version of the story Sarah Connor was actually raised by a Terminator, an aging T-800 played by Schwarzenegger. This cyborg was programmed to protect her instead of kill her. Cameron previously explained how this is all possible:

"I pointed out that the outer covering (of the Terminator) was actually not synthetic, that it was organic and therefore could age. You could theoretically have a Terminator that was sent back in time, missed his target, and ended up just kind of living on in society. Because he is a learning computer and has a brain as a central processor he could actually become more human as he went along without getting discovered."

Of course, there's a chance that this movie could suck, but there's also a chance that it could be awesome. I'm hoping for the latter.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Trailer with Pee-wee Herman Voice-Over

avengers-age-of-ultron-trailer-with-pee-wee-herman-voice-over

Paul Reubens was recently a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and he offered up his Pee-wee Herman talents to provide a voiceover for part of the trailer for Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron. The result is as funny and goofy as you'd expect it to be. I wish they would have had him voice over the whole trailer, but I'll take what I can get. Pee-wee should do a web series of movie trailer voiceovers!

Zack Snyder Possibly Hints at the DC Cineverse Getting the Blue Beetle

0
0

Zack Snyder called into a radio station recently to defend Aquaman. Now he's called in again to talk about the production's departure from Detroit. Stoney and Bill co-host Sarah asked Snyder in jest what characters they might play in an upcoming DC movie.

Snyder at the 7 minute, 35 second mark:

"As we add to the Justice League we bring in some of the more obscure, like Blue Beetle or something"

Keep in mind that last time he called in about Aquaman the casting of Jason Momoa went official a few days later. It's possible Snyder is dropping a new hit of something in development. As the DC cineverse expands to compete with Marvel's onslaught of films, the Blue Beetle would be a fan favorite addition.

This could be a lot of wishful thinking or it could possibly be a small hint of things to come.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Dark Knight, the Toledo East Coast Hockey League team is holding a “Heroes Night” on November 22nd. That game will include a face-off between the Toledo Walleye and the Evansville IceMen hockey teams while wearing Batman and Riddler uniforms inspired by the classic 1960s TV costumes. The IceMen will dress as The Riddler, even though Mr. Freeze would have been a more appropriate choice, and the Walleye will suit up as Batman.

After the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off, and the proceeds will go to a benefit supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association, March of Dimes, and the Walleye Wishing Well. There's a limited number of replica Batman jerseys that will be available on November 3rd at the Walleye’s store.

The SyFy Channel has released an extended trailer for their great looking new series, 12 Monkeys, which is based on director Terry Gilliam's classic sci-fi time travel film. The show stars Aaron Standford (X2: X-Men United) as Cole, who was previously played by Bruce Willis.

The story follows the character as he travels from 2043 to the present day so that he can locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will all but annihilate the human race. While on his mission he teams up with Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull) as well as a female mental patient named Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire), which is a character loosely based on the character played by Brad Pitt. Here's a more detailed synopsis:

12 Monkeys follows the journey of a time traveler, Cole, from the post-apocalyptic future. Using a dangerous and untested method of time travel, Cole arrives in the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate 93.6% of the human race. Will Cole be able to save the fate of mankind or is mankind bound by fate? Taking place in the ravaged future of 2043 and the present day (2015), 12 Monkeys explores themes of destiny, fate, love and the possibility of second chances.

The series is set to make its premiere on Friday, January 16th of 2015 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

THE GOONIES Playing Cards are Now Available

the-goonies-playing-cards-are-now-available

Earlier this year, a Kickstarter was launched to create a deck of playing cards inspired by Steven Spielberg's The Goonies. They reached their goal, and now the playing cards are available for purchase! The cards are available on FireBox for only $21.00. This is a great collectors item for anyone who is a fan of The Goonies. The cards include art by Nat Iwata, and the characters include Chunk, Mikey, One-Eyed Willie, Mouth, Sloth, Mama and the rest of the gang. Here's the description they released with the announcement.

"Hey you guys!"

Three decades have passed since Sloth garbled out those fabled words, yet The Goonies still remains one of the most-loved movies of all time – they just don't make children's adventure films like they used to.

So what better way to immortalise these timeless characters than on this intricately designed deck of playing cards. Mouth, Chunk, Mikey, One-eyed Willie – they're all there and beautifully illustrated by renowned internet artist, Nat Iwata.

Such is the inextinguishable love for this cult classic that it smashed its Kickstarter target in just one day! Where the hell was "crowd-funding" when the Goon Docks was facing demolition eh?

I think I might just have to get myself a couple of decks!

TERMINATOR: GENISYS - Photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Villain Teased

0

first-official-look-at-arnold-schwarzenneger-in-terminator-genisys

We finally have our first official look at Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800 Terminator in Terminator: Genisys. The guy looks as badass as ever, especially with him in that leather jacket wielding a shotgun. We also have a new behind the scenes photo of a Terminator endoskeleton. In an interview with EW, the cast and crew talk about the film. Emile Clarke was asked about Sarah Connor being raised by a Terminator, to which she replied,

“Oh, she’s just a normal girl growing up in a world with a Terminator for a dad (laughs). What was her first date like? Did he kill many of the dates she brought home?”

I think that's a really interesting concept that could play out well. Producer David Ellison goes on to talk about Skynet's role in the story and how it may have evolved saying,

“Skynet no longer has to break down our front door because we line up in front of Apple stores to invite it in. We’re constantly giving away our privacy.”

It will be interesting to see how they implement that idea into the story. It was also revealed that we will see a younger model version of Schwarzenegger as the Terminator in the film. The filmmakers have re-created "the memorable scene in the original Terminator when the T-800 lands at L.A.’s Griffith Observatory, complete with Schwarzenegger’s 36-year-old face and ripped, naked body."

The report goes on to explain that they achieved this by creating a “synthespian,” or synthetic thespian, which is a state-of-the-art special effects tool that utilizes a body double and a scan of Schwarzenegger's face from the first film, merged with what his face looks like now. Ellison says,

“It’s the holy grail of visual effects. You create a walking, breathing human that doesn’t exist.”

Isn't that what they did in Terminator: Salvation? Only it was really poorly done. Hopefully they do a better job with those effects this next time around. Director Alan Taylor then teased what the main villain in the movie will be. It's described as a man/machine hybrid, and it's supposed to be a visual game changer.

“Part of the challenge is to dazzle people with something they haven’t seen before. There are elements in our main villain that are straining the capacities of our brilliant visual-effects people. So that’s a good sign.”

I can't wait to see what they came up with for this villainous character. The movie is set to be released on July 1st, 2015, and I'm hoping for the best. To see the previously released photos for the film click here

Mysterious Park Chan-wook Short Film with Jack Huston - A ROSE REBORN

Park Chan-wook, the director of films such as Oldboy, Thirst, and Stoker, has created a short film for the Italian fashion company Ermenegildo Zegna and Stefano Pilati. It's called "A Rose Reborn," and it stars Jack Huston from Boardwalk Empire and Daniel WuThe story follows a young CEO who travels to meet a Chinese investor. Along the way he encounters a number of riddles and other strange transactions before they come to a deal. The film is wonderfully mysterious and there's a lot of great little subtleties that I enjoyed. Here's the synopsis:

A brilliant young CEO from London contemplates the possibility of selling his invention to a mysterious Chinese billionaire. Before actually meeting his potential investor however our protagonist must face a number of challenges in the form of journeys, riddles and the exchange of clothes.

This is a must watch short, so when you have the time to check it out, please check it out.

New AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Clip Hints at Future Captain America and Tony Stark Feud

0
0

A hero to us all somehow managed to record a previously unreleased clip from Avengers: Age of Ultron that was shown at the Marvel event on Tuesday. Marvel takes the security of their content really really seriously. They had security guards with night vision scopes at the Comic-Con panel for their animated Spider-Man show on Disney XD, which surely is of less interest than this. The cynical side of me wonders if this is a deliberate leak, but maybe our anonymous pirate is just very intrepid.

The video shows a conversation between Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) about visions shown to them by Scarlet Witch, leading to a fight that maybe presages the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. The quality isn't great because it was filmed on the sly, but it's still a tantalizing tease that makes me wonder if some of the more apocalyptic scenes from the trailer are Scarlet Witch induced visions.

15 Amazingly Creepy Horror Movie Musical Scores

0
0

As you know, music plays a huge part in the filmmaking process and plays with our emotions while we are watching the movie. Music heightens our senses and adds to the quality of film. When it comes to horror movies, the music is supposed to scare us, make us feel uneasy, and gives us moments of panic and fear. Director Martin Scorsese said the following about music and film:

“Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.”

Just the other day the main theme song from Halloween started playing on the radio, and it freaked my kids out to the point that they were in tears. It was sad but kind of funny at the same time. Anyway, it got me to thinking about what the scariest horror movie soundtracks created over the years have been, so I put together a list of fifteen that I think do their horror movie job well. These are all scores that still make chills go down my spine when I hear them.

Look through my choices below, listen to them if you want, and let us know if there's anything that you would add to the list.

The Omen

Theomen768681111qq

Composed by Jerry Goldsmith

He won an Academy Award for his work on the film in 1977. Director Richard Donner credits the success of the film to Goldsmith's score, which made the film scarier than it would have been without him.

The Shining

Composed by Chuck Cirino

Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind wrote and performed a full electronic score for this movie, but Stanley Kubrick threw most of it out and used a different soundtrack. Only the adaptation of the "Dies Irae" melody during the opening credits during the family's drive to the hotel and a few other brief moments made it to the final version.

Halloween

Composed by director John Carpenter

It took the director four days to complete the score.

The Exorcist

Composed by Mike Oldfield

The movie was originally scored by Lalo Schifrin, but his score was rejected because it was the exact opposite of what director William Friedkin wanted. He wanted music that would inspire chills and a feeling of dread in the audience.

Susperia

Composed by the rock band Goblin

Director Dario Argento composed the eerie music with the band and played it at full blast on set of the film to unnerve the actors and provoke a truly scared performance.

Jaws

Composed by John Williams

When Williams first played the score for director Steven Spielberg, Spielberg laughed and said, "That's funny, John, really. But what did you really have in mind for the theme of Jaws?" The director later stated that without Williams's score, the movie would only have been half as successful.

Psycho

Composed by Bernard Herrmann

Alfred Hitchcock originally wanted the shower sequence to be completely silent, but Herrmann scored it anyway, and when the director heard it, he changed his mind.

Session 9

Composed by the Climax Golden Twins

Director Brad Anderson was inspired to use the Danvers Mental Hospital as he drove past it every day.

Trick 'R Treat

Composed by Douglas Pipes

You can read ten fun facts about this film that I wrote up here.

Silent Hill

Composed by Akira Yamaoka

Other than "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash, every piece of music used in the movie is taken directly from the game series. Smart choice.

The Amityville Horror

Composed by Lalo Schifrin

There was a rumor that the music in this film is the rejected score that Schifrin originally composed for The Exorcist, but that's not true. The rejected Exorcist score has been released, and it's completely different.

Drag Me to Hell

Composed by Christopher Young

The composer of the musical score can be briefly seen eating a cupcake outside the bakery Christine looks into on her way to her work at the beginning of the film.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Composed by Charles Bernstein

Many extended scenes, which were lifted from the work print, appeared on the 1996 Anchor Bay Special Edition release. Bernstein had not yet composed the iconic score for the film, so these scenes include preexisting temporary music taken from other sources.

Bram Stoker's Dracula

Composed by Wojciech Kilar

The main title music was inspired by the music of James Bernard, the composer of many of the Hammer Film horror productions from the late '50s, '60s, and early '70s, particularly the Christopher Lee Dracula films.

Insidious

Composed by Joseph Bishara

When the Insidious logo flashes on the screen in the movie you can clearly see the letters 'DIO' highlighted, which means God in Latin.
