Do You Worship at the Altar of The Doctor?

$

We’ve posted about PBS’s Idea Channel before, but I just came across this old video that posits that if you call yourself a Whovian, you just might be an acolyte of a religious order. That will likely come as a surprise, but hear him out, he kind of has a point. And really, as far as religions go, one that only requires an hour of worship on about twelve Saturdays a year is a pretty sweet deal. In fact, if we run with this and push for an official church, all our Doctor Who gear purchases could be tax deductible. This is sounding better and better. We could even have official Who holidays. I'm guessing David Tennant's birthday would be our version of Christmas. November 21st is our Yom Kippur.

Warning: The video is spoiler free, unless you’ve never heard of regeneration.

James Cameron on His Big Contribution to TERMINATOR GENISYS

A few months ago, Terminator creator and mastermind James Cameron revealed that he was loosely attached to the upcoming Terminator Genisys film. It was just an advisory role for him, but it seems like he played a decent sized role in developing the story that we are going to see unfold. In a recent interview with Deadline he reveals what what his big and awesome contribution was.

"I wasn’t interested in producing it or working on it actively, but I did want to put in a good word for Arnold. I pointed out that the outer covering (of the Terminator) was actually not synthetic, that it was organic and therefore could age. You could theoretically have a Terminator that was sent back in time, missed his target, and ended up just kind of living on in society. Because he is a learning computer and has a brain as a central processor he could actually become more human as he went along without getting discovered."

That's such a damn cool concept, and it explains how Schwarzenegger comes back as an older cyborg. In a separate interview with Empire, the director talks about why he's not worried about this new Terminator movie.

"It’s not my problem! It’s like being a grandparent, the kids come over and you can send them back! When I walked away from the franchise, I had to do it with the sense that I can invest in emotion. To me, it’s all upside, because if it’s good, it’s good for Arnold [Schwarzenegger], my friend Laeta [Kalogridis] and if it’s not good? It doesn’t bother me personally."

He does say that he hopes it will turn out to be a great film, though.

"I’m hoping it’s great. I’d like them to get it right, and based on the script that I read there’s a pretty good chance that it could. It looks like it could be fun."

As a fan of this franchise, that's encouraging to hear. That statement actually boosts my excitement for the movie a little bit. On another note, there's a chance that one day the rights to the Terminator franchise will revert back to Cameron, and if that happens, the director isn't counting out the opportunity to come back and reinvent the franchise. Here's what he had to says:

"I haven’t really thought that far ahead yet. I’ve got plenty of time to think about it. It might be fun to completely re-invent the franchise. A lot has to do with what happens with it in the meantime, people may have Terminator fatigue."

As long as Cameron is the one making the Terminator films I won't have "Terminator fatigue." Terminator: Genisys stars Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Jason Clarke as John Connor, Dayo Okeniyi as Danny Dyson, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who returns as T-800. The movie also includes Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s Byung-hun Lee. The film will be released in theaters on July 1st, 2015.

If Creators Met Their Characters Now — Comic by Dorkly

When you’ve released something you’ve created, in a way it no longer belongs to you (unless you’re Bill Watterson, he's got Calvin and Hobbes on lockdown). It can be strange to see something you created evolve into something completely different that you would have never dreamed up. As a songwriter, I’ve heard some pretty wild interpretations from fans about the stories and meanings behind songs I've written. I can only imagine what it would feel like for the creators of comic book characters, whose creations are constantly being updated and reinvented by other people.

Batman and Superman celebrated their 75th anniversaries in the last couple years, and have both gone through countless and very different iterations since their debuts. They and other iconic comic book characters meet their makers in this comic by Dorkly’s Tony Wilson, and the creators have some pretty choice words for the modern day versions of their creations.

Microsoft and Xbox Entertainment have released a featurette that give us our first look at their upcoming Halo: Nightfall digital feature. Not only does it include a behind-the-scenes look at the film, but it also features some actual footage that looks really cool, as well as a brief look at the video game Halo 5: Guardians.

Halo: Nightfall stars Mike Colter as Jameson Locke, "a surgically-enhanced super soldier who is a rising star in a futuristic Spartan army and troubled by the military industrial complex he inhabits." The film is set between the events of Halo 4 and the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians, in which the character Locke will play an integral role.

Sergio Mimica-Gezzan is directing the project from a script written by Prison Break series creator Paul Scheuring. This is the Halo project that is being produced by Ridley Scott and David Zucker.

The film is in addition to the live-action series that Steven Spielberg is producing for Xbox One. Halo: Nightfall is included as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and will be accessible digitally on Xbox Live beginning on November 11th, 2014.

Here's an incredibly fun video of Sir Ian McKellan giving a horde of young students a little advice as Gandalf. He is encouraging a group of kids gathering outside of a school library to study, and says if that if they don't, "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" I'm sorry, but hearing McKellan say that will never ever get old for me. I love the reaction of the kids when he does it too. I wish I was at the right place at the right time when McKellan was around doing awesome Gandalf quotes!

Marvel Gave Robert Downey Jr. Giant AVENGERS Logo Prop

At the end of Joss Whedon's The Avengers, after the Battle for New York the only part of the "Stark" logo that remained at the top of Stark Tower was the giant "A" that serves as the Avengers emblem. Well, according to Robert Downey Jr., Marvel game him that giant prop. It's not uncommon for actors to take take home props from the films they work on. Downey Jr. also owns some of the Iron Man helmets used in the movies that he has been in. He may not own a full suit, but now he has a 30-foot Avengers logo to put in his office. The actor told the story of how this all came about in an interview with BBC Radio 1 (via: ComicBook.com).

"On the last Avengers, there's this scene where there's this 'A' which is probably 30 feet tall and I'm looking at it, and we're shooting in England, and I go, 'I need that in my office in Venice.'
"About two weeks ago, a wheeler showed up, I'm like, 'What the heck is this doing here?!' And they go, 'This is the 'A' you asked for.' And I go, 'They brought it?!' So now we have a massive Avengers 'A' that will be prominently placed."

I'm sure he just jokingly said he wanted it, but I guess whatever Downey Jr. wants, he gets. I guess it benefits both parties, because now it isn't taking up space in the studio storage facility. It's probably not that big of a sacrifice for Marvel. If they didn't give it to the actor, they probably would have thrown it away eventually.

Pixar's THE GOOD DINOSAUR — Video Confirming Peter Sohn as Director

The Good Dinosaur was originally intended for a summer 2014 release, but due to changes in story and director, it was pushed back to November 25, 2015. It's been nearly a year since we've posted any updates, the last thing being a poster.

A tweet from the official Disney•Pixar twitter account presents Peter Sohn as its director drawing the main character Arlo. Also seen on the wall at the end of the video is the character Spot, a human boy who is unafraid of dinosaurs.

My guess is the overall concept for The Good Dinosaur is still in tact, but the story has changed enough that it warranted pushing back the release date. I'm pretty confident the Pixar story process will give us a great movie.

Zombie Concept Art for THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD

Here's a great series of concept art for the 1985 cult horror film The Return of the Living Dead. The early pre-production art features various zombie characters from the movie. These were done by illustrator William Stout, and the art served as a basis for creating the makeup and effects for the movie. If you haven't seen this film yet, you should give it a go. It's actually a really fun and entertaining horror comedy. Here's a brief plot summary:

When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.

I also included the trailer for the movie. Thanks to Stan Winston School of Character Arts for the art.

Why We Haven't Seen Anything from the FANTASTIC FOUR Movie

Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot finished shooting awhile back, but we have barely seen anything from the film. This is incredibly surprising, especially when we see stuff from Batman v Superman and Star Wars: Episode VII leaking almost every day. Fox must actually threaten to kill people if they leak anything. I got banned from Facebook for three days because of a set photo of Thing that I posted. I'm really curious to see what Trank and the studio have done with this classic Marvel superhero team.

In a recent interview with producer Simon Kinberg, we learn the reason why we haven't seen anything official yet. This is what he said to ComicBook.com:

"We’re putting it together now, and one of the important things, because this Fantastic Four is a reboot, and is such a different tonality and vibe from those other films, we want to make sure that the first thing we put out really expresses the voice of the movie, and isn’t compromised by not having visual effects ready, or anything like that."

When asked when we would actually get to see something from the movie he didn't offer any helpful information, but he did say that it's a very different kind of superhero movie.

"I don’t actually know when it’s coming out, but I’ve seen all the footage from the movie. I was there for pretty much the whole shoot. It is a very different film from the others, and one that I think is very different from other superhero movies. It’s a very emotional, character-driven, more grounded film than I think people are anticipating."

I know a lot of fans aren't too excited about this movie, but I'm hoping that it will blow us away. I want to see a great Fantastic Four film, and why couldn't this be it? It has a great director and a talented young cast of actors that include Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell. They may have changed up the origin story, but maybe it will work better for the story that they are going to tell this time around. I don't know. I'm just trying to be optimistic. I really want this movie to be great. You can read more about the story here

Fantastic Four is set to hit screens on June 19th, 2015, and I hope we get to see something from it soon.

A new Army of Darkness comic book was announced recently by Dynamite Entertainment, and today we have our first look at some of the artwork from in Army of Darkness #1. The pieces you see here are the cover art and some interior pages of the first issue that were dreamed up by artist Larry Watts. As you can see, the new story takes Ash into space! Here are some additional details:

Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces that its flagship title and longest-running comic book series, Army of Darkness, will launch with a brand new #1 issue in December. Cullen Bunn, the celebrated writer of Deadpool, will take iconic horror hero Ash Williams somewhere he has never been before: outer space. Longtime franchise fans are invited to strap themselves in for the bold new direction.

Looks like fun! Now Sam Raimi just needs to make that sequel he has been working on. Thanks to Bleeding Cool for the heads up.

Darth Vader Sneak Peek in STAR WARS REBELS: SPARK OF REBELLION

A short promo was released for ABC's alternate version of Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion. The spot gives us out first look at some footage of Darth Vader, and we get to hear his iconic heavy breathing. We posted an image of Vader not too long ago, but seeing it in motion is a lot better. It has me really excited to see Darth Vader back in the Star Wars universe! Especially since the great James Earl Jones provided the voice for him in the series. I'm not sure how much more of Vader we will see in this alternate version of the TV movie, but I'm sure his powerful presence will be felt. Vader is the guy pulling the strings behind-the-scenes in the series. He's working directly with the main villain, The Inquisitor, who is hunting down and killing any remaining Jedi Knights. The Spark of Rebellion is set to air on ABC on October 26th.

Upcoming Superhero Movies 6 Years and Beyond — Infographic

Graphic artist Dylan Todd (in collaboration with Comics Alliance) has created "Supermovies," an infographic that gives a helpful look at all known superhero movies coming out over the next six years and beyond. All the dates are referenced in detail at Comics Alliance.

2015 looks pretty bare compared to the coming years, but it has some large non superhero movies scheduled, including Star Wars: Episode VII, Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, Tomorrowland, James Bond #24, Fast and Furious 7, Inside Out, Terminator: Genisys, Pan, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Mission: Impossible 5, The Good Dinosaur, and The Hateful Eight. So don't worry, even without a full slate of superhero films, next year is going to be an insane year of movies.

BIG HERO 6 Stars and Directors Talk About How the Story Developed

$

Big Hero 6 is getting closer to release every day, and I cannot wait for you guys to see it. I saw it last week and then sat in on roundtable discussions with the directors and members of the cast. They spoke candidly about the process of making the film.

Scott Adsit, who voices Baymax, was asked about the changes their characters went through in development. He replied,

“I don’t think their relationship changed that much. I think it became more central as the process went on and became more of the heart of the film. I think originally it was part of the film, but the focus was more on the superhero team and its formation and all that. And I think after they started recording and restorying everything we took more of a center stage.”

Ryan Potter, the voice of Hiro, added, “They changed the relationships of certain characters around, and when they did, it made the story that much more impactful. I wish I could tell you what it is, maybe John will say it one day…” Adsit asked him, “Are you talking about Maya?” and Potter replied, “Yeah Maya’s character, and um, the way they changed her relationship to Hiro, it makes Baymax’s relationship that much more important to Hiro, and Hiro’s relationship to Baymax that much more important when they lose Tadashi.”

Maya Rudolph plays Hiro and Tadashi’s aunt and guardian. She has raised them since their parents died when Hiro was three. I am guessing that she was initially their mom (or possibly their sister, but probably their mom), but since Potter didn’t tell us, that is mere guesswork. While Adsit didn’t see much change in Hiro and Baymax’s relationship, the story went through a lot of changes. Director Don Hall explained,

It was a difficult one to crack from a story perspective because we knew we had an abundance of wealth and that comes with the challenge of making it all play together thematically and cohesively, in a 90 minute, which is relatively short, you know, we don’t have a two hour movie to do subplots and all that kind of stuff, and so we had to make choices and that was a lot of our the challenge was trying to get the idea— The stake in the ground was this was going to be a movie about a kid 14 year old super genius who loses his older brother. We’re going to deal with it head on, directly and not pull punches, and that the brother’s robot was going to be an agent of healing for this kid. It was going to take him on this journey of dealing with this loss and especially the idea that acceptance comes when you realize that those who pass on live on through you. So that was the spine. The difficulty is that you also have a superhero origin story. And so how do you make those things play together?

He goes on to answer his own rhetorical question, but I’m not going to give you that quite yet. It’s not exactly a spoiler, but I think sometimes it’s better to go into a movie knowing less. Director Chris Williams gave a couple of concrete examples of changes that had been made and storylines that had been cast aside.

“There was a point earlier on, years ago now, where there was more emphasis on following the villain and his plot, and that ultimately didn’t serve the emotional storyline, the main story between Hiro and Baymax and then the team, and so that was jettisoned but yeah, we’re constantly changing things. There was a point when the wind turbine scene that follows the first flight scene where it’s Hiro and Baymax up on the turbine used to have the entire team up there.”

Adsit also let slip that the filmmakers barely made their deadline, “John Lasseter [Chief Creative Officer of Pixar, Disney Animation, and DisneyToons] had a very nice dinner and cocktail party screening here in this building [the Disney Animation building].” Potter interjected, “It was the first one they did,” and Adsit said, “Yeah, the cast and some of the crew about two hours after they completed the film.”

When the filmmakers were asked about it, Hall said, “Yeah, they kind of ripped it out of our hands.” Williams cut in, “Yeah, we’re tired. [Laughs] Yeah, we really just finished the movie. It was always going to be an ambitious, emotionally complex, plotwise more complex than most animated movies. It was huge in scope, and so it was always going to be an ambitious one, and we will take every opportunity to make the movie better. And so we’re always pushing the schedule back further and further and further, and I think we found the outer limit of what’s possible… That’s just a credit to a team that wants to do whatever they can to make the movie better.”

Whatever they could was more than enough. We'll publish a full review soon, but Big Hero 6 is going to be a Disney classic, I promise.

Big Hero 6 is a heartfelt comedy adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a cutting-edge robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Big Hero 6 is directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt), and produced by Roy Conli (Tangled). The film hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.

This will actually be the very first tape that they will have released since 2003.

You will be able to purchase one of these tapes between November 17th and December 31st at independent retailers. The website Record Store Day will help you find your local participating store. The tape features all twelve songs from the soundtrack, with six tracks on each side. Neil Gaiman Explains Why SANDMAN Wasn't in the DC Movie Line-up

neil-gaiman-explains-why-sandman-wasnt-in-the-dc-movie-line-up

When Warner Bros. announced their DC superhero line-up, some fans, including myself, wondered why there were a couple titles missing. Those titles included Neil Gaiman and Joseph Gordon Levitt's Sandman project, and Guillermo del Toro's Justice League Dark. We know both of these properties have been in development, so why were they absent from the announcement? Gaiman was asked on Tumblr what the deal was in regards to Sandman, and this is the answer he gave:

"It’s not a DC Comics film. It’s a Vertigo film. That’s a different slate of films, and a different announcement."

Vertigo Comics is a branch-off of DC, and it features comic series that are specifically creator-oriented, and are mature in theme and content. They also deal more with supernatural type stories. What Gaiman's statement tells me is that Sandman is going to be a standalone film that will not cross over with the rest of the DC cinematic universe. Del Toro's Justice League Dark would also fall into this category, so there's still a chance that movie will happen, it just will fall under that Vertigo banner that Gaiman mentioned.

I would love for both of these projects to pan out, because chances are they will actually end up being better movies than the full slate of DC film that have been officially announced.

Brilliantly Funny A CLOCKWORK ORANGE Parody from THE SIMPSONS

Every Halloween The Simpsons releases a new horror-themed "Treehouse of Horror" special, and this year's episode that aired on Sunday was one of the best that I've seen in years. One of the main reasons for that was because of one of the segments, titled "A Clockwork Yellow," which was a hilarious parody of Stanley Kubrick's classic insane film A Clockwork Orange. In the process, it turns into a Kubrick film free-for-all! They start throwing in all kinds of awesome stuff from the films the director made throughout his career. The segment is brilliantly executed.

In the story, Moe, Homer, Lenny, and Carl take on the roles of as Alex and his droogs from A Clockwork Orange. It also uses dialogue, settings, shots, and music from the film to deliver the comedy, and it just gets really weird in the greatest possible ways. I've included a video tease of the segment below, andif you have Hulu Plus you can watch the full episode, "Treehouse of Horror XXV," which I also embedded for you. It will be available for everyone else to watch for free on October 27th. If you haven't seen this yet, enjoy!

"Everyone has a choice Katniss, and I would rather die than say what he just said".

Lionsagate has released a new TV spot for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 called "Choice," and it was released in a cross-promotion with Doritos. This is a pretty powerful spot, and it also offers a good amount of new footage that should help pump up the fans. I've enjoyed the films in this francnhise so far, and I imagine these final two movies will at least be just as entertaining.

This next chapter in the story finds "Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage."

The movie will be released in theaters on November 21st.

A digitally restored edition of Stanley Kubrick's classic sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey is set to premiere in the UK on November 28th at the British Film Institute’s "Sci-Fi: Days of Fears and Wonder" season. In anticipation of the event, a new official trailer has been released that was commissioned by the BFI and Warner Bros. This is the first new trailer for the movie that has been released in forty years

The trailer was cut together by Ignition Creative London, and as you'll see it uses Hal as the central figure to create an intense and eerie experience. A statement was released by Jan Harlan, Kubrick’s executive producer who described this as “the best trailer for this film I have ever seen! To use Hal’s voice is brilliant."

I love this movie, and it's one of those classics that I still haven't seen on the big screen. Hopefully one day we get to see this digitally restored print play here in the states — preferably Los Angeles because that's where I live.

James Wan Set to Direct THE CONJURING 2

james-wan-set-to-direct-the-conjuring-2

I am happy to report that director James Wan will be returning to The Conjuring horror franchise! He's officially set to direct The Conjuring 2 for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. I was really hoping that he would come back to direct the sequel. He's so good at directing horror movies, and the first film was absolutely terrifying. I'm now fully excited for the sequel that is coming to us.

The Conjuring 2 was originally supposed to be released on October 23rd, 2015, but the studio moved it to 2016 so that Wan had time to promote his Fast & Furious 7 movie. Wan also signed on with New Line to "develop and produce modest budget films in the science fiction, horror, and comedy genres through his Atomic Monster production banner." Wan is one of my favorite directors working today. I love his filmmaking and storytelling style, and I'm looking forward to see what other films he brings us under this new deal. New Line president/COO Toby Emmerich had this to say in a statement:

“We had a great experience with James onThe Conjuring, and we give him a lot of credit for that movie working so well. He worked on the screenplay and came to the table with very inventive things that were not in the script and cast it fantastically well. Add to that his work in producing Annabelle, and he is one of the masters of the genre and we’re happy to have him. You go through the list of possible directors of The Conjuring sequel, and his is the name you stop at, which is why we tried so hard to make this work.”

Wan Added:

“It was during the editing of Fast & Furious 7 that my brain started sparking ideas for The Conjuring sequel. Taking a break from horror has allowed me to be creatively rejuvenated. I’m excited to tell the story of the next case-file of Ed & Lorraine Warren and expand on this world we’ve created.”

Last year a report surfaced giving us a possible storyline for the movie involving two possessed sisters in England. You can read more about this creepy story here. There's no information on if this is actually the story they will use, but it would make for a good movie. Regardless, whatever Wan gives us, I'm confident that it will be great.
