BIG HERO 6 – New International Trailer

$

Disney has released a new trailer for Big Hero 6 in Portuguese. It's peppered with extended bits we've seen in other trailers and unseen footage at the end. My toddler is super excited to see this movie, and I can't wait to take him.

Plot Summary:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes "Big Hero 6," an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.
Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the CG-animated "Big Hero 6" hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.

Hot Toys Wolverine Action Figure from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Hot Toys has revealed their 1/6 scale collectible action figure of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine from X-Men: Days of Future Past. As you would expect from Hot Toys, the detail is immaculate, especially in the costume. There's actually one thing I don't like about it, though… the face. When you see it in these action poses it doesn't really work. The facial expression needs to be fiercer, with the look of berserker rage. That would have taken this figure to a whole new level. Here's the description:

The X-Men has returned onto the big screen earlier this year with the critically-acclaimed and highly-popular X-Men: Days of Future Past! With the mutant race being exterminated by powerful Sentinels in the future, Wolverine was sent back to the past in order to stop the war before it began and save his kind from the terrible fate.

To celebrate the launch of this hit movie’s DVD and Blu-Ray, Hot Toys is delighted to present the new 1/6th scale Wolverine Collectible Figure from X-Men: Days of Future Past. The movie-accurate collectible is specially crafted based on the image of Hugh Jackman as the future Wolverine in the movie featuring a newly developed head sculpt, specially-tailored future Wolverine battle suit with armor parts and Wolverine’s signature metal claws.

TREMORS 5 Is Coming and Michael Gross Is Back!

I've got some awesome news for all you Tremors fans out there! Tremors 5 is in development, and weapons enthusiast Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) will be back to take on some more deadly graboids. Only this time his adventure will take place in South Africa.

The news come from Bloody Disgusting, who says that the film not only includes the classic graboid creatures and the Ass Blasters, but a brand new creature will be introduced as well. Here's the synopsis that was released:

"The theatrical release of the original Tremors in 1990 combined suspense-filled action, sci-fi imagination and witty humor in the tale of a tiny Nevada town terrorized by giant man-eating worms known as Graboids. The Graboids eventually morphed into even more deadly creatures known as Ass Blasters. In this all-new adventure that travels halfway around the world to South Africa, the Graboids and the Ass Blasters are not only bigger and badder but Tremors 5 introduces an additional unexpected surprise that raises the stakes in the battle for survival."

I've been a big fan of this franchise since the first movie, which starred Kevin Bacon. Who would have thought that there would have been five Tremors films over the years. Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment said in a statement,

“The Tremors franchise has built a reputation for high intensity fun and suspense and this installment takes it to a whole new level.”

The movie also stars Jamie Kennedy (Scream) as Burt's new right hand man, tech-savvy Travis. Tremors 5 will be released on Blu-ray Hi-Def, DVD and Digital HD in 2016, and I can't wait!

GAME OF THRONES Star Maisie Williams on THE LAST OF US and New Superhero Project

Maisie Williams' Game of Thrones character Arya Stark has become a fan favorite. Williams is a very talented young actress, and she was one of the most celebrated actors to appear at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year. The fans just went crazy for her every time she took the stage for a panel. She is looking to expand her career beyond Game of Thrones, and one of the first big projects that her name has been loosely attached to is the Sam Raimi-produced adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us

In a recent interview with Flicks in the City, she talks about the possibility of playing Ellie in The Last of Us, as well as a new superhero project that she likens to Kick-Ass. First up, here's what she had to say about the Raimi-produced movie:

"I had a lunch a little while ago and we spoke about the possibility of me playing Ellie. That’s really exciting and I would absolutely love to. It kind of all came about on Twitter a long time ago. The power of Twitter still never ceases to amaze me. I went to a lunch and we spoke a little bit about it, and then they announced at Comic-Con that we had spoken about it, and since then in like every interview people have been asking me about it. Honestly I would love to and I think they would love me to play Ellie also, and that’s where it is at the moment. There’s no script, no director, it’s still very early days for the whole project, but if it all goes ahead soon enough I think, yeah, I would love to."

In this next part of the discussion she talks about the mystery superhero project saying:

"There’s not much I can talk about, but there’s actually been a very exciting project and a very exciting group of people who have approached me about a new series. I can’t say the title, I’m not saying anything about it, but it’s in that sort of superhero vein, in the same vein as Kick-Ass where the superhero is not super and just has great intentions. That would not be happening yet, it would be happening in a few years, but something that we’ve been in talks about for a little while and I’m really, really, really excited about it… it was going to originally be written as a graphic novel, it’s not based on anything. It was kind of inspired just from walking around Comic-Con and seeing so many woman dressed as all these sexualized female superheroes and just thinking if I was a superhero, I would just want to wear a hoodie and jeans, and taking that and making it into a superhero that isn’t wearing spandex and isn’t a sexy Catwoman or that sort of thing."

It sounds like this is an original project she has a heavy hand in developing, and it sounds intriguing. Williams has a very long and successful career ahead of her, and it will be cool to see what she does next outside of Game of Thrones

29 Disney Animal Characters As Anime Humans by Chaico

No one creates anthropomorphic animals better than Disney. Artist Chaico takes beloved Disney animal characters and pushes things even further by making them human. Chaico's anime style is an additional twist on characters we know. I do wish more of these were in color and that The Jungle Book animals were adapted. But the artist is always adding more so maybe my wish will be granted.

The First Name of STAR WARS Villain Emperor Palpatine Finally Revealed

$

Ever since his introduction in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, we've only known the puppet-master villain as Emperor Palpatine, Senator, Chancellor,  and his Sith title Darth Sidious. I've never really thought of the guy having a first name because why would an Emperor or Sith need a first name? Well, he does and it was revealed in the upcoming Star Wars novel Tarkin, which was written by James Luceno. That name has now leaked out on a Wookieepedia update on Palpatine stating that the new name is listed on page 93 of Tarkin. They must have got themselves an advance copy.

So I'm sure you're all dying to know what it is! His name is…. Sheev.

Sheev Palpatine?! That's kind of anti-climatic don't you think? There is really nothing menacing about the name Sheev. I guess it's not the most ridiculous name in the Star Wars universe, I was just expecting a name that might strike fear into the hearts of Jedi. No wonder he took on the Sith name Darth Sidious!

What do you think of the name Sheev? Will anyone be naming their kids this anytime soon?

5 Things You Can Do That Old-School Super Mario Can’t

There are a lot of amazing things that Mario can do. He can jump extremely high, run really fast, and break stacks of bricks with his fist. The most impressive thing about him, though, is the fact that he can hold down a relationship with a princess on a plumber’s salary. He’s gotta be packing some serious heat under those overalls, and I’m not talking about fireballs… wow, that came out so wrong. Super strength and mustachioed studliness aside, if you take Mario from the original Super Mario Bros. NES game and place him in the real world, he’d have some serious physical limitations. 5 of those things he can’t do are explored in this amusing video from Warialasky. These are the same guys that brought us the Super Mario Bros. parkour video that went viral last year.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Almost a Different Ending

One of the greatest things about The Blair Witch Project was its simplicity. There were no big special effects and there was hardly any blood. The finale of the film simply featured a guy standing in the corner of a basement, and it was the most terrifying thing ever. I remember when I first saw the film the chills that it sent down my spine were intense. It was brilliantly effective filmmaking.

It's kind of funny to hear now that when Artisan Entertainment got a hold of the movie back in the late 1990s, the first thing that they wanted to change was that ending, which would have been a terrible mistake! During an interview with Bloody Disgusting at Denver’s Mile High Horror Film Festival, Blair Witch directors Dan Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez revealed what all went down. The article doesn't specify who said the following, but here's what thy revealed:

“Well, we wanted to show something more spectacular than what we ended up with. But we couldn’t come up with an idea and we had a limited budget, so it was going to have to be something really clever. We actually didn’t have the ending of the movie when we were filming. We started shooting the movie without the ending and I remember Gregg (Hale), our producer, would come in and be like, ‘Man, you got five days,’ and we would go back and think about it.

"…but we didn’t want to betray the rest of the movie. There are no real gags in the movie, we weren’t showing anything, you know, except a bundle of sticks and some teeth. And then maybe two or three days before we had to shoot the ending we came up with the idea…Artisan wanted to change it when they bought the movie. That was the first thing they wanted to do was change the ending."

They didn't specify what the studio wanted to change about it, but I'm glad they didn't. It's just an example of how the studio executives swoop in on movies like this to change things around. I imagine that if the ending was changed, they would have thrown some kind of cheesy looking Blair Witch character at the audience. We recently posted a video essay showing how The Blair Witch Project changed movies. In case you missed that you can watch it here

I included a clip of the ending of the movie.

Riveting Sci-Fi Short Film - SIMILO

A year ago we shared a trailer with you for a short sci-fi film called "Similo." The full 23-minute short is now available online for you to watch, and it's really freakin' beautiful. The short was directed by Miguel de Olaso and Bruno Zacarías, and they did an incredible job telling this story. Everything about it was was executed in a nearly perfect way… the cinematography, acting, setting, designs, and even the ending, which is where so many of these films go wrong. Here's the synopsis:

2065. The polar ice caps have melted. The entire planet is hit by the effects of climate change. One of the few places that remain habitable is Antarctica, where big corporations have built private cities.
Hebe and Ciro get back together again. She is looking for love. He is searching for his own identity.

The film does contain nudity so it's NSFW, but I definitely suggest you check it out when you get a chance. I really hope that you like this one.

Trailer for Nicolas Cage's Espionage Thriller DYING OF THE LIGHT

I would like to see Nicolas Cage make a good movie again, and this may or may not be it. The poor guy has been on a downward spiral, making lots of really bad movies lately. We now have a trailer for an espionage thriller that he stars in called Dying of the Light. It was written and directed by Paul Schrader, who is the writer of classic films such as Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.

At first glance it seems as though he brought over some of that talent for this and made a great movie, but the main talent involved with the feature are currently protesting it, including the director. Here's a statement from the director, who also posted a poster with himself, Cage, Anton Yelchin, and producer Nicolas Winding Refn protesting the film. Here's a note from the director on why they are doing this:

We lost the battle. Dying of the Light, a film I wrote and directed, was taken away from me, redited[sic], scored and mixed without my imput[sic]. Yesterday Grindstone (a division of Lionsgate) released the poster and the trailer. They are available on line[sic]. Here we are, Nick Cage, Anton Yelchin, Nic Refn and myself, wearing our “non-disparagement” T shirts. The non-disparagement clause in an artist’s contract gives the owners of the film the right to sue the artist should the owner deem anything the artist has said about the film to be “derogatory.” I have no comment on the film or others connected with the picture.

That's terrible! I can only imagine how he felt having something like this done to him. Having watched the trailer, this movie seemed like it would be really good. It's just not the full vision of the director that viewers will be watching. Here's the synopsis:

The story follows a character named Evan Lake (Cage), who is an ailing veteran CIA agent that has been ordered to retire. Then when his protégé (Anton Yelchin) "uncovers evidence that Lake's nemesis, the terrorist Banir (Alexander Karim), has resurfaced, Lake goes rogue, embarking on a perilous, intercontinental mission to eliminate his sworn enemy."

Lionsgate plans on releasing the cloak and dagger type film on December 5th.

Hey Hollywood, Please Don't Soften Up Badass Characters!

$
0
0

I went and saw Universal Pictures' Dracula Untold last weekend, and not only was I extremely disappointed in the story and script, but their portrayal of Dracula was absurd. Dracula is a badass character, he's suppose to be a very scary dude, and even the real life person that he's based on, Vlad, is just as terrifying, maybe even more so! That is a man that should be feared. Unfortunately, the people who made Dracula Untold removed all of that from this character. They made him a soft heroic person that absolutely does not strike fear in the hearts of men. Dracula is supposed to be a villain. The furthest they should take him away from that would be to make him an anti-hero, but they didn't even play with that notion. I will say that Luke Evans played the part fantastically! It was just the way that the character was portrayed that was wrong. Had Evan played a sinister Dracula, he probably would have been even better.

This is supposed to be the start of a Universal Monster cinematic universe, and now I'm afraid the rest of the movies the studio plans on making — Wolfman, Mummy, Frankenstein, and others — are going to be extremely lackluster. After seeing this film, there's no excitement for me to see the others. These Universal monsters are supposed to be scary, but the 1930s version of Dracula was way creepier than the character we saw in Untold. Just for comparison sake, Francis Ford Coppola's version of the monster played by Gary Oldman was absolutely terrifying.

Hollywood has been on this PG-13 kick. The reason for this is the studio accountants. They are the people that really run Hollywood and decide the fates of the movies that studios make. There's this belief that PG-13 movies will make more money because it expands the audience scope. In the process of doing that though they sacrifice character elements. There have recently been reports of Deadpool and Terminator: Genisys being PG-13 films. Anyone that knows these franchises knows that they should be rated 'R'. To make those ratings, filmmakers will have to sacrifice attributes of these characters that make them edgy. What's interesting about this is that last weekend David Fincher's rated-R movie Gone Girl beat Universal's PG-13 Dracula Untold at the box office.

I just don't want to see a trend of seeing classic hardcore characters lack of what made them badass in the first place. RoboCop is another character that lost some of his heat in the remake, and I still don't think Wolverine has reached his full potential. As you may have heard, Sylvester Stallone is currently developing Rambo 5, could you imagine Rambo in a PG-13 movie? Hell, the Wolverine movies that have been made should have been more like those older Rambo films. Stallone recently made a PG-13 Expendables movie, which I think hurt the movie at the box office more than helped. There's always the chance that he could make a PG-13 Rambo film. I hope that's not the case, but with the way studios are running things it seems likely.

Are there any other characters that you can think of who you feel have been toned down for film?

ANT-MAN: Set Photos of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym

Superhero Report tweeted a few photos of Michael Douglas as Hank Pym during the shooting of Ant-Man. Douglas is looking pretty dapper in the vest, rocking sunglasses, and a beard. It’s too bad Douglas will not don the Ant-Man suit. I’m hoping for a flashback in which Hank Pym does, though. With all the drama right before principle photography, I really hope the movie is in capable hands. Ant-Man is is the longest digested project in Marvel's cineverse, lets hope it's worth the wait.

Is Jena Malone Playing Female Robin in BATMAN V SUPERMAN?

$
0
0

The latest rumor surrounding Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is that the film will feature a female Robin a.k.a. Carrie Kelly played by actress Jena Malone. This news comes from a local news station in Detroit Michigan where the film is currently shooting. One of the things they are currently shooting involves Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). You can read more about that here, but click at your own risk because there are spoilers.

WILX-10 News reporter Kirk Montgomery talked with one of the extras at Michigan State University, who said, “I’ve also learned that the character of Robin is now female.” On top of that Malone, who recently appeared in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has been seen on the set of the film sporting a new red hairdo.

Rumors that we would see a female Robin started practically when the movie was first announced because it's loosely based on Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. I could easily see Malone taking on the character of Carrie Kelley, not only acting wise, but she has also worked with Snyder before on the film Sucker Punch. So I wouldn't be surprised if they are working together again. There's been not official confirmation of this, but it's what all signs are pointing too right now.

You know what sucks about that extra who spilled the info? He could faces a $5 million fine because he signed a non-disclosure agreement with Warner Bros. If they find out who he is, well… he shouldn't have talked.

Below you'll find a video of the report thanks to The Wrap, and under that is a recent photo of Malone with her red hair posted on her Instagram page.

Tim Burton's upcoming film Big Eyes looks absolutely fantastic, and today we bring you the first poster for the film featuring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, along with the "Big Eyes" art that made the characters they play famous. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, make sure to check it out here. I think this is going to be the best movie that Burton has made in years. It also stars Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, and Terence Stamp. Here's a brief synopsis:

A drama centered on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane (Adams), her phenomenal success in the 1950s, and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works in the 1960s.

The film is set to be released on December 25th, 2014.

Paul Rudd Helped Adam McKay Rewrite Marvel's ANT-MAN

paul-rudd-helped-adam-mckay-re-write-marvels-ant-man

Adam Mckay was one of the first directors to meet with Marvel about taking the reins on Ant-Man after Edgar Wright left the project. McKay is the writer-director who brought us the hilarious Anchorman movies, and although he did not end up directing Ant-Man, he did rewrite the script. The film's star, Paul Rudd, is actually who brought McKay in, and then he and McKay worked on the script together. McKay recently talked to Collider about Ant-Man, and he shed a little light on how everything went down between him, Rudd, and Marvel. Here's what he said:

[Rudd] called me when Edgar Wright stepped away from the project and told me what was going on. I went and met with Marvel, and I was a little dubious just because I’m friends with Edgar and I didn’t know what the story was, and then when I kind of heard what happened, that Edgar had parted ways, and then I saw their materials, I was like, ‘God this is pretty cool’. Ultimately I didn’t want to jump in as a director, I had too many other projects going and it was too tight, but I thought, ‘You know what, I can rewrite this, and I can do a lot of good by rewriting it.’

About Rudd's writing he said,

I’ve always known Paul Rudd’s a really good writer from improvising with him on set, but I had no idea he was that good—he’s really great with dialogue. So the two of us holed up in hotel rooms on the east and west coast, and I think it was like six to eight weeks we just ground it out and did a giant rewrite of the script. I was really proud of what we did, I really thought we put some amazing stuff in there and built on an already strong script from Edgar Wright and sort of just enhanced some stuff.

He makes it sound like they almost did a complete overhaul of the script, but he went on to reveal that although in the process working on the script they added “a giant action sequence,” there is still "a lot that’s already in there from what Edgar did, there’s a lot of dialogue and character still in there." McKay then discusses what, specifically, they added to the script.

We just shaped the whole thing, we just tried to streamline it, make it cleaner, make it a little bigger, a little more aggressive, make it funnier in places—we just basically did a rewrite. Edgar had a really good script. But we just had a blast, and Rudd was just so much fun to write with. I walked away saying, ‘Hey, you and I gotta write a script together.’

That's pretty awesome. I'm still a little bummed that we won't see Wright's vision of this movie, but in the end I think it's going to be great. Ant-Man is set to be released on July 17th, 2014.

Star Wars Style Drone Racing Videos

What happens when French drone enthusiasts strap on video goggles to pilot their drones through a forest? MADNESS! The footage looks like the Endor forest speeder bike chase in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. I wonder if drone racing will take off as a sport, it seems like it should.

About the race event:

Twenty-four competitors raced their drones through the 150 m (492 ft) course, the field made up of quadcopters and multicopters customized for an optimal balance of speed and agility. Having to contend with obstacles such as trees, rival drones, low-hanging branches and sharp contrasts in lighting, the racers darted through the forest at speeds as high as 50 km/h (31 mph).
Competing in groups of four, the pilots viewed all the action through goggles, which were fed a stream from micro-cameras built into the front of the drones. The race required them to complete three laps, something Pellarin described as quite an achievement given the inherent difficulties in flying drones through thick forest at high speeds.

The footage is just gorgeous and really inspires me to buy a drone, attach a camera to it, strap on some video goggles, and train to become the greatest drone racer in the would.
