A month ago it was reported that Wolf of Wall Street co-star Margot Robbie was in talks to play the lead role in the live-action feature film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. According to Deadline, she is instead likely to join DC Entertainment's Suicide Squad, which we reported on yesterday. Looks like those casting reports are true.
The article goes on to reveal that DreamWorks has now offered the part to Scarlett Johansson with a $10 million dollar payday. There's no word yet on whether she has accepted the offer, but the part is apparently hers for the taking if she wants it. Johansson might just end up being our Motoko, but that name is sure to be changed for American audiences.
A lot of fans of the classic anime are very unhappy with the fact that the studio is casting a white woman to play the role of a Japanese character. But that's just what happens when Hollywood takes a foreign property like Ghost in the Shell and Americanizes it. There's a really good chance that the movie is going to going to suck storywise, especially with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders at the helm. I'm sure the film will look incredible visually, but as you all know, that's not what makes a great film. Eye candy can only go so far. I'm just not expecting the movie to be as good as the anime many of us grew up watching.
As far Johansson possibly joining the film, I'm a huge fan of hers. She's become a very talented actress over the years, and thanks to Lucy and the Marvel films, she has proven that she can kick some major ass. But in my opinion she's not right for the role. She still has a kind of softness to her that doesn't fit the character. But maybe she'll be awesome! I think Robbie is still a better choice, considering the type of actress they are looking for. but that's not going to happen.
As I said before, I understand that there are a ton of very talented Japanese actresses out there who could take on this role, but the studio has a different vision for the franchise than the fans. Unfortunately, that's usually how it goes in this business.
Ghost in the Shell follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. if you haven't scene the original movie yet, then you're missing out on something amazing. What are your thoughts on Johansson possibly joining the movie?
