JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS Movie Has a 2015 Release Date

jem-and-the-holograms-movie-has-a-2015-release-date

Universal Pictures revealed today that director Jon M. Chu's live-action Jem and the Holograms movie will be released on October 23rd, 2015. There's a lot of buzz surrounding this movie, because there's a lot of fans out there who grew up watch the 1980s Hasbro animated series.

The story "centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt -- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father."

The cast for the film includes Nashville actress Aubrey Peeples as the lead character Jem; Disney's A.N.T. Farm's Stefanie Scott as Jem's sister, Kimber; Pretty Little Liars actress Aurora Perrineau will play Shana; and The FostersHayley Kiyoko will take on the role of Aja. Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald also have roles in the movie that haven't been revealed.

Chu is known for directing some Step Up movies, a couple of Justin Bieber documentaries, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. I'm not really a fan of anything that he has done, but this seems like the kind of film that he would do well with.

Most Popular Halloween Costumes of the Last 25 Years - Infographic

most-popular-halloween-costumes-of-the-last-25-years-infographic

Personal Creations has given us an infographic that breaks down the most popular Halloween costumes over the last 25 years. I always went against the grain when dressing up for Halloween when I was growing. I rarely bought my costumes. My dad would go all out and make some really awesome original costumes. I do remember seeing people wearing these costumes though while I was out trick of treating with friends or family. The infographic came with the following note:

Whether you’re 5, 25, or 45, we’re willing to bet that you’ve partaken in the time honored tradition of playing dress-up on Halloween. With the holiday coming up, we thought it would be fun to reflect back on some of the more popular costumes that we’ve seen over the years. Oh, sweet nostalgia!

What was your favorite Halloween costume that you wore when you were growing up? Is it on the list?

MINECRAFT The Movie Will be Directed by Shawn Levy

Earlier this year it was reported that Warner Bros. would be developing a big screen adaptation of the addictive video game Minecraft. Deadline now reports that the studio has hired Night at the Museum franchise director Shawn Levy to direct the feature.

In the game, players create their own avatar and are dropped into a blank world filled with nocturnal monsters. Players then use cubes to create, build, and destroy structures and other forms across multiple game modes and various players.

The movie will be a live-action adaptation, which seems weird because it would fit a lot better in a CG animated universe. Creating it in live-action would take away the the look of the brand, which the players have become accustomed to. Who knows though, maybe Levy has a way to make it all work.

This seems like a movie that Levy would want to be a part of. It seems like it would compliment his style of storytelling. My favorite movie that he's done so far is Real Steel with Hugh Jackman. He's also given us Big Fat Liar, The Pink Panther, and Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. This next film of his to be released is Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb

Do you think Levy will be able to come up with a unique way to tell this story on film?

Batman and TMNT Laplanders with Pump-Activated Bat Wings and Nunchucks

Yesterday we posted a some geeky t-shirts and hoodies that would all make for lazy/last-minute Halloween costumes. They were all cool looking enough to rock throughout the year as well, but winter is on its way and soon tees and sweatshirts aren’t gonna cut it in most places. So if you or your kids still wanna show off some geeky threads through the cold months, here are a couple laplander hats with a cool twist. These Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles laplanders have pumps on the left tassels that activate flaps on the side of the hats. The Batman logo hat has bat wing flaps, and the TMNT hat features Michelangelo’s face on the front with nunchuck flaps on the side. They run for $24.99 each on Think Geek (Product Pages: Batman / TMNT).

Side note: This kid seem genuinely happy to wear the Batman hat, but it looks like he's having to force a smile for the TMNT one. Maybe Mikey just isn't his favorite turtle, I don't know. I am getting a future serial killer vibe from the pic below, though. Stop staring into my soul!

Mysterious New BATMAN V SUPERMAN Set Found in New Mexico Desert

An interesting new report surfaced from the local Albuquerque station KOAT 7. There is video footage of a big and secretive construction site in the middle of a New Mexico desert near Deming. There is a set being built there with several structures for Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but what are they? This doesn't look like it would fit in with Gotham City or Metropolis. It seems to have a more exotic feel to it, so I'm going to go with Wonder Woman's home island of Themyscira. That's just my own speculation, but it could also be for one of the other superhero characters who reside in the DC universe. Watch the video yourself and let us know what you think it's for.

It's Hiccup Vs Eret in This HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 Deleted Scene

$

If you loved How to Train Your Dragon 2 as much as I did, you’ll be interested to see this deleted scene. The scene shows Hiccup taking on Eret after he and his gang are captured. It is also the first time Hiccup teaches a villain what it means to have earned the loyalty of a dragon, which (spoiler!) is sort of a big deal in the ultimate battle. Although it is very roughly animated (it’s in “story reel” format), it is fully voiced by Jay Baruchel (Hiccup), Kit Harrington (Eret), and America Ferrera (Astrid). The clip is introduced by DreamworksTV’s Dusan Brown, who is either 12 or 35. I can’t tell. He claims to be 12, but he is preternaturally poised, so it could be a lie.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be available for digital download on October 21 and hits shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on November 11. That’s my aunt’s birthday, so that may be her present.

PACIFIC RIM 2 Teaser Poster, Sequel Will Set up Third Film

So even though we have three more years until Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim 2 is released, Legendary Pictures has released a teaser poster for it on their Pacific Rim Facebook feed. It features several warships about be sucked into a vortex in the ocean. It leaves a lot to the imagination, especially since there are no Kaiju and Jaegars in it. It also looks like it may take place in different location.

Del Toro also recently did an interview with Collider, and during that sit down the director talked a little big about the second film and revealed that it would pave the way for a third film. This is what he said about it:

“Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”

I would love to see a couple more Pacific Rim movies! That first film made me feel like I was 10-years-old again, and it's nice feeling like that sometimes. There are no confirmed details on what the story of Pacific Rim 2 will be, but we know that it will involve more giant robots fighting giant monsters. It's set to hit theaters on April 7th, 2017.

The Poster Posse’s collaboration with Disney continues apace with six new posters for Big Hero 6, and frankly, I think these are the best ones yet. Although, looking back on Phase 1 (here) and the NYCC exclusive poster (here), it's really hard to choose a favorite. I do love Sharm Murugiah’s variant edition and Luke Butland’s San Fransokyo travel poster, though. Butland explained his inspiration,

I instantly loved the world that Disney had created for Big Hero 6 And wanted to do something that showed it off, it seemed to me that the city of Sanfransokyo was a character all unto itself so I chose that as the focal point of my print. Drawing inspiration from the classic City Travel posters of the 50’s and 60’s.  With this print I went in a completely different direction from my normal style, hopefully its worked out and I hope you guys like it !!!

I also really love the way Berkay Daglar and Simon Delart each put Baymax in a box in their own ways and the way Ben Mcleod’s take on the hero looks so iconic. Paul Shipper’s version is the only one I’ve seen that puts the whole team front and center, which is kind of key since the movie is called Big Hero 6.

I am seeing the movie really really soon, and this poster set just has me even more amped for it. Which one(s) would you hang on your wall?

Captivating First Footage from Disney’s Animated Short FEAST

$

Disney has released close to a minute of footage from their new animated short “Feast,” which will be attached to theatrical screenings of Big Hero 6. The short comes from first time director Patrick Osborne, who was an animator on films such as Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled, and was Head Animator on Disney’s 2012 award-winning short “Paperman.”

“Feast” follows a man’s love life as seen through the eyes of his dog, Winston, and is revealed "bite by bite through the meals they share." One of our editors saw the short last month, and wrote up a detailed summary that goes into how the man goes from feeding Winston dog food to more extravagant meals. I really hope kids don’t start serving their dogs plates of nachos. There’d be a mighty mess to clean up afterwards... and it wouldn’t be cheese.

The short looks to have improved upon the 2D/3D hybrid animation used in “Paperman.” Perhaps it’s just the fact that this film uses more color, but it really seems to be more vibrant and pop off the screen more. The lighting in particular is very striking and adds a lot of warmth and depth. It’s only a matter of time before we see a full feature using this type of hybrid animation, which brings Disney back to its 2D roots while simultaneously blazing a whole new trail.

You'll be able to watch "Feast" in its entirety before Big Hero 6 starting November 7th.

Farmer Grows Pumpkins in Frankenstein Face-Shaped Molds

You hear that? That’s the sound of everybody saying, “Aaaah! I wish I thought of that.” Well you didn’t. Tony Dighera thought of it and he’s probably gonna have a helicopter by the end of the year. No, seriously. I’m not just frivolously quoting a Rory Scovel bit. Dighera just turned a massive profit on these pumpkins that he grew in special Frankenstein(’s monster)-shaped molds. The California farmer has been trying to develop the perfect mold over the last four years. This year he had his first successful commercial harvest, producing 5,500 Frankenstein-shaped pumpkins which he sold to suppliers for $75 EACH, totaling over $400,000 in profit! His plans for next year include upping production to 30,000-40,000 pumpkins, including skull-shaped white pumpkins.

There are a few more pictures below (thanks to Geekologie) for you to check out as well. I’d love to see what these look like carved and lit with a candle.

Brief Fight Scene Description from BATMAN V SUPERMAN

$

I'll start out with a SPOILER Warning just incase you don't want anything spoiled for you.

I came across some details at Batman-News about a scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that was recently shot at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum on the MSU campus this week. According to the report, the museum is being used as Lex Luthor’s home in the movie, and they were filming a big party scene that was being hosted by Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. The people attending that party included Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne), Henry Cavill (Clark Kent), Gal Gadot (Diana Prince), Holly Hunter (US Senator), and Tao Okamoto (Mercy Graves). There's a big fight sequence that goes down at the party that sparks a major response, and here's a short description of that thanks to WILX News 10:

"Apparently Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne get into a physical altercation at the party. It’s so bad that the military has to show up! The military scene is expected to shoot this weekend."

That is definitely a fight that I would love to see. The fact that it gets so out of hand that the military is called in is pretty damn serious. That does't even seem like a fair fight. Affleck could easily kick Eisenberg's ass. I'm sure there will be more to it than what was described above though. After all, Lex is an ingenious fellow. Maybe there was some miscommunication as information was being passed down. It's more likely that the military being called in might just be Lex's personal security force. I guess we'll see.

You can see some photos taken while they were shooting on location right here. They don't show much though. Are you looking forward to seeing Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor fight!?

Marvel has announced another big comic book event for fans to look forward to in 2015… Planet Hulk! The teaser art features Captain America and Devil Dinosaur taking on an army of Hulks! I absolutely love this visual, especially Captain America wielding a freakin' battle axe! The illustration was created by artist Mukesh Singh. There's a lot of speculation that this will be a tie-in to the recently announced Secret Wars run. Marvel is going to be publishing a lot of really cool stuff next year, and it looks like I may actually have to engulf myself in comics again. Marvel Comics is sure to continue to roll out more teasers like this, so stay tuned.

Scarlett Johansson Offered GHOST IN THE SHELL Lead Role

scarlett-johansson-offered-ghost-in-the-shell-lead-role

A month ago it was reported that Wolf of Wall Street co-star Margot Robbie was in talks to play the lead role in the live-action feature film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. According to Deadline, she is instead likely to join DC Entertainment's Suicide Squad, which we reported on yesterday. Looks like those casting reports are true.

The article goes on to reveal that DreamWorks has now offered the part to Scarlett Johansson with a $10 million dollar payday. There's no word yet on whether she has accepted the offer, but the part is apparently hers for the taking if she wants it. Johansson might just end up being our Motoko, but that name is sure to be changed for American audiences.

A lot of fans of the classic anime are very unhappy with the fact that the studio is casting a white woman to play the role of a Japanese character. But that's just what happens when Hollywood takes a foreign property like Ghost in the Shell and Americanizes it. There's a really good chance that the movie is going to going to suck storywise, especially with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders at the helm. I'm sure the film will look incredible visually, but as you all know, that's not what makes a great film. Eye candy can only go so far. I'm just not expecting the movie to be as good as the anime many of us grew up watching.

As far Johansson possibly joining the film, I'm a huge fan of hers. She's become a very talented actress over the years, and thanks to Lucy and the Marvel films, she has proven that she can kick some major ass. But in my opinion she's not right for the role. She still has a kind of softness to her that doesn't fit the character. But maybe she'll be awesome! I think Robbie is still a better choice, considering the type of actress they are looking for. but that's not going to happen.

As I said before, I understand that there are a ton of very talented Japanese actresses out there who could take on this role, but the studio has a different vision for the franchise than the fans. Unfortunately, that's usually how it goes in this business.

Ghost in the Shell follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. if you haven't scene the original movie yet, then you're missing out on something amazing. What are your thoughts on Johansson possibly joining the movie?

TERMINATOR and ALIENS Art by Liam Brazier

Artist Liam Brazier spent some of his valuable time creating a couple of pieces of art paying homage to two of James Cameron's greatest achievements… Aliens and The Terminator. One thing Cameron was so good at with his films and stories is making the main antagonist a female badass. The illustrations will be a part of the "Imagined Worlds" art show being hosted by the Hero Complex Gallery. I'm sure we'll start seeing more art from that art show in the near future.

Robert Redford In Talks to Join Disney's PETE'S DRAGON

Disney is looking to cast Robert Redford in their live-action adaptation of Pete's Dragon. The legendary actor is currently in talks with the studio to join the film, which is being directed by David Lowery, who helmed the independent crime movie Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. If cast, Redford will join the two young actors previously cast: Oakes Fegley (Boardwalk Empire), who will play Pete in the story, and Oona Laurence, who will play Pete's friend.

THR also offers some new story details for the movie, saying, "While the original was set in a fishing village at the turn of the 20th century, the new story is set against the backdrop of loggers cutting down a forest. Pete is a boy whose parents died in car crash, and has been subsequently raised by Elliot, the titular dragon in the threatened forest."

They stor also features characters such as a forest ranger who finds Pete, the young daughter of the mill owner (Laurence), and the greedy brother of the mill owner. If Redford is cast in the movie he will play "a local who tells tall-tales involving dragons that no one believes."

The project will be a live-action film with a CGI dragon. The movie is scheduled to start shooting in New Zealand this fall. Hopefully the talent involved with the movie will give fans of the original something they will enjoy.

I just don't have the patience or time for a game like Minecraft. My kids are addicted to it though, and it's cool seeing the things that they build. They're really quite imaginative. But here's a video that shows off an epic metropolis that was created in Minecraft by an art student named Duncan Parcells. He calls it "Titan City," and it's a city that any superhero would be proud to defend. It took him 4,5 million blocks and two years on an Xbox 360 to build. It's incredibly impressive. Parcells, who is obviously interested in interactive design, goes by the name of ColonialPuppet on Xbox Live. He eventually plans on moving the city into a PC version of the game. He explains,

"All the blocks were hand placed on the map since it's Xbox but I have over a dozen or so PC buildings set aside for when it's moved to PC for good and those collectively took like a couple hours with Minecraft edit. I guess the medium is part of the message in this case.

"The city once finished on Xbox, will be permanently moved to PC and made even larger."

You can see a ton of screenshots of the city he built right here if the video below isn't enough for you. Thanks to Gizmodo for the tip.

Paramount Pictures has released a new, heart-pounding TV spot for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar that you're sure to enjoy. It's cut together really well, and it really hits those thrilling emotions. We also have a few photos from the movie for you to check out, and a few of them feature Nolan directing his latest masterpiece. I don't know what it is about the guy, but he just inspires the hell out of me.

EW then offers up some information on the IMAX footage that was shot for the film. Apparently the nearly three-hour film has more than an hour of awesome IMAX footage! So if you don't see this movie in IMAX you're really going to miss out on some visual badassery. Here's what Nolan said about his experience in making the film in relation to IMAX:

"This is the first film I have made where the actual experience of the film is paramount to the audience. You would think that’s the case with Batman movies but it’s not; they’re more dependent on the reaction of characters on screen. Interstellar is different. It harkens back to the direct experience films of 2001, where you’re not just experiencing it through the characters, you are lost in it."

The movie is set to be released on November 7th in theaters everywhere.

New POLTERGEIST Movie Gets a PG-13 Rating

new-poltergeist-movie-gets-a-pg-13-rating

The MPAA has given the Sam Raimi-produced Poltergeist remake a PG-13 rating for “intense frightening sequences, brief suggestive material, and some language.”

The original film was rated PG, and it was absolutely terrifying. What's funny is that this PG-13 remake probably won't be as scary as the original movie. The remake was directed by Gil Keenan, who has directed films such as the CG animated family horror film Monster House and City of Ember.

Jared Harris stars in the film as a character named Carrigan, described as "a larger than life TV personality who left the world of academia behind to become the star host of basic cable TV show 'Haunted House Cleaners.'" The movie also stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino, and Jane Adams as a family whose suburban home is invaded by a poltergeist. The attacks of the terrifying spirit escalate, and the youngest daughter is taken by them. With the help of Carrigan, the family have to come together to rescue her from the evil entities.

Even though I'm upset that this movie was remade, it still has an amazing cast and some talented people working on it. The movie will be released in 3D and is set to open in theaters on July 24th, 2015.

astonishing-replica-model-of-serenity-from-firefly

QMx has revealed an amazingly detailed replica model of the ship Serenity from Joss Whedon's Firefly. This is a must own collectible for any fan of the series, and it's one of the most detailed replicas of Captain Mal's ship that exists anywhere.

The Artisan Serenity is a massive 1:125 scale model that is created directly from the 3D models that were made for the 2005 movie. One of the things that makes this so unique is that each order is handmade in a process that takes about 130 hours, which is why it looks so damn incredible.

I'm sure you're wondering how much this bad boy actually costs. Are you ready for this? $7,495! If you want one, and can afford it, it's available for pre-order here. As much as I would have to love this, there's no way I could afford that price. It's still freakin' cool though! I've included all the details for the replica below the photos.

Quite simply, this is the biggest, most-detailed, most-impressive replica of Serenity ever created. QMx has spent the last decade in the tireless pursuit of this ship right here. And while we've produced many fine versions of Captain Mal's boat before, we couldn't help but feel there was just that little bit more we wanted to add, that extra bit of shiny we wanted to include. We wanted nothing less than to create the ultimate version of Serenity. Because until we achieved that, we can't truly say we've done the finest ship in the Verse justice.
What you see before you here the culmination of that dream. No detailed spared, no interior left unbuilt, this is the version of Serenity never to be eclipsed. Fact is, the only way to do better will be to wait 500 years and buy your own Series 3 Firefly!
Screen-Accurate Details
Created from the digital files of the Serenity from the sci-fi TV series, Firefly. The QMx FX Cinema Arts model shop created the 3-D files, prototyped and 3-D printed this replica. Then QMx artisans did all the mold work and casting to make this screen-accurate replica of Serenity at 1:124 scale.
