CARRIE Remake Gets a Release Date

$

0

The Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry, Stop-Loss) directed remake of Stephen King's Carrie starring Chloe Moretz has been given an official release date of March 15th, 2013.

Carrie was released in 1974 and it was King's first published novel. The story centers on a misunderstood teenage girl named Carrie White, her extraordinary telekinetic powers, and her violent rampage of bloody revenge. It doesn't help that she is raised by an insane religious fanatic of a mother. There's an underlying lesson to be learned from the story... don't bully people with telekinetic powers because they will get their revenge.

I love the 1976 Brian De Palma movie that was made, and it will be interesting to see a new version based on the source material. Apparently this will be a closer adaptation of the book than De Palma's film was.

After the project was first announced King made the following statement:

I’ve heard rumblings about a Carrie remake, as I have about The Stand and It. Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White… hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg.

I wonder if King still feels the same way, now that the movie is being made and the lead role is cast.

Short List of Directors for THE HUNGERS GAMES Sequel Revealed

$

Now that Gary Ross is out as the director for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, Lionsgate has come up with a short list of directors that they want to replace him. They're obviously looking for someone that will make the best possible adaptation, make the fans happy, as well as find someone that the author of the books, Suzanne Collins, will be happy with. She apparently worked very closely with Ross on the first movie, and she's much more interested in quality filmmaking than box-office prowess.

The studio is looking to get the film into production in August, so they need someone fast, someone who has the ability to tell a big ensemble story. Here's whose on their list so far... Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men), David Cronenberg (A History of Violence, The Fly, Eastern PromisesAlejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (21 Grams, Babel) and a few others who were not named.

These are all pretty solid choices, but I would love to see Cronenberg adapt this material! I don't think it will happen, but it would definitely make for an interesting adaptation. I think the more appropriate choice for the Catching Fire would be Cuaron. He seems like the director that would be able to take on the epic property, and his directing style seems to fit the world that the story is set in. As for Inarritu, I'm not the biggest fan of his work, but out of the three he'll most likely end up with the gig because he might be the least busy and the cheapest.

The studio needs a director fast, so we'll find out their choice soon enough. Out of these three director who who you like to see get the gig?

Catch Fire is scheduled to be released on November 22nd, 2013.

SIN CITY 2 Officially Starts Production!

It's been seven years since Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller made the first Sin City. After all of these years of talk and rumors about a sequel, it's actually finally happening! Today Dimension Films announced that Sin City 2, which will be called in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, has officially gone into production. There's no information on any of the details of the film’s story, but casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. I imagine if you've read the comics then you have a good idea of what the movie will be about.

I enjoyed the first Sin City movie, but it's been so long that the excitement of a sequel has dropped for me. It's cool that they're doing it, but I'm not overly excited about it like I was three years ago. Are you excited about seeing this sequel to Sin City?

Here's the official announcement:

Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence on the highly anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City, entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film will be produced by AR Films and Quick Draw Productions, financed through AR Films U.S and released domestically by Dimension Films.

“The first question I am always asked is “When will you make another Sin City? ,” said Rodriquez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller said, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.“

The script and details of the film’s story have been kept tightly under wraps. Casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. The film, a Quick Draw Production, will be produced by Rodriguez and producing partners Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic; and by Alexander Rodnyansky and Sergei Bespalov and Stephen L’Hereux. Miller, The Weinstein Company’s Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax’s Adam Fields will act as executive producers. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Frank Miller and Academy Award winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film is expected to begin production this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Alexander Rodnyansky said, “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Robert Rodriguez and Quick Draw Productions. It is a rare opportunity to produce and finance a film with the high profile and enormous fan base of the Sin City franchise. AR FIlms will be managing worldwide sales of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, as well as Robert’s Machete Kills at the Cannes Film Festival in May.”

The original Sin City was brought to the screen by Rodriguez and Miller and released by Dimension in 2005, and proved to be a landmark step forward in filmmaking, breaking ground with immersive green screen to create its iconic stylish look. The first film, released on April 1, 2005, grossed over $160 million (US) worldwide and is a consistently strong home video and television performer.

“Audiences have been clamoring for Sin City 2 with Robert and Frank for a long time and trust me, it will be worth the wait,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company. “This will be my 11th collaboration with Robert in 16 years and he’s become a great friend. I look forward to continuing our long lasting relationship and partnering on more projects in the future.”

The deal was negotiated by Aaron Kaufman, Craig Emanuel of Loeb & Loeb and Robert Newman of WME on behalf of Rodriguez; David Glasser and Andrew Kramer on behalf of Dimension Films; Schuyler Moore of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and Jere Hausfater on behalf of AR Films; Kenneth Keller and Garth Rosengren of Krieg, Keller, Sloan, Reilley & Roman and John LaViolette of Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal LaViolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman on behalf of Stephen L’Heureux and Solopsist Films; and Mark Lichtman and Neil Meyer and Allison Binder of Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson & Binder on behalf of Miller.

NEED FOR SPEED Being Developed as a Feature Film

Electronic Arts is bring their Need for Speed video game franchise to the big screen, and they've hired Real Steel screenwriter John Gatins to develop a pitch for it. He will write and produce the film project, which is currently being shopped around Hollywood. Apparently Warner Bros., Sony and Paramount are all interested in taking on the racing property.

According to the report Paramount is the front-runner, but other bids are still being considered. I could see this being a very hot franchise, especially since the Fast and Furious films have become such a huge success. Of course people are going to want to cash in on a property that has the potential to be a huge success. I doubt if that Universal Pictures as they already have the Fast and Furious franchise, and they don't need another car one... or do they?

The latest game in the franchise is called Need for Speed: The Run, and it's the 18th game in the franchise. The game gave a fresh take on the franchise by actually giving it a plot, which is a first. Need for Speed has been a huge money maker for EA games over the years, so it makes sense that they want to bring it to the big screen.

Are you interested in seeing Need For Speed get adapted into a feature film?

Warner Bros. to Develop new Thriller called THE GHOSTMAN

$

Warner Bros. has acquired the film rights to a unreleased novel by Roger Hobbs called The Ghostman. The novel was written while Hobbs was a senior in college. The story is a thriller that follows a character named Jack, who happens to be "one of the most successful armed robbers in the world, whose persona has been neatly disguised through years of stagecraft. A casino heist gives him the chance to make a killing in cash -- or be killed in the process."

Here's a description of the book, which is set to be released early next year...

Jack Delton is a hard man to get hold of. There are maybe thirty people who know he exists. Not all of them believe he is still alive. And only one of them knows his real name. So when he gets the email he knows whatever it is, it's going to be bad. Marcus Fairlan and Jack used to work together. Until they had a falling out, after which Jack assumed the only reason Marcus would want to find him would be to kill him. It turns out it's worse than that. Marcus bankrolled a casino heist that has just gone spectacularly wrong, leaving a parking lot full of bodies and an armed and dangerous crackhead named Jerome Ribbons gone AWOL with a million dollars in cash. Marcus had the money earmarked for a major drug deal, and if he doesn't deliver, not only is the deal going down the tubes, but the man known as The Wolf is going to come looking for him. To make things right with Marcus, Jack needs to locate Ribbons, get the money and make the delivery. All in just 24 hours. Even for a man with Jack's resources, it's a tall order. Especially when he has a funny feeling the whole thing is a set-up...

As of right now there's no talent is attached to the project, but director Paul Haggis (Crash, The Next Three Days) is interested in bringing the book to the screen. I could see Haggis taking on a film project like this. It seems like a pretty cool story that will make for a good movie.

Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth Cast in PARANOIA

Hunger Games co-star Liam Hemsworth has landed the lead role in a new thriller called Paranoia set to be directed by Robert Luketic the director of films such as 21, The Ugly Truth, and Legally Blonde

I could really care less about Hemsworth, and Luketic hasn't really made the greatest films. What make this movie worth watching is the fact that Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman are going to be joining the film as well. There's not a lot of details on the story but according to the report "it's a corporate espionage thriller set in the world of dueling telecom giants."

Do you think this is a film project you can get behind?

Paramount Picks Up High School Comedy STATUS UPDATE

Could a movie social media status updates be a hit? Paramount Pictures is hoping so according to Deadline. The studio has bought Status Update, a pitch by Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes. The project is described as "a high school comedy that utilizes social media, particularly Facebook.

Rothchild most recently sold her pitch Who Invited Her? to Dreamworks with Reese Witherspoon attached, and she adapted her book How To Be Divorced By 30 for Universal. Barnes co-wrote the animated film Dorothy Of Oz

I was not sure how Easy-A would do, but it turned out to be funny. If Status Update gets someone like Emma Stone to lead it could be a hit at the box office. What do you think?

Official Synopsis for Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED

$

0

Over the last year we've gotten a few little tidbits of information on the story and characters from Quentin Tarantino's new movie Django Unchained. From that info we have a pretty good idea of what the film will be about, but today we've got an official synopsis giving us some more details to help fill in the missing pieces.

The movie has an incredible cast of actors, and the story sounds great. I'm looking forward to Tarantino's new film, and I have no doubt it will shock and entertain us all. Read over the synopsis and let us know where you think this movie will rate with Tarantino's other films.

Here's the Synopsis:

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival...

Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is produced by Stacey Sher, Pilar Savone and Reginald Hudlin. The executive producers are Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Michael Shamberg, Shannon McIntosh, and James Skotchdopole. DJANGO UNCHAINED will be released in the U.S. on December 25, 2012, and internationally by Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Update on Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

$

0

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently gave an update on the Guardians of the Galaxy movie that they are currently prepping for production. Her confirmed that the movie would portray the modern incarnation of the team, which includes such intergalactic superheroes as Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and of course Rocket Raccoon.

This is the first solid news about the movie that we've heard since its initial rumorish report back in August of last year. During the press conference for The Avengers Feige was asked about the non-sequel film projects that Marvel was prioritizing, here's his response...

I think whether it's Ant-Man, or Dr. Strange, or The Inhumans, or The Guardians of the Galaxy... We are very excited about bringing things like that, maybe things exactly like that, to the screen. [...] When you tell people, you know what would be really cool? This movie, and there's a raccoon, and there's a tree... And they go, 'What?' And people like you know what it is, and get excited. And the majority of people go, 'Did you say a raccoon and a tree?' 'Oh yeah, they're going to steal the whole movie. They're hilarious.' 'Okay, I'll believe it when I see it.' I like that.

I would love to see all of these movies happen, and I know they eventually will, it's just a matter of what one they will do first. I think Dr. Strange is the most likely choice, it's also the movie that I want to see made most. It seems like it's the farthest along in production, and has a completed script so why shouldn't it be the next non-sequel Marvel film? He was then asked asked specifically about Guardians of the Galaxy, and if the movie would focus on the newest team, and to that he replied...

Yeah. It's more Star-Lord and Drax and Gamora, and less Vance Astro and that team.

I'm very excited to see Marvel bring to life some of their other properties! I have no doubt they'll end up being awesome movies that we'll all enjoy.
