DOCTOR STRANGE — All 17 Actors Rumored for the Role Over 4 Years

0
0

We don't yet know who will be cast as Marvel's Doctor Strange, but it seems like every known actor has been rumored for the role. We look back at all seventeen actors who have reportedly been in the running over that last four years and give you a bit of info on the casting woes.

From our understanding, the two actors who came the closest have been Joaquin Phoenix and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The first concept that almost went into production was to have a 30 something actor as Strange, who could be the new center of the Marvel cineverse in the way Iron Man is currently. The thinking was that by casting younger they could get more movies out of the chosen actor. When a deal with Gordon-Levitt couldn't be made, the script was changed to have an older Doctor Strange. During that rewrite period we went six months without any casting rumors.

Marvel was hoping to have Phoenix signed before San Diego Comic-Con 2014, but the multi-picture deal was just too much of a commitment for him. With a director, shoot date, and release date already announced Marvel is now scramming to find the right actor before production starts.

Based purely on looks, Jack Huston is a lot like I'd imagine Doctor Strange. I think Edgar Ramirez could bring something really unexpected to the role, but that's enough fan casting out of me.

Today, according to Variety three new names have entered the mix as potentials, Oscar IsaacMatthew McConaughey, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Warner Bros. is currently holding a big shareholder meeting today, and during the meeting the studio revealed some big release date information for their slate of upcoming DC superhero movies. Thanks to Ben Fritz of the Wall Street Journal, we have learned the following details that includes information about Suicide SquadJustice League 2; Aquaman; Cyborg; a new standalone Superman movie; a standalone Batman movie, and a Green Lantern reboot. They also revealed the actor who will be playing The Flash in a standalone film. Here are all of the details we know so far:

"First DC movie after Batman vs Superman will be Suicide Squad."

"Wonder Woman movie coming in 2017!"

"2nd DC movie in 2017: Justice League"

"2018 DC Movies: The Flash starring Ezra Miller and Aquaman starring Jason Momoa"

"2019 DC Movies: Shazam (with Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam) and Justice League 2"

"Other DC movies in the works: Cyborg, a Green Lantern reboot, and new stand-alone Superman and Batman movies."

They've got quite a line-up of films there. Now let's hope that they can give these characters awesome movies that the fans will enjoy! The information given confirms that Momoa's standalone Aquaman movie is really going to happen. It also reveals for the first time that Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) will be The Flash! That's an interesting choice. It's hard for me to imagine him in the role right now, but he is a talented actor. I've also learned for the first that Cyborg is getting his own film, which is cool! Then of course there's the Green Lantern reboot, which will probably make some fans cringe. We'll fill you in on more details as they become available.

How THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Changed Movies - Short Doc

When The Blair Witch Project first came out in 1999, I completely gave into the hype. I was a fan of horror movies, and this one seemed completely different and intriguing. One of the main things it had going for it was the online marketing campaign, and how a lot of people couldn't tell if the movie was real or not. I remember discussing all of this with my dad and my brother as we were waiting in a long ass line to see the movie. Of course, after the movie was over, we realized that it obviously wasn't real, but it was still an incredibly fun movie going experience.

The film became the most profitable movie of all time… so far. It was made on a budget of only $25,000, and the film went on to gross $250 million worldwide. The Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez-directed film also opened the door to found footage movies. It popularized that style of filmmaking and we are still seeing the effects of it today.

Academy Originals has released a "behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Blair Witch Project and its impact on the future of movies - from sparking a found footage genre boom to its innovative use of Internet marketing." The short doc is called Moments That Changed The Movies: The Blair Witch Project, and it's worth checking out, especially if you were lucky enough to be a part of this movie phenomenon.

A lot of people give the movie crap now, but I still have appreciation for it.

STAR WARS REBELS Clips and Behind the Scenes Web Series

If you didn’t watch the first two episodes of Star Wars Rebels, there’s still time to correct your error. As the Berenstein Bears taught me when Brother didn’t do his homework and then tried to cut school, “It’s never too late to correct a mistake!” (That almost rhymes.) You should really be watching for a few reasons. First, it’s a good show on its own merits. It’s a fun action adventure series with interesting characters, set in a galactic time period we haven’t seen on screen before. Secondly, the show is going to set up a few things for Star Wars: Episode VII and also shares aesthetics with the new sequels. Third, the show is bringing back some of our favorite Star Wars things. The second episode, “Droids in Distress,” features R2-D2 and C-3PO, plus an homage to Disneyland’s Star Tours, including a galactic bus driver voiced by Paul Rubens.

Web series Rebels Recon takes you behind the scenes of every episode, with the makers talking about how episodes come together and answering your pressing Star Wars questions, like, at this point in the story, who is in the Stormtrooper armor? It’s worth watching just for that, but the host also has a seemingly endless supply of Star Wars t-shirts. I really covet the Boba Fett v-neck.

I have also included some clips and TV spots, as well as a music video for "Rebels Theme" by Kevin Kiner. If all this combined doesn’t convince you to watch the show, then may God have mercy on your soul.

Star Wars Rebels, set five years before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, tells the story of the Rebellion’s beginnings while the Empire spreads tyranny through the galaxy.

Star Wars Rebels airs Monday nights on Disney XD.

Every year during the Halloween season, I make a point of searching out at least one horror movie that I've never seen before. This year I started going through some horror movies from the 1980s, and as you might expect, a lot of them look like ridiculous yet entertaining flicks. Since Halloween is coming up, I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of these movies that I came across that I have never heard of before and ones that maybe you haven't seen before either. I included a short synopsis, poster, and trailer for each one. Make sure you watch the trailer because some of them are sure to make you laugh. I love these kinds of films!

Three new action-packed clips have surfaced for the live-action feature film adaptation of the anime Kite. It looks like the filmmakers may have done a decent job of bringing this story to the big screen. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, India Eisley, Callan McAuliffe, Cleo Rinkwest, Russel Savadier, Keci Eatock, Matthew Van Leeve, and Jaco Muller

Kite was directed by Ralph Ziman, and the story follows a young orphaned schoolgirl named Sawa, who is living in a failed state, during a time of post-financial collapse, "where the corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women. When her father, a cop, is slain by someone dirty inside the force, she vows to track the murderer down with the help of her father’s ex-partner."

The first clip you watch is called "Toys," and it's been labeled a red-band clip, the second is called "Rescue," and the third "Disguise."  All of them offer some great adrenaline-fueled footage. The movie will be released on October 10th, 2014.

Zany Animated Short - BREAKFAST IN PARIS

A mother goes to great lengths to try and get her son to eat breakfast in this amazingly entertaining animated action short called "Breakfast in Paris." The son isn't interested in eating breakfast though, and when his mom comes after him he goes on the run, trying to escape her and the bowl of cereal that she is hell bent on making him eat. The story escalates into complete craziness that is extremely funny and vigorously energetic. The film was directed by Aurélie Gomez, and I had an absolute blast watching it! The short left me with a big smile on my face, and I hope is does the same for you.

Zack Snyder Confirmed to Direct Two-Part JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie

Warner Bros. is announcing a lot of movie news today regarding their DC movie line-up. Click here to read all about the upcoming DC Universe superhero movies and about the actor they cast in the role of The Flash. We've now learned from a press release posted on Business Wire that director Zack Snyder isn't just going to direct one Justice League movie but two. What's cool about this is that it will not be a movie and a sequel. The two films will tell a single story cut into two parts. Justice League Part One will be released in 2017, and Justice League Part Two will come out in 2019. There aren't many details, but this is what the press released gives us:

"Justice League Part One, directed by Zack Snyder, with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams reprising their roles (2017)"

“Justice League Part Two, directed by Zack Snyder (2019)"

Like I said, there isn't much there. We don't really have any solid details on the story they will tell, but there have been rumors that you can read about here.  I just hope that Warner Bros. will start making great superhero movies again. They really did awesome with the Dark Knight trilogy, but Man of Steel, as cool as it looked, still left me feeling empty. Do you think Snyder and the studio have what it takes to bring all these characters together to tell an incredible epic tale?

Stan Lee is back with another wonderful rant that will make you think. The latest Stan's Rants episode is called "Superhero Potty Talk," and he goes off on how superheroes never seem to have to go to the bathroom. Only Stan could get away with a web-series like this. If anyone else ranted about the things that he does no one would listen. The guy is always entertaining.

You can catch up on some of his previous rants that we've previously posted such as superhero ice cream barslong movie credits, Facing Front, and 3D movies. Enjoy the rants of Stan!

Big Hero 6 is Disney's first animated movie adapted from a Marvel comic book. If it is successful we'll likely see a couple sequels, but this could create an opportunity for other Marvel properties. So far the Marvel cineverse exists in movies and TV, and it's coming soon to Netflix. I wonder how long it will be before we see it extend into games and animation. I feel like between the two we'll see a Marvel cineverse game first.

Disney has released a clip, four videos of characters displaying the powers of their suits, and a massive 45 megapixel textless poster.

Big Hero 6 blasts into theaters November 7th (USA).

BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS BLACKGATE - Cancelled Sequel Concept Art

We've got a great set of concept art for the cancelled sequel to the video game Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. The concept art shows us a very cool scene in which Bane kicks Batman's ass.

In the first game there is a mysterious explosion at Blackgate Prison that allows Joker, Penguin, and Black Mask to gather enough henchmen in order to take over their own section of the prison. Batman moves in to investigate and learns that there is more to it than your average uprising. He has is work cut out for him.

The cut scenes in the game looked like hand drawn comics, which is basically the same style they were going with here. The art was created by Calum Alexander Watt, and I came across it over on XombieDirge

New HARRY POTTER Spinoff Series Could Be More than Just a Trilogy

Warner Bros. released some additional information today on the upcoming Harry Potter spinoff trilogyFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Up to this point all we've known is that it will be directed by David Yates from a script being written by J.K. Rowling and that the first film in the trilogy would be released on November 18th, 2016.

Today we've learned from Kevin Tsujihara, the CEO of Warner Bros., that the series they are developing would “at least” be a trilogy and that we can expect to see the second and third installments on the big screen in 2018 and 2020. Now, when you use a term like "at least," it says to me that Harry Potter fans could expect more than just a trilogy. A trilogy is the least that they will do, but they are leaving the door open for more films, which is awesome.

The following information comes from a press released posted on Business Wire.

The Studio will release three pictures, in 2016, 2018 and 2020, based on best-selling author J.K. Rowling’s original story and screenwriting debut, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Set in an extension of her familiar wizarding world, featuring magical creatures and characters inspired by Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbook and its fictitious author, Newt Scamander, “Fantastic Beasts” will be directed by David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter movies, and reunite the filmmaking team of David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

I really enjoy the world of Harry Potter, and if the studio keeps makes films set in that world, I'll continue to watch them. Harry Potter, of course, isn't involved in this new trilogy, and that's fine. There are lots of other interesting and fun characters that fill this magical realm, and I'm excited to be introduced to them.

Name All of the Johnny Depp Characters in this One Cosplay

This is the perfect example of when indecision goes terribly, terribly RIGHT! C’mon, you know this is brilliant, so give it up for this guy. This walking all-you-can-eat buffet of Johnny Depp cosplay looks like something that crawled out of the nightmare of someone who just binge watched all of Depp’s films on Netflix. And! he managed to cosplay all of these characters without painting his face white... somewhere in the world Tim Burton is shaking his fist in the air.

Do your best to name all of the characters being represented here in the comments section below. Or, come up with a cool name combination for him for extra points. (If anyone knows the name of the cosplayer or photographer, please let us know so we can credit them.)

Christian Bale in Talks for Danny Boyle's STEVE JOBS Movie

christian-bale-in-talks-for-danny-boyles-steve-jobs-movie-social.jpg

When David Fincher was looking to direct the Aaron Sorkin scripted Steve Jobs biopic for Sony Pictures, word got out that he wanted to cast Christian Bale in the role. Nothing was ever confirmed for that, and it faded away when Fincher walked away from the project and Danny Boyle stepped in. Leonardo DiCaprio was Boyle's top choice to play Jobs, but the actor recently stepped away from negotiations to take a break from acting.

Now it looks like Bale is actually being considered for the role. THR reports that the actor is in talks with the studio. Apparently Bale was in negotiations with Fox to star in another movie called The Deep Blue Goodbye, but that all went south. Bale is now looking to fill the open spot in his schedule with a meaty role... like Jobs. Bale is currently the top contender for the role, but other actors being considered are Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Bradley Cooper.

The biopic is based on Walter Isaacson's bestselling authorized biography, which was based on more than 40 interviews that the author had with Jobs. As well as interviews with friends, family, and colleagues.

The film itself is said to consist of three long scenes that take place prior to the launches of some of Jobs' most buzzed-about products, including the Mac, NeXT (after Jobs had left Apple), and the iPod

I've been looking forward to this movie since is was first announced and Sorkin came on board to write it. Hopefully Sony can seal the deal and move forward with the production. Bale is an amazing actor and he would be great in the part.

Costume Hoodies Are Halloween Shortcuts for the Cold, Lazy Among Us

It is a cruelty that Halloween is both in the late fall and a mostly outdoor nighttime celebration, because when you were a kid your mom probably made you wear a jacket over your superhypercool Rainbow Brite and/or Karate Kid costume even though the bright glow of candy kept you warm. Now you’re an adult and you don’t have to listen to anybody, but your tolerance for cold is markedly reduced. Cruel. Luckily for all the cold-intolerant/supremely lazy among us, someone invented the costume hoodie, and now all you have to do is throw one on to be both costumed and seasonally appropriately attired. We’ve collected a few of our favorites, so you can order one just in time for Halloween, or just in time to wear in your regular, day to day life. We don’t judge.

Keanu Reeves Handles Some Intruders in Clip from JOHN WICK

Pop quiz, hotshot. Masked men have entered your house. They all have guns and are trying to kill you. What do you do? What do you do??? If you’re Keane Reeves in the new film John Wick, you take them all out like a boss. The soon to be released debut feature from stunt coordinators turned directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski stars Reeves as a retired hit man who gets back into the game to get revenge on the Russian mobsters who killed his beloved dog, who was a gift from his late wife. The clip below shows Reeves taking on those aforementioned intruders and gives us a much better sense of the pace of the action in this film than the rapid cut trailers they’ve released so far.

In Lucas Lowman’s review that we posted yesterday, he compared the frenetic action to the gun play in Equilibrium. I see a touch of the "gun-fu" aspect in this clip, but the camera work and editing in this are much more natural and fluid. From the 00:30 mark forward, you get these minimally cut takes that are shot fairly wide so the choreography can really shine. What I also really liked, and this is a credit to the directors and Reeves as an actor (say what you will about his dramatic range), is that you can see the decision making he’s doing while he’s fighting. I think other actors often fumble that aspect of doing action and complex choreography to the point of it looking more like a dance than a life or death situation.

John Wick also stars Willem Dafoe, John Leguizamo, Ian McShane, and Adrianne Palicki. It hits theaters October 24th.

Thanks to the increasingly realistic make-up effects we see in film and the expensive cosplay endeavors that have grown more and more accurate and elaborate, plain ol’ rubber Halloween masks just don’t cut it anymore. They have no wow factor, and they certainly aren’t scaring anyone. Mark Rober and his Digital Dudz team are here to the rescue. They’ve developed masks and t-shirts that house any Android or Apple phone (including that giant iPhone 6 Plus) which can play animation via their app. There are are some really cool designs, and Marvel even gave them permission to do a couple Iron Man shirts and a Captain America shirt. The shirts are the perfect lazy costume for those of you (like me) who live in areas where it’ll probably still be too hot to rock an awesome costume hoodie.

Below the shirt gifs is an in-depth video where you can see the shirts and masks in action, as well as their faux real body suits and prop illusion costumes. All the masks, shirts, and costumes are available here for very reasonable prices and just in time for Halloween.

At the New York Comic-Con Arrow panel last week, star Stephen Amell tossed out some hints about what we can expect to see go down in Starling City this season.

First, he spoke about (spoiler!) the loss of Sarah Lance at the end of the premiere, and hinted that Laurel will be taking up the Canary wig soon. Ugh. It’s been obvious for awhile that they were going that route, but I’ve been holding out (foolish, misguided) hope that Sarah would stick around and Laurel would die. We’re getting the opposite, which will be fine, I guess. (Can they at least recast Laurel?)

In the genre of things that make you go hmmm… Tommy Merlyn will be back this season. He hasn’t risen from the dead — he’ll be appearing in flashbacks in Hong Kong, and that is interesting. I wonder if Tommy will turn out to be less innocent than we thought.

Episode 9 will be the midseason finale, and it will end with a literal cliffhanger. If it’s Oliver Queen hanging from a cliff, I’m not worried. He can easily pull himself up, even from the smallest handhold. We’ve seen his workouts. He can handle it.

There will be a two part crossover with The Flash. Part one will be called “Flash vs. The Arrow,” and part two will be titled “The Brave and the Bold,” which I think means that Batman will be making an appearance. (That was a joke. Don’t yell at me in the comments.)

Finally, Amell said that the increased number of costumed heroes in Starling City will be important in the finale, leading some to speculate wildly that the finale will introduce the Justice League to the small screen DC world. Which, I guess that isn’t impossible, but I don’t know that we have enough evidence to state that conclusively yet.

Arrow airs Wednesday nights on the CW.

"We need to make it personal for her. Let her see what the Capitol did to District 12."

Lionsgate has released a new one-minute trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. It's called "Return to District 12," and it focuses on the destruction of District 12.  In the trailer we hear a conversation between President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) talking about their uncertainty about the leadership they need from Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence). That all changes though when she is taken back to visit her home, District 12, which has been destroyed. Of course that's going to light a fire under her ass!

The first part of the two part finale finds Katniss "in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage." The Francis Lawrence-directed film hits theaters on November 21st, 2014.

37 Cinematic Driving Duos Supercut by Roman Holiday

Roman Holiday has created a four and a half minute supercut of the most memorable car interior shots from thirty-seven films. You can find the list of all thirty-seven on the videos page.

It seems that regardless of the shooting style of the director, framing two people inside a car looks standard. But it's the context of the scene, interplay in the frame, and production design that make each one feel unique within the framing template.
