Rare Unseen STAR WARS Poster Art

rare-unseen-star-wars-poster-art

I love it when when insanely cool stuff like this from the original Star Wars trilogy finds its way into the light after all these years. Just when you think you've seen it all we get to see more original 1970s and '80s Star Wars poster art for the first time. A new Star Wars Art Series book is being released. It's the fifth and final book of series, and it includes rare never-before-seen posters that were created for the theatrical release of the film. The book was written and edited by Jonathan Rinzler, who says,

“This was not really a research book; George really wanted to show the posters without credits. He wanted to highlight the art. So my job was to try and find the actual artwork or layered artwork so we could take off the credits so you could see the artwork for what it is.”

Below you'll find seven pieces of artwork that were designed for posters that Lucasfilm never used for some reason. The illustrations are freakin' amazing and worth your time to check out.

Red-Band Trailer for Joe Carnahan's STRETCH Starring Patrick Wilson

An insane red-band trailer has been released for director Joe Carnahan's awesome-looking new movie StretchPatrick Wilson stars in the film and plays "a down-on-his-luck chauffeur looking to relieve his debt by driving around a mysterious billionaire who drags him to hell and back."

This dark and wacky comedic adventure will not be getting a theatrical release. It was just way too over-the-top and crazy for the studio, but the movie is currently available to watch on digital outlets and VOD. So if you want to watch it right now you can!

This latest trailer embraces the red-band label and includes violence, cussing, nudity, and other weird stuff. The wildly fast-paced film co-stars Norman Reedus, Jessica Alba, Chris Pine, Brooklyn Decker, Ed Helms, Ray Liotta, Mindy Robinson, Randy Couture, and David Hasselhoff.

New Posters Pay Tribute to Niche Kids Halloween Films

The Halloween Tree by Glen Brogan

The Halloween Tree by Glen Brogan

Halloween is coming, and it’s time to start your yearly rituals of wearing ugly pumpkin sweaters, making apple cider, killing a drifter, and watching your favorite Halloween movies. For most people, that means either a bunch of horror films or It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. For other people who liked niche stuff as kids, that means The Halloween Tree. For other, much weirder people, that means Mad Monster Party. For those niche-loving weirdos, The Strange Kids Club is offering posters that pay tribute to the classic Halloween films.

The first, by Glen Brogan, whom we’ve featured before, pays tribute to The Halloween Tree, a TV movie based on a Ray Bradbury novel that first aired in 1993. According to IMDb, the movie is about “four children [who] learn the origins of Halloween customs while trying to save the life of their friend.” I haven’t seen the movie, but this poster makes me want to check it out, I really really love this piece. I would happily hang it as the centerpiece of my fall decorations.

The second piece is by Zach Bellissimo, and it pays tribute to Mad Monster Party, which sounds bananas. It is a 1967 Rankin/Bass production in which all the scariest monsters gather on Evil Island to celebrate Baron Boris von Frankenstein’s discovery of the secret of total destruction. Things go poorly from there. This one has a fun, kind of period specific cartoony vibe that would be great for a party.

Both pieces are receiving limited edition runs of 100 prints, and they go on sale on Thursday, October 16 at 11 am (not sure which time zone, I’m guessing Eastern) for $25 in the Strange Kids Club shop.

Six Deleted Scenes from EDGE OF TOMORROW

Tom Cruise and Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow was one of my favorite movies of the summer. I was blown away by it's awesomeness. If you haven't seen it yet, the movie was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray and now you can watch it whenever you want. One of my favorite aspects of the film was the humor, because it was completely unexpected. But the story is also great, and the action is incredible. If you've seen the movie already, and you were entertained by what it had to offer, I have six deleted scenes from it for you to watch to add to the film's greatness. Enjoy the clips!

THE IRON GIANT Poster by DKNG

The Iron Giant by Brad Bird is a fan boy/girl favorite. DKNG has created a poster for Mondo Tees and in just a couple of hours it has already sold out. Only 260 of these hand numbered screenprinted posters were made. The art is beautiful in sepia tones, with clean lines, and an atmospheric feel. At 18"x24" and only $40, I can see why they sold out so quickly.

Amusing Red-Band Trailer for DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

Lionsgate has released a great red-band trailer for director Justin Simien's fantastic looking film Dear White People. The movie is a satire about stereotypes, racism, and culture clashes, on a college campus. I've heard nothing but great things about this movie, so I'm looking forward to watching it when it's released later this month. The trailer isn't crazy out of control or anything, but you might want to put your headphones on if you're at work.

The unexpected election of activist Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) as head of a traditionally black residence hall sets up a college campus culture war that challenges conventional notions of what it means to be black. While Sam leverages her notoriety as host of the provocative and polarizing radio show “Dear White People” to try to prevent the college from diversifying Armstrong Parker House, outgoing head-of-house Troy Fairbanks (Brandon P. Bell), son of the university’s dean (Dennis Haysbert), defies his father’s lofty expectations by applying to join the staff of Pastiche, the college’s influential humor magazine. Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams), an Afro-sporting sci-fi geek, is recruited by the otherwise all-white student newspaper to go undercover and write about black culture—a subject he knows little about—while the aggressively assimilated Coco Conners (Teyonah Parris) tries to use the controversy on campus to carve out a career in reality TV.

But no one at Winchester University is prepared for Pastiche’s outrageous, ill-conceived annual Halloween party, with its “unleash your inner Negro” theme throwing oil on an already smoldering fire of resentment and misunderstanding. When the party descends into riotous mayhem, everyone must choose a side.

The movie opens up in theaters on October 17th.

10 Fun Facts about TRICK 'R TREAT

10-fun-facts-about-trick-r-treat1

Trick 'r Treat is my number one favorite Halloween movie of all time, as it perfectly captures the spirit of the holiday in every aspect. Unfortunately, it never got an official theatrical release because it famously got screwed over by Warner Bros. Regardless of that, the movie generated a huge cult following, one large enough that Legendary Pictures officially greenlit a sequel that writer and director Michael Dougherty is currently developing. This is a more recent Halloween film, but it's an instant classic to anyone who has seen it. If you're a true fan of the film, and you were following its story, then you might know most of these, but here are ten fun facts about the movie that you might want to go through just in case.

  • Many of the kids trick or treating in the film were actually Little people. They were used since the movie was shot mainly at night and real kids could not work these hours.
  • Most of the Jack O' Lanterns in the movie were made out of foam or ceramic. There was an on-set joke that no pumpkins were harmed during the making of this movie.
  • The werewolves that we saw in the movie were created by Tatopoulos Studios, which is the same studio that created the Lycans in the Underworld trilogy.
  • The name of the character Sam is derived from Samhain, which is the ancient Celtic festival of the dead from which modern-day Halloween is derived. "Despite having been portrayed as such in this film and several other works, Samhain is not a deity or other personage of ancient Celtic polytheism; it is only the name of the celebration. However, the idea of being either a deity or other personage dates back to at least the late first century, largely thanks to an Irish bishop named Cormac mac Cuilennàin and his book "Sanas Cormaic" (Irish Gaelic for "Cormac's Narrative"), which had identified Samhain as such."
  • The Rock Quarry was originally conceived as a pumpkin patch, which would have been pretty awesome.
  • The film had several title changes before filming began. It was originally called Season's Greetings, like the short film it was based on. It was changed because it sounded too much like a Christmas film. Other titles it went through included Halloween Terrors, Jack O' Lantern Tales, October the 31st, and then finally eded up using Trick or Treat. There was already a movie of the same name, though, so they changed the spelling to Trick 'r Treat.
  • The look of Brian Cox's character, Mr. Kreeg, was based on John Carpenter, the director of horror classics Halloween and The Thing.
  • Mr. Kreeg says, "You gotta be fuckin' kidding," while Sam's severed hand runs across the floor. In 1982's The Thing, Palmer said the exact same line while Norris' head ran around the lab on spider legs, and Cox says the line exactly the same way.
  • Mrs. Henderson, who is the drunk teacher dressed as a cat, is a werewolf. She can be seen during the transformation scene and is also in the background with the group of werewolf girls in one scene.
  • The serial killer in the story, Steven Wilkins, seems to specialize in murdering children. This is actually one of the few horror movies where young children are shown being killed off in the story for real.

I also included the 1996 animated short film that Dougherty made that served as the inspiration of the movie. It also debuted the character of Sam. You can also watch the trailer for the movie below.

Death of Wolverine Variant Art - "Life after Logan"

I have a couple pieces of new Death of Wolverine variant comic cover art for you to check out today. The first piece (above) is called "Life after Logan," and it was created by Julian Totino Tedesco. The piece has a very somber feel to it, and it depicts four of the X-Men in mourning the death of their badass ally, and an image of him hangs over them in the clouds.

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso discussed the character's death in an interview with CBR.

"This is a long-term plan. He's dead. Our plans, well, let's just say that if they fans don't like a Wolverine-free Marvel Universe, we can't fix that quickly. [Editor] Mike [Marts] and his team have a very complex and exciting plan to fill the Wolverine-sized hole in the Marvel Universe… that better work out! [Laughs]"

I also included another cool piece of variant art for Death of Wolverine #4 that was created by Greg Land. It takes us through more of a history of the character.

Red-Band Trailer for Jason Momoa's WOLVES

red-band-trailer-for-jason-momoas-wolves

As far as red-band trailers for movies go, this one for Wolves isn't as red-band as I expected it to be, as there's there's just a bit of CG blood. The movie comes from David Hayter, the writer of X-Men and Watchmen, and stars Jason Momoa and Lucas Till

As much as I enjoy werewolves, this looks ridiculous. If Lifetime had made a werewolf movie, I imagine it would look something like this.

Popular high school student Cayden Richards wakes from a horrific nightmare, only to realize that he’s living it… He is changing into something vicious, unpredictable and wild. Forced to hit the road after the brutal murder of his parents, Cayden tries to hunt down the truth of what he is. In the remote, mountain town of Lupine Ridge, he discovers others like him — Including the beautiful Angelina, a young woman caught between two ancient clans of “wolves”. And when he finally discovers the shocking truth behind his ancestry, Cayden realizes there is only one way to save the woman he loves… A grisly fight to the death, against forces more savage than he could have ever imagined.

Wolves will be released VOD on October 16th and opens in theaters on November 14th. Thanks to IGN for the trailer.

James Earl Jones Returns as Darth Vader in STAR WARS REBELS

I couldn't be more excited to report that James Earl Jones is reprising his role as Darth Vader in Star Wars Rebels! How freakin' awesome is that?? I'm beside myself with excitement! Okay, that's enough exclamation points.

Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion was a fantastic start to the new series. The kids and I had a great time watching it, and it's only going to get better from here. The movie episode is currently making the rounds on iTunes, Amazon streaming, and Disney XD. It was also announced that ABC will broadcast an alternate version of Spark of Rebellion on Sunday, October 26th.

The coolest part about this ABC broadcast is that it will include a scene with Darth Vader, and that is when we will be able to hear the magically menacing voice of Jones as the villainous character again.

Here's the full press release with all the information that you need to know:

The critically-acclaimed epic adventure Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion will air on ABC on Sunday, October 26 (7:00 p.m. ET/PT). Executive Producer Dave Filoni states, "We wanted to do something special for the ABC broadcast. We've added a scene which gives audiences insight into the Inquisitor and includes a cameo by Darth Vader voiced by the distinguished actor James Earl Jones."

The television movie Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion delivered 6.5-million viewers in its premieres on Disney Channel and Disney XD around the world including the U.S. and 16 markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa and Canada. The Star Wars Rebels weekly series on Disney XD (Mondays 9:00 p.m. ET/PT), has been renewed for a second season.

Set between the events of Star Wars Episodes III and IV, the Star Wars Rebels story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet and are ruining the lives of its people. The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost – cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the "muscle" Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and grumpy old astromech droid Chopper – will face threatening new villains, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.

The voice cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus and Jason Isaacs as the Inquisitor.

Star Wars Rebels is created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sherlock Holmes), and Carrie Beck. The Lucasfilm Animation production is also executive-produced by Filoni and Kinberg as well as Greg Weisman (Gargoyles).

The second episode of Star Wars Rebels is called "Droids in Distress," and it's currently available as a free HD download here. The episode will feature a nod to Disneyland's Star Tours ride and some voice work by Paul Reubens

Rube Goldberg Machine Shows the "Power of Optics"

When I was a kid I was occasionally forced to participate in an “Invention Convention” run by my school district. You could either invent and build an actual thing, or you could just draw a Rube Goldberg machine. Guess which option I chose? The inciting incident was always the hardest thing to come up with. They were generally pretty lame, but that is not the case with this incredible Rube Goldberg contraption that was built by a Japanese Internet service provider called au Hikari. The machine uses a series of mirrors and lenses to focus light to set the various components in motion — it burns a string, pops a balloon, melts some ice, etc. The video is called “Power of Optics,” and I have no idea what it has to do with Internet service providing, but it is definitely cool. I have also included a video with look at the making of the short.

Action-Packed Sizzle Reel for Disney's BIG HERO 6

Disney has taken their animated action-adventure movie Big Hero 6 to New York Comic Con, which started today. They released the sizzle reel they showed at the event, featuring a ton of awesome action-packed new footage. It also offers us our best look yet at the rest of the fun superhero team that audiences will be introduced to in the story. It also includes a new song from Fall Out Boy called “Immortals.”

The film follows a brilliant robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada, "who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city."

This is the biggest movie that Disney animation has made, and it's going to be amazing. It's set to be released in theaters on November 7th.

Artificial intelligence is all around us. It's on our phones, it helps us search the web, it fights spam, and soon it could drive our cars. Movies, TV, and games have shown the next big leap in A.I., giving computers a personality and sentience. These computer intelligences have been portrayed with all the flaws and  strengths of humanity. These A.I. are reflections of ourselves.

The team at Glow New Media have pulled some of the most iconic quotes from A.I. across movies, TV, and games. The infogaphic is not a definitive list of fictional computers but an overview of A.I. — both good and evil.

Legolas' Poster for THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

legolas-poster-for-the-hobbit-the-battle-of-the-five-armies

Everyone's favorite Middle Earth elf, Legolas, is the latest character to be featured on a poster for The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies. The character has been played by Orlando Bloom since Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I think it is great that they were able to implement the character into this new Hobbit trilogy. He's obviously one of several characters who will help bridge the gap between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Warner Bros has previously released posters for GaladrielGandalf, and Bilbo.

The conclusion to the epic trilogy will be released on December 17th. Here's the synopsis:

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.
Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.
As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Dark and Gritty Live-Action Trailer for ADVENTURE TIME

adventure-time-gets-a-dark-and-gritty-live-action-trailer

Gritty Reboots has created an incredibly entertaining video that shows us what Cartoon Network's animated series Adventure Time would look like as a dark and gritty movie. This is one of the few cartoons that I actually enjoy watching with my kids from time to time. I especially enjoy its silly humor and imaginative storylines, and seeing it presented in this way is pretty awesome. It makes me wonder if we'll ever see a live action adaptation of this show. Every other cartoon seems to be getting a movie adaptation, so why not Adventure Time? Here's a short description that came along with the video.

Years later when magic in the Land of Ooo begins to fade, Finn and Jake must embark on one mommy of an adventure to save their world.

NYCC: FINAL FANTASY TYPE-0 HD Hands On Impressions

$

I've never overtly loved Final Fantasy. The gameplay is deep and strategic, but it never kept me coming back for more. I played 7-10, some of the tactics titles, and my favorite, Dirge of Cerberus, which some would probably disagree with, but Final Fantasy Type-0 HD may soon become my new favorite.

For those of you who don't know, Final Fantasy Type-0 was a PSP title only released in Japan, but in March 2015, the game will be released in the west for XBOX One and Playstation 4. I got a chance to play through a level, and let me tell you, it is a total blast.

The game consists of 14 playable characters with 3 being in your active party. Where this game differs from other titles in the series is the gameplay. The game is more a fast-paced hack and slash, aka an action oriented title, rather than the conventional turn based gameplay players have come to expect in Final Fantasy

The demo I played only had three characters available, but they were all so unique that I was surprised that the finished product will have 11 more. You see, with three characters the game already has enough depth to keep things fresh — you can switch between your three party members on the fly. I played as Ace (who is basically Gambit), who uses throwing cards, Seven, who used a chain whip, and Rem, who used two daggers. Each character has a unique ability on top of having a unique weapon system.

The combat system is great and has a lock-on system, which, if used well, can kill your enemies in a quicker manner. The lock-on crosshair will sporadically go from blue (normal), yellow (critical hit), to red (auto-kill). This adds a layer of strategy as you can learn to time your attacks well. On top of that, the enemies you face will sometimes have a commander with them. If you can kill the commander before the other enemies, the rest will surrender, and you can get items from them. At one point I gained the ability to summon a monster/demon that one of your party members will turn into. The amount of power you have while a demon is absolutely crazy. You can basically level the battlefield, but you're a little slower. You can also turn into the monster then switch to one of the other party members, thus keeping your quick movement while the computer controlled demon wreaks havoc around you.

Now, the game is pretty, but it is apparent that it used to be a PSP title. But the wide range of colors is a nice change of pace from the abundant amount of brown and gray color schemes we find in so many games today.

The camera can get a little annoying. Especially if you use the lock-on system for prolonged periods of time, the camera can make you feel as if you're cornered when in fact you have a ton of free room to move around in.

All in all, I am very excited for Final Fantasy Type-0's release. The game is frenetic and adrenaline pumping, and I can't wait to mix and match the 14 characters to create the ultimate squad.

X-Men Art by Oscar Römer - Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Cyclops

Artist Oscar Römer created this incredibly cool series of X-Men character art. They include Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Cyclops. The designs are really cool, and I especially like what he did with the costumes. They are different from any of the other character designs that I think I've seen. Just for the hell of it, I threw in another piece featuring Doctor Octopus. Römer is a talent concept artist who should be doing stuff for these kinds of movies if he isn't already. I was just looking over his Wolverine design hoping that one day we get to see Hugh Jackman in some kind of Wolverine-style costume.
