STAR WARS Toy Documentary PLASTIC GALAXY Is Currently Streaming

Like many of you, I grew up playing with Star Wars toys. I have a lot of fond memories creating my own Star Wars adventures with those toys. Good hell, I wish I hadn't lost them all. They also made George Lucas a shit ton of money! Lucas famously sacrificed a big portion of his salary on the original film in exchange for rights to any Star Wars sequels and merchandising.

A documentary has been released called Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys, which "explores the groundbreaking and breathtaking world of Star Wars toys. Through interviews with former Kenner employees, experts, authors, and collectors, it looks at the toys’ history, their influence, and the fond and fervent feelings they elicit today."

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but it looks great, and I will be checking it out. The doc was directed by Brian Stillman, and it is currently streaming on Vimeo, so you can watch it whenever you want. I also included a 13-minute sneak peek and a trailer for you to watch below.

Violently Fun PORTAL Gun Duel Action Short

I've got an incredibly cool short film for you to check out that feature a Portal gun duel, and it's entertainingly action-packed. There's also a lot of humor that was thrown into it. The video comes from YouTube user RackaRacka, and it came with the following caption: "Its [sic] man VS man in this portal gun battle to the death. Don't play with guns!!!" It features two friends who just go absolutely ballistic on each other with their Portal guns. It gets pretty insane and violent. It's definitely worth a watch if you a looking for a little entertainment.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Rumors - New Stormtroopers, Droids, and Lightsaber

The Star Wars: Episode VII rumors continue to roll in! There's a ton of stuff out there right now. There's a big huge spoiler that hit the internet yesterday that I've been avoiding, and I won't post it because even I have my limits. I don't want to know how the movie ends! The following rumors I've included in this article are minor, but cool.

We have a scene description from the film that features a new droid, a lightsaber, and apparently there's also another kind of Stormtrooper that we will see in the movie. Let's start out with that scene description which comes from Making Star Wars.

SPOILER WARNING:

Nighttime under the cover of darkness. Four characters convene.
Imagine the next generation of R2 unit. A jump as drastic as the Return of the JediStormtrooper to the Star Wars: Episode VII Stormtrooper. Sleeker, more futuristic, yet somehow still a little bit 1950s with a dash of Art Nouveau included.
The droid is smaller than R2-D2 and Chopper. His head is just above the knee, but not quiet to the hip, he’s tiny. His head is silver like Artoo-Detoo but his markings are redorange (Note: I originally reported the droid’s markings as being red, but I should have said orange). He has a single eye and two antennas on the top of his head. His neck has a black covering that kind of accordions when he looks around and connects to his body. He is similar to something you might see in Wall-E mixed with one of the senate cams in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.  He has a holographic projector in the same place as Artoo-Detoo as well. His head looks up.
He’s cute but kind of sad looking in a way.
Standing next to him we have an alien. He’s slightly taller. His face reminds me of Station from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. His eyes are just black and tiny, his mouth is almost a round snout which is sort of like an armadillo. His skin is a darker brown color but in this image it appears blue from the light. He has a towel on his head and his costume appears to be similar to a kimono.
In the foreground, Daisy Ridley’s character Kira stands startled as a character ignites a lightsaber and it is very clear this is an unexpected occurrence and all the characters are startled by the enigmatic beam emitting from the lazer sword just turned on accidentally. John Boyega’s character has the lightsaber in hand as the characters all look on amazed.
Kira’s discovery is further enhanced by Boyega’s character’s discovery. This could be one of the most memorable sequences from the next trilogy of Star Wars films.

Now we will move on to the Chrome Stormtrooper Commander, which comes from the same source:

About a week ago we posted a photo of what the Chrome Stormtooper will look like in the movie. The image showed the Stormtrooper wearing a cloak. According to the new description that cloak has been removed. They then go on to describe the leader of these Chrome Troopers, saying,

This leader may be played by Gwendoline Christie. But I can’t sure, that’s the prevailing rumor for now. There are old rumors the character was male and then became female after we fans voiced our concern about the cast being primarily male (which is totally unverified and we were hearing Games of Thrones connections well before the casting announcement anyhow).

The top of the Chrome Stormtrooper commander’s head is not unlike a TIE-Fighter/AT-AT driver helmet. The eyes are more like a classic Stormtrooper’s eyes as opposed to theStar Wars: Episode VII Stormtrooper’s visor look. There’s a chance this changed but with what I looked at, it was like the classic Stormtrooper. The left side of the helmet has a communication type device that moves down and isn’t on the ride side of the helmet. The part underneath the head helmet, the face area, reminds me of a folded napkin  (with a Stormtrooper face printed on it) if that makes sense. It doesn’t have the rounded trim at the bottom like the classic Storntrooper, it’s almost like Darth Vader’s mask in a way.

The center of the helmet is black, where the commander’s forehead would be and its kind of like a really tamed centurion (like the AT-AT driver). The armor is very much like the new Stormtrooper chest piece. The character wears a black cape with red lining on the inside.

The last thing we'll give you is an art description from the movie that showcases a wampa claw lightsaber!

A wampa claw lightsaber. Imagine a wampa claw and the lightsaber fits into the talon. It has a red button on the side. There are two different saber designs that aren’t that far part in differences (one has etching on the nail and the other doesn’t).

This sits at the side of the Chrome Stromtrooper Commander’s right side on a utility belt while the cape flows freely behind him or her in the wind.

What the hell?! I wish I could see this thing for myself so I can comprehend what the design actually looks like. This movie can't get here soon enough. There's so much awesome stuff leaking, and I know it annoys some people, but it gets me even more excited.

Unusually Freaky Alien Mind Control Mask

With Halloween right around the corner it's that time when people start looking for costumes. I came across this freaky cool "Alien Mind Control Mask" that makes it look like your head has been ripped off and replaced with an alien in a command chair controlling your body. I'm not sure why they call it a mind control mask, though, because with a removed head, you don't really have a mind anymore. The mask comes from The Horror Dome, and it costs $98.

Robert Downey Jr. Wants Mel Gibson to Direct IRON MAN 4

robert-downey-jr-wants-mel-gibson-to-direct-iron-man-4

Deadline just posted a fun interview with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., and in it the actor agrees that he would star in Iron Man 4 if Mel Gibson directs it. Here's how that conversation went down:

DEADLINE: Marvel badly wants Iron Man 4 and you’ve said you aren’t doing it. How about the idea you’ll do that movie if Mel directs it?

DOWNEY: Correct.

DEADLINE: Is that our headline?

DOWNEY: Why not? That movie would be bananas.

Now before you think that he's saying this just to say it, Downey is 100% serious. He and Gibson have been friends for years, and later in the interview he says that Gibson has "fundamentally changed." With a past like Downey Jr. has, he is also the kind of guy who believes in second chances.

There's nothing official about this, but the thought of it is exciting. I'm a huge fan of Gibson's work. The guy is insanely talented, and an Iron Man film directed by him would be incredible. I think Marvel needs to strongly consider this scenario. What do you think about the idea of Gibson directing Iron Man 4?

GUNDAM Art Series by Daniel Kamarudin

In the past we’ve posted Gundam cosplay, a seven foot Gundam made of paper, and a sixty foot tall Gundam in Tokyo, but in all my searching, we have not posted anything about a Gundam movie. Pacific Rim was a giant robot movie that didn’t do well domestically but did do well enough to warrant a sequel. I’m not sure why we have a Battleship movie and a Tetris movie but not a live-action Gundam movie.

Daniel Kamarudin, aka theDURRRRIAN, has been featured on GeekTyrant before. He created the Avengers as medieval fantasy warriors artwork. Today we are featuring five of his Gundam art pieces that could be great concept art for a movie.

Marvel and Netflix have revealed their logo for the Daredevil series that they are currently shooting in New York. They just kept it classic, which I like. The series will be making a big splash at New York Comic Con later this month. There will be a signing event at the con on Saturday, October 11th from 3:45-4:45 p.m. ET at the Marvel Booth (#1354). Here are the additional details:

For the first time, Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) will meet with fans. All fans who participate in this signing will also receive an exclusive "Marvel's Daredevil" production concept art poster, drawn by Marvel Chief Creative Officer and legendary artist Joe Quesada.
"Marvel's Daredevil" follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell's Kitchen, New York City.
Marvel's first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus," "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," "Angel") and Drew Goddard ("Cabin in the Woods," "Lost," "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," in addition to writing the first two episodes of "Marvel's Daredevil"), along with Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb ("Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Smallville," "Heroes").
"Marvel's Daredevil" is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

While we wait to see what writer and director Alex Kurtzman's Venom movie will be like, here's a sinister CG illustration featuring the classic Spider-Man villain to tide us over. I'd love to see some of the actual concept designs that are being created for the movie. The piece was created by Ljabli Salim, and I would absolutely love to see this version of Venom on the big screen. Make sure to check out some of the artist's other art here.

Watch the First Clip from ARROW Season 3

Arrow returns for a third season next week, and my DVR is set. Today we have a clip from the premiere episode to pique your interest. In the wake of last season’s takeover of Queen Consolidated, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) is working at Tech Village, where her skills are obviously woefully underutilized, especially her skill of wearing fierce pencil skirts. Luckily, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) still has some odd jobs for her to do, and maybe they are also dating. That is going to piss off our friend Mick Joest, who had a lot of words to write on the subject last year. I’m sure that whatever happens between them won’t last too long for now. We know Ollie is a disaster with the ladies, and he is going to be busy trying to get his company back — and fighting Ra's al Ghul.

Here is a synopsis of the season opener:

With crime in Starling City at an all-time low thanks to the Arrow and his team, Oliver thinks he can finally balance being both the Arrow and Oliver Queen and asks Felicity out on a date. However, when a new villain (guest star Peter Stormare) emerges, who has claimed the name Vertigo from the recently deceased Count, Oliver is caught off-guard and someone close to him is hurt. Oliver and a newly suited up Roy take on the Count. Meanwhile, Diggle becomes a father, Lance is promoted to Captain, Laurel joins Arrow’s inner circle and Felicity gets a part-time job at a tech store to make ends meet. Also, Oliver fights to regain his company, Queen Consolidated, but comes up against a very worthy opponent – the charming Ray Palmer.

Season three of Arrow premieres Wednesday, October 8.

Batman Art Series by Sean Gordon Murphy

Sean Gordon Murphy does amazing Batman art. We’ve featured his work a couple times before with Batman vs The Joker and another series of eight Batman art pieces. Murphy’s line work and use of contrast renders the Dark Knight as a tough, brawl-ready ninja. In all of the pieces Batman looks older and streetwise, unlike the cleanly armored new DC 52 Batman. I would love to see an animated Batman movie done in Muphy's gritty style.

New Trailer for Stephen Hawking Biopic THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

A new trailer has been released for the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. The film stars Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), and it looks like it could win him an Oscar nomination. It really looks like it would be a challenging role for anyone to take on, but Redmayne seems to just disappear into it. It's really amazing to see. In an interview with Yahoo, the actor said,

"The story of Stephen dwarfs the illness. For him, it is of no importance. He didn’t ever want to see a doctor again after he was diagnosed. He is someone that lives forward and lives optimistically. So, for me, what this film was about was an unconventional love story, a film about loving in all its guises."

The film was directed by James Marsh (Man on Wire), and it also stars Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney, and David Thewlis.

Inspired by the memoir "Travelling to Infinity: My life with Stephen" written by his ex-wife Jane Hawking, the film tells the story of one of the world's greatest living minds who falls deeply in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received an earth-shattering diagnosis of ALS at 21 years of age. With Jane fighting by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed.

Focus Features will give the film a limited release starting on November 7th.

Check out this adventurous movie score mashup that combines the climatic trench run scene from George LucasStar Wars with the climactic score from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot. The video was edited together by Ronen V, and they compliment each other nicely. The creator of the video says the "sync is uncanny," and I'd have to agree with him. This video turned out really well.

Adam Sandler and Netflix Team Up for 4 Four Movies

Adam Sandler has teamed up with Netflix to develop four feature films that will be distributed exclusively on the digital platform. Sandler has been in a movie slump recently. I think the last decent film that he starred in was Judd Apatow's Funny People, but I am looking forward to seeing him in the upcoming film Pixels, which he is currently shooting.

Netflix seems like it would be a fun a creative place for him to develop projects, and I hope he uses it as an opportunity to tell good, quality stories in all kinds of different genres. I do love the reason Sandler agreed to work with them.

"When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only….Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks. Let the streaming begin!!!!"

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added,

"People love Adam's films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages -- everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line -- not just in the US but all over the world."

Sandler's production company Happy Madison Productions will work alongside Netflix to develop the four films, and none of the current studio film commitments are included in the deal.

1960s BATMAN Series Villain Art - Joker, Penguin, and Riddler

The original Batman TV series was always fun to watch. I grew up watching that show, but I haven't seen it in a long time. These villain portraits featuring the Joker, Penguin, and Riddler bring back some nostalgic memories. I love these characters, and they were played brilliantly by Cesar RomeroBurgess Meredith, and Frank Gorshin respectively. The illustrations were created by Orlando Arocena for Blurppy's Poster Posse. If you look into their eyes, you'll see the bat symbol glimmering in them. Here's what the artist said about them,

"I decided to shift gears with this particular vector tribute. Its a portrait – based parody- consisting of the villains from ARKHAM poking fun at Batman. Dressed in the Batman period from my earliest memories…the 1960’s TV show.  Keep both eyes open, this tribute might get pretty lengthy."

SAW 10th Anniversary Re-Release Trailer and Poster

Lionsgate is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the theatrical release of James Wan's Saw by re-releasing it in theaters for one week this Halloween. This movie was awesome, it had a very fresh and original concept that was executed brilliantly. Unfortunately, it became one of those film franchises that seemed to get progressively worse with every new sequel they made. We'll always have the original though. Regardless of that, all the films have made over $874 million at the box office worldwide, and according to the Guinness Book of World Records it's the most successful horror franchise of all time.

Saw will return to theaters starting on October 31th, and in the days leading up to the re-release, five new posters will be unleashed. Fandango has the first poster and trailer for the event.

AMC has released three "Hunt or Be Hunted" promo teasers for The Walking Dead Season 5. Each one focuses on a different character from the series — Michonne, Rick, and Maggie. The spots may be really short, but they still do a good job at getting fans pumped up for the upcoming season. I also included a featurette that includes the cast and crew teasing the characters and locations we'll see in a few weeks. The series returns October 12th.

This Western Batman cosplay was created and worn by Johnny Hybrid of Hybrid Cosplay, and it's pretty damn cool. Then we have Yami Let as a western style Robin. There are a lot of great details in these outfits, and I love that Batman is carrying a whip around with him. The cosplay photos were taken by MineralBLU. It's always cool to see characters like Batman reimagined in different moments in history. This isn't the first time that we've seen a western Batman either. Everything Wrong with GODZILLA

Even though I loved Gareth Edwards' recent Godzilla reboot, it wasn't without its noticeable flaws. The gang over at Cinema Sins takes aim at the movie in their latest "Everything Wrong" video, and fires. They point out 116 sins. They make good points on some of them and are very nit-picky on others, but that's just how Cinema Sins rolls.

Godzilla (2014) was a much better film than the last Godzilla we got, (1998), but it's still full of sins, beginning with its misleading title.

Netflix has announced a new CG animated series based on the legendary King Kong. The series will be called Kong - King of the Apes, and it will tell a very different story than what we are use too. According to EW the show is set in 2050. Here's a description of the story:

Kong becomes a wanted fugitive after wrecking havoc at Alcatraz Island’s Natural History and Marine Preserve. What most humans on the hunt for the formidable animal don’t realize, though, is that Kong was framed by an evil genius who plans to terrorize the world with an army of enormous robotic dinosaurs. As the only beast strong enough to save humanity from the mechanical dinos, Kong must rely on the help of three kids who know the truth about him.

The series is bring produced by Avi Arad (Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men), and it will be geared toward kids. They will kick it off with a feature-length film in 2016, which will then be followed by 12 half-hour episodes. Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement,

“We’re thrilled to be working with Avi who has made some of the most successful action and adventure franchises today and whose Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventure series has been very popular on Netflix around the world. With 41 Entertainment as our partner on this, we continue to work with some of the finest animation studios around the world to create shows that will appeal to kids of all ages globally.”

Arad said,

“I always loved King Kong. This is a unique opportunity to introduce him in brilliant CGI animation to kids worldwide with the power of Netflix.”

This sounds like it will be a fun show to watch with the kids. I'm not sure if my girls are into King Kong though.

The Mad Max sequels don't seem to get as much love as the original film when it comes to fan art, but artist Chris Weston took on the challenge of giving fans an amazing illustration for Mad Max 2. It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, but it was pretty damn spectacular, and it is worth revisiting. This is the same artist that brought us The Good, The Bad and The Ugly poster art last week.
