INDIANA JONES 5 Has a Cinematographer

indiana-jones-5-has-a-cinematographer

It looks like Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing to move forward with a fifth Indiana Jones film. We knew it would eventually happen, and they are getting closer to making it a reality. It seems the studio has already hired a cinematographer to shoot the film, and that cinematographer's name is Janusz Kaminski. He has made several films with director Steven Spielberg.

Variety recently posted an article about an online filmmaking course being offered by cinematographers, and this short little paragraph was thrown in there:

"Since then, Kaminski has made more than a dozen films with Steven Spielberg, earning two Oscars along the way. His credits include Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and The Diving Bell & the Butterfly. His next project is the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones movie."

It's really no surprise that Kaminski will be working on Indiana Jones 5, but the fact that it will be his next project is very interesting. That means it's already on his schedule, but it doesn't say when that will be. We've previously heard that Harrison Ford is open to coming back and reprising his role and that he was actually in negotiations with the studio at one point.

There's no word on whether Spielberg will come back to direct, but it wouldn't be a proper Indiana Jones movie without him. We'll just have to wait and see how this all pans out. Regardless of the awfulness of the last Indiana Jones movie, I'm still excited to see what they will do with this fifth installment.

Watch Miles Teller Drum with The Roots

If you are a regular reader of GeekTyrant, you may have noticed that we are all in love with a little movie called Whiplash. We cannot sing its praises enough. It is about a student at a conservatory who will do anything it takes to become a great drummer and his teacher, who pushes his students until they break. Miles Teller plays the student, and while he was promoting the movie on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night, he decided to show off some of his drumming skills. He is not bad.

Directed by Damien Chazelle, Whiplash also stars J.K. Simmons and opens in theaters on October 10. You can watch a trailer here, if you're curious.

Disney Princesses Reimagined as Piles of Rocks

I thought this was hilarious and I just couldn't help but share this. We've posted a lot of Disney princess art over the years, but never have we seen them reimagined as piles of rocks. The set of illustrations comes from DeviantArt user kevinbolk, who says,

"In which I harness the whole of my geo-artistic genius to reimagine the Disney Princess as a big ol' pile o' rocks. You've never seen them like THIS before. Mind blown! ;P"

I hope this gives you a little laugh like it did for me. I know this is absolutely absurd, and that's why I posted it.

ANGRY BIRDS Movie Gets an All-Star Voice Cast

Sony Animation has put together a pretty awesome voice cast for the Angry Birds movie they're developing. Jason Sudeikis will lead the cast as Red in the film, and it will co-star Josh Gad as speedy Chuck, Danny McBride as the volatile Bomb, Bill Hader as a pig, Maya Rudolph as Matilda, and Peter Dinklage as the Mighty Eagle. Other cast members include Kate McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, Cristela Alonzo, Jillian Bell, Latin musician Romeo Santos, and Smosh YouTube stars Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla.

Producer John Cohen had this to say in a statement:

“I’m extremely proud of this cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent — these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re thrilled to have them all on board.”

Dwight Caines, president of theatrical marketing at Sony first unveiled the cast to users of the video game app, and said:

“Our filmmakers are cooking up a hilarious movie, and we know these fans can’t wait to see how they’re going to bring the Angry Birds’ story to life on the big screen of movie theaters.”

The movie is set to be released on July 1st, 2016, and I imagine that it's going to blow up at the box office. Millions upon millions of people love Angry Birds, and they all seem very excited about the movie. I've never been into Angry Birds, but with this cast of talent they should manage to turn it into a great movie.

Chewbacca Dog Is Han’s Best Friend

It’s a Wookiee small enough to hold! And it’s one that won’t rip your arms off. This Brussels Griffon makes a fine mini Chewbacca. All the dog needed to be transformed into Han Solo’s trusty companion was a bandolier strapped around his chest and to have his hair teased out a little. That sure beats the atrocious costumes many dog owners subject their pups to for Halloween.

FX has released the opening title sequence for American Horror Story: Freak Show. I love what they did with it. That terrifying, carnival, nightmarish vibe is fantastically creepy. Like the title sequences for past seasons, this one is filled with wonderfully disturbing visuals that are now seared into my brain forever. Fans of the series are really going to love this one. I also included a new full trailer that features lots of actual footage from the next chapter in the horror anthology series.

American Horror Story: Freak Show begins its tale in the quiet, sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida. The year is 1952. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience.

The series returns on October 8th.

GOTHAM ACADEMY Creators Talk About Its Origin

$

Gotham Academy is a new title from DC Comics that finally deals with a question I know we’ve all had — especially while watching The Dark Knight — what is it like to grow up in Gotham? There is the mob scene, plus a bunch of strange, costumed criminals constantly breaking out of the insane asylum and running amok, and a really, really rich dude* who dresses up like a bat and tries to fight the tidal wave of crime. That has got to lead to a messed up childhood and adolescence, right? Written by Becky Cloonan and Brendan Fletcher with art by Karl Kerschl, Gotham Academy #1 hit shelves today, and it sounds wicked fun. Read the official synopsis, then watch this video interview with the creative team at Comic-Con.

WELCOME TO GOTHAM ACADEMY! Gotham City’s most prestigious prep school is a very weird place. It’s got a spooky campus, oddball teachers, and rich benefactors always dropping by...like that weirdo Bruce Wayne. But nothing is as strange is the students!
Like, what’s up with Olive Silverlock? Is she crazy or what? Where did she go last summer? And what’s the deal with her creepy mom? And how come that Freshman MAPS is always following her around? And is she still going out with Kyle? P.S. Did you hear the rumor about the ghost in the North Hall?!
GOTHAM ACADEMY is a new, monthly teen drama set in the shadow of Batman and the craziness of Gotham City, with new characters and old plus a secret tie to Gotham’s past…

*Yes, I know that Batman’s real identity is a secret, but you’d still be able to guess that whoever was behind the mask was hella rich, right?

Ben Affleck on the BATMAN V SUPERMAN and STAR WARS Hijinks

ben-affleck-on-the-batman-v-superman-and-star-wars-hijinks

Over the last couple of months fans have been treated to some friendly hijinks between Zack Snyder and J.J. Abrams for their films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars: Episode VII. It all started when Snyder posted an image of Henry Cavill as a Sith Lord, Abrams fired back with C-3PO as the Dark Knight, we then got an image of Batman with R2-D2, followed by The Gotham City Police arresting a Stormtrooper. The last one came from Abrams sticking a Batmobile on the bottom of the Millennium Falcon.

In a recent interview, Ben Affleck revealed how all of this awesomeness we've been enjoying got started. This is what he told Yahoo:

“I think it was started because JJ [Abrams] and Colin Anderson, who is a great [camera] operator who always works on my movies, and JJ is always trying to steal, and I’m trying to steal back, sent me a picture of the two of them wearing cheap Batman masks. I showed it to Zack [Snyder], and said ‘this is bullshit, we have to do something'. I think it’s cool. The sort of meta-awareness of these movies, and the two directors going back and forth… I like it, it’s cool."

It is cool, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next!

Short Film Uses Actual Cosmonaut Distress Sound Clip - KOSMONAUTA

actual-cosmonaut-distress-sound-clip-used-to-make-this-short-film-kosmonauta

Kosmonauta is a stunning and haunting short film that gives us a visualization of an actual sound clip recovered in 1962 on a soviet space frequency. It features a distress call from a female cosmonaut, and it "gave rise to the theory of the (lost) first female cosmonaut."

This project was made by Mirjam Veske (Production Designer) and Nils Eilif Bremdal (Cinematographer). After finishing their exam films at the Norwegian Film School they teamed up for this final project before graduating from the film school. They worked as a Production Designer and Cinematographer, but made all directorial decisions together all through the production process. Accompanied by Thomas Grotmol (Editor) and Vegard Soldal (Sound Designer) and fellow students and friends, the film has been a great collaborative experience.

This short is evocative and extremely well-made. It's a fascinating watch, and it actually gave me an upsetting feeling while watching it. I applaud it for that. I love it when a movie brings out emotions like that.

WWE 2K15 - NXT Announced As My Career Mode

WWE 2K15 brings with it many changes, and the newest change is the just announced "My Career Mode." The new mode will fully incorporate WWE's developmental brand, NXT, and will feature your created wrestler (who might bear an uncanny resemblance to DDP) moving up the ranks. While in developmental you will face rising stars such as Adrian Neville and Sami Zayn, though I do hope that will grow to include some of the really talented Divas on the roster, as wrestlers like Charlotte and Bayley are huge draws for NXT and deserve a place in the game. After you move up to the main roster, you will attempt to make your impact on Smackdown and Raw, and ultimately to compete at Wrestlemania.

Grasping the scripted nature of the WWE and translating it to a game has always been the most challenging part of these games, but hopefully 2K15 is on the right path to finally get that aspect right. This section of the press release got me the most interested however.

Decisions made throughout the WWE developmental process, including alliances, rivalries and social media interactions, will impact player personality traits and crowd reactions.

Social media is used a great deal in either perpetuating someone's good or bad reputation on tv or furthering ongoing storylines, so it's kind of cool to see the developers implementing this into the game. Guess we will have to wait and see if it all works out.

WWE 2K15 releases on Xbox One, PS4 on November 18th, and on PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 28th.

CineFix's latest "Homemade Movies" episode features a shot-for-shot sweded opening scene from Steven Spielberg's 1981 classic Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Welcome back special guest star and Homemade Movies creator Dustin McLean as we re-create one of the most beloved sequences in movie history… Indiana Jones’s narrow escape from the booby-trapped home temple in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This is a really fun episode and one of my favorites that they've created so far. Enjoy the entertainment! I also included a side-by-side comparison video.

First Look at Bradley Cooper in Clint Eastwood's AMERICAN SNIPER

Warner Bros. has given us our first look at Bradley Cooper in director Clint Eastwood's upcoming military drama American Sniper. The movie is based on the memoir of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, and Cooper said in an interview with USA Today that he would do everything he could to tell Kyle's the best way he could.

"Thank God I got to talk to him once on the phone. It was a very quick conversation. But I did tell him how serious I was about making this movie. And he should just know that whatever fears he had about Hollywood, to just put them aside and trust me. That I was going to do everything I could to tell this story."

He went on to talk about his meeting with Kyle's family.

"I had to do right by him and his family, there was really no choice. You're sitting across the dining-room table talking to this person's father and mother. And his children and wife are there. And he's passed away. Knowing that they are putting all of their stories in your hands and the responsibly of that, it's actually unique."

The book of Kyle's experiences is officially described as follows:

He is the deadliest American sniper ever, called "The Devil" by the enemies he hunted and "The Legend" by his Navy SEAL brothers. From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States Military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more then 150 of Kyle's kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him Al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned a legendary status among his fellow SEALS, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, who he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle's masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences of all time.
A native Texan who learned to shoot on childhood hunting trips with his father, Kyle was a champion saddle-bronc rider prior to joining the Navy. After 9/11, he was thrust into the front lines of the War of Terror, and soon found his calling as a world-class sniper who performed best under fire. In Fallujah, where he recorded a personal-record 2,100-yard kill shot, Kyle braved heavy fire to rescue a group of Marines trapped on the street; in Ramadi, he stared down insurgents with his pistol in close combat. Kyle talks honestly about the pain of war-of twice being shot and experiencing the tragic deaths of two close friends.

I love these kinds of films; I'm a huge fan of Eastwood's work; Cooper is an amazing actor; and I am very much looking forward to seeing this film. American Sniper lands in theaters in a limited release December 25th, expanding January 16th, 2015.

Disney has released a clip from their upcoming Shaun of the Dead themed episode of Phineas and Ferb, which features Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reprising their roles of Ed and Shaun.

The episode is called "Night of the Living Pharmacists," and it is obviously inspired by the classic zombie movie, Night of the Living Dead. In the episode, "Doofenshmirtz's latest "-inator" accidentally turns the citizens of Danville into contagious Doof-zombies who run rampant all over town."

The episode also includes the voices of George Romero, Noah Wyle, Bella Thorne, Ariel Winter, and Cloris Leachman. The one-hour episode airs Saturday, October 4th at 8pm on Disney Channel. It looks like it going to be a really fun episode.

Mind-Blowingly Realistic CG Animated Face Video

I'm in awe after watching this video of a fully CG animated face. It was created by Chris Jones, and it's stunningly realistic. The video is called "Ed," and it is a work in progress. Jones used Lightwave, Sculptris, and Krita composited with Davinci Resolve Lite to create the visual. I came across the video on Gizmodo, which makes a point of saying, "I can even believe he has a soul behind those eyes." That's something I can agree with. Watch the video for yourself, it's so well done that it kind of freaks me out a little.

INTERSTELLAR Advanced 70mm Film Screenings and Featurette With Physicist Kip Thorne

Christopher Nolan's Interstellar will be released two days early  — on November 5th — in 70mm format across 240 theaters and select 70mm IMAX theaters. I had no idea that there are still so many 70mm theaters left, as it seems like every theater I've gone to in the last 5 years has been digital (including IMAX). Nolan, a proponent of film both as a shooting and presentation format, is really flexing his studio clout with these screening. There will also be 35mm screening, but for me it's 70mm all the way.

We also have a featurette with physicist Kip Thorne, who consulted on Interstellar.

Interstellar opens in film formats November 5th and in digital theaters November 7th.

The Return of LOST Is "Inevitable" According to Carlton Cuse

the-return-of-lost-is-inevetible-according-to-carlton-cuse

Here's some intriguing news that might spark some excitement in you. According to executive producer and co-writer of the hit TV series LOST, Carlton Cuse, the return of the sci-fi drama is "inevitable."

It's been 10 years since the series premiered, and four years since the season finale, but he doesn't think we've seen the last of the island. Cuse explains why in a recent interview with Digital Spy:

"Disney owns the franchise, it made them a lot of money, it’s hard to imagine it will just sit there idly forever.

"Damon (Lindelof) and I told our story in that world and I assume someone will come along, hopefully having been inspired by our story, or our version of the story, and want to tell their own story.

"It’s like the Narnia chronicles. There are seven books, they were all written by CS Lewis, but they all visit Narnia at different times and different configurations and different ways.

"Someone is going to come up with a way to tell another Lost story. I think it’s inevitable. I don’t know what it is or how it would work, but I can’t imagine something else won’t be done with the franchise."

I never really thought of seeing the return of LOST, but the way he explains how it is possible has definitely opened my mind to the idea. I'd actually really like to see something like that happen now. I loved LOST, and if someone came up with a new great story to tell set in that world, I'd watch it.

STAR WARS — Mark Hamill in 1983 Talking About Episode VII

In a 1983 video, Mark Hamill talks about a new Star Wars trilogy. In it he says that it would be shot in approximately 2011 and have Luke Skywalker handing the torch to the next generation in the same way Obi-Wan Kenobi did in A New Hope.

More food for thought: Mark Hamill is now the same age Alec Guinness was in A New Hope.
