DEAD RISING Movie Details Revealed

dead-rising-movie-details-revealed

Legendary Pictures is currently in the process of developing a digital feature film based on Capcom's zombie survival video game Dead Rising. The movie is being directed by Zach Lipovsky (Leprechaun: Origins) who recently did an interview with /Film. During that interview he revealed a good amount of details on what he's planning for the film.

Before we get into those details, here's the cast of the movie that was announced yesterday. Jesse Metcalfe (John Tucker Must Die, Desperate Housewives, Dallas), Meghan Ory (Once Upon A Time, Intelligence), Virginia Madsen (Sideways, Candyman, The Number 23), Dennis Haysbert (24, The Unit), and Keagan Connor Tracy (Bates Motel, Once Upon A Time, Battlestar Galactica).

Dead Rising may seem like it will be just another zombie film, but the director explains how this one will set itself apart from the other zombie films and TV shows,

"I think the franchise actually brings a lot of new energy to the genre that we haven’t seen in a zombie movie. The idea that you can be bitten and remain human as long as you take your medicine everyday, is very interesting and dramatic. Similar to the social stigma of living with HIV.

"Another very cool element from the game is the zombies remember a little bit about their previous lives. There is something really haunting about seeing a zombie cop randomly firing his gun, or a zombie mom pushing a stroller.

"Finally what I love in Dead Rising is the city is locked down, but the rest of the world is fine. Families are watching the zombie apocalypse on TV while eating dinner like it’s the Super Bowl. We’re taking a lot of inspiration from real world events like Hurricane Katrina, the Ebola outbreak even the Ferguson Riots."

The director goes on to explain that this will be an adventure movie, with dark and scary moments. When describing the tone he said it was Indiana Jones with zombies. "Fun, scary, dramatic action." When asked about the setting of the film, he revealed the following:

"The film is set in a new outbreak with new heroes, in a new city. So it’s not a direct adaptation of one of the previous games, but it does fit into the cannon of the storyline. It takes place between the Fortune City outbreak in Dead Rising 2 and Los Perdidos outbreak from Dead Rising 3. So it’s a part of the greater franchise narrative. Of course some familiar faces show up as well."

I'm glad that they are changing things up a bit for the movie, and not doing a direct adaptation. It will make things more interesting. You know what else makes movies like this more interesting? Lots of freakin' zombies to destroy!

"One zombie isn’t scary, a horde that you can’t get through without a chainsaw is very scary. We’re pulling every favor we can do have some monster zombie set pieces. The rest will be a matter of focusing on locations and situations where a smaller number in a confined space still has full effect. Some of the most exciting parts of the game are when you’re in a tiny room filled with zombies. Pretty much every person I know has already emailed me saying they want to be a zombie, so I think [we'll] be fine. We are also planning a long one take action shot with hundreds of zombies which I’m very excited about."

I know this is only going to be a digital feature, but I'm a big fan of the video game franchise, and I'm excited about watching the movie. If you want to read more from the interview, head on over to /Film. There he talks more about the process of making a digital feature, and what that means for fans.

Dead Rising is scheduled to start shooting on September 30th in Vancouver, and it will premiere exclusively on Crackle in the US. It will be distributed internationally in both episodic and feature format by Content Media Corp. After the movie has its run on Crackle it will then be released on SVOD, DVD, VOD and TV.

Jeff Goldblum Stars in Fantastically Wacky Lightbulb Commercial

This is seriously going to be the best thing you watch all day. It's a GE lightbulb commercial that stars Jeff Goldblum, and it's ridiculous and awesome in every way. This is Goldblum at his wackiest, and it will make you love him even more.

The lightbulb that the commercial is advertising sits in the shadow of Goldblum's greatness. However, they are $15 bulbs that last for 22 years. They can also be connected through a $20 hub, and controlled wirelessly from your smartphone. I'm sold… not because of the lights themselves, but because Goldblum is the best salesman on the planet.

Mind-Blowing METROID Cosplay by Talaaya

Cosplayer Talaaya has been working diligently for over 2 years to create the most amazing Samus Aran from Metroid cosplay I've ever seen. Talaaya used 3D printing, bondo, lots sanding, and paint to create it. You can read all about the 2 year journey of fabricating the suit and even download the files she created on her blog.

While not seen in these photos, it looks like the suit lights up. I've also attached a couple videos that show that the suit has a high degree of articulation. Well done, Talaaya. This is truly inspiring work.

Dominic Cooper Returning as Howard Stark in AGENT CARTER

It's been officially confirmed by Marvel that Dominic Cooper will reprise his role as Howard Stark in Marvel and ABC's upcoming series Agent Carter. Cooper played the character in Captain America: The First Avenger, and it's awesome that he'll be coming back for the series. I was hoping that they'd be able to bring him back into the fold.

Marvel's Agent Carter, starring Captain America's Hayley Atwell, follows the story of Peggy Carter. It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life--Steve Rogers.

The series is set to premiere in 2015, and it seems like it's shaping up to be a great show. It was really cool to see Agent Carter again at the beginning of Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2. It will be interesting to see if what happens in the era of Agent Carter affects the future of the cinematic universe.

Batman Theme Song Evolution by The Piano Guys

The Piano Guys take us on a wonderful journey through all of the theme songs that Batman has had over the past 50 years in both TV and film. They call it "Batman Evolution," and they perform the music in an atmosphere and with some of the Batmobiles that represent each of the productions.

"Holy hemiola, Batman! 50 years of music and film all rolled together in front of the cars that have become icons of super hero history. This is one of those projects we’ve wanted to do from the very beginning of The Piano Guys. We love super heroes, the dramatic music that has brought them to life, and the vivid films that have made them legends. We used piano, cello, handheld cameras, a radio controlled helicopter, and some scrappy special effect techniques in the most creative ways possible to emulate the three epic eras of one of the greatest super heroes ever created: BATMAN!"

It's really a stunning performance. I hope you enjoy it.

TETRIS Movie In Development

According to The Wall Street Journal, the classic 1980s video game Tetris in getting the feature film treatment. It will be really interesting to see how they actually plan on adapting this into a live-action movie.

The film is being produced by Threshold Entertainment and the Tetris Company, but as of this moment there are no directors or cast attached to the film. There is a story in place though! Threshold’s CEO Larry Kasanoff had this to say in a statement:

"It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes… Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind Tetris which makes it a much more imaginative thing."

To give you an idea of what we can expect, Kasanoff is the same guy who adapted the Mortal Kombat movies for the big screen. He goes on to explain that they aren't looking to limit the world of Tetris just to the big screen:

"We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness."

There are no other details on what he means by that, but I imagine it will be expended into several other forms of entertainment content. He concludes by saying:

"What you [will] see in Tetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance."

My curiosity is definitely sparked for this movie. I figured the story would just end up being about two moving guys trying to figure out the best way to fill up a moving van with the stuff in a house they are packing up.

Everything Wrong with David Fincher's FIGHT CLUB

First of all there's, nothing wrong with David Fincher's Fight Club. That movie is brilliant. But you can leave it up to the gang over at Cinema Sins to try to tear it down. Here's the thing though, people have apparently been asking for them to do it, so here it is.

Many of you have been asking for this for a while, so... hope you're happy. Because a whole bunch of other people are going to be sad now. But I digress... Like most movies, even Fight Club has some sins. We thought we'd list them for you.

Fincher's Gone Girl hits theaters this weekend, and I'm looking forward to it.

Ben Affleck on How THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Influenced BATMAN V SUPERMAN

Ben Affleck is currently doing the press tour for his new film Gone Girl, and he can't escape the questions about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That's got to be a little annoying for him, but he does throw a few little things here and there to make the fans happy. During an interview with MTV, the actor was asked about the influence of Frank MIller's The Dark Knight Returns on the film he's making, and he said,

"Yeah, I don't want to answer too many Batman questions because it is a Gone Girl thing, but I will say that I think Zack [Snyder] was heavily influenced by that. I think everyone's heavily influenced by that...that's the seminal work. So, I don't think that there's any of these which have been made that haven't drawn from that book because it's so good. So, you know, I think if you're smart you steal from the best. That's why I'm going to rip David [Fincher] off from now on everywhere I go!"

It seems like this new Batman film will be the movie that has been most heavily influenced by Miller's comic, though, which is great! I've always wanted to see that story brought to life, and this may be the closest we ever get to it. At one point in the interview, Affleck was asked to do the Batman that he's doing for the movie. To that he replied,

"Ah, you've gotta pay...that's IMAX money to see that!"

You can watch the video interview below. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to be released on March 25th, 2016.

9-Minute VFX Breakdown for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Last week, Fox released a special effects featurette for X-Men: Days of Future Past that gave us a look at some of the visual and practical effects behind the Quicksilver prison break sequence. That got me salivating for all of the extras that will be included in the Blu-ray, which is due out October 14th. Here is a 9-minute VFX breakdown by Digital Domain that probably won’t be included on the Blu-ray release, but that does give you a greater appreciation of all the movie magic that went into making Mystique morph, Magneto lift RFK Stadium, and Sentinels take over the White House.

New Preview and Photos from DOCTOR WHO's "Kill the Moon"

$

Here is a preview clip and some stills from the next episode of Doctor Who, titled “Kill the Moon.” You guys? I’m not super excited by it. The clip reveals that the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) have brought along Courtney Woods (Ellis George), the not-very-charming student we met in the last episode. It looks like the show is building to a recreation of super classic Who — an older Doctor traveling with two (married?) Coal Hill teachers and a teenaged Coal Hill student. That was the line-up of the First Doctor’s companions. It sounds cool in theory, but do we actually want a teenager stomping around the TARDIS? I love teen shows (read my bio below), but I would like them to stay well away from that blue box. Unfortunately, I am not in charge of these things. “Kill the Moon” also features giant moon spiders, and that is cool.

Here is the official synopsis.

In the near future, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) find themselves on a space shuttle making a suicide mission to the Moon. Crash-landing on the lunar surface, they find a mining base full of corpses, vicious spider-like creatures poised to attack, and a terrible dilemma. When Clara turns to the Doctor for help, she gets the shock of her life.

This hilarious supercut by Screen Junkies uses scenes from X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men The Animated Series (as well as some other surprise footage) to show that Professor X is a wimp. You would think that Professor Charles Xavier, a man who helps mutants learn to control their abilities and cope with a world that persecutes them, would be cool under pressure. He isn’t just a brilliant mind, he can control minds. He isn’t just a leader, he assembled one of the greatest superhero teams in history. But when 1970s Charles Xavier looks into the mind of a time-traveling Wolverine, he sees his future self whining, whimpering, and consistently dropping the ball.

Corey Stoll on Yellowjacket and ANT-MAN Beating Hulk

Here's a little Ant-Man news that has popped up from an interview conducted by Clever Movies at Comic-Con earlier this year. It was just one of those interviews that was overlooked in the whirlwind of geek madness. In it, actor Corey Stoll talks about his character, Yellowjacket, and even explains why he thinks Ant-Man could beat the Hulk. Why don't we start with that!

"It's so weird...if somebody were to [ask] 'What [super]power would you want?' you wouldn't say, 'I'd like to be able to shrink down to the size of an ant.' That seems like being the opposite of a superhero, but when you actually think about all the things you could do if you were that small, and you retained your full-size strength, you would be sort of unbeatable. Like, I think the Ant-Man could beat the Hulk. He could shrink down and go up his nose, and you know, crush his brain. How is the Hulk gonna beat the Ant-Man? He'd be chasing him around."

That would definitely be an interesting showdown, and he makes some good points. Who knows if we'll ever see that fight on the big screen. Stoll then went on to talk about what he loves about his Ant-Man character, Darren Cross, a.k.a. Yellowjacket.

"He is not a villain in the vein of Thanos or Loki, who are villains that know it. [Cross] is a guy who is not that dissimilar from Michael Douglas' character, Hank Pym. A brilliant scientist, who is not ethically pure. I think a great thing about the whole movie is that everybody in this movie is in those shades of gray a little bit. I think it will be a fun character to create."

Ant-Man is currently shooting and is set to be released on July 17th, 2015. I'm looking forward to seeing more from the movie. Peyton Reed is directing the film, which stars also stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, David Dastmalchian, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Abby Ryder Fortson, Judy Greer, Wood Harris, John Slattery, and Gregg Turkington

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Thanks to CBM for the heads up.

The Heads of Advertising by Dana Lechtenberg

The Heads of Advertising Series by Dana Lechtenberg is a series of giclee printed advertising mascot portraits that the artist created for a show at Reactor Design Studio. Cap'n Crunch, Frankenberry, Charlie Tuna, and Little Green Sprout make appearances here, along with a host of other mascots. Fankenberry is an oft-overlooked sentimental favorite of mine, so I was glad to see his inclusion. Who is your favorite?

Here is a statement about the artist’s inspiration:

“When I was about nine or ten...and I would go to the local Fareway grocery store with my mom in Decorah, Iowa...I would grab a brown paper bag from the big barrel of peanuts...sit in front of the cereal aisle...and draw the characters from the boxes. I believe that Frankenberry was my favorite. The kids around Spillville (population: three hundy) would also have me draw pictures of the Smurfs, Garfield and Popeye for them. That was a pretty mint time in my life (thanks, Super 8).”

Unfortunately, the show is over, but you can contact Lechtenberg directly if you’d like to buy any of his prints.

Great New Trailer Released for HORRIBLE BOSSES 2

Warner Bros. just released an all new trailer for Horrible Bosses 2, which stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Chris Pine, and Christoph Waltz. The sequel seriously looks like it's going to be hilarious, and I couldn't be more excited to see it. I love how this trailer starts, and it only gets better from there. There's a lot of new footage featured, and it gives us more insight into the story.

Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick, Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business in the sequel. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor's adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

Horrible Bosses 2 hits theaters on November 26th.

Evildoers and bullies, beware. Batman has got your back. Sure, he’s not nearly as stealthy or intimidating when wearing his old school blue and grey costume. And yes, he’s only 26 inches tall and made from polyester and foam. And, perhaps, with all the extra attention you’ll get from wearing a bright Batman doll as a backpack, you could possibly attract more bullies and muggers than if you were just wearing a regular backpack. It’s the Caped Crusader, though, and he can do anything… except hold your laptop in his little 12x9” pocket. Ok, so I guess Batman doesn’t have your back as much as he just holds your snacks.

The Batman Backpack Buddy is available from Superherostuff for $43.00. Thanks to Geek Alerts for sounding the alarm.
