DEADPOOL Movie Has an Official 2016 Release Date!

deadpool-movie-gets-an-official-2016-release-date

I never thought I'd see the day, but 20th Century Fox is moving forward with the long awaited Deadpool movie! They even set a release date for February 12th, 2016. I'm beside myself with excitement, and I can't believe that it's actually happening.

The movie will be released three months before Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Ryan Reynolds is expected to star in the film that is being directed by Tim Miller. I assume it will come from the same script that leaked online written by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

It wasn't too long ago that the insanely cool Deadpool test footage leaked online that got fans even more excited about seeing this movie get made. Reynolds actually talked about the leaked footage recently in an interview with Niagara Falls Review saying:

“There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, ‘Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.’ It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually. And it’s neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way.”

I'm happy it worked! I assume that even though FOX kept removing the video from the Internet, it was strategically released by someone close to the production to get a fan response. I'm so happy it worked, this is the best news I've heard in awhile.

In addition, Fox has moved around a few more release dates. Michael Fassbender's Assassin’s Creed went from August 7th, 2015 to not having a release date at all. The Fantastic Four reboot has also moved from June 19th, 2015 to the just vacated August 7th.

Artist Stephen Langmead has created a charming set of vintage looking female superhero pin-up art. The characters here include 1963's Wasp, 1941's Wonder Woman, 1956's Batwoman, 1965's Crystal from Inhumans, 1961's Sue Storm, and 1964's Scarlet Witch. I love that he went with the original costumes for these characters, and that he used the appropriate physiques for those eras.

Animation Test for Genndy Tartakovsky's POPEYE

animation-test-for-genndy-tartakovskys-popeye1

Samurai Jack creator and director of Hotel Transylvania, Genndy Tartakovsky, has been developing a CGI animated version of Popeye for a few years now for Sony Animation. He's finally revealed a little taste of what he is planning for the movie in an animation test that was released today. It's just a little something to show us what they are looking at doing, and the director made sure to point out, “it’s not a clip, it’s not a trailer, it’s nothing from the actual movie, the voices are all temp.”

The video also features some concept art from the film, and the director talks about why he's making the project:

"From a young child, I was really destined to make one movie, and that movie was Popeye. Even so much, that when I first started animation, my very first teacher was a 90-year-old Popeye animator from the Fleischer studios, Gordon Sheehan. So I feel like it’s destiny that’s brought me here to Sony Pictures Animation to make Popeye an animated feature."

He also gives some insight on the challenges of adapting this 1929 character for a modern day audience saying:

"Popeye more than anything else really embodies the physical humor, and the whole reason I do animation is to laugh at movement… We’ve been working on Popeye for a little while now and we wanted to really explore how Popeye would translate from the old ’30s cartoons and ’40s cartoons to today. To contemporize him without losing the heart and sincerity of what Popeye really is, and what he meant to me as a kid and as an adult.

Tartakovsky obviously has a very personal connection with the character. He's a great storyteller, and I think he'll be able to pull it off and make a film audiences will love. The project still has yet to get a green light from the studio, and he's hoping that by releasing this video it will spark some eagerness in the executives so that they will push it through. After seeing what they are doing here, I don't see why they wouldn't.

The script is still being written for the movie, but it will be an origin type story that will include all of the classic Popeye characters such as Olive Oyl, Bluto, the Sea Hag, Wimpy, Popeye’s dad, and even Eugene the Jeep.

This entertaining action-packed short film features the most insane and violent food fight that I've ever seen. It comes from YouTube user rizenvisual, and it features an all out war with food as their weapons. It's extremely ridiculous in the best way possible. There's not much story here, just a bunch of guys going around shooting each other with food.

Marvelous Trailer for Tim Burton's BIG EYES

I was really hoping that Tim Burton would bust out something completely new and refreshing with his upcoming movie Big Eyes, and it looks like he succeeded. This film looks absolutely stunning. You can definitely see Burton's wonderful signature style, it's just not as in your face and bold as most of his other films. I loved what I saw in this trailer, and it looks to me like this could be one of the best films Burton has made in years. This was a great project for him to take on. The feature stars Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, and Terence Stamp. Here's a brief synopsis:

A drama centered on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane (Adams), her phenomenal success in the 1950s, and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works in the 1960s.

The film is set to be released on December 25th, 2014.

Rian Johnson Talks Creative Freedom on STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII and More

Director Rian Johnson recently talked a little bit about his experience working on Star Wars: Episode VIII so far on the podcast TalkHouse. While he talks about it he gives us several reasons why these upcoming Star Wars movies are going to be amazing, mostly because of how supportive Lucasfilm has been to the filmmakers they've hired to bring these movies to life.

Director Terry Gilliam was also in on the discussion, and it was the first time he learned that Johnson was directing Episodes VIII and IX. When Gilliam finds out he asks him what it feels like to take over someone else's world and this was his response:

“Well, I’m just starting into it so… but so far it’s been nothing but… honestly, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had writing. It’s just joyous. But also for me personally, I grew up, not just watching those movies but playing with those toys, so as a little kid the first movies I was making in my head were set in that world. So a big part of it is that sort of direct connection, its almost like an automatic jacking-in into childhood in a weird way I guess…. but I don’t know, ask me again in a few years, we’ll talk about it.”

Gilliam then asked if George Lucas was going to be keeping an eye on him. Johnson reminded the director that Lucas sold all the rights off to Disney, and then added:

"I’m figuring it out as I go. I’m dancing on top of the avalanche a little bit. So I’ll have more perspective in a while but it’s a balance of remembering what inspires you about it [the original films], but you can probably go to the wrong place by feeling too responsible to it. You have to keep your head loose enough to tell a story you actually care about."

The conversation then went into the obligations and the responsibility that comes with finding yourself in charge of such an iconic franchise. What Johnson says next it was gives me even more reason to believe that these Star Wars films will kick ass:

"Well, that’s been the great thing about it Kathleen and her whole creative team have been so insistent on all the filmmakers they’ve been hiring for these new movies: ‘We want you to take it and turn it into something that you really care about.’ And we’ll see how the process plays out, but so far, that’s a big part of the reason I’m [doing the film]. Because that just seems like their attitude towards it. It’s really exciting actually."

We've got a long way to go before we see the movies that Johnson is working on, but he's a talented guy who is going to give fans everything they want to see. Thanks to The Playlist, and you can listen to the entire podcast below if you want.

I know I may be a little late to the game by posting this live-action Mortal Kombat fight sequence, as it came out last year but I just came across it thanks to my brother. I loved what I saw, and so I had to share it. I'm sure there are some of you who haven't seen it yet, and if you have seen it… it's a video worth seeing again. The short is called Mortal Kombat Vs. Noob Saibot, and I absolutely loved the the way the action was done. It's fast paced and incredibly entertaining, especially if you're a fan of Mortal Kombat. The short was directed by Michael Dahlquist, and I hope you enjoy the fight.

I don't know about you, but I'm way excited about Insidious: Chapter 3. This has been an incredible horror franchise, and it makes me happy that it exists. Today we have a teaser poster to share with you that offers a creepy verse that you have to read because I can't read it to you.

The movie comes from writer and director Leigh Whannell who wrote the scripts for the previous two films. All we know about the story is that it tells a twisted new tale when "terror begins for a teenage girl and her family, predating the haunting of the Lambert family in the earlier movies and revealing more mysteries of the otherworldly realm The Further."

The movie stars Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott, with Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and Whannell reprising their roles from the first two movies in the franchise.

The movie hits theaters on May 29th, 2015.

Marvel concept artist Ryan Meinerding released this Howard the Duck concept art that he did for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. I think it's awesome that Marvel introduced this character into their cinematic universe. I know we'll probably never see Howard the Duck get a standalone film, other than the one that already exists, but I'm sure we'll eventually see him pop up again in another Marvel film somewhere down the line.

GODZILLA Writer Max Borenstein Will Script GODZILLA 2

$

Legendary Pictures has hired screenwriter Max Borenstein to write Godzilla 2 for director Gareth Edwards. Borenstein wrote the first film, as well as Legendary's upcoming King Kong movie Skull Island, which Tom Hiddleston was recently cast in. He also wrote the Jeff Bridges fantasy thriller Seventh Son for the studio as well. Legendary Pictures obviously likes the guy's work.

Legendary and Warner Bros were hoping that the relaunch of the Godzilla franchise would be a success for them. The first movie made $524 million worldwide, and you can bet that they will keep pumping out sequel after sequel as long as it still brings in the cash. I really liked the first movie, and as long as they keep creating quality films I'll keep watching them.

Edwards will start working on the Godzilla sequel after he's finished with the Star Wars project he's working on with Lucasfilm and Disney. Legendary set the released date for June 8th, 2018, so we still have a long way to go before we see who Godzilla will fight next.

Nick Frost is one of three guest stars that will be appearing in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special. Frost is best known for his work with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright on films such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. The guy is a very funny and talented individual, and it's going to be so cool to see him enter the world of Doctor Who. The other two actors joining the special are Nathan McMullen (Misfits) and Michael Troughton, who played the second Doctor in the 1960s.

The news was revealed on Doctor Who's official Twitter feed with the following photo that came with the caption: "#DoctorWho Christmas Special guest stars #HoHoHo."

I can't wait to see what they have in store for the Christmas special this year!

SUPERGIRL TV Series Lands at CBS

That Supergirl TV series we've been hearing about that is being developed by Arrow's Greg Berlanti has landed at CBS. According to Deadline, the deal closed last night, which is only one day after the project was taken out to the broadcast networks. They must have put together an impressive package, but Supergirl really does have the makings of a successful show if done right.

The series will center on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, "who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be."

The character was previously played by Laura Vandervoort on The CW's Superman origin series Smallville. I'm happy to see that the new DC Comics series is moving forward, and I'm really curious to see how they bring the character to life in it.

Aubrey Plaza is GRUMPY CAT and First Photo from Film Released

aubry-plaza-is-grumpy-cat-and-first-photo-from-film-released

The world does not need a movie about Grumpy Cat, but it's happening, and it's ridiculous. This is one of those movies that makes me shake my head in shame at Hollywood. That being said, this is a Lifetime movie, and they are sure to make a lot of money from it because, for some reason, people love Grumpy Cat and have a fascination with the feline. I just don't get it.

Mashable reports that Aubrey Plaza will voice the cat in the film, which is called Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. Plaza definitely seems like the right choice for the role because she's got that grumpy monotone voice. Doing something like this just seems like a step down for the actress who has been building a decent movie career. Here's a description of the story:

Grumpy Cat "plays" a lonely feline who develops a sour outlook on life after living in a mall pet shop. Then, over the holidays, a 12-year-old girl named Chrystal (played by Megan Charpentier) enters the pet store and realizes she is the only one who can hear the cat talk. A friendship ensues. Through the adventures that follow, which include facing off against evil dognappers and saving her new friend's life, will Grumpy learn the true meaning of Christmas?

There's no word on when the movie will air, but how many of you will watch it when it does air?

Pogo is back with another fun music video movie remix. In his latest creation he uses several classic animated and live-action Disney films such as Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid. It's amazing to hear what this guy comes up with in his videos. I don't know how he does it, but it seems like it would be a lot of tedious work. Over the last few days we've seen a few new Interstellar movie posters that you can see here and here. This most recent one is an IMAX specific poster, and apparently it's the last one that we'll see released for Christopher Nolan's sci-fi space adventure.

The film focuses on "a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage."

Interstellar will be in theaters on November 7th, and knowing Nolan's work, I'm expecting a mind-blowing moviegoing experience.
