"The Truth About Hello Kitty" Comic by Dorkly

It was recently revealed that Hello Kitty is not a cat but a girl. The news caused an uproar all over the internet because it's contrary to what most people believe.

Here's quote from Sanrio via the LA Times:

"Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

The team at Dorkly created a comic that answers a major question about Hello Kitty's appearance — where did she get the head? Enjoy.

Gone Girl opens in about a month, and the marketing will likely kick into high gear soon. Today we have 16 photos that look a lot like screen caps from the 3 trailers released so far. Director David Fincher is one of my favorite directors, and I'm looking forward to his new movie.

Gone Girl's mystery will unravel on October 3rd (USA).

Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy Figurines Are Off the Effin' Chain

Some of the most inventive, entertaining, genre-bending comedies of the last decade were the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy — Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. Kibooki at Evil Corp has paid tribute to the collaborations between Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and director Edgar Wright by designing this series of figurines. Sadly, they aren’t in production. These are just illustrations of what the figurines would look like. I would really love to have these on my shelf. The fact that I can't makes me want to shoot my gun in the air and yell "Aaaaagh!"*

BANG BANG BABY Trailer Is Trippy Good Fun

If you’ve been waiting for a revival of the ‘60s-style science fiction musical (I know I have), Bang Bang Baby just might be the movie for you. Starring Jane Levy, Justin Chatwin, and Peter Stormare, the movie is about an aspiring singer in a small town whose dreams seem about to come true when her favorite rockstar comes to her town, until their chance meeting is maybe ruined when the local chemical plant springs a leak and everyone starts mutating.

I know you’re probably thinking that we’ve seen this movie a hundred times before, but... Just kidding. We've never seen anything like this before. Director Jeffrey St. Jules has brought a surreal, kitschy aesthetic that looks wicked fun. Bang Bang Baby will premiere on September 8 at the Toronto Film Festival. I’m interested to see the reviews, because this looks like a unique moviegoing experience. You can watch the trailer below.

The "Science" Behind Fire Flowers in SUPER MARIO

How do the Fire Flower power ups from the world of Super Mario work? Well, Mashed offers up a “scientific” explanation that is completely made-up, absolutely absurd, and utterly hilarious. They explore tough and grammatically incorrect questions like, “What is a Fire Flower? How does it work? And what does it are?”

The Science Of Power Ups: Fire Flower” was written by Eddie Bowley and animated by KrEid. Thanks to Mashed for sending this our way. Be sure to check out more of their cartoon spoofs on their YouTube channel and follow them on Twitter

Tom Gauld’s Amusing Pitches for the JAWS Reboot

Nothing seems to have come of those rumors of a Jaws reboot that surfaced last year. The closest thing we’ve seen to a new Jaws film has been Gareth EdwardsGodzilla. However, cartoonist Tom Gauld has some funny ideas for the possible new Jaws franchise that he illustrated for The Guardian. If these pitches aren’t ridiculous enough, you can always just wait for Sharknado 3 to come out.

Video Study of David Fincher's Directing Techniques

Titled "The Fincher Effect" and made by Karan Chandra Bose, this 15min supercut of David Fincher's directing techniques is ultra fascinating. This video is over a year old but as Fincher has yet to release a film since its release, the video study is still current. I pretty much love or enjoy all his films and he's one of my favorite directors.

Just for fun, I've listed all of Fincher's films in order of my most favorite to least.

  1. Fight Club
  2. Panic Room
  3. The Social Network
  4. Zodiac
  5. Se7en
  6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
  7. The Game
  8. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  9. Alien 3

Obviously your own personal list would be different. It's a fun exercise if you want join in on the comments.

VFX Behind The Scene Videos for GAME OF THRONES and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

One of the best parts of getting a movie or TV show on disc is all the special features. I just enjoy watching how these stories are crafted. For large shows and movies, the biggest expenditure in the budget is often visual effects. Here we have an effects reel for Game of Thrones and a behind the scene video of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that show how the effects magic is made.

Trailer for the Documentary STARRING ADAM WEST

Here’s the trailer for a documentary called Starring Adam West. The doc takes us though the life of Adam West, who was an unknown actor in the ‘50s, but thanks to his starring role as Batman, became a household name in the ‘60s. However, as Batman expert and West’s Family Guy co-star Ralph Garman explains, “Adam West became a huge star on television at a time where the stereotyping curse was in full force.” By 1970, the actor’s career came to a standstill, and he was forced to make hokey public appearances and perform dangerous stunts to provide for his family.

You can currently stream the full-length documentary on Encore Play and on Encore On Demand.

In this short film, a man learns the hard way that living with Jigsaw from the Saw movies is not as cool as he thought it would be, with Jigsaw’s “games” being more annoying and mildly inconvenient than the devious life-or-death situations we’re used to seeing him devise.

Living with Jigsaw” was written and directed by Chris Capel and stars Brendan McNamara.

DRIPPED Is a Sweet and Strange Animated Short

This wonderful short was shortlisted for the Oscar for the Best Animated Short in 2013, and it is probably the sweetest homage to a great painter I have ever seen. Written and directed by Léo Verrier, "Dripped" is about an art thief with a curious motive. He doesn’t sell the paintings he steals — he eats them and becomes them. Briefly. Unfortunately, the museum beefs up security, his supply dries up, and… I’m not going to tell you what happens. But the whole thing is a really beautiful tribute to Jackson Pollock, and it is definitely worth a watch. It is sure to put a smile on your face.

PULP EMPIRE: Tarantino Style Fan-Edit of Empire Strikes Back — Full Movie

Pulp Empire is a fan-edit of The Empire Strikes Back but done in the style of Quentin Tarantino. Brilliantly edited and sound mixed by NJVCPulp Empire is an amazing labor of love. He is really channeling Tarantino's style and has really compressed the storyline for the whole movie.

Fan-edits still sit in a fair-use legal grey area, so please only watch these if you have legal copies of all six Star Wars movies and copies of every Tarantino movie soundtrack. Odds are these will get pulled at some point so watch them while you can.

The whole movie is about 89 minutes long. I recommend watching the trailer first to give you a sense of the style.

Marvel's Netflix Shows Won't Be Afraid to Go Darker

Marvel has kept a remarkably tight lid on their new Netflix series. Daredevil is already shooting, and the only thing we know about it is the principal cast. We know even less about the series that will follow — Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, or how they will end up together in The Defenders. If you sat through the Marvel Television panel at Comic-Con hoping for some news (like a chump!), you were disappointed. But Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos threw a bone to those of us still hoping for some information about the series. In an interview with Empire, he said that they “will not be afraid to go darker” than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is really no surprise. We’ve seen House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black. Netflix shows are gritty and adult, which is exactly how Sarandos described the Marvel shows.

“The series will not be afraid to go darker than the film did. What we love about this particular set of heroes is that they’re a little more down to Earth. Costume wise and also in that these are gritty crime stories, more in the streets than in the clouds.”

The interesting question is whether or not the darker tone will meld with the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ties directly into the films, with several characters crossing between big screen and small. Will that happen with The Defenders?

“It has definitely been talked about.”

Hmmm… that doesn't tell us much. He does say that Daredevil is in production now, and it looks like Jessica Jones will be next.

“Right now, the writers' rooms are open and they're looking at casting Jessica. Eventually the series will run very close together. You can then have a separate season where the characters will cross over."

These series will be Marvel’s first attempt at live-action long form storytelling about superheroes. It will be interesting where they take it, especially since it’s essentially an elongated version of the Avengers model. Sarandos said,

“It was really based on the theatrical model of The Avengers. Could you take another group of characters, The Defenders, and go about it the same way? Normally, they do the big movie and then eventually they get to the group origin story. Having 13 hours to tell each of these stories, you can go right to the origin story and the action at the same time.”

For a lot of reasons, I hope these series are good. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.

Be Kind — Or Something May Happen, You Never Know What

In this funny reminder to be kind to our friends and family, things escalate quickly. Cartoonist and animator Nate Swinehart, who posts art to his Tumblr and also writes the sci-fi action webcomic leveL, shows us two ways a conversation could go, as well as the far-reaching unintended consequences of the conversation. He posted the comic to his Tumblr with the comment, “Being good to each other is so important, guys.” It really is.

DOCTOR WHO Trailer and Pics — Episode 3 "Robot of Sherwood"

$

The eighth season of Doctor Who is shaping up nicely so far, with a new Doctor, conflict brewing between the Doctor and Clara, a mysterious new villain probably, and a philosophical question at the heart of it all: Is the Doctor a good man? Last week’s episode raised new questions on that front with (SPOILER) the Doctor forging a mind connection with a dalek and showing him beauty and brilliance and hatred, which is a nice through-line from season one’s “Dalek,” in which we first learned about the Doctor’s atrocity in the Time Wars.

One other great thing about “Into the Dalek,” was the Doctor’s constant insistence that Clara is unattractive, through exchanges like this one:

“You were smiling at nothing. I’d almost say you were in love, but to be honest...”
“Honest?”
“...you’re not a young woman anymore.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Well, you don’t look it.”
“I do look it!”
“That’s right, keep your spirits up!”

Next week, in "Robot of Sherwood," Clara and the Doctor are going to encounter Robin Hood, whom the Doctor is convinced cannot be real, although Clara seems to be a big fan. New Who has done these historical episodes pretty well (see "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "The Shakespeare Code"), so I’m excited to see what happens back in the early 13th century. I’m also curious to see what is developing on the Danny Pink front. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think.

The 33 Most Expensive Movie Props

We’ve all heard of being starstruck, but I don’t know why people don’t ever say propstruck. Often actors do such a great job of transforming themselves into larger than life characters that when you meet some of them, you’re instantly reminded that they are just regular people who played a role. However, movie props, functional or not, tend to look as advertised, and can trigger a greater sense of awe and wonder. Every time I see a DeLorean, even stock ones that haven’t been modded with Back to the Future paraphernalia, the kid in me goes a bit giddy. This is why people are willing to dig deep to own a piece of movie magic. Here is an infographic (via: /Film, Design Taxi) that lists the 33 most expensive props.

We have a Japanese trailer for Dracula Untold, which stars Luke Evans. There is a sprinkle of new bits in the trailer that make it worth watching even if you are only mildly interested in the movie. The large scope of the story and battle sequences are one of the few things that have me interested in watching it.

Plot Summary:

Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6, Immortals) stars in Dracula Untold, the origin story of the man who became Dracula. Gary Shore directs and Michael De Luca produces the epic action-adventure that co-stars Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Diarmaid Murtagh and Samantha Barks.

Dracula Untold marches into theaters October 17th. (USA) Source: CBM Trailers.

STAR WARS "Flat" Character Icons

Artist Filipe Carvalho has taken Star Wars characters and created flat, clean icons. The flat icon look is very popular in design at the moment. Carvalho really has pushed the minimalism while keeping the characters identifiable.

Carvalho on his work:

Obviously, I'm a Star Wars fan, so I wanted to pay a tribute to something I really love. Being a copywriter, the Star Wars' universe that I was introduced to in my childhood has inspired me to create great and passionate stories that have the potential to capture the public's eye and heart.
But, it's one thing to have the Star Wars saga as an inspiration and another to create a visual based on the story.
Flat Design, with it's simple visual approach, enabled the non-professional-art-director-me to produce some illustration work, so, this was my chance to give something back to the saga. I looked up online and apparently there isn't any set of flat design/long shadow design Star Wars Icons.
And this is how I ended up putting my heart and soul to this project. Hope you like it.

MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT — "Goliath" Trailer and Photos

Monsters: Dark Continent takes place 10 years after Monsters. The "infected zones" in the first film are now worldwide. Dark Continent focuses on the Army's efforts to combat the alien monsters in the Middle East. This war weary alien invasion film looks larger that the first and I'm really looking forward to watching it.

Because of the time gap and the story's focus, watching Monsters is not a requirement for being able to watch Dark Continent. But I do highly recommend watching the first film because it's the film that got Gareth Edwards the directing gig for Godzilla.

Monsters: Dark Continent fights back at a time to be determined, because it currently has no US release date.

New Stills from Fox's GOTHAM

Fox has released a cache of stills from the pilot of their upcoming drama Gotham. I’ve seen the pilot already, and it is really, really promising. It follows Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) on his first case in Gotham City, which just happens to be a murder that will reverberate through Gotham for decades to come. He's a skilled cop, but Det. Gordon is going to have to learn to balance his principles with his will to survive amidst Gotham City's corruption. The stills feature Detectives Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock, Alfred, Bruce Wayne, Fish Mooney, and Oswald Cobblepot. Luckily, Gotham premieres on Monday, September 22, so you guys can all jump on the train soon enough.

The series follows one cop, destined for greatness, as he navigates a dangerously corrupt city teetering between good and evil, and chronicles the rise of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes. The entirely new, untold chapter comes from executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”) and stars Ben McKenzie (“Southland,” “The O.C.”), Donal Logue (“Vikings,” “Sons of Anarchy”) and Jada Pinkett Smith (“Hawthorne,” “Collateral”).
