STAR WARS Inspired Oculus Rift Tech Demo

0
0

Wanna watch some hot lightsaber on laser action? Then we’ve got the video for you. Watch a “VR enthusiast” strap in and live out his wildest Star Wars dreams.

Via STEM System:

This is one of the first videos in which we show our STEM Pack, which is mounted to the strap of the Oculus Rift DK2 to provide full position and orientation tracking for the user's head. STEM Controllers provide tracking for each hand.
The lightsaber or sword is the true test for a one-to-one motion tracking system in VR, because it requires low latency, and almost perfect tracking of both position and orientation between your physical and your virtual self as you perform swipes, slashes, blocks and counters with the lightsaber. The STEM System and the SixenseVR SDK make this experience possible, and also make it easy for developers to create these types of applications quickly. The experience is a fantasy, but it feels natural because of the near-perfect hand-eye coordination that the SixenseVR SDK provides.

GONE GIRL — Affleck and Pike on Whether It's a Bad Date Movie

According to Empire "an underwater scene (hence the weird headgear, which will allow properly wavy hair to be added late)"

All nine GeekTyrant articles about Gone Girl are preceded by the name the name of its director — David Fincher. We are all huge fans of his and will watch pretty much any movie he makes. Fincher told Empire that Gone Girl is a date movie that will "end 15 million marriages." I know his films can be disturbing, but if this movie ends your marriage, odds are it was heading that way already.

Ben Affleck weighs in on Fincher's statement.

"I actually think this is the perfect date movie, not because I think it'll result in divorce - I think that's just David's fantasy - but because it's the kind of movie that a husband and wife could talk about afterwards. I think a man and a woman would have different takes on what happens. The last time I was in a movie that I thought polarised men and women in an interesting way was Chasing Amy. That was quite some time ago."

Rosamund Pike adds her own insight.

"That aspect of marriage as a con game, or whatever. The idea that we perform a sort of ideal version of ourselves that the other person wants. We perhaps belie our true nature in order to perform to the ideal. David and I talked a lot about living in an age of rampant narcissism."

Empire also released a few photos that the feature Neil Patrick Harris, Carrie Coon, Affleck, Pike, and Fincher.

Gone Girl will be the primary suspect in an attack on date night October 3 (USA).

Joyous LITTLE MERMAID Art by Lois van Baarle

I just love this Little Mermaid art by Lois van Baarle. There is so much personality and joy in this rendering of the Disney princess Ariel. The proportions, colors, and just every stroke are a real display of talent. Make sure to check out van Baarle’s full portfolio/blog. It’s full of really great art. Found via The Art of Animation

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII — Shooting Resumes With Harrison Ford

Star Wars: Episode VII has resumed shooting after a two week break to give Harrison Ford time to recover from an injury. Ford was hurt on set 11 weeks ago when a part of the set of the [Redacted] fell on his leg. Four weeks ago we reported that he was able to walk without crutches and that his injury was healing well.

EW sources say that production is “going, well … full Force,” and that is probably necessary. The movie is still in principle photography and likely has a long post production scheduled, so they need to really move quickly.

Star Wars: Episode VII makes the jump to hyperspace December 18th, 2015.

Famous Actors in Old TV Ads [FIXED]

World Wide Interweb has cut together an almost 4 minute video of famous actors in old TV ads. Before they were getting multi-million dollar movie deals these stars where selling us breakfast food, soap, soda, burgers, and hemorrhoid cream. The video quality is pretty poor, but it doesn’t look any worse than old VHS.

Thanks Uproxx for putting the roxx in Uproxx.

"The Future Begins" for THE FLASH

0

The CW released a new trailer for The Flash, their newest Superhero show, and it looks fantastic. Okay, let’s be real. I’ve seen the pilot, and it is fantastic. Without giving too much away, the first episode lays out Barry Allen’s backstory, the origin of his powers, the origin of a large and varied pool of villains of the week, a (probably) season-long mystery, and a (I’m guessing) series-long mystery. That seems like a lot, but several of those things come out of the same event, so it doesn’t feel rushed or disjointed. That’s a feat.

Maybe that shouldn’t be surprising, given that The Flash comes from the same creative team as Arrow, but it is interesting that Arrow and The Flash are very different shows. They are grounded in the same universe, but Barry Allen has a sunniness that Oliver Queen lacks, and that transfers to the show as a whole.

Watch the trailer. It has some great moments from throughout the episode, but it doesn’t come close to giving the whole thing away. When you’re done with that, watch the premiere on Tuesday, October 7.

Grant Gustin plays Barry Allen, "who suffers a freak accident that turns him into a superhero with the power of incredible speed." Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin, Tom Cavanaugh, Carlos Valdes, and Danielle Panabaker also star.

5 Geeky Things We Want This Week, Back to School Edition

This is Labor Day weekend, the official end of summer. Or really, the unofficial official end of summer, because calendar-wise summer doesn’t end until the Autumnal Equinox, which is September 23 this year. However, Labor Day is when all fun, beachy activities cease, and we all head back to school. Or if we are adults, back to the grind. Which is why, even if you have been out of school for years, it’s a good time to do a little back to school shopping and pick up whatever supplies you may need. Or you can just buy this stuff for your kids, but that is less than no fun. That is negative fun.

Bravest Warriors Catbug Backpack
Bravest Warriors is an odd little show on the Cartoon Hangover YouTube channel. It was created by the creator of Adventure Time, and good hell, Catbug is adorable. Part blue cat and part ladybug, this little hero has enhanced strength and can fly, as we all as travel between dimensions. So obviously, this adorable (adorable!) backpack is a must-have for any smallish girl who packs an outsized punch. [Entertainment Earth]

TARDIS 8 GB Memory Stick
Yeah, you could keep all your important research papers on a regular thumb drive, but this one is better. It’s bigger on the inside. [Entertainment Earth]

Attack on Titan Survey Corps Levi Notebook
Choosing the right notebook is an important step to asserting your identity. One time in college I sat next to an emo haircut who took notes in a Moleskine with a fine point sharpie. I nearly died of rolling my eyes. Provoke a friendlier response with this Attack on Titan notebook. [Entertainment Earth]

Nikola Tesla Lunch Bag
I know that you aren't supposed to use paper bags and plastic baggies for school lunches anymore. You have to have reusable lunch bags and tupperware, and don't even think of packing sweets or anything with nuts. Or a pudding cup, which was the single greatest thing that could ever show up in your lunch bag. Anyway, these paper sacks are hella cooler than even the coolest BPA-free plastic lunchbox. They may be a bit pricey, but just take them for the first week and earn zillions of cool points. [Etsy

Secret Message Pen Set
Remember when you'd pass a note to a friend and the excruciatingly dull Mr. Tanaka would intercept it and read it to the class, and everyone would laugh because you said Danny looked so cute today? That was the worst, and it will never happen with these pens. The ink can only be seen under an ultraviolet blacklight, which sounds pretty useless, except these pens are also blacklight flashlights. Brilliant. [Perpetual Kid]

Jesse Eisenberg on Figuring out the Psychology Behind Lex Luthor

0
0

In a recent interview, Jesse Eisenberg spoke briefly about playing Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. From the details about the character that leaked earlier this year, we are already aware that this is going to be a unique take on Superman’s arch nemesis. Eisenberg’s casting alone is probably the clearest indicator of that. In the interview, the actor confirms that he is indeed making the character his own and further explains how he worked with one of the writers to figure out a more real and modern approach.

"There are some indications of how the character should behave based on the script, and then an actor makes it his or her own,” Eisnberg told Total Film. “I got to know one of the writers Chris Terrio, and we were able to discuss things at length and figure out who this person is to create a real psychology behind what is, perhaps, in a comic book, a less than totally modern psychology. I can only say I've been asked to play an interesting role. A complicated, challenging person."

Listen here, Eisenberg. If you were the guy who reinvented Lex Luthor, you would have reinvented Lex Luthor. Oh, I guess that’s exactly what you and the writers are doing. I’ll go ahead and cancel that forensics team, which I said we wouldn’t need anyway.

Social Network references and his slightly confusing remark about the source material aside, Eisenberg’s comments make me even more anxious to see the role Lex will play in what is (sort of) being billed as a showdown between heroes. Especially with the info we received about what LexCorp have their hands on at the beginning of the film.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is being directed by Zack Snyder and is set to open in theaters March 25, 2016.

Two weeks ago we posted what might be the new Stormtrooper helmets in Star Wars: Episode VII. Today GeekTyrant reader Ted Koti sent us these concept photos, and they look like a pretty good approximation. There are rumors that we'll see some black and chrome variants in the movie. I'm personally exited to see the chrome ones.

Supercut of Edgar Wright's Dramatic Close-Ups

As we’ve said before, Edgar Wright is one of the most visually inventive directors working today. That’s just a fact. He makes dynamic use of his camera to aid storytelling and joke-telling. One of his signature moves is using extreme close ups to tell visual jokes, often with crash zooms and ominous music. Filmmaker Jaume R. Lloret has gone over Wright’s films with a fine tooth comb, pulling examples from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End to create this entertaining supercut of extremely mundane objects extremely close-up. Check it.

SHAUN THE SHEEP THE MOVIE - Teaser Trailers for the Wallace and Gromit Spin-off

0
0

Earlier today, Studio Canal and Aardman released the second teaser trailer for Shaun the Sheep the Movie. We didn’t post the first teaser trailer that was released earlier this year, so I included that below as well. The first teaser didn’t contain any actual footage from the Wallace and Gromit spin-off, but it did have some funny gags so it’s worth checking out. The newest teaser, however, gives us a look at some of the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off-type shenanigans Shaun, Bitzer, and The Flock get into in the Big City. But there’s a little more to the story than that. Here’s the synopsis:

When Shaun decides to take the day off and have some fun, he gets a little more action than he bargained for. A mix up with the Farmer, a caravan and a very steep hill lead them all to the Big City and it's up to Shaun and the flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.

The new teaser is set to Teddybears’ “Cobrastyle,” which is pretty much the go-to song for any trailer that is fast paced and wacky, whereas John Murphy’s “Adagio in D Minor” is the go-to trailer song for dramatic action films. Dear trailer editors, please mix it up a little.

Shaun the Sheep the Movie was written and directed by Mark Burton and Richard Starzack. It will hit UK Cinemas on February 6th, 2015 and will be released on April 24th here in the states.

Marvel's AGENT CARTER Casts Ally and Antagonist

Here’s some good news for everyone looking forward to Marvel’s Agent Carter series. The studio’s second foray into primetime television looks really promising — it’s a kicky period piece with some great talent attached to it — but we don’t actually know much about it. They didn’t shoot a pilot (the Agent Carter Marvel One-Shot stood in for that), and as of San Diego Comic-Con, they hadn’t written any scripts. All we really know is that Hayley Atwell is returning to the role, and it is set in the immediate aftermath of World War 2 (and Steve Rogers' "death") and focuses on the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the titular agent’s struggles as a badass woman in a male-dominated industry.

But today Marvel has made two casting announcements, one fantastic, and one kind of meh. On the fantastic front, Enver Gjokaj has been cast as “sweet and honorable” Agent Daniel Sousa, who was maimed in the war. Gjokaj is best known for Joss Whedon’s gone before its time series Dollhouse. He also had a tiny role as “Young Cop” in The Avengers, because when Whedon likes you he will cast you in everything he ever does. Carter and Sousa will work together at the Strategic Science Reserve, an early pre-cursor to S.H.I.E.L.D. From leaked character descriptions, it looks like he will be a strong ally for Carter.

I am less enthusiastic about Chad Michael Murray being cast as Agent Jack Thompson, or at least I was until I read this description of the character. “Agent Jack Thompson is in his 30s, handsome and damn well knows it. The polar opposite of Dooley, he doesn’t take kindly to women in the workplace, nor how little recognition he gets. Worse, he wants Dooley’s job and is desperate to prove himself.” That sounds about right for Murray.

Agent Carter will air eight episodes while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on winter hiatus. Previous reports have indicated that the plot line will somehow be connected to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s second season, but we don’t know that for sure. What we do know is that Louis D’Esposito will direct the first episode, and then Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will come on for episodes two and three, and Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) will take the helm for episode four. Johnston and the Russo Bros. aren’t in the habit of directing episodes of other people’s shows, so they just might see the potential for something great here. I hope so.

ROCKET RACCOON #3 by Skottie Young — Marvel Comics Preview

0
0

In the Marvel movies, Rocket Raccoon and his trustee companion Groot have just teamed up with a thief, an assassin, and a maniac to form the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the comics, however, Rocket has ventured out on his own in a solo series being written and illustrated by Skottie Young with color art by Jean Francois Beaulieu. Comicbook.com debuted a preview of Issue #3, which finds our hero teaming up with Macho Gomez. The picture above is the cover by Young, and I’ve also included the variant cover below, which was done by Pascal Campion.

Everyone’s favorite pistol-packin’ procyon* finally finds himself face-to-face with the intergalactic imposter. • It’s macho ado about everything as Macho Gomez guest-stars and the Ex-Terminators are hot on Rocket’s tail! *Procyon is the scientific term for raccoon, obviously.

Rocket Raccoon #3 is due out September 3rd. To read the first four pages of the issue, head on over to Comicbook.com.

Don't Drunk Text a DOCTOR WHO Fan

0
0

Few things are more annoying than getting a drunk text from a stranger in the middle of the night. They are thankfully rare and are usually best ignored. But if you’re bored and feel like messing with a poor, witless drunkard, this might be a fun thing to do. A Doctor Who fan received a mis-sent text that said, “tortyly drunk riht now. straight men everhwere.” Clearly, this was someone who needed to be messed with. Her friend posted screen grabs of the resulting conversation on tckld, and it is hilarious. Doctor Who fans will find one side of the conversation familiar. Even if you aren't a Doctor Who fan, this is pretty funny.

I like to think that guy woke up hungover in a cemetery with no idea how he got there.

P.S. Yes, I know that it is possible to fake text conversations. I don't care. Real or not, this is amazing.

Thanks to GeekxGirls for the tip.

Holy Sith, That’s a Lot of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Spoilers

Latino-Review just posted a lengthy column by Da7e that goes into a ton of Star Wars: Episode VII SPOILERS. Da7E also offers some educated speculation and talks a lot about how awesome he is. And our friends at Latino-Review are awesome. They get all the scoops, the fancy ladies, the clothes, and the free creams and lotions. But my life is good. Reeaaallly good. I wake up every morning at 5am and compile lists and trivia posts. It’s the beeeest. I love it. It’s fantastic. (If you don’t what I’m quoting, what have you been doing with your life?)

I’ll keep to the more solid bits of info here, but if your thirst for all things Star Wars isn’t quenched after this, I definitely suggest exploring some of that speculation, or looking at the other half a dozen Star Wars related posts on our front page. On to the spoilers...

LR’s sources say that production is set to return to the location of Skelling Michael Island in Kerry, Ireland. They filmed scenes with Mark Hamill (and possibly Daisy Ridley) on the island in late July. Local vendors have been contracted out so that the island can be used once again in November. By that time the landscape will be grey and dark, a perfect place for…

“I’m hearing Skelling Michael Island is the location for the Sith Homeworld. Like in the Expanded Universe, the Sith were founded by a Jedi who practiced moral relativism thousands of years ago (a long LONG time ago in a galaxy far, far away). He met up with Plagueis and started going by the Sith name Darth Ruin. He split off to unite the Sith tribes under the Dark Side of The Force. I don’t know if all of that is going to be in the movie, but it’s going to get called back as we’ll have a new Ruin in the movie, whomever fancies himself the biggest threat (might this be my ‘Sith Inquisitor?’).
“Skelling Michael Island is the Sith Homeworld, the stone hut ruins on that island are a control center and the planet itself is somehow the weapon.”

This seems in line with Disney and Lucasfilm’s plans for a unified expanded universe that has already been set in motion with the animated series Star Wars Rebels and the book A New Dawn, and which will extend into comics, games, and more.

This next bit of information is an update to their earlier reports about the Inquisitors being in the film.

“I’m now pretty sure no one is going to call themselves an 'Inquisitor' in Episode VII, it’s more likely that these Sith baddies are ret-conned into the overall story arc since the prequel trilogy was so obsessed with the Sith duality (one master, one apprentice). I’m pretty sure there are just a lot of Sith, probably not called The Inquisitor, but still may be a cyborg. Just not the cyborg in the concept art.“

You can view the concept art he’s referring to and read more about that cyborg character here. LR also point out the Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) will not be playing Luke Skywalker’s son, as people previously speculated.

Ok, that’s the most solid stuff so far. Since Harrison Ford has recovered from his injury and production has resumed, we can only hope that more info is on its way. However, this is a J.J. Abrams film, so maybe it’ll just be more speculation from here on out. Feel free to post any speculation and theories you may have in the comments section below.

10 Reasons You Should Be Watching OUTLANDER

0
0

If you haven’t been watching Outlander, you need to rectify that situation right now. It is hella good fun. Here’s the set up: The series begins in 1945, just as World War 2 ends. Claire Randall, a combat nurse, is recently reunited with her husband, Frank, with whom she is very much in love. They go on a trip to Inverness where she touches a magic druid rock and is sent back in time to 1743, where she must survive by her wits and try desperately not to fall in love with a dashing rapscallion named Jamie. You should watch this show. Here is why:

1. It has an amazing geek pedigree. It was adapted from a hugely popular series of fantasy novels written by Diana Gabaldon. It was developed by Ronald D. Moore of the “I made that amazing Battlestar Galactica series everyone loved” Ronald D. Moores.

2. It is mostly set in the Scottish Highlands in 1743, and if you’ve ever been to Comic-Con you know one thing is true: Geeks love kilts. Comic-Con is basically the largest gathering of Utilikilt wearers in North America. Can’t get enough.

3. That set up could be a cheese factory, but it isn’t. Outside of the precipitating magic event, everything is very grounded. The Scottish Highlands were cold and dirty in the 18th Century, and the show reflects that. Claire earns a place by using her nursing skills, and while she is aided by her modern understanding of sanitation, she can’t miracle cure everyone she meets.

4. The show is patient without being slow. Most of the pilot is spent watching Claire and Frank on vacation, not doing anything much. And while you may wonder when they're going to get to the kilts and muskets portion, it isn’t boring. Plus, the time spent with the couple pays off down the road when the audience needs to understand exactly what Claire has lost and why she is desperate to get back home. And although Claire and Jamie have insane chemistry and are inevitably headed for each other, it doesn’t feel like they are being kept apart for contrived reasons.

5. Caitriona Balfe is lovely in both periods. She is lively and smart and fierce and oh so aware of her precarious position. She is thoroughly modern, faced with the sometimes barbaric practices of the past. She doesn’t compromise, but she also can’t stick her neck out too far. It is fun to watch her high wire act.

6. Sam Heughan’s Jamie is the platonic ideal of boyish manliness. Quixotic, devil may care, handsome, and totally in love with Claire within about 15 minutes. As well he should be. Really, everyone should be. He is seriously dreamy, and there is already an entire fangirl army calling themselves the Heughligans.

7. Tobias Menzies as Frank may be the short leg of the love triangle, but he is appealing enough that you sort of hope Claire finds her way back to him someday, just not until she’s spent some time in the stables with Jamie.

8. It keeps you guessing. In the second episode, after a reasonably auspicious start, Claire wrongfoots herself in a conversation with the local Laird. I am still not sure what exactly she said that tipped him off, but he knows that she is lying. By the end of the third episode she has realized she can’t trust someone she thought was an ally, and by the end of the fourth episode, which airs tomorrow night, she has earned the respect of someone unlikely, and everything on the show changes.

9. It is fiercely feminist without being didactic. In some ways, Claire’s slide from 1945 to 1743 is an exaggerated exploration of the way working women were pushed back into the kitchen when the war ended, but Claire’s frustration about that is never on the surface. The often appalling treatment of women is there — I think that every episode features an act of sexual violence — but it’s handled softly, although not lightly. The wrongness of the violence is underscored by Claire’s powerful sexuality in her own time, which highlights the injustice of her predicament.

10. At the end of every episode I want to see more. That’s the main thing. After every episode I am sad that it is over.

Outlander airs Saturday nights on Starz.

If THE INCREDIBLES Was Directed by Christopher Nolan

0
0

Pixar’s The Incredibles was absolute perfection. I couldn’t be happier that director Brad Bird is working on the story for the sequel. As light and fun as the movie was, it had some dark and intense moments — small children were in perilous situations half the movie and a whole lotta superheroes were killed. Bobby Burns took those darker scenes and laid Syndrome’s more menacing speeches over them in this fake trailer that imagines The Incredibles as a Christopher Nolan film. He even cuts it to Hans Zimmer’s music from the Dark Knight trilogy to great effect.

This trailer features a lot of Syndrome. If they ever decide to do a live action film about the superhero family (I hope they don't), TJ Miller would make for the perfect Syndrome. He sounds enough like Jason Lee (the voice of Syndrome for the animated film) and looks just like the character.

Meet the New Companion in This DOCTOR WHO Clip

0
0

Are you so excited for tomorrow’s episode of Doctor Who, "Into the Dalek," that you will gladly lap up this 19 second clip (the video claims to be 23 seconds, but 4 seconds of that are copyright and logo) in which new companion Danny Pink is introduced? Me too! Here is what the clip tells us about Pink, played by Samuel Anderson: he is a new teacher at Clara’s school and he may be “a bit of a ladykiller,” which is exciting. We haven’t had one of those on the TARDIS since Captain Jack Harkness. Pink denies being a ladykiller, but those sorts always do.

It will be fun to have a male companion who isn’t romantically linked to the female companion. We haven’t had one of those since Captain Jack Harkness. Apparently we miss Captain Jack. With all of the characters being somewhat new to each other, it should be an interesting dynamic in the TARDIS. Especially since maybe the Doctor won’t be the biggest fan of Pink. Peter Capaldi said, “[The Doctor] wants to make sure Clara is always taken care of. And he’s not really sure that Danny’s the right person to be doing that because of his past.” So he is romantically linked to Clara?

Here is what Clara herself, Jenna Coleman, had to say about it, “Danny’s so lovable. He’s so laid-back. He’s a good counterpart to her uptight, control-freak nature. He brings her back to earth, literally and theoretically.” Yeah, that sounds relationshippy to me, but maybe they’re just good friends. If they are headed down the path to romance, I hope he is as badass as Rory. It’s going to take a lot to top the Last Centurion.

The 10 Best STAR WARS Fight Scenes

0
0

The StarWars.com editorial staff took on the difficult task of ranking the 10 best fight scenes in the Star Wars films. Looking back at some of these fights, I forgot how good some of the choreography was in the prequel films. As well as those fights were choreographed, there was a lot more artistry and emotion in the battles in the original trilogy. Check out the video and let us know if your favorite fights didn’t make the top 10. Also, if you agree with their number one choice, which most people probably will, you should definitely watch this other video. If it doesn’t change your mind, it’ll at least make you look at the fight in a different way.
