UNDERWORLD Is Getting Rebooted

After four films the Underworld franchise is getting a reboot. All the films combined have grossed $450 million. All of them have been fairly profitable thanks to modest budgets. With the cast not wanting to return, Sony/Screen Gems really have no other option. I’ve always enjoyed the Underworld movies despite the uneven storytelling and lack of a coherent overall story. I think there is some real potential to clean up and expand the world. Vampires versus werwolves is just too cool let die. Source THR.

Harley Quinn and Batman Poster

Artist Eric Guerrero poses Harley Quinn in front of the Caped Crusader in this 18 x 24-inch poster. Stacking the characters this way strikes a nice contrast between Batman and Quinn, making the Dark Knight, devoid of color, look all the more menacing and gargoyle-like against Harley’s bright costume and playful demeanor, unfazed by the chaos of bats enveloping her.

The poster above is printed onto high quality thick Satin paper, and is available from Amazon. I've also included a variant version of the poster from Guerrero's DeviantArt page, where widescreen desktop versions of both designs are also available. Thanks to GeekAlerts for the find.

Russo Brothers Say CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Will Wrap Up Steve Rogers' Storyline

Captain America 3 is almost two full years away, and while we don’t know a ton about the project yet, we do know that it is the last Captain America standalone that Chris Evans is on contract for. How that will affect the story is anyone’s guess. Will it wrap things up for him the way Iron Man 3 wrapped things up for Tony Stark? Or will he pass the shield to one of the possible Captain Americas waiting in the wings? Maybe it will be like the series finale of Buffy and he will pass the shield to both of them. That’s something no one would see coming. Joe and Anthony Russo have been making the rounds promoting the Blu-ray release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and they’ve been teasing us with bits of info about what we can expect from the third chapter of the Captain America saga.

It sounds like they are definitely going to wrap things up for Steve Rogers. Speaking to MTV, Anthony Russo said, “[Whether this is the end] is a hard question to answer because it gets to the specific of where the narratives are going. I will say this: yes, for satisfying storytelling, you want a beginning, middle and end. That’s the natural arc that we all thrive off of in narrative.”

That sounds like Captain America is going to follow the Iron Man model — having an individual character arc trilogy plus appearances in Avengers team ups. But unlike Iron Man, there is precedent for the shield to pass to another character, either Bucky Barnes or Falcon.

“The great thing about the Marvel universe, just like the publishing, it’s a very vast, inter-connected universe, where characters will have their rise and fall, so to speak, and hand off to other characters. As the cinematic universe moves forward, you may start to see the cinematic universe adopt that same pattern, as the publishing has, where there’s closure with some characters and new beginnings with other characters. How those hand-offs are made is always part of the fun.”

So it sounds like they will at least leave it open to hand things off to another character, but who will it be? Since Bucky is still the Winter Soldier, wandering around doing who knows what, Sam Wilson/Falcon seems like the obvious choice, but the Russos told Collider that Cap 3 will address Bucky’s situation. Joe said,

“Philosophical questions that we would want to deal with in Cap 3 would be, you know, is he redeemable? Is he the worst assassin we’ve ever seen or is he the longest suffering POW? Where does he live now? Does he ever regain his memories?… If he doesn’t regain his memories, can you call him Bucky Barnes or is he somebody new? So it’s a really fascinating character to play with.”

It also sounds like all those questions will be wrapped up in Cap 3. “We’ve called it a two-parter.”

They also told Collider that the first draft of the script is done, and that it revolves around an idea from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, which is interesting, especially given what came next. Joe said, “Usually when Kevin has an idea in his head, it’s a big idea that affects the whole universe.” Then Anthony chimed in, “For instance the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. That would be an example of a big idea coming from Kevin that a movie then has to wrap itself around.”

What is this big idea? And what will it change for the MCU this time? They aren’t looking too far ahead. Anthony said, “even though there’s sort of a grand plan of things, Kevin Feige also has this awesome attitude of one movie at a time, which I think is very healthy, not to get too far ahead of yourself.”

LEGEND OF ZELDA: Shadow LINK Cosplay

This Legend of Zelda Shadow Link cosplay by Jessica Huard of ESKJ Shoes & Art  is really well made. Add to that the great work done on the makeup for the ears, the black sword, dark shield, silver wig, and red eye contacts, and we get some epic cosplay. The photos by Maegan Towes turned out really well, making great use of the wintry location.

Huard shared with Geek X Girls a bit about the photoshoot:

"This was my first ever cosplay (LOZ is one of my favorites) and this was Maegan's first ever cosplay shoot so we were experimenting! It was about -20 out that day and we froze!"

Charlie Hunnam to Play KING ARTHUR in Guy Ritchie’s Medieval Saga

$

Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam already has a gargantuan Warner Bros. franchise on his hands with Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 stomping into theaters in April 2017. Now Hunnam is in final negotiations with the studio to star as King Arthur in a medieval saga intended to span six films — by the end of both franchises, I believe Hunnam will legally be a Warner brother, right? Hunnam emerged as director Guy Ritchie’s choice for the part, beating out the likes of Jai Courtney and Henry Cavill who both recently read for the role. The latter of whom just worked with Ritchie on The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

While Deadline broke the news about Hunnam earlier today, Variety is also reporting that Elizabeth Olsen (Godzilla, Avengers: Age of Ultron) is the frontrunner for the female lead. We’re assuming her role would be that of Guinevere. Idris Elba, who worked with Ritchie on RocknRolla back in 2008 and co-starred in the first Pacific Rim with Hunnam, was previously in talks to play a character named Bedivere, the right-hand man to Arthur's father — who may or may not be Merlin.

There arere no updates on Elba’s involvement in the project, plot details are still under wraps, and the name Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur that was previously used in reports was absent in both the Variety and Deadline pieces. So there’s still plenty we don’t know about the project was that was conceived and scripted by Joby Harold, who will also produce alongside Akiva Goldsman and Tory Tunnell. We do know, however, that the Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow tentpole is set to open July 22, 2016. Unless you have Merlin's crystal ball, that's all you get for now.

Ridley Scott Sort of Addresses Whitewashing in EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS

$

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings opens this December, and the casting for the film has been controversial to say the least. Although Ancient Egypt was a racially diverse society, the lead cast — Christian Bale as Moses, Joel Edgerton as Ramses, Sigourney Weaver as Tuya, and Aaron Paul as Joshua — is as white as it gets. That's unfortunately standard for a Hollywood movie, but things took a turn when the above photo hit the Internet. As you might have noticed, the important people are white, the slaves and servants are black. People had a problem with that, especially when they found that black and non-white actors were mostly credited with roles like "Egyptian Thief" and "Egyptian Lower Class Civilian." Yikes. Scott recently spoke to Yahoo Australia, and this is what he said about casting the film.

“Egypt was – as it is now – a confluence of cultures, as a result of being a crossroads geographically between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. We cast major actors from different ethnicities to reflect this diversity of culture, from Iranians to Spaniards to Arabs. There are many different theories about the ethnicity of the Egyptian people, and we had a lot of discussions about how to best represent the culture.”

No offense, Mr. Scott, but I don't think this was the best way to do it. Ancient Egypt was diverse, but skin color was not an indicator of social rank, as Scott's casting implies. It is difficult to determine the actual ethnic makeup of  ancient Egypt, but contemporary artistiic depictions feature people with reddish, olive, or yellow skin tones. Not Welshman with a spray tan skin tones. And analysis of skeletal structures indicate that Egyptians had craniofacial structures like other northeastern African cultures and body proportions that were more like more southern Africans. Again, not white Australian wearing eyeliner.

Why does any of this matter? Because representation matters. Ancient Egypt was a marvel, and it is a source of pride and wonder to this day. Whitewashing that sends a subtle message that great civilizations are the domain of white people, and if you think that subtle messages in media are easily blocked, read the study showing that people who watch Grey's Anatomy have a negative view of organ donation.

In fairness to Scott, Moses' sister and Joshua's father are played by Indira Varma and Ben Kingsley, respectively, both of whom are mixed race, and there are actors of varying ethnicities in supporting roles. But that just puts him in the company of M. Night Shyamalan, whose The Last Airbender had white leads and people of color in background and villain roles. C'mon, Ridley, be better than M. Night Shyamalan.

I also don't want to to single out Scott, this is a pervasive problem in Hollywood. Joe Wright came under heavy criticism for casting Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in his reimagining of Peter Pan. He claimed that he was creating an international, multiracial cast, but again, the main cast is entirely white. There is also an upcoming movie called Gods of Egypt that will feature an almost entirely white set of Egyptian gods, which is a whole new level of problematic.

It is 2014. Why are we still dealing with this shit?

ADHD’s Unexpectedly Heartfelt Studio Ghibli Tribute

As we’ve previously reported, Studio Ghibli is currently having financial issues and may cease production. There has, of course, been an outcry from fans over the sad news that the animation studio may close up shop. The most touching tribute so far, however, has come from a very unexpected place… Fox’s Animation Domination High-Def. ADHD is mostly known for skewering properties, with their Scientifically Accurate Spongebob Squarepants video and their imagining of a Michael Bay-directed Beavis and Butthead. So this genuine and heartwarming message to Studio Ghibli is pleasantly surprising, and it still manages to be humorous in the process.

Thrilling New Trailer for SEVENTH SON

The long delayed film Seventh Son finally has a second trailer. The movie was a victim of the fall out between WB and Legendary Pictures. The footage I saw at a previous Comic-Con had me really wanting to see it. The February release date does give me some pause as it's historically a dumping ground for bad movies. Despite all of that the trailer looks cool and has a pretty big scope to it.

Official Synopsis: In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar® winner Jeff Bridges) travels to find a prophesized hero born with incredible powers, the last Seventh Son (Ben Barnes).  Torn from his quiet life as a farmhand, the unlikely young hero embarks on a daring adventure with his battle-hardened mentor to vanquish a dark queen (Julianne Moore) and the army of supernatural assassins she has dispatched against their kingdom.

Seventh Son finally takes its charge into theaters February 7th, 2015.

Top 10 Badass Hero and Villain Headquarters

Obviously, when they’re alone and life is making them lonely, superheroes need a place to go. Whether it’s downtown or a massive crystal fortress, it’s good for them to have a place to decompress and plot new strategies. Conversely, super villains need a place to hide from the (completely ineffectual) law and devise their latest schemes. Theoretically, they could do this in a basement studio apartment, but where’s the fun in that? If you’re going to have a secret hideoout/lair/fortress/getaway, make it as cool as possible, with shiny gadgets and manly minimalist decor.

Samurai Stormtrooper Art by Alessandro Uggeri

I don’t think I should say too much about artist Alessandro Uggeri’s SamuraiTrooper design. I fear any further comments I make, other than that it’s a well-crafted piece of fan art, will cause a frenzy again. The last time I wrote an article involving a Samurai Stormtrooper, it caused a bit of a stir because it was retweeted by Jon Favreau. Before J.J. Abrams earned the Star Wars: Episode VII gig, Favreau was a fan favorite to take on the job, and his retweet and comment fueled those flames

With Rian Johnson taking on writing and directing duties for Episodes VIII and IX, and Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank helming the Star Wars standalone movies in the works, it’s seeming less likely that the man who kicked off the Marvel cinematic universe will get to play around in the Star Wars universe. We can hold out hope though, it’s a pretty big universe. Or, Favreau could just be the man to bring Patton Oswalt’s pitch for a Marvel/Star Wars interconnected universe to life. There ya go, Internet, I have shown you where the fire is. Now go, play with it.

Joaquin Phoenix May Be in Final Talks for DOCTOR STRANGE (UPDATED)

Earlier today, Collider editor Frosty teased that his site had a big scoop to drop today, and here it is: Joaquin Phoenix is in final talks to play the title role in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie, slated for release on July 8, 2016 with Scott Derrickson at the helm. Rumors have been swirling around the project for months, touching on everyone from Benedict Cumberbatch to, most recently, Jack Huston. In July there were reports that Phoenix was in the running, but that died down when there was no casting announcement at Comic-Con (Some people thought Cumberbatch’s attendance was evidence that he had been selected, but again, no dice).

Interestingly, Collider’s post sparked a Twitter war among the sites that trade in these secrets, with Latino Review’s El Mayimbe the most stridently in opposition, going so far as tweeting a screen grab of a text from a source, apparently at Phoenix’s agency, claiming that it was definitely not final. Here's how that all went down:

Wow. Things got heated there (Don't worry, Frosty and El Mayimbe have since made up). So it sounds like they are in talks but the deal may not go through because Phoenix won't commit to a long contract. Makes sense.

And also, I am really hoping Phoenix won't commit. Of all the names that have been bandied about, he is my least favorite, and I was really hoping they would go for a lesser known actor (Edgar Ramirez and Jack Huston were my favorite rumors). But we'll see. If the part goes to Phoenix, it's not like he's a bad actor. I am sure he will be excellent, and Doctor Strange is a key piece of Marvel's phase 3 strategy, opening up the supernatural section of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so I am sure they will pick someone who fits the script. Who do you want to see in the role?

UPDATE 6:34 PM EDT: A new twitterer has joined the fray refuting the basis of El Mayimbe's claims. Jeff Sneider of The Wrap just sent this one out:

Curiouser and curiouser...

Trailer for DOCTOR WHO Episode "Into the Dalek"

$

So did we all love Peter Capaldi’s debut on Doctor Who last week? Or do we still have reservations about the 12th Doctor? Or do we love him but we feel guilty about it because of some misguided loyalty to Matt Smith? These are complicated emotions to sort through. I liked Capaldi but didn’t really love the episode for reasons I won’t get into here. However, I do think regeneration episodes are tough and can’t wait to see him in the thick of it on Saturday.

Speaking of, here is a trailer for Episode 2, titled “Into the Dalek.” Obviously, given Clara’s confusion over the Doctor’s regeneration, we can’t be sure how much Clara remembers from being in the Doctor’s time stream. Will she remember that she was a Dalek in the future/past? because if she does, it might help them, assuming the title is literal. Which it probably isn’t. Either way, it’s always fun to see the Doctor battling his greatest enemy, who are apparently infinite in population even though he committed genocide against them. Or actually, I guess he didn’t anymore… This is going to do my head in. And while we’re on the subject of confusing things, the trailer begins with Clara chiding the Doctor for being late. Why is he ever late? He has a time machine!

But never mind. This episode will also introduce the Doctor’s new companion, Danny Pink, who, like Clara, teaches at Coal Hill School, a very important place in Who history. It will be exciting to see what he brings to the dynamic inside the TARDIS. I know Capaldi was adamant about not flirting with Clara, so maybe he’ll flirt with Danny instead. That would be different. Here's the episode synopsis:

A Dalek fleet surrounds a lone rebel ship, and only the Doctor can help them now… With the Doctor facing his greatest enemy, he needs Clara by his side. Confronted with a decision that could change the Daleks forever, he is forced to examine his conscience. Will he find the answer to the question, 'am I a good man?'

New Clip and Stills from Disney Shorts LAVA and FEAST

Disney has released two stills from the short that will be paired with Big Hero 6, called “Feast.” It follows a man’s love life as seen throughout the eyes of his dog, Winston. That is a really fun concept, and the dog is adorable.

Disney/Pixar have also released a clip from their upcoming short “Lava,” which will screen in front of Inside Out starting June 19, 2015. The short, in which a volcano sings about his longing for love, was directed by James Ford Murphy. Murphy was inspired by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s classic mashup of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “What a Wonderful World,” and you can hear it in the song. As for the look of the volcano, according to Yahoo,

To create the face of the mountain, Murphy used an amalgam of the faces of Kuahna Torres Kahele, the musician who is the voice of the mountain; Honeymooners star Jackie Gleeson, and the bulldog in the Chuck Jones animated classic “Feed the Kitty,” which Murphy considers perhaps his all-time favorite cartoon. “That cartoon has so much heart and so much of the humor comes from genuine emotion,” he says. “That was a major inspiration for us.”

I can’t wait to see the whole thing.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON to Completely Overhaul Team Roster?

$
0
0

We all know that the members of the Avengers team from the first movie are all coming back for Avengers: Age of Ultron and that they’ll be augmented by Paul Bettany as The Vision and Aaron Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen as the magical-don’t-call-us-mutant brother and sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. However, a rumor originating from Badass Digest suggests a much bigger sea change is on the horizon. Possible Age of Ultron SPOILERS ahead…
.
.
.
.
.

The very nature and fun of the Avengers team is its revolving door, which allows for greater tonal shifts as the remaining characters evolve. Throughout the comics there have been several major change ups to the roster. As Devin from Badass points out, after only being introduced as a member in Avengers #4, Captain America replaced all of the original team members in Avengers #16. Well, it looks like Cap could be reorganizing the team in the Marvel cinematic universe as well. According to their sources, towards the end of the film Steve Rogers will assemble a new team of familiar and new faces. Apparently, the list of new members has changed in-between drafts, aside from one name, Captain Marvel.

However, the studio is even considering holding back on the introduction of that character. Badass notes,

“But now I'm hearing that Marvel has cold feet about including her in the film. Not because they're against the character - my sources assure me she is coming and it's very plausible she could be on the team in Avengers 3 - but because they're not certain they want to introduce her in this way. They basically aren't certain they want to just drop her into the MCU fully formed in a team movie.”

Badass also reports that the studio is trying to avoid straight-up origin stories. So we’ll be given more films where we hit the ground running like Thor and Guardians of Galaxy, as opposed to more traditional origin stories that we’ve seen from Marvel like Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger. Introducing important Phase 3 characters at the end of the final chapter of Phase 2 would certainly help that strategy, a strategy similar to the one Warner Bros. hopes pays off for their DC movie universe.

With Joaquin Phoenix looking close to signing on as Doctor Strange, he could possibly show up at the end of Age of Ultron. As could one of two Ant-Men (Michael Douglas or Paul Rudd), especially considering his solo film will premiere later that summer.

Since this reassembling scene would take place towards the end of the film, if it’s not already shot, Marvel could cast the roles and shoot the scene closer to the release of the film to help keep the characters and casting under wraps.

These are all just rumors for now, but very plausible ones that could spell danger for some of the original Avengers team, or at least, the actors who play them.

For more details be sure to check out the full story at Badass Digest. Hat tip to /Film.

Beautiful Infographic Identifies Over 350 Kinds of Zombies

Holy hell, look at this you guys. No, really, look at it. This is beautiful. This is like the zombie infographic version of Maria Sibylla Merian’s plant illustrations. It looks ripped from an old anatomy book. Artist Jason Thompson is a bit of a zombie fanatic. When he hears the word zombie, he wants to know more, and not more as in, "Are they from the South?" or "Do they work at the CDC?" He gets deeper into things.

"As a horror fan, when I hear that something has 'zombies,' I want to know: are they fast zombies or slow zombies? Viral zombies, supernatural zombies, or alien-invasion zombies? Headshot zombies, living zombies, or writhing-severed-limbs zombies? Crazed, unreasonable people who are alive but act 'zombie-like'? Voodoo zombies, cannibal zombies or rotting Etruscan curse zombies?"

For Thompson, zombie isn’t a species of monster, it’s a genus with hundreds of variations. Literally. Hundreds. Over 350 variations, to be almost exact. His anatomy illustration inspired Map of Zombies is designed as a 24”x36” poster, and to figure out what type of zombies you’re dealing with, you start in the center, the brain, with one question — “Shoot them in the chest with a shotgun. Do they die?” Things divide further from there, as you move through the neurons into the body, echoing the way the infection spread in 1985’s Return of the Living Dead.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, The Map of Zombies is available in Thompson’s online store for just $30, which seems a small price to pay for the high aesthetic value, let alone the hours of entertainment it could provide.

GAP is embracing the gospel of Normcore, and they’ve decided that David Fincher is the man to sell it to the masses. Fincher has directed four commercials for the brand, and they are basically fantastic. I am packing up all my interesting and stylish clothes as we speak, and embracing a wardrobe of gap pants, plain Ts, and Birkenstocks.* It’s really fun for fans of the director (so, not Tyler Perry) to see his light, whimsical side that we never knew was there. Netflix Just Bought Exclusive Streaming Rights to THE BLACKLIST

Netflix has made a deal with NBC and Sony Pictures TV for the exclusive streaming rights for the hit drama The Black List. They will be paying $2 million per episode, which beats the price of $1.35 million they are paying out for AMC’s The Walking Dead.

High priced syndication deals like these have previously been the domain of cable TV. In June, Netflix surpassed HBO with over 50 million subscribers and continues to grow quickly in international markets.

After Breaking Bad started streaming on Netflix, its ratings doubled. So these deals not only get Netflix more subscribers, but helps shows tap its huge subscriber base. I really respect Netflix as they make these aggressive moves. I can’t wait to see what they will do next.
