Director Lee Daniels has confirmed via Twitter that Mike Epps (The Hangover and The Hangover III) is set to play Richard Pryor in a new biopic. Over the years other actors rumored to be up for the role have included Nick Cannon, Michael B. Jordan, and Marlon Wayans

Daniels released a photo of himself (below) with Epps and Oprah Winfrey with the following caption, "Get ready y'all- #MikeEpps as #RichardPryor." Deadline previously reported that Epps blew everyone away at his audition and that Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway were on the list of options to play Pryor’s widow, Jennifer.

The movie will depict Pryor’s controversial brand of comedy and his battle with drugs. Pryor's widow, Jennifer Pryor, is also producing the film, and she "brings to the project more than 50 pages of Pryor's personal journals, which offer a glimpse into his brilliant, but dark, mind."

Richard Pryor was a freakin' funny comedian. I loved watching the films he starred in, and the guy always made me laugh. This should make for a very interesting film that tells a story that needs to be heard.

Henry Cavill got all decked out in his Superman costume on the set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to take on the ALS ice bucket challenge. He was joined by Amy Adams in what I assume is her Lois Lane outfit. They are both real sports about it, but Cavill gets multiple buckets of ice cold water dumped on him, and it's great. International Trailer for WHIPLASH with J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller

international-trailer-for-whiplash-with-jk-simmons-and-miles-teller

Whiplash is seriously one of the greatest films you will see this year, so when it comes out on October 10th, don't hesitate to watch it. It was one of the first films that I saw this year, and it's still holding strong as one of my favorites of the year.

Miles Teller stars in the film as Andrew Neyman, a young jazz drummer who attends one of the top music schools in the country. He ends up under the guidance of the school’s fearsome maestro of jazz, Terence Fletcher, brilliantly played by J.K. Simmons. This is not a guy you want to mess with, and you'll get a little taste of the insanity that this movie has to offer in the new international trailer below.

Both of the main actors give the best performances of their careers. If you haven't already, make sure to read our review of it here. Here's a synopsis:

A pedagogical thriller and an emotional S&M two-hander, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash is brilliantly acted by Miles Teller as an eager jazz drummer at a prestigious New York music academy and J.K. Simmons as the teacher whose method of terrorizing his students is beyond questionable, even when it gets results. Dubbed “Full Metal Jacket at Juilliard” at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, Chazelle’s jazz musical was developed from his short film of the same name, which premiered at Sundance the previous year. The live jazz core that is fused with Justin Hurwitz’s ambient score, the blood-on-the-drum-kit battle between student and teacher, and the dazzling filmmaking will keep your pulse rate elevated from beginning to end. A kinesthetic depiction of performance anxiety—you don’t need to be a musician to feel it—Whiplash also presents us with a moral issue open to debate.

I won't give anything away, but this movies has one of the greatest endings ever. Thanks to Ad Vitam for the trailer.

"Oh man are these guys doing STUFF!!! Why would anyone draw the good guys when there are badasses with stinky powers and wispidy capes?! *girly sigh*"

The characters include Skeletor, Evil Lyn, Trapjaw,Tri-Klops, Stinkor, Hordak, Merman, Clawful and Beastman.

THE NEWSROOM Season 3 - Copier Teaser

HBO has released the first teaser for the third and final season of Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom. The clever promo features a copying machine printing out pages of the script for  the final episodes, and they tease story plot points of espionage, a court case, and more. I've really enjoyed the first two seasons of this series, and I wish it wasn't so short lived, but hopefully it has a strong ending.

HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo had this to say in a statement:

“The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking. I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.”

Series co-star Olivia Munn added that the show will end the way Sorkin wants it to:

“I love [Season 3 being the last] because, one, I think it’s so much better to do a project where everyone’s excited about doing it and the work is really great and you’re excited about. Sorkin writes every single episode. I’m sure there’s other things that he has to do in his life, that he wants to do, and that takes a lot of time and energy. It’s like, let’s end when we still are on top and it’s feeling doing great and we’re doing work that we love. “

The final episodes of The Newsroom premiere in November 2014.

Elijah Wood is set to produce a new zombie film through his production company SpectreVision, which specializes in developing horror genre films. The movie is called Curse the Darkness, and it's described as an "anthropological zombie film, and will take its cues from purported real-life roots of zombie, which involved chemically-induced slavery widely practiced by plantation owners around the Haitian Revolution of 1803."

The producers of the film released a statement explaining that the story is “set against the modern day backdrop of undocumented workers laboring in the Louisiana sugarcane fields, the story is a terrifying look at the systematic exploitation of the labor force by large corporate entities, as well as a portrait of the plight of undocumented workers in the United States.”

Wood had this to say in a statement:

“We always said we wanted to stay away from the zombie genre, as it’s been so well covered, but when we read Brandon’s script, we encountered a take on the genre that simply had to be realized. Curse the Darkness is both a chilling exercise in horror and an incisive polemic against the conditions of illegal immigrants in this country.”

Jorge Michel Grau is set to direct the project from a screenplay by Brandon Maurice Williams. The movie will start production on October 27th in Louisiana and it's currently casting.

The 13 Most Iconic Leather Jackets in Film History

Most iconic movie characters ooze confidence, flirt with danger, and can take a beating. So these cinematic rebels and renegades need their clothes to be able to do the same. No other article of clothing is equal parts rugged and stylish like a leather jacket. And no article of clothing can elevate someone’s swagger or embody their whole persona and purpose quite like it either. Leather jackets say things about about a character before they even utter a single line of dialogue. Simply put: Jackets speak louder than words.

GeekTyrant has joined forces with Green Label to shine a light on the 13 most iconic leather jackets in film history. We delve into why these jackets remain as cool as they ever were, and how they helped define the characters that wore them. Here are…

Weird Al Yankovic's Awkward TV Show Themed Emmy Performance

When I watched Weird Al Yankovic's Emmy Award performance, I honestly didn't know what to think. Don't get me wrong, I love Weird Al, but there was just something very awkward and off about watching his performance. He performed a medley of TV theme songs with added lyrics.

He riffed on the theme songs for shows such as Mad Men, Scandal, Homeland, Modern Family, and Game of Thrones, the lyrics he wrote for each one amusingly described the plot of the show. At one point Andy Samberg even joined him on stage. It was easily one of the stranger parts of the Emmy Awards ceremony. The best part was when he was singing to George R.R. Martin to type as fast as he could in regards to Game of Thrones.

In the end I think if could have been better. It was more strange that it was funny. In case you missed it you can watch it below.

BATMAN Spotted on Batcycle in Japan

Most photos and videos of Batman come out of Gotham. Usually anything that isn't super dark and blurry mysteriously disappears from the internet. In a rare sighting, Batman has been spotted in Japan and captured in sharp photos and a video. It's unknown why he was in Japan or who he might be pursuing. A few superhero conspiracy sites think it might be the related to recent actively in Japan from a secret group known as The League of Shadows. Secret organizations sound far-fetched to me, but so does a man who can fly.

These photos come via the twitter account of Nippon.com and video via Srigala Ganteng. Enjoy the photos and video while you can, odds are Batman or that rumored group of superheroes will take them down.

Pixar’s INSIDE OUT: First Look at Riley

Not much has been officially released for Pixar’s Inside Out. The GeekTyrant staff did get a sneak peek at the film during D23, but other than that, they've kept a tight lid on it. But now we have a look at main character/setting, Riley.

Inside Out takes place inside of the mind of a young tween named Riley. Each facet of her emotions is expressed as individual characters Joy (Amy Poehler), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Anger (Lewis Black). This team of emotions work together to help Riley as she adjusts to living in a new city. Inside Out is written and directed by Pete Docter whose last film, Up, was emotionally resonant and fun.

This screenshot comes via Pixar Times comes from a video featurette that you can watch at Disney Movies Anywhere. It requires registering with Disney, but it’s free.

Inside Out hits theaters and emotions June 19th, 2015.

Sneak Peek at Lucy Lawless in AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

One of the big announcements at the Marvel Television Presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this year was that Lucy Lawless was joining the cast of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Unfortunately for them, the news broke three days before the event, so the announcement was sort of hilariously lackluster. After a big set up, executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen had to say, “I can confirm that Lucy Lawless is joining the show…” But the news is still pretty exciting, or at least as exciting as anything related to the tepid Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can be. Lawless plays Agent Isabelle Hartley, and we have our first look at her in the season premiere. She looks… like an employee of a government agency. She definitely either works for S.H.I.E.L.D. or for the DMV.

Okay, so the picture doesn’t tell us much. But one thing we know about Lawless is she always finds a way to kick ass, whether she’s a warrior princess or a school principal in Pawnee, and even though Marvel released a photo where she looks like a harried working mother, her particular brand of badass is bound to shine through once she’s actually on our screens. Unlike some of the other new additions to the series, Lawless is playing an original character, so we don’t know anything about her. I kind of hope she’s a villain, or at least an antagonist. Who do you think she’s going to be?

What do the Avengers and Hello Kitty have in common? Nothing, the answer is nothing. Which is why this is such a weird and unexpected mashup. My favorite of the bunch is Thor, who rocks pink bows with the confidence that only an Asgardian could have. Source: Rocketnews24 via Geek X Girls.

THE FLASH Poster Is Full of Easter Eggs

You’ve gotta give The Flash some style points for his zig-zag running pattern, because there is no practical reason for why he’s not running in a straight line. The twitter account for the show recently tweeted this poster with the copy, “Discover what makes a hero.” I really enjoyed the pilot episode and excited to see how the full season shapes up.

Andrew Dyce has circled a bunch of easter eggs in the poster below. For a full breakdown of what each of these things are, check out the full post on Screenrant.

The Flash premiers on Tuesday, October 7 at 8pm on The CW.

Homer Simpson Takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

It’s great to see so many celebrities taking the Ice Bucket Challenge to help raise awareness about ALS and to help raise money to fight it. I was really happy to see Henry Cavill and Amy Adams do the challenge dressed in character as Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. But for anyone concerned about the water being wasted for these videos, here’s a challenger who doesn’t waste a drop (of real water anyway)… Homer Simpson! Voiced by Dan Castellaneta, Homer takes the challenge and nominates a couple Springfieldians, as well as an unexpected name who I hope takes that challenge, because this person has plenty of money and it would be amazing to see his “hair” get wet.

IRON GIANT Puppet Crashes Cosplay Day

Borvise basically brought a bazooka to a gun fight by parading a humongous Iron Giant puppet at Cosplay Day Singapore 2014 — okay, I’m assuming it’s really big, but us Asians look small next to anything. Cue racist rimshot: BA DUM GONG! I have no idea how the puppeteer/cosplayer(?) can see, all I know is he did a fantastic job bringing the classic cartoon character to life, down to the rivet count, the glowing eyes, and the all black outfit that screams, “Don’t look at me!!!”

New Poster for Robert Downey Jr.'s THE JUDGE

$

Robert Downey Jr. just tweeted a first look at a new poster for his next movie, The Judge, in which he plays “a successful lawyer [who] returns to his hometown for his mother's funeral only to discover that his estranged father, the town's judge, is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.” Robert Duvall plays his father, the titular judge, as you can see from the poster. Downey is doing his standard look-up-my-nostrils pose, and we would say he needs to watch this tutorial, but he seems to be doing all right for himself, so we’ll let it slide.

The Judge isn’t the geekiest movie ever made (all right, it isn’t geeky at all), but we love Downey, and this is a passion project for him, so we hope it does well. The trailer, which you can watch here, is pretty dramatic, but the director, David Dobkin, is mostly known for comedies, and lord knows Downey can get a laugh, so it’ll be interesting to see how the movie balances the funny with the family drama.

The Judge also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Vera Farmiga, and Vincent D’Onofrio, and you can catch it in U.S. theaters on October 10.
