Photo of the First Disneyland Ticket Ever Sold

This is a photo of the first Disneyland gate-ticket ever sold. This was from opening day on July 17th, 1955. It was purchased for $1 by Roy O. Disney and found in his desk after he passed away.

These days people who want to go to Disneyland have to pay 96 freakin' bucks. It's amazing to see how much Disneyland has grown over the years, and how it manages to still entertain people. So much so that they are willing to spend crazy amounts of money to be entertained.

Here's a little story about the Disney archives from the LA Times a few years back. Disney basically hired a guy to go through the desks and offices of Walt and Roy after they died.

After Walt Disney died in 1966, his grieving staff sealed his office suite in Burbank, and even as work proceeded on "The Jungle Book" there was anxiety that the company's past might be brighter than its future.

Four years later, those worries deepened as key executives approached retirement, including Walt's older brother, Roy O. Disney. That's why, in 1970, the company handed the key to Walt's still-sealed office to a former UCLA research librarian named Dave Smith, who was sent into the chamber to learn its history.

"I didn't expect this to become my life's work, but it did," Smith, 69, said on a recent afternoon as he gave a tour of the Disney Archives, a massive collection spread across several in-house libraries and high-security warehouse space filled with Disney movie props, costumes, toys, art, animation, vintage theme-park gear and company publications.

It all began with the items that Smith found in Walt's desk all those years ago.

"It was an eerie thing to sit … in his chair and count the paper clips in the drawer," Smith recalled with a nervous chuckle. On the bookshelves, he discovered books and letters given to Walt by Upton Sinclair, Winston Churchill and C. S. Lewis, who inscribed one of his books of poetry with the words: "From one visionary to another."

Here are a couple of photos from opening day:

The first 5 minutes have been released for the Lifetime movie The Unauthorized Saved By The Bell Story. The purpose of the movie is to expose the challenges that these kids faced while growing up under public scrutiny, at the same time they were trying to maintain the squeaky clean image of their characters on and off screen. The film is told from the point of view of Dustin Diamond, who played Screech in the classic 90s TV series. The movie is based on the actor's book Behind the Bell.

The scene you are about to watch takes place in 1990 Cincinnati with the young Saved by the Bell actors riding in a limo to an event. While they are riding they are unsure of the reception they'll receive. Of course, that all changes when they start to drive through a mob of screaming teenage girls.

The movie will air on Monday, September 1st, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Artist Fintan Magee created this wonderfully adorable piece of Batman art that he called "3 Bats and a Bird." It features three kids dressed up as Batman and one as Robin. It's always fun to go to geek conventions and see a ton of kids dressed up as superheroes. I'll be taking my own kids to Salt Lake City Comic-Con next month, and they are looking forward to dressing up. They're still trying to figure out who they want to go as, though. DeviantArt artist AndrewSS7 created these chilling fan-made posters for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. The series of posters is called War Aftermath, and they feature various elements from the Star Wars universe with major battle damage. Who knows if we'll see any visuals like this in the upcoming films, but these are still really cool, and they get the imagination pumping. Thanks to io9 for the heads up on these!

Marvel has provided Empire Magazine with a new photo of Hawkeye from Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is our best look yet at the new costume Jeremy Renner will be sporting in the new movie. The wider shot below of the same photo includes Whedon instructing Renner on how to shoot a bow and arrow. The actor definitely needs it, as he didn't really look like he knew how to really shoot one in the first movie.

I actually kind of like the look of Hawkeye's new outfit. It has a lot more style than the first one did. What do you all think of his new look? The epic-looking Avengers sequel hits theaters on May 1st, 2015!

Growing Up Geek - A Lesson in Thievery

growing-up-geek-a-lesson-in-thievery

A person can't go through life and not learn a lesson about stealing something that isn't theirs. This is a lesson I learned early on and something I'll never forget. It has guided me in my life and has helped me in my integrity.

I was about five years old and I used to spend a lot of time with my grandpa while my parents were at work. My grandpa kind of spoiled me by buying me toys and candy and, of course, would take me to the movies all the time.

One afternoon my grandpa had to go to the store to pick some food up for dinner. After we were done filling the cart with food we were standing in the checkout line to pay for the food. As I was standing there, I stared in awe at that damn candy rack. Those candy racks in the register lines at the stores have been there for as long as I can remember, and they will always be there.

My eye caught a package grape Bubble Yum Bubble Gum. I wanted it, and I wanted it bad. For some reason I didn't ask my grandpa if he would get it for me. If I had he would have said yes, but instead when he went up to pay for the food I snagged the bubble gum and shoved it in my pocket. I didn't think anyone would miss it.

We walked out to the van, put the food away and I jumped in the very back. On a side note, that van didn't have any seat belts. The safety requirements for cars back then were ridiculous. I'm surprised a lot if us came out of the early '80s alive. Anyway, I took the gum out of my pocket opened it up and started shoving pieces of it in my mouth as fast as I could. I got four pieces of gum into my mouth before my grandpa asked what that smell was. I was like "oh, crap!" Of course I replied to his question with, "nothing" while my mouth was full of gum.

My grandpa's not stupid, so he pulled over and asked what I had. I slowly crawled up to the front of the van and proceeded to show him a torn purple bubble gum package with one piece left inside. He asked where I got it and I told him I took it from the store. He gave me a very disappointed look, and it's a look I'll never forget. He told me to sit down, so I did. He made a u-turn and we headed back to the store.

I didn't know what to expect, but when we parked into the parking lot my grandpa got out of the van and walked over to the passenger side where I was and opened the door. I got out of the van and he proceeded to tell me that what I had done was wrong. I stole a packet of gum, and after my grandpa explained to me why it was wrong, I felt absolutely terrible about it. My grandpa may have been tough as hell, but he was an honest man.

He took my hand and we walked back into the store where I proceeded to admit to the store manager what I had done, and I apologized. My grandpa paid for the gum and we went home. I think I cried the whole way home because I felt so bad about what I had done. In the end, that experience and the lesson I learned from my grandpa played a huge part in my life and helped shape me into the person that I am today.

What's crazy about this whole thing is that to this day whenever I go to the store, and I'm standing in line at the register to pay for my food, I look over at that rack of candy and remember that experience, and how I felt. It's one of those feelings that I never want to feel again.

Do you remember the first time you ever stole something? Feel free to share your experience if you're so inclined.

Universal Pictures has released a couple photos from Matthew Vaughn's upcoming action spy thriller Kingsman: The Secret Service. One features the back of Colin Firth's main secret agent character using his umbrella weapon. The other shows Samuel L. Jackson as the main villain Valentine. When talking about the character he plays in the story Jackson said,

"Watching From Russia With Love, it was like, 'Oh my God, what is this?' I had never seen a film like that before in my life. I always thought of myself more as Bond than the villain. But as I got older, I realised that villains are a lot more colourful and a lot more interesting and a lot more outside the box. And the whole tongue-in-cheek Bondian aspect of the film is pretty great. It was fun to sit there and do that, using the metaphors of the Bond film."

In case you missed the trailer for the film, you can click here. I've seen a lot of cool footage from this movie that isn't included in the trailer. This movie is going to offer some pretty awesome action sequences, and it seems like the story is solid as well.

The movie will be released in theaters on Febuary 13th, 2015!

Adventurous INDIANA JONES Poster Art by Mark McHaley

Indiana Jones is one of the greatest adventure movie characters ever created, and he's been perfectly portrayed by Harrison Ford. I love that this character exists, and I can't imagine what the world would be like without him. I'm excited for the prospect of another movie because with Disney and Lucasfilm more involved with it than George Lucas there's a good chance that another movie would be just as amazing as the first three. The reason I say that is because they are fans of the franchise just like they are of Star Wars, and from what I've seen and heard about Star Wars: Episode VII, I love the direction they are taking it. The team of people behind these movies have seen the mistakes Lucas has made, and I know they aren't going to repeat them. So yes, I believe that when they move forward with another Indiana Jones movie, they are going to give the fans a film they'll enjoy.

The poster art you see here comes from artist Mark McHaley, and it pays tribute to the first two Indiana Jones films. I'm sure the artist will release one for The Last Crusade in the near future, and when he does, I'll make sure to post it for you!

3 New TV Spots for STAR WARS REBELS

Lucasfilm and Disney have released three new TV spots for the upcoming animated adventure series Star Wars: Rebels. The more I see from the series, the more excited I get to watch it. This looks like it will be just as good, if not better than The Clone Wars

It is a dark time in the galaxy, as the evil Galactic Empire tightens its grip of power from world to world. As the series begins, Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet, ruling with an iron fist and ruining the lives of its people. The clever and motley crew of the starship Ghost is amongst a select few who are brave enough to stand against the Empire. Together, this ragtag group will face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.

The series will make its debut with a one-hour movie called "Spark of Rebellion" on Friday, October 3rd, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel. The series itself will then make its premiere Monday, October 13th at 9 p.m on Disney XD.

HBO Planning SHUTTER ISLAND Series with Martin Scorsese

Another feature film is set to be adapted for the small screen. HBO, Paramount Television and Martin Scorsese are teaming up to develop a show based on the 2010 hit film Shutter Island.

The series is tentatively being called Ashecliffe, which is the named of the isolated insane asylum that the story is set in. According to Deadline Scorsese will direct the pilot episode, which will be written by Dennis Lehane, who is the author of the best selling book that the movie was based on.

The report reveals that the series will take place before the events that took place in the film. "The focus is the past of hospital, and the secrets and misdeeds perpetrated by its founders who erected the hospital in the early 20th Century and developed the methods of treatment use for the mentally ill."

I'm not only loved the movie that the series is based on, but this subject matter has always intrigued me. I spent years studying the history of what happened in these insane asylums, and the things these doctors and nurses did to other human beings in the name of science was absolutely barbaric. The subject matter is something that will work perfectly for a series on HBO. I'm looking forward to see how this series develops.

The co-director of the Blair Which Project, Eduardo Sánchez, has made a found footage film that revolves around the legendary Bigfoot. The movie is called Exists, and today we bring you the first trailer. When I first heard about this movie a couple years ago I hoped it would turn out to be good, but after watching this trailer it looks like filmmaking amateur hour. That's a shame, because the world could use a good Bigfoot movie!

For five friends, it was a chance for a summer getaway— a weekend of camping in the Texas Big Thicket. But visions of a carefree vacation are shattered with an accident on a dark and desolate country road. In the wake of the accident, a bloodcurdling force of nature is unleashed—something not exactly human, but not completely animal— an urban legend come to terrifying life…and seeking murderous revenge.

Lionsgate will release the movie on iTunes and in theaters this fall on October 24th.

The Gang's All Here in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Art by Patrick Brown

If you haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, well, you're missing out on one of the funniest and action packed movies of the year. That said, this art by Patrick Brown doesn't spoil anything, and perfectly encapsulates the characters and tone of the film (Batista in particular is eerily accurate). Just like his other work this one features slick color effects and a plethora of dynamic action poses. It came together really well, especially since he drew each character individually and then pieced the whole thing together after the fact. Pretty impressive, and if you want to catch his other work you can see it here

I can't state how much I want that Star Lord jacket. It just looks so damn cool.

New BIG HERO 6 TV Spot - Baymax Vs. Balloon

Walt Disney Animation has released yet another comedic TV spot for their superhero adventure film Big Hero 6. The spot shows us that even though the robot Baymax is programed to do a lot of things, it doesn't mean that he's an expert. In this case, he attempts to make a balloon animal. I'm really excited about this movie, and I think Disney fans are going to love what it has to offer.

Big Hero 6 is a heartfelt comedy adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, clean freak Wasabi No-Ginger, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a cutting-edge robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, "Big Hero 6" is directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt), and produced by Roy Conli (Tangled).

The film hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.

Take A Deep Breath, DOCTOR WHO Is Back

The latest episode of Doctor Who blew my mind with regard to my expectations. I followed any news about the change of the Doctor like a creepy stalker following his one and only love’s decision on where to go to college. To be honest, I grew more and more concerned as the days, weeks, and months drew nearer to the Doctor’s return.  I nearly wet my pants when I saw the first images of the T-Rex in London. The words “Come on, Steven Moffatt ol’ buddy, don’t let me down” ran through my head for a year. Yes, I got that quote from Lando Calrissian of Star Wars.

The premiere of Doctor Who Season 8 arrived. My sister made blue cupcakes and bought custard to commemorate the occasion. We yelled at the pre-show to end, and finally... it started.

Almost immediately, the episode extinguished my first concern – Peter Capaldi. I know different opinions abound, but I freaking loved him!  Matt Smith always seemed like an old man in a young man’s body. Sure, there were some moments where he showed a bit of youthful innocence, but with Capaldi my first impression was not a “Rebel Time Lord” like he was being portrayed in reports and the trailers, but rather a young man in an old man’s body. He seemed like a complete foil to Smith’s Doctor.

Then the episode addressed my second, much larger concern – everyone else.

I hate – HATE – when something crazy happens in a TV show and no one is affected. Guess what! Lots of crap happens and humans need to deal with it mentally and emotionally. I like to feel like the characters are real and relatable… maybe that’s just me. So, I thoroughly enjoyed that a significant portion of the episode is spent on Clara struggling to come to terms with the change. I find it interesting that the modern character struggled, while the Victorian characters accepted the change. In Victorian England, oddities were swept under the rug and ignored.  (Look at Jane Eyre or half of the Sherlock Holmes stories!)

The majority of my concern about when the Doctor regenerates... was the group as a whole. This is why I liked that Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax appeared. While Clara struggled with the change, the Victorian team set out to adapt quickly and accept the new Doctor. They supported him and tried to help Clara do the same.

I wondered how someone would take over for Christopher Eccleson. David Tennant is my favorite Doctor. I decided I wouldn’t like Smith on principle, and yet he was thoroughly enjoyable! I loved the new Doctor, though! I LOVED IT! I can hardly wait to see more. Steven Moffatt, you’ve done it again. You proved me wrong, and I am so happy that you did.

New STAR WARS REBELS Short - "Entanglement"

The third Star Wars Rebels animated short has been released. It's called "Entanglement," and in it the character Zeb "fails to meet with Kanan at a specified rendezvous point…and instead finds himself joyfully battling many, many stormtroopers." We posted a little clip from this short a couple of days ago, but this is the full thing, and it's really entertaining. I love the adventurous feel of this clip, and the music kind of gives it an Indiana Jones vibe.

Star Wars Rebels premieres on October 3rd at 9 p.m. on Disney Channel with a movie, and then the series will debut on October 13th at 9 p.m. on Disney XD.

Jack Huston in the Running for DOCTOR STRANGE?

Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston was one of the actors up for the role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy before Chris Pratt landed it. But, according to the site This Is Infamous, Huston is now in the running for Doctor Strange

According to the site, "out of all the properties that have been incorporated into Marvel’s big screen model, Doctor Strange is Feige’s baby, and he is handling this project with care to make sure it is about as close to perfect as possible. As a result, him and director Scott Derrickson have been kicking over a lot of rocks, seeing what they may turn up as they look for the ideal candidate."

They go on to say that the studio is very close to choosing their leading man, and Huston is definitely a great actor to throw in the pool of other actors that have included Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, Edgar Ramirez, and Joaquin Phoenix. If the rumor of Huston being involved is true, he is a late entry into the process, and as we've seen in the past from Marvel, those late entries have a good chance of being cast. Both Chris Pratt and Chris Evans were thrown into the mix as major contenders in the last moments of casting.

I actually really like the idea of Huston playing Strange, he's got the look and the acting chops. He's also not that big of an actor yet so they can get him on the cheap, and explode his career. There are a lot of great actors in the running though and whoever Marvel brings on in the end is going to be the guy they feel who can perfectly portray the character. The studio has done a great job so far casting their films so I trust their judgement.

ANT-MAN Easter Eggs Already Being Discovered

Ant-Man has only been shooting for a week, and we've seen one official photo of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang in San Francisco, and of course some set photos have leaked out as well, which we can't post here. But, in those set photos there's an Easter egg that connects Ant-Man to 2008s The Incredible Hulk

In that movie, Bruce Banner is hiding out in Brazil and working at a soft drink bottling plant. One day, he accidentally cuts himself at work, and his blood drips into one of the bottles. Later on in the movie, Stan Lee drinks that bottle of soda that Banner bled in. I included that scene for you to watch below.

Superhero Hype posted a picture from the set of the film that you can see here, that features an advertisement poster for that same soda. It's nothing major, but it's still cool to see the kind of detail that Marvel is including in their films to connect their cinematic universe together.

Ant-Man is being directed by Peyton Reed, and it also stars Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and Corey Stoll. It will be released on July 17th, 2015.
