Casting Roundup: Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Brown Findlay Land Roles

In today's casting roundup we have some news about Reese Witherspoon and Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay.

THR reports that Witherspoon's Pacific Standard banner has bought the rights to a children’s book series titled Pennyroyal’s Princess Boot Camp written by M.A. Larson. This is the first book in the series from Larson, who got his start as Mike Nichols' assistant. Witherspoon will produce and is set to play a supporting role in the story, described as "a modern fairy tale about a school that shapes girls into warrior princesses to battle against an ever-growing terror of wicked witches." Princess Boot Camp was just picked up by Putnam Children's as a two-book series. Pacific Standard is planning to develop the film as a possible franchise.

Here is what Witherspoon had to say:
Finally, there is a princess story that reflects the values young women truly want to embody. These princesses are strong, independent and fierce, and the knights are their match. In telling their story, Larson has created a magical universe that everyone will love to get lost in.
Deadline reports that Findlay has won the lead role in Warner Bros.' Winter's TaleAkiva Goldsman picked her out of a bunch of other leading ladies for the adaptation of the 1983 Mark Helprin novel. Goldsman will make his directorial debut on the film. Findlay will play "a dying woman who falls in love with a thief who breaks into her home, a palatial West Side mansion, in a drama that takes place in 19th century and contemporary Manhattan."
Aaron Johnson and Garrett Hedlund are the frontrunners for the role of the thief. Russell Crowe is in final negotiations to play half a demon named Pearly Soames, and Will Smith is rumored to be attached in smaller roles as a favor to Goldsman.

I would much rather watch Winter's Tale personally, but I am sure that Boot Camp will be a good family film. Which movie are you more interested in watching?

Navy Develops Robotic Jellyfish

In weird government experiement news today, we have CNET reporting that the US Navy has developed the first robotic jellyfish! Made of sillicone and spring loaded steel, these mechanical beasts of burden are arguably more high-tech than the species they are modeled on. It operates through a chemical reaction of exposure to hydrogen and oxygen, which then causes artificial muscles to contract and move throughout the water. Once deformed, it's able to return to it's natural shape through use of a "shape-memory alloy." Watch a video of it in action below!

DREAM GIVER - Wonderfully Animated Short Film

Check out this incredibly wonderful animated short film called Dream Giver. It was created by Tyler Carter at BYU's Center for Animation. Not only does it have a good story, the animation is extremely well done. I think there's a lot of talent shown in this short both with CG and traditional animation. It definitely put a smile on my face.

Here's a short synopsis:

A regular night of dream delivering turns into a literal nightmare when a boy's book of ancient mythology comes alive.

Watch the animated short below and let us know if this is something you'd like to see turned into a feature film.

Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED Getting TV Series Reboot?

$

Clive Barker (Hellraiser) looks to be developing a reboot of his 1990 film Nightbreed for the small screen. Rabid Doll (via Blastr) is reporting that Barker looks to be poised to reboot the film based on his own 1988 horror novella Cabal. The film version starred Craig Sheffer (One Tree Hill), Anne Bobby, David Cronenberg, Charles Haid (Hill Street Blues) and Pinhead himself, actor Doug Bradley.

The story followed "a secret community of ancient and weird-looking creatures want to avoid the human world as well as a seriously deranged serial killer with the help of a young man named Boone (Sheffer), who, unbeknownst to himself, has his very own special destiny in Midian."

Here is what Barker had to say about the project:

"It will have a chance to be as sexy or as graphic in terms of the violence as we need it to be. For example, do you have Spartacus over there? Oh my God, it redefines gruesome...I also applaud them for finally realizing it's not a bad thing to see a manhood once in a while—it's not as if half the world doesn't see it daily."

He goes on to say:

"The sensitivity of our culture has sort of caught up with Nightbreed. I don't wish to be immodest, but the general sense is that the movie failed because people didn't want to associate with the monster, and I think our culture has changed—I think our culture is now ready to embrace the ambiguity.

"You've only got to look at Twilight, where obviously the monsters are the good guys—I'm not a huge fan, but I'm enough of a fan to watch and see monsters being celebrated."

This is one of the only Barker movies I actually enjoyed as a kid. I am not sure how I feel about it being made into a TV series, but I would rather see that than a movie reboot.

Do you like the idea of Nightbreed getting the reboot treatment?

We've got a fourth behind the scenes featurette for director Wrath of the Titans that showcases the king of the titans Kronos.  The video includes concept art, interviews with the creative talent, and some new footage from the movie of the destroyer of the universe going epically ballistic.

Wrath of the Titans hits theaters on March 30th, 2012. Check out the video featurette below, and click here to watch the featurette for the Chimera, here for the Makhia and here for the Minotaur.

Synopsis:

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Sam Worthington) --the demigod son of Zeus (Liam Neeson)--is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Review: Jason Reitman's Live Read of THE BIG LEBOWSKI

(Photo to be updated to one from the actual event later, so check back for that if you're interested.)

I've been going to Jason Reitman's Live Reads at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (hosted by Film Independent) for a while now - you can read my reviews of The Princess Bride and Reservoir Dogs if you wish - and they've been great. The Princess Bride was a joy, and Reservoir Dogs took on a new meaning when, during Black History Month, Reitman recast Tarantino's classic with an all-black cast. But with tonight's event, I believe Reitman hit that state of nirvana he's been hoping for since he began this series: that perfect blend of the perfect actors reading the perfect script in the perfect way, and the Live Read has never been better.

This was the last event of the season, until Reitman finishes with his "f*cking day job" filming his next movie and returns for more in October. So perhaps it was a feeling of finality that pushed everyone to their limits, but whatever it was, it affected all of the actors equally. In previous events, there have been the occasional...I don't want to call them "weak links," but if I'm being harsh, that's what I'd call them, and tonight, there was no weak link to be found. Everyone was on point, there were almost no missed cues or botched lines, and the cast fit so well with these characters that for the first time in this series, I could truly imagine the original movie being replaced with this cast and - dare I say it - that film would have been just as good, if not better, than the original.

First, the cast. Jason Alexander played the wheelchair-bound Mr. Lebowski; Brandt, originated by Phillip Seymour Hoffman, was played to utter perfection by Fred Savage; Live Read staple Nick Kroll read the parts of Jesus Quintana, Jackie Treehorn, and more; Bunny Lebowski, originated by Tara Reid, was read by Jason Reitman's sister, Catherine (who appears occasionally on "It's Always Sunny"); Hank Azaria took over for Steve Buscemi in the role of Donny; Julianne Moore's Maude Lebowski was played by Christina Hendricks; Rainn Wilson was magnificent as John Goodman's Walter Sobchak; the iconic role of The Dude, originated by Jeff Bridges, went to the perfectly cast Seth Rogen; and finally, the role of The Stranger, originated by Sam Elliott, was played by...Sam Elliott.

Listening to these fantastic actors fly through the dense dialogue of the Coen Brothers' phenomenal neo-noir somehow did the unexpected: it made the story itself more clear. Robbed of the visuals and only concentrating on the words on the page, I got a level of enjoyment I've never received watching the film version of this story; everything fell into place, and not only did the script's highlights become more evident, but the brilliance of the screenplay itself shone through brighter than the film version has ever done for me.

In previous installments, it's been easy for me to pick a favorite performance. Not this time - it's impossible for me to convey how excellent these actors were tonight, which I guess is part of Reitman's whole "no video taping" policy: he wants to create something special for one night only, never to be reproduced. Well, he and his cast did that tonight in spades. Rainn Wilson may not carry the physical presence of John Goodman, but moment after moment, Wilson's performance rivaled Goodman's in every other way. He was intense, confident, loud, never wavered, never missed a line, and downright hilarious because, like Goodman, he played it straight the entire time. And I can't tell you how impressed I was at Seth Rogen's ability to breathe his own life into The Dude after Bridges created the definitive version of that character. Rogen's Dude was a bit faster with his frustration, like his interpretation of the character always smoked juuuuuust a little bit less weed than Bridges' version.

Fred Savage was the biggest surprise of the night for me, imitating Seymour Hoffman's Brandt so brilliantly that if you looked away for a second, you might have thought PSH was actually in the room. Hendrick's drawling Maude mirrored Moore's in all the right ways, and Catherine's lines as Bunny - few though they were - drew laughs from the crowd. Where the hell did Jason Alexander come from as Mr. Lebowski? His angry bellowing immediately conjured memories of his own iconic character, George Costanza, and that man is perhaps the best there ever was or will be at playing "flustered." Kroll and Azaria kept things light and - along with Savage - slipped into multiple roles throughout the evening, including the infamous Nihilists which had everyone cracking up. And Sam Elliott was just as awesome as you'd think - in fact, he could barely get through his opening lines because everyone broke out into spontaneous applause at hearing that amazing bass voice of his. "This is gonna be a long night," he mumbled as he smiled at the crowd, Elliott's own badass way of acknowledging our appreciation.

The whole evening just worked, an effortless reading of an excellent piece of writing by some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. The character dynamics were flawless, the reaction times were spot-on, and - perhaps most importantly for an event like this - everyone was clearly enjoying themselves on stage, and that enthusiasm translated to the crowd. Jason Reitman created something truly special tonight, and we can only hope that future events can live up to this staggeringly sublime confluence of actors and script when he returns again in October.

Warner Bros. and Dark Castle have finally found their leading man for the Albert Hughes action film Motor City. Variety reports that Gerard Butler has been cast in the lead after a bunch of stars were attached and later dropped out of the project.

Dominic Cooper was set to star before he dropping out because of scheduling conflicts, which paved the way for Jake Gyllenhaal to climb about. As quick as Gyllenhaal joined the project, he had to drop out because of similar issues. Once a deal is finalized, Butler would play "a felon who, after being released from prison, begins tracking down the men who framed him." He would star opposite Amber Heard and Gary Oldman. The film was scripted by Chad St. John and produced by Joel Silver.

Butler will next be seen in Playing the Field, and will then be in another action pic called Olympus.Butler has not been in anything really worth watching since 300, but this may change with Motor City. Do you think that this will be a great action film for Butler?

Marvel Closing in on Director for CAPTAIN AMERICA 2

$
0
0

After The Avengers hits theaters in May the story of the characters will continue with Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and of course Captain America 2. According to a recent report from Vulture, Marvel Studios has cut down a list of ten possible directors to only three, those three directors includes....

Writer and director of The Adjustment Bureau George Nolfi, F. Gary Gray who directed The Italian Job, and then there's Anthony and Joseph Russo who are best known for their work on the TV series Community. it's an odd choice, but OK, I can role with it. Marvel's been very smart on who they bring in to direct their films, so I think we can trust their choice. My only issue is why they aren't bringing Joe Johnston back to direct the sequel, because he did a hell of an awesome job bringing Captain America to life! I absolutely loved what he did with it.

It's hard for me to be excited about any of these directors on the list because the two film directors have only made mediocre films, including the Russo's who not only do TV stuff but have directed the film You, Me and Dupree. The inside source that revealed this information told the site the following,

Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios’ president of production] is a ‘vibe guy,' He likes to see if he gets along with people before he’ll decide about spending the next two years with them. And apparently, they hit it off with Kevin in the room.

The studio will meet with the directors again next month. I imagine to discuss ideas and what their vision for the sequel might be. Which of the directors on the list would you prefer to take on the sequel to Captain America?

The script for the film was written by Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely, and according to a previous interview with them the story may end up revisiting the character’s past. They wanted to make sure that the film’s sequel features some classic war-time action in the 1940’s and some of it take place in the modern day.

We certainly want at least a portion of the '40's, I think. The span of [Captain America: The First Avenger] is about two or three years, and there’s a few times in the film where you jump four months ahead, you jump six months ahead. So we did that with the intention of saying, ‘Okay, there are certainly unseen adventures that Captain America went on in that period that if we want to, we can go back and explore later.

In discussing a movie full of 1940s action, Markus obviously admitted,

It might be doing a disservice not to address the present day Cap, particularly because so much of the comic book run right now is present day Cap – that ‘man out of time’ is the icon. The Captain America that most people know is really from kind of the reboot, when Stan Lee brought him back in '63 and '64, frozen from a block of ice. So his biggest personality trait is that he's this man out of time, and for us, we didn't have the opportunity [to explore that]. This was a guy in the RIGHT time.

TWINS Sequel To Become TRIPLETS

$
0

In 1988, after achieving worldwide fame as the world's greatest action hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger did the unthinkable: star in a major mainstream comedy with Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. The film co-starred Danny DeVito in a story that involved the two of them being genetically-engineered fraternal twin brothers and what happens when they meet for the first time in 35 years. The film was a huge success, making over $200 million dollars. It also began Reitman and Schwarzenegger's trilogy of comedies that were soon followed by Kindergarten Cop and Junior. For years, Universal Pictures has been trying to think up a way to make a sequel, with no development, until now. If you can call it development... They have now decided to make a second film entitled Triplets, involving Schwarzenegger and DeVito finding out they have another brother. Take a wild guess as to who it is. You're wrong.

That's right. Former biggest star in the world, Eddie Murphy. Once, one of the funniest men in Hollywood; now regulated to insipid material like Tower Heist and A Thousand Words (which received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Arguably, both Murphy and Schwarzenegger were at the top of their game in the '80s, but have largely disappeared from popular culture (Schwarzenegger, at least has a reason, what with being the Governor of California and all). They've also had recent illegimate children controversies.

But let's be realistic - this is an awful idea. One of the worst I've ever heard and that includes The Erector Set Movie 3D, Adam Sandler's Candy Land and any project with Justin Bieber attached to it. It's destined for failure. It's almost like living in the Twilight Zone. The only way this would be remotely funny is if it was a bad fake trailer in front of Tropic Thunder. You know some rich fatcat Hollywood executive somewhere thought this was a good idea. Arnold's already made the good decision to reignite his career with an appearance in The Expendables 2, return to a starring role in The Last Stand and re-team with Sylvester Stallone in The Tomb. Danny has made a very successful return to television in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and recently starred in the blockbuster family film Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. With Reitman's last film being No Strings Attached, he's been relegated to the role of producer. Count on Universal to throw in a director-for-hire for this already dead-on-arrival concept.

David Yates is Still Planning his DOCTOR WHO Movie

$
0
0

A few months ago it was reported that Harry Potter director David Yates was planning to develop a big screen adaptation of of the classic sci-fi BBC series Doctor Who. Yates envisions the film as a complete reboot, with a recast Doctor. Shortly after this was announced the shows current showrunner Steven Moffat said that "any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot." I guess that's what Moffat would like to see, but it doesn't look like his vision is going to happen. Yates has once again confirmed after Moffat's statement that he is definitely making his Doctor Who movie, but not for a very long time. Here's what he had to say:

Yes, I'm definitely doing a Doctor Who movie. But I think where everyone got confused was that we're not making it for five years, or six years—it's a very slow development. I've got projects backed up between now and about 2015, and it's something I'm very passionate and excited about.

Stephen's a genius. I love his work, I think he's incredibly clever. I love what he's done with Doctor Who, love his Sherlock Holmes. He's such a gifted man. But this is something that's a very slow burn and I'm hoping to sit down with him at some point and have a chat. It's just something that we've been talking about for a little while.

So it sounds like eventually Yates and Moffat will be on the same page about this movie and star collaborating on it together. I think it's very possible that five or six years down the line the movie could end up being connected to the series. So much can happen between now and then. Yates continues saying

That's all to be discussed. Because it's five or six years from now. It's weird because ... what will the series be like in five or six years? But I'm very excited about it, very excited about that world.

It will be interesting to see what comes out of all this. We will eventually see a Doctor Who movie, then question is who will it be more influenced by, Yates or Moffat? Can you see these two talents getting together and working out the best possible plan for a movie?

Here's a few comments made by Yates in previous interviews talking about his vision for the film:

We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena. The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time.

Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch. We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too.

We're principally looking for a writer, and we'll start with that. Everything has to start with a great script, so that's more important than [casting].

What do you want to see happen with the film adaptation? Do you want it rebooted or do you want it to be in line with the TV series?

THE HUNGER GAMES - Fun Series of Propaganda Posters

The Hunger Games is currently blowing up the box-office, and it will be interesting to see if Wrath of the Titans or Mirror Mirror will knock it off the number one spot. I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was well made. One of my main issues with it was the shaky epileptic cinematography, but other than that I loved it and thought it was a solid adaptation.

In the spirit of fun and entertainment College Humor has created this series of propaganda style poster art for the film. They do a good job of making light of such a brutal hardcore game. One of my favorite quotes in the bunch is "Words are weapons, but weapons are also weapons." Did you like the movie? Are you excited for a sequel?
