THE HOBBIT to get LEGOized!

$

Soon fans of The Lord of The Rings will be able to build together! Variety reports that Warner Bros. Consumer Products has found it’s chosen one in Lego. The studio has given the toymaker rights to create action figures and playsets based on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the two upcoming films based on The Hobbit, with the first film arriving in 2012.

Lego has scored big with this multiyear deal, which gives them access to all of the characters, settings, and stories of The Lord of the Rings universe. The first sets will be LOTR, and are set to arrive this June. There will also be various other sets planned in conjunction with the Dec. 14 theatrical release of An Unexpected Journey.

Here is what Warner Bros. VP Karen McTier had to say in a statement:
"Only Lego, with their expertise in the construction category, is capable of doing justice to the incredibly imaginative environments depicted in the world of 'The Lord of the Rings' and the two films based on 'The Hobbit. These films give life to amazing worlds and characters and we are thrilled to bring fans these products that deliver an imaginative play experience befitting of these beloved properties."
This deal comes as no surprise since Warner Bros. has a long-standing relationship with Lego. The toymaker has produced sets for the Harry Potter, Batman, and Speed Racer, and is currently working on sets for the entire DC Comics library. Lego has also done sets for Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story and Cars. Harry Potter and Star Wars sets helped Lego rake in over $1 billion in sales in the U.S. for the first time in 2010, and it looks as though it will happen again in 2011.

Lego and Warner Bros. are scheduled to release their DC toys next year, the same time Lego will also release its Marvel line for Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man and Disney's The Avengers.

Here is what Lego had to say about the partnership:
"Our collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products has delivered numerous worldwide successes in the construction toy aisle, introducing us to loyal audiences who love great stories, strong characters and the toys that they inspire. It's particularly exciting to now be able to create sets based on the fantasy worlds and characters from 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy and 'The Hobbit,' not only because we know they will foster collectability and creative play, but also because these are two properties that our fans have been asking us to create for years."
I have always enjoyed looking at the Lego creations that people make. These sets sound perfect for fans of Lego and The Lord of the Rings alike. What are your thoughts on this news? Are you looking forward to buying a set?

Trailer for SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt

Here is the first trailer for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen directed by Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape). The film stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Amr Waked and Tom Mison. The movie looks as quirky as its title. The story follows Dr. Alfred Jones, a fisheries scientist in Great Britain, who is called upon to find a way to introduce salmon into the desert in Yemen.

Here is a description:

A visionary sheik has a big dream -- to bring salmon fishing to the desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn his dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain's leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister's overzealous press secretary latches on for its potential as a 'good will' story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

There seems to be a nice blend of interesting characters and great dialogue in this comedy. Check out the trailer below for yourself and share your thoughts:

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen opens in theaters on March 12.

ENDER'S GAME - Brendan Meyer cast as Stilson

The casting for Ender's Game is on a role, and it's just been reported that 17-year old canadian actor Brendan Meyer will be taking on the role of Stilson in the film. Stilson is a classmate of Ender's who taunted him during ground school in the story. I'm not really that familiar with Meyer, but he is on the Disney XD show Mr. Young, which I have never watched. He joins the previously cast Asa Butterfield as Ender, Hailee Steinfeld as Petra, Ben Kingsley as Mazer, and maybe Harrison Ford as Colonel Hyrum Graff.

Here's some Spoiler filled details on who this character is and his relationship with Ender:

Stilson was a classmate of Ender's when Ender was still enrolled in Ground School. He and his gang frequently taunted and assaulted Ender. On the day that Ender had his monitor removed, Stilson and his gang surrounded Ender after school. Ender, seeing that he could not escape the situation without violence, kicked Stilson in the breast bone and knocked him to the ground. To make his victory complete and ensure that neither Stilson nor any of his gang would ever come after him again, he then kicked Stilson several times in the ribs and face. Stilson subsequently died from his injuries (probably from a ruptured lung, as Ender's kick to the breastbone may well have broken his xiphisternum). Ender was not informed of his death until many years later.

The film is being directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and is based on the science fiction novel series by Orson Scott Card. What are your thoughts on Meyer taking on the role of Stilson

Here is an official description of the story:

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

Disney has unleashed two new TV spots with bit of new footage for their new sci-fi adventure John Carter, which as you know is based on the classic novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The film was directed by Pixar animation director Andrew Stanton who is a huge fan of the book series, and it stars Taylor KitschLynn Collins and Willem Dafoe. I'm really hoping that this movie ends up being good. I liked the last full trailer that was released, which showed off some pretty beautiful shots.

Here's the Synopsis:

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

The film hits theaters on March 9th 2012! Is this one you're looking forward to seeing?

A new trailer has been released for the ultimate military recruitment tool. This trailer is for the feature film Act of Valor, which was created by and stars a team of actual badass Navy SEALs. I have a ton of respect for the military and what they do, and I'm excited to see this movie. It looks really entertaining.

The movie is described as “a hybrid feature film based on the SEAL ethos that highlights both naval special warfare capability and fleet interaction.” Co-director McCoy said “I found the SEALs fascinating. People never know exactly how far you can push yourself, and the SEALs are a direct representation of that.”

The new film was directed by ex-stuntmen and documentary filmmakers/commercial directors Mike “Mouse” McCoy (Dust to Glory) and Scott Waugh (Step Into Liquid) and written by Kurt Johnstad (300). It stars Alex VeadovRoselyn Sanchez and Nestor Serrano.

Here's the synopsis:

An unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs in a powerful story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. Inspired by true events, the film combines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the minute battlefield technology and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure. Act of Valor takes audiences deep into the secretive world of the most elite, highly trained group of warriors in the modern world. When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly terrorist plot against the U.S., a team of SEALs is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt. As the valiant men of Bandito Platoon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of American civilians, they must balance their commitment to country, team and their families back home. Each time they accomplish their mission, a new piece of intelligence reveals another shocking twist to the deadly terror plot, which stretches from Chechnya to the Philippinesand from Ukraine to Somalia. The widening operation sends the SEALs across the globe as they track the terrorist ring to the U.S.-Mexico border, where they engage in an epic firefight with an outcome that has potentially unimaginable consequences for the future of America.

The movie comes out on February 17th 2011. Watch the trailer below and tell us what you thnk!

Here is the first teaser trailer for Will Ferrell's upcoming Spanish language comedy, Casa De Mi Padre. The film is directed by Matt Piedmont (SNL) and stars Ferrell, Diego Luna, Genesis Rodriguez, and Gael Garcia Bernal. This movie looks like it will be one of the most unique comedies I have ever seen.

Synopsis:

Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancee, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father's debts. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).

Casa De Mi Padre arrives in theaters on March 16.

Clive Owen Offered the Villain Role in OLDBOY Remake

According to a recent report Clive Owen has been offered the role of the villain in Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy. This is a role that Christian Bale flirted with at one point, then Colin Firth was offered the part, but ended up not taking it. That left it wide open for another actor to sink his teeth into, and I'm excited to tell you that Clive Owen could end up taking on the role, which would be great!

Owen has been offered the part, but there's no word yet on if he is taking it or not. Chances are he'll take it. He and Lee have worked together in the past on a great little heist film called The Inside Man. Owen is a fantastic actor who's got the sophisticated menacing intensity to pull off a crazy ass character like this. It will also be great to see him work with Josh Brolin who is attached to play the lead role.

There's still no official word on if Rooney Mara will be joining the cast, but if she does it would round out a pretty awesome cast for this movie.

What do you all think about Owen possibly playing the villain in Oldboy?

Mia Wasikowska offered lead in OLDBOY remake

Mia Wasikowska is continuing her relationship with director Park Chan-Wook. Well, kinda. Twitch is reporting that the Jane Eyre actress may be moving from Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook's English language debut Stoker to Spike Lee's remake of the genre classic. Wasikowska has reportedly been offered the lead role of Marie, which had initially been offered to Rooney Mara.

If cast, she will star opposite Josh Brolin who plays “a man imprisoned against his will and with no explanation for years before he is released and sets out to find and take revenge on his captor.” Earlier tonight we reported that Clive Owen has been offered the role of the villain.

I never really noticed until now that Wasikowska looks a lot like Mara in terms of body, size and style, so her casting makes sense from that perspective. The casting news on this film continues to get better and better. I am still not sold on Brolin playing the lead, but only time will tell.

What are your thoughts on the cast of this remake so far?

Review: Jason Reitman's Live Read of THE PRINCESS BRIDE

$
0
0

Director Jason Reitman traveled across Los Angeles from the premiere of his new film Young Adult Thursday night to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to host the third of his Live Read series. Each show features a different cast of actors playing roles popularized in the featured movies: for his first event, he chose The Breakfast Club, with Jennifer Garner, Aaron Paul, and more in the leads. His second, the Billy Wilder classic The Apartment, starred Natalie Portman and Steve Carell. For The Princess Bride, Reitman brought together his largest cast yet - and the whole evening was pretty damn magical.

Paul Rudd read the part of Westley, and Mindy Kaling (Kelly from "The Office") played Buttercup. Rudd was fantastic, his natural charm a perfect fit with Westley's droll humor and witty retorts. Kaling was regal and composed as the princess, taking a cue from original Buttercup Robin Wright by reading every line with a straight face. (During the final moments of the reading, the kiss to end all kisses between Westley and Buttercup, Rudd and Kaling gave each other the sloppiest kiss I've ever seen, with Rudd going so far as to lick Kaling's face for a huge laugh. It's fair to say they were committed to their roles.) Collette Wolfe voiced every other female part, pairing wonderfully with Kevin Pollak as he did his best Billy Crystal impression in the role of Miracle Max. Nick Kroll ("The League") brought the house down as Count Rugan, imbuing the evil six-fingered man with a foppish quality that had even his fellow cast members cracking up. Goran Visjnic ("Pan Am," a ton of other things) played the role of Inigo Montoya with a smoldering intensity, and Bill "Marshall's Dad on How I Met Your Mother" Fagerbakke added a goofy presence as Fezzik, Andre the Giant's most popular film character. For me, the best fit of any character was Patton Oswalt as Vizzini, bringing the outrage found in much of his own comedy to one of my favorite villainous roles in film history. Rob Reiner, the director of The Princess Bride film, played the Grandfather, and Fred Savage reprised his role as the Grandson, donning an old Chicago Bears jersey as the crowd roared its approval. Announcing the cast as they came out, Jason Reitman saved one of the best for last, warning, "This one's gonna f*ck with your heads, guys": Cary Elwes, the original Westley, read the part of Prince Humperdinck.

An event like this depends heavily on the audience; if you're with a crowd of people who love the property in question, that makes all the difference in the world. This audience clearly loved The Princess Bride, laughing and clapping in all the right places and giving huge applause at all of the most classic lines. In the epic swordfight sequence between Inigo and the Man in Black, Patton Oswalt produced two spoons and clinked them repeatedly, hilariously mimicking the noise of an actual fight as Reitman read the stage directions aloud to the crowd.

Screenshots from the film were presented on a large screen above the actors on stage, providing the audience with a visual of the locations for each scene. This entire event served to highlight the brilliance of William Goldman's script, and as Reitman reminded us before the reading began, Goldman himself once said that he only loved two projects he'd ever worked on: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Princess Bride. The script is whimsical and full of life, a fantastic work of art from one of the best storytellers in the business. That all the emotion and humor still work here in this stripped down version of the story is a testament to Goldman's work on the screenplay, and a perfect example of why Reitman started this series to begin with: not only to breathe new life into old classics, but also to remind us of why they're classics in the first place. I can't wait to see what he does next.

Eva Green May Play Artemisia in 300 Prequel

$

A male lead has yet to be chosen, but it looks like the 300 prequel has found its female lead. THR reports that Eva Green is in talks to play Artemisia in the movie from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Noam Murro (Smart People) is directing the film currently titled 300: Battle of Artemisia. Mark Canton, Gianni Nunnari, Bernie Goldman, Zack Snyder, and Deborah Snyder are producing the film, slated to start filming in early 2012.

The new film follows the Persian king-turned-god Xerxes as he leads an army against Greek forces, who have little training but are under the guidance of a general named Themistokles. The prequel has a giant battle sequence planned that is supposed to be occurring at the same time as the fighting in 2006’s 300 takes place. Green would play “a ruthless, gold-covered goddess who persuades Xerxes to amass his army and helps lead them into battle.”

Green starred as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale and appeared in The Golden Compass. She just finished shooting Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows starring Johnny Depp for Warner Bros. I am looking forward to seeing who the male lead will be before I get excited about the prequel. I do like Green, so this is good news.

What are your thoughts on this casting news?

Focus Features Confirms 2012 Release Dates for BEING FLYNN, MOONRISE KINGDOM and more

$

Focus Features confirmed release dates in 2012 for three films: Paul Weitz’s Being Flynn, Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Keep reading for all of the details.

Here is the official press release:

Being Flynn is the new dramatic feature from writer/director Paul Weitz (About a Boy). Adapted from Nick Flynn's 2004 memoir "Another Bulls—t Night in Suck City," the movie explores bonds both unbreakable and fragile between parent and child. Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood) portrays Nick Flynn, a young writer seeking to define himself. He misses his late mother, Jody (Julianne Moore), and her loving nature. But his father, Jonathan, is not even a memory, as Nick has not seen the man in 18 years. Jonathan Flynn (Robert De Niro) has long defined himself as a great writer, "a master storyteller." Suddenly facing eviction from his apartment, Jonathan impulsively reaches out to Nick and the two come face-to-face. Being Flynn will open in select cities on Friday, March 2nd.

Steve Carell and Keira Knightley star in the comedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which marks the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist). Set in a too-near future, the movie explores what people will do when humanity's last days are at hand. As the respective journeys of Dodge (Carell) and Penny (Knightley) converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world's – brighten. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World will open in theaters nationally on Friday, April 20th.

Moonrise Kingdom is the new feature from Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore). Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, the film follows a young boy and girl (newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) falling in love. When they are moved to run away together, various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down – which might not be such a bad thing. Bruce Willis plays the town sheriff; Edward Norton is cast as a camp leader; and Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl's parents. Also in the cast are Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. The original screenplay is by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola (The Darjeeling Limited). Moonrise Kingdom will open in select cities on Friday, May 25th.

In addition to the three newly dated films, current and upcoming Focus Features releases include writer/director Dee Rees' contemporary drama Pariah, which world-premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival; Sam Fell and Chris Butler's ParaNorman, the new 3D stop-motion comedy thriller from animation company LAIKA, which was previously announced for a 2012 nationwide domestic release on August 17th; the historical tale Hyde Park on Hudson, directed by Roger Michell and starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney; Joe Wright's epic romance Anna Karenina, adapted from Leo Tolstoy's classic novel by Tom Stoppard and starring Keira Knightley, Jude Law, and Aaron Johnson; and Tomas Alfredson's thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy.
