In this fan art from a veterinarian/artist who calls himself Crim, Betty Ross soothes the Hulk with the power of her love. I guess Tony Stark wasn’t available.

Alex Kurtzman's THE MUMMY to Launch Cinematic Monster Universe

0
0

Alex Kurtzman was recently announced as the director of The Mummy reboot, which will be the first in a Universal Pictures cinematic monster universe, in the same way Iron Man launched the Marvel cinematic universe. Kurtzman is a brilliant choice to direct and has been involved with lots of acclaimed TV and movies, notably Star Trek, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek Into Darkness, Fringe, Sleepy Hollow, and Alias. His knack for great episodic and cinematic storytelling is exactly what's needed for the movie that will kickstart a whole universe of films.

Universal is also pushing its release date back to June 26, 2016. My guess is that Universal and Kurtzman want enough time to properly develop the movie and map out the cinematic universe.

I've heard rumors that Universal Pictures cinematic monster universe will be set in modern day, a rumor I hope is not true. Maybe it's my limited vision for these characters, but I've always seen them as period movies.

New Joss Whedon Biography Gives Details on the Creation of FIREFLY

0
0

Amy Pascale’s biography of Joss Whedon hits shelves today, and with it comes new insight into our Geek Overlord. We’ve already seen Tom Hiddleston’s love letter to Whedon, which came from the book, now io9 has an except of Chapter 17, about the creation of Firefly. It goes in depth about his inspiration for the show, casting, writing Chinese slang, and why he named the show after the ship. He even throws shade at Doctor Who. You should probably read the whole thing (Especially because I’m not going spoil the reason he named the show Firefly. Its reveal is too good in the context of the excerpt.), but here are a few highlights.

Whedon wanted the series to be about “how politics affect people personally. And the personal politics are the only politics that really interest me. I'm not going to make this big, didactic polemic—I'm just going to say, 'When there are shifts in a planet, those tiny little guys are the ones who are affected. So let's hang out with them—not the Federation heads or the Jedi Council.'"

There are nine characters because the show is strongly modeled after John Ford's classic western, Stagecoach. The book contains a literary analysis of the similarities by professor Fred Erisman, plus discussion about the show’s philosophical underpinnings.

Whedon dropped out of talks to direct Iron Man so that he could focus on Firefly.

Fox objected to Zoe and Wash’s marriage. They said a pick up was dependent on them not being in a stable relationship. Whedon threatened to walk. “And I said, 'Then don't pick up the show, because in my show, these people are married. And it's important to the show.'"

Neal Patrick Harris was in contention for the role of Simon Tam, which ultimately went to Sean Maher.

Adam Baldwin calls Whedon a better director of actors than Stanley Kubrik. “I worked for Stanley Kubrick—Stanley was not as good a communicator with actors as Joss is. Stanley would just have you do it again and yell at you that you were lame and bad and need to be a better actor, whereas Joss would say, 'Well, try this' or 'Try that,' and he would care. Being a good actor, he was able to give all of us guidance toward his vision of how the scene would play. And that was a huge, huge benefit."

And finally, the Doctor Who shade: "People were always talking to me about [Blake's] 7, Red Dwarf, even Doctor Who, and I just never watched them. I watched one episode of Doctor Who and I was like, 'Did they film that in my basement?' because it looked cheesy."

Disney Princesses Crossplay Their Princes

Belle dresses as the Beast — Beauty and the Beast

Belle dresses as the Beast — Beauty and the Beast

Deviant artist godohelp calls herself “a huge fan of Disney’s human shippings.” (So she doesn’t ship Dumbo and the crows, I guess.) She draws what she loves, and what she loves are Disney princesses and their boyfriends. This economical take on her favorite ships features Disney princesses wearing their prince’s clothes. It’s pretty great. Someone should cosplay these. Or just wear them as regular clothes, because they look amazing.

Check out more her work here. Thanks to GeekxGirls.

STONEHEARST ASYLUM Trailer - Psychological Thriller with an All-Star Cast

0
0

Here’s the first trailer for the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired psychological thriller Stonehearst Asylum, which was previously titled Eliza Graves. As FirstShowing points out, this looks discouragingly similar to Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island. Both are period dramas set at an insane asylum where all isn’t as it appears, and both star Ben Kingsley in seemingly similar roles. In Stonehearst Asylum, Jim Sturgess stars as a Harvard Medical School graduate who takes a job at a mental institution, unaware the it has been taken over by its patients.

So with all the similarities to Scorsese’s semi-recent foray into horror, and Stonehearst Asylum playing what may or may not be an open hand in the poster and trailer (though I'd suspect some twists, hopefully), what does this film have going for it? It has an all-star cast and a director back in his element. Along with Sturgess and Kingsley, the movie also stars Michael Caine, Kate Beckinsale, Brendan Gleeson, David Thewlis, and Jason Flemyng, and it was directed by Brad Anderson, the man behind films like The Machinist and Session 9. Anderson can pull off dark atmospheric thrillers in his sleep. I don’t know if this film aims to get under your skin like his previous movies did, but if there’s even a small chance of it, this should we worth checking out.

The film will be released in select theaters and on VOD starting on October 24th, 2014.

DOCTOR WHO and SHERLOCK Collide in WHOLOCK: THE MUSICAL

Like the cookie butter chocolate bar, this is a case of why hasn’t anyone thought if this before?* In "Wholock: the Musical," the Doctor is looking for a new companion, and Sherlock is looking for a new assistant. They might just be a match made in Steven Moffat heaven. In this short video from youtubers AVbyte, the two heroes argue over who should have top billing in their team-up.

I would totally watch a 90-minute version of this, because it raises so many questions. Will Sherlock’s deductive powers translate to alien cultures? Will the Doctor pine for him like he did for Rose? How would Sherlock deal with Daleks? How long before the Doctor gets sick of him and dumps him somewhere in deep space? Would they have the greatest petty bickering of all time? Sweet hell, I would like to see a crossover episode.

*If you have thought of this before, congratuwelldone, but please don’t send me your Wholock slashfic.

Hat tip: GeekAreSexy. Check out more of AVbyte's pop culture musicals here.

In case you missed it, also be sure to check out this impressive fan-made Sherlock and Doctor Who crossover that uses actual footage from both series.

DRAGON BALL Z — Fan Film Trailer is Dark and Ominous

Here's the first trailer for the fan film Dragon Ball Z - The Fall of Men, which was sent to us by director Yohan Faure. The production values are high and the overall tone is dark and ominous. If the full film is as good as the teaser, it will be leaps and bounds above the official movie. I've included a couple making-of videos and a concept video. Make sure to turn on captions as the extra videos are in French.

Chris Pratt Squinches in JURASSIC WORLD Photo

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow tweeted a photo of Chris Pratt with the message, "See you next summer, Star-Lord. #GOTG." Not much to analyze here other than the fact that Pratt is a master eye squincher. "What is eye squinching?" you ask. Well, in short, it makes you look like a badass, and no, it's not squinting. I've included a video by photographer Peter Hurley that teaches you how to look like a badass too.

Mario Travels Through Real-Life Tokyo

I think the world is ready for some healing. We’re ready to forgive and forget… about that awful Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. We’re past the 20 year mark, and there have been some great Mario-themed fan films recently. A few months ago we posted a CG/live-action fan-made short that our readers seemed to love (it also now has over 1 million hits on YouTube). Here’s another great fan film that places a CG Mario in the real world. This doesn’t have the same hilariously destructive outcome as the other film, but the CG in this is much better. The video is a fan trailer by Japan-based visual effects artist Dean Wright that features Mario rushing through Tokyo to get to the Super Smash Bros. tournament.

From the looks of the trailer released yesterday, the new SpongeBob Squarepants movie is perhaps the first promising looking CG/live-action hybrid film. I don’t know what it is about that extra dimension, but most other 3D hybrid films have yet to live up to their 2D ancestors, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Space Jam. Maybe there's a writing team out there who could find the right balance and scenario, which the SpongeBob movie seems to have done, for a CG Mario to be in the real world. But, if we’re looking for a gritty live-action take on the plumber, Evan Daugherty’s Four Players series gave us a fantastic taste of what that could be like.

Corey Stoll Talks Yellowjacket Battle Suit in ANT-MAN

At Comic-Con 2014 the team at Nerd Repository was able to interview Cory Stoll, who will play Darren Cross, aka Yellowjacket, in Ant-Man. Stoll talks about Yellowjacket's battle suit and how the design process is progressing.

Stoll on his suit:

“I’ve had several costume fittings and it’s looking amazing. It’s still in flux, they’re still figuring out exactly how it’s going to look, but it’s going to be awesome… In this story Darren Cross, who was in the comic books but was not Yellowjacket in the comic books, he has a suit that is sort of the next generation of Ant-Man’s suit. It can do everything that Ant-Man can do, but more. It’s more badass, more militaristic, sleeker… sort of like if Apple had designed a battle suit.”

If you're more of a watcher than a reader, I've included the video of the interview. Ant-Man will breach the box office on July 17, 2015 (USA).

Captain Spider-Man Cosplay

What if instead of Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, it was Peter Parker who took up the mantle of Captain America? It would be Captain Spider-Man. This cosplay is worn and created by Dhareza Cosplayza, with assistance by Becka Noel. Dhareza's suit design is a brilliant concept that's well executed. Whats crazy is that this is his first sewing project, and it was done in only 4 days. A shield is currently under construction.

Dhareza on the suit - Via Reddit:

Template was drawn by hand in photoshop and sent to Fabric On Demand to get printed on lycra. I sewed the entire suit in 4 days. Eyes are made of Worbla and the splatter mesh is attached to the face shell via magnets.

I can't wait to see the full suit and shield.

10 Superhero Damsels Worth the Distress

No matter what his powers are, the most important thing a superhero can have is the love of a good woman. He needs to be able set all the world-saving and crime fighting aside and enjoy himself once in a while, and a loving partner can be essential to that. Plus, imperiling a hero’s love interest is an easy shortcut to narrative tension. Not all girlfriends are created equal, though. A good superhero girlfriend is supportive, of course, but also tough and smart, as they have to deal with a lot, like villains kidnapping them all the time. So who makes the cut?

GeekTyrant partnered with Green Label to bring you a list of the 10 coolest superhero girlfriends. We explore what makes a girlfriend great and give you the best versions of the characters and versions you might want to avoid. Here are...

New DOCTOR WHO Photos, News, and EW Cover

The premiere of Doctor Who Season 8 is so close I can taste it. If you are not excited to see what Peter Capaldi brings to the show, you should probably see a medical doctor because you are most likely dead inside. Or you could have been turned into a Cyberman. With the premiere looming, the Doctor's PR machine is in overdrive. After months of silence, we’ve seen a couple of interviews this week, and now the Doctor is on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, we have photos from the first episode, and BBC America has announced a series of television events leading up to its debut.

The stills reveal that the first episode takes the Doctor and Clara back to Victorian England to see Vastra (and, presumably, Jenny and Strax). The feature length episode is called “Deep Breath” and was written by Steven Moffat. You will have a chance to see it on the big screen, as BBC America has once again partnered with Fathom Events to show it in theaters with 15 minutes of additional content.

On top of that, BBC America will air several Doctor Who specials, starting with "Doctor Who: The Companion" on August 16 and launching the “Doctor Who Takeover Week” on August 18. Starting on August 6, fans can vote for their favorite episodes, which will air in a Doctor Who marathon on August 24. Chris Hardwick will bookend the premiere with Doctor Who Pre- and Post-Shows.

Season 8 lands somewhere in time and space at 8 pm on August 23. If I had a TARDIS I would go there now.

Wolverine Vs. Hulk by Stjepan Sejic

We’ve already seen Hulk take on Thor in The Avengers, and we know he’ll be going up against Iron Man and his Hulkbuster armor in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But with the rights to the X-Men firmly at FOX, it’ll be a long time before we see the most famous Hulk battle brought to life on the big-screen. Fans have been hungry for a Hulk Vs. Wolverine showdown for long time. The surprisingly graphic animated version that was released back in 2009 helped curb those hunger pangs, but this great piece by Stjepan Sejic will have you jonesing to see these two Marvel characters go toe-to-toe once again.

We’ve featured numerous pieces of Stjepan’s art over the years, and he always wows us with his color work and composition. Be sure to check out more of his work here.

AGENT CARTER — Video Interview with Hayley Atwell and Show Creators

IGN had an opportunity to interview Agent Carter actress Hayley Atwell and the creative team behind the show. The first season has been designed to be an 8-hour movie or single narrative divided into 8 episodes. While the show is somehow connected to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it takes place before the organization of the espionage agency. The creation of S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t be shown until Season 2 at the soonest. There are so many new and cool details revealed in the video interview.

Agent Carter will premiere on ABC in January 2015, while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on hiatus.

5 Geeky Things We Want This Week, Batman's 75th Anniversary Edition

0
0

This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the introduction of Batman in Detective Comics #27. The World's Greatest Detective still manages to thrill, even after all these years and is so beloved that Batfleck inspired jeers the world over. Here's some Batman stuff to mark the time

Sodium Batman Tshirt
This periodic table-like design has 16 sodiums and one Batman. Since the symbol for sodium is Na, it says, “NaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNaNa, BATMAN!” That the mass of Batman is 19.39 is a nice nod to the year he was created. [Think Geek]

Batman Year One
Lieutenant James Gordon is new to Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne is newly returned. Things are not good, but maybe they can make a difference. Based on the arc by Frank Miller, this animated movie is an interesting take on the origin of Batman’s relationship with his favorite cop. [Amazon]

Justice League Poster Set
Batman on his own is great. Batman with his super powered friends is even better. The Dark Knight won’t get lonely with this set of Justice League posters on your walls. [Etsy]

Sixth Scale Hot Toys 1960s Batman
Adam West’s Caped-Crusader was the first superhero I ever saw, and his light-hearted, kind of campy take on the character is a refreshing palate cleanser for all the dark, gritty depictions of recent years. Also, this figure comes with a can of Shark repellant, and that is gold. [Sideshow Collectibles]

Batman Fabrikations Plush Figure
Get this for your kid. Maybe if he has his own Batman he’ll leave your Sixth Scale Hot Toys 1960s Batman alone. [Entertainment Earth]

New Posters for David Fincher's GONE GIRL Are Moody and Atmospheric

0
0

I am interested to see what David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s mega bestseller Gone Girl looks like, and I am especially curious to see if he changes the ending. Anyway, here are a couple of posters for the whodunit, and they are moody and atmospheric. Ben Affleck’s Nick Dunne takes center stage as news chyron proclaims that the search for his missing wife (Rosamund Pike) continues. With each clue, it looks more and more like he’s responsible for her disappearance, but is he really?

The supporting cast includes Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, and Patrick Fugit, which is an odd assemblage, but I am super happy to see Fugit in such a big movie, because nostalgia.

The mystery will be solved when the movie opens on October 3, but if you want to see more haunting promotional materials, check out FindingAmazingAmy.com.

Thanks to IndieWire for the tip.

"Sexy" Japanese Men Dance J-Pop Style To LOVE LIVE!

0
0

This is just the right amount of strange for your Friday. These "sexy" Japanese guys dance to the theme of the anime Bokura wa Ima no Naka or Love Live! Being the well seasoned geek that you are, I'm sure you're well aware of the J-Pop/K-Pop format of shooting dance videos, and will note that the style is true to form! For those who may not be in the know on the Japanese Pop and Korean Pop scene, basically the other dance videos look like this...

The J-pop and K-pop scenes are very much similar to the American scene, but with some differences. These dances are integral to the new songs that are released. The dances are synced up with the music, and carefully choreographed to ensure the moves aren't too difficult for fans of the music to replicate. It sounds pretty wild to me, but I remember trying to emulate Justin Timberlake and his dances back in the day, so I guess it's not that crazy.

Fashion is also a big part of the process. The style of clothes, makeup, and hair products these stars use is well documented and mimicked by girls in the Asian nations. Essentially they are walking advertisements. Then again, the same could be said for our pop stars. Hmm...the things you learn when you look at other cultures.

SLEEPING BEAUTY Is a Sleeping Menace

The artist who made this, Sarah White, goes by the name Shira-chan on Deviant Art. She seems pretty twisted. We love her. Her take on Sleeping Beauty is darker and more fun than Maleficent was. This is why you don’t go around kissing random sleeping princesses, Prince. Serves you right. Let this be a lesson to all you guys out there creeping on sleeping ladies. One day you’ll pay the price.

Official Marvel Phase 1 & 2 Recap with Footage of Josh Brolin as Thanos

0
0

The video we posted yesterday of all the Easter Eggs in Marvel movies was a nice cerebral look at the groundwork that the studio has laid for their cinematic universe so far. But if you’re looking for a more visceral, adrenaline-fueled onslaught of visuals that will leave you with goosebumps, then this official video the studio just released will do just that. The video takes us through all 10 of the films in Phase 1 & 2 so far, from the first Iron Man to Guardians of the Galaxy. There is even a quick look at Josh Brolin as Thanos in that film, and a quick tease of Ultron, who will appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the final chapter of Phase 2 coming out next May.

Guardians of the Galaxy opened in theaters today, and if you haven’t seen it already (we highly recommend that you do), this is just the thing to get you primed and ready. Marvel previously screened this footage before their panel at Comic-Con last weekend. In case you missed it, you can watch the Ant-Man panel and read a description of the test footage by clicking here. To watch the Age of Ultron panel, click here. To read a description of the footage, click here.
