Promising New Trailer for THE MAZE RUNNER, Plus 10 New Posters

Yahoo posted a new trailer for the upcoming dystopian (are we calling it dystopian?) sci-fi thriller The Maze Runner. It is yet another movie based on a popular YA book trilogy in which a teenage hero defies some kind of authority and survives unbeatable odds, but I actually think this one looks good. It has a Lord of the Flies kind of feel with a strong mystery element, which is a promising start, and I like the deep south, sun-bleached aesthetic. We’ve seen a couple trailers for the movie already, but the new trailer shows a bit more of the “grievers” — strange robots that populate the maze. The studio has also released nine new posters for the film, and they are actually pretty great. I am increasingly convinced that this is a movie I want to see.

When Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. Based on the best-selling novel by James Dashner.

The Maze Runner is directed by Wes Ball and also stars Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, Ki Hong Lee, Aml Ameen, and Patricia Clarkson. It finds its way to U.S. theaters on September 19.

Black Milk's Princesses and Villains Collection

At GeekTyrant we love Disney princesses, and we love Black Milk clothing. (Pretty much the coolest thing I’ve ever seen was a leggy brunette wearing these leggings with a silk tunic and sandals. It was so chic.) So when we heard about Black Milk’s new Princesses and Villains collection, we were excited. And while it’s a little bit hit or miss (this swimsuit baffles me) and some of the pieces are a little bit young (I like this suit but maybe a toddler should wear it), there are some great pieces lurking in the collection. Here are a few of our favorites.

We’re All Mad Here Leggings
These Cheshire Cat printed leggings are insane in all the best ways. Bright, fun, and fittingly psychedelic, these are a perfect way to step up your I-overslept-and-threw-on-these-leggings game.

Mulan Skater Skirt
There’s a reason this is currently sold out in most sizes, and that is because it is terrific. It’s simple and subtle and pays tribute to the most badass Disney heroine.

The Black Mamba Catsuit
I’m not totally sure what this catsuit has to do with Disney anything, except that I guess every villain needs a slinky black outfit. However, this is amazing, and in spite of the fact that I actively campaign against a) jumpsuits and b) velvet clothing, it still made its way into my shopping cart.

Down the Rabbit Hole Pencil Skirt
This print has an ombre effect that is out of this world. Or under it (Get it? That was a pun). Either way, it is great.

Tale As Old As Time Dress
The stained glass print on this body con dress is sure to get you lots of attention. You’ll be the “Belle” of the ball in this one! I’ll be here all week, don’t forget to tip your waitress.

DOCTOR WHO — Peter Capaldi's Darker, More Alien Doctor

Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman talk about the new take on Doctor Who in a new interview with Empire. We recently posted an interview about how Capaldi is not only a fan, but a Doctor Who trivia master; it's a must read.

Capaldi on the his Doctor:

"He's more alien than he's been for a while. He doesn't quite understand human beings or really care very much about their approval."

Coleman on the new Doctor:

"With Matt's Doctor [Clara] felt quite safe, really. She knew she'd be caught if she was in danger, but this guy is a lot less human-friendly and a lot less patient. He's more removed and inaccessible. You can't quite access him in the same way."

Capaldi on his fandom:

"Doctor Who was a part of being a kid in the '60s with The Beatles and Sunday Night At The London Palladium and smog and bronchitis and all that stuff, I think it's part of my DNA."

To quote The Pointer Sisters, "I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it." This new season and Doctor are going in new and old directions. It's an oxymoronic dichotomy that showrunner Steven Moffat does best.

Doctor Who season 8 premiers Saturday, August 23 at 8 p.m., on BBC America.

Realistic Pokémon ReVamp Art Series

A couple weeks ago, we compiled a list of 10 Fictional Objects We Wish Were Real. Most of the entries on that list had close real-world equivalents, but nothing currently exists that is anything close to the PokéBall, a pocket-sized device capable of storing any-sized living organism by turning it into energy. While we dream of currently unattainable Pokémon technology, we can at least further imagine what more realistic versions of those creatures themselves would look like thanks to this series by artist Gavin Mackey. The ongoing gallery is called “Pokémon ReVamp,” and we’ve included some of our favorite pieces above and below.

Be sure to check out the rest of the gallery here.

I am vengeance, I am the night, I am... sweet short shorts!

Cartoonist Stjepan Šejić created a heat-weary Batman wearing short shorts and a sleeveless muscle shirt. I'll admit that it's been so hot where I live this summer that I've been rocking shorts nearly 24/7, but... I'm not a vigilante crime fighter. Then again, Batman's outfit doesn't look so ridiculous when you realize Robin is wearing nearly the same thing.

Peyton Reed Calls Unfinished ANT-MAN Script "Terrific"

$

Peyton Reed is in an unenviable position. He is set to direct Ant-Man, a movie that is already two months behind schedule, doesn’t have a finished script, was originally the brain-child of a beloved geek director, and has some fans actively rooting for it to fail. He definitely has an uphill climb. At the same time, he starts production on a Marvel movie in about three weeks, so he has to be at least a little stoked.

In an interview on the press line at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, Reed gave reporters an update on where the project stands. “We’ve been prepping like crazy,” he said. They are doing costume tests and hair and makeup tests and still trying to finish that script. “We’re still making some script changes, but the script is terrific.” He went on to explain what Adam McKay (who reportedly refused the director’s chair but agreed to write the screenplay) is bringing to the project. “Adam McKay is still working on the script right now, and he’s brought a lot to the script. I mean, we all know Adam, in my mind, as a comedic genius, and I’ve known Adam since the Upright Citizens Brigade days that I did in the late nineties, but Adam is also an insane comics fan and a Marvel fan so I was was sort of pleased — surprised, but really pleased — to see that he had such a knowledge of the Marvel Comics universe. So he’s bringing all of that.”

One reporter asked him about the footage shown in Hall H, observing that it was a bit filthier than he was expecting. Reed replied that they shot the footage on their set last week, and were hoping to show a short version of the mentor-mentee relationship between Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). Reed also explained that Douglas was great casting because he has been through so much, and in this version of Ant-Man, Pym is done and ready to hand the mantle to a new generation.

And, of course, he was asked about the challenge of fitting Ant-Man into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, allegedly the sticking point that ultimately made Edgar Wright leave the project. “I guess I don’t really see it as a challenge to have Ant-Man fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It reflects what they do as movies, and I love it because it reflects what they did in the comics… There was a lot of cross-pollination in the comics, and it was all about that sort of larger universe. So I like that the movie sort of has a way of sort of weaving that as part of the giant mythology they are creating.”

I think it is likely that Reed will deliver a perfectly serviceable Ant-Man film. I think it is unlikely to rise to the level of Captain America: The Winter Soldier or The Guardians of the Galaxy or, hopefully, Avengers: Age of Ultron, but we can hope. Reed’s first feature, Bring It On, was at a level of brilliance* that the director has not reached again. Let’s hope he can top it with Ant-Man. Good luck to you, Mr. Reed.

You can watch his whole exchange over on Collider. Thanks to Den of Geek for pointing it out. You can watch GeekTyrant's video of the Ant-Man Comic-Con panel here.

Trailer for ATARI: GAME OVER - Documentary about Failed E.T. Game

At GeekTyrant’s FantasyCon booth, we gave convention-goers a chance to play an original copy of Atari’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial video game. The two responses we got most were, “Whoa, that game actually exists?” followed by, “It’s even worse than I imagined!" One of the most successful movies of all time spawned a famous video game flop that cost thousands of Atari employees their jobs and eventually brought the ’80s tech giant down just two years after the 1982 release of the game.

Here's a trailer for a documentary coming out that chronicles the video game’s development and market failure, and the excavation of the estimated 750,000 copies of the game that Atari buried in a New Mexico desert. The film was directed by Zak Penn (screenwriter for The Incredible Hulk, X-Men 2), and will be released this fall on Xbox.

This new Interstellar trailer, previously screened during Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey’s surprise appearance at Comic-Con, gives us a much better look at the movie than the previous trailer, revealing the massive scale of the film and showing us what the interstellar part of the movie will look like. Also, whereas the first trailer focused almost entirely on McConaughey, this trailer showcases Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway a bit more. It also gives us a better idea of exactly how screwed humanity is if they remain on Earth. The tagline says, “Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.” It’s pretty clear from this that mankind will die if it remains on Earth. To paraphrase the Dylan Thomas poem Michael Caine quotes in the trailer, it’s time to rage against the dying of the light.

The script was directed by Nolan from a script he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo, Wes Bentley, Matt Damon, and John Lithgow also star. Interstellar will be in theaters November 7.

Bold Infographic Illustrates the On-Screen Tenure of Each Doctor

$

This neat infographic compares the tenures of each of Doctor Who’s eleven Doctors. Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch, it doesn’t count the War Doctor, and it is based on screen time, not years as the Doctor or number of seasons, which would look very different and open up debates about whether the years the show was not on the air counted toward a particular Doctor’s total (This is controversial. If you count the years between the end of the show and Sylvester McCoy’s regeneration into Paul McGann, McCoy has the longest tenure, but a British game show marked that as an incorrect answer to the question, so…). Anyway, by this measure, Tom Baker is far and away the longest-serving Doctor, followed by the original Doctor, William Hartnell. Let’s take a moment to pour one out for the dearly departed ninth Doctor, gone before his time. Where do you think Peter Capaldi will rank when he finally evaporates in a burst of light?

We found this on io9, which took it from Visual.ly, where it was posted by Wonderful Books.

Sonika's '90s area Gambit looks better than the movie version and does a good job of replicating the distinctive color pallet of the comic book character.

Read Tom Hiddleston’s Thank You Letter to Joss Whedon

$

Tom Hiddleston is good at stealing things (That’s right. I’m about to throw out some bold accusations). He steals scenes in every movie he’s in. He stole the show at Comic-Con last year with his surprise appearance in character as Loki. And if you read this humble and heartfelt letter he wrote to Joss Whedon, he’ll steal your heart… if he hasn’t already.

The letter appears in the book Joss Whedon: The Biography. Hiddleston wrote the letter to the writer-director after reading the first draft of The Avengers script.  Because Hiddleston is so perfect as Loki, it’s hard to imagine that he originally auditioned for the part of Thor.

Below Hiddleston’s enthusiastic and thoughtful letter is Whedon’s equally sincere response. Joss Whedon: The Biography hits shelves August 1st. Thanks to Collider for the heads up.

Joss,
I am so excited I can hardly speak.
The first time I read it I grabbed at it like Charlie Bucket snatching for a golden ticket somewhere behind the chocolate in the wrapper of a Wonka Bar. I didn’t know where to start. Like a classic actor I jumped in looking for LOKI on every page, jumping back and forth, reading words in no particular order, utterances imprinting themselves like flash-cuts of newspaper headlines in my mind: “real menace”; “field of obeisance”; “discontented, nothing is enough”; “his smile is nothing but a glimpse of his skull“; “Puny god” …
… Thank you for writing me my Hans Gruber. But a Hans Gruber with super-magic powers. As played by James Mason … It’s high operatic villainy alongside detached throwaway tongue-in-cheek; plus the “real menace” and his closely guarded suitcase of pain. It’s grand and epic and majestic and poetic and lyrical and wicked and rich and badass and might possibly be the most gloriously fun part I’ve ever stared down the barrel of playing. It is just so juicy.
I love how throughout you continue to put Loki on some kind of pedestal of regal magnificence and then consistently tear him down. He gets battered, punched, blasted, side-swiped, roared at, sent tumbling on his back, and every time he gets back up smiling, wickedly, never for a second losing his eloquence, style, wit, self-aggrandisement or grandeur, and you never send him up or deny him his real intelligence…. That he loves to make an entrance; that he has a taste for the grand gesture, the big speech, the spectacle. I might be biased, but I do feel as though you have written me the coolest part.
… But really I’m just sending you a transatlantic shout-out and fist-bump, things that traditionally British actors probably don’t do. It’s epic.

And Whedon's response:

Tom, this is one of those emails you keep forever. Thanks so much. It’s more articulate (and possibly longer) than the script. I couldn’t be more pleased at your reaction, but I’ll also tell you I’m still working on it … Thank you again. I’m so glad you’re pleased. Absurd fun to ensue.
Best, (including uncharacteristic fist bump), joss.

GeekTyrant Talks to Dave Bautista about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

$
0
0

When Dave Bautista first appeared onscreen in Guardians of the Galaxy, I was terrified. “Good hell,” I thought. “I have to interview him tomorrow.” Fortunately, he is a much gentler presence in person. Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer, one of the titular heroes. Huge, currently bearded, and until recently a professional wrestler by trade, he is eager to position himself as a serious actor, but in a way that is endearing, rather than annoying. He enjoys talking about Drax’s emotional journey. I spoke to him a couple weeks ago about Chris Pratt the movie star, crying on set, and what Marvel tells him about their upcoming projects.

You were probably asked this a hundred times, but you were a super successful professional wrestler. Why did you want to make the jump into movies?
Because I fell in love with acting and the WWE told me that I couldn’t make films. Laughs. Well, because they have their own film division, they still do, at the time they were really starting to really dive into it, but none of their films included me. And I’d done a small part in a film called Wrong Side of Town as a favor to a friend, and I really kind of fell in love with it, and I wanted to pursue it. So I understood that they didn’t want to include me in any of their films, but I asked for permission to go and do stuff outside of the company and they wouldn’t let me, which I thought really sucked. Because it was one of those things where they decide who their superstars are going to be and they kind of push them accordingly, and their plans didn’t include me, and I thought it was kind of unfair. You know, why can’t I have these opportunities, it doesn’t seem right. So I said, well, if you’re not going to let me do it then I’m just going to leave the company, and so I gave them about 9 months notice and I left. Kind of went out on a limb and took a gamble.

And you seem to have done okay so far.
Yeah… It’s bigger than anything I’d ever planned on doing. It’s kind of crazy.

What drew you to Drax? Why did you want to play this particular character?
Well, what I really loved about Drax was he wasn’t so one-noted, you know, was kind of a multi-layered, kind of a range of emotions character, which I really wanted and needed for my career. But that’s what made him interesting because I didn’t want to be Henchmen Number 3. I wanted to be someone with a heart, and that’s what I loved about him. Drax is such a kind of emotional roller coaster.

On that [Major spoiler redacted.] He is so bent on revenge, what happens to the character when he achieves that? What do you think he does then?
You know, I don’t know. It’s probably one of those things where, I think he’s searching for a way to get past the heartbreak, but my opinion would be that Drax will never get over the loss of his family. Nothing is going to cure that. I think he’s searching for it, he thinks that something might make him feel better, but my opinion is that he would never get over the heartbreak.

He has an interesting emotional backstory, but he’s also — he’s not dumb, but he’s really kind of limited mentally by his literalness. Was that fun or challenging to play, or both?
It was, you know, it was fun, and it really wasn’t challenging, and that’s mostly because of Chris Pratt. It’s just so easy playing a straight man to him. So it just — it was one of those things that if the timing was right, which again, made it very easy working with Chris, because he’s just witty and talented. And we had chemistry because basically our first screen test together was just a chemistry test. We didn’t have any dialogue, you know, we just went on and did a bunch of improv stuff to see if we did and right off the bat we just had chemistry. So in the end it wasn’t so much of a challenge.

That’s good. What was the set like? Because in the movie you guys are building a team, was it like that on set or did you guys keep to yourselves?
No! It was — actually, we were never by ourselves we spent most of our time on set, because once we were on set and in makeup and stuff it was long days. We didn’t have a lot of breaks and if there was downtime we just stayed on set. But it was just a lot of fun, a lot of chemistry, but a lot of chemistry was I think already built with casting. I think James [Gunn] kind of had a certain goal of making sure that we all did have good chemistry and there weren’t going to be any prima donnas on set. So I think that was one of his major goals, and it showed. I think right off the bat we kind of gelled right off the bat. We were over there months early for preproduction and spent a lot of time beforehand before we even got to filming so I think that was already kind of built in so once we got on set it was like a bunch of kids.

You are very tattooed and so is Drax. Did you have any input in the character design at all?
No, I went up there, you know, Drax went through a bunch of different versions. They kept, they would do makeup tests and decide they weren’t happy with certain things and then they’d do it again. But no, it was — that stuff was so far over my head anyway, because the makeup team, who was led by a guy named David White, was just so creative, man. I mean they came up with stuff that I was looking at and [was] just kind of in awe. ‘Cuz they had this big, kind of, it was a body molding where they put the tattoos on our skin, and I was looking at all the details, just so crazy, man. So that stuff’s like, I would have sounded like an idiot trying to tell these guys how to do their job.

Okay, fair enough. Do you know the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy 2?
I don’t know if there’s going to be a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 [Editor’s note: There is]. I would assume that there is going to be, and that’s really based solely off of my opinion of the film, because I think it’s great.

It’s really fun.
Yeah it was so much fun I just don’t see how they’re… when I first started watching it I was really kind of, as you would expect for me to be: looking at my performance, kind of analyzing it, and just kind of cringing, just like oh, man… But then I just got sucked into it as a fan, and I just want more, man. I just want to see more. So yeah, no. Obviously I don’t know the plot, but I’m assuming that there is going to be more to come.

So I’m assuming you don’t know when the Guardians are going to team up with the Avengers?
Laughs. And again, that would be along the line. You know, Marvel’s pretty hush-hush with everything, so like, I get wrapped up in the rumors, too, and I wanna know more, but they don’t tell me anything. Laughs

What was your favorite thing to film? What was your favorite part of the movie?
Um… Long pause, heavy sigh. It’s such a toss-up because you know, like, the Kiln, the prison set, was so amazing and you just kind of get lost in it while you’re there. So it was a lot of fun filming, but there was certain stuff we did on Knowhere — the gambling scenes — with all the extras, it was just a lot of fun. There were, like, we did a crash-site scene where there were so many extras it just felt like you were on a different planet. I’m sorry, I know I’m stretching this out, but it’s just a hard question to answer because there was just so much…

So all of it? All of it was your favorite?
Laughs. I know! It’s so uninteresting to say that. It was so much fun. It’s just hard to narrow it down to a favorite moment or a favorite scene.

No, it’s okay.
Only because this was over five months of shooting, so… There’s just a lot of good times, a lot of good laughs, and a lot of tears. Some of that stuff, like, there was a scene where, oh, you saw the film?

Yeah, I saw it last night.
Yeah, so at the end of the scene where [slight spoiler redacted, basically Star-Lord gives an inspiring speech]. But that whole scene, that was the first time I had really experienced Chris Pratt’s acting range. I had only, you know, we had done the funny stuff, but you know, he really sucked everybody in, like emotionally. You got invested. And I was sitting there thinking, this guy’s really good, really talented and kind of inspiring, and there were a couple of takes where he just kind of let it go, and it was very emotional and I started shedding tears, man. That day I was like, this guy’s a movie star, man. He’s a bona fide movie star.

First Look at the Twisted Fairy Tale INTO THE WOODS

That's Johnny Depp. He's doing a weirdo thing again.

That's Johnny Depp. He's doing a weirdo thing again.

Some of us have been anxiously awaiting the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and Disney has given us our first look at the movie, dumping ten stills from the film on an unsuspecting internet. We've seen set photos, but these are the first stills from the actual movie. We are hoping it will be awesome, and judging from these, it will at least look good.

Fans of the musical have been worried that the movie is overly Disneyfied since Sondheim reportedly told arts educators that at least one important song and story point had been cut and that Disney had objected to another storyline and changed an important death. The original stage musical is pretty dark and chockfull of innuendo. He later released a statement calling it a “faithful adaptation of the show” and “a first-rate movie,” assuring fans that the song is in the film after all, although he didn't mention the other issues. So our hopes are cautiously high again.

The large cast includes James Corden as the Baker, Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife, Meryl Streep as the Witch, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Cinderella’s Prince, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, and Christine Baranski as the Stepmother. Rob Marshall directed.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Into the Woods opens this Christmas.

Which should make for a beautiful film, but a more challenging production compared to shooting 35mm. Because of the larger format, the cameras are more cumbersome, heavy, and loud.

We also got an update on Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. If you're not familiar, Kill Bill was originally screened at Cannes as a single film and fans have been wanting to see the unified cut. An interesting development will now make the complete Kill Bill even longer than the version seen at Cannes.

Tommy Cook from Collider reports:

COOK: What’s the status on Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair?
TARANTINO: What’s going on with that is originally back when Kill Bill was going to be one movie, I wrote an even longer anime sequence. So you see in the movie [O-Ren] kill her boss but then there was that long hair guy… The big sequence was her fighting that guy. I.G. [The Japanese Anime Studio] who did Ghost in the Shell said we can’t do that and finish it in time for your thing. And [plus] you can’t have a thirty-minute piece in your movie. I said – ‘ok’. It was my favorite part but it was the part you could drop. So we dropped it and then later when I.G. heard we were talking about doing Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair — they still had the script so without even being commissioned, they just did it and paid for it themselves. It’s really terrific. Anyway – The Weinstein Company and myself were talking about actually coming out with it sometime, not before the year is out, but within the next year with limited theatrical engagement as well.

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is finally coming, but still no word on an official release date.
