INVINCIBLE IRON MAN Mural Depicts Origins of the Mandarin

I've got a set of beautiful and awesome art to share with you that focuses on the origins of the Mandarin. These were created for Marvel's 2007 animated film, The Invincible Iron Man, by supervising director Frank Paur. Here's what said about about the illustration above on his Facebook page.

"The idea was to be a blend of comic illustration and ancient parchment painting telling the story of the origins of the Mandarin, our villain for the movie. We opted for something else and I left them all unfinished. But during the time they were fun but a total pain in my backside."

As for the art below, he says:

"More of the Iron Man murals of the Chinese elementals doing their thing. the bgs were done by Fedja Jovanovic."

These things would make amazing prints! I'm sad Marvel isn't making good animated movies anymore.

FX_Strain_PalmerPenthouse_2165.jpg

An Australian promo trailer has been released for FX's terrifying new vampire series from Guillermo del Toro, The Strain. It gives us some never-before-seen footage from the great looking show. The Strain is an adaptation of the book Del Toro developed and wrote with Chuck Hogan. Here's the synopsis:

The Strain is a high concept thriller from Academy Award® nominated Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, author Chuck Hogan and writer/producer Carlton Cuse, which is based on the best-selling vampire novel trilogy of the same title written by del Toro and Hogan. It tells the story of “Dr. Ephraim Goodweather,” the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The Strain stars Corey Stoll, Mía Maestro, David Bradley, Natalie Brown, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde, Sean Astin, Richard Sammel, Ben Hyland, Javier Botet, and Doug Jones. It's set to premiere on FX on July 13th, 2014.

STAR WARS REBELS - Meet Imperial Enforcer, Agent Kallus in New Video

A new character has been revealed for the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels. His name is Agent Kallus, and he's an Imperial Enforcer. Star Wars.com released a video introducing us to this new ruthless and unforgiving villain. He is voiced by David Oyelowo who says:

"His job is to basically make sure everyone stays loyal. And anyone who gives a whiff of disloyalty has to be cut out. So, I guess you could safely say he's a bad guy."

The character is a huge threat for the Ghost crew's small band of heroes. Art director Killian Plunkett adds:

"He's pretty literally a rebel hunter. His whole task is to investigate any sort of instance of local insurgency and see if it's the beginnings of what could become a rebellion."

Sounds like an ass to me, but executive producer Dave Filoni says:

"I don't know that Kallus would think that what he's doing is really evil. He's just doing his job for the Empire, and he believes in the Empire... So, Kallus -- definitely an interesting character and one to watch out for. Especially if you're a rebel."

Watch the video below to learn even more about the character!

New Trailer for Angelina Jolie's WWII Film UNBROKEN

Screen Shot 2014-07-10 at 10.44.20 AM.png

Universal Pictures has released a second trailer for the incredible looking World War II film Unbroken, which was directed by Angelina Jolie. The film tells the real life story of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini who, "along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp." I love inspiring movies of heroism, and this is sure to turn out to be a great movie.

Jack O’Connell plays Zamperini in the story, and Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock play Phil and Mac, "the airmen with whom Zamperini endured perilous weeks adrift in the open Pacific." It co-stars Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as "fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as 'The Bird.'"

The idea for the film came from a book written by Laura Hillenbrand, and that book was turned into a script by Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men), William Nicholson (Les Misérables), and Richard LaGravenese (HBO’s Behind the Candelabra). So you know the script is solid.

The movie is set to be released this Christmas, and I can't wait to watch it.

Funny Sci-Fi Comedy Short - TIME TRAVEL LOVER

"Time Travel Lover" is a great sci-fi comedy short about a guy who is about to hook up with a girl, when all of a sudden his future self travels back in time to tell his past self to stop and leave. This sparks an argument between them, which is just the beginning of what escalates into completely craziness. The short was directed Bo Mirosseniby from a script by Elisha Yaffe, and I thought it was a very smart and funny film. I hope you enjoy it.

Doomsday to Appear in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE?

doomsday-to-appear-in-batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice

Another rumor has surfaced about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The news originates from Bleeding Cool, who says there's a chance the villain Doomsday is going to be in the movie. Just in case you need a reminder of who Doomsday is, he is the crazy creature who killed Superman. The death just didn't take because Superman came back to life shortly after. Unfortunately, it wasn't as a super zombie.

The site says that they have "rather reliable" sources who have seen Batman v Superman designs for the character of Doomsday. The report does say, though, that "much can change in the production process. This may be used purely for flashback purposes on the screen, looking at the life (and death) of Superman. It may be purely for promotional efforts to accompany the film. Or it may not make it to the final cut."

It seems like there are so many characters being packed into this film already. I kind of hope all of these rumors about which characters are involved with the movie aren't true, because it sounds like it could be ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, Doomsday would be a great villain to see in a movie! But maybe they should save him for a later film where they could put more of a focus on just him and Superman. That's just my two cents. I guess there's always a chance he could be included in the post credits sequence.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 "New Mission" TV Spot and Motion Poster

We have  another TV spot for you to watch for The Expendables 3 called "New Mission" for you to check out! There have been a lot of complaints about the film not being rated 'R'. I don't understand why this 'R' rated franchise decided to lighten up either, but I don't imagine it will be any worse or any better than the first two films that were made. I think it will be just as entertaining, so if you liked the first two, I'm sure you'll like this one. If you hated the first two, then I suggest you don't go out and see the third. The movie hits theaters on August 17th! I've also include a motion poster.

Guillermo de Toro Gives an Update on AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

I'm so disappointed that Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness didn't happen. This is a movie that has to be made, and Del Toro is the guy who needs to make it. I'm happy to report that the filmmaker still hasn't given up on the project! In fact, in a recent interview with Collider he talks about his plan to bring it to life.

Basically he wants to release two different cuts of the film — a PG-13 version and his unrated version. The reason the movie never got made in the first place is because Universal Pictures didn't want to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on an R rated film, but this way you get the best of both worlds. The studio gets their PG-13 movie, and the fans get their hardcore version. This is what the director said about it:

“The way I’m thinking is, PG-13 goes a long way. It’s not that the novel is graphic, but people forget that there are crucial elements in the novel that are pretty horrific.  Like the human autopsy, you know? I think that’s a dark moment. So what I would like to do is shoot it, as dark as it is, in an unrated cut and a PG-13 cut. Ideally they would be released simultaneously if that’s at all possible. We could release one [cut] in a certain format and the other in a different format with the hopes that we can offer more intense moments in one cut and equally intense moments but without graphic content in the other cut. Lovecraft was famous for suggestion, and a lot of the piece can suggest, but there are [certain moments] you need to show. Part of it is budget, part of it is rating. The one thing I’ll say is that at this stage for me, Mountains is not made. So I’d rather make it in a way that doesn’t compromise the content, or not do it. And, in the last few years, what has changed is that I’ve seen PG-13 films that are very intense. For me Life of Pi, the first 25 minutes of that movie were really very intense with the violence on the boat and the sinking. I came to think, 'you know what? It is possible to go to places that are intense but still have a strong appeal for a rating.' That, I think, is the main thing that changed.”

He was then asked about the possibility of shooting At the Mountain of Madness directly after Pacific Rim 2, and this was his reply:

“The only thing I know is that I have two studios that like the project very much, which is Universal and Legendary.  Legendary came very close to financing and Universal came famously close to financing and we were very much getting there.  So I think that there’s a chance we’re still keeping it alive. What normally happens is I have stacks and stacks of beautiful designs.  I have 30, 40, 50 pieces of key art.  I have maquettes.  I have concept art.  I have hundreds of storyboards.  And of all the things that have gone undone so far, the one that I would most like to share with the world is Mountains.”

I'm so happy to hear that there is still a chance that this movie could happen, and that it's not completely dead. I really hope the studios slap the greenlight on this project and bring it to life! This is Del Toro's dream project, just let him make it. He's not going to let the fans down if he does.

Fox has released a short featurette for their highly anticipated series Gotham. It's called "The Worlds of Gotham," and it features writer and executive producer Bruno Keller discussing the story and characters. Some footage from the series in also mixed in.

Gotham puts the spotlight on a young Detective Jim Gordon, and it looks like the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents sets everything off. The series not only focuses on Gordon and Wayne, but on younger versions of many of Batman’s most iconic and insane villains as well.

The premiere date has also been announced! The series will premiere on Monday, September 22nd at 8pm.

Here's a very amusing video edit that features several tantrums Mark Wahlberg has had through the course of his film career. The video is called "Mark Wahlberg Has No Patience," and this video proves that that is a true statement. I guess you don't want to get on Wahlberg's bad side, because he'll tear into you! Thanks to Yahoo! for the video.

Review: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Is So Damn Spectacular!

Dawn-of-the-Planet-of-the-Apes-3.jpg

It's a rare thing to see a sequel that is better than the original, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was simply amazing. Director Matt Reeves delivered a hell of good story with a solid script and spectacular special effects. This movie proves a point I make time and time again, which is that a big budget special effects heavy movie can also have an incredible story with brilliant performances from the actors, unlike Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction

As I look back on the movies I've seen this summer, this is easily one of the best that has been released. Hell! It's one of the best movies of the year. One of the main things that I loved about was the emotional weight it carried. Family was a main focal point of the story. It's something that everyone can relate to, and you feel sympathy for both the apes and the humans. It's a story that you really can't pick sides on because you want them to be able to coexist in this world!

This movie tells the story of how apes and humans had a chance to work it out, but because of some dumbasses on both sides, that doesn't happen. It's not a spoiler to talk about this because we all know what happens in the end. This is all leading up to the very first Planet of the Apes movie. It's just so frustrating to watch these two groups get so close finding a way to live together in this world and then have it slip right through their fingers.

On top of the brilliantly emotional story there was the insanely good acting from everyone, both the humans and the actors who played apes. I swear, Andy Serkis deserves some kind of Oscar for this. He brought the character of Caesar to life in a way that no one else could. There were moments when I was watching his character and I could see into his soul! There were a few times that I actually got choked up watching him interact with other characters in the film. Toby Kebbel played the ape Koba, and holy crap! He was so intense and absolutely terrifying. A few of the other main players include Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, all of whom gave stellar performances.

Those ape performances wouldn't be anything without the all the work that went into the visual effects of the film. The VFX in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes are phenomenal! I honestly can't believe that they are able to pull this stuff off. The facial expressions and emotions that you can see in the eyes of these characters is mind-blowing. Every time the ape characters were on screen, I was in awe.

There's honestly nothing I could think of that could make this movie better. This was a dream project for Reeves. He's been a huge fan of this franchise since he was a kid, and he knew exactly what kind of story he wanted to tell and how he wanted to tell it.

I know there are some people who are skeptical about this movie, but don't be. This movie lives up to the hype it's receiving, and you have to watch it! There's no way you will be disappointed in what Dawn of the Planet of the Apes delivers.

This is one of the greatest things I've seen this week! Youtuber The Unusual Suspect recut a trailer for Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan in the style of the trailer for The Expendables 3, and it's freakin' amazing! It makes Saving Private Ryan look like a completely different kind of film than it is. Now I want to watch it again. You're going to enjoy this. Thanks to Gizmodo for the tip.

As you have already seen, Scarlett Johansson kicks all kinds of ass in Luc Besson's new action film Lucy. Today we bring you a featurette for the movie that gives us a little more insight into the locations where they shot the movie. Both Johansson and Besson discuss the film in the video, which also features some new footage.

The film tells the story of a woman who accidentally is caught in the middle of a dark deal, but manages to turn the tables on her captors and transforms into "a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic."

The movie comes out later this month on July 25th!

Wonder Woman — 2014 Best of Cosplay Collection

Updated for 2014

A lot of really amazing Wonder Woman cosplay came out over the last year and 2/3 of this collection is completely new.

The costume is iconic and very hard to pull off well. First of all, parts of the costume are metal. Along with that, it's extremely form fitting, and just like Superman you either meet the physical requirements or you don't. Whether she's a symbol of female empowerment or the exact opposite is debatable. One thing for sure is you don't mess with Diana of Themyscira.

If you've got good cosplay or think I missed something, send it our way.

Raphael Does His Batman Voice in New NINJA TURTLES TV Spot

"I'm a snappin' turtle fool!"

Paramount Pictures has aired two new TV spots for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that have some fun new footage, including Raphael doing his Batman voice. I'm sure the movie will be very entertaining, regardless of the look of the turtles and Megan Fox's terrible acting. The movie is set to hit theaters on August 8th! I also included a video of the recent motion posters released.

New Info on PACIFIC RIM Animated Series

pacific-rim-gypsy-danger-sideshow-collectible-statue.jpg

Last month Guillermo del Toro not only announced a sequel to Pacific Rim, but an animated series as well. In a recent interview with Collider, the filmmaker talks about the series and what it will entail. The series is still very early in development, but he offered up some details on the premise and the timeline saying:

"It’s a great set-up and a link between the first movie and the second movie.  It really enhances the mythology of the characters; we have cameos of characters from the first movie, but mostly it’s a new set of characters.  New jaegers, except for one or two, [and] new kaijus.  It’s really fun."

He goes on to reveal that the show will be one long story, and not just a series of self contained episodes, which I love! I wish more American animated series would be like that. That's why I watch anime.

"We’re going for a long arc, so the idea is to show a group of characters—we have pilots, functional jaegers, but we have all these younger characters.  I really want to explore things that are complimentary to the things that I want to explore in the second movie: drift, what drifting does to you, what is needed to drift, a lot of stuff that I think is important, but also the jaeger technology, the kaijus being evolved, ideas about the precursors—the guys that control the kaijus.  We have a lot of leeway in 13 episodes and I wanna make it sort of in the same spirit of Pacific Rim, which is the ideal audience for Pacific Rim was young—very young, 11-year-olds and so forth—but with really beautiful design and stories that make these characters interesting in a way that I found them interesting in, for example, Year Zero, the graphic novel that we did.  And I think that’s the basic thrust of the thing."

As for where we might see the show air he says:

"Legendary is talking to a few outlets so I’d rather not disclose myself.  The way we set up The Strain was to talk to everyone, literally, on the map, and then find who’s response we sort of jibe with the most.  I think in this series, it would be great to find a place that can give it a proper presentation and can advertise the creation of the series.  So we’re open to being pleasantly surprised everywhere."

It sounds like Del Toro is leading this project on the right track. I just hope he brings on a talented animation team to bring this series to life. This has the potential to be really badass show.

TV Spot for Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD

tv-spot-for-richard-linklaters-boyhood

This wonderful film was quite an achievement for director Richard Linklater, and everyone who was involved with making it. Boyhood is a cinematic adventure that you have to experience. It may not be a perfect movie, but the tone, story and characters were fantastic.

The TV spot that was released highlights the growth of the central character of the film, Mason Jr., played by Ellar Coltrane from age 6 to age 18. It's done as a set of photos that flashes by in quick succession.

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It's impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

Boyhood opens limited this week, on July 11th, and expands on July 18th. Thanks to /Film for the spot!

Collin Farrell in Talks to Join TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2

collin-farrell-in-talks-to-join-true-detective-season-2

Colin Farrell is in talks to take on the lead role in the second season of Nic Pizzolatto‘s HBO series True Detective. There's also word that Taylor Kitsch is also among the leading candidates for the second male lead.

The first season of True Detective was incredible, and if you haven't seen it, you need too. It recently earned several Emmy nominations on Thursday, including lead actor nominations for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, as well as a Best Drama nomination. Those two actors both need to win for their roles!

HBO CEO Richard Plepler and president Michael Lombardo recently said that the first two scripts for season two are “more exciting” than those of the first season. I have no idea what that means but I assume they are just trying to build buzz.

All we really know about the second season at this point came from the creator of the show who said:

"It takes place in California — not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California — and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one."
