LEGO Movie Plot Revealed

$

0

Up to this point, we really had no idea what this LEGO movie would be about. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street) have revealed a few little details here and there over the last couple of years, most of which you can read up on here. But today in an interview with MTV they give us a full breakdown of the story that the movie will revolve around, and here it is:

It is the story of basically a young man who doesn't have a creative bone in his body and has to always build things from the instructions. He's an 'instructions worker.' In the Lego city, they build buildings, and it turns out in this universe it's illegal to build apart from the instructions. So what he finds out is that he's actually descendant from these like super creative Jedi-type people who are called 'Master Builders' and he has been charged with saving the universe from being frozen together by an evil bad guy, so over the course of the movie he has to unlearn all of that lame-o, uncreative stuff and learn how to build without all of the instructions in order to save the universe.

Sounds like it could be a fun flick. I liked what the directors did with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 Jump Street looks entertaining, so I think they will end up doing a good job with this one. LEGO has a huge fan base, and you don't want to piss off the fan base. The film will have a little live-action landscape, but the majority of the movie takes place in a CG animated "one-inch high universe" with "a cast of thousands and thousands and thousands."

As of right now the movie is in pre-production, they are designing the characters, writing the script, storyboarding the film, and working on the animatics. Casting the characters in the film is the next big step on their list of things to do.

Miller went on to say, "In kind of a weird way it's the biggest action movie we've ever done." Lord continued... "Of all time. And the smallest action movie of all time." What do you think of the story that the filmmakers came up with?

Vin Diesel has shared a new photo from Riddick via his Facebook page. The image gives us our first look at Dave Bautista and the Mercs from the David Twohy film. Check it out below, thanks to CBM.

Here is the Synopsis:

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Click the link below to see the full-size version.

The supporting cast includes Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, and Bokeem Woodbine. I am looking forward to seeing this film in theaters. Are you looking forward to Diesel taking on Bautista in a fight?

Casting Roundup: Fassbender Climbs MOUNTAIN and Irons Joins BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

$

In today's casting roundup we have some casting news about Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First ClassPrometheus) and Jeremy Irons (The Borgias, Margin Call).

Fassbender only seems to be in every movie these days--I am surprised he has time to sit down. Variety reports that the actor is in early talks to star in Gerardo Naranjo's romantic drama The Mountain Between Us.

The movie is based on Charles Martin's novel, which tells the story of "two strangers who survive a plane crash in the Colorado woods and are forced to rely on one another for survival, eventually falling in love." Fassbender would star as Ben Trace, "a doctor and avid climber who uses his skills to transport an injured writer named Ashley down a mountain in harsh weather." J. Mills Goodloe adapted the novel, and Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, and Jenno Topping are producing the project for Chernin Entertainment. This would be the first studio film for Naranjo, who previously directed Miss Bala.

THR reports that Irons is in final talks to join Beautiful Creatures, based on the adaptation of the young adult novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. He would join a cast that includes Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann, and relative newcomers Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert.

The movie will tell "a coming-of-age story about two star-crossed teens -- one a local boy, the other a mysterious new girl -- who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town." Irons will play the role of Macon Ravenwood, "the mysterious and recluse uncle of Englert’s character named Lena." Beautiful Creatures was adapted and will be directed by Richard LaGravanese

Fassbender is a solid actor, and I think he makes some great decisions on films. His roles are diverse, which make them more memorable for me. Irons is a phenomenal character actor that will do wonderfully in this role. Which of these films are you looking forward to seeing more?

Awesome LEGO TRANSFORMER Game Boy

$

The Domaster & Tetrawing is an awesome mashup. It transforms from a Nintendo Game Boy system with Tetris game to robot and bird, and then back again!

Here is a description of the figure from MocPages:

The name Domaster is an amalgamation of "Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound", the blurb written above the screens of old Game Boys. The name Tetrawing was coined by New York burlesque girl Dangrr Doll who does a Tetris-themed routine with D20 Burlesque -- a geek/gamer sexy striptease troupe in my town!

This project was the sequel to my popular Nintendo/Transformers crossover,"Plasmashock" the NES Zapper. I spent about a month or so (give or take) working on this Game Boy and cartridge -- the latter of the two took freakin' forever to engineer properly. The final touches of the Game Boy came the custom water-slide clear decals that I printed for the first time ever, and surprisingly didn't screw up a whole lot (aside from the obvious crooked Nintendo Game half above the right thigh of the robot). Also, the "Dot Matrix" label printed out much darker than expected on my laser printer, ergo it's hard to see -- but the blue-on-gray text for the buttons and Game Boy logo look damn fine! As for Tetrawing, his sticker is actually a high-res computer printout on glossy paper, cut apart like a puzzle and decoupaged to his LEGO frame with the help of Elmer's Glue.

The 2 AA battery blasters are a nice touch, if I must say so myself. It wasn't really difficult trying to engineer a sturdy but hollow system for the back of the legs to keep the two batteries encased; if anything, the head and arms took the longest to build on the robot. The arms turn sideways and fold behind the screen, whilst the head is attached to a series of hooks and hinges to fold back. The robot's feet fold at 90-degree angles and then slide into the lower legs. The legs rotate and form the bottom of the Game Boy. I used tiles to create the D-pad, A & B buttons, and the Select/Start buttons -- which also took some time to figure out; originally I had planned to use thin, small gray bars to be the Select/Start buttons, and even tried using the small headlight clips from Star Wars Clone Trooper helmets.

Check out the pics!

I remember how much I loved playing Tetris on my Game Boy, so this is pretty cool. I would love to see a Goldeneye Nintendo 64 Transformer. Which type of LEGO transformer would you like to see built?

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo Talks BIOSHOCK and HIGHLANDER Movies

$

0

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has given an update on his long gestating Bioshock and Highlander projects. AICN spoke to the director while he was at SXSW doing press for Intruders.

Here is what the director had to say about his love for Bioshock:

Yeah, me too. You know, there’s a problem with the video game… well, it’s not a problem. The thing is, Bioshock is super complicated, it is a very high budget movie. Obviously, the studio doesn’t want to make a big budget movie with an R (rating). And it has to be an R.

The rating is one of the reasons this project is delayed. Fresnadillo stated:

So, that’s the problem, I think, that the video game and the studio are trying to make an agreement about.

The director went on to talk about his continued involvement with the project:

I don’t know, to be honest. It was a very interesting experience to work with Gore Verbinski developing the story a bit and to pitch with the video game. I learned a lot about Hollywood and this kind of project, but I don’t know.

When asked about his plans to create the Bioshock universe, this is what Fresnadillo had to say:

Yeah, me too, but I would say… keeping in mind that the cost was one of the problems I would recommend to combine realism with good and special CGI. The most important thing is to make it feel like a real thing and I think you could do that with a good DP and a very real concept of the camera.

That was something I proposed from the beginning, (for it) to work as an experience, you know? From the very beginning to the very end tracking the point of view of the hero of the story, going with him.

One of the issues with the project is finding a way to create a story around a game where each player becomes the leader:

You have to create a personality and the proper character to track that. But, you know, it’s a project that is on hold right now, so I’m not paying too much attention to that. Right now I’m so keen (for) another project, which could be my next movie, which is Highlander.

I think it’s a very interesting reboot because I think the concept is so solid and very epic, which is something that I really love, so let’s see if we can continue working on that. I think it could be my next movie.

Here is what Fresnadillo had to say about Highlander:

Again, I think it’s about following the character. I would love, if we make the movie, to feel the immortality. Immortality is a curse and I would love to feel that. You are overcoming time, but you see at the same time that the most beautiful things, the things that you love, are dying and you continue this life as a tragedy. You can’t love with anyone because you’re going to lose that person.

I would love to introduce that flavor in a very strong way in the movie and at the same time the big connection with the Universe. “Why am I immortal? Why am I the chosen one?”

In that sense, the movie is an epic. I think it’s some kind of adventure romantic story about somebody who trying to share in his immortality with someone. I don’t want to reveal more than that, but there is a new revelation in the movie that is connecting with that in a very deep and strong way. If we make it, I hope you enjoy it!

It looks as though fans will not see a Bioshock movie anytime soon. Video games that become movies have a lot of problems, so it is good to hear that they are serious about making this a solid film. As far as Highlander goes, I did not like any of the films aside from the original. It will be interesting to see how that movie comes together.

Which of these films are you looking forward to seeing more?

Warner Bros. has unleashed four new TV spots for the Jonathan Liebesman-directed Wrath of the Titans. Sam Worthington is back as Perseus and ready to take on a horde of mythycal titans hell bent on destroying the world. The new spots include some new footage from the film worth seeing if you're excited about his movie.

I hated the first movie; I felt like I was cheated. But this sequel looks like it could be ridiculously fun. We'll find out soon enough. The film hits theaters on March 30th.

Here's the synopsis:

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington) --the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)--is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Brad Bird in Talks for HERE THERE BE MONSTERS

$

0

After his immense success in reinventing the Mission: Impossible franchise with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Brad Bird is quickly becoming one of Hollywood's most sought-after directors. While he has said repeatedly in interviews that he would prefer to have the earthquake disaster flick 1906 as his next project, Bird has begun taking meetings and checking out other projects. One of these projects is the naval adventure film Here There Be Monsters, a film that was previously offered to Robert Zemeckis, who declined the project to work on his first live-action feature film in a decade, Flight.

The plot of the film is similar to those of Seth Grahame-Smith's works (taking something literary or factual and blending it with something unreal or fantastical):

British naval officer John Paul Jones is wrongly stripped of his commission and hired by a rich shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of his merchant ships in the North Atlantic. Jones and his shipmates slowly realize that it’s the work of a sea serpent, and they use unconventional yet visionary naval strategies to battle the creature and stay alive.

While I think this story skews a little too close to Pirates of the Caribbean territory, it needs a talented director to take control of it and bring it to life. This is certainly a quality of Bird, who has proven himself to be a filmmaking force to be reckoned with. Can Bird bring this cinematic ship to port or will this Incredibles director jump overboard?

Simon Pegg to Join Frank Darabont's L.A. NOIR Series

$

Hot Fuzz and Star Trek's Simon Pegg might be headed to the small screen in Frank Darabont's TNT series, L.A. Noir. If he ends up taking the role, he will join Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) who was recently confirmed as the star of the series, as well as Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes). I would love to see Pegg in this series. He's such a likeable actor, and I hope he takes it on.

The story follows Joe Teague (Bernthal), Los Angeles cop that examines corruption in the LAPD and ties between police and underworld figures such as Captain William Parker (Neil McDonough) and mobster Mickey Cohen in the 1940s and '50s. Ventimiglia plays a former marine who served with Teague during WWII, who became a lawyer that was groomed to be a master "fixer" for the mob. There's no word on who Pegg would play in the series, but it would be a guest star kind of role.

Noir was picked up earlier this month by TNT. The show is based on the book by John Buntin called L.A. Noir: The Struggle For The Soul Of America’s Most Seductive City. It's based on the true story of a decades-long conflict between the LAPD and the city’s criminals. Darabont wrote the script and will helm the show for TNT Original Productions.

What are your thoughts on the possibility of Pegg joining the series?

Here's the full description of the book:

Other cities have histories. Los Angeles has legends.

Midcentury Los Angeles. A city sold to the world as "the white spot of America," a land of sunshine and orange groves, wholesome Midwestern values and Hollywood stars, protected by the world’s most famous police force, the Dragnet-era LAPD. Behind this public image lies a hidden world of "pleasure girls" and crooked cops, ruthless newspaper tycoons, corrupt politicians, and East Coast gangsters on the make. Into this underworld came two men–one L.A.’s most notorious gangster, the other its most famous police chief–each prepared to battle the other for the soul of the city.

Former street thug turned featherweight boxer Mickey Cohen left the ring for the rackets, first as mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel’s enforcer, then as his protégé. A fastidious dresser and unrepentant killer, the diminutive Cohen was Hollywood’s favorite gangster–and L.A.’s preeminent underworld boss. Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, and Sammy Davis Jr. palled around with him; TV journalist Mike Wallace wanted his stories; evangelist Billy Graham sought his soul.

William H. Parker was the proud son of a pioneering law-enforcement family from the fabled frontier town of Deadwood. As a rookie patrolman in the Roaring Twenties, he discovered that L.A. was ruled by a shadowy "Combination"–a triumvirate of tycoons, politicians, and underworld figures where alliances were shifting, loyalties uncertain, and politics were practiced with shotguns and dynamite. Parker’s life mission became to topple it–and to create a police force that would never answer to elected officials again.

These two men, one morally unflinching, the other unflinchingly immoral, would soon come head-to-head in a struggle to control the city–a struggle that echoes unforgettably through the fiction of Raymond Chandler and movies such as The Big Sleep, Chinatown, and L.A. Confidential

For more than three decades, from Prohibition through the Watts Riots, the battle between the underworld and the police played out amid the nightclubs of the Sunset Strip and the mansions of Beverly Hills, from the gritty streets of Boyle Heights to the manicured lawns of Brentwood, intersecting in the process with the agendas and ambitions of J. Edgar Hoover, Robert F. Kennedy, and Malcolm X. The outcome of this decades-long entanglement shaped modern American policing–for better and for worse–and helped create the Los Angeles we know today.

A fascinating examination of Los Angeles’s underbelly, the Mob, and America’s most admired–and reviled–police department, L.A. Noir is an enlightening, entertaining, and richly detailed narrative about the city originally known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Se–ora la Reina de los Angeles, "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels."

Total Recall is one of my favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger films, so I am looking forward to seeing the remake. Film Stage shared an international promo spot that shows the first bit of footage from the film. Len Wiseman directed the film that stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho, and Bill Nighy. Check it out in the player below!

The action thriller is a new take on the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick.

Here is a synopsis:

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Total Recall arrives in theaters on August 3. Watch the promo spot below and share your thoughts:

Do you think that Farrell will do a better job with the character than Arnie did?

HBO Cancels LUCK After Horse Deaths

HBO's Luck has been cancelled after a third unfortunate horse death. The network and executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann made the decision after the most recent accident. The show was in the middle of filming the second season, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. Remaining episodes of season one are set to air as scheduled.

Luck gave "a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling’s denizens – owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers." The cast also included Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Richard Kind, Kevin Dunn, Ian Hart, Ritchie Coster, Jason Gedrick, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens, Tom Payne, and Jill Hennessy. Milch and Mann executive produced along with Carolyn Strauss.

Here is the official statement:
It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series Luck.

Safety is always of paramount concern.  We maintained the highest safety standards throughout production, higher in fact than any protocols existing in horseracing anywhere with many fewer incidents than occur in racing or than befall horses normally in barns at night or pastures.  While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won’t in the future.  Accordingly, we have reached this difficult decision.

We are immensely proud of this series, the writing, the acting, the filmmaking, the celebration of the culture of horses, and everyone involved in its creation.

Quote from Michael Mann and David Milch:  “The two of us loved this series, loved the cast, crew and writers.  This has been a tremendous collaboration and one that we plan to continue in the future.”
Here is what PETA had to say about the news:
”Knowing that old, unfit, and drugged horses were forced to race for this series, PETA is glad that HBO has finally decided to cancel the show,” PETA said. The organization noted that it had urged the show’s producers “to use stock racing footage instead of endangering horses for entertainment purposes” and said that it “has called on law enforcement to investigate the deaths of the horses used on the set and to bring charges as appropriate.”
It would have made sense for the show to use stock footage instead of real horses, but that would have diminished the authenticity of the show. I personally think that the horses were given a chance to to extend their lives. Far too often horses that can not race are put down.

Jeremy Renner in Talks for MOTOR CITY

Jeremy Renner is in talks to lead Albert Hughes' revenge thriller Motor City. According to Twitch, Renner may step in to replace Jake Gyllenhaal, who looked to be set to replace Dominic Cooper. Cooper and Gyllenhaal had to drop out after they had scheduling conflicts.

Renner would play “a small time hood who is framed and sent to prison, only to exact revenge years later on a kingpin-type (Gary Oldman) to get back the woman (Amber Heard) he loves.”

Earlier, we reported that Renner was in talks to star in Ridley Scott's The Counselor, based on a script by Cormac McCarthy. That is slated to being filming in May, which would make Renner unavailable and leave Hughes without a lead.

Since Renner is great at these types of roles, I would love to see him star in either. Which film would you rather see him star in?
