Screen Shot 2014-06-26 at 1.56.33 PM.png

You can feel the tension in this recent clip that was released that features Caesar and his ape army telling the humans to leave them alone. The apes may not want war, but judging from what we've already seen in the previous trailers and clips that have been released… war is coming. Leave it to the humans not to listen. The movie comes out on July 11th.

Inappropriately Censored Scenes from FROZEN

completely-inappropriate-censored-frozen-videos

Who would have thought that Disney's Frozen could be such an utterly vulgar movie? The Jake Vale Show has created a couple of censored versions of the film which bleeps out ordinary and innocent words and actions to make them seem dirty. And it works! These videos are wildly inappropriate, but I'm sure some of you will enjoy them. The videos are inspired by the “This Week in Unnecessary Censorship” segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Roberto Orci Says STAR TREK 3 Will be Set in Deep Space

roberto-orci-says-star-trek-3-will-be-set-in-deep-space

It was announced back in May that Star Trek franchise screenwriter Roberto Orci would direct the third installment in the franchise. We haven't heard anything from Orci since that announcement. Paramount Pictures is gearing up to release the movie in 2016 just in time for the franchise's 50th anniversary.

Orci recently was a guest on the new Geoff Boucher podcast, Humans From Earth, and he talked a little bit about Star Trek 3 and what we might expect to see. He explains that the crew has started their 5-year mission, and that it will take place in deep space.

"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.  So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

When asked about what aliens we might see this time around he said jokingly:

"The Horta is actually the villain in the next one – no – they are in deep space now, so lets see what’s out there."

I imagine he'll be introducing audiences to more new alien races, which is the spirit of the show and what the Star Trek franchise is all about — discovering new worlds, new life, and new civilizations. As much as I've enjoyed the last two Star Trek films, they seemed to lack that spirit. But with Star Trek 3, it looks like the crew's adventure is going to really begin.

As you may have heard, Lionsgate is currently developing a new Power Rangers movie, and it has the potential to be awesome. While we wait for more information on the film to be released, we have a modern day style trailer for the 1995 film Power Rangers: The Movie. It was created by YouTube user The Unusual Suspect, and any fan of the original series should enjoy it. The editor says he used the trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past as a base for it, and the Power Rangers have never looked so badass.

Review: TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION — Bloated Yet Ambitious

0
0

Transformers: Age of Extinction is such a mixed bag. It has amazing action sequences, an ambitious storyline, a nearly 3 hour runtime, and the most gratuitous product placement. Just like fast food, the movie is processed yet tasty, with little nutritional value. We know it's bad, but we enjoy it anyway.

With a 17% rating from critics and a 73% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, the film deserves both scores. It is far from high art and is very much high commerce. If you enjoyed any of the first 3 Transformers films, odds are you will enjoy this new one.

The rest of my review is going to have some very minor spoilers. I'll try to minimize how much I reveal, but to properly explain what I think worked and what didn't, I feel it's necessary.

Very Minor Spoilers Ahead

Story

TF4_1.jpg

Pro
The darkest and most ambitious story. A human dark ops team inside the CIA is hunting all Transformers, Autobot or Decepticons, for their raw materials. This betrayal is very interesting and should have been the main storyline. What the film's ending sets up, if they follow through, will be the movie fans have been waiting four films to see.

Con
So bloated the film could have lost about 45min and been a much better film. There is a third party at play, another Transformer named Lockdown (the one with the giant ship). He is a bounty hunter... and he's vague... and completely unnecessary.

Characters and Actors

Pro
Mark Wahlberg is Cade Yeager, a likable father/inventor from the Boston accent part of Texas. His daughter, Tessa Yeager, is a broadly drawn character, but actress Nicola Peltz does a good job of making the family dynamic work. Jack Reynor as Shane Dyson is fairly charming and understated. I'd say he's the exact opposite of Sam Witwicky. Stanley Tucci does really well given the lines and material he's given.

Con
Lockdown had nothing to add other than extra uninteresting action sequences. John Goodman as Hound and Ken Watanabe as Drift are given such terrible dialogue based on human stereotypes that you will wonder how they are alien robots. I love Titus Welliver, but the focus his character is given adds nothing to the movie. Kelsey Grammer is a believable villain but the danger wrought by his character is completely undercut by Lockdown's presence; he becomes all bark and no bite.

Action and Effects

stinger-decepticon-transformers-4_0.jpg
stinger-decepticon-transformers-4.jpg

Pro
It's a Michael Bay film — the action is fluid, full of explosions, and layered. I saw the movie in IMAX 3D, and Bay makes full use of the format. I really like the new Optimus Prime and Bumblebee designs and the cars they transform into. ILM knows how to make amazing robots.

Con
Without revealing too much, there is a new type of Transformer, and how they look when transforming looks so weird that it pulls you out of the reality of the film.

Product Placement

Man of Steel had product placement that felt very natural compared to how garishly it's done in Age of Extinction. At the end of the day, the movie should help move more Transformer toys.

Parental Warning

The B-word and F-word were landed more times than I think a movie with a PG-13 rating should. The target demo for the toys, ages 5-10, is likely too young to watch this movie.

transformers1.jpg

Conclusion

The movie had an ambitious storyline that was muddled with too many characters, which ultimately made the movie bloated. The action and effects were great, but a new transformation effect almost shatters the suspension of disbelief. The amount of product placement was insane. I can only recommend this movie to people who enjoyed the earlier films.

GeekTyrant Score: 5/10

Ending Spoiler

The best part of Transformers: Age of Extinction is that it seems to setup an off-Earth movie, with Optimus Prime taking the fight to the "people" who sent the bounty hunter Lockdown. The possibility of a 100% human-free movie is what fans have been waiting for.

The Avengers are Coming to San Diego Comic-Con!

I know it seems like a given that the Avengers would have a presence at San Diego Comic-Con to promote Age of Ultron. But you have to remember that the whole cast will be in London shooting the film while Comic-Con is happening, so there was a chance that they all wouldn't be able to make it. Mark Ruffalo has some great news for the fans though! He recently confirmed in an interview with Collider that they will all be coming to Comic-Con! When asked about it, this is what he said:

“Yeah, we’re gonna go out there.  We’re all flying, we’re flying from London.  We’re working.  We’re shooting.  We’re gonna stop and get on a plane and go to Comic Con together. It’s gonna be amazing.”

It is going to be amazing, and you know damn well that they are going to show off the first footage from the film at the convention! I imagine that Paul Bettany (Vision), James Spader (Ultron), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver) will all join the usual suspects on the stage this year. I've also been hearing that Marvel will make some official announcements regarding other aspects of Phase 3. Ant-Man? Doctor Strange? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This is truly an event that you're not going to want to miss, and if you do miss it, it's ok… we got your back and we'll tell you all about it.

In the same interview, Ruffalo also discussed the standalone Hulk film we are all impatiently waiting for, and the technology being used to bring the character to life. He says he'd like to see it progress a little further before they tackle a new Hulk movie.

“We’re a little bit behind on the motion capture technology as far as facial recognition in real time.  Now we have, when I put on my motion capture suit, I look in front of me and there’s me as The Hulk.  There’s The Hulk.  Every move I make, The Hulk’s making it and so you have this immediate feedback like almost looking in a mirror, but instead of seeing myself, I see The Hulk …  But they haven’t come up to speed on the facial recognition that way.  They can capture the facial – the new technology is we can shoot the body recognition and the facial recognition at the same time, so now you can integrate performance, physical performance with the actual face and voice, but by the time we’re ready to probably – if we do another Hulk – that technology will be in real time and once that happens, there’d be no limit to what you can do creatively as far as your physical being is concerned.  I can play a freakin’ parasite in the ass of a worm [laughs].

"It’s so exciting.  There’s no limit to where we can go.  I hope to be a pioneer in this space with Andy Serkis.  I worked a lot with him on this.  I’m very excited by what he’s doing.  We are retraining the studio to see this as integral a part as the first unit.  This is not second or third unit or motion capture unit.  This is first unit.  This is performance.  It’s completely driven by the actor and it has to be honored as much as anything else, so that’s kind of where we’re heading with this technology and it’s very exciting.”

One day a new hulk movie will be released, and it will be everything the fans have been waiting for. Planet Hulk anyone?

5 Geeky Things: TRANSFORMERS Without Product Placement Edition

0

Transformers is out today, and it is terrible. Even the we-love-all-action-movies GeekTyrant crew can’t make much of a case for this one, and a big part of the film’s problems is the ridiculous, over the top product placement. The movie is being called a machine to sell you things. Yikes. So to pay tribute to the transformational awesomeness that might have been, here are some transforming items you can buy without helping to line Michael Bay’s/Paramount’s/Hasbro’s pockets.

Capt. Jules’ Telescope Ring
Who was Captain Jules? Hell if I know, but I’m pretending this steampunky ring that quadruples as a telescope, magnifying glass, and compass pays tribute to Jules Verne, the original king of sci-fi. [ThinkGeek]

Iceberg Lettuce Safe
Stick this head of lettuce in your crisper drawer, and thieves will never guess that Great Aunt Mildred’s 4 carat engagement ring is hidden inside. Or your totem. No one will ever invade your dreams again with your totem locked up in this baby. [BimBamBanana]

Coke Can RC Racer
Okay, it doesn’t actually transform from a soda can into an RC racer, and yes, that would be cooler. But you can still pop this into the water bottle pocket on your backpack and shock your friends when a race car pops out, and that’s pretty cool in and of itself. [Amazon]

Doppelganger Outdoors Wearable Sleeping Bag
If you’ve ever camped out in cold weather, you’ve probably wished you could just walk around inside you sleeping bag. Well, now you can. This genius product can be a jacket, a coat, or a full on sleeping bag. Keeps you warm, cuts down on what you have to pack, and isn’t horrifically ugly? We’re picking one up in case we have to sleep outside Hall H this year. [Japan Trend Shop]

Pocket Bands
These genius secret wallets were kickstarted a year ago. Perfect for running, surfing, or LARPing, Pocket Bands look like silicon bracelets, or maybe Fitbits, but they are actually tubes to hold your keys and money. They are great if you want to stop for a smoothie after a run without dragging your whole wallet around, or if you want to buy merch on the convention floor without getting pickpocketed. Here's a crazy radical piece of poster art for Sam Raimi's classic horror film Evil Dead II. It was created by Jeremy Wheeler and comes in a regular metallic edition of 50 and a bloody variant edition of 25, which is the one I prefer. I'm all about the blood. The posters are available for sale today from Fright Fest Originals. If you want to purchase one, click here.

GODZILLA Video Game - PS3 Gameplay Trailer

godzilla-video-game-ps3-gameplay-trailer

If you are looking for some more Godzilla action, the King of Monsters will be coming exclusively to Playstation 3. Will the game live up to the awesome movie that director Gareth Edwards gave us? Probably not, but it still might be fun to play. Movies rarely translate well to video games, and this one looks like it could have been better. Here's some information that was released for the game.

Bandai Namco Games is announcing on Thursday that it will release the PlayStation 3 game Godzilla in Japan this winter. The action game lets you play the monster itself against human civilization, as you clear missions by destroying buildings and weapons. The game will recreate the look oftokusatsu (special effects) movies, including signature tokusatsu camera angles and gunpowder explosions, with the latest graphics.
Famitsu magazine describes a backstory that takes its cues from TOHO's first Godzilla movies: Godzilla, who appeared in Tokyo in 1954 and was brought down by the secret weapon Oxygen Destroyer, has somehow made landfall again. The player must destroy buildings in the stage with Godzilla's iconic attacks. The game will also have the 2014 American version of Godzilla from Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures.

Watch the trailer, and let us know if this is a game you'll be wanting to pick up!

New DOCTOR WHO Teaser - "Am I A Good Man?"

To help ease our pain after the announcement that Doctor Who won't be having a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, here's a short promo teaser. The Doctor seems to be struggling with whether he's a good man or not. The BBC America also announced that the first episode of Season 8, called "Deep Breath," will air on Saturday, August 23rd at 8:00pm. Here's some additional information from the press release:

The episode ushers in an exciting new era for the show as Peter Capaldi (The Musketeers, The Thick of It) steps into the role of the Doctor. Fans first got a glimpse of Capaldi's Doctor in November's 50th Anniversary Special, and again in the final minutes of last year's Christmas Special, but the upcoming season premiere marks the first full episode for the Twelfth Doctor.

Capaldi will be joined by Jenna Coleman (Death Comes to Pemberley), who returns as companion Clara Oswald, and Samuel Anderson (History Boys, Gavin & Stacey) who joins the cast as Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where Clara also works. Previously announced guest stars include Ben Miller (Primeval, Death in Paradise), Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty, Upstairs, Downstairs), and Tom Riley (Da Vinci's Demons).

I'm excited for the next season to start, but still a little peeved that there won't be a Comic-Con panel.

DUET - Amazing Animated Short by Disney Animator Glen Keane

amazingly-stunning-animated-short-duet-by-disney-animator-glen-keane

I won't lie, this animated short film is so heartwarming and beautiful that it made me choke up. The movie is called "Duet," and it was created by Disney animator Glen Keane, who worked on some of Disney's great classics such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Aladdin, and more. He left Disney in 2012, but is still producing amazing work, as you'll see here.

The movie was produced through Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group. There's absolutely no dialogue, but it has a wonderful soundtrack and tells a moving story which follows the lives of a man and a woman as they journey into adulthood and manage to find one another along the way.

10 Fun Facts about THE KARATE KID that You May Not Know

0
0
karate_kid_1984_2.jpg

This month marks 30 years since Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita's The Karate Kid was released in theaters. I love this movie, and it's hard to believe that it has really been 3 decades since I went to the movies with my parents to see it. This is another one of those classic 80s films that I have never gotten tired of watching over the years. I still revisit it every now and then just for the fun of it, and I enjoy it every time.

In honor of the films 30th birthday, I've put together a list of ten interesting facts about the movie that you might not know. Your trivia knowledge of this film is about to be enhanced.

  • The yellow classic automobile that Daniel polishes in the famous "wax-on/wax-off" training scene, then later offered by Mr. Miyagi as Daniel's birthday gift, was actually given to Ralph Macchio by the producer, and he still owns it.
  • Surprisingly, during filming in late 1983, Ralph Macchio was age 22. Some of the cast did not believe him when he was asked about his age.
  • Charlie Sheen and Sean Penn both turned down the role of Daniel LaRusso.
  • The Karate Kid was the name of a character in DC Comic's "Legion Of Superheroes" who was a member of the Legion. DC Comics, which owned the name, gave special permission for the title to be used. There's a thank you to DC Comics for allowing the use of the name at the end of the credits.
  • According to Joe Esposito, "You're the Best" was originally written for Rocky III (1982) which explains the lyric "History repeats itself". The song had been rejected in favor of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". Ironically, Survivor also performed the theme song ("The Moment Of Truth") for The Karate Kid.
  • The "Crane Technique" while basically fictional, is based on a stance called the crane stance that is used in several traditional Karate kata.
  • One of the most quoted lines in the movie, "Get him a body bag" was improvised.
  • After Miyagi rescues Daniel on Halloween, he serves him a cup of tea. When Daniel grasps his cup by its sides, Miyagi insists that he instead support the cup from the bottom. However, the next time Miyagi drinks, he grasps his own cup by its sides.
  • When Miyagi and Daniel go to the Cobra Kai dojo the day after the Halloween dance, Johnny is seen with a black eye. However, when he fought Miyagi the night before, Miyagi blocked Johnny's punches, flipped him, and gave him a chop to the stomach, never hitting him in the eye.
  • The referee in the final match is Pat E. Johnson, a karate expert and former student of Chuck Norris. He instructed many movie stars in karate. He is credited as the "fight instructor/choreographer" for the film. He was also in Enter the Dragon where he plays a gangster in John Saxon's flashback scene.

Earth to Echo is one of those charming looking sci-fi movies that I'm excited to see. I like that it reminds me of the films that I used to watch as a kid. We have a cool motion poster created by the gang at Geek Nation. They've made several of these motion posters that they call "Mosters," and they're really cool. You can check out the Moster below!

After a construction project begins digging in their neighborhood, best friends Tuck, Munch and Alex inexplicably begin to receive strange, encoded messages on their cell phones. Convinced something bigger is going on, they go to their parents and the authorities. But taking matters into their own hands gets the trio in way over their heads when they discover a mysterious being from another world who desperately needs their help. The epic, suspenseful and exciting journey that follows will change all of their lives forever.

Earth to Echo was directed by Dave Green and stars Teo Halm, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Reese Hartwig, and Ella Linnea Wahlestedt. Want to watch the trailer again!? Here you go...

Robots are freakin' cool, and it's been awesome to watch them evolve in movies over the years. I love seeing all the different designs and types of robots that these filmmakers and artists come up with. I'm always on the look out for the next great robot character. Justice League #16 - Page 13.jpg

It's been revealed that the the next original animated movie from DC will be Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. The title of the film was revealed on the back cover of the Batman: Assault on Arkham Blu-ray. You can see that cover art below, which comes from Worlds Finest Online.

I've been enjoying the recent animated films from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Animation. There's no official information on what the story of the next movie will entail, but you can expect more details and other information on the next slate of DC Universe animated movies at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

We'll be there to cover all this, so stay tuned for further coverage on films such as Batman: Assault on ArkhamJustice League: Throne of Atlantis, and whatever else is announced.

Here's some story information from the comic book that will serve as the base of the upcoming animated film:

A Navy warship incites the wrath of the Atlanteans after its missiles malfunction during a test and end up attacking Atlantis. Ocean Master, the new king of Atlantis, declare war on the surface world. While they are in a café in Metropolis, Superman and Wonder Woman are forced to suit up and stop an aircraft carrier from flooding into the city and killing thousands of people. In the battle that follows the Justice League is captured, save Cyborg. He realizes they need help and calls in help from Green Arrow, Hawkman,Zatanna, Firestorm and more. The Heroes stop Ocean Master and figure out that Aquaman's assistant Vulko was behind the bombing so Arthur would take the throne once again.

Sounds awesome!

TV Spot for Dwayne Johnson's HERCULES

I don't know anyone who is actually really excited about seeing Dwayne Johnson's new fantasy action film Hercules. I have a feeling that the Brett Ratner-directed film is going to bomb at the box office. It's kind of a shame because I think Hercules could have been an amazing movie, and Johnson put an incredible amount of effort into transforming himself into this character. I hope it pays off for them, but the movie looks mediocre at best. We've got a new TV spot for you to check out today that has a few bits of new footage, if you're interested.

Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend… Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules' help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.

The movie comes out on July 25th.
