Amusing Fantasy Web-Series - CUBICLES & CAREERS

amusing-fantasy-web-series-cubicles-careers

A team of geeky talent from FantasyCon has created a funny mini web-series called Cubicles & Careers. The show is set in a fantasy world where a group of people gather together for a game called "Cubicles & Careers." It's basically the "Dungeons & Dragons" of the fantasy world, only they play as people from the real world with real boring jobs. What makes this so amusing is that the players don't seem to get a grasp of how the game is played or how people can actually live like the characters they are playing. This is the first of five episodes that will be released throughout the week. Each one will focus on a different person playing the game. The series was directed by Murray Triplett and Greg Johnson. I hope you enjoy it!

Fox's GOTHAM Series is Getting Lots of Positive Buzz!

Fox recently screened the pilot episode of their new Batman prequel series Gotham, and the reactions of the lucky few who got to see it were extremely positive! It looks as though this highly anticipated show is actually going to live up to the hype!

The trailer that was released for this series was incredible. It was so good it gave me the goosebumps. It sounds like that trailer doesn't even do the series justice.

Gotham comes from the mind of Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist), and it tells the story of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the rise of Gotham's villains and heroes. So here is what people are saying:

Then Collider says:

"This Gotham is grimy and violent, and clearly on its way to being overrun by a criminal element that will quickly be sending it on a downward spiral. It feels much more like the real world heightened than it does a comic book world.

"There are some really heartfelt moments in both the new bond that Bruce Wayne forms with James Gordon, who finds himself working the high-profile murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne, and the clearly life-long relationship he has with butler Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee).

"Robin Lord Taylor is a true stand-out as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. He is a low-level psychopath for Fish Mooney, but has a definite lust for power that will surely come into play as the character develops. His performance is just so good that people won’t be able to not talk about it."

MTV says:

"By far the best thing about the pilot is Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepott, the man who will later become one of Batman’s greatest enemies: the Penguin. Taylor is superb and transfixing in the role, down to his yellow teeth, creepy laugh and weird, freckled face."

The day this series airs is the day life will get even more awesome!

Chilling Clip from DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The first official clip from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has hit the web, and it's pretty damn horrifying. I know I'd be scared shitless if I found myself in a situation like this. It gives us a glimpse of what the relationships are like between the humans and the apes near the beginning of the story. It's vey uneasy, but Jason Clarke's character seems to handle it well. Caesar on the other hand is bit more high strung. Thanks to MTV for the clip. The movie comes out on July 11th.

Growing Up Geek: My Awesomely Creative Dad

growing-up-geek-my-awesomely-creative-dad

Since it was Father's Day this past weekend I thought it would be appropriate to talk about my dad, who is a pretty awesome guy. I feel very grateful to have a dad like him. There's so much I can say about him, but I'm going to focus on his creativity and imagination for now, since it had a big impact on me.

My dad is an actor and singer with a really amazing voice. His passion for movies is one of the main reasons that that I got into film. It's one of those passions of his that he shared with me growing up, and now I share it with my own kids. It's always fun going to the movies with my pops.

There's a lot of creativity and imagination that runs in our family. That came from my dad and his brothers. All that creativity rubbed off on my brothers and I. It seems like we're always in a creative mood.

I have a lot of memories of things my dad did for me when I was a young rambunctious kid. He used to make me my Christmas gifts! He was very into fantasy and I remember one year he made me a custom medieval shield and a sword. It was the coolest thing ever, and I wish I had pictures of it, but all I have are the fun memories of playing with it and pretending I was a knight fighting dragons. He was doing cosplay back when cosplay was just called dressing up.

There was another time he made me a huge castle playset out of Popsicle sticks. You know those custom LEGO builds that people do these days for stuff like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars? Well my dad was doing stuff like that but with freakin' popsicles and it was amazing! Those things my dad made for me were better than anything he ever bought me over the years. He even built a castle style bunk bed for me and my brother!

Halloween is my dad's favorite holiday which was insanely fun. For years he would turn the front yard of our house into a creepy-ass adventure for trick 'r treaters. He decked it out with all kinds of amazing Halloween goodies that included monsters, demons, skeletons, and witches that he would make himself. These things were terrifying and he would put a lot of effort into making sure the neighborhood kids would go home and have nightmares. Of course my brothers and I would get into it as well and involve ourselves with scaring the kiddies.

These are just a few of a ton of other memories that I have with my dad. I really enjoyed having a dad like this growing up. He's such a huge reason that I am the way I am today. He's not only creative though. He's always been there when I needed him. He's honest, knowledgable, goofy, supportive, charitable, and can be extremely funny.

What are some of the things that you love about your own dads?

One of the things I find a lot of joy in doing when I'm not writing is cooking. I'm not bad at it either! So being the geek wannabe chef that I am, I would absolutely love to have this Star Wars inspired X-Wing knife block set! The set comes with five stainless steel knives: a cook’s knife, bread knife, carving knife, utility knife, and a paring knife. I know they probably don't cut as well as a lightsaber would, but I'm sure they're awesome enough to get the job done. If you want to pre-order the knife block just click here.

Jason Momoa Confirmed as Aquaman and Kevin Smith Says DC Movie Line-up is Real

Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 2.05.40 PM.png

We've got a couple of updates for you involving the the DC cinematic universe. First off, THR has confirmed that Jason Momoa is indeed playing Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The rumor hit last week from a reliable source, who was obviously right. As I said before, I think Momoa is a solid choice for the role, and it will be interesting to see how big of a part he plays in the story.

Shortly after that, a list was leaked online that revealed the DC movie line-up of films Warner Bros. is developing. That list included:

May 2016 – BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

July 2016 – SHAZAM

Xmas 2016 – SANDMAN

May 2017 – JUSTICE LEAGUE

July 2017 – WONDER WOMAN

Xmas 2017 – FLASH/GREEN LANTERN Team Up

May 2018 – MAN OF STEEL 2

In case you were wondering how valid that list was, Kevin Smith says that it's the same movie line-up he heard. Smith has proved in the past that he knows what's going on over on the Warner Bros. studio lot. The filmmaker talked about all this on his Hollywood Babble On podcast, and these are a few of the highlights from it:

In regards to the list:

"Yeah, that's what I heard. That's what I was told."

In regards to how he knows:

"'Cause I know people mother f*cker."

How he feels about this list:

"That just gave me a reason to live, man. Like, who's that chick who don't wanna live? Lana del Ray? Show her this f*ckin' list. This is a list that would make f*ckin' grumpy cat smile, dude. Everything about this list is perfect."

It also sounds legit to me! Looks like Warner Bros. finally has a plan in place for their DC Comics properties. It could be changed over the years, but I believe that's what they have going on at the moment. Let's just hope that once these movies start pouring out of the studio they are good!

Honest Trailer for TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN

I wasn't the biggest fan of Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I thought that was the worst movie in the director's Transformers saga. The team over at Screen Junkies has a lot of fun breaking down the complete ridiculousness of this movie in their latest Honest Trailer.

"With Transformers: Age of Extinction on the horizon, it's time to buckle up and relive Michael Bay's loud, underwritten, headache-inducing follow-up to the first Transformers. Seriously. It gave all of us headaches."

It's true, it totally did!

Mark Ruffalo Talks HULK Standalone Movie

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Mark Ruffalo talked about the possibility of a Hulk standalone movie.

"I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the idea of it. When we did The Avengers it was basically 'No!', and now there is some consideration for it."

A few things to chew on: Ruffalo has a six movie deal with Marvel. Over a year ago rumors of Planet Hulk being adapted into a movie surfaced. Since then, talk about it fizzled out, until copies for the script of Avengers: Age of Ultron started circulating. The newest rumor is that the latter third of it helps setup Planet Hulk. I've included the trailer to the animated Planet Hulk feature if you are not familiar with the graphic novel.

When you watch the video of the interview, look at Ruffalo's body language when he says:

"But there's still nothing definitive, not even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look forward to going down that road, if we could crack that nut."

I don't want to straight out call him a liar, but if this was poker, that would be huge "tell." I think they cracked how to do a Hulk film over a year ago and are just waiting for the right time to do it.

Watch Chris Claremont Tell the Story of How James Cameron Almost Made X-MEN

I'm sure most of you are already aware of the fact that at one point in James Cameron's career he was developing a Spider-Man film. Unfortunately, nothing ever came of it. I would have loved to see what Cameron would have done with Spider-Man. You also may have heard the story of how he and Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow almost developed an X-Men movie for Marvel. In fact, it was that meeting for X-Men that spawned into the Spider-Man talk. We've posted about this before a couple years ago, but just in case you missed it, we now have a video interview of X-Men writer Chris Claremont telling the story of what went down.

The interview was with Blastr, and in it he explained how Stan Lee was in the meeting with Cameron, and that the filmmaker brought up the idea of producing an X-Men film that Bigelow would direct. In the middle of discussing the details of the project Stan Lee suddenly turned to Cameron and said, “I hear you really like Spider-Man.” Claremont says from that moment forward he could see the X-Men movie evaporating. Here's his explanation of how it all went down:

"It was going to be a Cameron-produced film directed by Kathryn Bigelow. What happened was that Stan and I went to a meeting with Cameron. The whole point was to pitch the X-Men movie. He was going to do it, he was going to produce it. He was looking to have Kathryn Bigelow direct it.

"I was all set to talk ideas with the guys, and we're sitting there...Stan looks at him, and says, "I hear you really like Spider-Man." And Cameron's eyes light up, and he's, like, "Oh, man, I love Spider-Man!"...and Stan's pitching ideas to Cameron, Cameron's pitching ideas to Stan, and going back and forth. And the rest of us are sitting there kind of watching the X-Men evaporate into oblivion.

He (Stan Lee) knew which character was his favorite, and if I were him, I would have done the same thing."

Both X-Men and Spider-Man eventually happened, but without Cameron's involvement. I really wish that we would have been able to see what Cameron's vision of these Marvel projects were. I can't help but think he would have done some incredible ground breaking things with these film projects. I guess we'll never know.

While we wait for a new trailer from Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, here's a new photo that gives us our best look yet at Shredder. A part of me wants to force myself to be excited for this, but I just can't do it! What they hell did they do to Shredder?! He looks more like a robot than anything. It's like a mix of the Silver Samurai from The Wolverine and… well, Wolverine. It's like they went over-the-top extreme with everything in the movie. Some people just don't understand that sometimes less is more. Feel free to disagree with me!

The movie will be released on August 8th.

John Cusack and Adrien Brody Join Jackie Chan's DRAGON BLADE

Jackie Chan is in the middle of shooting an epic historical film called Dragon Blade, and he's brought in John Cusack and Adrien Brody to co-star. According to THR, they will play Roman soldiers lost in ancient times in Hong Kong.

The movie is being directed by Daniel Lee, and the story is inspired by a missing legion of Roman soldiers that traveled into China in 48 B.C. Here is some additional information on the characters that Cusack and Brody are playing:

"Cusack will play Lucius, a Roman general who led a legion of 1,000 soldiers into Han Dynasty China. Brody will play Tiberius, who assassinated Rome's Consul Crassus and chased after Lucius with a force of 100,000 soldiers. Chan stars as the Commander of the Protectorate of the Western Regions, who teams up with Lucius to protect China's borders and sovereignty."

It will be really cool to see these two actors in a period film like this. They are both incredible actors, and I'm sure they'll give great performances. Chan plays a military leader in the story named Huo An, and this is what he had to say about the casting in a statement:

“I'm really excited to be in a movie with two of the most respected actors working today. It gives me confidence that the decade we spent researching and developing the script has produced something of a world-class standard.”

Brody added:

“It is a dream to finally work with Jackie. Aside from my longtime appreciation for his many talents, he is a beacon of generosity, and an inspiration to me. Dragon Blade is a tale of mythical proportions -- of good prevailing over evil -- and an opportunity for me to explore a character whose ambition challenges his honor."

Of course Cusack had to add his two cents:

"China is the future of world cinema. Having an opportunity to work with such film talents as Jackie Chan, Huayi Brothers, Daniel Lee and Susanna Tsang is a great privilege. I grew up watching Jackie Chan films and stood in awe of his talent, energy and spirit. This will be a great adventure for me."

The movie was inspired by the documented evidence of Roman descendants and Roman ruins in Liqian village in Northwest China's Gansu province during the Han Dynasty. This sounds like it's going to be an incredible movie, and I'll definitely be watching it when it's released.

Dragon Blade is set to be released in 3D IMAX in China, and in international markets on the Chinese Lunar New Year’s Day, which is February 19th, 2015.

Max Landis Is Now Working on GHOSTBUSTERS 3

Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis is the latest writer to work on the script for Ghostbusters 3. The news comes a few days after Phil Lord and Chris Miller were offered a chance to direct the project and passed on it.

The news comes from Nikki Finke, whose source tells her, "Landis probably is doing more of a ‘polish’ than a Page 1 rewrite." Another said that they're "not huge changes, but could be cool." Sony Pictures brought him in after they watched some of his upcoming film Victor Frankenstein and apparently loved it.

The report goes on to say that the executives at the studio are happy with the script, and they believe that "all the parts are there, as in beats, structural mechanics, etc, but they’re not all doing their jobs." They are also going to try one more time to convince Bill Murray to reprise his role as Peter Venkman… Good luck with that, guys.

The studio is still out on the hunt for a director, and they are looking for someone who will spark confidence in the project.

trailer-for-the-zach-braff-produced-doc-video-games-the-movie

Zach Braff produced a documentary feature film called Video Games: The Movie, and today we bring you the trailer for it. The movie chronicles "the meteoric rise of video games from nerd niche to multi-billion dollar industry."

It was directed by Jeremy Snead and narrated by Sean Astin. The doc features "in-depth interviews with the godfathers who started it all, the icons of game design, and the geek gurus who are leading us into the future." It's a tribute to the history of gaming from Atari to Xbox and and it will also give us a look at what's in store for us in the future. I remember playing the Atari as a kid, and I seriously can't believe how far video games have come since then.

The film is being distributed by Variance Films, and producer Dylan Marchetti had this to say in a statement:

"Everyone loves a great video game, but in recent years, they’ve evolved into something way beyond what any of us who grew up playing an 8-bit system could imagine. But regardless of whether you're up gaming until 3 a.m. or haven't played a video game in decades, there's something for you in this film, and we think audiences will be delighted."

The director added:

"Games are a part of the human experience and permeate our culture now more than ever before. I'm thrilled that my film will expose the world to a never-before-told story of the men and women who built this industry as well as what it has become and what it will continue to evolve into, and I'm thrilled to be partnering with Variance to bring it out to the world."

It looks like a great doc, and it will get a theatrical release in the United States and Canada starting July 18th, and will be also be made available on iTunes and other digital platforms starting July 15th.

Steven Soderbergh's Cinemax series The Knick looks so freakin' good! I've gone through some strange phases in my life; at one point I studied the history of medicine on and off for a few years just for the hell of it. It just fascinated me, and I always thought something like that would make for a great movie. A TV show by Soderbergh that stars Clive Owen is an even better idea though. A new spot has been released and it gives off a very intense vibe.

Set in downtown New York in 1900, the ten-episode season centers on Knickerbocker Hospital and the groundbreaking surgeons, nurses and staff, who push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.

The series is set to premiere on Cinemax on August 8th.
