Dear Hollywood, Three Words: Medieval Zombie Film

$

Dear Hollywood,

Why is it when I search medieval zombies on my Google that I only find a shelved project announced two years ago and this?

This is unacceptable. Maybe you weren't a fan of Stronghold by Paul Finch (I never read it either), but the idea itself is pure gold you would do well not to ignore. Believe it or not, the Medieval folks of yesteryear were just as paranoid about the walking dead as we are today. In Ireland they even used to put stones in the mouths of robbers, rapists, and murderers to prevent them from returning from the dead.

Allow me if you will to take you on a journey. It's the 14th century, Europe is suffering from the Black plague, but the infection didn't happen the way the history books showed. Cities were emptied as medieval zombies feasted upon the flesh of helpless villagers. Once the whole town was infected, it was down to the lords and ladies to defend their castles from the onslaught of the undead storming through the forests and trees up to the castle. An epic war that takes over a third of the European population. The ultimate war between the living and the dead.

Let's not forget this throws out the typical cliche zombie movie. In a world without guns killing a zombie would be much more hand to hand and force a touch of creativity on the writers part. Flaming pots of oil, catapults, and all kinds of weaponry from the age could be utilized to it's fullest. Let's not forget the valiant knights though! With their chain-mail it would be possible for them to enter the battlefield without being easily bitten by the undead. Perhaps the scene closes out with the paranoid survivors burning the dead and thus history is written.

This idea can also revive the seemingly lost genre of Medieval films, as it's been a while since there's been any on the silver screen. With the recent success of Game of Thrones, however, I feel like it could totally be a possibility to appease to both old school zombie fans, and the bubble gum bandwagon jumpers who just recently caught the fever. Am I wrong? Only one way to find out.

Signed,

Robot Reagan

Thanks to Bloody-Disgusting, we have a fun new TV spot for Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's horror film project The Cabin in the Woods. It stars Chris HemsworthRichard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Kristen Connolly, and Fran Kranz. The movie looks like it's going to be packed full of all kinds or awesomeness.

Here's a synopsis for the film:

A group of friends at a cabin retreat scratch the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out. If you think you know this story, think again. 'Cabin in the Woods' is a mind-blowing horror film that turns the genre inside out.

The movie is scheduled to be released on April 13th, 2012, and I'm looking forwad to it! It actually is set to premiere tonight at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin.

For those of you who are into movie drinking games, here's one for The Lord of the Rings in which you can drink yourself into a Middle Earth stupor.

While reading through the list of things to drink to, I'm convinced that this is one drinking game that could kill you. Every 5 to 10 minutes for 8 hours you would be throwing one back.

Is this something you would even think about attempting?

The building has become a sanctuary to killers, gangs, rapists and thieves seeking accommodation in the one place they know they cannot be touched by the police. Portman, Bardem, Renner to Join Ridley Scott's THE COUNSELOR

Ridley Scott's The Counselor may be gaining some more cast members soon. Twitch reports that Javier Bardem, Jeremy Renner, and Natalie Portman are in talks to join the thriller based on Cormac McCarthy's script. If deals are inked, they would join Michael Fassbender in the thriller scheduled to start filming in May.

Bardem and Renner are reportedly in talks for the role of the villain in the film. In February, Brad Pitt and Bardem had been named as interested in the role, but now Pitt has dropped out and Renner is circling the part. Bardem worked well in McCarthy's landscape as the villain in No Country for Old Men, and Scott is reportedly interested. Portman is in talks to play the female lead of the film and is also Scott's preferred choice for the part.

No official offers have been made at this time, but with the May start date, that will likely happen pretty fast. I would love to see Bardem playing another villain, and believe that Renner and Portman are great possible additions as well. Are you interested in seeing these stars face off in a movie directed by Scott?

CASA DE MI PADRE'S Matt Piedmont Directing KING DORK

$

Casa de Mi Padre's Matt Piedmont has reteamed with Gary Sanchez and NALA Films for an English-language comedy. Deadline reports that Piedmont will direct King Dork, based on the 2006 Frank Portman novel that has been adapted by D.V. DeVincentis. Filming is slated for June and will likely take place in Connecticut.

King Dork follows "best friends and outsiders Tom and Sam, who bond over their shared love of classic rock and roll, which helps them cope with the agony of getting through high school in 1987." NALA’s Emilio Diez Barroso and Darlene Caamano Loquet are producing along with Gary Sanchez’s Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Kevin Messick, and Chris Henchy. NALA will finance the comedy like it did on Casa de Mi Padre, which opens March 16.

This is the first project that McKay bought when Gary Sanchez was formed six years ago. DeVincentis has scripted two awesome music-related movies, High Fidelity and Grosse Point Blank. Here is what McKay had to say about the project:

It stalled, and them Kevin Messick read it and said it was too good to let it go. Matt did a fantastic job on Casa, and this is riht in his wheelhouse. Matt’s a  collector of albums from the 60s and 70s, which fits right in."

The movie is about that moment when you go from the confines of your room with your music, to venturing out in the world with fantasies of rock stardom. They stumble through in a scary, hilarious way and actually in a strange way become rock stars. We all remember the days when you’d ride a bike to meet a girl, or obsess over album covers and look at bands like they were on a different planet. The movies that capture that feeling and the pain of high school are some of my favorites, from My Bodyguard to Over the Edge.

The film will be made on a budget, but it will include music rights deals. “This is set in the 80s but the music is more about those classic rock songs from the 70s, which the lead character discovers from his dad’s old albums,” she said. “The music from that period is as rich as the script that made us respond so strongly.”

The big question is if Ferrell will be starring in the film. “There are a couple of good roles in it he could play and Will definitely loves the script,” McKay said. “But we are just beginning the casting process.”

Casa de Mi Padre looks really funny, and I am interested in seeing what Piedmont can do with this type of comedy. What songs from the 70s would you like to see in the movie?

Tom Cruise in Talks to Join Clint Eastwood's A STAR IS BORN?

It looks like Tom Cruise might be joining another big screen musical. He recently played a 80's rock icon in the upcoming film Rock of Ages, and now Cruise in talks with Clint Eastwood to possibly join Beyonce in his next film A Star Is Born.

According to Deadline, he'll be playing "an over the hill musician who helps launch the star of an ingenue he falls in love with and who watches him slide while her star soars."

It will be interesting to see if this pans out and he ends up joining the project. He's got a pretty busy schedule as it is. He's just starting to shoot the Joseph Kosinski-directed sci-fi film Oblivion, and after that he will take one the Doug Liman-directed film We Mortals Are.

Other actors that have been approached for this role include Will Smith, Christian Bale, Eminem, and even Russell Crowe. I think Cruise would be fine in the role, but Eminem working with Eastwood is a very interesting thought. What are your thoughts on Cruise possibly taking the role?

RIDDICK - Vin Diesel Shares Two New Photos

We have two new photos from Riddick thanks to Vin Diesel. The actor shared the photos on his Facebook page, and are shown above and below.

Here is the synopsis:

In the film, written and directed by David Twohy, the infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

Diesel wrote the following with the second image - "Dreamers... Have a good weekend." I can not wait to see a trailer for this film. Chronicles of Riddick was on TV last week, and I was reminded of how much I like the character of Riddick.

What do you think of the images? What do you think Riddick is standing in front of that will appear in place of the green screen?

Bryan Cranston and Anna Kendrick to Star in GET A JOB!

THR recently reported that director Dylan Kidd (Roger Dodger) will be helming the comedy Get A Job (title subject to change). The film will have a pretty decent comedic cast including Bryan Cranston, Anna Kendrick, Miles Teller, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Allison Brie, Jay Pharoah, and Brandon T. Jackson

Here is the synopsis of the film:

A multi-generational comedy about four recent college graduates, written by Kyle Pennekamp and Scott Turpel, the project will see Teller playing a young man struggling in an entry-level job, while Kendrick plays his type-A girlfriend. Cranston will appear as the young man’s father who is job hunting at the same time as his son.

The concept is nothing that we haven’t heard before. However, the cast is really good so that might be all that it takes to get my butt into the theater. I guess we will have to wait till 2013 to find out. Let us know what you think.

Tobey Maguire to Produce Sci-Fi Film THE 5TH WAVE

$

Tobey Maguire and his Material Pictures production company is set to produce a new young adult sci-fi film project called The 5th Wave. The film idea was picked up by GK Films and comes from author Rick Yancy, who will release a trilogy of books that the film would be based on.

According to Variety, the "series follows a teenage girl who survives an alien invasion only to then search for her brother, who may or may not have been abducted by human-looking extra-terrestrials. There's also a romantic angle, as the heroine is helped by a boy who might also be an alien in disguise." So there will be teenages from outer space!

The story includes several elements that we've already seen and read over the years, but it still sounds like it has potential. It's going to be developed for a young adult audience, so that should give you a little insight into what this film will be and how it will turn out. It would be nice if it ended up being better than what I am imagining.

What are you thoughts on this sci-fi film project?

Red-Band Trailer for Matthew Lillard's FAT KID RULES THE WORLD

Actor Matthew Lillard (Scream, Salt Lake City Punk) went out and directed his first film. It's a comedy/drama called Fat Kid Rules the World, and it's set to premiere at SXSW. The film is an adaptation of the book written by K.L. Going.

The story centers on "an overweight, depressed teenager who becomes friends with a high school dropout and street musician who's forming a punk band. As the musician's drug issues come to light, the teenager's father becomes increasingly worried about the friendship."

The movie stars Jake Wysocki (Terri), Billy Campbell (The Killing), and Matt O'Leary (Natural Selection), and Lillard has a small role on the movie as well. This looks like it could be a well-rounded, solid film, and it's cool to see Lillard getting behind the camera to make it. Check out the trailer, and let us know what you think!

ON THE ROAD Trailer - With Hedlund, Stewart, Riley, and Mortensen

Here's the first trailer I've seen for the drama On The Road, based on the book from Jack Kerouac that I've never read. I don't know much about the story, and I'm not going to pretend I know about it. All I know is the film stars Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Sam Riley (13), Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Viggo Mortenson (LOTR), Amy Adams (Fighter), Kirsten Dunst, and more. That's a pretty awesome cast, and I like the vibe I get from the trailer. I enjoy these kinds of period films involving people trying to find themselves.

Here's the Synopsis:

Just after his father’s death, Sal Paradise, an aspiring New York writer, meets Dean Moriarty, a devastatingly charming ex-con, married to the very liberated and seductive Marylou. Sal and Dean bond instantly. Determined not to get locked in to a constricted life, the two friends cut their ties and take to the road with Marylou. Thirsting for liberty, the three young people head off in search of the world, of other encounters, and of themselves.

Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think. Have you ever just dropped everything in your life and hit the road to find out what you're made of?

HALLOWEEN 3D Pulled from Release Schedule

Things are not looking good for Michael Myers in 3D! Bloody Disgusting reports that Dimension has pulled Halloween 3D from its release schedule. The slasher film was set for release in October but production has not even started. The project does not even have a cast or an approved script.

Todd Farmer (Drive Angry 3D) had turned in a draft for the film, which Dimension read and put aside in September. The studio has not found a take on the script they like yet. It is not known if the studio has lost interest in the movie, or if they are just taking their time.

I love the original film from John Carpenter, but the subsequent installments were lackluster. I hope that Dimension decides not to move forward with a 3D release and instead opts for a new reboot of the series. How would you like to see the franchise continue?

ROBOCOP Reboot Gets a Release Date!

Sony Pictures has announced that the Robocop reboot, set to be directed by Jose Padilha's (Elite Squad), will be released in theaters on August 9, 2013. This news is fresh off the heels of Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) being officially cast in the lead role. I'm curious to see Padilha's vision of this world brought to life. It's sound like he will be bringing some fresh to the table. The director previously explained his vision saying,

Wars in the future are going to be fought with drones. We won’t send a plane with a pilot in, it will be drone. It’s getting that way now and ten years from now that’s how wars are going to be fought. But what if a drone goes wrong – who is to blame then? Do you blame the drone? And that problem asks if you can you consider a robot guilty of a crime. Or is it the corporation that made the robot that is guilty? How do you fight back against drones when you don’t have drones?

The studio also announced that Cloudy 2: Revenge the Leftovers will be released on December 20th, 2012. This is a week after Warner Bros. releases The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I really enjoyed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and I hope lightning will strike again for the sequel. Are you looking forward to seeing either one of these films?

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series - New Promo Trailer

Here's a new promo trailer for Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. It gives us a better look at the kind of series that it will be, as well as the kind of humor that it will be running off of. It's got a wackiness vibe to it that I like, and that's what mostly sold me on the show. There are just these fun random things thrown in that up the show's entertainment value. If you are into anime, then you'll most definitely like this because it caries over some of those great silly elements of complete randomness.

Ultimate Spider-Man will debut on April 1st, on Disney XD. Check out the promo and let us know if you like what you see!

Steve Carell Set For MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE - SOLD!

Steve Carell has joined a new high-concept comedy. Hollywood.com reports that The Office actor has signed on to star in Magic Kingdom for Sale—SOLD!, based on the book by Terry Brooks. Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) is on board as a producer.

The story follows "Ben Holiday, a widowed lawyer, [who] finds an ad in a Christmas catalog for a magical kingdom. With $1 million to spare, Holiday purchases the kingdom from the mysterious Mr. Meeks and finds himself transported to the world of Landover. When he arrives, Holiday discovers that the kingdom is in turnover, and must unite the citizens and creatures of the world in order to stop an evil demon from wiping them all out."

Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, G.I. Joe) was initially attached to direct, but he has now dropped out. I think that the project will be better off without Sommers. Carell is funny, but I hope it is much better than Evan Almighty.
