Check out this incredibly awesome concept art featuring some alternate sentinel designs from X-Men: Days of Future Past. I really liked the final design that ended up in the film, but some of these are pretty badass as well. They were created by conceptual artist Maciej Kuciara, who also recently worked on Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rare Chinese STAR WARS Comic Book Rediscovered

rare-chinese-star-wars-comic-book-re-discovered

Back in 1980, Guangzhou Publishing House released a Chinese comic book adaptation of George Lucas' classic sci-fi film, Star Wars. It should come as no surprise that they did it without the legal permission of George Lucas.

The comic was released as a palm-sized picture book, which were very popular in China throughout the 20th century. Mostly used by the Chinese government for propaganda purposes, the little booklets retold stories from Chinese history and shared imported Western pop culture… like Star Wars!

The comic is called Xing Qiu Da Zhan, and it was discovered by Maggie Greene, an assistant history professor at Montana State University. She bought the comic for about a dollar at a Shanghai book fair held inside a Confucian temple in 2010-2011.

Star Wars never made it to mainland China theaters when the movie was released in 1978. The only place it played was in Hong Kong, so this comic was the only thing China had to go off of for a long time.

The art from the comic is really beautiful and cool. It's interesting to see some of the differences that were thrown in this version of the story. For example, Chewbacca is an ape-like creature in some parts and looks more like a Wookie in others. Then there's Darth Vader, who is seen making plans to attack the Kennedy Space Center. Some of the other things it features are someone cooking a duck in a toaster oven; a "J&B" logo hanging in Obi-Wan Kenobi's house; and a buff Luke Skywalker. My favorite part is that when Ben Kenobi tells Luke about Darth Vader's past, we see Darth Vader wearing a leather harness and posing with a dinosaur! It's also interesting to note that Bossk, IG-88, and some other bounty hunters from Empire Strikes Back show up in the story.

According to Green, the artists who created this book may not have actually seen Star Wars, so they were using limited promotional material and what they knew of western culture to put this comic together. For more information on the comic, click here. You can check out some of the art below!

Here's a fun yet morbid Indiana Jones infographic called "Indiana Jones and the Whip of Doom." It breaks down all of the people who died in the original trilogy, how they died, and how many of them died by the hands of each character in the movie. It also includes a section that explains why Indiana Jones is so awesome. It a really well done infographic, and it comes from Movie Pilot

"That's a hell of a lot more than 80!"

The latest TV spot for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes includes more new footage that you know you want to see. The spot proves that people in this post-apocalyptic world don't know how to count, and Gary Oldman isn't very happy about it!

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

The movie comes out on July 11th!

Olly Moss' Rejected TOP GUN Sketches

Olly Moss is a fantastic illustrator who has designed some of my all-time favorite posters. He’s in high demand, designing for studios, video game companies, Mondo, and his own art shows. But even he doesn’t bat 1.000. Yesterday he tweeted these rejected Top Gun designs along with an explanation of why they weren’t accepted.

I was asked to do three Top Gun posters but I could only come up with volleyball ideas so the sketches were rejected

Ha! That is hilarious, and that poster with the volleyball helmet? That is genius. I don’t know who rejected these, but big mistake. Huge. I doubt I’m the only person who would gladly pay money to hang these on my wall.

You can check out more of Moss’ work here.

Trailer for THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU with Jason Bateman and Tina Fey

The first trailer for Shawn Levy's comedy, This Is Where I Leave You, has been released. The movie has a great cast of actors that includes Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Corey Stoll, Jane Fonda, and Rose Byrne. This actually looks like it could be the best movie that Levy has made. That's not saying much, though, as his career consists of Night at the Museum and a bunch of other silly films. Here's the synopsis for the entertaining looking move.

When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide— driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on September 12th.

COMMUNITY Season 6 May Land at Hulu

It looks like there's a chance that Community will live on! Earlier this month NBC cancelled the incredibly funny series, but it seems as though the sixth season might end up on Hulu, which would be amazing. It may not be Netflix like I hoped, but Hulu is the next best choice.

According to Deadline, Hulu is in talks with Sony Pictures to make it happen. They say that as of this moment the conversations are preliminary, and there's no way to tell whether they will lead to a deal. But both sides are showing interest.

After a little doubt, Community creator Dan Harmon has said that he would be open to the possibility of taking the series somewhere else. Shortly after the show was cancelled he had this to say on his blog:

I will confess, however, that when Sony called me on Friday with the news, there was brief discussion at the end of the call about the concept of the show living elsewhere, and I was definitely in the “eh” column. For a million reasons, some selfish, some creative, one logistic, five sexual, three racist (in a good way) and, oddly, nine isometric… I said “eh” on a Friday afternoon, I will change it to a “sure, let’s talk” on Monday morning and Sony can do their thing. I’m not going to be the guy that recancels cancelled Community.

I’m scared to tell you how little a difference I think my enthusiasm will make. I know fandom, when it gets this deep for this long, becomes almost religious, including the urge to stone the less than faithful. But there are lots of reasons a Communityresurrection could be difficult. So be prepared for that. Which brings us to the other thing, the first thing, that most of the anxious tweets are about…

If you want to know the God’s honest truth, part of my “eh” was coming from the unsettling thought of your passion for campaigns being once again exploited by this rather unfair, somewhat backward system, one that now treats you like it’s your responsibility to keep a show alive, like a corporation is doing you a favor by feeding you low grade opiate through a regulated tube. Like you owe them an apology when they can’t measure or monetize you to their satisfaction. You deserve better.

I'm happy that he's willing to try and make something work, and I truly hope that Sony and Hulu can come to some kind of agreement. I would love to see at least one final season, and hopefully a movie.

First Photo of Harley Quinn on the Set of ARROW

Arrow fans got an awesome Harley Quinn tease in a previous episode of the series called "Suicide Squad." She made a very brief appearance and we never saw her face, but the voice was spot on perfection! It was enough to give me the goosebumps.

Thanks to Michael Rowe, who plays Deadshot in the series, we have our first real look at Harley Quinn, as portrayed by actress Cassidy Alexa. He posted the set photo above to his instagram page. From left to right in the photo we have John Diggle, Shrapnel, Lyla, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and Bronze Tiger.

I would love to see more of Quinn in the series! Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. In an interview with Collider, executive producer and writer Marc Guggenheim said that he only intended Harley Quinn’s cameo to be an Easter Egg to excite fans of Batman.

"She was always intended to be an Easter egg. I don’t want people to go in with incorrect expectations and walk away from Episode 16 disappointed. But there is an element to the Easter egg that was not spoiled by the promo, that I think people will find a lot of fun."

Fans sure were excited! I hope that he eventually reconsiders the whole cameo thing because I would love to see her have a bigger part in this universe. In case you missed the scene, you can watch it below.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - Set Stunt Video and Creature Photo

Here's a bit of Star Wars: Episode VII news that has been floating around the internet that I thought I'd share. Some of them you might want to consider this a rumor for now, but you never know when it comes to stuff like this. The last photo at the end of the post might be a Spoiler, but we don't know if it's real or not.

First of all, it's being reported that Hannah Levitt-Collins, Chloe Bruce, and Florian Robin will be working on the highly anticipated film as stunt doubles. Apparently the character that Daisy Ridley plays is "EXTREMELY gymnastic," and her stunt double will be Collins. The news was posted on daisyridleynews, but the site seems to be down at the moment of writing this article. Here's what was posted on it:

An extra on set of Star Wars Episode VII told me "today was very exciting, very exhausting, but really awesome. it was all about action today, explosions were awesome, and Daisy amazing like always, light on her feet, sharp face, beautiful, quick, and very polite."

Also, is Hannah Levitt-Collins, a dancer/model from London, Daisy's double for some scenes? There's evidence she's on set with her, just as there was with Chloe Bruce, the amazing stunt woman.

One of the stunt doubles, Florian Robin, tweeted out a photo (seen above) showing himself and Chloe in Abu Dhabi at the Qasr Al Sarab hotel, which is where some of the crew of Star Wars is staying.

I've also included a video that supposedly features Ridley doing some crazy stunt training on the set se to the film. The video came along with the following hashtags: #episodevii and #daisyridley. The guy who posted that video also posted an interesting photo of a possible character from the movie, and he tagged that one with #darkside. His name is Rey-Phillip Santos, and he is listed on the IMDb page of Episode VII as being part of the production staff. Treat these last couple of things as a rumor for now, but you can watch the video and see the photo below!

WORLD WAR Z Sequel to be Written by EASTERN PROMISES Scribe

Paramount Pictures has hired Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight to write the sequel to their zombie hit World War Z.

J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) is attached to direct the movie with Brad Pitt set to reprise his role as Gerry Lane. There are no plot details for the sequel, but like the first one, I'm sure it will be very loosely based on Max Brooks' popular novel.

Knight recently wrote and directed Tom Hardy in the movie Locke. He was also the screenwriter on the David Cronenberg film Easter Promises. The guy is way talented, so it's great that the studio was able to bring him on to write this movie. I thought the first film was great, and with Knight on board to help bring the sequel to life, it could be even better.

Stunning Live Action Photo Homage to GHOST IN THE SHELL

Ghost in the Shell is such an awesome, classic anime. I don't know anyone who has seen that film and hasn't loved it. Earlier this year it was announced that Rupert Sanders would be directing a live action version of the movie, but it's hard to imagine that a big budget Hollywood movie will get it right. The manga was created by Shirow Masamune, and the anime adaptation of it was directed by Mamoru Oshii.

We can only hope that it turns out as good as what Ash Thorp is doing with his live-action Ghost in the Shell photography project, called Project 2501. Thorp brought together a talented team of artists and put together an homage to the animated movie’s opening title sequence.

Here is a set of photos from the project and an intriguing behind the scenes video of how they are putting it together. It's really quite spectacular. For those of you who are familiar with Ghost in the Shell, you know there is nudity, so you will also find some nudity in the photos and in the making-of video. I just want to warn you that it's NSFW. This project definitely stays true to the creator's original vision. A lot of work went into creating this beautiful photography.

Here's a little information that came along with the video:

A respectful homage to Shirow Masamune’s manga and Mamoru Oshii’s seminal film “Ghost in the Shell”, this is a modernized direction that still tries to stays true to the original creator’s vision. What started as a photo tribute directed by Ash Thorp and Tim Tadder (photography), soon became a worldwide collaboration of more than 20 artists from around the world, with each and everyone coming together to help breath life into the project, resulting in the artistic interpretation you see below.

For a film that was a comment on the uber-connected society of the future, Project 2501 ended up being itself an example of how this collaborative group of creatives are so connected ourselves. Many of us never met beyond the communications provided by the vast and infinite net, but still came together to make the ultimate tribute to “Ghost in the Shell”.

Everyone of us wanted the opportunity to pay homage to a ground-breaking film that gave us so much.

We sincerely hope you enjoy our effort to capture the energy and beauty of the original film’s title sequence.

This team did such an incredible job with this, and I absolutely love the outcome. If anyone makes a live action version of this film it should be these talented individuals. I also included a the original opening sequence from the anime film. You can check out the official site for the project here.

Taylor Kitsch Says JOHN CARTER Sequel Script Was Awesome

I really enjoyed director Andrew Stanton's John Carter. It was a great movie that just got a lot of bad press and had a terrible marketing campaign. This should have been a huge franchise for Disney, and there should have been multiple sequels, but it's never going to happen at the point. I seriously doubt that anyone will attempt to make another movie based on The Princess of Mars book series, and that's really kind of sad.

During a recent interview with Variety the film's star, Taylor Kitsch, talked about the movie. When asked if the bad press was hard for him, he said,

"I mean, look man, it wasn’t an uplifting experience. My biggest regret would have been if I didn’t do enough personally. If I didn’t give it everything I had. If I hadn’t prepped enough. I don’t have that regret, so that allows me to let go. I still talk to Lynn Collins almost daily. Those relationships that were born won’t be broken by people we never met."

The actor went on to talk about the sequel and how awesome the script was:

I miss the family. I miss Andrew Stanton. I know the second script was fucking awesome. We had to plant a grounding, so we could really take off in the second one. The second one was even more emotionally taxing, which was awesome.

I would have loved to see what that sequel would entail. I can't help but believe that the sequel they were planning would have been even better than the first movie. I'm disappointed that it will never happen. Who knows, maybe a few years down the line someone will make another adaptation.

Updated: Will James Gunn Direct ANT-MAN?

$
0
0

James Gunn sent out the following Tweet regarding the rumor:

"Waking up to a bee swarm of complete bullshit rumors on all sides. Happy Thursday!"

But even if it was true, he's not going to admit it.

Here's the article that I previously wrote on the matter:

Since Edgar Wright dropped out of Marvel's Ant-Man, the studio has been on the hunt for a new director to take his place. They need to find someone fast so that they can meet their release date of July 17th, 2015.

A rumor has surfaced at CBM suggesting that the studio is looking at bringing on Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to come in and take the helm. This is what the site claims:

"An insider source has revealed to me that Marvel is starting to panic; they have Ant-Man releasing in a little under then 14 months. This is a critical juncture for Marvel, as they need to either bring on a Director who can work under their drafts and studio notes. Which is critical at this point to getting the film out on time.

"My source has informed me that Marvel is looking at none other then James Gunn, Director of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. The reason for this is because Marvel needs someone who can work within their limitations as well as be informed as to the current progress of the film. James' work on Guardians has not only pleased Marvel executives in early screenings, but it's also proven to both Kevin Feige and the Marvel executives that he's capable of working alongside Marvel. As a Director in the MCU, he's privy to the story of Ant-Man, and would be able to jump in without very little catching up being required."

If this is true, it makes a whole hell of a lot of sense to me. I can totally see Gunn taking the reigns of Ant-Man, and I think he is a great fit to take on this character! I'm also pretty sure that fans would actually be happy with him replacing Wright.

He's currently deep in the post-production process of his own sci-fi space adventure. Apparently the biggest issue at this point is that Gunn is also looking at some other projects he could take on as soon as he's done with Guardians of the Galaxy. The site's source says that if this is the case "one of the Gunn brothers (Brian or Sean) who have also been privy to the Marvel process might be brought in, although Marvel's current priority is to get James himself."

This is all just a rumor for now; there is absolutely no confirmation of this news. But if Gunn is brought in to direct the film, I'd be completely happy!

Warner Bros. has released a great 13-minute featurette for their badass looking sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow. The behind-the-scenes video includes interviews with the cast and crew, including Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. It also shows off a good amount of must-watch footage.

The movie has been getting a lot of positive buzz, so it seems like it's shaping up to be an entertaining summer flick.

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

The movie comes out on June 6th.

So far Focus Features has released a teaser and a theatrical trailer for Wish I was Here Was Here. Now a new poster has been released for Zach Braff's latest film project. I actually really like the design of this poster and how it has more of an artsy feel to it than all the other photoshopped posters being made these days. I really enjoyed this movie. It's not for everyone, but I think some of you will like it too.

Wish I Was Here is the story of Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He winds up trying to home school his two children when his father can no longer afford to pay for private education and the only available public school is on its last legs. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn't find.

It's set to be released in New York and Los Angeles on July 18th and will then expand into more theaters on July 25th and August 1st.

After all of the years of waiting, The Wonder Years is finally coming to DVD! I loved this series. It was one of my favorite shows growing up. Last year the series popped up on Netflix, but this is a series that fans would love to own on DVD, and it's supposed to be released later this year.

The original cast of the series has come back together to promote the DVD, and a few photos and a selfie of the reunion have popped up online thanks to Fred Savage, Josh Saviano, Danica McKellar, and Jason Hervey. You can check those out below!

It looks like this might be part of a documentary that’ll be included on the DVD set that will focus on the history and filming of the show.
