Netflix May Team With Cable Providers

$
0
0

Cable providers have been in a Netflix-induced red haze as of late. Many companies have seen large numbers of customers cancel their premium channels and go with Netflix Instant instead. Let's face it, the cost of premium channels is rather high. I personally have cancelled my HBO and use Netflix or other forms of streaming and Redbox to watch the movies I want, when I want.

Netflix has made some missteps lately, but this recent news seems like a wise move for the company. THR (via Reuters) reports that CEO Reed Hastings has been meeting with some major U.S. cable operators to discuss making the online streaming service available to cable subscribers. It is not known which cable companies Netflix has met with, but the idea of teaming with cable companies was mentioned by Hastings at a recent investor conference.

Reuters states that one cable company may end up experimenting with offering Netflix by the end of the year. If an agreement is reached, the company would have to modify its content licensing deals, which currently don't allow Netflix to bring programming to cable set-top boxes.

Netflix declined to comment, but released this statement:
"This news is consistent with the company's attempt to brand itself as an Internet network and makes some sense for [pay TV distributors] that are concerned Netflix could trigger cannibalization of their video business," Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible said in a report Wednesday morning. "In the end, we believe this move could signal that Netflix needs new mechanisms to drive sub growth and that it could be concerned about the looming implementation of usage-based broadband" pricing as recently introduced by Time Warner Cable.

Added Wible: "A deal with [pay TV distributors] may increase Netflix's chances of survival, but would force the company to reduce its terminal revenue opportunity by sharing average revenue per user with [distributors]."
It was also suggested that HBO may react by offering its HBO Go service directly to consumers, but HBO declined to comment.
I would only consider moving back to premium channels if the costs were substantially reduced. The idea of Netflix being included makes a lot of sense to me. Would you pay or re-sign with cable if Netflix were included?

Check out this great series of replica helmets for The Avengers' Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man. They are part of eFX's new line of Marvel Avengers collectibles, and they will be on display during WonderCon in Anaheim next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This is be their first public appearance. They will go on pre-sale soon after WonderCon ends.

The items to be shown (with pre-order beginning shortly after WonderCon) include eFX's Captain America shield and helmet; Thor hammer and helmet (from the upcoming Avengers film); and the Iron Man and War Machine helmets.  There will be plenty of photo opportunities, plus interviews with Bryan Ono, president of eFX Inc.

Also in the eFX booth will be items from the Star Wars Legends series, which are collectibles molded from the actual props used in the films.  They include eFX's Darth Maul lightsaber and a new Legend-series Stormtrooper helmet.  eFX will also display its Viper helmet, based on the helmets worn in the original Battlestar Galactica series.

Of the three helmets what one would you be ok with wearing to work? Or would you like all of them, and just wear them on a rotation?

ZORRO REBORN Close to Landing a Director

$

0

The director of the popular short film The Raven, Ricardo de Montreuil, has come out on top as 20th Century Fox's choice to direct Zorro Reborn

The film is described as "a futuristic reboot of the Zorro mythology that will not be set in California or Mexico, despite the story's Western themes." Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Science of Sleep, Blindnesswill be taking on the role of the legendary Spanish swordsman as a masked vigilante hell-bent on revenge against an evil tyrant and his gang of mercenaries.

Zorro Reborn was scripted by Glenn Gers, along with Harker scribes Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. According to Variety as of right now De Montreuil will direct the screen test for Bernal, but he's not officially signed on to direct the movie... yet. I imagine they're waiting to see how he does with the screen test.

Back in 2010 Universal acquired the rights to adapt Montreuill's short The Raven into a feature film with Mark Wahlberg producing. Justin Marks is writing the script, but there's no word on where that production currently stands.

For those of you who missed the short film or want to be reminded of it, you can watch it below! The director certainly has some talent, and it will be interesting to see if he ends up getting the directing gig for Zorro Reborn or not. I think he'd do a pretty solid job bringing the story to life. What do you think?

New Trailer for WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING with Chris Rock and Dennis Quaid

Here's a new trailer for the comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting. I normally wouldn't post a trailer to a movie like this, but this new trailer for the film focuses on the dads in the movie, played by Chris RockThomas LennonBen FalconeRob Huebel, and Dennis Quaid.

Being a dad myself, I can relate to the insanity of having children, and I will tell you... nothing can prepare you for it. If you are having a kid or thinking of having one I wish you the best of luck. The film looks silly as hell, but if you're a parent then there's sure to be a few laughs because you can relate.

The movie was directed by Kirk Jones from a script written by Shauna Cross and Heather Hach. It stars Cameron DiazJennifer LopezAnna KendrickElizabeth BanksBrooklyn DeckerJoe ManganielloMatthew MorrisonChace CrawfordRodrigo SantoroAmir Talai, and more.

Here's the Synopsis:

Over the moon about starting a family, TV fitness guru Jules and dance show star Evan find that their high-octane celebrity lives don’t stand a chance against the surprise demands of pregnancy. Baby-crazy author and advocate Wendy gets a taste of her own militant mommy advice when pregnancy hormones ravage her body; while Wendy’s husband, Gary, struggles not to be outdone by his competitive alpha-Dad, who’s expecting twins with his much younger trophy wife, Skyler. Photographer Holly is prepared to travel the globe to adopt a child, but her husband Alex isn’t so sure, and tries to quiet his panic by attending a “dudes” support group, where new fathers get to tell it like it really is. And rival food truck chefs Rosie and Marco’s surprise hook-up results in an unexpected quandary: what to do when your first child comes before your first date?

The movie comes out on May 18th, 2012. Watch the trailer below, and hit us up with your thoughts!

PIRANHA 3D Director Looking to Take On UNDYING LOVE

$

0

Piranha 3D director Alexandre Aja is currently negotiating a deal to take on a feature film adaptation of Image Comics' Undying Love. The comic was published in 2011 and was created by Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman, who have also written the script.

According to the official description, the story is "a horror-action tale, equal parts vampire mythology and Chinese folklore, set in modern day Hong Kong. Ex-soldier John Sargent has fallen for a beautiful Chinese woman named Mei. The only thing keeping the star-crossed lovers apart: Mei's a vampire. To free Mei from the curse, Sargent sets out to destroy the vampire that made her. The only problem: Mei was turned by one of the most powerful vampires in history..."

I haven't read the comic, but I guess it has the potential of turning out to be good movie regardless of all of the vampire films that will eventually be released. Vampires are a fact of life, and no matter how hard we try we can't escape them, they will always be with us now and forever. Vampire movies will never die.

As for Aja possibly directing the film, I've never really loved anything he's done, so I imagine this will turn out to be one of those mediocre comic book film adaptations. Where do you currently stand on the status of vampire films in Hollywood?

The last couple of times I've been to Disneyland's California Adventure I've gotten a little glimpse at the new theme park attraction they are building, which is based on Pixar's Cars. DARK SHADOWS Gives Up Four New Pics

Here's for new images for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows featuring Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfieffer, and Chloe Moretz. I'm looking forward to seeing a trailer for this movie. From what I've seen in the the images that have been released, it looks like Burton has done a great job creating this gothic world. I think we're going to see a different side of Burton's imagination with this film, with touches of the stuff we are used to seeing from him. I don't think it will be so over-the-top.

Here's the synopsis:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Depp) has the world at his feet--or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley) and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

The movie comes to theaters on May 11th, 2012. What are your thoughts on what you've seen from the film so far?

THE LONE RANGER - First Look at Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer

Here's your first look at Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto in the upcoming Disney adaptation of The Lone Ranger being directed by Gore Verbinski. Both actors look great in their roles, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out. The Film has a ridiculous budget, so it better turn out to be good!

The story will be a "thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption."

The film also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.

The movie will be released by Walt Disney Pictures on May 31st, 2013. What do you think of the first look photo?

COMMUNITY Animated Short - Part 1

NBC recently announced that they would be releasing a Community animated short in three parts. The short is called Abed's Master Key, and today they released the first episode. The whole cast of the show will be lending their voices to the characters.

The first part of the series basically shows the study group getting used to their animated bodies. Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) comes in to deliver an important mission to Abed (Danny Pudi). The second episode of the series will premiere later on today, and the conclusion is set to debut on Friday. Community is coming back March 15 at 8 p.m. Enjoy the first part of the short below!

Here's the synopsis:

In the three-part sequence of "Abed's Master Key," Dean Pelton hires Abed as his temporary assistant. Entrusted with a Greendale Master Key, Abed abuses his power to help his friends, and after Britta confronts Abed, she heads down the same dark path.

CHRONICLE 2 will be Written by Max Landis

0

Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis has been hired by Fox to write the sequel to the superhero sci-fi film. The first film opened up last month and has made over $105 million dollars, which pretty good for only a $12 million dollar investment.

I enjoyed watching the first film that starred Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan, who played three high school friends that accidentally obtained telekinetic superpowers. Because of this heir lives start going out of control on a downward spiral as their friendship is tested and one begins to explore the dark side and starts to take his aggression out on innocent people. His friends are forced to stop him.

The end of the film was left wide open for a sequel, so it makes sense that it's happening and that Landis will be writing it. The first film was entertaining, and I imagine the sequel will be just as fun. I do hope they ditch the found footage camera style the second time around.

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment acquired a pitch from Landis called Amnesty last year that Ron Howard is attached to direct. Then early this year Disney grabbed an untitled adventure pitch from Landis as well.

What are your thoughts on Landis taking on Chronicle 2? Are you even looking forward to seeing a sequel?

Incredible STAR WARS IDENTITIES Exhibit Poster Art

Star War Identities was revealed a few months ago, and it was described as being a new interactive museum exhibit that is scheduled to debut at the Montreal Science Centre on April 19th. It will focus on the pivotal developments of Anakin and Luke Skywalker. It will combine material from the Lucasfilm archives with a scientific approach to the concept of identity to present an interactive experience for fans giving them an experience that will allow them to "rediscover the unforgettable characters of Star Wars in a whole new way." It will allow us to explore the theme of personal identity both in ourselves and in the characters that inhabit the Star Wars universe.

We have a collection of incredibly awesome posters to share with you that are not only promoting the exhibit, but are a part of it. It's up to you to decipher the meaning of the portraits created ofor these posters. Here's what the Star Wars blog has to say about these posters and what they are for:

Rather than offer an explanation of each, we are leaving it to our readers to decipher the meaning inherent in the portraits. Given the exhibit’s theme of identity, or “the forces that shape us,” the illustrations draw inspiration from each character’s individuality — what it is that makes them unique or the things and events that shaped them along the way.

Look over all of the posters, and give us your interpretation of them!

About Star Wars Identities:

Star Wars Identities explores the theme of identity via ten components that help shape who we are. According to current scientific research, these are our: species, genes, parents, culture, mentors, friends, marking events, occupation, personality, and values. These ten components are grouped into the exhibit’s three main areas or subthemes, which follow the progression of identity from childhood to adulthood: first Origins, thenInfluences, and finally Choices. Using the Star Wars films as a lens through which to explore these themes and components of identity, the visitor learns more about their favorite Star Wars characters, and also something about themselves in the process. The exhibit follows the story arcs of Luke and Anakin Skywalker: two heroes who share similar genes, were raised on the same planet, but whose choices in life took them along very different paths. At the same time, a unique interactive “identity quest” allows visitors to put themselves at the center of the action and design their own Star Wars hero identity as they make their way through the exhibit.

Here's the full press release with all of the details:

For thirty-five years, audiences around the world have followed the adventures of Luke and Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi heroes of a galaxy far, far away. And now, a new exciting exhibition comes to our own galaxy with Star Wars Identities, a redefined modern exhibition experience in which we will rediscover the unforgettable characters of Star Wars in a whole new way. From the team that brought you Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology, this new innovative exhibition, made possible by Lucasfilm Ltd. and produced by Montreal's X3 Productions, will make use of an extensive collection from the Lucasfilm Archives to explore the sciences of identity through the characters of Star Wars. The world premiere of this exhibition will be held at the Montreal Science Centre, starting on April 19, 2012.

A stunning collection from the Lucasfilm Archives, a customized, interactive identity quest, and insightful scientific content will all work together in Star Wars Identities to follow the dramatic journeys of Luke and Anakin Skywalker, cinema's most famous father and son duo. Visitors will develop a better understanding of what makes the characters of Star Wars who they are, and at the same time explore their own identity with one question, at once simple and profound: What forces shape you?

The Components of Identity:

Working with the Montreal Science Centre exhibition developers and a committee of scientific advisers, Star Wars Identities has divided its study of identity into three major themes: the origins of the characters, the influences that shape them, and the choices they make during their life. Within these three themes, ten components of human identity are explored: species, genes, parents, and culture in Origins; mentors, friends, and marking events in Influences; and occupation, personality, and values in the final zone, Choices.

These components form the backbone of the exhibition, exploring the complex notion of identity both in the real world and in creative fiction. Original content throughout the exhibition will shed light on each of the components of identity; simultaneously, "making-of" featurettes explore the stories behind the development of many iconic Star Wars characters, explaining how they became who they are, and showing how different creative choices might have made them different characters altogether.

Kyra Bowling, Exhibits Manager at Lucasfilm Ltd., says "the Star Wars saga continues to captivate audiences who find connection to its richly diverse cast of wonderful characters. Star Wars provides a natural lens through which to explore the themes of personal identity and character. This innovative exhibition lets visitors of all ages investigate, in a fun and educational way, the factors and forces that help shape who we are as individuals."

A vast and exclusive collection of some 200 objects from the Lucasfilm Archives features props, models, costumes, and artwork from the Star Wars films. This rich collection spans the entire Star Wars canon, drawing from the classic (1977-83) and prequel (1999-2005) trilogies, as well as the animated feature The Clone Wars (2008) and the ongoing television series of the same name. Fan favourites like Darth Vader, R2-D2, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, Yoda, the Millennium Falcon and Anakin Skywalker's full-sized Podracer -- among others -- are sure to delight visitors of all generations.

An Interactive Quest:

Star Wars Identities will place the visitor at the centre of the exhibition experience with an interactive identity quest that spans the duration of the visit. Closely interwoven with the collection and the educational content, this unique interactive experience will use technology to help visitors of all ages create their own personal and original Star Wars identity by incorporating elements of their own identity with fictional elements. Visitors will then leave with their own unique character inspired by the Star Wars universe and with a deeper understanding of the exhibition's central theme.

A Team of Experts:

In order to develop the exhibition's scientific content, X3 Productions has collaborated with the Montreal Science Centre content experts to gather a team of specialists from a variety of scientific fields, including genetics, neuropsychology, health sciences, and psychology. Their knowledge and expertise have shaped the exhibition's structure, and their input has been essential in developing its scientific content and in ensuring that its investigation into identity is up to date and firmly rooted in the sciences.

A Cultural Touchstone:

The Star Wars movies have broken box office records and won countless awards over the decades, but it is in the public's imagination that the franchise has truly made its mark, enchanting audiences of all ages and establishing itself as a cultural touchstone all across the world. The stories continue to resonate today because of their universality: we identify with the characters of Star Wars, and we recognize ourselves in their journeys.

"This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the beloved characters of Star Wars," says Jacques-Andre Dupont, Executive Producer of X3 Productions. "We get a deeper understanding of their identities, and, at the same time, we get a deeper understanding of our own. The collection, the interactive components, and the scientific content work hand in hand here to create a seamless and exciting experience for our visitors. It's a character-driven adventure into identity."

Information and Ticket Sales:

Star Wars Identities will premiere at the Montreal Science Centre from April 19 through September 16, 2012. Tickets are on sale now! Jake Gyllenhaal To Join the Revenge Thriller MOTOR CITY

Jake Gyllenhaal might end up starring in a revenge thriller called Motor City. The actor is currently in negotiations with Dark Castle Entertainment and Warner Bros. to join the project. Gyllenhaal would be replacing Dominic Cooper, who dropped out of the project, and joining the previously cast Gary OldmanAmber Heard, and director Albert Hughes.

The movie is "about a small-time hood (Gyllenhaal) who is framed and sent to prison by a drug trafficker, only to relentlessly exact revenge years later to get back the woman he loves."

The last time we saw Gyllenhaal was in Source Code, and he has David Ayers’ cop drama End of Watch in the can. I think he's a solid actor that would be great in a movie like this, so I hope everything works out and he's officially cast in the movie.

Warner Bros. is set to bring us the movie adaptation of the upcoming graphic novel Bolivar. Bolivar is written and illustrated by Sean Rubin and is being published by Archaia Entertainment.

According to THR, "The graphic novel centers on a young girl named Sybil who moves to New York and finds out her neighbor is Bolivar, the last living dinosaur. Despite Sybil's persistent efforts, Bolivar refuses to befriend her. The dinosaur is somewhat of a recluse, tucked away from the world Sybil so desperately wants him to explore with her. He soon realizes how much she means to him and that he would risk everything for her."

This project came with a writer/director in Kealan O’Rourke. The film is expected to be an animated feature. The concept seems solid enough. Since the graphic novel hasn’t come out yet--it is due May 2013, the synopsis is all that we have to go off of. As always, we will give you more info as it is released.  Until then, let us know what you think.

Poster for Wes Anderson's MOONRISE KINGDOM

Above you'll find the poster for director Wes Anderson's upcoming film Moonrise Kingdom. I enjoy watching Anderson's films. They're enjoyably odd stories that I've always found entertaining. One thing I like most about his movies is the fact that everytime I watch them I seem to like them more. His latest film adventure follows a young boy and girl who decide to run away together and the madness of a town trying to find them.

The film has a great cast of actors that includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Jared Gilman, and Kara Hayward.  This is a must wtch for any fan of Anderson.

Here's a description of the movie:

Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, "Moonrise Kingdom" follows a young boy and girl falling in love. When they are moved to run away together, various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down – which might not be such a bad thing. Willis plays the town sheriff; Norton is cast as a camp leader; Murray and McDormand portray the young girl’s parents.

The movie comes out on May 25th, 2012. You can watch the trailer below in case you haven't seen it yet. Are you a fan of Anderson's style? What's your favorite film from the director?
