Official Trailer for BULLY

$

0

The Weinstein Company has released the official trailer to their documentary Bully, which the MPAA slapped with an R-rating for crude language basically because it shows the way kids talk these days. The Weinstein Company is currently in a battle to try to get a PG-13 rating, so that the film can be shown in schools to show people that bulling is a very real and very big problem.

To help overturn the R-rating there is a petition with over 200,000 signatures that will be hand delivered to the MPAA by 17-year old Katy Butler of Michigan. She is coming to LA to present the 26,000 page petition she organized on Wednesday. Hopefully that gets the MPAA's attention.

I hate bullying. I'll admit... I was bullied in school, and I've even been bullied in previous jobs that I've had. I have a daughter in Jr. High that has been bullied, and it's just a terrible thing that I wish we could put a stop to.

Here's the synopsis:

Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, The Bully Project is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of Americas bullying crisis. The Bully Project follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children. As teachers, administrators, kids and parents struggle to find answers, The Bully Project examines the dire consequences of bullying through the testimony of strong and courageous youth. Through the power of their stories, the film aims to be a catalyst for change in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children and society as a whole.

The doc will be released in theaters on March 30th, 2012. Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think.

Awesome New Trailer for BAD ASS Starring Danny Trejo

Here's a great new trailer for the film Bad Ass, which stars Danny Trejo as a Vietnam vet who gets fed up with the crime in the city he lives in, so he takes it upon himself to kick some ass and delivers justice one fist to the face at a time. Supposedly the movie is based on a true story. I've seen crazier things happen, and I'd like to believe it is true so I will, even though it might not be.

Here's the Synopsis:

Decorated Vietnam hero Frank Vega returns home only to get shunned by society leaving him without a job or his high school sweetheart. It's not until forty years later when an incident on a commuter bus (where he protects an elderly black man from a pair of skin heads) makes him a local hero where he's suddenly celebrated once again. But his good fortune suddenly turns for the worse when his best friend Klondike is murdered and the police aren't doing anything about it.

The movie will get a limited theatrical release on April 13th, 2012. Watch the damn trailer already. Do you think you could enjoy a movie about a senior citizen going on a rampage?

THE AVENGERS - German Trailer with New Footage!

$

Marvel has released a new trailer for The Avengers, and it's completely in German, so I have no idea what is being said. It's still a cool trailer to watch though! Most of it plays out like the previous trailer, but there's a couple new scenes to see. One of them is at the very end of the trailer, which we have a translation for below.

The more I see from this film the better it gets and the more excited I am to see it! The Avengers will be released worldwide on May 4th, 2012... that's not soon enough. Enjoy the new trailer!

Here's a translation of the two new scenes:

Extended Tony Stark Scene:

Tony: And following orders is obvious not my style.
Cap: And everyone knows that style is all you care about.
Tony: From all the people around here, who wears the most figure-hugging outfit?

End Scene with Tony:

Tony: I promise a stress-free environment. No suprises.
Banner: Ow!
Cap: Hey!
Tony: You really got it under control, don't you. Whats your secret? Relaxing Jazz, Bongo Drums?
Cap: Is everything like a joke to you?
Tony: If it's funny!

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig).

BOY SCOUTS VS. ZOMBIES To Get a Director

$

Tropic Thunder screenwriter Etan Cohen might end up directing a horror comedy for Paramount Pictures called Boy Scouts Vs. Zombies. He's currently in negotiations with the studio, and he most recently wrote the script for Men in Black III. Even though he's a screenwriter, he didn't write the script for the movie. It was actually written by Carrie Evans and Emi Mochizuki and it made the 2010 Black List of Hollywood's most-liked screenplays. Of course, Cohen will work on a new draft with Lona Williams (Drop Dead Gorgeous)

As the title obviously suggests, the film focuses on a boy scout troop that must save a group of girl scouts from a horde of zombies with designs on spoiling a camping trip.

Maybe I would have gone to Boy Scouts if they actually taught you zombie surviving skills. This has the potential to be an amazing movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Were you a Boy Scout growing up? Do you have the skills to take on and survive a zombie outbreak?

Scientists Decide Star Trek Warp Drive Obliterates Everything

$

Who would've thought the words "Warp speed Mr. Sulu" would prove so fatal to our universe. Geekologie reports that scientists who specialize in the study of sci-fi transportation (which is on the short list of awesome jobs for smart geeks) published a theory stating that utilization of the "warp drive" would only result in massive death and destruction.

...Space is not just an empty void between point A and point B... rather, it's full of particles that have mass (as well as some that do not.) What the research team -- led by Brendan McMonigal, Geraint Lewis, and Philip O'Byrne -- has found is that these particles can get "swept up" into the warp bubble [when traveling faster than light] and focused into regions before and behind the ship, as well as within the warp bubble itself.

When the Alcubierre-driven ship decelerates from superluminal speed, the particles its bubble has gathered are released in energetic outbursts. In the case of forward-facing particles the outburst can be very energetic -- enough to destroy anyone at the destination directly in front of the ship.

"Any people at the destination," the team's paper concludes, "would be gamma ray and high energy particle blasted into oblivion due to the extreme blueshifts for [forward] region particles."

Imagine the Enterprise crew rolling up to kick some ass for the first time only to find out they've indiscriminately kicked all asses in the vicinity! Good for crew survival ratio, bad for whomever they were saving!

Kind of puts a damper on your sci-fi space battles, right?

Andrew Stanton TED Talk on The Clues to a Great Story

$

Andrew Stanton's first live-action film, John Carter, will be released next week, and it will show us if he's got what it takes to make the jump from animation. Before John Carter he worked on several Pixar films such as Toy Story 1-3Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc. and Wall-E. The guy has proved he's talented and a great storyteller, and we'll soon find out if his style translates to live-action effectively.

The writer and director recently gave a presentation at the TED2012 Conference and talked about "The Clues to a Great Story." You can watch his presentation below, and I have to tell you it's worth it, he's fun to listen to.

He takes to the TED2012 stage and starts with a bang: telling a long-winded, accent-strewn, expletive-filled joke that promptly sets the crowd on fire. Storytelling, you see, is joke-telling. And now he continues to challenge himself to see if he can accord his own greatest storytelling commandment–”make me care”–by telling us his own life story … backwards.

Check it out and tell us what you think!

Here's a breakdown of what Stanton talked about that can be found on the TED Blog page:

2008 - After showing us a clip from Wall-E, Stanton says he used everything he had, wanting to experiment with the idea that storytelling without dialogue was the purest form of cinematic storytelling. That led to another realization: “We all want to work for our meal when we watch a movie; we just don’t want to know that we’re doing it.”

2002 - When Stanton worked with Bob Peterson on Finding Nemo, their unifying theory was 2+2. The twist; to make the audience put things together. “Don’t give them 4. Give them 2+2.” No, it’s not an exact science. Stories, he says, are not a widget. “Stories are inevitable if they’re good but they’re not predictable.”

2001 - Stanton took an acting seminar with Judith Weston and learned that all well-drawn characters have a spine. ”They have a dominant unconcsious goal that they’re striving for, an itch they can never scratch.” This was a huge moment for Stanton, who took this on as a dominant theme for his own storytelling.

1998 - Hooked on storytelling, he read everything he could, and found the phrase by William Archer: “Drama is anticipation mingled with uncertainty.” This incredibly insightful definition helped him to understand how to fuse short-term and long-term tensions in narrative.

1993 - The early days at Pixar were freeform. “We were a group of guys going on gut,” he says. “It’s interesting to see how that led us places that were actually pretty good.” Particularly given that successful animation at the time looked like nothing they were doing. But despite early hiccups, they stuck to their course. “Thank goodness we were too young, rebellious and contrarian,” to do otherwise, Stanton says.

1970 - When he was five, Stanton’s mother took him to see Bambi. Cue “aws” from the audience as we watch a beautiful clip of the classic animation. “I walked out of there wide-eyed with wonder,” remembers Stanton. “That’s what I think the secret sauce is. Wonder is honest, innocent, it can’t be artificially invoked.”

1969 - Yet there’s more. When he was four, Stanton recalls asking his father about two scars on his ankle. He told him he’d been born prematurely. “The doctor took a look at this yellow kid with black teeth and told my mother I wouldn’t live. I lived in the hospital for months. And I did live, and that made me special.” As to whether he believes that, he doesn’t know, but he does know he wanted to strive at being worthy of the second chance he was given. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what ultimately led him to speak here at TED2012 today.

CLOVERFIELD 2 Movie Update from Drew Goddard

I think I'm one of the few people that really didn't care for the movie Cloverfield. It's not that it was a bad story or that it lacked cool ideas. I was just never fully immersed in the film experience. For me, it was the way that the story was told and the way that it was shot. I never really cared if we got a sequel or not, but I know many of you did like the movie, so I thought you might want to read a little update on where Cloverfield 2 currently stands. STYD had a chance to talk to Drew Goddard, the screenwriter of the film, and here's what he said:

I'm in, I'm ready to do it. Someone call J.J. and tell him to get moving, but because Matt and J.J. and I have been fortunate enough to be busy, it's hard syncing our schedules up. We're all very passionate about returning to that world.

So basically nothing has even started yet, and there's no kind of inclination that it will. When asked about any ideas for the sequel he said,

If you asked each of us what we wanted to do, you'll get three different answers, which is how the first film was. The aesthetic of Cloverfield benefits from that.  Three voices pulling it.  Look, nothing would make me happier than to get the three of us in the room to get started. But you've got this Star Trek thing...

Abrams is currently engulfed in the world of the Star Fleet with Star Trek 2, and I'm sure he's already lining up some other directing projects to develop when he's done with it. As for Reeves, he's got a bunch of projects of his own that he's developing.

Did you like the first Cloverfield film, and are you interested in eventually seeing a sequel?

Apple head Tim Cook introduced the new iPad device, saying, "the iPad is the poster-child of the post-PC world.” This new iPad HD (no official name was revealed) is taking tablet technology to a whole new level, leaving all other tablet devices in the dust. The third iPad being released sounds freakin' incredible! It was officially announced today, and it includes a ton of great features including a "retina display," 4G LTE internet, as well as the addition of Apple's new virtual assistant Siri. It will be available on March 16th, and pre-orders start today.

The prices for the new iPad HD are as follows - $499, $599, and $699 for 16, 32, and 64GB. $629, $729, and $829 with 4G. Now here's a list of details about the new iPad HD:

  • "Retina display" Much higher definition that previous display. 264 pixels per inch, better than 1080p, according to Apple. Better color saturation. Color saturation improved by 44 percent. "Until you see it you can't understand how amazing it is... To this day no-one has yet matched that display technology." It's 2048 x 1536. That's 3.1 million pixels. "The most ever in a mobile device."
  • A5X processor is confirmed, which means quad-core graphics, which means amazing games.
  • iSight Camera: 5-megapixel backside illuminated sensor on the back, 5-element lens, IR filter, and ISP built into ?the A5X chip. 1080p Video capable with built-in stabilization.
  • Voice Dictation: This new iPad feature allows you to instantly record your voice, and yes, that means Siri.
  • 4G LTE capable: AT&T, Verizon, Rogers, Bell, and Telus will be LTE parnters. LTE speeds up to 73Mbps.
  • World 3G: According to Cook, whichever carrier you use, you can "roam anywhere? around the world."
  • Speed: New iPad now has 21Mbps HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA at 42Mbps, with LTE taking the cake at 73Mbps. "Performance is amazing and you're going to love using it on these new high-speed networks."
  • Battery: 10 hours of battery life still! 9 hours on 4G!

Cook also boasted that “We’ve sold almost 15.5 million iPads last quarter alone. We sold more iPads in the last quarter alone than any PC manufacturer sold in their entire line.”

Cook also said that the iPad is a "favorite for gamers," with many perfering it to consoles, which is going to be huge for the gaming industry. And the gaming on the iPad HD sounds like it going to be incredible. They showed a demo that apparently blew people away.

I can't wait to eventually get my hands on this! Will you be buying yourself an iPad HD?

Check out this great new promo image featuring Christian Bale as Batman in attack position from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. It's a cool full body shot of the caped crusader. The image is being used on Newsarama to promote the new DCComics.com.

The movie is set to hit theaters on on July 20th, 2012 and there's no doubt it will be one of the biggest movies of the year, but what movie do you think will make more money... The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers?

Here's the synopsis:

Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar(R) winner Christian Bale ("The Fighter") again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar(R) winner Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose"), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. V/H/S Found Footage Horror Anthology Gets Release Date

V/H/S was one of my favorite movies from Sundance. It's a great found footage horror film anthology, and Magnet Releasing just gave the film a release date of August 31st, 2012 for VOD and October 5th for theaters.

The film follows "a group of misfits hired to burglarise a house to find a rare VHS tape, only to find more found footage than they wanted to see." There are five VHS tapes that we watch throughout the course of the film, and they are pretty awesome. You can read about what they are about in my review for the film, which you can read here.

The movie had a great mix of different horror film genres such as slasher films, ghost stories, and urban legends. I'm a huge fan of horror movies, and I couldn't help but enjoy watching this entertainingly twisted flick. This will make a great movie to watch every year, and I intend to add it to my Halloween playlist.

Top 5 Predictions For Avengers Movie

$
0
0

May 4th seems too far away given the awesomeness of the latest trailer, but until then, we can only speculate on the awesome things we'll see in what looks like it could be the Superhero film to top all hero films... so speculate we shall! The following is a list of scenarios we see playing out in the The Avengers film! Some may seem obvious, others a little far-fetched... Feel free to add your own predictions below!

5. Loki/Avengers Team Up To Battle The Skrull?

The Skrull are a powerful warrior alien race and as strong as the Avengers may be, an army is an army. However, when you have two gods battling on your side the playing field could even out quite a bit. Perhaps it won't be a full-fledged team up, more likely a unwilling alliance for self preservation. I have no evidence for this really, just think it would only make sense.

4. An Avenger Dies.

"Something like this...except no hook hands."

My money is on The Hulk. The evidence? He's now on his third actor, there are no sequels planned for him, and you gotta make room for more Avengers. Plus it's Joss Whedon, he killed off Spike in Buffy! Then again he brought him back on Angel, so maybe just The Hulk is destroyed and Banner remains? Another possibility is Nick Fury. Samuel L. Jackson has a ton of projects coming up (12 to be exact), giving him little time to reprise his role. Anyone is fair game really, minus Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America as they all have movies scheduled for the future.

3. Will Hulk Speak?

In his cinematic history, Hulk has had very few lines other than grunts and roars. This is one of them.

I would love to see some more dialogue out of the big green guy in this film. Even if it's something lame, like "Hulk forgot to file Hulk's taxes." You never know.

2. A Tease For The New Batch Of Avengers

This one is all too obvious. We'll likely see Black Panther and I'm hoping Ant Man and The Wasp as they really got the shaft for casting on this one. Possible wild cards I could see is Wolverine, Luke Cage, The Beast, Vision, and possibly even Spider-man!

1. The next villain reveal.

I'm also assuming villains will be jam-packed in the next installment in the series. The big question is who will be the primary foe? My money is on Ultron (which is why I'm hoping we see Ant Man at the end) as he is one of the toughest foes for The Avengers to beat. He's a robotic creation by the team gone rogue. Given superhuman intelligence, he is able to adapt quickly and hack his way into other computer systems world wide. He would be perfect and my overall number one choice for the next Avengers villain.

Fair analysis? Got more to add? Post it below!

RESERVOIR DOGS Video Tribute

Reservoir Dogs was the first independent film I ever saw, and I remember being completely blown away by it. I think I was around 15 years old when I watched the movie on VHS. I watched it over at a friend's house, and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. I loved this film, and to this day, I still enjoy watching it. The film was released in 1992, and it took movies to a new level. The movie was not only incredibly cool, but at the time it seemed to break the rules of conventional storytelling.

This tribute includes footage for the film and interviews with people such as Scott Aukerman, Q. Allan Brocka, Edward Bunker, Kevin Eastman, F.X. Feeney, Richard Gladstein, Chris Hardwick, Monte Hellman, Michael Jace, Tad Lumpkin, Christopher McDonald, Drew McWeeny, Gregory Nicotero, Brett Ratner, Andrea Savage, Rob Schmidt, Julie Strain, SuicideGirls, Quentin Tarantino, Judy Tenuta, Steven Wright, and Ronnie Yeskel.

If you're a fan of Tarantino and this film, then this is a series of videos that you should watch. Do you remember the first time you watched Reservoir Dogs?

PROJECT X and JOURNEY 2 Getting Sequels

$
0
0

Project X and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island are getting sequels. Project X cost $12 million to make and then brought in over $21 million opening weekend. THR reports that Michael Bacall is writing a treatment. Bacall came up with the story concept and co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Drake.  He began writing a treatment for the sequel weeks before Project X opened. It is not known if that treatment will become the script. That decision will be in the hands of producers Todd Phillips and Joel Silver

At this time it is not known if the actors will return for a sequel or whether the studio has options on the stars. Warner Bros. learned their lesson from The Hangover, where they did not have options and were forced to pay a premium to make a sequel.

Journey 2 has killed it at the box office, making over $270 million worldwide. THR reports that a sequel is being fast-tracked to have the third movie in theaters in 2014. The film is planned as a 3D family adventure based on Jules Verne's writings. Brad Peyton and writers Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn have signed deals to return for another sequel. Deals have not been inked with any cast members, but producers Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson, and Charlotte Huggins will return.

Here is what Peyton had to say:

I grew up a fan of Verne, so I know a lot about the mythologies. Mysterious Island was one of eight or nine really seminal works. I know we've just scratched the surface of what we can do. This one's going to be a lot bigger. We're going to go to a completely different world. It's just going to be a bigger experience, and we're going to grow the mythology. Journey 2 was about rebooting a franchise; now it's about making the seminal work in the franchise.

I have yet to see Journey 2, and may wait for DVD. Project X was mindless fun. I could live vicariously through these teens, and watch as the party got out of hand. Did you see Project X or Journey 2? Are you interested in seeing sequels?

Pixar's TOY STORY Meets Kubrick's THE SHINING

$

Pixar's Toy Story has been hilariously mashed-up with Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The series of art is called Toy Shining, and these were all created by Kyle Lambert on his iPad. Here's a note from the artist expaining why he did it:

Earlier this year I began following Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3) on Twitter (@leeunkrich). As well as his journey to the Oscars with Toy Story 3, Lee often tweets about his passion for Stanley Kubrick and the movie The Shining which inspired him to pursue a career in filmmaking. Having seen both The Shining and Toy Story 3 for the first time recently myself, I thought it would be cool idea to mash the two movies together as a fun side project.

It started off with a few notes on a post-it describing how the two movies could be combined and quickly grew into a 25 panel storyboard. Once I had sketched each composition I set about painting the panels with my iPad using the Brushes app. The project took around 2 months to complete in my spare time from idea to the finished storyboard.

I think these turned out completely awesome. As a fan of both The Shining and Toy Story these images are just so cool to see. I would love to see an animated version of this set to actual audio from The Shining. That would be amazing!

Check out the collection below, and let us know what you think about it!

We recently shared three new photos from Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, and now we have a new photo of Helena Bonham Carter thanks to Comingsoon. Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and Gulliver McGrath also star in the film that arrives in theaters on May 11.

Here is the official synopsis:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Depp) has the world at his feet--or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis (Haley) and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

I have never watched the original BBC series, so I do not know much about the story. I do know that I like the idea of seeing a different take on vampires than glittery ones. What do you think of Burton's adaptation from what you have seen so far?
