New Banner for EDGE OF TOMORROW - The Invasion has Begun

new-banner-for-edge-of-tomorrow-the-invasion-has-begun

On June 6th we are going to get to see Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt kick some ass in their sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow. I really hope that all of these posters being unveiled are leading up the release of the trailer that premiered at WonderCon a couple weeks ago. That was the best trailer I've seen for this movie, and I've been anxiously waiting to share it with the rest of you when it's finally released. In the meantime here's a new banner for the film the was tweeted out with the following caption, "The invasion has begun."

Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

25 Movie Posters Recreated in MINECRAFT

Minecraft has served as an outlet for fans to pay tribute to some of their favorite movies, TV shows and video games. They recreate these things in the open world game, and I've seen some incredibly cool stuff. Today we have 25 movie posters that were created by Reddit user scottybomber, and this is what he had to say about them:

"We posted a few of these posters to Reddit a few months ago without titles. All are in-game screenshots, photoshop was only used for the titles and small tweaks (eg. more pixels in The Conjuring rope to make it more visible)."

As cool as it is to see other people use Minecraft to pay homage to the things that they love, it's not something that I could ever get into and do myself. It just seems like you'd have to be painstakingly patient, and that doesn't sound fun to me.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 - The Team Assembles in New Photo

the-expendables-3-the-team-assembles-in-new-photo

Lionsgate has released two new photos from The Expendables 3. One features the ultimate action hero team gathered together above, showing off all of their big guns. The other includes Wesley Snipes and Jason Statham comparing knives. If you enjoyed watching the first two Expendables movie, then I'm sure you're going to love the final film in the trilogy.

The ridiculous cast for the film also includes Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell, and even Kelsey Grammer.

Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The movie is set to be released on August 15th!

FAST AND FURIOUS 7 RC Car Chase Scene - Fan Made

fast-and-furious-7-rc-car-chase-scene-fan-made

As a tribute to Paul Walker and the Fast and the Furious films, YouTube user Vax Studio created this radical car chase scene using RC cars. This is a really fun adrenaline fueled scene that I think you'll all get a kick out of. It's filmed really well! I didn't think I'd get into it since I've already seen a few videos like this before, but it hooked me. The guys that made it did a great job! We've seen a couple videos like this already, and you can watch the Need For Speed one here and another one here if you want.

Warner Bros. Developing 9 DC Comics Movies, But What are They?

warner-bros-developing-9-dc-comics-movies-but-what-are-they

Yesterday we learned that Zack Snyder was officially set to direct Justice League for Warner Bros. It's something we all assumed would be the case, and it will be interesting to see how it develops. It's also safe to assume that the studio has quietly been developing some stand-alone comic book movies. That has now been confirmed by The Wall Street Journal who says they are currently developing nine of them. This is what the report says:

Warner has now entrusted its core superheroes to “Man of Steel” director Zack Snyder, who will helm “Superman vs. Batman” and then “Justice League.” It also has nine other movies based on DC comics in development.

The big question is... what nine films are they working on? An earlier report from the Wall Street Journal already said that Shazam, Metal Men, 100 Bullets, and Fables were currently in the works at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, so that’s four of the nine. The same article also made a note to say that a solo Wonder Woman film was not in the works, which is surprising. I thought for sure that's something they would want to do. Actress Gal Gadot is even signed on to make a Wonder Woman film eventually.

We also know that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is developing Sandman, and that Guillermo del Toro was at one point working on Justice League Dark. We just don't know if that is still on the table at the studio, but we know Del Toro was working hard on it. A movie based on the character Lobo has also long been rumored, along with Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter

There are so many other characters it's hard to tell what source material they will pull from, but it wouldn't be too far fetched to think that a rebooted solo Batman film and Green Lantern will eventually happen. The report also reconfirmed that the film and television universes will remain separate, and that digital publishing has become a major priority.

Are there any other DC Comics characters you think the studio is working on? What ones would you like to see on the big screen?

S.H.I.E.L.D. Sucks at Everything - Comedy Short

Captain America: The Winter Solider changed the whole face of the Marvel cinematic universe and it will never be the same now that S.H.I.E.L.D. has fallen. It still has yet to be seen what the ramifications of all this will be in the long run, but one thing that we've learned from all this is that S.H.I.E.L.D. really did kind of suck. Machinima ETC made a great comedy short that is based on that concept. It takes place after the traumatic events of Captain America 2, and the few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that still exist gather together for an update on where everything currently stands with the organization.

StarWars.com

Hey! We've got some official Star Wars: Episode VII casting news to share with you today! After all of the rumors, talk and speculation we now know who will be star in J.J. Abrams' highly anticipated film. So without future ado, here's the cast for Star Wars: Episode VII:

John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver (Girls), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Andy Serkis (LOTR), Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), and Max von Sydow (The Exorsist) will join the original stars of the sci-fi fantasy saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

The photo above features the Abrams surrounded by the cast, and this is what the director  had this to say in a statement:

"We are so excited to finally share the cast of 'Star Wars: Episode VII.' It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

We all knew the original cast would be back to reprise their roles, but it's so comforting to know that it's all set in stone. I can relax now. As for the new members of the cast… these are all great choices and fantastic actors. I seriously can't wait to finally see the story that the filmmakers are planning to tell come to life on the big screen!

The movie opens in theaters worldwide on December 18th, 2015.

Guillermo del Toro's THE STRAIN - Body Bags Spot and Poster

EW

FX continues their fun and creepy marketing campaign for Guillermo del Toro's highly anticipated vampire horror series, The Strain. You'll find a new poster above, and below is a promo spot called Body Bags. Not everyone in the bags seem to be "dead" though. I've enjoyed these little teasers that they've released for this.

The new show is based on the book series created by Del Toro who worked on writing it with author Chuck Hogan. It's a bioterror thriller about an outbreak in the U.S. of a virus that either kills those who are exposed to it or turns them into vampires. When the filmmaker came up with the idea for the story, he wanted to bring scary ass vampires back into the scene. None of this sparkly shit.

The tale is a high concept thriller that tells the story of “Dr. Ephraim Goodweather” (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City.  He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism.  As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The series is set to debut this summer, and I'm excited to see it!

Harry Potter Vs. Star Wars — Action Packed Short Video

This oddball short by RackRacka has no real plot other than Harry Potter fighting a Jedi/Sith from Star Wars. The short is full of wand versus lightsaber action with effects good enough to get the jokes across. I've watched the first 30 seconds of this video about 10 times trying to figure out why the fight even starts, and I think it's an argument over a cell phone charger. I won't ruin any of the jokes by getting into details here, but there are some layered movie references that are only catchable upon repeat watching.

The video is directed and edited by Danny & Michael Philippou, with lightsaber effects by their friend Eli of EMDS Productions. I forgot how I found this so... Source: The Internet.

Wildly Insane Concept Art for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

I can't wait to start seeing some actual footage from George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road. Over the last couple of years we've only seen a few photos from the set, and a couple of images of Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky. I'm so excited about this movie that I'll take whatever I can get, and today we have a great collection of wildly crazy concept art from the film that makes me wish we could see an insane Mad Max animated series. The collection of art includes some great character and vehicle designs. I love how savagely cool these designs are.

"Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived."

The movie will be released in theaters on May 15th, 2015. I hope we get to see some footage soon.

Jamie Chung and Maya Rudolph Join Marvel's BIG HERO 6

jamie-chung-cast-in-marvels-big-hero-6

It looks like Marvel and Disney Animation have cast Jamie Chung and Maya Rudolph to voice a couple of the characters in their upcoming animated feature film Big Hero 6. Chung has perviously starred in films such as Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch and the upcoming film Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and Rudolph has been in films such as Grown Ups and Bridesmaids.

The actresses NBC bio lists Big Hero 6 as one of her credits. This makes her the second confirmed cast member. The first was comedian TJ Miller. Chung is voicing Go Go Tomago, a hotheaded bike messenger who can turn herself into a ball of energy. There's not word on who  Rudolph is playing, but I imagine it will be be the character Honey Lemon. The character is described as "a Japanese superhero and member of the Big Hero 6, who has a power purse in which she has access to another, unknown dimension from which she can pull out all kinds of items."

This is seriously going to make for such a great movie. It's is being directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Mulan, The Emperor’s New Groove). Here's a previously released synopsis:

“Big Hero 6” features brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studio.

The stereoscopic 3D/CG film hits theaters on November 7th, 2014. This will be Marvels first big screen animated movie, and I'm really excited to see how it turns out!

Growing Up Geek - 1978 A Geek is Born

I've been writing for GeekTyrant for over six years now. It's been an amazingly fun and crazy adventure. Some of our readers have been with us from the beginning, others have jumped on board along the way which is so cool. As you know, I write a good amount of articles to keep you all informed on what is going on in the movie and geek world. I try to incorporate little things about my life in some of the articles I write so you all get a sense of who I am and where I'm coming from.

I thought it'd be fun though to start a new column on the site where you can get to know a little bit about me. It's a place where I can share some fun experiences and stories with you of what it was like to grow up as a geek. I'm doing this in hopes to give you a better idea of who the guy behind the website is. I also hope it sparks discussions. If you are so inclined, please feel free to share any experiences or stories about yourself in the comment section below.

I'm seriously grateful for all of you who come to GeekTyrant to get your geek on. It really means a lot to us, so thank you.

Now on with the show!

I thought I'd start from the beginning with this first post, and work my way up through the years in the posts to come. I was born June 25th 1978, and summer blockbuster hits were relatively a new thing. The first true summer blockbuster movie was Steven Spielberg's 1975 film Jaws, which later in life would become one of my favorite movies ever. My dad was in college and an aspiring actor, and my mom was a secretary. I was born into a set of parents that loved the movies. About a month after I was born they ditched me at grandmas house so they could go see John Carpenter's The Thing. When I asked may dad about that era, he said back then if you were a geek "They'd beat the hell out of ya." I'm not sure who "they" are, but I guess we've come a long way. These days it's actually cool to be a geek.

There's really nothing to say about being born, it kinda just happened. So I thought I'd just give a little rundown of what was going on in the month and year that I was born in starting with the movies that came out. So, in June of 78 we had The Cheap Detective with Peter Falk (I've never seen it); Damien: The Omen II (I've seen it, but I don't think 666 is a good sign to be born under!); Grease (Everyone loves Grease… almost); Jaws 2 (What a terrible sequel); Convoy (Whatever that is); and Heaven Can Wait (Hey! I've seen that Warren Beatty movie once). They aren't the greatest movies ever, but my favorite flick out of those choices would have to be Grease. I've included the trailers for these films below for you to watch. The trailer for Jaws 2 is 4 minutes long! I guess they didn't really have the regulations on how long trailers could be back then.

I went on to look up to see what was going on in the video game world, and found that the Taito Corporation released Tomohiro Nishikado's classic arcade game Space Invaders in Japan that June. The worldwide success of this game marked the beginning of the golden age of arcade video games. So I have that going for me! My dad says that him and his brother spent a lot of time and money playing this game when it was first released.

It's amazing to me how much the world has changed, but it's been a lot of fun growing up with those changes and witnessing the awesomeness that has come along with it. I was lucky enough to have family like my parents and my uncle to introduce me to so many awesome geeky things growing up. They really played such a huge part in making me the person I am today.

Again this is just kind of an introduction to a new column I'm going to try out, so stay tuned for more. In the mean time let us know what movies and video games were released the month and year that you were born?

New Photo of Scarlett Johansson in LUCY

Scarlett Johansson's upcoming sci-fi action film Lucy looks insanely cool. Today we bring you a new photo featuring the actress in a state where she's using 100% of her brain. The movie comes from La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson. From what I've seen in the trailer this movie looks like it could be one of his better films.

The story centers on a woman who is accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. She's forced to be a drug mule, and accidentally swallows her cargo, giving her some ultra extra strength and brain power. Besson talked about the character in a interview with USA Today saying,

"She's just someone who has access to the deepest part of her cerebral capacity. That we call humanity is like 10% of the brain, and she's going to reach 100%. So her travel through these experiences is really something. It isn't a documentary about the brain. It's a lot of fun. You have food for your heart and your brain at the same time."

The movie is set to be released on August 8th, and I can't wait to see it!

I've been really itching to make an infographic for GeekTyrant, so if you've got any ideas or suggestions tweet me @GeekTyrant on twitter.

Roland Emmerich to Direct Historical Adventure Film MAYA LORD

$

It appears that Roland Emmerich is trying to keep as busy as possible. With two films on his plate, Stonewall and the sequel to Independence Day, he is looking to future projects. Deadline released yesterday that the ever declining talent of Emmerich would like to take on the film adaptation of John Coe Robbins’ book Maya Lord. Here is their synopsis of the book:

Gonzalo -shipwrecked in a violent storm in 1511, he finds himself cast away on an unknown shore in the New World. A fierce tribe enslaves him and the other Spaniards in his small party. With little hope for escape, this brilliant and pragmatic adventurer searches for a way to advance in a strange new culture. Ix Zazil -the spirited and independent daughter of a powerful chieftain, she finds herself surprisingly drawn to the strange foreigner who has been thrust into her life from another world. Jeronimo -lost in the shipwreck with Gonzalo, this uncompromising priest rejects Maya ways, holds fast to his beliefs and remains a slave. Like his fellow survivor, he is convinced he is the better man for his choice. Based on actual people and events, this exotic historical novel follows these driven characters as they chart conflicting courses through a tumultuous world unlike anything they could ever have imagined.

This definitely fits into Emmerich’s wheelhouse. I know I sound bitter, and I am. It’s like Peanut butter Twix. That was pretty close to being the perfect candy, until they changed things up and added the chocolate cookie to it. Thus ruining everything! Just like Emmerich had a great thing going with Stargate and Independence Day. Then something changed, and things haven’t been the same ever since. Just like Twix, I find myself compelled to try again, ultimately being disappointed with the final product. More than likely I will see this movie. Do you think it will be worth it?

STAR WARS With Bad Sound Design

In this video the brilliant Star Wars sound design by Ben Burtt has been completely removed and replaced with vocal effects by Hudson Hongo. As kids I'm sure nearly every person on the planet picked up a stick or a lightsaber toy and made their own sound effects, this is the same idea but synced and edited into the original film.

I looked at his youtube page expecting lots of these videos but this is the only one he's done. I'd love to see Hongo do his "Bad Foley" for Jurassic Park, Tron, The Matrix, and Transformers. Thanks Laughing Squid for being the best non-squid based website with squid in it's name.

ASSASSIN'S CREED Movie Moves Forward with a Director

New Regency has slowly been moving forward with Ubisoft's big screen adaptation of Assassin's Creed that is set to star Michael Fassbender. They are currently in talks with Justin Kurzel to direct the film. Kurzel recently directed an adaptation of Macbeth, which starred Fassbender. The actor obviously enjoyed working with him, and I'm sure he's using his producing power to help him get the gig.

I have no idea how good of a director Kurzel is, He hasn't done much, and I'm not familiar with anything that he has made. The last thing we heard about the project was that writers Bill Collage and Adam Cooper (Accepted) were brought on to write a script that would weave together the tale for the freerunning assassin.

Even though the film has a director, it's been said that Ubisoft will maintain control of key elements of the movie's creative direction. I'm sure the studio will want to stay close to the story of the video game, which centers on a bartender who is captured by a secret corporation with ties to the Knights Templar, and learns his ancestors were trained assassins. He's then sent back in time to kick some ass and retrieve historical artifacts.

Other directors that were up for the job included Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and Garreth Evans (The Raid). Oh, how I wish Evans would have been the one to direct this movie. It's really sad that it won't happen, he could have done amazing things with Assassin's Creed. Hopefully Kurzel has what it takes to make this movie awesome.

Universal has signed JackassJohnny Knoxville to lead their Ferris Bueller-esque comedy, Sick Day. The story follows "a man who calls in sick to skip work, only to have his plans for the day go terribly awry. He falls into a series of disastrous encounters with his neighbors that may endanger his wife's chances for a job promotion."

I am not really expecting many surprises with this one, but I am sure it will be entertaining. I actually wouldn't mind calling in sick for work today to do something more fun. Hell, even if it led to a series of "disastrous encounters," at least I wasn't at work. My job is nothing but dealing with disastrous encounters!

The movie is being directed by Jeremy Garelick and will be produced by Brian Grazer and Kim Roth
