Baby Wolverine and Hulk Featured in THE INDESTRUCTIBLES Fan Art

Artist Luigi Monaldi created this hilarious fan art featuring a group of very mischievous looking baby comic book characters that include Wolverine, Hulk, and Sue Storm. The artist said it was inspired by the art of Skottie Young. I don't know what it is about seeing our favorite badass superheroes as babies and kids, but it's just amusing. I love their facial expressions and the fact that Wolverine is scraping his claws across a chalk board. He would do something like that.

22 JUMP STREET TV Spot - "Back Undercover"

Sony Pictures has released a new TV spot for 22 Jump Street featuring a few bits of funny new footage. I thought the first film was going to suck, but boy was I wrong. I was laughing all the way through it, and the upcoming sequel looks like it will be just as funny. The movie hits theaters on June 13th!

Creepy Vampire-Like Version of Frank Miller's DARK KNIGHT

Christian Ronchi's version of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight looks like a creepy vampire Batman. This version of the classic superhero is pretty terrifying, and he'd definitely scare the shit out of the criminals of Gotham. I imagine the people of the city would be scared to death to leave their homes with this thing out on the streets! He looks mean as hell.

FLASH GORDON Being Written By STAR TREK 3 Writers

Al Williamson Flash Gordon Spread.jpg

A new big screen adaptation of Flash Gordon has been in and out of development for years. Back in 2008 Sony Pictures was moving forward with the project and even had Breck Eisner attached to direct it. For one reason or another the project fell apart and never happened. It seems like there's been no movement since.

Now Film Divider is reporting that there's a fresh attempt to bring Flash Gordon to the big screen, and that Star Trek 3 writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay have been hired to pen the script. Nothing these two guys have written has made it to the big screen yet, but they did write a script for Bad Robot called Boilerplate, which hasn't been produced yet. Apparently these guys are supposed to be a couple of hot up-and-coming writers.

They’ve apparently developed a new take on Flash with producer Jon Davis and are currently in the process of shopping it around to studios. According to the report, the "pitch goes right back to the original Raymond comic strips and sidesteps any association with the movie, and even the serials." The idea, "is to reclaim Flash Gordon from his current reputation in the way that Tim Burton redirected the public conception of Batman."

The last time we saw Flash Gordon was in Seth MacFarlane's comedy Ted. The way they implemented the character into the movie, including the cameo from Flash’s alter-ego Sam J. Jones, were some of my favorite parts of the movie. I loved the original film, and all the crazy cheesiness that came along with it.

I think it would be really fun to see an updated version of Flash, so I hope this team of people developing the project can make it happen.

SON OF BATMAN — Damian Attacks Clip, 3 Images, WonderCon Premier Details

In the newest clip from Son of Batman, Damian Wayne attacks shrubbery (I'm not joking). The clip doesn't really get me excited for the movie. The blocking just really falls flat visually, but then again it's a fairly mundane scene. I fully expect the more action filled parts to be stronger.

They will be premiering Son of Batman at WonderCon on Friday, April 18th at 6pm in The Arena after the panel. The cast and crew in attendance will be Jason O'Mara (Batman), Sean Maher (Nightwing), Xander Berkeley (Langstrom), Stuart Allan (Damian) -- and filmmakers James Tucker (producer), Ethan Spaulding (director), Phil Bourassa (character designer), and Andrea Romano (dialogue director).

These panels are always a lot of fun, and being able to watch the movie after is just the cherry on top. Son of Batman comes to Blu-ray on May 6th. Wonder if there is a scene with Batman searching for a shrubbery (NI!).

Cool Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Action Movie Art by Craig Drake

We've got an awesome set of art for you to check out today that pays tribute to several classic films from the sci-fi, fantasy and action genres. The art comes from Craig Drake, and the pieces were inspired by films and TV shows such as Star Wars, Aliens, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lord of the Rings, Cowboy Bebop, Die Hard, and more. The artist currently has his art on display at the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, and it will be available to see through April 27th. I love his style, it's very reminiscent of the popular 1980s artist, Patrick Nagel. Thanks to /Film for the heads up!

Mark Millar's SUPERIOR Comic Book Picked Up by FOX

mark-millars-superior-comic-book-picked-up-by-fox

Since comic book writer Mark Millar is a consultant over at FOX it's no surprise that the studio has picked up the rights to his limited series comic book, Superior. It should also come as no surprise that Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn is producing the project. The two talents obviously enjoy working together. The are currently developing an adaptation of their comic, Secret Service

As far as the story for Superior goes, it "centers on a popular and athletic 12-year-old boy who loses his social life when he is stricken by multiple sclerosis. One night, an alien monkey grants the boy one wish and he chooses to become his favorite superhero, a Superman-like character named Superior. After relishing his new life as a hero, the boy discovers that the monkey is actually a demon from Hell and he must sell his soul if he is to remain the powerful hero -- or return to his original body."

The comic was published by Icon Comics between 2010 and 2012. I've never read it myself, but it sounds like it has the potential to be a great flick! The studio is currently out on the hunt for a writer to adapt it.

The Price of Being Superheroes Then & Now — Infographics

Here’s a fun series of infographics that break down the cost of being a superhero when these characters were first introduced and compares it to the expenses the characters’ current iterations would rack up today. The series was created last year for Mashable with artwork by Bob Al-Greene. We came across them on Emil Lendof’s Behance Gallery — Lendof worked on the text and graphics. Even if this series didn’t contain all the interesting stats that it does, I would still love the layout and designs. Al-Greene and his team did a fantastic job of arranging the classic character designs alongside the modern day look of the superheroes. I've also included textless versions of just the characters below the infographics.

Channing Tatum Met with Producers to Talk GAMBIT

In news that has the Internet in a tizzy, Channing Tatum has taken a meeting about playing Gambit, the drinking, gambling, thieving, womanizing X-Man from New Orleans. We know that producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been pushing for a standalone Gambit movie with Tatum in the lead for awhile, and Tatum has spoken publicly about how much he would love to play the character before. But with an official meeting, it sounds like things might be inching forward.

Gambit is definitely a fan favorite, but he hasn’t been used in any of the X-Men movies yet. We aren’t counting X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which he made a brief appearance played by Taylor Kitsch. I think we’ve all agreed to pretend that movie never happened, right? If the project moves forward, the plan is to make a standalone film about the character, and to make it on a smaller scale than most X-Men movies.

Tatum told an MTV reporter about the meeting before the MTV Movie Awards. Here’s the relevant quote:

I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. And I would love it. Gambit is really the only X-Man I’ve ever loved. I mean I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess from being down south – my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida – I don’t know. I just related to him. He’s just kind of suave… He’s the most un X-Men X-Man that’s ever been in X-Men. Other than maybe Wolverine, who’s like the anti-hero. He’s a thief. He’s not even a hero. He’s kind of walking the line of grey…He loves women and drinking and smoking and stuff so he’s just a cool guy who happens to have a moral center….I hope it [comes together]. You never know it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would die to play it. I’m already working on the accent. It’s crappy at the moment.

So he’s already working on the accent. It seems like he has his hopes up that this is going to happen. I am fairly immune to Tatum’s charms, but it would be interesting to see what he can bring to the character. And honestly, this seems like a no-brainer for Fox. Their other breakout X-Men star is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and he is quickly aging out of the role. Love him or think he looks like a thumb, Tatum is a big star, and if the studio can make a medium budget solo movie a hit, it would be easy enough to fold him into the larger X-Men universe. I would love to see a good caper film built around an X-Man. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this project come together fairly quickly.

Banksy's Latest Artwork Pokes Fun at British Intelligence Community

This is (allegedly) Banksy’s latest artwork. It is so far unconfirmed, but it is in the famed street artist’s style and seems to have something of his wit. The graffiti showed up on the side of a house in Cheltenham, England on Sunday morning. It shows three security agents spying on a phone booth (Look, you guys! It’s an actual phone booth! I thought they were extinct.), and what makes this piece so uniquely Banksy is that it is just down the street from the Government Communications Headquarters, which is the home of the UK’s entire intelligence apparatus.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION - 3 New Photos

Paramount Pictures has released three new photos from director Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction, and they all feature Mark Wahlberg... doing stuff. I'm really curious to see how this new Transformers movie turns out. So far I'm impressed by what I've seen, and I'm sure Bay is going to deliver yet another fun movie with lots of action and giant explosions. You can watch Walhlberg kick Decepticon ass on June 27th!

GODZILLA — Rising Sun Poster

Godzilla gets a Japanese "Rising Sun" poster. Some people find the use of a "Rising Sun" flag about as offensive as a Confederate flag because it was the flag Japan used during its World War 2 era expansion. Personally I don't care. Maybe as a Filipino-American I should, but to me, it's just a cool design. Last year the band Muse used the "Rising Sun" imagery and got a lot of flak for it, details here.

Godzilla, the culturally insensitive super monster, tramples people to death in theaters May 16th.

Honest Trailer for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street was one hell of crazy, vulgar ride, but it really was a great movie. The gang over at Screen Junkies have released an Honest Trailer that pokes fun at all of the things you either loved or despised about the movie.

Relive the excessive profanity, lengthy runtime, and bad behavior of Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, a film that had just about everything - except an Oscar for Leo.

As much as I liked this movie, it's a hard one to recommend to people because of how messed up it really is. It's offensive in so many ways!

BINARY DOMAIN - Late to the Party Review

0
0
binary-domain.jpg

Binary Domain is one of those names that sounds really good on paper, but like some other westernized names (Fuse, Haze, Conduit, etc), it can contribute to a title getting lost in the shuffle. February 28th, 2012 wasn’t exactly crowded with quality releases, though that month did offer both the much-loved Kingdoms of Amalur and the well-received Resident Evil Revelations, so not all bad. Binary Domain's obtuse title did not help it stand out whatsoever, and that's a shame. Here’s the bright side, though. PlayStation Plus users now have a second chance to experience the game, and it's something I couldn’t recommend more. Here are my full (though admittedly late) thoughts on Binary Domain.

The game centers around a Rust Crew, an elite task force meant to defend the Geneva Convention, which contains a clause that forbids the creation of what are referred to as Hollow Children. These are robots that are able to completely pass for human beings, a ruse aided by the fact that they themselves don’t even know they are robotic in nature. The game takes this concept and actually succeeds in delivering an effective narrative and conclusion, which honestly surprised me. Some of the characters, main guy Dan and Big Bo to be specific, can be ham-fisted with their dialogue, especially early on. Not the best first impression, mind you, but over time you do grow to enjoy all of the characters in a quasi-Expendables kind of way. All have something to contribute, and by the end of the game they have all had a chance to shine. The game weaves a few heavy themes in with its human vs robots premise, including alcoholism, abuse, racism, etc. Again, subtlety is at a minimum here, but it does succeed in getting its point across.

400131b0efc96e2b6034a0db6eff8a053b3019a3.jpg

One of the unique mechanics BD offers is the ability to chat with your teammates via an attached headset or mic. During battle you can issue commands of the general variety (hold, charge, cover me, etc) and during certain times your team members will offer up a battle strategy, which you can either approve or dismiss. All decisions of this nature affect trust amongst the group. Giving them the okay on tagging an area with a grenade or letting them charge in will raise how much said member trusts you. Likewise, accidentally tagging one of them in the leg will have a negative effect. These moments help you feel less like a lone wolf fighting with a bunch of AI and more like part of an actual squad. When in between battles you can also partake in conversations with your teammates, which also can either help or hurt your trust. As for the commands, you can still use them even without a mic, which is what I ended up doing, even when I had a bluetooth earpiece available. It was catching too much noise, and my crew kept responding to commands I never gave, which can lower your trust level quite quickly. Not using the mic was a bit of a bummer, but it didn’t hamper my experience too much once I got used to it.

It all comes together to form a nice camaraderie between you and your squad, but other than them not outright ignoring you when giving orders, there aren't any other tangible benefits to having a high trust rating. Sure, I felt terrible when I accidentally shot Rachel and felt just a bit bad when catching Charlie with a grenade, but that's my own guilt-ridden morality, not something that the game is actually punishing me for. Trust goes down, but after that nothing else of real consequence happens. It’s sad that the game most likely won’t get a sequel, as I would love to see the developers get another shot at fleshing these ideas out further.

As you go further along, you will gain access to shopping terminals that are spread around Tokyo. This is where you can buy upgrades to your team (nanomachines) as well as upgrades to your weapons. Dan, the one player you control, has four slots total. One that carries your pistol with unlimited ammo, one slot for grenades, and one that carries his upgradeable weapon, which is an assault rifle that can also fire a stunning pulse when charged up. The other slot is for weapons you either buy or pick up along the way, but those cannot be upgraded. I enjoyed playing around with the various nanomachine load outs for my team, and while the combinations are somewhat limited, you are able to tweak the squad to your method of combat. If you like charging in, you can make sure your squad is able to run right alongside you. Likewise, if you like being careful, then taking a different approach to the nanomachines will suit you best. Again, I would have truly enjoyed seeing this expanded upon in a sequel.

For the most part, the combat runs smoothly, though there are some small hiccups that surface from time to time. For instance, it seems one of Dan’s greatest enemies is not a robot or giant mech. No, no, his archenemy seems to be the ladder. Frequently I would attempt to scale ladders,  but the game would reject it on the first try and throw me right off. It would be fine the second time, but it happened enough to warrant a mention. Same thing with rolling from cover to cover. The fluidity of Gears of War was not present here, as sometimes when rolling up into cover the character would just roll and then stand back up, or when attempting to move to new cover from the side, as to avoid fire, he would instead vault over the cover, which would leave him completely exposed since stuck in a longer animation. Things like this aren't game breaking, but they do grate on the nerves over long play sessions. All that said, the actual gunplay is quite fun and left me wanting more. The weapons I used all felt powerful, including the shotgun, which is one of the better versions of the weapon I’ve seen in awhile.

The developers implemented a few unique combat tactics to keep it from just being a shooting gallery, and these were much appreciated. Things like being able to take out an opponent's legs to temporarily down them, which helps crowd control, were nice, but if you forget to finish the job you will get the bejesus scared out of you when one grabs your leg from around cover (trust me, it happened to me more than a few times). Also, if you’re able to score a headshot on an enemy, their head will come completely off, and because they can’t see they will become confused, leading them to shoot at their comrades if close. These little touches added just enough strategy to keep the combat from becoming boring. In fact, I always looked forward to gunfights, and enjoyed adapting to different strengths and weakness of my various shuffled squads.

binary-domain-02.jpg

The game does have a co-op and multiplayer mode, but with the game being a bit older, it wasn’t something that I was going to dive into. If you’re looking for an entertaining combat driven shooter that successfully blends a summer blockbuster type narrative with just a little something extra, then Binary Domain would well be worth your time. Sadly the game did not find an audience upon release, so any potential sequel was probably shelved long ago, and that's a shame. That should, however, not stop you from taking a trip through Tokyo with Dan, Faye, Cain, and company, as there are ample things to love about the game that Yakuza Team and Sega created. If you’re a PlayStation Plus user at the moment, then there is really no reason not to add this game to your download queue.

Touching Note to Fans Announcing Paul Walker's Brothers Will Help Complete FAST & FURIOUS 7

0
0

A few months ago, when the fate of James Wan’s Fast & Furious 7 was still uncertain after the tragic death of star Paul Walker in November, it was rumored that Universal was looking to reach out to Walker’s brother Cody to help complete the film. Production restarted earlier this month, and today the filmmakers released a statement to fans announcing that Cody and Walker’s other brother Caleb will both be filling in for Paul to help complete some unfinished action scenes. Our heart goes out to the cast and crew and the Walker family as they finish this difficult task. I’m sure all Fast & Furious fans will appreciate everyone's determination to honor and pay tribute to the late actor by completing this film. Here is the full release:

A Note to the Fans of FAST & FURIOUS

The FAST & FURIOUS saga is about family. The characters are connected by the bond of family, and it is how all of us who have worked together for more than thirteen years feel about each other. It certainly defines how we feel about our fans.

Our family experienced an unthinkable shock in November. We had to take time to grieve Paul, the brother we love and lost, and to figure out if we should move on with our film.

We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue. We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for FAST & FURIOUS 7, and it’s among the strongest work of his career.

We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our FAST family. Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too.

We are just under a year away from the release of FAST & FURIOUS 7, and this film is the most important we’ve ever done together. It will allow the character of Brian O’Conner to live on and let us celebrate Paul in his most defining role.

We wanted to take a moment to speak to our fans directly and thank you for the love and support you always show us as we resume our work.

Fast & Furious 7 is scheduled for release on April 10, 2015.

Incredibly Realistic CG Render of Robert De Niro

0
0

I don’t what’s more of a trip, seeing an eerily realistic 3D rendering of Robert De Niro, or just seeing a YOUNG(er) Robert De Niro. CG artist Hossein Diba did an amazing job with all of the textures and, of course, with the legendary actor’s signature grimacing mug. This makes me want to play a Robert De Niro video game. Not a game where you play as one of his many iconic characters, but a game where you play as De Niro himself, and you must act in several semi-unforgivable comedies with an “ok, he’s still got it” role peppered in every year. That would be a long and very accurate game.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly Team Up Again for BORDER GUARDS

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are teaming up once again with director Adam McKay for a new comedy called Border Guards. The three comedic talents have worked together before on films such as Talladega Nights and Step Brothers, and it will be great to see these two actors on the big screen together again.

According to Deadline, the story follows "two hapless but earnest friends who decide to give purpose to their lives by protecting America’s borders from illegal immigrants. In the process they find themselves accidentally stranded in Mexico without identification and must sneak back into the USA."

Ferrell and Reilly make a hilarious team, and it's not hard to imagine them going through a crazy kind of situation like this.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST — Amazing Final Trailer

FOX has released an incredibly stunning final trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's loaded with amazing new footage, and it gives us a better idea of the story that Bryan Singer is telling. There's nothing I can really say to convey how much I loved this trailer, but like all of the trailers that have been released for this movie, it gave me the goosebumps. The movie comes out on May 23rd (USA), and even though they say this is the last trailer, I'm sure we'll see at least one more. You're definitely going to enjoy this though!

Leonardo DiCaprio Teams with Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu for THE REVENANT

0
0
leonardo-dicaprio-2013-hdwallsize.jpg

Leonardo DiCaprio and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu have signed on to a period revenge thriller called The Revenant. It tells the story of “a gold-seeking fur trapper who is mauled by a bear. When the two men who are were supposed to take care of him rob him and leave him to die alone, the man wills himself to survive and goes on a 350 mile journey though the wilderness to survive.”

That sounds intense. And also like there are going to be a lot of close-ups of gross, bloody injuries. I know someone whose father survived a bear attack. He needed 1300 stitches, so many that the hospital ran out of the normal thread they use for stitches and had to use fishing line. Gross, right? I imagine this movie is going to be that kind of disgusting. But also, triumph of the human spirit and all that. I assume the revenge thriller part starts after he makes the 350 mile journey, so maybe they'll dispense with the bear attack gore quickly and move on to graphic, violent, revenge gore.

This project has been in development for years. Various producers and writers have been attached, and Innaritu has been working on it since at least 2011, meeting with Sean Penn as well as DiCaprio. The timing is finally right, and they should start shooting in September for a fall 2015 release. The current iteration of the script is by Mark L. Smith.
