Ivan Reitman Will No Longer Direct GHOSTBUSTERS 3

ivan-reitman-no-longer-directing-ghostbusters-3

Director Ivan Reitman is no longer attached to direct the long-awaited Ghostbusters 3. He directed the first two films, but has decided he will let a new director take on the new sequel. The studio is currently looking for that director, but they are still hoping to get the film into production in early 2015. Reitman will stay on a a producer.

With Reitman, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis not involved with the project, I don't think the movie should move forward. Sony Pictures should just leave well enough alone. The studio has been trying to get this movie made for years, and they've gone through a ton of scripts. The most recent one is from The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.

It seems like Ghostbusters 3 is going to be made whether we like it or not. I hope it surprises me and is better than I think it will be.

Peter Pan Cast in Warner Bros' PAN

Warner Bros. and director Joe Wright have cast the young Levi Miller (Terra Nova) to play Peter Pan in their movie Pan. The director spent a long time looking for the right actor to take on the role of Pan, and I guess this is the kid that matches his vision for the film. He will join Hugh Jackman who will play Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund who will play Hook, and Rooney Mara who is in talks to play Tiger Lily.

I find this following statement really interesting, "Wright is planning to create a world that is very international and multi-racial, effectively challenging audiences’ preconceived notions of Neverland and reimagining the environment." Why do I think that's interesting? Because everyone who's been cast in the movie so far is white. I don't see any multi-racialness going on at all yet.

The script for the film was written by Jason Fuchs, and the film will be a new take on the classic story. It's set during WWII and "follows an orphan who is kidnapped by pirates and brought to Neverland, where he discovers he’s destined to save the land from the pirate Blackbeard."

I know you all want to see more footage from Game of Thrones season 4, so you can thank HBO for this great new trailer! It's packed full of new footage that is sure to get the fans' adrenaline pumping. It also features the song “Devil Inside,” performed by London Grammar

Encouraged by the Red Wedding slaughter in the Riverlands that wiped out many of their Stark nemeses, the Lannisters’ hold on the Iron Throne remains intact … but can they survive their own egos, as well as new and ongoing threats from the south, north and east? While an unbowed Stannis Baratheon continues to rebuild his army in Dragonstone, a more immediate danger comes from the south, as Oberyn Martell, the Lannister-loathing “Red Viper of Dorne,” arrives at King’s Landing to attend Joffrey’s wedding to Margaery Tyrell, and perhaps act on an ulterior agenda. In the north, a depleted Night’s Watch seems overmatched against the inexorable Wall advances of Mance Rayder’s army of wildlings, which in turn is being trailed by an even more formidable foe: the undead White Walkers. As if that weren’t enough, Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by her menacing trio of dragons and army of Unsullied, is poised to liberate Meereen, the largest city in Slaver’s Bay, which could ultimately provide her with enough ships to sail to Westeros and reclaim the Iron Throne.

The series is set to premiere on April 6th, and I'm thinking that I need to throw a Game of Thrones party!

Trailer for Jeff Bridges' THE GIVER

I've been looking forward to getting our first real look at Jeff Bridges' big screen adaptation of The Giver. Today we have the first trailer for the movie, and I love what I see. It's pretty cool to see this story that I've imagined for so long brought to life. I think they nailed the tone of it perfectly. I swear that Bridges may have been born to play this role. The movie also stars Brenton Thwaites, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård, and even Taylor Swift. Everyone looks like they do a great job in their roles.

The story is set in a "colorless dystopian society that enforces Sameness and fears freedom. All memory of human history has been erased, emotion does not exist, and citizens' professions are chosen for them."

Thwaites is playing Jonas, the "community's Receiver of Memories who spends his days being mentored by the Giver (Bridges), who teaches him to confront and understand the lies that inform society. As Jonas comes to grips with living an unsheltered existence, he begins to acquire a taste for freedom and honesty, becoming an outcast in the process."

The movie will be released in theaters on August 15th.

Billy Dee Williams kicked off the 18th season of Dancing With The Stars by dancing to the theme of Star Wars with Stormtroopers, R2-D2, and more. This thing oozes nostalgia, but the most surprising thing here is realizing that Dancing With the Stars has actually been around for 18 seasons!? Anyway, enjoy dancing Lando!

Sofia Coppola to Direct THE LITTLE MERMAID

Universal Pictures is currently in negotiations with Sofia Coppola to direct their live-action adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale The Little Mermaid. The movie is currently being rewritten by Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands).

The story was published in 1837, but I know most of you are familiar with the Disney animated version. It is about a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince.

Coppola is a talented director who has brought us films such as Lost in Translation, Somewhere, The Bling Ring, and Marie Antoinette. The Little Mermaid would be her biggest studio movie to date, and I think she's a solid choice to develop this story into a film.

Steve Carell Set to Star in Inspiring True Story PRIORITY LIST

If you are into Steve Carell news, and I know you are, here is something to wet your whistle. It looks like Carell is stepping over the comedy line again and entering the world of the drama. Warner Bros. has recently acquired the rights to the memoirs of David Menasche, titled The Priority List: A Teacher’s Final Quest to Discover Life’s Greatest Lessons. Carell is set to produce and star in the film. Thanks to THR for the info. Here is their synopsis of the book:

In 2006, Menasche, then a Miami high school teacher, was told he only had a few months left to live after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He managed to extend his life via several surgeries and years of chemo but a seizure in 2012 ended his teaching career.

Menasche then decided to embark on a cross-country journey to reconnect with former students from his 15-year teaching career, come to terms with his illness and learn to live fully in the present.

We know Carell is a fantastic comedic actor, but I feel that he can hold his own as a dramatic actor. Check out Dan In Real Life and The Way Way Back and the trailer for Foxcatcher, and then you will see what I mean.

Until Next Time…

FIREFLY "I Want to Believe" Poster

This Firefly “I Want to Believe” Poster is a fun mashup of Fox Mulder's iconic office poster in The X-Files and Firefly.

Firefly and X-Files sort of go together. They were both broadcast on Fox. They're both about outer space. They both involve a big information coverup. And they both have very dedicated fans with some serious conviction for their shows who would love to see more of them. If you really want to believe, no power in the 'Verse can stop you.

X-Files just happened to last a hell of a lot longer than Firefly did. I'll always wonder what Firefly could have been had it not been cancelled. Here are the specs for the poster:

  • Firefly “I Want to Believe” Poster
  • Poster mashup of X-Files and Firefly iconography
  • Officially-licensed Firefly merchandise
  • Materials: Printed on 100-pound, satin-finish paper
  • Dimensions: 27″ x 40″ (one sheet size)

The poster is available at ThinkGeek for $19.99.

Michael Bay to Develop Science Adventure Film

Paramount Pictures has picked up a film for Michael Bay to produce and possibly direct. There's no title for it at this point, and all that's been revealed about the plot is that it's "a real science adventure thriller with an undersea component."

Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots, B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations) and Robbie Thompson (Supernatural) have been hired to write the script.

Bay is currently working on bringing us Transformers: Age of Extinction. If he takes on the directing duties of this new film, I'm sure it will be fun. Bay is great at creating eye-candy for the audience, but not much else. That's his only concern as a filmmaker… eye-candy.

Marvel released a couple of new TV spots for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and they both feature little bits of new footage that fans might want to see. I've been hearing so many great things about this movie that are getting me even more excited to watch it! I recently saw the first 10-minutes of the film which were so amazing! They were filled with great humor and lots of badass action. I can only imagine the whole film is going to be just as entertaining. The movie comes out on April 4th, and I couldn't be more ready!

Awesome Trailer for the Sci-Fi Thriller THE SIGNAL

This is the first trailer for a mind-bendingly awesome sci-fi indie film called The Signal. I saw this movie up at Sundance, and it was one of my favorite films at the festival this year. This is a movie I know a lot of you are going to really like. The movie was written and directed by William Eubank, and it stars Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Laurence Fishburne, Lin Shaye, Robert Longstreet, and Jeffrey Grover. Here's a brief synopsis:

Three college students on a road trip across the Southwest experience a detour: the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. The trio find themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area. Suddenly everything goes dark. When one of the students, Nic (Brenton Thwaites of "The Giver" and "Maleficent"), regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare.

Here's an excerpt from the review I wrote for it:

The film had plenty of fun twists and turns to keep the audience guessing about what was really going on. I had my theories while watching the movie, some of which were right. But, I didn't realize the level to where they would take it. I was impressed by what this movie delivered. It had drama, action, comedy, and really cool sci-fi elements. They did some fantastic and surprising stuff with the special effects as well. There's a lot of work and love that was put into this movie and it sure paid off.

You can read my full review of the film here. This is one of those movies that I'm excited to see again. I'll get that chance on June 13th when it's released in theaters!

Will CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 Center on Psychotic 1950s Cap?

$

will-captain-america-3-center-on-psychotic-1950s-cap

Marvel is already moving forward with Captain America 3 and sequel directors Anthony and Joe Russo will be back to bring it to us. It looks like Captain America: The Winter Soldier screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely know a little bit about where the third film will be headed, and in a recent interview with Den of Geek they threw out a couple of hints as to what the story might involve. As expected, it sounds like they will adapt another comic book story arc. Here's what McFeely had to say,

"Oh yeah, you can probably predict some of the threads we would like to pick up again that we’ve laid out there, and we always go back to the comics and dive back in and look at anything we’ve missed in the last few years that might be relevant."

Markus continued:

"We’ve definitely set out on a more realistic road in the Cap movies, you know. Even more grounded than in the other MCU movies. And so it kind of rules out Cap fighting the Dinosaur Man or something like that. There are some that aren’t gonna start and other ones that -- I mean there’s a couple we’re playing with right now that we really want to take elements from. Which we'll not reveal."

After he was pressed a little further he revealed this cool little tidbit,

"All I’m saying is psychotic 1950s Cap."

That definitely sounds like it will be interesting, and I will get into the details on that below. When they were asked if they approach adapting a comic story in the sense of a novel, taking the elements that will work on screen and keeping it faithful to the tone and the spirit McFeely answered,

"Exactly right! Like, you know, we kind of knew we’re not gonna use the Cosmic Cube. We’ve been there, we’ve done that. He’s not Russian exactly. He’s not a Soviet experiment."

That discussion then led into Red Skull and Markus added,

"We didn’t want to bring back the Skull so soon... Let alone have him inside the head of somebody else."

McFeely went on to say,

"There were just some things that would be much tougher to do on screen as they are in the comic. But yeah, it is a matter of being really respectful to the tone and the spirit of it without necessarily having to duplicate the exact details."

When asked about his Red Skull comment, and whether it was hint at the Captain America 3 villain Markus responded,

"(laughs) I only said that because I think it’s fairly clear he didn’t die in that first movie but [frick]ed off into Wonderland."

It's going to be really interesting to see where they take Captain America 3, especially after whatever happens in Avengers: Age of Ultron and the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe. It's also so damn exciting to watch unfold and think about though! It would be pretty cool to see Red Skull come back and a story centered around a psychotic 1950s Cap.

In case you're not familiar with that whole thing, Captain America was fighting communists in several comic books throughout the 1950s. This created continuity issues when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby brought Captain America into the 1960s by saying that he was frozen in ice during World War II.

The problem was basically ignored until 1972 when Steve Englehart decided to resolve it. He came up with a storyline revealing that a different man went through treatment to try and replicate the effects of Dr. Erskine’s super soldier serum on Steve Rogers. That man gained Captain America’s abilities, and takes on both the private and public personas of Captain America. He even legally changing his name to Steve Rogers even though his real name was William Burnside.

The treatment he underwent though had some side effects, and made him kind of crazy. He started attacking innocent people because of their race. He's eventually placed in suspended animation with his crazy sidekick, but eventually revived to try to kill the Falcon. He's also again revived again and brainwashed by a character named Doctor Faustus into becoming The Grand Director, who is the leader of a Neo-Nazi army.

You can read more about the character here, but it definitely sounds like it would make for a very interesting story arc.

Here's a prank that was played on a man who spent all day long assembling a 1200-piece LEGO Millennium Falcon set. After he went home for the day his friends took the thing apart piece by piece, put the pieces into their respective numbered bags and put them back in the box. This is a cruel prank, and the guy they played it on didn't know whether to laugh or get pissed off. I'm sure it was a little bit of both. On the bright side, he gets to have the fun or reassembling it all over again!

EARTH TO ECHO Theatrical Trailer with Alien Footage

Here is a full trailer for the great looking found footage sci-fi thriller Earth to Echo. This movie oozes 1980s Stephen Spielberg and Amblin film aspirations. One of our readers also suggested that the movie looks like a mix of Super 8 and Chronicle. It was directed by Dave Green and stars Teo Halm, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Reese Hartwig, and Ella Linnea Wahlestedt. It looks like it has the potential to be very fun and entertaining. I love sci-fi adventure movies like this.

After a construction project begins digging in their neighborhood, best friends Tuck, Munch and Alex inexplicably begin to receive strange, encoded messages on their cell phones. Convinced something bigger is going on, they go to their parents and the authorities. When everyone around them refuses to take the messages seriously, the three embark on a secret adventure to crack the code and follow it to its source. But taking matters into their own hands gets the trio in way over their heads when they discover a mysterious being from another world who desperately needs their help. The epic, suspenseful and exciting journey that follows will change all of their lives forever.

The movie will be released on July 2nd!

This LEGO robot is called CUBESTORMER 3 and it has smashed the Rubik's Cube speed record. It solved it in 3.253 seconds at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham, UK. This is 2 seconds faster than its Dad, CUBESTORMER 2. The previous record was 5.27 seconds. Here's how it works:

The robot employs an ARM-powered Samsung® Galaxy S4 smartphone to analyze the cube and instruct four robotic hands to do the manipulations. ARM9™ processors also power the eight LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 bricks which perform the motor sequencing and control.

The custom app developed for the smartphone uses the phone's camera to capture images of each face of the Rubik's Cube which it processes to determine the scrambled colors. The solution is found using an advanced two-phase algorithm that was originally developed for Speedcuber and then enhanced to make effective use of the dual-core ARM Cortex®-A9 based processor in a Samsung Galaxy SII smartphone used in CubeStormer II. Further optimizations were made to take advantage of the eight-core big.LITTLE™ processor configuration featuring four Cortex-A15 and four Cortex-A7 processors in the Galaxy S4.
