Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris is developing a feature project called Holland, Michigan, and it looks like Bryan Cranston will star as a serial killer. He joins Naomi Watts and Edgar Ramirez, who are also attached to the project.

The thriller was written by Andrew Sodroski, and the story is described as "a darkly humorous suburban thriller that stars Watts as a teacher who begins to suspect that her docile husband (Cranston) is a serial killer as she starts an affair with a co-worker (Ramirez) who has a violent past."

There's no doubt that Cranston will be awesome in the role. The info on the film came from an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit conducted with The Act of Killing team of Joshua Oppenheimer, Werner Herzog, and Morris.

Another SHREK Movie Will Eventually Happen

Just in case you were wondering if we would ever see another Shrek sequel from DreamWorks Animation, the answer is yes. The studio recently announced that they would be developing a Shrek attraction in London called Far Far Away Adventure.

CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg hinted in an interview with the Fox Business Network that another Shrek movie will eventually go into production, saying,

"We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We're not finished, and more importantly, neither is he."

Shrek has been an incredibly successful franchise for the studio, so of course they are going to want to milk it for all its worth. And Mike Meyers could always use another acting gig. So far the franchise has made over $3 billion dollars, and it's sure to make a lot more money as they continue to make films.

As for the Shrek attraction, it's scheduled to open in summer of 2015, and it is the first of six attractions that will be rolled out worldwide over the next nine years.

ZOMBIELAND Director to Take on OVERNIGHT for Disney

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is in talks with Disney to helm an adventure film called Overnight. The film is described as Home Alone in a toy store, and the story centers on "a father and son [who] win an inaugural sleepover in an amazing toy store–the same night thieves decide to rob it."

The last movie that Fleischer directed was Gangster Squad, which didn't do very well with critics. I was one of the few people that actually kind of enjoyed it. I think Fleisher is a talented director who has a knack for making fun movies. He also directed 30 Minutes or Less. Overnight sounds like it will be a great project for him to take on.

David Fincher in Talks to Direct Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs Biopic

Steve-Jobs.jpg

It looks like the creative team that brought us The Social Network will be teaming up again to make the Steve Jobs biopic currently in development at Sony Pictures. Aaron Sorkin is already attached to write the script for the film, and when that was announced I thought, "Wouldn't it be perfect if David Fincher came on to direct it as well?" Well, according to THR, Fincher is now in talks with the studio to bring the story of Jobs to life, and if anyone can deliver a perfect biopic about Jobs, it's these two.

The film is based on Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple co-founder. In a previous interview, Sorkin talked about his plan for the film, saying that it will consist entirely of three half-hour scenes. Each scene takes place in real-time, and they will depict the backstage events leading up to a major product launch. The product launches will be the original Mac, NeXT, and iPod, which are all perfect centerpieces. I'm not sure if that's still the plan, but I guess we'll see eventually.

I really hope that Fincher and Sony can work out a deal because this is my dream team of talent to bring this story to the big screen.

Here's a description of the book that the film will be based on:

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

You've got to watch this incredibly awesome fan-made animated short called Batman Vs. Terminator. The animation is really freakin' good, and I liked the tone, style, and designs of the characters. This is an insanely impressive short, and I want to see the story continue. The film was created by Mitchell Hammond, and here's the synopsis he gives:

30 years have passed since Bruce Wayne survived Skynet's nuclear blasts in August of '97. Iron demons now roam the planet, and without the requirement to defend the innocent against crime and injustice, Wayne has seeked refuge in the bomb shelter that saved his life; the Batcave.

Having scavenged the wasteland for resources, he discovers the radio of a dead soldier. There is static over a frequency. Flesh and blood is rising up to the west. With The Stinger; a riot control vehicular unit built before the apocalypse along with a refitted bomb blast vest, Batman makes his way across what remains of the United States to join forces with the man determined to neutralize the electronic menace - John Conner.

The SyFy Channel has cancelled their TV series Being Human, and the current (fourth) season will be its last. The series finale will air on April 7th. I loved watching this show, and it's really a shame that they are canceling it. I personally think it's one of the best shows that they have right now, so the cancelation doesn't make sense to me. This is what the network had to say in a statement,

“Showrunner Anna Fricke and the talented producers, writers, cast and crew have done an amazing job bringing this show to life over the past four seasons and we sincerely thank them and the series’ production company Muse Entertainment for their hard work. They’ve saved the best for last with the final six episodes that revisit the story’s beginning, leading to a not-to-be-missed send-off for Aidan, Sally, Josh and Nora.”

Below you'll find a thank you message from the cast. I'm kind of sad.

The Conjuring is one of the best horror films I've seen in a long time. I loved what James Wan did with it, and the movie actually scared me. Shortly after the film was released New Line and Warner Bros. announced The Conjuring 2, and now they've given it a release date of October 23rd, 2015.

There's no official plot information for the sequel, but Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will be reprising their roles. Here's one of the of the possible storylines that may have leaked.

"The case file they’re looking at occurs in the late ’70s and centers on two sisters in Enfield, England, who were allegedly possessed. Warren said she personally saw them levitate and even saw one of the sister dematerialize in front of her only to be found 20 minutes later stuffed into an over sized fuse box, contorted in such an unnatural way that they couldn’t have replicated it if they tried. She also said that the demon spoke directly to her husband on many occasions. Warren cited this case as one of the most terrifying experiences of her career.”

I really hope that Wan comes back to direct the sequel, but if he doesn't I hope they bring on someone who has what it takes to make an equally amazing horror film.

10 Actors Who Auditioned for the Hero But Were Cast as the Villain

$

A strong antagonist makes for the most compelling stories. Especially in the world of superpowered heroes, a villain needs to work on many different levels or the movie falls flat. Here are 10 actors who were up for the role of a hero in a movie or television series, but were ultimately cast as the villain. With the exception of two entries on this list, all of the actors auditioned and or screen-tested for their respective parts. Though they didn’t get the part they initially wanted, they got the part they deserved, and gave audiences performances to remember.

Tom Hiddleston - Thor (2011)

With three films as the Asgardian trickster Loki under his belt, it’s hard to imagine Tom Hiddleston as any other character in the Marvel universe. However, before donning the golden horns, the actor originally auditioned for…

…Thor. Chris Hemsworth would ultimately land the role of the God of Thunder, beating out a long list of actors that also included his brother Liam Hemsworth. In the video below, producer Craig Kyle explains how Hiddleston’s auditions went.

“At first Tom came in for Thor. He trained. He came in. He was ripped. He did a tremendous job, but he wasn’t Thor.”

The video also features footage from Hiddleston’s screen-tests and includes interviews with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Natalie Portman talking about the importance of Hiddleston’s performance as Loki. Just for fun, I’ve also included a video with Hiddleston doing an impression of Hemsworth had he been cast as Loki — mind-bending, I know.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse - Kick-Ass (2010)

After his breakout but potentially pigeonholing role as McLovin in Superbad, Christopher Mintz-Plasse was happy to receive the script for the adaptation of the comic Kick-Ass.

“I’ve never done anything action,” he explained to the Examiner. “I don’t look like I shouldn’t do anything action-oriented. So it was a great honor that they sent me the script, and then I realized that I’m playing a kid who should not be doing action in a movie, and he has no superpowers or anything.”

But before landing the role of the villain Red Mist, Mintz-Plasse auditioned for the role of…

…Dave Lizewski, a.k.a Kick-Ass. Mintz-Plasse wasn’t just better suited for the villainous character that would evolve into the main antagonist in the 2013 sequel, apparently the actor’s audition as Kick-Ass didn't go very well. He explained,

“Yeah, I read for the role of Kick-Ass, and [director Matthew Vaughn] hated it. He hated everything I did in the audition, but he gave me the role of Red Mist.”

After an exhaustive search that nearly delayed the movie 6 months, Aaron Taylor-Johnson won the role of Kick-Ass. The British actor did such a convincing American accent in his audition that when he began speaking in his normal voice the director didn't believe he was from England. In the video below, Vaughn talks about mistaking Taylor-Johnson for an American, and then spends the rest of the video heckling Mintz-Plasse.

Sam Rockwell - Iron Man 2 (2010)

One of the two villains in Iron Man 2 was played by Sam Rockwell. His character Justin Hammer, a billionaire weapons dealer, draws many parallels to the character he was originally considered for in the first movie…

…Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. It’s well known that director Jon Favreau had to fight to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the title role of his 2008 film Iron Man. But Favreau also had a shortlist of actors he was also considering, and Rockwell — whom Favreau worked with on Made — was on that list. The director explained to the LA Times,

"He was one of the actors I was looking at for Tony Stark. There was some things he would bring to the role that would have been great. Sam is very charismatic and when I was looking at the character there was a list and he had a spot on it, which might have surprised some people. Robert surprised some people, too, though, and now he is Tony Stark, he owns that role. Sam would have come up with interesting and different things."

Depending on when you read this, this could be a SPOILER, but Rockwell recently reprised his role as Justin Hammer for the Marvel One Shot All Hail the King, which is attached to the Thor: The Dark World blu-ray.

Alexander Skarsgård - True Blood (2008-)

Before being cast as the over 1,000 year-old vampire Eric Northman, the bad boy in the True Blood love triangle, Alexander Skarsgård auditioned for the part of...

…Bill Compton. Stephen Moyer would go on to be cast as Bill on the HBO series.

“They weren’t auditioning for other characters, they were only auditioning for Bill,” Skarsgård told GQ. “So you’d have to ask [creator Alan Ball] but I’m pretty sure that he didn’t have Bill in mind when he brought me in to read. Eric shows up later, he’s not in the pilot. They were auditioning for the pilot. So I’m pretty sure Alan already knew that I was better for Eric than Bill. It wasn’t really a case of me and Stephen for Bill. I think Alan was just scanning the market and meeting actors and everyone read for Bill. But of course I couldn’t play him. I’m definitely not right for Bill.”

Ball recalls Skarsgård's audition, telling Details,

“Alex wasn't quite right for Bill, but I remember that he was giant and also beautiful. So when it came time to cast Eric, I thought of him.”

Cillian Murphy - Batman Begins (2005)

Jonathan Crane is the only villain to appear in every installment of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, and one of only five characters to appear in all three films — alongside Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Lucius Fox. But before Cillian Murphy was cast as Crane, a.k.a. the Scarecrow, in Batman Begins, the Irish actor screen-tested for the role of…

...Bruce Wayne/Batman himself. Christian Bale was the first actor Nolan met with about the project, and he would eventually go on to play the Caped Crusader. But the director apparently met with “every young actor in town” while Bale went off and did another movie. All of the actors who screen-tested shot scenes as both Bruce Wayne and Batman. The video below features footage of Bale, Eion Bailey, and Murphy testing for the character wearing Val Kilmer’s Batsuit from Batman Forever. Strictly as a favor to the casting director, Amy Adams (who would of course go one to play Lois Lane in Man of Steel) did the tests opposite the actors.

Here’s what Nolan had to say about Murphy’s screen-test:

“We also had Cillian Murphy screen-test for Batman. He wasn’t right for that part in the way that Christian was. But the performance was incredible and everybody took huge notice of it while we were shooting it and while we watched the tests. I then was able to go to the studio and ask to put him in as Crane, as Scarecrow.”

Apparently the director was particularly entranced by the actor’s piercing blue eyes. Nolan told Spin,

"He has the most extraordinary eyes, and I kept trying to invent excuses for him to take his glasses off in close-ups."

Rachel McAdams - Mean Girls (2004)

In the Tina Fey-scripted comedy Mean Girls, Rachel McAdams shined as Regina George, the leader of The Plastics. But McAdams initially tested for the lead role of…

…Cady Heron, which eventually went to Lindsay Lohan. Oddly enough, Mean Girls was originally set up with Lohan as the villain, but after the success of her and director Mark Waters’ remake of Freaky Friday, they scrapped those plans. Waters told Vulture,

“[Freaky Friday] was a much bigger hit than we expected it to be. Sherry Lansing, who was heading Paramount at the time, told us, 'We have to have Lindsay play the lead in Mean Girls. It's just not going to work having her play the villain, because she now has an audience that won't accept that.'"

McAdams’ age — she was around 25 years old when she auditioned for the role of a high schooler  — both lost her the role of Cady and was a deciding factor for her landing Regina. Waters explained,

"I remember watching her do the scene, and after it was over, I told her, 'I think you're a movie star, but you're way too old for this character. You just aren't going to be able to play the ingenue.' And she said, 'No, I understand, I get it.'"

"When Lindsay was acting with Rachel, she got very shy, because Rachel was older and a very accomplished actress. She'd come in the room and not talk to Lindsay -- she was very focused. Lindsay kind of got nervous around her, and I thought that, more than anything, was going to be the deciding factor, the fact that she affected Lindsay in that way."

Amanda Seyfried also tested for Regina, but her take on the character was somehow "more frightening, but oddly, less intimidating." Seyfried would go on to be cast as The Plastics' ditziest member, Karen.

James Franco - Spider-Man (2002)

James Franco’s arc as Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy would eventually see the character emerge as an antagonist. But prior to being cast as Osborn in the first film, Franco screen tested for the role of…

…Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire would go on to land the coveted role, now played by Andrew Garfield in Marc Webb’s reboot of the series.

In an interview with Movies.com, Franco explained how extensive his auditions were, and how Raimi offered him the part of Harry.

“People bring up the fact that I auditioned for Peter Parker and I tested, and it was huge test. It must have been thousands of dollars just for this test. There were cranes and sets and they kept me waiting about six weeks. And then Tobey got the role and…I mean nobody believes when I say that I think he’s perfect for the role. I think he has done a better job than I would do in that role. But after the test, after Tobey got it, I guess Sam [Raimi] and I got along well enough that he wanted me in the movie. And as far as I know he didn’t audition anybody else for Harry. He just called me up and asked me if I wanted to play that role.”

Clancy Brown - Superman (1996)

Since Superman the Animated Series, Clancy Brown has become the quintessential Lex Luthor, voicing the character in countless other DC animated series, films, and video games. Before landing the role of the Metropolis Mogul, Brown auditioned for…

…Superman, a.k.a Clark Kent. After the audition, Bruce Timm felt Brown’s menacing yet charming voice would be better suited for Lex Luthor. Wings star Tim Daly would go on to voice Superman/Clark Kent instead.

In the animated series The Batman, Brown also voiced the villains Mr. Freeze and Bane in addition to crossover appearances as Lex. It is also interesting to note that Daly’s son, Sam Daly, would also go on to play Superman, voicing the character in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

Lee Pace - Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

The only glimpse we’ve gotten so far of Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser is the split-second shot in the trailer of him choking Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). Before Pace was cast as the primary antagonist in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, he and a long list of actors all auditioned for…

Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star Lord. Along with Pace, other notable actors like Joel Edgerton, Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden, Jim Sturgess, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Aaron Paul, Michael Rosenbaum, Zachary Levi, and John Krasinski were all up for the part of Quill. Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt would emerge as the studio’s choice to play the Han Solo-esque outlaw who will serve as the Tony Stark-type anchor of Marvel’s cosmic universe.

Pace’s diverse list of credits likely led to him being chosen for Ronan the Accuser, whom the actor has described as “f***ing psycho!"  and "a real monster.”

Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight (2008)

Last, but certainly not least, is Heath Ledger’s remarkable portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. The actor posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, marking the first time a comic-book movie received an Oscar for achievement in acting. Along with Chrisitan Bale, Cillian Murphy, and many others, Nolan initially approached Ledger to discuss playing…

…Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman in Batman Begins. Ledger took the meeting, but immediately told the director that he wasn’t interested. Nolan explained in a Q&A for the Film Society of Lincoln Center,

“He was quite gracious about it, but he said, 'I would never take a part in a superhero film.' "

After the release of Batman Begins, Ledger changed his tune and actively pursued and signed onto the role of the Joker months before there was an actual screenplay.

“I explained to him what I wanted to do with Batman Begins,” Nolan said, “and I think maybe he felt I achieved it.”

Below is video of Ledger’s family accepting the Oscar on behalf of the late actor

A month ago it was reported that Girls actor Adam Driver was up for a role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. There weren't any specific details given at the time, but today we've learned that he's close to signing a deal in which he would play the main villain in the story. Variety reports that  the character "is said to be in the vein of iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader." Driver definitely has the look of a villain, and he might be the first official character in the new trilogy to be announced. Apparently he was up against Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving for the role. Those are both amazing actors, so Driver must have brought something pretty awesome and dark to the character that the others didn't.

The film is scheduled to start shooting at London’s Pinewood Studios in April, and it will be released in theaters on December 18th, 2015.

Kevin Feige Discusses DOCTOR STRANGE Rumors

One of the most anticipated officially announced Marvel movies is Doctor Strange. Over the years we've heard lot of casting rumors, and it was recently reported that the studio is looking at directors to bring the sorcerer supreme to the screen. During a recent interview with IGN, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed some of these rumors and also talked about the reaction to the the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer.

He started off by talking about the recent news of the directors saying,

"Well, that article was true that we're meeting a lot of people now. That article was not true about who we're meeting or what level anybody is. But we're actively looking… We always look at a wide range of people with a wide range of backgrounds. There's only one criteria: do something that we think is really cool. [Laughs] That's about it."

As for the casting rumors, there have been a lot of them, but Feige was specifically asked if they reached out to Johnny Depp, which is a rumor I haven't heard in a very long time. This was his reply,

"No, no. When you have a project that's been around as long as Doctor Strange, there is sometimes, "Oh, I've met with Stan about this! Or I did that!" So Strange is one of those projects that predates me by a long shot. Obviously, the character does, but even in its cinematic brewing. So there's a lot of things that have happened before me, and I've been here 14 years. So that's a long time ago. I don't know if that happened then."

I'm more curious to know if Joseph Gordon-Levitt is still in the running. When asked if they are actively looking for an actor to play the character, he said,

"You know, I would say that we're pretty transparent, right? Doctor Strange would be our -- well, depending on when we make it, it could be our 13th, 14th, 15th movie, right? I think if you're looking to track our decision-making and how we've done things, we have a pretty wide track record now where you can sort of see. So, no, a movie star is not required, but that doesn't mean a movie star wouldn't be great. It just depends."

The conversation then moved on to Guardians of the Galaxy and the positive reaction of the trailer,

"Well, I was very pleased with it, because it's still early days for us, as the movie is coalescing and formulating itself in the cutting room, but there are a few things that we would be locked into: the cast, their looks, our use of music and our very unique tone. The fact that that's what that teaser is about and that's what people are embracing, there are a lot of happy people in the offices, that people are into this."

That's all they really talked about. All I can say is that I'm really excited about what Marvel is going to do with Doctor Strange. This is one of my favorite Marvel characters, so I'm hoping it turns out to be one of Marvel's better films.

New Director in Talks for Stephen King's THE STAND

Over the years the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand has passed through the hands of directors Ben Affleck (Argo) and Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart). For one reason or another things didn't work out with them. Now Warner Bros. is in talks with a director by the name of Josh Boone, who directed a great little film called Stuck in Love that I recently watched on Netflix. The Stand would be a very different project for the director, but if he thinks he has a good vision for the story, then I'm excited to see it.

According to The Wrap, the studio plans to adapt the epic novel of good versus evil into one R-rated film. I don't know how they plan to tell this story in one movie, but it will be interesting to see them try. I think it needs to be a full on trilogy, but maybe that's just me.

The Stand is one of my favorite books from King, and the story chronicles "an epic battle between good and evil after the American population is all but wiped out by a deadly virus." It focuses on a group of survivors who fight against an Antichrist-like figure named Randall Flagg.

In 1994 it was adapted into a great TV miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe. If you haven't seen it, try to find it and check it out.

The next movie that we'll see from Boone is The Fault In Our Stars, which stars Shailene Woodley.

Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix Inc. today announced that Marvel’s landmark live-action television series, [Newyork] which will bring Marvel’s ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ characters to Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will principally film in New York State. Produced by Marvel Television, in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking series is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action television storytelling and represents the largest film or television production project commitment in New York State history.

Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

“New York is where the entertainment industry started, and this unprecedented commitment from Disney and Marvel is further evidence that we’re bringing it back bigger and better than ever before,” said Governor Cuomo. “And when the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses. The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York’s superheroes home where they belong – along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business.”

“Since 2008 Disney has directly contributed almost half a billion dollars to New York’s economy through television and film production, along with approximately 9,000 jobs for New Yorkers,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company. “The Governor’s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location, opening the door for even greater economic investment and job creation for New Yorkers. Our Marvel series for Netflix will inject millions directly into the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs.”

“We thank the Governor and the great state of New York for helping us create the ultimate backdrop to this epic series. Setting our production in New York City truly underscores the authenticity and excitement we plan to bring to The Defenders and their ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ stories,” said Alan Fine, President, Marvel Entertainment.

Last November, Disney and Netflix announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs totaling 52 one-hour episodes culminating in a four to eight episode mini-series programming event. Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking viewers deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a mini-series event in which the Marvel characters from the first four series team up as “The Defenders,” much like “The Avengers.”

This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm.

“The Defenders are classic New York characters; smart, resourceful and tough enough to always stand up for what’s right,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “We’re delighted they’re coming to life on their home turf thanks to Governor Cuomo and his team.”

When Governor Cuomo took office in 2011, he made the attraction of the film and television production and post-production industries, and jobs and the economic impact they bring with them, a key part of his overall strategy to grow New York State’s economy. Since that time, he has signed into law several important changes to both programs to make New York more competitive in this global marketplace, and the results have been significant. Both programs enjoyed record-breaking years in 2013, bringing billions of dollars in new spending and thousands of jobs into the Empire State. The stability provided by multiyear funding has particularly encouraged the development of television series production work, like the new Marvel series, as well as long term investments in infrastructure, all of which creates thousands of jobs directly and indirectly related to the actual productions themselves.

During calendar year 2013, applications for 183 film productions were submitted that included 124 films, 33 television programs and 26 pilots. These projects will:

· Generate a direct spend of $2.11 billion in NYS;

· Collect a projected $477 million in credits; and

· Hire an estimated 128,165 actors and crew for the 183 projects submitted.

John Ford, President, International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 52 said, “The men and women of the IATSE look forward to participating in this ground breaking endeavor. Thanks to the vision of Governor Cuomo and the Legislature, the long term funding of the production incentives gives employers the comfort they need to invest in these new avenues of entertainment, which will provide thousands of new jobs with good wages and benefits.”

Thomas J. O’Donnell, President Teamsters Local 817 said, “Theatrical Teamsters Local 817 is thrilled that Marvel’s newest television series will be filmed in New York. This long-term commitment is an incredible accomplishment that will bring not just jobs, but also stability to our members work and family lives.”
