penny-dreadful-production-blog-3-making-a-horror-series.jpg

Showtime has released another production blog for their new horror series, Penny Dreadful. It gives us a sneak peek into the pre-production process with members of the Penny Dreadful team, including director Juan Antonio Bayona, who worked on episodes 1 and 2.

The series was created by the team that brought us Skyfall, director Sam Mendes and John Logan. This seriously looks like it's going to be a great supernatural thriller that brings to life some of literature's most famously terrifying characters such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula.

I think the series is going to be awesome, so of course I'm looking forward to it.

Zach Braff's Kickstarted film Wish I Was Here is set to premiere at Sundance this month. In anticipation of its release we have a poster to share with you. This is Braff's second directorial effort, and it also stars Josh Gad, Mandy Patinkin, Ashley Greene, Donald Faison, and Jim Parsons. The GeekTyrant crew is up at the film festival, and we'll let you know if the movie is worth seeing or not. Here's the synopsis:

“Wish I Was Here” is the story of Aidan Bloom (played by Zach Braff), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a little kid.

When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (ages 5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them.

The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn’t find.

Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve is set to direct a big screen adaptation of a short story called "The Story of Your Life." It's a sci-fi drama from Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author Ted Chiang.

prisoners-director-to-develop-sci-fi-drama-story-of-your-life-2.jpg

"The story is set in motion when alien crafts land around the world and an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. As she learns to communicate with the aliens, she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit."

Chiang's story was published in 1998, and it won the Nebula for best novella. The report says it also received praise for tacking the theme of language and free will. I've never read the story, but it definitely sounds intriguing.

Villeneuve is a hell of a talented director. I don't know if you saw Prisoners or not, but that film was pretty awesome. If he can bring that same storytelling drive to this new film, then it's sure to be a great movie.

Sundance '14 Review: WHIPLASH

sundance-14-review-whiplash.jpg

Writer/Director: Damien Chazelle

Starring: Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, Paul Reiser

Story and Direction

Whiplash is an edge of your seat dramatic comedy about the pursuit of musical perfection. The film stars Miles Teller as a first-year student at a music conservatory who is determined to become the next great jazz drummer, and J.K. Simmons as his musical director willing to use the most extreme means to find and develop the next great jazz musician.

Performances

All of Simmons’ previous work has led to this. This is the role he was born to play. It's not supposed to be fun watching someone intimidate, humiliate, and manipulate people to the maddening degree which he does. Yet at the same time, you feel so bad for Teller's character that you're left wondering whether the casting call for this film read "Actor who can play drums," or "Actor who can take brutal verbal and physical abuse." From Teller's previous comedic work, I've come to think of him as a mini-Vince Vaughn, but his performance in this made me take greater notice of his dramatic abilities and his physical dedication to his craft.

Similar To

Whiplash mostly plays out like a sports film, with Simmons able to scream and tear paint off the wall like the most fiery and sadistic of head coaches. However, unlike the sometimes cookie-cutter sports film, this movie is as blisteringly fast-paced and deliciously unpredictable as great jazz music is supposed to be. The film's ending/climax alone is simply cinematic perfection.

Chances You’ll See It in Theaters

This is the first film I saw at Sundance this year, and it set the bar impossibly high. With Teller being the rising star he is right now, and some other familiar faces to help sell the film, I would be shocked if it didn’t get a wide release.

Be sure to check out our video review of the film here.

Official Synopsis:

Andrew, a promising 19-year-old drummer at a cutthroat Manhattan music conservatory, has little interest in being just a musician. Haunted by his father’s failed writing career and plagued with the fear that mediocrity just might be genetic, Andrew dreams of greatness. Determined not to follow in his father’s footsteps, he practices daily until his hands literally bleed. The pressure of success ratchets into high gear when he is picked to join the school band led by the infamous Terence Fletcher, a brutally savage music instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student’s potential. Under Fletcher’s ruthless direction, Andrew begins to pursue perfection at any cost—even his humanity.

Last November 5-year-old Miles, a.k.a. Batkid, took to the streets of San Francisco to fight off several villains plaguing the city. A 10-minute video has been cut together into something of a short film from following the heroic adventures of Batkid, and it's sure to pull fiercely on your heartstring. There are times like these when I'm proud to be a human being.

The Make-a-Wish Foundation, the local police, the local news, and thousands of San Francisco residents all came together to make this possible for the young cancer survivor. This is truly an inspiring story and event, and now you can watch it all unfold in the video below. Thanks to Geekologie for the heads up!

NBC has released a new promo trailer and photo for the second season of their great serial killer series, Hannibal.

The series is based on the characters from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and was developed for television by Bryan Fuller, and I'm excited to see what they have in store for the new season!

The series stars Hugh Dancy as expert criminal profiler Will Graham, who has a unique ability to peer into the mind of serial killers. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist who is helping with the cases and, unbeknownst to Will, is also a serial killer himself. Laurence Fishburne stars as Jack Crawford, the head of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. Caroline Dhavernas and Hettienne Park also co-star.

The second season is set to premiere on February 28th at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Predator Cosplayer Proposes to Girlfriend as Predator

The Predator got together with some of his pals, including a Stormtrooper, a couple of Starcraft characters, Bumblebee, and more, to assist and support him in proposing to his girlfriend.

The report comes from China News, which explains that when his girlfriend, Zhu Wenjing, entered a bar she was immediately surrounded by seven cosplayers all dressed up. I'm surprised she didn't run away, but maybe that's just normal life for her.

Her boyfriend was dressed up as the Predator, and he proceeded to propose to her. She said yes, but it would have been a hell of a lot funnier if after he took his mask off and proposed she replied with… "You're one... ugly motherfucker!"

Spike Jonze's Her was one of my favorite movies of the year, and it happened to get nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards! That movie was just so well-written, and I think that it deals with a story and subject matter that a lot of people can relate too.

The Creators Project and Jonze's friend and collaborator Lance Bangs created a documentary about the movie called Her: Love in the Modern Age. It includes interviews with Olivia Wilde, James Murphy, Brett Easton Ellis, Charlyne Yi, and more as they discuss the film and relationships in general.

BATMAN and SUPERMAN Won't Face-Off Until 2016

Looks like Batman and Superman are going to have to wait a little bit longer to fight each other and then team up. Warner Bros. announced that the Zack Snyder directed film will now be released on May 6th, 2016. The previous date was July 17th, 2015. What's interesting about the new date is that the movie will be going against an unannounced Marvel film, which could very well be Doctor Strange.

Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman had this to say in a statement:

“We are happy to take advantage of these coveted summer dates, which are perfect for two of our biggest tentpole releases. We share the fans’ excitement to see DC Comics’ most popular figures, Superman and Batman, together on the big screen for the first time, which will now be arriving in theatres in May 2016.  Peter Pan has delighted people of every generation for more than a century, so we are thrilled to bring him back to the screen next summer for today’s moviegoers.”

In case you haven't heard, there's also a rumor going around that the studio will be shooting Batman Vs. Superman back-to-back with Justice League. That may be one of the other reasons that the studio decided to push it back–so they have more time to shoot both films.

It will be interesting to see what Marvel film they are going up against, and if Marvel doesn't move the date… which one will do better at the box-office?

The nominations for the 86th annual Academy Awards were announced this week, and a lot of films and actors were snubbed in various categories. The biggest snubs I noticed right off the bat was that Tom Hanks wasn't nominated for Best actor for Saving Mr. Banks or Captain Phillips, and Emma Thompson wasn't nominated for Best Actress for Saving Mr. Banks. This video points out a ton of other films that didn't get nominated, and a lot of them are surprising. The video comes from Nick Bosworth and JoBlo.

THOR's Lady Sif to Appear in Marvel's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel has announced that Jamie Alexander will reprise her role as Lady Sif from the Thor films in ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It's another gimmick that is going to keep me watching this crappy TV series that already needs a reboot into something better.

The report says that she is coming to Earth for a very specific mission, but they give no details on what that mission will actually be. I really like the character Sif. She's great, and I wish she would have a slightly bigger role in the cinematic universe, but I'll take what I can get, which is why I'm still watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I can only hope that the show will get better. It should be fun to see Stan Lee, but I'm mostly excited for the four episode arc that will include Bill Paxton

Disney's MALEFICENT Trailer with New Footage

Disney released a new, sneak-peak-type trailer for Maleficent that includes some great new footage. Robert Stromberg directed the film, and it has an amazing cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple, Sam Riley, Miranda Richardson, and Imelda Staunton. This movie looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

Maleficent is the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

The movie will be released in theaters May 30th, 2014.

Elijah Wood Producing Serial Killer Trilogy Called THE BOY

Elijah Wood and his production company, SpectraVision, is set to produce a serial killer origin trilogy called The Boy. The film has a very interesting and unique premise. It's based on a short film called Henley, which screened at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

According to Variety, the trilogy is "aimed at tracking the childhood of a future serial killer, depicting the character at ages 9, 14 and 18 and ending with his transformation into a mass murderer."

This will definitely make for a really interesting and dark film trilogy. It's directed by Craig Macneill from a screenplay he co-wrote with Clay McLeod Chapman, who created the characters in a novel he wrote called Miss Corpus

The films will start shooting on Februaray 17th on the first movie, and the first film will star 8-year-old Jared Breeze, who had a role in Wood's most recent film, Cooties. Producer Daniel Noah had this to say in a statement,

“Jared only had one line in ‘Cooties’ but he made a huge impression on the set. ‘The Boy’ is a very different kind of child-horror film than ‘Cooties.’ It’s a probing character study into the undeveloped mind of a future madman. Jared’s tender complexity is just right to bring us into the life of this complicated young person.”

I'm looking forward to seeing how this film trilogy turns out.
