Nicolas Cage Almost Played Scarecrow in BATMAN

$

So here's a little tidbit of movie trivia that you can share with your friends. Nicolas Cage was pretty damn close to actually playing Scarecrow in Batman. Not Christopher Nolan's Batman! Nolan has better taste than that! No, it was director Joel Schumacher who asked him to play Scarecrow in another version of Batman that he thankfully didn't get to make. The movie would have been called Batman Triumphant and there's no doubt it would have sucked. Cage revealed this little bit of new during an interview with MTV,

He said he was going to do another installment of 'Batman' and that he'd like me to play Scarecrow, which would have been a lot of fun. I must admit [it would have been fun], especially with Joel, because he and I share a similar sense of humor.

Cage and Schumacher making a Batman movie together? I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am that we dodged that bullet. I was never a big fan of Schmacher's Batman films, they were just silly as hell. As time goes on they just seem to get worse and worse. It's hard for me to even imagine how Cage would have played this villain.

Cage goes on to to say to the following about Nolan's movies, "I think he is genuinely philosophical and the dialogue that emanated from Heath Ledger was brilliant," and then shares his thoughts the tone of comic books today,

There is room for all kinds I think unfortunately we are living in dark times. And sometimes you need to have heroes that can reflect that. So Ghost Rider is perfect for that. Comic Books are a uniquely American invention that have touched the world now with cinema. And what they are is nothing more than ancient Greek myths Norse mythology, or Grim Fairy tales. They kind of give people and identity to embrace themselves to get them through life.

What do you think about Cage playing Scarecrow in this unproduced Batman film? You can watch Cage's video interview below.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Director Jon Chu Discusses Story and Cobra Commander

$

G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu is obviously a huge fan of the animated G.I. Joe series that many of us grew up with. This is the kind of director the movie franchise needed! This movie needed to be made by a fan who understands the fans and respects the property for what it is. I was very skeptical at first, but everything I've seen so far awesomely represents the animated series and toys that I grew up with, so how can I not be excited!? I just didn't think it would come from the guy who directed the Step Up movies and that Justin Bieber documentary.

MTV caught up with the director at Toy Fair and conducted an interview with him in which he discusses the film's characters, story, and the reinvention of Cobra Commander. You've seen the trailer so you know that Snake Eyes and Road Block play a huge role in the story, and that's because they are Chu's favorite characters.

I loved Snake Eyes, of course, and I love Road Block. Those two to me were the coolest duo out there. To me, it was Roadblock and Snake Eyes together that was the kickass team

How can you argue with that logic? As a fan of the series I have to agree. Duke was also cool, but he was still always a little uptight. He went on to talk about casting these characters saying,

It was a dream to be like, 'All right, now we really get to make Roadblock the guy. Who would be the perfect Roadblock?' Of course, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and being able to have Ray Park return as Snake Eyes and have them be on two different adventures all across the world is awesome.

In staying true to the animated series Chu wanted to make this movie a world wide adventure.

As any 'Joe' adventure is, it spans the world, and it's an adventure that ranges from you're in Pakistan one second to Japan the next second and Korea another one, Washington, D.C. You're definitely jumping around and it also collides at a certain point.

He then goes on to talk about bringing Cobra Commander back to his roots and giving fans the Badass villain we all remember.

There are a couple things I really wanted to do in this movie. One of those things was reinvent Cobra Commander, to do it the way I remember him and take him to the next level. To me, Cobra is one of the most iconic villains of all time. I just wanted to know that was him. I wanted to make him more badass than ever.

We got to design him from the ground up. Creating the mask, we went through 35 revisions and how his voice was going to be, how reflective it was going to be. He's definitely a huge presence, and I can't wait. I'm sort of trying to hide a little bit, so people when they come don't know what to expect from Cobra, which is sort of the fun part of it.

I've got to say, I love what I've seen from Cobra Commander so far! The fact that Chu's is still hiding stuff about the character is awesome, and I can't wait to see what he has in store. It looks like G.I. Joe has found the movie director that it deserves, and I'm extremely excited to see it!

What are your thoughts on what Chu had to say in this interview and his vision for G.I. Joe?

New Trailer for Clive Owen's INTRUDERS

A new trailer has been released for the Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) directed horror thriller Intruders, which stars Clive Owen. The story follows two children that live in different countries, and each is visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them. It's never a good thing when kids faces are erased from their heads.

If you like horror films, then this is mostly likely something that you'll want to see. Hell, I like horror films so I'll be seeing it. I think it looks like it could be a fun movie.

Here's the Synopsis:

Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow's beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.

The film hits theaters on March 30th, 2012. Watch the trailer below, and let us know if this looks like it will be a good horror film.

Watch the Full First Episode of NBC's New Series AWAKE Now

NBC has a great looking new series coming out on March 1st called Awake, and the network has released the full first episode online for all of you to watch before it airs on TV. This looks like it's going to be a great new series. I love the concept, and it looks like they are executing it well. I really enjoyed this first episode, and I'm looking forward to seeing the story continue! It looks like NBC could have a big hit on their hands. You should definitely check out this episode if you have the time.

Here's a detailed breakdown of the story for the series:

Awake is an intriguing drama about a detective (Jason Isaacs, "Harry Potter," "Brotherhood") who finds he is leading an arduous double life that defies reality.

Following a tragic car accident, detective Michael Britten finds himself awake in two separate realities: one where his teen son, Rex (Dylan Minnette, "Saving Grace"), died in the crash and his wife, Hannah (Laura Allen, "Terriers"), survived and another where Hannah has perished, leaving Michael and Rex to pick up the pieces. In order to keep both of his loved ones alive, Michael begins living in two dueling realities, churning up confusion. In one reality, Michael and his wife debate having another child, while in the other, his son Rex is turning to his tennis coach, Tara (Michaela McManus, "The Vampire Diaries"), to fill the void from the loss of his mother.

Trying to regain some normalcy, Michael returns to solving crimes in both worlds with the help of two different partners, Detective Isaiah "Bird" Freeman (Steve Harris, "The Practice") and Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama, "That '70s Show"). Michael is assigned a different case in each reality and quickly discovers that his dual existence is actually a powerful tool. He begins to solve impossible cases by using his two realties to gain unique perspectives and link clues that cross over from world to world.

Helping Michael to navigate his two realities are his bureau-assigned therapists Dr. Evans (Emmy Award-winner Cherry Jones, "24") and Dr. Lee (BD Wong, NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"). While both therapists work to untangle his two worlds, Michael has no interest in proving either one is false. But when memories of the accident begin to haunt him, he is forced to confront the truth about what really happened the night of the crash.

JOHN CARTER Sequel Already Being Written - Possible Spoilers

Multiple news sites--including ComingSoon.net and Screen Rant--are reporting from Disney's press junket for their upcoming sci-fi epic John Carter with news from producer Jim Morris that director Andrew Stanton and writer Michael Chabon are currently in the process of writing the film's sequel, tentatively titled John Carter: The Gods of Mars. The script is based on the second novel in author Edgar Rice Burrough's Carter series, The Gods of Mars.

The book's synopsis is (BEWARE OF SPOILERS BELOW):

At the end of the first book, A Princess of Mars, John Carter is unwillingly transported back to Earth. The Gods of Mars begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a ten-year separation from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian afterlife.

Whether or not the film will make as much money as many are claiming it needs to be successful remains to be seen. I think if John Carter does wind up being a hit, this sequel sounds very interesting. What do you think? Would you see a John Carter sequel?

Kyle Chandler Cast in SEAL Team 6 Bin Laden Film

Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler is the latest actor to join director Kathryn Bigelow's (The Hurt Locker) new film based on SEAL Team 6's successful hunt for Osama Bin Laden. The movie will tell the story of how the team took out the Al-Qaeda leader last year during a covert mission.

According to Deadline, Chandler will be taking on the role of a CIA agent. The actor joins the previously announced cast of Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Chris PrattJessica Chastain, Mark Strong, and Edgar Ramirez. The script for the film is complete, and it's set to be released on December 19th, 2012.

This film is bring together a fantastic cast, and it's good to see Chandler landing another solid role. He most recently starred in J.J. Abrams' Super 8, and it looks like he'll end up reprising his role as Coach Taylor in a new Friday Night Lights movie.

I'm really hoping this movie turns out to be good and as accurate as it can be... for a Hollywood movie. We all know how Hollywood likes to embellish things. Do you think Bigelow will get the details of this historical event right?

MGM's VALLEY GIRL Remake Is the Final Straw!

Deadline reports that Paramount and MGM have teamed for a musical remake 1983's Valley Girl. The original film is a slice of 80's nostalgia with a nice mix of New Wave music and valley talk. It is the film that helped launch Nicolas Cage's acting career. The remake will be helmed by commercial director Clay Weiner.

This version of Valley Girl will still "follow the original story of a punk guy with no money from the wrong side of the tracks who sets his sights on winning the affection of a Valley girl with a loutishly preppy boyfriend." The remake will feature the actors singing songs from bands like The Go Go’s and The Cars. The long-gestating project has now been put on the fast track at MGM. Amy Talkington wrote the first draft of the script that is now being rewritten by Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married).

I know it may seem weird that I'm pissed about a Valley Girl remake, but I am. This is the last straw for me. I am tired of Hollywood taking a classic movie and putting a slightly new spin on it. There is no need for films like this to be made. It seems as though MGM and Paramount are trying to make this into an 80's version of Grease.

There have been some decent remakes, but they have been few and far between I literally can count the number of good remakes on one hand. Movies like David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the Coen Brothers' True Grit and War of the Worlds are remakes that I enjoyed. Most other remakes seem to fall flat. I am sure that there are other remakes that are decent, but at the moment they are escaping me.

I am glad that MGM is back from the ashes and has the new James Bond film Skyfall on the horizon, but for God's sake, stop filling your slate with remakes. The studio is currently set to remake RoboCop with director Jose PadilhaDeath Wish with Joe Carnahan, and Carrie with Kim Peirce. Paramount has also planned a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion, and I cringe at the idea of more Hitchcock classics being remade. When is the insanity going to end?

Am I alone in my anger? Let me know in the comments below!

Nonso Anozie Cast in ENDER'S GAME

Nonso Anozie, who recently co-starred in The Grey, has been cast in the feature adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. According to Deadline, he will take on the role of Sergeant Dap, the Battle School man who jokingly calls himself “Mom.”

Also joining the cast is Stevie Ray Dallimore (Joyful Noise), who will play Ender’s father John, and Andrea Powell (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2) will play Ender’s mother Theresa. The three new actors join the previously cast Asa Butterfield as Ender, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld, and Abigail Breslin.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine director Gavin Hood will be taking on the epic challenge of bringing this classic story to the big screen. It's got an amazing cast so far, I just hope the director can awesomely pull off this film! The movie hits theaters on March 15th, 2013.

Is there anyone else you would like to see other than Hood directing this movie? I only ask because I thought Wolverine sucked.

Here's a full description of the the classic 1985 Orson Scott Card sci-fi novel:

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Zegers May Star in Sci-Fi Thriller THE COLONY

Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Mystic River, CSI) and Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead, Frozen) are in final talks to star in The Colony. THR reports that the actors are nearing a deal to star in the the indie sci-fi thriller about "a group of underground survivors after the next Ice Age fending off an invasion of feral cannibals."

Jeff Renfroe is directing based on a script he co-wrote with Patrick Tarr, Pascal Trottier, and Svet Rouskov. The rest of the cast list is being kept quiet for the $16 million Canadian indie. Filming is slated to begin in Toronto on February 22, and last until March 30. Zegers has handled zombies, so why not cannibals? I like Fishburne in sci fi films, so this should be a good fit for him. What are your thoughts?

Country star Dwight Yoakam has confirmed he has left the production of Disney's The Lone Ranger. Yoakam cited scheduling conflicts as the reason he ended his involvement from the film. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski and stars Johnny Depp (Dark Shadows) as Tonto and Armie Hammer (Mirror, Mirror) as the Lone Ranger himself.

This is not the first time Yoakam has left a high-profile project like this. He was offered two different roles in The Dark Knight - the traitorous Det. Wurtz and the mob Banker at the beginning of the film. Yoakam turned them both down. What do you think? Will Yoakam be missed?

Movie Review: GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE

$

What are you expecting from from Mark Neveldine and Brain Taylor's version of Ghost Rider? If you've seen the trailer and film clips from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, then you know exactly what to expect. If what you saw in those trailers and clips entertained you, then you will most definitely enjoy the the movie. If you are expecting something more from what has been shown, you're not going to get it. The story, characters, acting, and script are awesomely absurd, and that's what I liked about the movie.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is just as insanely silly and action-packed as it looks. The movie plays out like a maddening live-action cartoon. The biggest success of the directors in making this movie is they didn't take this character seriously. That portrayed the character and story for what it is... a guy with a flaming skull head trying to save people and destroy them. You just have to let yourself go when watching this movie, and understand the kind of movie you're watching. If you're going in to criticize it, then you'll find plenty of ammo to load your gun with. But if your looking to be mindlessly entertained by a wildly made movie, then that's what you'll get.

I had a a great time watching the film regardless of its faults. It was simple yet incredibly fun. I usually hate watching Nicolas Cage in the films he makes, but I couldn't help but enjoy watching him play Ghost Rider this time around because it was just such a insanely over-the-top performance! I can't even describe it, he just gets so crazy wild! I don't think I've ever seen Cage like this before. There's one scene in particular where he's trying to hold back the Rider from coming out while interrogating a guy, and it was just jacked. He must have been on speed while filming that scene.

I absolutely loved this portrayal of Ghost Rider; it was so much better than the first film. They turned him into a nightmarishly awesome badass. I loved the look and style of the Rider, and there were a lot more hellish details added to make him explode on screen.

The directors that made the movie are the same ones that directed the Crank movies, and those guys are wildly deranged filmmakers, which made them the perfect fit for Ghost Rider. They are what this character needed.

The movie obviously isn't for everyone, there's plenty of fanboy and fangirls out there that are not going to like this movie for one reason or another. But, I'm going to go ahead and recommend that you go see it because I think most of you will have a fun time watching it, especially if you know what you're getting yourself into. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Synospis:

Former stuntman and bounty hunter of rogue demons Johnny Blaze has been living in self-imposed exile, believing that his powers are a curse. But when he is approached by a member of a monastic order who is looking for someone to protect a mother and her son, who are being pursued by the devil in the figure of a man named Roarke, the Ghost Rider takes the case.

Marc Guggenheim Writing PERRY MASON as Downey Jr. Vehicle

Marc Guggenheim (Green LanternArrow) has found his next writing gig. THR reports that he is in talks to pen the script for Warner Bros.' Perry Mason. The project is planned as a potential starring vehicle for Robert Downey Jr. Downey and his wife and producing partner Susan Downey are producing, along with Robert Cort. The concept was based on an original story by Downey and Team Downey president David Gambino.

The Perry Mason character is based on the original Erle Stanley Gardner character from his books. Raymond Burr played Mason on TV from 1957 to 1966. The film will be "set in the 1930s and feature characters such as Mason's secretary, Della Street, private investigator Paul Drake, and Mason's longtime courtroom nemesis, Hamilton Burger."

Guggenheim began his writing career with shows such as Eli Stone, The Practice, and Law & Order. It will be interesting to see how this story will translate to the big-screen. Downey is a solid actor and should be able to pull off this character. What are your thoughts?

Review: Jason Reitman's Live Read of RESERVOIR DOGS

$
0
0

Film Independent curator Elvis Mitchell greeted a sold out crowd at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art last night with an earnest, "Happy Black History Month, everybody!" Film Independent - an organization that has hosted a bunch of awesome events over the past few months we've featured on the site, including a Live Read of The Princess Bride and events for Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt - again hosted director Jason Reitman's Live Read series, a unique event that recasts current actors in roles from much-loved scripts and, for one night only, has them read it aloud on stage for those in attendance. Mitchell's greeting held a special significance for this particular event - a reading of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs with a 99% black cast. (Live Read stalwart Patton Oswalt was the only white member of the cast, playing the voice of the radio DJ announcing the sounds of the 70s throughout the movie.)

The cast was spectacular. Cuba Gooding, Jr. played Mr. Orange (Tim Roth in the film), Anthony Mackie played Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi), Terrence Howard played Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), Anthony Anderson played Nice Guy Eddie (Chris Penn), Chi McBride played Joe (Laurence Tierney), and as last-minute surprise guests, Common played Mr. Brown (Quentin Tarantino) and Laurence Fishburne played Mr. White (Harvey Keitel).

(Just to give you a heads up, the following contains spoilers for Reservoir Dogs.)

From the outstanding opening scene to the climactic Mexican standoff, the cast flew through the script with passion and enthusiasm. Tarantino would have been proud. Reitman chose QT's debut not only because it's a dense, dialogue-heavy screenplay, but because he wanted to reverse the races of the cast and see if that changed the dynamic. Surprisingly, not much changed - quality actors reading a fantastic script seems to be a universal formula for success, and race has almost nothing to do with it. There were some interesting race-related moments, to be sure: for those of you who know the script, there are certain racial slurs peppered throughout the story that were made even stranger by the color of the men's skin reading them last night. Cuba Gooding, Jr. seemed to be the audience barometer, glancing at us with a raised eyebrow when these moments came along as if to say, "ironic, huh?"

Laurence Fishburne was the best performer of the evening, taking on Harvey Keitel's role with the perfect amount of gravitas. He certainly wasn't afraid to raise his voice; in fact, most of the cast went into full-on shouting mode at various points during the read, adding to the electrifying tension of Tarantino's story. Anthony Mackie held his own with a large role, spending most of his time opposite Fishburne and providing a lot of laughs with his neurotic performance. Anthony Anderson was bombastic and funny, bringing the same swagger he had during his appearances on FX's The Shield.

The cast had a blast going through this script, one they all clearly respected and of which they're all big fans. They would laugh at each other's readings of certain lines, like a group of friends who had been hanging out together for years. Terrence Howard's mood changed from goofy to psychopathic when Mr. Blonde is reintroduced to the story; the actor went out of his way to memorize certain lines so he could deliver them creepily staring into the eyes of Common next to him during the torture sequence. (Common voiced the tortured cop, Marvin Nash, after his Mr. Brown character was killed.) During this iconic scene, the Stealers Wheel hit "Stuck in the Middle With You" played over the speakers in the auditorium, adding a funny and eerie reminder of how Tarantino completely rewrote a song's place in pop culture. Howard paused the action and had everybody cracking up when Reitman, who always reads the stage directions, announced his character's death; Howard grabbed his microphone and said, "I wasn't ready to die yet!"

This was the second to last of Reitman's series, and he hasn't announced what his final script read will be yet. I'm excited to attend and report back, so keep your eyes peeled at the end of March for a review of his final entry into one of the coolest events Los Angeles has to offer.

JOHN CARTER Behind-the-Scenes Footage and Clips

Disney's John Carter arrives in 3D on March 9th. Andrew Stanton (Wall-E) directed the film based on Edgar Rice Burroughs novel. Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Thomas Haden Church, and Samantha Morton star in this epic sci-fi adventure. Collider has shared over 13-minutes of footage and some clips. The film has been getting some good buzz as of late, and I am interested in seeing this adaptation unfold on screen.

Here is the synopsis:

From Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

The trailers and footage that we have shared so far have looked and sounded great. It does not hurt thatMichael Giacchino (LostStar Trek) is crafting the score to help set the tone. I have not watched Friday Night Lights, but am interested in seeing Kitsch take on such an awesome character as Carter. Be sure to check out Collider's massive collection of high-resolution images.

Watch the new footage and clips below, and share your thoughts.

If you were transported to another universe, like John Carter, what movie or comic book universe would you want to go to? I would like to go to Willy Wonka's Factory or Candyland - I LOVE Candy.
