Hiroshi Yamauchi, In Memoriam Gallery

As some of you may know, Hiroshi Yamauchi passed away yesterday at the age of 85. Yamauchi was the president of Nintendo Entertainment from 1949 to 2002. He oversaw the creation of everything from the NES up to the Gamecube and made Nintendo the video game juggernaut it is today. Even after he retired, he remained the largest stockholder and chairman until his death. In memory of his legacy, I've searched the internet to find fan art in his name. Enjoy.

We've got another wonderfully made short film for you to watch. This is a period set mystery thriller called "The Red Valentine." The story is set in 1944 Australia, and this is the story description,

After a pair of young lovers are discovered dead, a tangled web of deception unravels, revealing that behind the passionate tragedy lies a dangerous truth.

NINJA TURTLES - First Photos of Sewer Lair

Ninja Turtle Lair92929.jpg

Here's your first looking at the sewer lair in Jonathan Liebesman's live action adaptation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's basically exactly what I imagined it would look like. I do love the furniture made out of used Pizza Hut boxes. Then there's the cool massive computer terminal, with a chair made out of skateboard decks.

As a long time fan of the Ninja Turtles, I really hope that they are able to pull this movie off and give the fans something they will love. The movie stars Megan Fox in the role of April O'Neil, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo, Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, Will Arnett as Vernon Fenwick, Danny Woodburn as Master Splinter, and William Fichtner as Shredder.

The movie is scheduled to hit the big screen on August 8th, 2014.

Plot Point Productions has created another great movie video supercut for all you movie geeks. This one is called "The Last Thing You See: A Final Shot Montage," and it puts a focus on the final shot that we see in a movie. Here's a little description that came along with the video,

A meditation on the beautiful, cathartic, and transcendent power of the final shot.

I will say the final shot of any film should leave a lasting impression of the story that just unfolded before your eyes. As you'll see here, a lot of them are beautiful. They couldn't include every movie ending in the video, but what would you say your favorite movie ending of all time is?

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN Story Trailer - Burn

"You girls need to learn to fight. When witches don't fight, we burn."

FX has released a new trailer for American Horror Story: Coven. It's called "Burn," and it features the first actual footage from the series. It gives us our first real look at the plot of the story, and I have to say it looks awesome! I've also included an extended teaser for the Initiation trailer that was previously released.

Jessica Lange plays the mother of Sarah Paulson's character, Cordelia, who runs a small school for witches in New Orleans. The trailer shows that Taissa Farmiga's character Zoe has just learned that she's a witch and is headed off to the school for witches. This is going to be a great season.

Coven also features Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Denis O'Hare, Patti LuPone, Evans Peters, Lily Rabe, and Emma Roberts.

Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

The series is set to return on October 9th!

Stephen King Explains Why He Still Hates Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING

It's no secret that Stephen King doesn't like Stanley Kubrick's big screen adaptation of The Shining. Even 33 years after the film's release nothing has changed. King still hates the film, and in a recent interview with the BBC, the master of horror explains why.

"[It's] cold, I’m not a cold guy. I think one of the things people relate to in my books is this warmth, there’s a reaching out and saying to the reader, ‘I want you to be a part of this.’ With Kubrick’s The Shining I felt that it was very cold, very ‘We’re looking at these people, but they’re like ants in an anthill, aren’t they doing interesting things, these little insects.’

He didn't really seem to care for Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Jack either:

"Jack Torrance in the movie, seems crazy from the jump. Jack Nicholson, I’d seen all his biker pictures in the ’50s and ’60s and I thought, he’s just channeling The Wild Angels here."

King got The Wild Angels movie mixed up with Hells Angels on Wheels. It's not big deal, I just wanted to point that out in case there was any confusion because Nicholson wasn't in Wild Angels. King then went on to talk about how much he disliked Kubrick’s depiction of Wendy.

"Shelley Duvall as Wendy is really one of the most misogynistic characters ever put on film, she’s basically just there to scream and be stupid and that’s not the woman that I wrote about."

I personally think Kubrick's Shining is a freakin' great horror film, and even though it was different from the book, I still thought it was amazing. I liked it just as much as the book, but in different ways. I can understand why King wouldn't like it though, it was his baby, and Kubrick just did his own thing.

Do you think King makes some good points here?

Stumbled upon the work of Frankie Perez on Tumblr and just had to share. The mash-ups may be simple to think up but the execution is incredible! The crossovers span the world of comics, movies, anime, and gaming. My personal favorite is Hellboy meets Loki, although Terminator and Venom are an extremely close second.

Artist Dave Perillo has moved from one Lucasfilm franchise to another. He recently completed a cool set of Star Wars trilogy art, and now it looks like he's started a new series based on Indiana Jones. It only appropriate that he would start off with Steven Spielberg‘s Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. The poster was made for Acme Archives, and if you want a print, it goes on sale Thursday September 26th at 10am PST via @AcmeArchives.

Open Road Films has released a couple of new clips from Machete Kills. One features Amber Heard as Miss San Antonio, the other is kind of a sizzle reel for Alexa Vega. The movie will be released on October 11th, and there's no doubt that it's going to be a ridiculously entertaining movie!

Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent Machete, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man - he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.

How STAR WARS 1313 Game Project Could Revolutionize Filmmaking

$

Here's a really great behind the scenes video on the making of the video game Star Wars 1313. The footage shown gives us a glimpse at how they are experimenting with new ways to create video games and are using that as an example of what we could see in the future of filmmaking.

According to to a report from The Inquirer, Lucasfilm held a presentation for BAFTA in the UK earlier this week "where they proposed a new paradigm in which feature film production stops at production, with no need for editing or sound mixing or any other post processes." Basically, everything will be done in real time, and you'll see how that looks in the video provided.

ILM VFX supervisor, Kim Libreri, went into more detail about what they are trying to accomplish, and had this to say,

Everyone has seen what we can do in movies, and I think most people will agree the video game industry is catching up quite quickly, especially in the next generation of console titles. I’m pretty sure within the next decade, we’re going to see a convergence in terms of traditional visual effects capabilities -making realistic fire, creatures, and environments – but working completely interactively. We think that computer graphics are going to be so realistic in real time computer graphics that, over the next decade, we’ll start to be able to take the post out of post-production; where you’ll leave a movie set and the shot is pretty much complete…

…If you combine video games with film-making techniques, you can start to have these real deep, multi-user experiences. Being able to animate, edit and compose live is going to change the way we work and it’s really going to bring back the creative experience in digital effects.

It's amazing how fast technology is advancing and changing things. The future is looking more and more awesome! The report also says that Star Wars 1313 is still in development! The last we heard it had been cancelled, but that doesn't seem to be the case now, which would be amazing if it true, because the game looks incredible.

Looks like there is more to Star Wars 1313 than meets the eye.

Neil Marshall to Write and Direct TROLL HUNTER Remake

The Descent  director Neil Marshall is set to write and direct the inevitable remake of Troll Hunter. I really enjoyed the original Norwegian film; it was pretty awesome. I never really saw the need for a remake, but there's money to be made! The plan is to start shooting the film in early 2014.

Christopher Columbus is producing the film along with several of the producers of the original movie. According to Deadline, they are looking to get a big star "not normally associated with the genre" for the male lead.

The original movie focused on a group of students investigating a series of mysterious bear killings. "They follow a mysterious hunter into the deep woods, learning along the way that he is a troll hunter, and that the creatures killing those bears might not confine their appetites to that species only."

Marshall is currently directing the biggest episode of next season's Game of Thrones and has previously worked on films such as Centurion, Doomsday, and Dog Soldiers. Even though I'm not a big fan of Troll Hunter being remade, Marshall should do a good job with it.

Adam Sandler to Star in Tom McCarthy's THE COBBLER

adam-sandler-to-star-in-tom-mccarthys-the-cobbler-header.jpg

Adam Sandler has been on a roll lately with making crappy movies, but he's now looking to join an indie drama being directed by Tom McCarthy called The Cobbler

According to THR, the modern day film tells the story of "a shoe man who has the ability to metaphysically step into the lives of the people whose shoes he repairs."

Sandler will play the cobbler, and he hopes to fit the movie in before he shoots Jason Reitman’s latest project, Men Women & Children. So Sandler actually has a couple of decent sounding films in development. Sure the movies won't make a ton of money, but they might wash the bad taste out of our mouths from the crappy movies he's been making.

McCarthy is the director behind the great indie dramas The Station Agent and The Visitor, and I imagine this new movie is going to be just as good as his previous work.

First Look at Henry Cavill in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Homes) is currently in the middle of shooting his next film The Man From  U.N.C.L.E., and this is our first look at the star of the film, Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), who plays the character Napoleon Solo.

The story is set in the 1960s at the height of the Cold War, and it "centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe."

The movie also stars Alicia Vikander, Jared Harris, and Hugh Grant.  It will be interesting to see how this movie turns out. I love Richie's style, so I imagine it's going to be really cool!

Cate Blanchett to Direct Psychological Thriller THE DINNER

Cate Blanchett has been acting for 20 years, and she always gives great performances in the things she does. We're about to see if her amazing talents will translate to behind the camera. She's going to make her directorial debut with a psychological thriller called The Dinner. The movie is based on a novel written by Herman Koch, and the story "explores just how far some parents might go to protect their children."

I'm sure Blanchett will end up doing a solid job with the film. Here's a more detailed description of the story from the book:

An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives -- all over the course of one meal.
It's a summer's evening in Amsterdam, and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant for dinner. Between mouthfuls of food and over the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse -- the banality of work, the triviality of the holidays. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened.
Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act; an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable, insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.
Tautly written, incredibly gripping, and told by an unforgettable narrator, The Dinnerpromises to be the topic of countless dinner party debates. Skewering everything from parenting values to pretentious menus to political convictions, this novel reveals the dark side of genteel society and asks what each of us would do in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Check out this 16-foot All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST) replica. The actual size of an AT-ST is 28-feet, so the creator of this thing came pretty close. The replica comes from ebay user hollywoods-finest-stuff, who is selling it for around $15,700. He's advertising it as being life size, but as we pointed out, that's not actually the case. Would you spend that kind of money on this thing? I also love the TARDIS replica in the background.

PRISONERS Movie Review - Powerful and Intense Thriller

prisoners-movie-review-powerful-and-intense-thriller-header-1.jpg

For those of you who aren't sure if you want to see Prisoners, I'm here to tell you to stop questioning and go see the movie. Prisoners is easily one of the best films I've seen this year! I've been hearing buzz about this movie for years, and it all started when the script made the Black List of unproduced screenplays back in 2009. The original script was written by Aaron Guzikowski, and holy shit, he delivered one hell of a insanely great story, and director Denis Villeneive did a amazing job bringing it to life.

The film tells the tragic story of two girls who go missing. One of the girl's dads, played by Hugh Jackman, takes matters into his own hands when he feels the detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) tasked with finding them and the person who kidnapped them drops the ball. Both of these actors gave incredible performances. In my opinion this is one of the best performances of their careers. The film has award nominations written all over it. I'm talking Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and who knows what else.

prisoners-movie-review-powerful-and-intense-thriller-header-2.jpg

The story was amazingly intense. It's an edge of your seat thriller, and the gripping story had me hooked from beginning to end. It was still a hard movie to watch, especially specially since I have two little girls of my own, and the thought of anything bad ever happening to them or being kidnapped is one of my worst nightmares. This film got me thinking what I would do if I was ever put in that situation. There were some ethical lines crossed in the film, and all I know is I would do whatever it took to bring my girls back safe and sound. The movie definitely got my emotions brewing, and I was scared, nervous, and sad. I even got choked up a few times. The subject matter is extremely heavy, and there are some incredibly agonizing sequences in the movie that weren't easy to watch play out, but I couldn't look away.

If you're a fan of crime thrillers you'll love this movie, but even if you're not, you should still go out and see this film. There are a lot of twists and turns, and I never really saw what was coming around the corner. There were a lot of surprises and throughout the whole film. I never knew if it was going to end up having a happy or a sad ending until the movie actually came to an end. If you want to know more about the film then go see it for yourself, because I won't spoil it for you.

If you have seen the film already, tell us what you thought!
