ROOM 237 - The Shining Kubrick Doc Picked Up by IFC

Room 237 was one of my favorite films at The Sundance Film Festival. Room 237 is a documentary that explores several crazy theories surrounding Stanley Kubrick's 1980 classic horror film The Shining. These hidden meanings are explored in nine segments, and it features voice overs from several different Shining fanatics while using footage from Kubrick's movie to show examples of their conclusions. You can read our wonderful review of the film right here

This truly is a fascinating documentary, one that needs to be seen by everyone that is a fan of Kubrick's horror masterpiece. I'm happy to say that the doc has been acquired by IFC Films, so you'll get your chance soon enough to watch it. According to Deadline, the distribution company will release the film later this year simultaneously in theaters and Video On Demand.

I loved the doc, and regardless of what I believed and didn't believe in this movie, in the end it still blew my mind. I'll never watch The Shining the same way again.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 2 - Teaser Poster

Here's a great teaser poster for the second season of FX's American Horror Story. It was recently revealed by the show's creator Ryan Murphy that the next season will take place on the east coast in a horror institute, a.k.a. an insane asylum. This new poster obviously reflects that and the madness we will see.

If I'm not mistaken the poster has that old school blue and red 3D awesomeness going on. What do you think of the poster?

First Look at SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS with Farrell, Harrelson, Walken, and Rockwell

$

Academy Award winner Martin McDonagh's upcoming film Seven Psychopaths isn't your typical crime film--it's a tad stranger than fiction. Promising a story that will "[walk] the line between comedy and brutality," the film stars Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, and Gabourey Sidibe. The movie has no release date, but it is expected to be released later this year.

Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay 'Seven Psychopaths'. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime, a religious man with a violent past. Charlie (Woody Harrelson) is the psychopathetic gangster whose beloved dog, Billy and Hans have just stolen. Charlie’s unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.

According to Colin Farrell, his experience making the film was a bit tiring at times, but overall enjoyable.

I’m really enjoying this because my first seven weeks on the film were s**t. Not my experience on the film — don’t get me wrong. But what my character was going through. It was uncomfortable, and frustrating, and he was not having a good time.

Colin's lack of a good time is mostly due to Woody Harrelson's character, Charlie. Charlie's just had his shih tzu Bonny taken from him and he's willing to do anything--including kill people--to get her back. “He’s kind of the gangster boss of an organized crime syndicate,” McDonagh says. “He’s into very dark stuff.”

Sounds like some pretty funny stuff, and I can't wait to see more. What do you think? Does an A-list cast with a comedic take on crime excite you?

Alfred Hitchcock's REBECCA To Be Remade by DreamWorks

DreamWorks is embarking on a journey to develop an unnecessary remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1940's psychological noir thriller Rebecca. I just cringe whenever I hear about someone wanting to remake a Hitchcock film because you just can't do better.

The studio has gone ahead and hired Eastern Promises screenwriter Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, The Lost Symbol) to pen the script, and he will go back to the original book written by Daphne DuMaurier for inspiration. Does it make it ok if they go back to the source material to remake a movie?

The story follows a naive young woman who marries a rich widower and settles into his gigantic mansion. While there she finds the memory of his first wife maintaining a grip on her husband and the servants.

What are your thoughts on this movie getting remade?

Only One Man Can Trump Nolan's Batman Trilogy

$

0

Lately, geek circles have been dominated by talk about The Dark Knight Rises, and most, if not all, can agree that it will take a lot for the inevitable follow up to top Christopher Nolan's work. In truth, it would take a lot to continue to interest fans of the series in general.

It feels as though since its film debut in the 60's, the film industry has shown Batman from all possible angles. We've seen Adam West dance around all campy-like, Tim Burton's twisted view of Gotham, and Joel Schumacher...showing us that soundtracks can sometimes save a film?

The point is, we've seen a lot of interpretations of The Dark Knight, but there is still one we have yet to see on film. A veteran torn by age and driven to cynicism by the carelessness of society, this Bruce Wayne has lost hope in Gotham. He continues to defend it despite his failing condition in hopes of finding a true successor. His body is weak, but his suit and gadgets keep him strong. Who could play such a man?

If there was ever a time for Clint Eastwood to don the role of the "caped crusader," it would be now. Playing an aged Bruce Wayne may not be the role of a lifetime for the celebrated bad ass of the Western, but it would be a performance for fans to cherish for a lifetime.

Impossible? Fans already know there are two story lines in which an old Batman would work well...

Batman Beyond- This script was already in development prior to Batman Begins, so no doubt some groundwork has been laid out for the motion picture. I loved the animated series and the concept of an elderly Bruce Wayne mentoring the new Batman in a futuristic setting. The only problem I foresee with this idea is that Eastwood would have more of a supporting role in this film, and what good would that be when new technology can put him front and center?!

Which brings us to...

The Dark Knight Strikes Again- It sounds bad ass just saying it! The title alone of Frank Miller's epic graphic novel sounds like a continuation of the current trilogy! While still having to share the screen with a female youth (Catgirl, formerly Robin in Dark Knight Returns), Batman gets to take on a good amount of action on his own! Not to mention, there's a fair amount of cameos from other superheroes in this film, including a Superman/Batman showdown!

With Eastwood at work on another movie this year (Trouble With The Curb), it's safe to say that although he's slowed down, he's not shying away from acting roles. So the possibility of him being on board is still there.

A nerd pipedream? I hope not, as I believe if it is not done soon, Hollywood will have missed out on a golden opportunity. Do you agree? Disagree?

Ridley Scott Directing THE COUNSELOR, Seeking Michael Fassbender For Lead

Ridley Scott has found his next directing gig. Deadline reports that Scott has signed on to direct The Counselor, based on a script by Cormac McCarthy. This project is on a fast-track to production and Scott has reportedly reached out to his Prometheus star Michael Fassbender about taking on the lead role. No official offer has been made, but a deal is very likely.

A May 1 start date is slated for the project that is described as “No Country For Old Men on steroids.” Scott will be meeting with a number of high-profile actors to star. McCarthy was expected to turn in a novel, but wrote his first feature script instead. A number of directors were interested in the job, but Scott expressed interest in directing in late January.

According to Deadline, The Counselor is set in the contemporary Southwest and is "reminiscent of the rough and tumble world depicted in the Oscar-winning adaptation of McCarthy’s novel No Country For Old Men. The protagonist is a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation."

The film is being produced by The Road's Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz. “The spec falls smack in the middle of what everyone responds to with Cormac’s novels," said Wechsler.

Steve Schwartz had this to say:

Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions. It’s a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy’s wit and humor in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy’s most disturbing and powerful works.

I am very excited to see Scott's Prometheus with Fassbender. This sounds like a perfect film for both of them, so let's hope he signs on to star. What are your thoughts on this news?

Russell Crowe To Join Dracula Movie HARKER

About a year ago Warner Bros. announced a new Dracula film project called Harker. The movie was described as a reimagining of Bram Stoker's classic novel. Today, we learned from Vulture that Russell Crowe is currently in talks with the studio to take on the role of Jonathan Harker.

The story is told from the point of view of Jonathan Harker, who is a Scotland Yard detective in the film instead of a lawyer. He's tracking Dracula, who is murdering people in England. The script sets up the sleuth as a potential new franchise character.

When the project was first announced, director Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown, Orphan) was hired to make the movie. Later on down the road they pulled him off of the project to take over their live-action Akira adaptation. As you know Akira has hit another road bump, and the studio wants the director back on board to take on Harker before jumping back onto Akira, the budget for which will be ridiculously low.

Crowe is a solid actor that would be perfect for the role of Harker so I hope he takes it. The actor is currently playing Inspector Javert in Tom Hooper’s musical adaptation of Les Miserables. What are your thoughts on Crowe possibly taking on Harker?

Patton Oswalt Joins Ben Stiller's THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

Comedian Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Big Fan, Young Adult) is joining Ben Stiller's next directorial project, the fantasy-comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The film is a remake of a 1947 musical-- which was also based on a short story written by famed author James Thurber--starring Danny Kaye, with Stiller to play the title role. The film is being written by Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness, The Weather Man).

The film tells the story of

a henpecked husband (Stiller) copes with the frustrations of his dull life by imagining he is a fearless airplane pilot, a brilliant doctor, and more. [Kristen Wiig] would play a co-worker to Mitty and also an alternate version of that character in the fantasy sequences. Oswalt's part is said to be that of an eHarmony representative who helps create a profile for the Mitty character.

I find it a tad odd that Oswalt would sign on to play an eHarmony rep given his outspoken disdain for others' personal beliefs. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of the guy, but I enjoyed him in The King of Queens and Ratatouille so I'm sure he will be just fine. What do you think? Do Ben Stiller and Patton Oswalt make a good comedic pair?

I don't know if you've seen Tom Hardy's Bronson or not, but it's what sold me on the fact that he would be able to take on the role of Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Here's a humorous re-dubbed version of the TDKR trailer where Bane's voice has been replaced by the voice of his Bronson character, and you need to know that it's defiantly NSFW. Bronson has a very dirty mouth.

SPACE: 2099 Coming Back to TV

The classic 1970's sci-fi TV series Space: 2099 will be reimagined as a new TV series. The series will be developed by ITV Studios America and HDFILMS, the same people that brought V back to the small screen. Unfortunately, V turned out to be a dud.

The original series was created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and starred Martin Landau (Ed Wood) and Barbara Bain (Mission: Impossible), who played crew members of Moonbase Alpha struggling to survive after a massive explosion throws the Moon from orbit into deep space.

HDFilms president and executive producer of the series Jace Hall had this to say about what they are doing:

Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways. While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today’s audiences, I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by the original Space: 1999 television show represent an exciting platform to explore possibilities.

Managing director Paul Buccieri added the following statement:

After more than 35 years, we are thrilled to be developing a new vision of our much beloved franchise for audiences worldwide. Historically, the Space: 1999 brand has entertained and fascinated millions of people.

I think this could be a great series if done right, so let's just hope they do it right, and it turns out to be a better show than V. What do you think about this series making a updated comeback?

More TWILIGHT Movies Possible If Stephenie Meyer Writes Fifth Book

$

0

When Lionsgate bought Summit Entertainment last month, it was reported that Twilight may continue on either the big or small screen. Lionsgate’s Rob Friedman revealed in an earnings report that the studio is indeed interested if Stephenie Meyer writes another book. Friedman had this to say, according to THR (via /Film):

If she (Meyer) wishes to do it, we’ll be there to support her.

Meyer stated in 2009 that she was open to writing another book:

I am a little burned out on vampires right now. I think I need a little break. I might go spend some time with my aliens. I might do something completely different. I’ve got to cleanse the palate. I may come back to it. I did envision it as a longer series. But I wrapped Breaking Dawn in a way that I felt satisfied with, so if that moment didn’t come, I’d be okay.

Meyer actually had begun writing a fifth book called Midnight Sun, which was a rewrite of the first Twilight novel from the perspective of Edward Cullen. In 2008, the first twelve chapters of the unfinished novel leaked online, so she quit writing.

If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

She decided to put the book on hold, and maybe go back and  finish it at a later date. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 arrives on Blu-ray tonight. The Hunger Games will have a trailer for the last film when it opens on March 23. I have seen all of the films and read all of the books, and would be fine seeing another film actually. This is not likely to be a popular sentiment, but we don't always have to agree.

What are your thoughts?

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel is currently in production, and it was announced today that Hasbro has landed the license to design and manufacture all of the action figures, toys, and other products associated with the Star Trek brand, launching in support of the highly anticipated movie.

I have some fond memories of playing with Star Trek toys. When I was younger I actually made a Star Trek movie with a bunch of toys and play sets that I had. It will be a cold day in hell when that movie ends up seeing the light of day.

Here's the full synopsis with all of the details:

Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) announced today it has entered into agreement with CBS Consumer Products to manufacture and globally market a variety of products based on the STAR TREK property beginning in 2013. The toy line will launch in support of the STAR TREK movie sequel from Paramount Pictures, which will open May 17, 2013.

Leading the product offering from Hasbro will be a line of premium KRE-OSTAR TREK building sets featuring fantastical spaceships and legendary characters from the franchise. The KRE-O STAR TREK sets will offer high-quality KRE-O bricks as well as new KREON figures in the likeness of popular characters. Among its additional new play experiences, Hasbro will also offer robust line of roleplay toys for kids and fans to act out the intergalactic saga as well as select new figures.

“The STAR TREK property is an entertainment giant known by millions across the globe and Hasbro is thrilled to be working with CBS Consumer Products to bring the franchise to life in toy form,” said John Frascotti, chief marketing officer, Hasbro, Inc. “As a global branded play company, Hasbro delivers the best properties in a variety of formats to consumers around the world. We’re excited to offer fans the opportunity to experience icons of STAR TREK in exhilarating new ways with our KRE-O building sets as well as with new roleplay items and more.”

“Hasbro and STAR TREK have always been known as innovative brands,” said Liz Kalodner, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Consumer Products. “Bringing them together in this new toy line will give fans of the entire STAR TREK franchise new ways to experience the final frontier, including the first complete construction program.”

STAR TREK will mark the third major entertainment property to be featured in the KRE-O line from Hasbro. The Company successfully introduced the KRE-O brand in 2011 with building sets featuring its globally popular TRANSFORMERS characters. In 2012 Hasbro continues the KRE-O TRANSFORMERS line and is introducing KRE-O BATTLESHIP building sets based on its gaming property and upcoming live action movie BATTLESHIP, from Universal Pictures. More details about Hasbro’s STAR TREK product offerings will be announced at a later date.

SILENT HILL Director To Take On BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with Vincent Cassel

Silent Hill director Christophe Gans is set to take a crack at making a new live-action feature film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. The film even has a great little cast of actors that includes Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) and Lea Seydoux (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol).

The last film Gans directed was Silent Hill back in 2006, but before that he directed a cool little action film called Brotherhood of the Wolf. They guy definitely has a great visual style, so it should be interesting to see what he ends up doing with this classic fairy tale.

In a statement to THR Gans said he is looking to "unleash" his imagination and says,

Although I will keep to a form of storytelling of this timeless fairy tale that is in keeping with the same pace and characters as the original, I will surprise the audience by creating a completely new visual universe never experienced before and produce images of an unparalleled quality.

Every single one of my movies has presented me with a challenge but this one is, by far, the most exciting and rewarding.

I've gotta say, I like what he's saying, and I'm excited to to see what he ends up creating for this film. As for the cast you can't really argue, Castle is an incredible actor, and Seydoux is pretty damn beautiful.
