Teaser Trailer for James Franco's CHILD OF GOD

$

Here's the teaser trailer for James Franco's big screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Child of God. Franco directed the film, which "tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as 'a child of God much like yourself perhaps.' Ballard’s life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation.” The trailer basically introduces the audience to this character. It's brief, but it gives you a good sense of the tone that the film will have. There's a lot of talent involved with this movie, so I'm sure the movie is going to turn out great.

The movie stars Jim Parrack, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Haze, Jeremy Ambler, Fallon Goodson, Vince Jolivette, Brian Lally, Nina Ljeti, Terrance Huff, Elena McGhee, and Nathan Mohebbi.

Child of God premieres this week at the Venice Film Festival before screening as a special presentation at Toronto.

This little indie film, I Declare War, looks fantastic! The story centers on a crazy intense game of capture the flag between two teams of of pre-teens. The story is a mix of reality and fantasy, and the line between the two becomes blurred as the game goes on. The movie gets a limited theatrical release on August 30th, and today we have two new posters for the film and a clip. The movie has been getting solid reviews, and I'm hoping to see it in theaters when it opens.

Armed with nothing more than twigs, their imaginations and a simple set of rules, a group of 12-year-olds engaged in a lively game of Capture the Flag in the neighborhood woods start dangerously blurring the lines between make-believe and reality. Rocks = Grenades. Trees = Control towers. Sticks = Submachine guns. The youthful innocence of the game gradually takes on a different tone as the quest for victory pushes the boundaries of friendship. The would-be warriors get a searing glimpse of humanity's dark side as their combat scenario takes them beyond the rules of the game and into an adventure where fantasy combat clashes with the real world.

The film was directed by Jason Lapeyre and Robert Wilson, and it's being distributed by Drafthouse Films. It is currently available on VOD, iTunes, and digital download.

PAX Weekend eSports Schedule

$

Good new, eSports fans! Twitch.tv has released its streaming schedule for over the PAX weekend and it has some goodies. Throughout the day on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday they will be highlighting non-competitive games, like Rift, Ryze, Tearaway, and much more, but the high point of the weekend will be the $20,000 SMITE Invitational tournament running every night from 4pm-6pm PDT. The SMITE stream will be at www.twitch.tv/smitegame (it is currently streaming random players, but once the tournament starts it will switch over).

For a game still in Beta, it has a surprisingly large prize pool. Sure, lately prize pools on larger competitive games have reached into the millions, but $20k is nothing to sniff at. It should be really fun to watch even if you don't play SMITE. It is a MOBA, so even though it looks different, the rules are basically the same. If you don't know exactly what's going on, Twitch usually has good announcers that help explain everything.

Besides SMITE, Twitch will also be streaming a $100k World of Tanks Open tournament on Sunday night. The schedule has the tournament running from 6:00 pm to 1:30 am, so you’ll have something to watch if you decide not to waste your long weekend on something as silly as sleep. World of Tanks is about large scale team tank battles so it will undoubtedly be fun to watch. Streaming for World of Tanks will be at www.twitch.tv/worldoftanks.

This weekend should be a blast for eSports fans with multiple high stakes tournaments to keep them occupied. If you haven't yet made the jump to watching eSports, now's a good time to start. SMITE  is action packed, so there will be a lot going on to keep you interested. Also, who doesn't like watching Gods beat the crap out of each other?

The full schedule is available here.

The Formula One racing film Rush looks pretty freakin' radical. I like everything I've seen from the movie so far. It looks like there's going to be a lot of intense Formula One racing action, but here's a new clip from the film that gives us a look at more of the dramatic side of things. It features the first meeting between race car driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and beautiful model Suzy Miller (Olivia Wilde), who goes on to become his wife. Check out the clip!

Digital Domain VFX Sizzle Reel

Digital Domain is one of the biggest and most popular digital VFX compaies in the entertainment industry. They do effects for films, TV, and video games, and this sizzle reel highlights some of the film projects they worked on over the years, such as Ender's Game, Iron Man 3, Titanic, Armageddon, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Tron: Legacy, and more. It's amazing how far special effects have come over the years. We've come so far that it's hard to imagine what they will look like 10 years from now.

Ben Stiller's upcoming film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, looks so freakin' good. I love the trailer that was released. It definitely made my list of favorite trailers. Above you'll find a new poster for the film that features Stiller running through the air. Everything about this film sparks the imagination, and that's why I'm so excited about it.

James Thurber's classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

The movie comes out on December 25th, 2013.

Mario can't seem to keep his hat on his head in this incredibly cool live-action video of him and his brother Luigi performing parkour stunts around a city. Some fun special effects have been included like fireball shooting, turtle stomping, and brick breaking. I've got to say, throwing yourself out of a parking garage window head first is a pretty ballsy move, but they pull it off gracefully in this video. Check it out!

It seems like he is the ultimate superhero in the game and can pretty much do anything and everything that the characters he created can do. Check out this hilarious clip of a technology news reporter slaughtering the announcement of Nintendo's 2DS. She pronounced Nintendo's handhelds as the "2 Dees" and the "3 Dees." The difference between the two? She reports that the 2 Dees has "lower resolution graphics" than the 3 Dees. Remember, the only graphical difference is that the 2DS has no 3D feature.

I know it's a fairly small mistake, but come on, this is a feature called "Tech Bytes."

Bonus gaffe: She also refers to the Wii U simply as a Wii, but that mistake's been made before

Zack Snyder's Reason for the Mass Death in MAN OF STEEL

$

0

Many fans speculate that the mass destruction and staggering death toll left by Superman and Zod's battle in Metropolis will serve as a jumping off point for the Man of Steel sequel. Lex Luthor could simultaneously earn the support of Metropolis and villainize Superman by stepping in to clean up the estimated $750 billion dollars worth of property damage, while Bruce Wayne/Batman's likely titular battle with the Man of Steel could be over the horrific loss of innocent life -- estimated by the same analyst at 129,000 people.

I absolutely loved the first film, and having the aftermath of Supes' first battle serve as a throughline for future sequels would be a clever approach to introducing these other characters. In a recent interview, however, Zack Snyder explained his reason for including all the death and destruction, and it isn't as schemingly crafted as we'd like to believe. While promoting Man of Steel, the director told JapanTimes:

“I wanted the movie to have a mythological feeling. In ancient mythology, mass deaths are used to symbolize disasters. In other countries like Greece and Japan, myths were recounted through the generations, partly to answer unanswerable questions about death and violence. In America, we don’t have that legacy of ancient mythology. Superman (who first appeared in ‘Action Comics’ in 1938) is probably the closest we get. It’s a way of recounting the myth.”

Having IHop and Sears in the background of half the shots must have also been used to give the film that "mythological feeling." We all remember how Greek gods love pancakes and power tools. Anyway...

Is comparing Superman and Zod to Greek gods and likening old comics to ancient myths a satisfying reason for the long and reckless battle at the end of the movie? You tell me. All I know is that I'm gonna do my part in recounting the myth. I'll tell my grandkids that sometimes gods, or god-like beings from another planet, come to Earth to battle, and as a result, people die… that ought to give them nightmares.

George Clooney and his space scruff are on full display in this new character poster for Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. The only thing missing is his lone co-star, Sandra Bullock. Maybe if you look close enough you can see her in the reflection of his helmet… no, just more of his nostrils.

The space thriller has been receiving nothing but positive reviews -- literally nothing but, it currently holds a 100% rating on RottenTomatoes. However, critical acclaim doesn't always translate to box office success. I have hope, though, because whenever I see the trailer in theaters it always gets a big reaction and plenty of gasps from the audience.

Gravity hits theaters October 4th.

Chris Pratt and Kevin Feige Talk GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is going to end up being a spectacular movie. marvel fans are absolutely going to love it. We still have a ways to go, but while we wait for them to release more visual awesomeness from the film, here's a few things that actor Chris Pratt who plays Star Lord, and studio President Kevin Feige has to say about the film!

In an interview with IGN Pratt discussed what his experience has been like shooting the film,

It’s been really great. It’s hard to even put into words, especially for someone like me who has the vocabulary of a sixth-grader. It’s been a real trip. There’s a lot of super talented people working on it - artists. That’s what I always loved about comic books as a kid, the drawings. I didn’t ever read them that much. I wasn’t too big into the stories, but I loved the artwork and the covers. I’d like to draw a lot as a kid myself. So to see that, as they did making these comic books, they’ve hired the best artists in the world to do the concept artwork and to design these worlds. It’s so imaginative and so unreal. We’re working really hard and I’m in a bit of a daze, but I just can’t wait for people to see what we’re doing out there. I think that footage they showed at Comic-Con is very accurate to the movie that we’re making. I thought that footage was pretty badass.
He goes on to talk about the tone of the film saying,

Yeah, I think tone is the major thing we have to accomplish, a consistent tone, going from silly and comedic to high-stakes drama and action, and everything in between. It’s really up to James, and I trust everything that he’s doing. I think we’re getting good stuff. I don’t know what to say about it other than it might be…Oh! It’s the greatest movie of the 21st century! That’s what I’ll say. It’ll be the Citizen Kane of movies other than Citizen Kane.

When asked about Guardians teaming up with The Avengers he said,

Man, that would be really cool. What’s nice is that it is all the same universe. Because it falls under the Marvel umbrella, there is the possibility, just like in the comic books, that these stories could intersect.

In a separate interview with Empire Kevin Feige answered a bunch of questions regarding the movie as well. These are from last week, but here they are anyway in case you missed them the first time around.

On the film being Marvel’s Star Wars:

"We’re not making this to make Marvel’s Star Wars. We’re doing this to explore the other side of the existing Marvel Universe. The fact that Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a human from our time, that he carries a personal cassette recorder with him, already it’s very different. It’s not a long, time ago in a galaxy far, far away, it’s now in a galaxy far, far away."

On the if the film will take place at the same time as the other Phase Two movies:

"The general answer is yes. It’s not exactly revealed what year or month it is in relation to the other Phase Two films. But yes, it’s the same time."

On if it's more of a stand-alone film:

"Certainly more than the others. We’ve already said that Thanos plays a part in it and is a character in it. That in and of itself should tell you it’s connected to the other worlds."

On the main villain:

"Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) is very much the main bad guy. And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you’ll get more than the one turn-around-and-smirk. You’ll get much more than that."

He then gives a brief breakdown of each of the characters in the Guardians team.

"They are an unlikely band. It’s pure circumstance that brings them all together throughout the course of the movie.
  • "Rocket [Raccoon] has been genetically and mechanically altered, he’s an experiment from one part of the galaxy.
  • "Groot is a species that happens to look like trees look, and is quite communicative if you can understand the different inflections in the way he says, 'I am Groot.'
  • "Peter Quill left Earth in the mid-’80s, but when we meet back up with him he’s very much a citizen of the Universe.
  • "Drax (Dave Bautista) has one goal and one goal only, which is to kill Ronan because of a past tragedy.
  • "When we meet Gamora (Zoe Saldana), she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Korath (Djimon Hounsou), and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has such a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren’t greeting her with open arms."

The movie comes out on August 1st, 2014! Are you excited?

Update on UNCHARTED, METAL GEAR SOLID, and MASS EFFECT Movies!

Uncharted
Mass Effect
Metal Gear Solid

Video game movies are about to blow up on the big screen. With Ubisoft, EA Games, Sony Entertainment, and Microsoft all setting up film projects, we are about to enter a new age of video game films. Hopefully this time around we will get some solidly great adaptations!

Kotaku recently talked to producer Avi Arad about some of the video game movies he's involved with, including Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, and Mass Effect. He starts off by talking about video game movies in general.

"Converting games to film hasn't been done yet successfully, though Resident Evil did very well—it was actually a great series. I remember when Bernd Eichinger started it. I was working with him, I just couldn't do that at Marvel but I had a good feeling about it, it's a fantastic franchise."

He goes to explain that one of the big problems with video game films is the apprehension of the studios.

"I think that film studios are bankers and filmmakers are risk takers and somewhere in between we meet on the battlefield. And the moment one video game movie goes through the roof, it's the same thing that I've been through with comic books."

He then goes on to give an update on the Uncharted movie saying,

"I think Uncharted will be very successful. It's a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realized they're being robbed, and they're trying to recoup these important pieces. Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed]."

He briefly talked about Metal Gear Solid , saying, "If you go to Metal Gear Solid, it's actually full of storytelling." Arad added, "You have Cain and Abel." The guy who interviewed Arad said that the producer expects the movie to be about three or more years away.

As for Mass Effect... It will most likely take even longer. "It's a big idea, that we, humans, are the least developed, the least trusted, it's an interesting mirror image of our world, we are the aliens now. Love the project, it's getting there, it's been a lot of work; some movies take five, six years before they're ready."

I'm pretty confident that these upcoming video game films are going to make the jump into awesomeness, just like the comic book movies did. I'm excited to start seeing how they turn out!

WALKING DEAD Season 4 - Tons of New Details!

The Walking Dead is set to return in October, and if you're not already excited for its return, listen to some of the cast and crew talk about in some detail what is in store for the fans. I think you're going to be very happy with what is coming next season.

While talking to THR, new showrunner Scott Gimple explained:

"I'm excited to tell stories in the book that I love. We're catching up to some of those. We're taking the greatest hits approach of all the things I loved that we've done and grabbing from all the different seasons and working it up. There are a lot of characters that are dead on the show that aren't dead in the books. There are a lot of characters on the show that aren't in the book. It's a remixing of a lot of elements from the book in different context; different characters a lot of the time but taking the emotional thrust of those elements and putting them all in a different rhythm. People will see stuff from the comics and they'll know exactly where it came from but it'll be in a different context -- it has to be. You'll also see stories that are totally outside of the comic that have never been seen before. But the basis for those stories are totally from the spirit of the stories told in the comics."

From here on out you might consider some of this information to be SPOILERS, so if you don't want to know then don't read ahead! These are 7 of 14 reveals found on THR. Click the link to read the rest.

Big comics episode planned:
While the series is taking the above remix approach, EP Greg Nicotero previewed that an episode coming up later in the year is "almost verbatim" with one issue of the comic. "It's really fascinating to make those slight departures, introduce new characters and then get to a situation where you take one episode and you really stick to the source material. You'll be surprised about the way the characters lay out."

Rick will focus on fatherhood first:

Producers say the season three finale, where Carl (Chandler Riggs) questioned his father's decision to let the Woodbury survivors into the prison, serves as the jumping-off point for the season. "He's a man that is wrestling with a motor that didn't work last season," Lincoln says. "He's trying to suppress the brutality for the sake of both of his children and trying to be a parent in an apocalypse and trying to return to the man he once was." As part of that push, Rick has realized that the pressure of being the group's leader has taken him away from being a father. "He focuses his energies on something that's completely different but is still helping the people of the community," he added, keeping mum on what his new focus is. Adds EP Dave Alpert: "He's trying to find a way to add value and help and try to find a place for himself inside the community where he can do that without having to be the alpha male making all the decisions.… This is a very different Rick. How long that can last, however, is another question."

Could Rick lose a limb? (Spoiler alert!):

While Rick and the Governor (David Morrissey) are yet to have their epic face-off -- the first of which in the comics [SPOILER ALERT] ends with the former's hand being brutally chopped off -- Alpert says that may still be in the cards. "It was one of those things where, given all the other things going on [in season three], we decided it was too much to put on. That's not to say we're not going to do it later, but there's too much of a burden." Adds Lincoln with a smirk: "I keep saying we should do it, so maybe that's going to happen!"
The Governor will be different:
The eye-patched villain will have gone through "some very heavy stuff," Gimple says. "It will weigh upon him and it will change him." Adds Morrissey: "He doesn't carry what happened at the end of season three very lightly. He was a man that recognizes a switch went off in his head and even though he's done terrible things, that ramped him up to somewhere else and he was out of control. That's a very worrying thing for him and that switch takes him into this dark place." While some time has passed between seasons, Morrissey said fans will have to "wait and see" if the Governor's look has changed to be more in line with his comic book counterpart. "It's about how he deals and comes to terms with the man he is and what he's capable of and which side he's going to fall on," the actor said. "That's the choice he has to make."

The new threat:

"It's someone we haven't seen before. Someone unusual; you can't stab them in the face, you can't reason with it. It's a force that would be dangerous in this world and in the world of The Walking Dead, it's terrifying," Gimple said.
The zombies will be more threatening:
Nicotero says season four will feature walkers that aren't as manageable as they became in season three. "Our group became very proficient at killing walkers, so one of the things that Scott and I talked about after season three was we wanted that threat to be ever constant and ever present," he said of the group's ability to swiftly eliminate a horde of the undead. "We've devised ways to put our characters in instantaneous jeopardy without them being prepared for it. Danger could come from anywhere, and it was really important that we re-establish the rules of our world."

Andrea's death will continue to have an impact:

Producers insist they don't kill off characters for shock -- and ratings. Hurd says Andrea's (Laurie Holden) early death -- the character is still alive and kicking after more than 100 issues of the comic-- was an example of the organic evolution of characters on the series and prompted Rick to bring the Woodbury survivors back to the prison, setting the stage for season four. "It's never just, 'Oh, let's shock the fans. Let's just throw something in to titillate people for shock value,' " she says. Nicotero echoed the approach and said Gimple's pitches are always grounded in what's best for the story. "I miss Laurie Holden and I wish she was still around. I feel like there was a lot we could have done with her character. I feel like the end of season three, her character got a little lost and I wanted to see her around more and see her rejoin our group. It was a really sad departure for all of us and Scott is very thoughtful about those moments."

One thing we can count on is that we're in for another hell of a great season!
