Joss Whedon Has a Problem with EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

$

Ok, I love Empire Strikes Back! It's my favorite film in the Star Wars saga. I also love Joss Whedon, because he's a freakin' talented writer and director. So the fact that Whedon has a problem with Empire is kind of mind-blowing for me! I'm not sure how to take it. Whedon's big problems with the film is its ending, and he explains why that is in a interview with Entertainment Weekly

Empire committed the cardinal sin of not actually ending. Which at the time I was appalled by and I still think it was a terrible idea.”

When pressed further he said,

“Well, it’s not an ending. It’s a Come Back Next Week, or in three years. And that upsets me. I go to movies expecting to have a whole experience. If I want a movie that doesn’t end I’ll go to a French movie. That’s a betrayal of trust to me. A movie has to be complete within itself, it can’t just build off the first one or play variations.”

I thought the ending for Empire was great! I never had an issue with it, and I never thought I would disagree with Whedon on something. He makes a valid point, and I can see why he feels that way, but I don't agree with it. I liked how Empire ended. I am curious, however, to find out how Whedon would have ended the film.

What do you think about Whedon's opinion on the ending of Empire

THE WORLD'S END - Movie Review

$
0
0

So The World's End is the end of the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, the Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost team up that also brought us Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. And like how Shaun of the Dead mashed up rom-coms and zombie movies, and Hot Fuzz mixed buddy cop action movies with secret society conspiracy flicks, The World's End takes the old-friends-reunite-for-one-magic-night trope and slams an alien robot invasion right in its gut.

The movie opens with a flashback, narrated by Pegg, of Gary King's last day of school, when he led his tight group of friends on the Golden Mile, a visit to each of the ten pubs in his small town. They failed to reach all ten, but it was still one of those perfect, golden nights of youth, and the best night of his life. Then we see Pegg today, telling the story in a group therapy session. A fellow patient asks why he never finished, and suddenly he is a man with a mission.

Pegg visits his old gang, played by Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, and Frost, convincing them to return to their hometown to reenact the pub-crawl, this time making it all the way to the World's End. These visits let us know that Pegg hasn't done much since he left school, unless you count a lot of drugs. He tells each that all the others have already joined. The first three are shocked that Andy (Frost) has agreed to go drinking with Pegg, but say that if he's in, they're in. Frost does prove to be the hardest sell, and there is clearly a backstory that explains his refusal to have anything to do with his old friend, but he appears to soften when Pegg reveals that his mum has died recently.

Things begin badly. Pegg is late to pick them up, and it quickly becomes clear that although Pegg is resolutely stuck in time, the town has changed just enough that their reunion is depressing rather than fun. Plus, the group has a boatload of unresolved issues, mostly about what an absolute asshole Pegg is. Just when they start to get into it, they realize that just about everyone in town has been replaced by robots, and they're going to have to fight their way out. Like they say, you can't go home again.

The characters are well-drawn and well-grounded. You probably know people like this, and every reveal from their past makes perfect sense. Gary King is not a very likable character, but he is very funny in a thank-god-I-don't-have-to-deal-with-him-in-real-life kind of way. In the hands of a heavier or less charismatic actor he would be insufferable, but Pegg has a light enough touch to garner some sympathy. Frost helps out as the hard-ass, no-fun, won't-get-fooled-again Andy, whose justified disdain for Gary allows the audience to let him off the hook just a little. The rest of the group hits all the right notes as characters who were hurt by him, but not really scarred. There are a couple of really great cameos that I won't spoil, but Wright's casting of these two small but important roles is so on the mark it is just a joy to watch the main characters react to them.

Wright's direction is impressive. He and cinematographer Bill Pope found an interesting way of shooting the pouring of each pint, which is impressive given how many pints the characters drink. The visual style of the film work really well, too, blending a quaint village with, well, ink-blooded alien robots.

The script is really tight, and expertly interweaves the characters' relationship threads with the alien robot fighting, but it is a little too clever for its own good at some points. (Everything that happens is laid out if you pay attention to the beginning of the film and the names of the pubs.) I did enjoy seeing how the robot fighting dove-tailed with each character's journey. The victory at the final showdown did seem a little easily won, but the coda sort of puts the lie to that.

On top of everything else, it is funny. The crowd I watched it with was pretty highly motivated to see it, which might have helped, but it was pretty much solid laughter all the way through. You'll have to decide on your own where it ranks against the previous films in the trilogy, but it definitely holds its own. So see it this weekend, and then grab a pint with your friends and argue over which one is best. Hopefully your trip to the pub ends a little better than King's does.

It's Official: Ben Affleck is Batman

Ben Affleck is not an actor I would have considered and was not suggested by any readers as a possible candidate to play Batman. I'm unsure how I feel about his casting. Previous to his comeback as a skillful director I never thought of him as an actor with a lot of range. He's the right age and can bulk up to fill the role physically.  The big question is, can he bring the gravity, weight, and general badassness that is Bruce Wayne/Batman? Affleck has earned my trust as a filmmaker, hell he even has a couple of Oscars. But do you have faith in Affleck's ability as an actor?

Here is the official announcement - via The Wrap:

Last month’s surprise announcement of the new movie featuring both Superman and Batman created a wave of excitement and immediately fueled discussion and debate—among fans as well as in the media—about who would put on the cape and cowl of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego.
Snyder successfully re-imagined the origin of Clark Kent/Superman in the worldwide blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has earned more than $650 million worldwide to date, and climbing.  The director will now create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.
In the announcement, Greg Silverman stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some.  His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman.  He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne.  I can’t wait to work with him.”
Sue Kroll added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman.  He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”
Affleck recently starred in the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which he also directed and produced, earning acclaim and a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance in the film, as well as a number of directing honors.  In 2010, he starred in and directed the hit crime thriller “The Town.”
His recent acting work also includes “The Company Men,” “State of Play,” and “Hollywoodland,” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.  Earlier in his career, Affleck starred in and co-wrote (with Matt Damon) “Good Will Hunting,” for which he won an Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay.
The new Super Hero film is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder.  Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan and Wesley Coller serving as executive producers.
Production is expected to begin in 2014.
The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

Another Trailer for Coen Brothers' INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

A fantastic new trailer has been released for the Coen Brothers' great-looking folk music drama Inside Llewyn Davis. This new trailer shows off a little more of that subtle Coen Brothers humor that we all love. I've heard great things about this movie, and it looks absolutely beautiful.

The movie stars Oscar Isaac as Llewyn Davis, and the story "follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles—some of them of his own making."

The movie also stars  Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby) as Isaac's love interest, along with Justin Timberlake and John Goodman. The movie will be released on December 6th!

Karl Urban Joins Rainbow Family Adventure Film THE WONDER

This seems like an intriguingly different project for Karl Urban to involve himself with. It's a 3D family film called The Wonder, and it's a fantasy adventure that centers around magic rainbows. Apparently the actor is officially signed on with the film now, and it sounds like it's going to be a very crazy film... seriously! Just read over this breakdown of the story (thanks to Empire), and see for yourself!

The Wonder follows three teenagers, led by defiant outsider Rachel (Willow Shields), who after a bruising encounter with school bullies, experiences something incredible and seemingly impossible… a rainbow reaching up to the sky from a pool of golden energy.
With the help of friends Grace, a Chinese girl and Tane, a Maori boy, the teenage trio adopt high-tech methods to find another, and learning of ancient rainbow legends they each make a special wish. Finally they actually track down a rainbow and go on an incredible but terrifying ride. What the teenagers don’t realize is that on entering the rainbow, they’ve alerted the powerful covert meteorological agency Climate Anomalies Corporation and Dr Helen Armstrong and her agents are soon in pursuit.
As they crash-land in the midst of a Dragon Boat Festival in China, some teenage allies save the trio. Desperate to find a rainbow to take them home, their new friends and young scientist Ichee find the means, but their journey back to New Zealand is amidst violent skies across the Pacific and their mission becomes a global race against time to restore the whole balance of nature.

See, I told you! Urban will play an aid to the teens named Consul William Stanley on their adventure. The film is being directed by Peter Hewitt (Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) from a script by Ashley and Robert Sidaway.

Lee Daniels Confirmed to Direct Janis Joplin Biopic with Amy Adams

Lee Daniels has officially lined up his next film project, and it will be that Janis Joplin biopic he was in talks to direct last year. The film is called Get It While You Can, and it will star Amy Adams. Daniels talked about his plans in an interview with THR, saying,

“This is my next project for sure. I had no idea Janis Joplin was so smart — intellectual, even. Look, some of the smartest people in the world have been drug addicts.”

I think Adams is a solid choice for the role and when talking about her playing Joplin Daniels said,

“Guess what? She can sing her ass off!”

I'm sure she can! She did a great job in the live-action Disney fairytale Enchanted. She's also just a talented actress. As for Daniels, the guy is a great director. I recently saw The Butler, and I thought it was a fantastic film! If you're into historical dramas you'll definitely want to watch that one.

The screenplay for Get It While You Can was written by Ron Terry and his wife Theresa Kounin-Terr. The movie will follow the life of the hard-living singer and songwriter who created such classics as "Piece of My Heart" and "Me and Bobby McGee." She died of a heroin overdose in 1970, just a few weeks after Jimi Hendrix died of his drug overdose.

Joplin's story is sure to make for a great film.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD - 13 Cool New Photos!

Thor: The Dark World looks like it's going to be an amazingly entertaining film, and its sure to offer fans some pretty shocking moments. I don't know if you've watched all of the trailers yet or not, but there is some pretty surprising stuff that is going to go down in this movie. I'm excited to see how this story plays out, and where it leaves Thor in the end. It looks like this could be a dismal ending for Thor. Producer Craig Kyle talks about the film in an interview with Empire, explaining,

"Asgard at the beginning of the first film was at a time of peace. Now our guys have been fighting for over a year, constantly. It's a time of war.
When the Bifrost was broken at the end of the first film, Odin had to conjure a lot of dark energy and go through a lot of personal sacrifice to try and get his son back to Earth. And it was a one-shot deal. If Thor didn't succeed, without the Tesseract he couldn't have got back again. And in our film, finally the Bifrost has been rebuilt, but during that time, when the cops were largely cut off from the rest of the universe, you had miscreants that came in from outside the Nine Realms, pillaging and destroying and causing havoc. So that's what our guys have been doing now - trying to put all these fires out across the Nine Realms."

Here are 13 great new photos from the movie (thanks to Empire), which is set to hit theaters on November 8th!

Gladiator Mode Trailer for RYSE: SON OF ROME

Here is the official Gamescom trailer for Crytek's upcoming Xbox One title, Ryse: Son of Rome. This video showcases the game's co-operative multiplayer arena mode. You get together with your friends to murder the everliving tar out of hordes of barbarians and other gladiators. It's a beautiful-looking game, and the gladiatorial arena is surprisingly diverse. Wade through knee-deep water, fight in a forest, burn down barbarian camps, or fight in the traditional sandy arena.

Honestly, I think this game looks way over the top. It looks pretty (well, as pretty as stabbing guys through the heart can look), but I worry that it won't have substance. Hopefully it won't just be, "Killing barbarians is awesome--and with in-game microtransactions, you can make it even more awesome!"

Ryse: Son of Rome will be an Xbox One exclusive launch title.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Will Be Shot on 35MM, Not Digital

It was announced today that J.J. Abrams would be re-teaming with his Star Trek cinematographer Dan Mindel to shoot Star Wars: Episode VII. The kicker is it won't be shot digitally; it will be shot on 35mm film. Specifically, Kodak film stock 5219. I don't know if this is really a surprise for you or not, after all, Abrams has never shot a full film digitally. But he did use the RED Camera for pick-up shoots on Super 8. He's always used film in the movies that he's made. When discussing the subject at one point he said,

“I have not yet shot a movie digitally. Film is the thing I am most comfortable with. If film were to go away — and digital is challenging it— then the standard for the highest, best quality would go away.”

So there's brief bit of information for ya! Go Star Wars!

Cressida is a film director from the Capitol who joined the rebellion along with her camera crew. She is told to follow Katniss throughout her journeys in the rebellion so they can make propaganda videos to encourage strength and morale in the rebels.

Here's the description of the book that the third and fourth films will be based on:

The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12.

Some more photos have surfaced from the set of James Gunn's Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy! These give us our first look at Walking Dead star Michael Rooker in the role of the Yondu. There are also a few other alien characters with guns walking around a spacecraft wreckage.

Marvel President Kevin Feige also recently talked to Empire Magazine about the film, giving us a little more information on the story, when it's set in the Marvel universe and also revealing who the main villain will be. When asked if Guardians takes place at the same time as the other Phase Two films Feige said,

The general answer is yes. It’s not exactly revealed what year or month it is in relation to the other Phase Two films. But yes, it’s the same time.

He went on to discuss how connected it is with the rest of the universe, saying,

Certainly more than the others. We’ve already said that Thanos plays a part in it and is a character in it. That in and of itself should tell you it’s connected to the other worlds.

Since he brought up Thanos, Empire asked if he was the main villain in the movie, and this was his response,

Ronan The Accuser is very much the main bad guy. And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in Guardians, for sure. Certainly you’ll get more than the one turn around and smirk. You’ll get much more than that!

Ronan the Accuser is being played by Lee Pace in the film, and I'm sure he's going to be awesome! Everything Feige reveals here is basically in line with all of our assumptions.
